2 out of 5 stars Could've been so much more..........2007-04-26

Basically, this is rushes through the Mick Taylor years, collecting a bunch of big hits that are already available elsewhere in the first place - except for Dance Little Sister, which never was all that good in the first place. Now, out of the remaning nine, eight are amongst my favorite Stones songs: Brown Sugar, Wild Horses, Bitch (from the masterpiece Sticky Fingers), Tumbling Dice, Happy, Rip This Joint, Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker) and It's Only Rock and Roll. Not an Angie fan, but that's just me. But this is a fine example of wasted potential otherwise. Moonlight Mile, Can't You Hear Me Knocking, Rocks Off, Winter and Time Waits for None could all make claims at inclusion. But are they? No.
Now, these nothing-but-the-basics comps can work quite well when done right, which generally implies them covering a longer timespan than the four years Shade touches on. Take Hot Rocks - that one gets a decade of the basics perfectly. So does the recent Forty Licks, for that matter. However, this fails because there's too little.
The cover's, um... interesting. Could be a potshot at David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust days, or just the Stones being the Stones.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent compilation.......2006-11-04

This is a great compilation from what was arguably the best era for the band musically. The only thing that I think should have been done differently was to take out "Rip This Joint" and "Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo" and put in "All Down the Line" and "Star Star". But it's still a great compilation. Especially if you're, for one reason or another, unable to make your own compilations of songs.

4 out of 5 stars Shady Deal.......2006-08-11

Please bear with me as I may ramble a bit- I have been a Stones fan forever, and Made in the Shade is the best of the Stones "best ofs" this side of Hot Rocks. The song selection defines the Mick Taylor era and how they are arranged really gives this disk great punch (Angie right into Bitch is great). This album was a favorite for all of my rowdy years and I wore out my LP. I was very excited to see the remastered release and just picked it up. I must say, despite what some other reviewers said, I picked up a wicked hiss on a couple of songs- Pretty disappointing; otherwise the mix is bright and crisp. Heartbreaker is amazing.

Now for the rant. Previous reviewers have mentioned this in a softer tone. These remastered disks have no oomph or extra anything. The Stones have repackaged everything to death to wring one last dime out of their fans. I wish that when they undertook the last remastering that they at least gave us liner notes. The thought of a couple of live cuts or rarities from the time of each album is much too much to expect. Rhino Records work with re-release and remastering is the benchmark- great liner notes, disks stuffed with extras. Heck, even the notoriously money grubbing Who put a few extras on their countless re-releases.

I know we will never get this with the Stones and I knew what I was getting with Made in the Shade, and sadly I got nothing more. So... It is a great disk with a great line-up of songs from a great time in the bands career. Find it cheap, it's worth it!

5 out of 5 stars Made in the Shade.......2005-12-09

I haven't listened to a lot of The Rolling Stones, in fact this is the first full album I've listened to by the group. But, it's a compilation of their first four albums and it's very well done.

1. Brown Sugar-5/5-Interesting lyrics.
2. Tumbling Dice-4/5-This song is OK.
3. Happy-5/5-Great song, doesn't sound like Mick Jagger on vocals though.
4. Dance Little Sister-5/5-Pretty cool song. It's catchy.
5. Wild Horses-5/5-The lyrics are pretty good on this song. Vocals on the chorus are great as well.
6. Angie-5/5-Awesome song.
7. Bitch-4/5-(No Comment)
8. It's Only Rock 'n' Roll-5/5-One of my favorite Rolling Stones songs.
9. Ooo Ooo Ooo Ooo Ooo (Heartbreaker)-5/5-Great song.
10. Rip This Joint-5/5-I love the title of the song...The song lives up to its title.

4 out of 5 stars Start Me Up!.......2005-06-01

The cuts sound fine. Due to the super (as the Reardon review noted) remastering job by Bob Ludwig, there's more imaging and sharper overall sound. Worth the bucks! The "Memory Hotel." It never seems to close.

5 out of 5 stars One of my Wonder Years albums.......2006-05-29

I remember seeing this album all over the place growing up. I know I was only 7 when this was released, but bought it when I was 13 almost 14. I looked at the album cover just recently, and saw the adroginous cover, and I gasped. I'm like this is promoting homosexuality. I choose to remember it for the songs though, and they were good picks here, but I felt they could've added a few others here.

5 out of 5 stars This is just killer Stones material.......2006-02-24

This is the first Rolling Stones purchase I ever made, and it's the one that I always want to play more than the few others that I have. I have the mid 80's version that's not remastered, but I just ordered one of these new Made in the Shade remasters, so I think I'll be quite happy with it. I've heard that maybe about half or a little bit more of this release is hits, but like one of the reviewers of this cd said, this has just the right combination of songs, and I have to heartily agree with that assessment. I'm not a huge fan of the group, so all I really need is the FORTY LICKS Set, plus, MADE IN THE SHADE, and I'm good to go. Enjoy!!!

