Not the Who's best sessions, but overall a great repackage of some tracks worth listening to a few more times.

Middling Who.......2007-05-06

This is probably the worst Who album of their first decade, simply because the whole band was encouraged to write songs. Now, with Pete and John, that's fine: Boris the Spider, Whiskey Man, Run Run Run, So Sad About Us and the mini-opera title track all rule. But it's in the other two's songs where this falls apart: I Need You and See My Way are two of the wimpiest, most sterile Who songs ever, Cobwebs and Strange is stupid, but not in the "stupidly fun" sense, and their cover of Heat Wave is as bad as the two James Brown covers from the first. And Pete's Don't Look Away falls in the same category as the Keith and Roger songs. So if Townshend and Entwistle had written this whole album together, it would've been great. Now it's only lousy. And Happy Jack should've been made a part of the UK LP as well as the US one...

Quick One The Who.......2007-02-19

I love the Who, and this CD is just one of the best. Although, I really don't believe they made a bad album.

Worth getting for The mini-Opera .......2007-01-29

Pete only writes 3 songs Run Run Run,
So Sad About Us & A Quick One, While He's Away
for this record, but they are all classics and John writes 2 of his best ever, Whiskey Man and Boris the Spider. This album is very good and Roger's Don't Look Away is very good for someone who's not considered a songwriter.

A Botched One.......2006-12-07

The Who's second album falls a bit short of their fine debut, and is redeemed by a handful of slightly above average tracks rather than by great ones. Some have argued too many songwriters spoiled the record, as all members of the group made contributions. Not surprisingly, Townshend dominates the record. "Run Run Run" and "So Sad About Us" are probably the best of his batch, and enjoyable but somewhat slight "Happy Jack" was the single and most famous track. (Strangely, it is included only among the bonus tracks on the CD re-issue.) "A Quick One, While He's Away" was his first compostion of epic proportions, and a sign of things to come in the forms of Tommy and Quadraphenia. Daltrey, Townshend, and Entwistle take turns at the mike with equally good results. This is a great song, but it plays much better on the Live at Leeds CD. It is fleshed out more completely, delivered with deserving passion, and is preceded by some humorous on-stage banter. (Wes Anderson was wise to use the live version for the Rushmore soundtrack.) Entwistle began to develop his trademark of writing songs with dark humor and unsettling self-deprecation. On this album, he offers the story of the ill-fated "Boris the Spider" and "The Whiskey Man", at tale of alcohol-induced paranoid schizophrenia: "Seemingly I must be mad, insanity is fun." Moon throws in the instrumental "Cobwebs and Strange", a showcase for his feral drumming style, and the surpringly affecting "I Need You". Finally, Daltrey - a very infrequent songwriter - has only one song on the record, the middling "See My Way". (Oh yeah, there is also a superfluous cover of "Heat Wave".)

The CD re-issue adds several bonus tracks of fitful quality. "Disguises", "In the City", "Man With the Money", and the characteristically amusing "Doctor, Doctor" by Entwistle - who may well be the star of the record - help make the disc worth listening to in it's entirety. But the real problem with A Quick One is that it simply never catches fire. At this point, The Who had shown that they were able to crank out decent singles, and that they had the ability and the inspiration to achieve greater things. However, they had yet to deliver a solid album of all original material. That would change in a big way the following year (1967) with The Who Sell Out. But in the wake of A Quick One, the band still had some work to do before its legendary status would be secured.

Not My Style.......2007-05-11

This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!

Rockin' Western Collection.......2006-08-28

For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.

Hard to Find Great Western Themes .......2006-03-16

This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.

Western Music.......2005-07-29

I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."

A great follow-up.......2003-08-29

This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

If one has money, one is great........2002-02-19

The Marco Polo exploration of the music of Carl Michael Ziehrer continues. Volume 3 was recorded in 2000 by the same players as are heard in the other volumes, but the conductor this time was Christian Pollock, who had a hand in orchestrating one or two of the items. Several pieces receive their first ever recording.

Ziehrer, the slightly younger but chief rival of the Strauss brothers in Vienna, gave his dances and marches evocative and picturesque titles, just as they did. The piece I enjoyed most here is a march. Its title translates as "If one has money, one is great". Track 7 is a delightful set of Styrian dances.

naxos is the greatest budget label of all-time. i've gotten so many great discs from them, and never a bummer. as for this disc, it's a great idea(arrangements of the songs of stephen foster for 19th century brass band, performed on period instruments), wonderfully executed. i have many recordings of stephen foster material, and this is one of the best. this brass band sounds fantastic and the audio quality is very very fine. i highly recommend that you make this a part of your household.

