Tom Petty is angry and disgusted with the music business and modern pop culture in general. The title track here tells of "the last human voice" that still holds integrity on the airwaves. "Money Becomes King" is the story of the rise and corruption of a rock star, which becomes a metaphor for the form itself. "Joe" is about a music CEO whose creed is: "You'll get to be famous / I get to be rich." Meanwhile, "When a Kid Goes Bad" and "Lost Children" are self-explanatory titles, describing the result of all this 21st-century ennui. There are great lyrics here, hitting everything from Britney to corporate sponsorship ("All the music gave me was a craving for lite beer"), but, musically, Petty and his band aren't quite up to their old standards. You can still hear classic rock references: "Money Becomes King" nicks the opening of the Turtles' "You Showed Me"; "When a Kid Goes Bad" is a pop variation on the Beatles' "I Want You (She's So Heavy)." And the piano-driven "Like a Diamond"--the best track--is almost a Name That Tune fest. Elsewhere, it gets a little plodding at times, but as a document of a middle-aged rocker who's mad as hell, it's very entertaining. --Bill Holdship

Death From Above 1979 made a big impact with their 2004 release You're A Woman, I'm A Machine, touring with Queens of the Stone Age and conjuring an impressive amount of what music journalists call "buzz." The ride was short-lived-they flamed out and disbanded in 2006-but the gaudy intensity that got everyone so excited lives on with MSTRKRFT, the alter ego of DEA's Jesse F. Keeler. Like an even dafter Daft Punk, The Looks reinterprets the hotel room-thrashing hedonism of Above as flat, French-synth "robot pop." It sounds like fun, and most of the time it is. Keeler's tongue is never far from his cheek, but it's not fully planted either. You never know if he's kidding on songs like "She's Good For Business" and its hokey clap machine. There's no doubt about Keeler's booty-shaking intent elsewhere on the record; "Paris" drives through hedonistic four-on-the-floor rhythms and there's no sitting still during the rollicking chorus of the single "Easy Love" or the fat, bent keyboards of "Neon Nights." The silicone glare of the record is wearying, and eight songs turn out to be more than enough. But open-minded fans of Above who can make the leap into full-on electronic will happily soak it up. -Matthew Cooke

Looking, looking.......2006-11-07

No band ever completely dies. Whenever a band breaks up or a frontman expires, you can count on at least one new band to rise from the ashes a year or so later.

So when Death from Above 1979 broke up awhile ago, it was only inevitable that something like MSTRKRFT would show up sooner or later. I have no idea what the name means, but I know what their debut "The Looks" is full of -- Daft Punk-style dance music, as done by robots.

It opens with the funky, blippy rhythms of "Work on You," which slithers around computerized beats and solid drum machines. But what makes it stand out is the robotic voice repeating, "I'm gonna make you mine... I'm gonna make you mine..." It's a bit like being ravished by HAL.

That same sound continues in the discoey and rather repetitive "Easy Love." Fortunately the sound changes dramatically with "She's Good For Business," with the girl's vocals and the hard beats, followed by the fuzz-rocky "Paris."

The beat continues through the rather repetitive "Looks," which is a good dancepunky song, but is dwarfed by the vaguely hip-hoppish "Street Justice." This short album rounds off with the swirling beats of "Bodywork," and the kitschy-futuristic "Neon Knights."

If MSTRKRFT has a flaw, it's a simple one -- all the songs follow the same formula, and they rarely stray from it. After a little while, I started to wish that they would try out something different, just to vary their sound a little.

But I have to admit, they have a knack with some dancey beats. There's a retro dance flavour to their music, and the rigid confines and slightly nuts feeling add to its appeal. And they do vary the formula a little, with swirly beats and retro-disco experimentation.

There aren't much in the way of lyrics, except for repeated lines like "Look... look..." and "Another killin' on the dance floor," which generally appear a few thousand times per song. But then, the vocals aren't about singing -- they're used like another set of beats, to accentuate the music.

