Tusk [Extra tracks] [Original recording remastered]

If your personal turmoil and professional musical struggles suddenly yielded more success and money than you could ever imagine, what would you do? A lesser '70s rock band recorded Don't Look Back; Fleetwood Mac made Tusk. Whether it was a firm, middle-finger salute to the weighty commercial expectations foisted upon them in the wake of Rumours' burgeoning successes or a restless creative response to the then-shifting tides of pop music taste, this 1979 20-track double album remains the most consistently adventurous project any incarnation of the veteran band ever attempted. This remastered, double-disc deluxe edition's 21-track bonus disc of demos and outtakes seems to argue for the latter, new wave-fueled influences, bringing together a dizzying range of performances that underscore everything from Lindsey Buckingham's Brian Wilson jones (the warm, inventive harmonies of the band's dreamy outtake of the Beach Boys chestnut "Farmer's Daughter") to Christine McVie's knack for jazz-bluesy heat ("One More Time," which ultimately became "Over and Over") and pop hooks ("Think About Me") and Stevie Nicks's pop-goddess hoodoo (deliciously spare, fragile versions of "Sara," "Storms," and "Sisters of the Moon"). Most of the demos and outtakes here are imbued with a funky, loose-limbed spirit that offer new insight into their creation. But, as on the finished album, it's Buckingham's endlessly inventive creative spirit that dominates, from the chunky-rhythmed "Can't Walk out of Here" and "Out on the Road" (which became "The Ledge" and "That's Enough For Me," respectively) to three separate early recordings that chronicle the evolution of "I Know I'm Not Wrong." Rumours may be ubiquitous; Tusk remains unique. --Jerry McCulley

A liner portrait of the big Mac, then coming off the commercial bonanza of Rumours, shows them looking anxiously at guitarist, singer, songwriter, and de facto auteur Lindsey Buckingham, a moment given weight by the sprawling ambitions behind this 1979 double album. Buckingham's superb sense of pop craft had catapulted the once blues-based rockers into multiplatinum ubiquity, and he responded not with a safe return to form but with an invitation for his songwriting partners to chase their respective muses. Comparisons to the Beatles' White Album abounded and remain apt: Stevie Nicks twirls dreamily through extended variations on her crystal visions, Christine McVie turns in a reliably fine set of sunny pop-rock cruisers and tender ballads, and Mick Fleetwood and John McVie sustain their reputation as one of rock's most powerful yet deft rhythm sections. Buckingham provides the wild cards, in largely self-recorded plunges into his own skittish psyche, culminating in the massive title song, beefed up by the University of Southern California's marching band, but more cannily in dreamy music-box exercises ("That's All for Everyone") and sudden bursts of gonzo, fuzz-toned rock ("That's Enough for Me"). Better than its detractors thought upon release, Tusk was a brave platinum "failure" that actually charts where subsequent Mac and Buckingham projects would go. --Sam Sutherland

A good album, and well worth the money. It is; however; not the best from Fleetwood Mac.

4 out of 5 stars Tusk (1979) 5 STARS.......2006-06-15

This album is absolutely brilliant. Its not that experimental actually. This is real music. The members of Fleetwood Mac, mainly Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, have an immense amount of unfathomable musicianship. The song "Beautiful Child" is absolutely beautiful. Lindey always plays such a good guitar on the Fleetwood Mac albums. Nothing really compares to his guitar solo on "Go Your Own Way". Tusk is amazing just like all their albums.

3 out of 5 stars People seem to want to write a long review about this album..........2005-12-28

... given Fleetwood Mac's mega-success with "Rumours," their supergroup status, broad appeal, double album venture, comparisons to Beatles "White Album," etc. etc... You've probably already read all about that.