5 out of 5 stars Definitely worth the money.......2005-04-09

I just bought this album today, not aware until now that it had only been released on the 5th of April ("remastered," or so they say); I guess it's the first time it's been released on CD.

First of all, let's get something out of the way - it is not remastered. The Forty Licks album has much better remasters of Wild Horses, Brown Sugar, Happy, Angie, and It's Only Rock N' Roll (But I Like It). I wondered why they didn't just put the Forty Licks remasters on this album. In fact with Made in the Shade, you're paying $11.99 for five out of ten tracks that are included on the Forty Licks album, which you can buy for twice the price - which includes four times the amount of tracks as Made in the Shade. (Are you still with me, here?)

The GOOD thing is that this includes five other solid tracks that AREN'T included on Forty Licks: Tumbling Dice, Dance Little Sister, Bitch, Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker), and Rip This Joint.

Also, the Forty Licks album was not only remastered, but the original tracks were edited, something Rolling Stones purists might find appalling. The tracks here are left untouched - there is often static in the right speaker, I instantly noticed, preserving the original scratchy quality of the sound. (Before surround sound and stereo was perfected.) Good evidence that it was poorly remastered, and therefore not tampered with by over-zealous technicians. Whether you find this a good or a bad thing may depend entirely on how you favor the Rolling Stones.

One thing I was rather disappointed with was the packaging. Not the artwork, but the actual interior packaging. There is no pamphlet, no additional photos. In fact, the album doesn't really offer anything exclusive (as some tend to do - e.g. The Beatles Anthology). But they did manage to sneak in a special warning on the inside cover that tells you not to share the CD with friends or post any tracks on the Internet. It kinda shows where the producers' hearts lie.

In summary, Stones enthusiasts should definitely buy this, and it's worth the money, as it includes some of their best songs ever. It also preserves the tracks in their original nature, with only minor digital touchups ("remastering") that is so poor that, at first, I thought they had taken it straight from the vinyl without remastering it at all. But if you're just a casual listener, the Forty Licks album is more comprehensive - it features better audio quality and a much larger selection of Greatest Hits, whereas if you aren't a Stones freak you might be turned off by some of the tracks here.

5 out of 5 stars Wouldn't You Like to Meet the Blonde on the Cover?.......2005-04-09

Call me a sucker. Call me a fool. Hey you can even call me a marketing analyst's wet dream! For some reason I keep buying the endless remastered, CD compilations, that the Stones keep putting out of their old hits. The funny thing is, that I pretty rarely put these babies in the CD player. I'd much rather listen to classic titles like "Let it Bleed" or "Exile On Main Street". In fact, ironically, the most use I get out of these releases is to use them to burn my own compilations on CD-R. There are two exceptions to this scenario. One is the excellent double CD "Hot Rocks", which is primarily the Stone's chart topping, sixties greatest hits. I had it on vinyl as a kid and it's an excellent overview for any neophyte just getting their toes wet on Rolling Stones music. The other compilation, that I truely love is the 1975 release, "Made in the Shade". This compilation is mainly made up of both hits (and a few non-hits) from the early to mid '70s. For some reason this mix of songs, just seems to work so well together. They are equal parts, good old Stones Sassiness ("Dance Little Sister", "Heart Breaker", "B**ch") and sentimentality ("Wild Horses", "Angie", "Happy"). I have endless memories of past summers, where I would roll the windows of my car down, slip "Made in the Shade" into the old cassette player and let it blast at top volume. It might sound totally corny, but this compilation album just totally reeks with rock n' roll spirit. It's why I ever liked the stones in the first place! A couple of years ago the record companies finally started re-releasing the Stone's classic albums to CD in remastered form. Let's just say I was more than mildly disapointed, when "Made in the Shade" was not included among these re-releases. I even used many of the compilations to create my own remastered version of the album. Well finally to my delight, Virgin Records has put it out in remastered form. The other day I put it in the car CD player, rolled down the windows and it just sounded great! Every Mick vocal, every Keith guitar lick, every Charlie cymbals crash, just sounded so clear. I could even make out some of the more obscure lyrics! If your a fan of the Stones '70s work or just a plain old fan of good rock n' roll, than give this CD a try. I just can't stop playing it. Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Authentic But Not Stale.......2000-06-22

Though sometimes lacking as far as overall sound quality, this album still offers some amazing musicality. Jumping from traditional big band arrangements and Professor Longhair, to Tchaikovsky melodies, to a kind of polka/funk hybrid (on "Polkaspasm"), and a few stops along the way, "Made in the Shade" serves as a great tone setter for this band: great licks and great wit. Never to be lumped into an easy listening category, this band keeps your ears on your toes. For the jazz aficionado and the casual listener alike, this album will prove to a real pleasure.