MSTRKRFT's debut is relatively unmemorable, but very promising. Sort of Daft Punk's crazier little sibling, "The Looks" is a nice intro to their music -- here's hoping they mix it up a little more.

Electronic Goodies.......2006-09-24

This album will please all the Daft Punk fans who have been disappointed with their last effort, Human After All. The Looks is fueled by high tempo, catchy and groovy melodies every house fanatics has been craving for the last few years. MSTRKRFT is simply brilliant when it comes to create multi-layered dancefloor tracks reminiscent of the Best of French House, melody driven, bass pumping with insane rythms.
The highlights on this album are 'Monster Hospital' and 'Paris!', and the only thing wrong with this album is its length: way, way too short.
Party people, this one is for you.

Wow!!!.......2006-08-08

I'd heard of these guys before & had no idea they had an entire album out. I happened upon this gem by accident & let me just say WOW, I'm impressed. Other people are comparing these guys to the next Daft Punk & to be fare I suppose there might be a slight likeness to their music, but as a whole these guys have a sound all their own. As far as Daft Punk is concerned they haven't made any descent music since their 1st album(ya, I'm one of those guys that liked "Homework" better)and have been given far more credit than is deserved. There are 8 full length (meaning over 3/4 minutes, "THANK YOU!!!")tracks here, my favorites are #1 "Work On You" & #8 "Neon Knights", all are good though & anyone'll make your fanny shake. Any fan of electro house will totally dig this album, pure quality stuff!!

Fantastic.......2006-07-22

This new Album from MSTRKRFT is fantastic. Work on you is super and easy love just blew me away, I got it as a free download and have waited eagerly for the album. They are a fine successor of Daft Punk and I highly recommend this.

The Looks.......2006-07-22

I must say, this album made me get up, throw multiple lightswitch raves, and then sit back down satisfied. Many say that it doesn't have enough to give. To some it doesn't, but I find it incredibly satisfying. If you are a Death From Above 1979 fan or just a fan of Jeese Keelers work, then I recommend it.

The Last Resort, a surprisingly accessible and wide-ranging work by minimal and tech-house phenom Anders Trentemøller, is a winter wonderland of quiet phosphorescence and pristine beats. Not that the Danish composer/producer/remixer is above contrasts, as in "Evil Dub," where he allows down-tuned and distorted guitars to run like the proverbial bull in a china shop of elegant, understated programming. But tracks like "While the Cold Winter Waiting" beg comparison to the frosty, glockenspiel-laced ambience of Iceland's múm, and the closer, "Miss You," is a hypnotic lullaby sure to receive ample acclaim. After all, Trentemøller's music is distinctly his own, and his eerie command of dynamics allows him a broad palette, exemplified by a gripping bit of turntablism that pops up in one of the album's first singles, "Always Something Better." The second disc's bonus material reveals the man the DJ community has long known: the patient architect who unobtrusively builds beats, loops, and motifs into a critical mass of refined minimalism. All this leaves little doubt that The Last Resort will earn Trentemøller converts from downtempo and electronica circles well beyond his established fan base. --Brent Kallmer

The Last Resort is one of those CD's I never get tired of listening to. Beautiful mixing, very subtle textures and soundscapes weave throughout.

My personal favorites are "Moan" and "Take Me Into Your Skin."

Highly recommended.

Good, not great.......2007-02-01

Some of the other reviewers have suggested that this is forward-looking, boundary-pushing electronic music, others have suggested that this is soul-less and lacking in warmth.

Neither estimation is completely correct (the latter one being straight-up wrong):

It is a good album, and as long as you enjoy and are sufficiently familiar with current electronic music ---particularly of a micro or tech-house variety--- you should be able to find some emotional resonance in this recording.

That having been said, this album sounds to me like an artist expanding on micro/tech house roots, allowing his other interests to seep in. I hear something like a "Villalobos-meets-Badalamenti" aesthetic.

The film-music characteristics are sufficient to appeal to listeners outside of the standard electronic fanbase; I think this is why some reviewers feel it to be great, not realizing that there are other albums of comparable mood and quality.