Bottom line is, many tracks sound unfinished, like demos with the rhythm section plodding along and along. There are many good ideas in the songs, but they probably could have used some tinkering and mixing around. If they compressed the sounds of this album into 11 tracks instead of 20, taking musical elements from most songs and combining them into a manageable number of tracks, then this would have been an excellent album on par with Rumours - but the group decided to put nothing to the cutting board and not to refine many songs ("Save Me a Place," anyone?). There are some great singles on this album though - "Sisters of the Moon," "Sara," Tusk" being the best.

This all being said, this is not a boring album. You have three talented songwriters - Buckingham, Nicks, McVie - each with a different musical style. There are too many tracks to digest, so you'll always discover something new with each listen.

5 out of 5 stars A MASTERPIECE.......2005-08-28

This album represents the efforts of one of the most innovative bands of the time period. It is truly a "musicians" album, and not for the casual "pop" music listner. Maybe that is why it never really managed to become a big seller due to the fact that it really was too involved and complicated for the average pop listerner to appreciate. From what I understand, the songs were written in and experminental style of using two keys. To illustrate this...try to play any of the songs "by ear" on a piano....it is impossible to find a key. Most striking is the guitar counterpoint and slide work on "Storms". It is in a word, breathtaking, along with the electric piano work circling S. Nicks vocals. This album is a must buy for anyone who truly appreciates fine musicianship.

5 out of 5 stars who could not like tusk?.......2005-08-22

If it wasn't for Tusk coming after Rumours Tusk could've been the greatest rock 'n' roll album ever. Christine was defeintly going through a blues phase through this album which is definetly shwon throuogh "Over and Over" and "Brown Eyes" yet still created great rock and pop songs like "Think About Me" and "Never Forget". Buckingham songs were rockish with a small hint of pop. These two types of music created quite a bit of contrast which is just one fragment of the things that make this album great. Stevie song writting skills have grown greatly and are shown greatlly in Tusk. Espicaly in "Sisters Of The Moon" and "Sara". Mick's drum skills are getting more exeleent each album and the some goes for John. My advice dont listen to people who people who say that Tusk is not good. BUY TUSK NOW!!!

5 out of 5 stars Hated It Then.......But Love It Now!.......2007-06-18

I bought the original double album back in 1979 (I was a Junior in High School) and had mix emotions when I first listened to it. Lindsey's music was a neurotic mess, while Christine's was too slow and boring and Stevie was becoming more elusive than ever! Well I was wrong and now it's a complete masterpiece of a band during its hiatus and trying to keep it all together. I still argue thou that it sounds like all 3 band members recorded their first solo albums with Tusk instead of as a band.

5 out of 5 stars An unbelievable line-up!.......2007-06-13

This remastered version of Fleetwood Mac's 1979 double LP hit album features a multitude of previously unreleased tracks that I believe were recorded during these very sessions and had to be excluded to facilitate(fill to maximum capacity) 2 LP's. I believe the band and their producer chose the very best recordings for the LP. Anyway, now for the hits:SARA,by Nicks, which plays for approximately 7 minutes,is pretty cool. The title track, features a marching band and an elephant's blaring trunk. Those songs were recycled for GREATEST HITS,released in late 1988 or early '89. They also appeared on 2002's THE VERY BEST OF FLEETWOOD MAC,along with THINK ABOUT ME,STORMS and SISTERS OF THE MOON. All the content of this disc would facilitate four LP's,which would have been awesome and priced at approximately $20 apiece(in the late 70's and early 80's). The other songs are great.

5 out of 5 stars Review.......2007-02-21

I haven't heard this for 15 years. I finally got the CD and it's even better than I remembered. I've always liked the drums in Fleetwood Mac.

5 out of 5 stars Buckingham is a Genius.......2007-02-19

This album is a masterpiece, it's almost a Lindsay Buckingham solo album in all but name. The public never really "got it" apart from Stevies "Sara", "Think About Me" and "Tusk". I think it's way over peoples heads, I have a lot of respect for Buckingham because he experimented and moved forward here, instead of delivering what most of the people wanted, a "Rumours Part 2". He is the Brian Wilson of our generation.

