Fourteen years, a live CD/DVD, some solo albums, and one tragic suicide after Crowded House's last release comes this highly anticipated reunion. Singer/songwriter Neil Finn and bassist Nick Seymour reunited after the 2005 death of drummer Paul Hester, brought in a new member and two producers (Ethan Johns and Steve Lillywhite) to replace longtime cohort Mitchell Froom, and the impressive result is a logical and overdue addition to the band's previous four albums. Finn's knack for a melodic ballad remains firmly in place as Time on Earth coasts on his dreamy voice and introspective, hook-laden pop choruses. However, this is a more reflective collection that requires a few spins to fully reveal its charms. Finn co-writes "Even a Child" with Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, and that and the frisky "She Called Up" are the most buoyant tracks on this predominantly pensive disc. Finn has generally shaded towards a darker edge and this hour-long set might have benefited from more of the lighter touch he applies to "Transit Lounge," a song enhanced by Beth Rowley's lovely and startling wordless vocals along with jazzy electric piano and even airport sound effects. Strings, sitar, and intricate production add subtle elements that bolster the timeless musical qualities Finn has always reveled in. The ominous, even brooding "Silent House," a co-write with all three Dixie Chicks, is another highlight that sounds like nothing either has done before as it floats along on fuzz guitar and hurdy-gurdy, both courtesy of Johns. Trimming some weaker cuts would have made this a more focused listen, but Time on Earth is a worthy successor to Crowded House's existing catalog--a high compliment indeed. --Hal Horowitz

5 out of 5 stars I'm blown away..........2007-07-17

At the outset, I'll admit that I have never considered myself a huge Crowded House fan. Oh sure, I enjoyed Don't Dream It's Over and Something So Strong like the rest of the world in the '80's, but I never bought an CH album before this one.

On a whim, I picked this up last week. To be succinct, I'm completely blown away. I'm usually a prog-rock fan (ie Rush, Yes, etc.). Coming from this perspective, this new CH album reminds me of "prog-pop," in that the songwriting is smart, well-crafted, and pushing the boundaries of the genre. Additionally, Finn and the gang seem to have been around long enough to know, for example, how to utilize just one or two notes on the piano in order to subtly "make" the entire song.

This being said, this album has something that most prog doesn't contain: absolutely beautiful, personal, and touching lyrics. Although often melancholy, the songs never degenerate into a mere joyless apprehension of life. Rather, the lyrics are deeply bittersweet; consequently, they come across as refreshingly unaffected and ultimately, quite heartfelt. They, along with Finn's delivery, make this a very special album.

In short, I am deeply impressed by this record and I am now looking forward to discovering CH's back catalog.

5 out of 5 stars Run, Don't Walk, to Grab This One.......2007-07-15

It's hard to articulate how good this disc is. If you're a fan of melodic and smart pop/rock, you will love this album. Neil Finn is at the very top of his game, and the songs are more stick-to-your-ribs hooky than the last few of his efforts. I bought this three days ago and have sat and listened to it front-to-end six times since. That's extremely rare these days!

4 out of 5 stars More of the Excellence You've Come To Expect.......2007-07-13

When I heard in 2006 that Neil Finn's planned next solo album was going to be a Crowed House album, I was a little disappointed. Owning CH albums, Split Enz albums, and the two Finn Brothers albums, I ultimately find Neil Finn's solo material (_Try Whistling This_ & _One Nil_) to be his best work. However, since this is Neil Finn we're talking about--easily one of pop music's best songwriters--regardless of what name was going to be on the album, it would likely be up to par with his previous work. However, stacked up against such phenomenal post-CH work, _Time on Earth_ does ultimately dissapoint a little bit.