Stephen Foster Played by a Saxhorn (not saxophone) Quintet.......2004-06-20

Imagine a post-Civil War family trooping to the town square on a fine summer evening to hear the town band play a concert of arrangements of popular tunes, that gentler period's equivalent of a rock concert of today. That's essentially what we have here. The Chestnut Brass Company, a Philadelphia brass quintet which on occasion plays on everything from Baroque sackbuts to the most modern trumpets and trombones, here plays on instuments of the saxhorn family. Saxhorns, invented by Adolphe Sax, the fellow who also invented the better-known saxophone, are brass instruments perfected in the 1840s. Their conical bore projects a uniquely sweet and mellow sound. They were exceedingly popular for town bands during the latter half of the century, but their use had waned by the turn of the 20th century. This quintet consists of an E flat soprano, a B flat soprano, an E flat alto, a B flat baritone, and a E flat contrabass saxhorn. The dulcet tones and sonic blend are a marvel to behold. Partly, of course, this is due to the expert playing by Bruce Barrie, Susan Sexton (or is it SAXton?), Marian Hesse, Larry Zimmerman, and Jay Krush.

Stephen Foster wrote very little purely instrumental music, but his songs fostered (pun unavoidable) innumerable instrumental arrangements. Those heard here are taken (and sometimes re-arranged) from the playbooks of such 19th-century bands as the Manchester, New Hampshire town band, the Boston Brass Band and the brass band of the 26th Regiment of North Carolina, not to forget the U.S. Marine Band. The tunes are arranged into quicksteps, waltzes, marches, schottisches and potpourris. Most of the familiar tunes are here: 'Beautiful Dreamer,' 'I Dream of Jeannie,' 'My Old Kentucky Home,' 'Camptown Races,' 'Come Where My Love Lies Dreaming,' and 'Some Folks Do' as well as plenty of relatively unfamiliar songs. And because these arrangements come from all over some of the tunes appear several times like old friends. Some of my own favorites are 'Some Folks' arranged by W. L. Baccus, 'Come Where My Love Lies Dreaming' arranged by Bruce Barrie, 'Camptown Quick Step' arranged by Jay Krush, and 'Gentle Annie' from the U.S. Marine Corps Band archives.

As an unabashed fan of the music of Charles Ives, I can't hear these arrangements without wondering which of these tunes Charlie heard (and played) when his own father, a former Civil War bandmaster, led his town band in Danbury, Connecticut.

Recommended for brass band lovers, Stephen Foster fans, and folks who like, say, the sound track to Ken Burns's 'Civil War' PBS documentary.

Just for clarification, this is a review of the true stereo version of "A Quick One". Since the CD and booklet of the stereo and mono reissues are exactly the same, there may be some confusion as to where reviews should be placed.
Anyway, the stereo version sounds quite good. Unlike the "My Generation" remixes, all the instruments are present (as far as I know). I do wish the left and right panning were a bit more extreme. I'm a big fan of that and it's very common for 60's style stereo mixes. But it still sounds massively better than the original mono. The bonus tracks are interesting. Most of which are also in stereo. ("Batman" is mono and "Disguises" is still in fake stereo)
Now about Happy Jack; Even though it wasn't on the original British LP, the producers still should have included it here. An acoustic version is included however.
Perhaps in the future, a CD of the Who's non-album singles will be remixed in stereo. (Substitute, Pictures of Lily, I'm a Boy, Anyway Anyhow Anywhere, etc.)

This album is in my girlfriend's dad's collection. Most of the songs are teenie 60s Whitey-McWhite romance pulp. (I love you; you know I'll be true etc) A few classics on the album, but I can't believe how many stars people are giving it.

Definate sophmore slump, but has a few good songs.......2005-09-19

Sandwhiched between two absolute masterpeices ("My Generation" and "The Who Sells Out") is this LP. Compared to both of those two classics, it is below par, but it is not without its merits. All four members of the band penned original material, which had both its good points and demerits. Pete Townshend was already established as a great songwriter, and he wrote most of the material on this album, which contains some good works but no outright classics. John Entwistle's "Whiskey Man" is a good and dark rocker, but "Boris the Spider" is nothing more than an entertaining novelty song. Roger Daltry's contribution is "See My Way", which is quite good. Keith Moon was one of the greatest drummers in rock 'n' roll (if not the greatest), but his two contributions "I Need You" and "Cobwebs and Strange" are below-par. By far all the good songs on this disc where written by the experianced Townshend. This was a dissapointment, but "The Who Sells Out" more than makes up for it. Only for completests.

A Quick One (Happy Jack) (1966.) Who's second album.

Following the release of the Who's first album, The Who Sings My Generation, the band returned to the studio to record their second full-length LP, A Quick One (Happy Jack.) Roger Daltry, Pete Townsend, John Entwistle, and Keith Moon had showed some serious potential on their first LP, but didn't exactly live up to it. How does the second album measure up? Read on and find out!

Essentially, this is the Who in transition. And for the most part, the album isn't a whole lot different from the band's first LP. I'd say the two are about tied in overall quality. The group seems to have somewhat of an imbalance of ideas on this record. For instance, while the band records their first truly lengthy song, A Quick One While He's Away (a song that was nine-plus minutes long was unheard of in these days), they also show a shortage of ideas. For example, the basic guitar riff in Run Run Run is taken directly from My Generation. I admit, the songs on here are generally more diverse than the ones on the band's first album, but in the end it seems unpolished, and like the record that came before, it shows a band with potential that hasn't yet learned to live up to it yet. In the end, it's a good album, but it's far from great.