Don't misunderstand me---it is very good. Well-produced, interesting, warm, and varying in textures. It does not possess the unique greatness of the Badalamenti or Morricone soundtracks it at times evokes. There is an independent voice here, but I do not think it is developed enough at present to be considered truly great.

There is much potential here, and I will be waiting to hear future releases...

A work of musical genius.......2007-01-25

Since signing with Poker Flat Recordings in 2005, Anders Trentemøller has rapidly ascended the ranks of the electronic music world. His unique, unmistakable style - minimal, crunchy beats and beeps - has earned him distinction and recognition from a legion of fans. Finally, he has released The Last Resort, an excellent album that showcases his exceptional musical talent and is certain to gain him even more fans.

The album begins on a strong note with Take Me Into Your Skin, a deep, multi-layered track with a grinding, deep melody. From here, it goes on to Vamp, a groovy track that some find bizarre and uninteresting but I personally love. Next is Evil Dub, which recalls the crunchy, bass-heavy style of many of Trentemøller's singles. Seamlessly, it fades into Always Something Better, a haunting tune that is probably my favorite song on the album.

Once Always Something Better fades out, the album moves back into chillout mode with While The Cold Winter Waiting, a lovely, melodic song that serves as an excellent transition into the more bassy Nightwalker. After this is the brief but epic Like Two Strangers, which pounds its way through to the next track: the heavily-mixed and disorienting The Very Last Resort.

After The Very Last Resort, the album moves into a more upbeat style with Snowflake, Chameleon and Into The Trees (Serenetti Part 3), three bassy and driving tracks. Finally, Trentemøller heads in for a melodic close with Moan and Miss You (the latter of which is probably the most beautiful track on the album).

The Last Resort is a web of gorgeous melodies, beats and patterns that weave together to create an engaging, mind-bending musical experience - easily one of the best albums of 2006. No artist has quite the same blend that Trentemøller seems to effortlessly create with each new release. Undoubtedly, this album will ensure Trentemøller's position as one of the top artists in electronic music.

I have only heard his remixes of other artists until now. This album intrigued me because the label it is released on is one of my all time favorites "Poker Flat". Trentmoller really pushes the electronic and or techno genre foward with this offering. We need more artists putting out quality like this for electronic music to get more notariety.

Although "house" driven, the experimental nature of this album is what suspends it above the cliche often found in this genre. One gets the sense that there is true inspiration at the heart of this work. This is an artist to watch closely.

Petty would be my DJ!.......2006-12-28

I will begin by saying that this album is not as musically fulfilling or rewarding as "Echo" (1999) but it still packs a punch. The message here about the music industry is all true, and at times, quite humorous. But perhaps my favorite song on the whole album is "Dreamville" when Tom P seems to drift away into memories of his childhood. It is truly a magical song that makes me think back about my own days as youngster. While this album is not an essential disc in the Petty discography, if you are a die-hard Petty fan, like me, than you should give it a listen.

Great Rock Album.......2006-08-31

I was a huge Tom Petty Fan in the early 80's and 90's and then I stopped buying his (an most other Classic Rock) music after Wildflowers. I recently purchased Highway Companion (Based on it's good reviews) and I loved it. I went back and purchased all of his releases I missed including Echo, She's the One, and finally 'The Last DJ'. Echo and She's the One are classic Petty and they took me a few times of playing them before the songs grew on me. With the Last DJ I wasn't sure what I was going to get (based on some of the negative reviews and the small music clips provided on Amazon). Needless to say, I just finished listening to it and I loved it. Every song on the CD was good if not great. How this CD slipped past the masses is beyond me. If you want typical Petty, this CD may not be for you...if you want a great Classic Rock Album buy it now.

end is lagging.......2006-08-11

Tom's "Last DJ" is an attack at the current state of the music industry. From many of his songs, one can tell that he thinks that the music industry is suffering because of monetary greed. The first seven songs of this disc follow the themes of which I have just described. However beginning with "Blue Sunday" the songs, to me, loose their focus and are boring. Blue Sunday is a psuedo-love song that moves very slowly, as do all of the last five songs. One song "The Man who Loves Women" is completly out of place on this albumn. However, the first seven songs are very enjoyable. I would listen to the last five songs, and if you can tolerate them, then buy this CD. If you are new to petty, try another of his better albumns such as Damn the Torpedos, Full Moon Fever, or Into the Great Wide Open.