Lyrically, the suicide of original drummer Paul Hester looms over nearly the entire album. From the beautiful opener "Nobody Wants To" to the Split Enz-like "She Called Up" to the plaintive "Silent House," Neil Finn is clearly mourning within this material. The first half of the album is just as good as anything Crowded House has done, with "Pour Le Monde" being another stunning, melancholy work of songwriting genius that fans have come to expect from Finn ("he imagines the world/as the angel ascending/like the ghost of a man/who is tied up to the chair/and he tries to believe/that his life has a meaning/with his hand on his heart"). About midway through the album, the momentum slows down a bit. "Heaven That I'm Making," co-written with Johnny Marr sounds like something that might've made it onto _One Nil_, but fails to make much of an impression, and is followed by the pretty, but again, slightly lackluster "A Sigh." Along with "Silent House," "A Sigh" sounds like something more from the "Rain" movie score that Finn was involved with a few years ago than a CH or Finn album--very subtle, low-key, lo-fi offerings. "English Trees" continues the pretty, plaintive, reflective mood that dominates the middle of the album before jumping back into the upbeat, mysterious "She Walked Her Way Down" ("and i know what the answer is/but i'm happy to be here tonight/and when you're in the moment/everything you want is right"). "Transit Lounge" sounds like the experimental side of Neil Finn' solo work and is one of the best, freshest sounding songs on the album. Closing out the album are two more low-key and subtle songs--"You Are The One To Make Me Cry" and "People Are Like Suns." Closers on albums that Finn is involved with--"Together Alone," "Addicted," "Into The Sunset," "Gentle Hum"--are usually breathtakingly beautiful. "People Are Like Suns" does not match the heights achieved by those songs, but it comes close, ending the album with the "appreciate every moment" theme that is displayed on this CH album in the wake of Paul Hester's death: "better take all the love that you got in a single hand...." People are like suns..."they come and they go...."

_Time On Earth_ is another great album to add to your Crowded House collection. It's a far more subtle offering than _Woodface_ or _Together Alone_, but it rewards the listener more and more with repeated listenings. Fans of Finn's prior work will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars superb album!.......2007-07-12

I am in complete agreement with Vinzo: this is a masterpiece. Finn is only getting better, each song is perfectly constructed and a joy to listen to. i've listened through it 3 times in 24 hours and can't wait to hear it again. been a long time since any recording felt like "somethin so right" to me, so to speak. i like a lot of new records, and love some, but getting through them in their entirety more than once the first day - i can't remember the last time that happened.

the band sound great and the production is cleaner, less thick, than the very fine finn brothers album. sure sounds like a crowded house album to me!

where I disagree with other reviewers is in how accessable this is. i found it immediately so - I was on it from the 1st measure and found every song very straight ahead and perfectly neil finn/crowded house-ish. a few choice surprise sonic nuggets here and there, but hard to get used to? no way.

I agree Vinzo, it really is THAT good. a perfect ten!!!

5 out of 5 stars Haunting and Brilliant.......2007-07-10

Time on Earth is a masterpiece. Not as immediately accessible as the earlier Crowded House ablums, this one has so many very special moments. There is so much "home" to the new Crowded House. I continue to be amazed at what a great songwriter Neil Finn is. He allows his beautiful voice to show the pain he has suffered with the loss of Paul Hester. Listen to the gorgeous "Pour Le Monde" and "People are Like Suns", they are stunning and haunting lyrically, musically and vocally. Also, the background vocals throughout this album are remarkable and beautifully realized.

This is one of those albums which will be recognized as a classic many years from now. It is the Abbey Road for Crowded House (the Beatle reference is intentional). Great songs, gorgeous vocals, beautiful production, great band. Time on Earth is the album of the year and may be Neil Finn's masterpiece. Yes, it is that good.