5 out of 5 stars At First.......2007-02-03

When this was released in the late 70's I was not a big fan of it, but have grown to like it with time and consideration. I am glad they rereleased it without it cut to pieces.

4 out of 5 stars An experiment gone wild.......2004-08-20

I found this album very interesting to listen to. I am a huge Fleetwood Mac fan who just happened to stumble across this from reading Lindsey Buckingham's interview where he mentioned that he'd been listening to it a lot at the time. Whenever he mentions music I'm not familiar with, I look into it.

I can see why he'd be interested in it. Tusk is by far the roughest cut and most experimental of the Fleetwood Mac albums, and some of that same spirit is definately in Camper Van Beethoven's version of it. I've never heard of anyone covering an entire album before though.

I would say that this album is not for fans of Fleetwood Mac who keep close to the pop side of the music industry. It is waaay out there (what they used to call "alternative") and is just not intended for the average music consumer. The sound effects are warped and layered heavily upon each other. The vocals are strained and at times can be considered "bad singing" in the same way that some people think Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, and Neil Young can't sing. It's very expressive and odd, but I still enjoy listening it to anyway.

I love this album and listen to it repeatedly. But I have very broad tastes in music. I wouldn't recommend this album to people who have trouble expanding their musical universe very far beyond the typical mainstream rock/pop genre. It's only going to appeal to people who can accept that it's really waaaay out there and just enjoy it for what it is.

It's not as good as the original Tusk album, but it shines a fun and interesting light on songs that I've loved for many years.

2 out of 5 stars This Blows!.......2004-03-26

No matter what type of artistic liberty that one may take in interpreting other band's music, one should never slaughter what was truely some of the best music ever made in the 20th century. I have a sense of humor and could appreicate if this album were a parity of sorts..but I don't hear it that way. I think if someone were to carry out the brilliant idea of covering an entire album, they should do it with creative freedom, not complete idiocy. I guess I just didn't get it. It was painful to listen to!

5 out of 5 stars David Lowery.......2004-02-10

The more I hear this album the more I love it. This is one of the albums that Lindsey Buckingham (one of my favorite guitarists of all time) was listening to "from his Rolling Stones interview 2003 ?" for a while. I think David is geneous (like Bob Dylan) and the musicians are some under rated cool guys. I can't wait for the next CVB or Cracker album.

4 out of 5 stars Worth The Price For CVB Fans.......2003-11-10

If you are familiar with both CVB's music and the original Fleetwood Mac "Tusk," you will laugh all the way through this album.

The high point for me was "Sisters Of The Moon." The song, originally, was Stevie Nicks at her Stevie Nicksiest. In Camper's version, however, the vocals are "performed" by a speech synthesizer- the gushy, drama-queen anthem becomes a robotic voice-mail announcement.

The only reason I didn't give this five stars is that the whole album has a slapdash quality to it-- I wish they'd taken a little more time with the arrangements and production. With a bit more attention to detail, this might've even been Camper's commercial (?) breakthrough.....well, maybe.

5 out of 5 stars Great album for both bands.......2003-09-21

I don't give 5 stars often. I'm not a huge Camper Van Beethoven fan. I like them a lot but I would never consider myself a "fan". The same goes for Fleetwood Mac. This is, though, by fare my favorite Mac album. I was having a conversation with my friend when I said that fact and he played the CVB album for me. I was hooked. I would love to hear what Buckingham thinks about this because in a lot of ways I think it did what the Mac never could.

Recorded while on a songwriting break snowed in while the drummer was nursing a broken arm, this album, I feel, combines the genius of CVB's odd approach and the Mac's songwriting and odd arrangement (on this album). The reason I seperate CVB's approach and Buckinham's arrangement is that I feel that CVB maintained the spirit of Buckingham's arrangment but interpreted it in their own way.