Tom Petty is AMAZING...........2006-07-06

Tom Petty is amazing. He is touring now with the HB and no band can touch them for perfection. This album is great. See it perfomed on the DVD with a full symphony. Tom Petty never stops pushing to do something new and different. He is so talented and after all of these years (30 this yr.) still remains true to his craft. Anyone who grew up in the 60's would feel as TP does about todays music scene, radio,etc. I feel that kids today are cheated out of knowing really great music performed by real musicians/bands. We took our 16yr. old to see TP/HB and he put all of TP's music on his ipod the next day. Rap,Britteny,Jessica Simpson,Beyonce,etc. is just a lot of noise.

Let's get the inevitable comparison out of the way: like the Postal Service, the Junior Boys craft a wan indie electro-pop variation on blue-eyed soul. But in contrast to Ben Gibbard's romantic yearning, Junior Boys singer Jeremy Greenspan's voice emerges from the depths of a post-traumatic chill, emanating a disappointment too laconic to accurately be called sadness. "High Come Down" could be Darryl Hall produced by Timbaland, but only in an alternate universe where neither man was interested in selling records or monopolizing your attention--the beats shuffle of their own accord rather than skittering playfully, and Greenspan sings as though there's a sleeping baby in the next room. The group's new-wave influences are similarly easy to spot, yet they appear only as silhouettes, drained of the original artists' egotism. Over time, the Junior Boys' teasing reserve proves itself as engaging as most other artists' forceful intensity. --Keith Harris

I know this got rave reviews from the professionals but I just could't get in to it. I listened 4 times and tried hard. Not enough melody I guess. I like electronica but this one didn't make sense to me. I'll put it on my shelf for a rainy day and try again sometime.

Petty Rocks.......2003-09-17

I've always thought that studio albums don't even compare with live performances. I've also always loved Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. But even I was astounded at how great "The Last DJ" sounds live. From the opening notes of the title track to Mike Campbell's solo on "Lost Children" to the final chords of "Can't Stop The Sun", Tom and the Heartbreakers sound incredible. It's almost like listening to a completely new album. And that's not all. The band goes on to play classics including "Change of Heart" and "I Need To Know", then closes with a ten-minute-long "Mary Jane's Last Dance" and a "You Wreck Me" encore.

Unfortunately, the editing is poor. In some songs the camera changes every three seconds. Some shots don't last for more than half a second. Occasionally the camera will slow down for a minute to watch Tom sing or to pan across the stage, but it doesn't happen often enough. One of the longest shots is of a woman in the audience singing along to two verses of a song. Who knows what's happening on stage. Also, the lighting on some camera shots leaves a lot to be desired. In other places, however, the colors and lighting effects are awesome. Overall, the quality of the music makes the camera problems seem minor.

The extra features are hardly worth mentioning: two TV commercials promoting "The Last DJ" album and some random outtakes of Tom making a video.