For parents, listening to Dan Zanes provides not only instant Raffi relief, but also the warm sense of belonging to the right crowd. On each disc he trots out a posse of cool friends like Sheryl Crow, Suzanne Vega, and Lou Reed and he delivers his openhearted lyrics with the rare roots-rocker's gift for stirring grace into grit. It would seem that the release of his fourth record, House Party would be ripe for a backlash--how long can the hokey conceit of a bunch of aging groovsters banging out kids' tunes in a Brooklyn basement hang onto its charm? Looks like we'll have to wait and see, because House Party rages on with the same winning, welcome-to-our-homespun-revolution vibe as its predecessors. Deborah Harry takes a twirl on "Waltzing Matilda," Bob Weir fires up the "Wabash Cannonball," and Angelique Kidjo bids "Jamaica Farewell," but the Zanes originals are this record's proving grounds, and they pin the tail on the donkey with bulls-eye precision. Contributions from returning regulars Barbara Brousal and Rankin' Don--the best couple of favors a party could hope for--send Zanes' campaign to become the guy who turned lampshade-wearing into a kindergarten fashion craze soaring. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Dan's first album...Wiggle the Wiggles out of your CD Player.......2007-06-12

You may have seen Dan on various spots on Sesame Street, I first saw him in his yellow suit, singing Jump Up. This album continues the wonderful music that my daughter has turned my wife and my self on to. The beats are there, and the lyrics are very catchy.

So do yourself a favor, swap out Wiggles or Barney for Dan and his Friends, and enjoy kids music once again.

5 out of 5 stars Thank goodness for Dan Zanes!!!!!!.......2007-05-21

Mr. Zanes, you could not have come along at a better time! In a market where Teletubbies, Barney and the Wiggles seem to have the corner, this parent-friendly album is a welcome relief from all the fruit salad/I love you, you love me/lemondrops and gumdrops drivel that permeate my mushy stay-at-home mom brain!

When I was a single college gal, I remember listening to very hip, fun music. Then came pregnancy and babies. Then Baby Einstein music (which is good, but sounds like someone's ballerina jewelry box after awhile), Barney, Sesame Street and nursery rhyme CDs that took over my music collection. Ack!!! What happened to me? I decided it was time to search for something new for me and the kids to listen to.

After finding this CD and loving it, I just assumed that my one-year-old and four-year-old would not like DZ because it sounded too different from what they were used to. Boy, was I wrong! My older one thinks she is listening to "cool music" -- which she is! We especially like the "Wabash Cannonball" but every song on here is a hit with my kids. The guy is truly talented, and it's just great stuff. And it's fun to hear the celeb singers on a kid's album. Finally, we all have "cool music" to listen to!

5 out of 5 stars My daughters favorite!.......2007-05-14

I bought this CD since Dan Zane is on the Disney Channel. My daughter absolutely loves it! She asks to hear "House Party" all day every day. We dance and sing and it has brought a lot of fun into our house.

5 out of 5 stars Dan is her new best friend.......2007-05-13

We always look for music that is entertaining and enriching for both the toddler and the parent. We had heard Dan sing before on "For the Kids" CD and thought we'd give it a try. We all get down to Dan Zanes House Party! This CD never leaves the car player. The cover is a delightfully drawn board book of Dan & his entorage Whoopin' it up all over town. My 2 year old will "read" the book to me, explaining the pictures and making connections to the music. It's great.

4 out of 5 stars Kids love it.......2007-03-09

My son, aged 6 and my daughter, almost 2 - love to dance to "House Party Time" in the morning. It really gets them going. They are big Dan Zanes fans.

5 out of 5 stars the most relaxing classical music in the university.......2007-05-12

All my favorites. I can start the CD player, which is wired to speakers in every room of my house, and just let it play, along with "The Most Relaxing Classical Music in the World" and "The Most Relaxing Classical Guitar in the World." I enjoy an awareness of familiar and beautiful strains of my favorites all day long and never get tired of it.

My brother visited me recently and noticed it right away. That will be another order for this fabulour music.

5 out of 5 stars Relaxing Classical Music.......2007-01-08

I was not really a classical music fan but I am now. I purchased this cd for my 14 year old grand-daughter, not knowing we would both enjoy the music so much. She has always enjoyed classical music along with all of the other teen music, rap, rock, country, etc.
Also, it really helped being able to listen to parts of the music before purchasing.