Probably in a lot of ways Tusk is to Camper Van Beethoven as it is to Fleetwood Mac. It will never be a hit for them (even on their scale) and its a little "out there" just in a different way. But for both I think its their best album. Then again, I like Beefheart.

There I was in Tokyo and I found my version of heaven. Yamaguchi Towers or something the place was called. Seven floors of music and music related stuff.

Two albums I picked up were this release - which I believe is the first solo album by this guy and also his slightly later album called Wa.

My advice is to go straight to Wa, for this album is horrid. Track 6 is called Gunshots and is one of the few highlights. The rest is dreadful. This guy can really, really play. His style is one that I love so much and it's such an important part of the sound of his usual band Loudness that where this uninspired pile came from is beyond me. It's not badly played - just bad! I must admit that I only have the original recording but even re-recording this wouldn't help, and on the couple of tracks with vocals - it's enough to clear a building.

The title sums this up - it doesn't even make sense. Tusk of Jaguar (take another bite). Seriously, with all the tourists etc around couldn't they of walked out onto the sidewalk to ask a passing Westerner if the title at least made grammatic sense?

Please see my review of his album Wa - which is a totally different beast!

3 out of 5 stars Pelican Fans: Read Before Purchase.......2007-07-03

A little warning, Tusk is nearly nothing like Pelican, as "heavy" as you may think Pelican is, there exists a vast world outside of postmetal/ambient/drone that defines "heavy" a little differently. In the case of Tusk, I think the group is taking notes more from the grind/crust/doom genres than the afore mentioned. Now, if 'Australasia' is your personal favorite Pelican album, and if their song 'Drought' represents everything you wish Pelican could consistantly sound like, than Tusk may actually please your palette. Their sound is raw and dark, but has an underlying groove (yes, metal can groove too)that cannot be denied. I found listening to be, in the literal sense of the word, entertaining. The album offers just a half an hour of unapologetic, unpolished, "F#$K YOU! SUFFER OUR VISION" style metal. Not for everyone... oh and the drummer (in my opinion) is the weak link.

4 out of 5 stars Tusk - 'Tree Of No Return' (UK Amazon review).......2006-02-17

'Tree Of No Return' is grim. Very grim. And not, of course, in a muddy black metal way or a sub-frequency drone way - Tusk's medium is more towards intense, discordant noisecore with a miserable and hopeless air about it, courtesy of the King-Buzzo-meets-gargling-serial-killer vocals. Coupled with Aaron Turner's dripping, ominous artwork, 'Tree Of No Return' is an utterly bleak spasm of twisted riffs and obtuse arrangements, geared towards rendering the album (nearly - it's less than 20 minutes long) as a whole piece rather than a collection of songs. Not that they much resemble 'songs' anyway.

The production is murky, which is not helped by the general nastiness of the riffs, but what one loses in clarity is more than made up by successful delivery. Of course it's possible to draw parallels with other bands, and if pushed I'd name Discordance Axis, 'Times Of Grace'-era Neurosis, Pig Destroyer at their creepiest and naturally Pelican (the loose, ringing dischord riffs are equally as apparent here, if not more so), but somehow they don't seem to add up to Tusk. The reason for this is that 'Tree Of No Return' is technically a concept album telling the story of a man losing himself to madness, and none of the above bands have tried this approach. As the music progresses, it gets more unhinged and by the time the squealing psychedelic insanity of 'Ursus Arctus - Walk The Valley' subsides, you'll feel like you've been in a kind of sick musical washing machine. It is constantly edgy.

Plus, the CD-ROM features are excellent. We're treated to a raw-as-hell promo as well as a few even-rawer-than-hell live videos from several obscure locations inside America, each offering a snapshot of Tusk's frantic and occasionally terrifying live performance.

Mission accomplished, then, for Tusk. Sadly, it's been so well accomplished that one has to be in a seriously deranged mood to play it at all. But that's no obstacle for me, nor for most of Tusk's potential market (HydraHead-Heads), so 'Tree Of No Return' is a winner in my book.