A remastered version of this album was released, which throws in a lot of obscure bonus tracks - including a cover of the Beach Boys classic Barbara Ann, and even a cover of the theme to the sixties Batman TV series! Unfortunately, these tracks come at a price - THE SONG "HAPPY JACK" WAS NOT INCLUDED! I've heard of reissues of albums omitting tracks at times, but how could you possibly omit the TITLE track!? There IS an acoustic version as a bonus track, but it can't make up for the lack of the original version. You might want to hunt down the import version of the album, which isn't missing it.

There really isn't a whole lot else I can say. This is another good but not great album from the Who. It wouldn't be until their next one in which they really started to use their full potential. Take my advice - if you're new to the band, don't start here. Who's Next is probably the best album for new fans of the band to start with. Likewise, if you're a big enough fan that you want to buy this album, GET THE IMPORT! It's not missing Happy Jack.

Stereo Quick One.......2005-03-11

In 1995, the Who's 1st LP for the Reaction label, A Quick One, from 1966, was remastered, remixed in analogue and re-issued in the UK by Polydor (527 758-2), complete with 10 extra tracks and a colour booklet with extensive notes.

A Quick One, featuring a cover by the very fashionable Pop Art graphic artist Alan Aldridge, showed that the Who had developed a unique sound and style of their own. Gone was the profusion of cover versions as found on My Generation, their first album, with all members of the band contributing to the composer credits. Only one cover, Martha and the Vandellas' Heatwave, in an arrangement from an Everly Brothers album, made the final tracklisting (an earlier version had been dropped from the My Generation album, and in America even this new version was replaced by the hit single Happy Jack).

A Quick One lacked the wild savagery soundwise of the first album, but still had all the elements of it including Keith Moon's powerhouse drumming and chaotic creative energy, as showcased on the well-named instrumental Cobwebs And Strange. The songs were in the main light-hearted and enjoyably immature, John Entwistle's Boris The Spider and Whiskey Man in particular showed a unique humour. Pete Townshend's songwriting talents continued to develop. The album opened with his thunderous Run, Run Run, a song that had earlier been given to The Cat to record on a single produced by Pete Townshend. Along the way came So Sad About Us, later to be covered by the Breeders and the Jam (who also revived the Who's version of Heatwave). The album finale was the ten-minute mini-opera A Quick One (While He's Away), which set in motion a whole new direction for his talents, and led, of course, to Tommy.

The extra tracks began with most of the contemporaneous Ready Steady Who! EP: Batman, Bucket T and Barbara Ann, the three surf music covers from side 1, and Disguises from side 2 (Peculiarly, Circles is not included on this or, it seems, any other Who CD except in an earlier recording). The surfer sides were the influence of Keith Moon, who had played in a surf combo called the Beachcombers in the surfing paradise of Wembley, London.

The B-sides of Happy Jack (I've Been Away), Pictures Of Lily (Doctor, Doctor) and I'm A Boy (In The City) follow, all written or co-written by John Entwistle, and three previously unreleased tracks complete the package. These are an acoustic version of Happy Jack, a great cover of the Everly Brothers' Man With Money and an anarchic version of My Generation which appears to begin in mono and segues gloriously into a stereo feedback-drenched rendition of Land Of Hope And Glory. This was originally intended for the Ready Steady Who! EP, released to tie-in with their appearance on the famous TV show, but was not music from the show itself.

A Quick One was originally released in mono in the UK, and according to the booklet in both mono and stereo versions in the US, although the 1995 re-issue CD appears not to have had access to the stereo masters if such they were (they may just have been electronically re-channeled fake stereo). Run, Run, Run appeared in a stereo version previously available on the vinyl Backtrack 3 compilation sampler, but, apart from Whiskey Man the rest of the original album was monaural, with 5 of the bonus tracks in stereo, including the Batman theme, which may have come from the same Backtrack series.

This release of this stereo edition of the album has nothing on the CD itself to differentiate it from the 1995 edition which appeared alongside it on the record shop shelves and which had a sticker saying it was newly remastered and remixed. The publication date on both sleeve and disc is still given as 1995, and the booklet is an exact reprint of the 1995 edition. There is not even a sticker with additional information on the cover of the case of the British re-issue.

This poor and rather wasteful promotion and lack of demarcation is a shame because when I finally tracked down the correct copy it more than lived up to expectations. The whole of A Quick One is in full stereo. Run, Run, Run is in a new and slightly longer mix, and all the bonus tracks are stereo too, with the sole exception of the acoustic Happy Jack. This gives a bigger, clearer sound allowing many of the production subtleties to be fully appreciated for the first time thanks to the separation, especially for headphone listening, and particularly enhances the vocal harmonies.

The absence of a revised booklet means one unfortunately cannot tell whether these mixes are derived from 1966 stereo masters or were newly created from multi-track tapes for this release.