2 out of 5 stars Stress-freedom.......2006-03-14

Perfect music to end the work day. After listening to this I can face the evening. If the morning is hard, a little at lunch time gets me through the afternoon.

5 out of 5 stars Greatly enjoy!.......2006-02-23

I first developed a taste for this music a number of years ago when my daughter started playing in the orchestra. The reason I made this purchase however, was because I have a great deal of difficulty with anxiety and I was looking for ways to find help. I love these CDs. It helps so much to sit and close my eyes and enjoy the music. The CDs are full of beautiful music.

Time on Earth, the first Crowded House record since 1993's superlative Together Alone, began as a Neil Finn solo record, but morphed into a reunion album after bassist Nick Seymour joined the studio sessions and new drummer (Matt Sherrod, formerly of Beck) was recruited to replace the late Paul Hester. Hester sadly took his own life in 2005, and Time on Earth is, in that sense, a tribute album; yet it's simultaneously a move into the future. In true CH style, Time on Earth weaves together a range of moods, from touching, introspective ballads, to upbeat, Beatles-esque rock 'n' roll. --Paul Sullivan

4 out of 5 stars Welcome Back Crowdies.......2007-07-10

This new Crowded House effort is simply wonderful. But, if you're after instant gratification, then this album is not for you. It is impossible to comment on this CD before at least half a dozen listens. It is darker and heavier than previous Crowded House sets and Paul Hester's presence is everywhere. While it may not have the same level of energy as you'd expect from typical Crowded House fare, it nevertheless has moments of pure Neil Finn genius. She Called Up is the closest thing to the boppy Crowded House of yesterday, reminiscent of Something So Strong. In part, Time On Earth does resemble one of Neil Finn's solo projects, but this is only logical because this CD began as Finn's next solo work until the suggestion of reforming Crowded House was raised. There are aspects of every part of Finn's career on this CD, with hints of Split Enz, reminders of the Crowded House we used to love (and now love again) and both his own work and that with brother Tim, as well. On first listen, you'll probably only like two or three tracks, but after half a dozen listens you won't be able to put it down. There's something to enjoy about nearly every track on this CD. The uptempo pop of the Crowded House of the 80s and 90s still exists on Time on Earth, the gorgeous ballads are haunting, the brooding rock of Silent House (co-written with The Dixie Chicks) fantastic, and the melodies, just beautiful. To all those doubters out there, you didn't really think one of the greatest songwriters of our generation would let us down, did you?

1 out of 5 stars The Most Relaxing Classical Album In the World Eveer, Volume II.......2006-08-28

Good selection of music, poorly performed and badly arranged. Good album for a tag sale. Same comment applies for Volume I.

5 out of 5 stars Great music listein to while you read in bed.......2005-08-21

I have listened to this CD for the last several years before going to sleep at night. I love classical music, and this is great music to help make my soul feel at peace and unwind after a taxing day.

5 out of 5 stars A must buy for the non-snobbish classical music fan........2004-10-22

I bought Vol. 1 of this series and was quite satisfied, but I have to say I'm more than satisfied with this one. If you can just mellow out and enjoy some great pieces, you'll love this CD. #15 on Disc 2 is almost worth the price alone!

5 out of 5 stars A bliss of spirit........2004-09-18

That's disc will open You a wonderful, beautiful world of sounds, their harmony & emotion : you'll feel your heart full of
Joy, Tears, Love.
Good LUCK!

2 out of 5 stars Boring.......2004-05-11

Yes this CD will put you to sleep in minutes. Its the most boring uninspiring classical music. The first CD was very good but this Vol. 2 is like most movie sequels....AWFUL !