Legal Stuff Apart.......2007-04-21

To understand this review, take a look at the reviews of the other volumes in this series...
Some of the music on this series is so weird and beautiful that the composers should be grateful that it is released here. They should think of this series as a sampler which might atract us, the general public, into further investigation of their work, which we most probably would have never had the chance to hear it or become aware of its existence or of the composers/artists. Don't be so greedy... for I believe you have been done a favor. The same goes for the other volumes of this series. TWO THUMBS UP!

dull song selection, awful sound quality.......2005-06-28

The first track is basically a cappella and annoying, with the screams and shouts of a club crowd in the background...screams which continue throughout the ENTIRE disc. The accapella vocal carries into the second track, a soft house tune. Ultra Nate's Free kicks in next. In terms of the quality of this disc, it sounds like they put mikes in front of each of the speakers in the club and recorded live. It has a "warehouse" feel to it, especially with the constant shouts of dancers in the background. This is not something I want to hear on my home stereo system. I want clear, well-mastered music. On CD1, the tracks are rather raucous and non-melodic, and we're not even treated to much in the way of Jonathan Peters exclusive remixes. Lift Me Up really begins the party, and is a slammin' way to segue into Corrupt, the most incredible track on this disc-a real diva vocal anthem, that doesn't skimp on the minute count. This followed by a 50 second a cappella Bob Marley vocal. Mother Earth is a moody female vocal track, and disc one finishes off with Hani's classic mix of Delacy.

Disc 2 starts off strong with Flower Duet in a long version-but of course, those ridiculous crowd shouts continue. A streak of vocal tracks, mostly with a trance feel-but a really boring trance feel, not NRG trance, follows. They were all big hits at the time, but they're sounding dated at this point. The second half of the disc manages to squeak out more power and energy than the first.

Despite a couple of standout tracks on this entire compilation, the "live at the club" feel of this disc just makes it sound like a really bad bootleg. Track times:

Beyond Amazing.......2003-08-30

Jonathan Peters is in one word, a GOD. There is not much else I can say when I hear and see this cd/dvd set. If only he was recognized on a large scale outside of Manhattan, NY...he is easily one of the best DJ's of our time.

This cd/dvd set brings the heart of the legendary Sound Factory NYC to your home and then some. Something here for those older and younger, classics that will definitely appeal to the old school clubber but still be recognized by the new schoolers. Most of these classics span a range of time from 1996 to 2001, Jonathan Peters did a good job compiling this mix. The undeniably amazing track "Free" by Ultra Nate to the highly kinetic and progressive "Bailamos" by M3 (Matt Darey Mix) show Peters understanding of not only hard new york house music but his love for music as a whole.

The most recognizable tracks on this set will more than likely be, "I Know You Love Me Too" by Chris Raven, "Everytime" by Lustral (Original Nalin & Kane Remix)...two tracks Paul Oakenfold has played a lot in the past. Plus the legendary Tiesto mix of Sarah McLachlan's "Silence", originally mixed by Delerium. And that brings us to the very popular "Not Over Yet" by Grace, a great song, circa 1999.

The first cd is pretty much filled with Sound Factory classics that Factory patrons will recognize straight off but will definitely over please anyone that loves house music. You can't help but get up and yell in excitement when Jonathan performs one of the most unforgettable build ups ever on "Lift Me Up", it just rocks the room. If you are a fan of the house/trance "build up", then you must get this set just for that track, it's that great.

The second cd is a little lighter but still amazing. Jonathan switches out of his hard ny house mode and moves into more progressive and trancy hits. And the one gripe I have about the set is on the second cd. Towards the end of the set he stops mixing the tracks together with the usual expertise he does so well. Other than that there are just no other complaints I can register, this is a 99% perfect set, something you can't find that much these days.

The dvd is also amazing and easily the best Sound Factory has put out so far. For those that don't go to Factory or haven't experienced a real New York underground house club, it gives you a very good glimpse at what Factory faithful get to experience every weekend. It shows the clubs progression throughout the night and day, starting at 3am and ending at 9pm (SF starts up at 11pm on Sat and goes 'till Monday morning many times). It will also bring a smile to the Factory fans face and prepare you for your next Sunday!

Wild, crazy, sexy and high in energy, Sound Factory simply can't be touched, even with the current state of Manhattan nightlife (soon to be hopefully solved by the Fall opening of Spirit (at Twilo), Crobar and Avalon (at Limelight). Together with the insanely wonderful Jonathan Peters, SF will be here for a long time to come and will always be a place where other clubs around the world look to emulate.