One more thought: if this ever gets picked out of a second-hand dump bin on the strength of its artwork (which is considerable), I would absolutely love to see the punter's face when he listens to it.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful and original and weird and heavy and listenable.......2005-02-12

members of Pelican embark on a mission of heavy, experimental quasi-grindcore. it's heavy (as you would expect from members of Pelican), and really weird, but sort of in an accessible way (not in, say, a Boredoms kind of way, where after listening to it you feel like you just ate a bunch of acid of something). it's weird in a way that makes you want to keep listening to it because it's awesome. it has moments of atmosphere, moments of crushing heaviness, and a few moments of really nice melody. it's really, really great. and at a mere 23 minutes, you can listen to it over and over and over.

4 out of 5 stars Experimentation gone horribly right..........2005-01-12

This is like some hellish mix of Pelican(I guess theres a member or two of theirs in Tusk),Mayhem,Khanate and Human Remains...that's all I can really come up with at the moment. This album can turn on a dime from being slower, more atmosphere and mood oriented to grinding blackened noise experimentation...Theres nothing else to do but listen and let this take over you like the black plague.

5 out of 5 stars Evil and scary.......2004-12-11

I mean, one of the song titles is "Starvation Dementia." This is the sound of serious nightmares. Fans of Wolf Eyes, Khanate, Zeek Sheck oughtta like it. But to everyone else, including fans of other Hydra head and A Turner music, it does not rock.

I'm a big Dead C guy. My favorite Dead C release is "White House". What I dig about "Tusk" is the gorgeous blend of New Zealand noise/rhythmic krautrock-like drumming/basement psych. I think the song "Head" is the highlight of this collection. "Head" is a 12 minute psych exploration of your own bone marrow. Exquisite, beautiful/brutal, revolutionary.

which is the hyped Dead C Holy Grail since Steven Malkmus raved about it as one of his top two fave albums. I think Tusk has far more dynamic a progression of tunes, and the vocals seem more organic here amidst the noise. The synths on the end of the title track, the agonized doom blended into a free-for-all Stoogian (in both senses of the term) assault make for an enjoyable disk to accompany any stream-of-consciousness activity in which you are engaged. It's actually great driving music if you're in one of those Ritalin moods. By this 1997 stage in their long career, the experimental tendencies that dragged down H70sR, in my opinion, are streamlined into more linear formations which drag the songs past the sludge rather than leaving them stranded in the gunk. The band sounds like it's having fun here, and calling any CD Tusk and featuring a grimy line drawing (sort of Tenniel meets Gorey) of a girl apparently being devoured headfirst by a ravenous amphibious beast, shows the humor that lurks beneath the whirlwind of passionate full-on intensity that even rock snobs can appreciate as essential.

Worth tracking down as one of their three best--and a good companion to the more minimal and quieter 2001 New Electric Music and the far earlier Eusa Kills, both of which have a rather Eno-esque patina mixed into the more garish surface texture for winning effect. And no, the Fleetwood Mac song is nowhere to be found here, in case you wound up here by mistake.

4 out of 5 stars What's Wrong With You People ?!?!?!?!?!.......2002-08-29

Sad, so sad to see that nobody has reviewed this lonely little album. The Dead C are, alternately, either one of the most groundbreaking "rock" bands of the last couple of decades, OR they are a huge hoax played on the record collector scum of the universe. Either way, they get my vote for BAND of the ERA. Anyone with even the slightest interest in drone, heavy sound experimentation, hypnotic repitition, DIY recording, improvisation, and general guitar and drums clutter and clatter, needs to get their hands on anything this band from New Zealand has produced before they all disappear from this veil forever. TUSK, in particular, is a fine place to start. Sometimes executed with a quiet reserve that is downright ominous, the (mostly) lengthy songs spill over into orgies of feedback. Sheer bliss, but make no mistake, it ain't pretty.