Dan Zanes, lead singer of the 1980s roots-rock band the Del Fuegos, didn't need to enlist the high-profile help of pals Sheryl Crow and Suzanne Vega to produce a crowd-pleasing kids' record, but he got it anyway. On Rocket Ship Beach, where traditional tunes such as "Polly Wolly Doodle" (with Crow) and "Erie Canal" (with Vega) mingle in loosey-goosey, just-for-the-fun-of-it fashion with originals such as the plucky "All My Friends Live in the Woods" (written by Bad Company buddy Simon Kirke), Zanes exhibits the same plugged-in exuberance that gave his former band its unpredictable zing. Besides the no-amateurs instrumentation, which includes Zanes on guitar, lap steel, banjo-mandolin, and studiophone, and G.E. Smith on banjo-mandolin and guitar as part of a kickin' string band that performs the classic "King Kong Kitchie," plus a cluster of others, what stands out most about this 17-track funfest is its draw-you-in friendliness. Pitching in with the pros (who also include dancehall rapper Rankin' Don--he delivers the gruff stuff on "Father Goose" and "Sunny Side of the Street") are family friends such as the gang of West Indian babysitters turned vocal group the Sandy Girls, who give it up to impressive, get-you-boogying effect on "Emmanuel Road," and a kindergarten class that contributes, adorably, to "Sidewalks of New York." All told, this is way hipper than most kids' records and it also razzle-dazzles with its packaging--Rocket Ship Beach arrives in a chunky, colorful board-book illustrated with sweet, fantasy-fueled beachside scenes by banjo player and Zanes's brother-in-law, Donald Saaf. --Tammy La Gorce

Album Description

music is in the air. it's alive and it's here for everyone. if you can play an old song, you can write a new song. make it a family parade, all around the kitchen cock-a-doodle-doodle-doo. or how about a family band? on the front steps, in the back yard, in the park, on the sidewalk, in the basement. if you can brush your teeth, you can play tamborine. if you can tell a joke, you can sing.

festival five records is the sound of a neighborhood band on the front stoop playing tunes after dinner for a family dance. festival five records is the sound of a group of 9 and 10 year olds singing a sixty year old broadway song in the basement of a 150 year old row house. it's the sound of a 40-year-old dad on a blue porch singing a 400 year old story song about a frog that marries a mouse. when you feel that music in the air, try to catch as much as possible.

5 out of 5 stars It's great!.......2007-01-27

I'm a first-time Mom who was looking for a CD both my daughter and I could enjoy. We rec'd this CD at Christmas along with "Buzz Buzz" by Laurie Berkner. This one is my personal favorite. I think I enjoy it as much, if not more than my daughter (who is 1). The songs are addicting and I, like a previous reviewer, find myself singing/humming them even when my daughter is not around. Polly Wolly Doodle and King Kong Kitchie are fabulous! I highly recommend giving this CD a spin. I'm sure my daughter will love it even more when she gets a little older.

1 out of 5 stars Honestly, this CD sucks.......2007-01-18

I was excited to receive this CD because of its great reviews. Once I received it however, I found it barely listenable. My toddler daughter looked and me and said "Off!Off!" and we took it off the CD player after only 10 minutes.

People can make of Raffi all they want, but at least his music is tolerable!

Don't waste your money on this lemon of a CD.

5 out of 5 stars What an awesome CD!!!.......2006-12-20

My 2 year old and 1 year old think this CD ROCKS! My son will point to the CD player and cry and whine until I turn it on. From song one they both wiggle, giggle and dance all over. The songs are very folksy, upbeat, and easy to groove too. Get this CD and watch your kids get jiggy wit' it!

5 out of 5 stars rocket ship beach review.......2006-11-10

Rocket Ship Beach was my introduction to Dan Zanes. I have a new son and I was searching for some music we could both enjoy. I found this and thought I would give it a shot. The cd is wonderful. The music is addicting and I find myself driving down the road singing to myself....without my son in the car! Polly Wolly Doodle, the first track, is one of my favorites (and not because I am a Sheryl Crow fan). Another beautiful song is "Hello". This cd is upbeat, fun and yet different from some more typical childrens music. My son really enjoys the different sounds and rhythms on the cd. The cd has a few little introductions where you can hear children, a phone ringing, ect. This cd is sure to put you in a good mood. I highly recommend it! I am actually waiting for another Dan Zanes cd to arrive I liked it so much.

5 out of 5 stars we all love it.......2006-08-05

The whole family can enjoy this music, unlike many of the other kid's music that is so lame.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars At The Movies by Andre Rieu.......2007-05-20

Andre Rieu brings a warmth and pop-like aire to his music. Here he plays popular music with a classical orchestra and adds his special ingredients to it ie:humor (musical jokes for the serious listener),fun,light-heartedness.It's a band of very talented musicians having alot of fun as is evident in the playing and especially if you've seen them in concert.I can "hear" the smiles on their not serious faces by their style of playing...less staccato and with more feeling.Andre and company swing and dance through every track climaxing on Ravel's Bolero from the movie "10".

4 out of 5 stars very beautiful.......2007-01-09

This cd is very beautiful. It captures the songs wonderfully. The orchestra does a fine job.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing Music.......2006-11-03

Andre Rieu presents wonderful songs in a very inspirational way. They are to be enjoyed as "dinner music" or just for times when the TV is off and you need some "quiet time". It is a great grouping of melodies.

5 out of 5 stars from texas--AND FROM A MUSIC LOVER.......2006-08-30

ANDRE RIEU TAKES US ON A WONDERFUL TRIP BACK IN TIME TO THE MOVIES YOU CAN=T FORGET AND THE MUSIC THAT MADE THEM CLASSICS. DO BUY IT. IT IS A TREASURE...

4 out of 5 stars Andre Rieu - Music for the masses.......2006-08-10

Sometimes you just want enjoyable music as a backdrop to the job at hand. I turn to Andre to get me through these events. Probably not a glowing endorsement, but if you know of Mr. Rieu's feelings about music, he would just smile and nod his head. This is music to just enjoy for the sake of music - and that is a good thing.

4 out of 5 stars Please, Mr. Barry, I Want Some More!.......2007-02-22

There is no doubt that the soundtrack of Somewhere in Time contains some of the most beautiful music on Earth - thanks in great part to Rachmaninoff. I was so excited to see this re-recording with its promise of more music. I was less excited when I listened to it, simply because I wanted - and expected - more. While some of the gaps have been filled in from the original recording, the new pieces - some a mere 1:30 in length - left me wanting still more. That said, however, I would still opt for this recording over the original simply because you do get to hear more of Mr. Barry's - and Rachmaninoff's - exquisite music.

5 out of 5 stars A Big Fan.......2006-11-07

I have enjoyed the music from this movie since it came out. After not hearing the CD for years I came across it again and have been so pleased with the music. The selections are great. If you are a fan of the movie or Rachmaninoff - this is sure to please!

5 out of 5 stars AN UPDATED JOURNEY TO THE PAST........2006-11-03

John Barry contributed magnificently to the atmosphere and artistic quality of SOMEWHERE IN TIME, the film based on a Richard Matheson novel about a man travelling to the past to meet again with the love of his life/lives. Haunting music, sometimes romantic others misterious, are basic to this tragic tale starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. This re-recording captures every musical moment of the original partiture on digital sound. A must for the film fans, which are legion!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music, Blooper In Text On Jewel Case.......2006-09-05

I bought a 20th anniversary DVD copy of this movie last weekend, and just bought this CD today. It plays the soundtrack as beautiful as it was played in the film. One litte blooper on the box list of tracks. Track 7 is called "Room 417". In the film, Richard (played by the late Christopher Reeve) stays in Room 416 at the Grand Hotel. Except for that, this is a music set for a beautiful dream. I only wonder if I fall asleep listening to it, will I wake up 1912? Time will tell I guess. ;-)

5 out of 5 stars Somewhere in Time.......2006-08-04

Hauntingly beautiful music. If you loved the movie, the CD brings it all back without the picture. So, you can listen at work, or in the car, and visually transport yourself back in time.

5 out of 5 stars A Promising Debut.......2007-04-03

Finally found this one (actually had to special-order it) and I am really impressed. It took me quite awhile to get into these guys but I am certainly glad I did. While some slag this album as amateurish (and they may be right but I don't care), I found this to be a great, albeit basic, hard rock stomper. I really enjoy this album from beginning to end as I do with it's immediate follow-ups. I am very impressed by the heaviness and the blues-influences that are very evident. Great debut by an under-rated band. Plus, they're from Michigan just as I am. If you are looking to purchase this album, buy the 2002 remaster which contains remastered sound and great liners.

1 out of 5 stars A popular but inept imitation of Cream.......2007-03-30

I have the original vinyl recording. Basically, this band rode the hype created by power trios such as Cream and Hendrix. As opposed to those two bands, this band plods along from the opening set to the dull, boring, leaden last cut with its clunky exchange between Mark Farner and Mel Schacher, to the lifeless backbeat by Brewer. Mark Farner's playing is easily imitable by dozens oflocal garage bands, he seems to revel in cutting virtually every solo from the E-minor chord. Best player is Don Brewer, the drummer, but his pyrotechnic drumming is no complement to the soulless noise one suffers through on this record.

If you must get this reissue CD, be forewarned- unless you really like these obnoxious louts.

5 out of 5 stars Another classic for my collection.......2007-02-06

Grand Funk was everything about Rock n' Roll. Fantastic find at a great price.

4 out of 5 stars A good and solid first effort.......2004-10-26

GFR's first release goes to show you that sometimes music critics don't know jack about music! This is a good debut filled with power and passion that many other rock bands could only dream of doing after even ten albums! Anyway rock was never supposed to be pretty and clean but raw and dirty and GFR delivers with On Time. So go back to a time when rock was revolutionary and artist still had passion for their music and get this CD before your rock n' roll tastes are contaminated from the crap that is coming out today. Play it loud baby!

5 out of 5 stars The most unfairly criticised album in rock history!.......2004-08-08

Let's be honest--is it ever fair to pan anyone's first album? Believe me, I've heard much worse debut albums than this one. Most bands are just trying to find their "sound" on their first album. I believe GFR discovered their sound from their very first rehearsals.
If there is anything to be criticised here, its only on the production side of things. When Rolling Stone magazine gave their first official scathing review of GFR's music, probably the only thing they got right was, "the drumming guaranteed to send you up the wall!" But that's only because on a lot of the songs here, the loudest thing you CAN hear is Don Brewer's drums. I read where Mark Farner complained that his guitar didn't come out loud enough on this album--which, when he switched on the fuzztone, as he did on "Anybody's Answer", "Can't Be Too Long" and toward the end of "Heartbreaker", could have easily rivaled that of Tony Iommi and Leslie West in terms of loudness, had only production levels been more in the "red". And Mel Schacher, the loudest bass player in the world--where was he? His bass can barely be heard on this album, as if it had hardly been plugged in at all! At any rate, manager/producer Terry Knight and engineer Ken Hamann turned things around sharply for the better on the next album, putting the guitar and bass out front, and the drums in it's rightful, lowly place in the back of the mix, and then putting all the levels in the "red"--hence, the "red" album.
But forget about production for a minute--how about the music. Let's take this one at a time. Rolling Stone called this album, "one-dimensional". Hardly! I've heard one-dimensional albums, and this is certainly not one. However, that's not to say that all "one-dimensional" albums are bad--Boston's debut is "one-dimensional". Being "one-dimesnional", or saying all the songs sound the same, just means you have your own "sound". GFR had its own sound, but injected it's sound into different kinds of music, such as the jazzy-"T.N.U.C.", the bluesy-"Time Machine", and the proto-power ballad, "Heartbreaker". GFR, much like Led Zeppelin, was very good at musical arrangements, timing, and tempo changes for such a young group, and knowing when to go from light-to heavy-and back to light, such as on "Anybody's Answer" and "Can't Be Too Long"--much as Led Zeppelin on a song like "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You".
"Unmusical" is another word for this album that Rolling Stone Mag used to describe. "Unmusical" is what a lot of the music is today, like Pantera and Metallica. Describing this album as "unmusical" is not even listening to this album, and denying everything I just said about it. If this was considered "heavy metal" for its time, its a whole lot more melodic, muscial, and listenable than what is called "heavy metal" today. It's only when Mark Farner slices through "Anybody's Answer", "Can't Be Too Long", and "Heartbreaker" with his chainsaw-sounding fuzz guitar that the band even reaches what I consider, "metallic proportions".
On the vocal harmony end of things, this is probably their best album in terms of overdubbing Mark and Don's voices to sound almost ethereal and frightening! If you like Vanilla Fudge or Uriah Heep for the vocal harmonies, you might like some of what you hear on this album. Overdubbing Mark's lead and rhythm guitars also comes out sounding great, and even adds a little drama, to songs like "T.N.U.C", "Into The Sun", and "Can't Be Too Long". And if there was anything that was most certainly not one-dimensional here, it was Mark Farner's guitar playing. Remember, this was a guy who had only learned to play "solos" a year before, and he only got even better with time. But I think his guitar playing, his phrasing and soloing, was spectacular all through this album--too bad production couldn't make it come out louder! But just because he wasn't quite on the level of a Jimmy Page or a Jimi Hendrix didn't make him a bad guitar player, or "one-dimensional", for that matter. He forged his own style, playing almost-Page style leads, and almost-Hendrix style rhythms.
Another high mark GFR gets for this album is originality. For a debut album to have ALL original music, and no covers, is quite an accomplishment, in and of, itself, and something I respect very highly. Mark wrote his own stuff for the group, and continued to do so for two more albums. The only other thing they did was re-arrange old songs from their previous group, The Pack, and make new songs out of them, much like Jimmy Page re-arranged old-Yardbird songs and riffs for Led Zeppelin. However, I still would have liked to hear a guitar-driven, GFR version of an old soul number, like "Land of 1,000 Dances", or "In the Midnight Hour", as I know they performed live on tour back in '69--It's only too bad Capitol records couldn't find a bootleg recording somewhere of them performing those two songs, when they re-mastered this disc to add bonus tracks. I think hearing them play, "Land of 1,000 Dances", would sound as unique as hearing Led Zeppelin play the old Motown-number, "We're Gonna Groove", and would have made this disc much more worthwhile, than adding an alternate-version of "Heartbreaker" with a tamborine! (By the way, who was playing that tamborine, anyway--Terry Knight?)
So contrary to what Rolling Stone mag said about this album back in '69, I consider this album very musical, multi-dimensional, and very listenable. But the drumming does send you up the wall, and that's only because production wasn't as balanced as it could have been. The album cover could have been a little-less cheesy--Grand Funk Railroad playing with "model trains"! In a way, it does sort of model itself after Cream's first album cover--with the black backdrop, and three guys in theme-oriented costumes. Production does get high marks for knowing when to use the speaker-to-speaker effects and the overdubbing--it's how Blue Cheer and The Stooges albums should have been done! But the balance of the bass-drums-guitar was severely out-of-whack, and as I said earlier, would be very much corrected for the next album--some might say, "over"-corrected. But that's just "Mr. Type-A" personality, Terry Knight, going from one extreme to the other. Overall, a great album, musically--probably one of the best of the 1960s, right at the end of the decade, but a "not-so-good" Knight production.
