Alice Cooper's Greatest Hits
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
If it weren't for Alice Cooper's onstage antics, Kiss, Marilyn Manson and Glen Danzig might have evolved into summery pop artists suitable for family picnics. Yet as Alice Cooper's Greatest Hits record attests, the grandfather of shock rock brought much more to the rock arena than boa constrictors and simulated decapitations. In addition to classic hard rock anthems like "I'm Eighteen," "No More Mr. Nice Guy," and "School's Out," Cooper unleashed rollicking barroom rockers like "Under My Wheels" and tugged at the heartstrings with cuts like "Desperado" and "Hello Hooray." In retrospect, his songs have more in common with the Who and the Faces than with Black Sabbath or Judas Priest. But his songs were filled with soaring choruses and grandiose horn embellishes that proved he could be larger than life both on and off the stage. --Jon Wiederhorn

THIS IS A GREAT 70'S COMPILATION ALBUM FOR THE CURIOUS BEGINNER AS AN INTRODUCTION TO ALICE COOPER........2007-05-08
Before I begin my review, I would like to encourage all of you to read the Blog that Kevin Johns and I have set up for your further Rock n' Roll reading pleasure. It is called "FOREVER IN ROCK, THE JOHN LOPEZ REVIEWS." I deeply hope that all of you will read it and enjoy it. Forever in Rock, John L.
I will be writing a review on the legendary compilation album entitled "ALICE COOPER'S GREATEST HITS" by one of Rock's all-time greatest artists ever. I give you one of America's pride and joy's, ALICE COOPER. "ALICE COOPER'S GREATEST HITS" was originally released in 1974 on Vinyl/LP, 8 Track and Cassette on the Warner Brothers Records label which is a Warner Communications Company. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the overall best informative and most accurate review possible.
Besides BLACK SABBATH, ALICE COOPER will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for being one the original pioneers that dared to combine horror and Rock n' Roll on stage. COOPER'S legendary horrific and scary shows would be known the world over for scaring the daylights out of his fans and putting several of his fans into a semi-coma so severe, that he would have them running for the nearest exit door. What made ALICE COOPER want to be this way? In order to know why, we have to go back to the very beginning.
Before ALICE COOPER came to be, he would be born VINCENT FURNIER in 1947. Story or legend has it that he is the son of a former renowned Evangelist. Please don't quote me, I am not sure if this statement is true. However, I did hear this statement directly from a preacher who did some research on ALICE COOPER. As for how FURNIER changed his name to ALICE COOPER, there are many conflicting stories concerning this subject matter which ALICE himself, has been known to change his stories from time to time.
The first and most foremost of these stories is the story of what happened late one night while the group was visiting Dick Phillips (A.K.A. Dick Christian), their manager at the time. Phillips, a colorful character in his own right, had been urging the group to break out of their run-of-the-mill mold. That very same evening, just for laughs, SO THEY SAY, Phillips' mother pulled out the OUIJA BOARD to do a reading on FURNIER and his group. As soon as it began, the letter indicator began wildly skipping across the board, spelling out the name A-L-I-C-E C-O-O-P-E-R. From that little incident alone, the boys concocted (To invent, to make up something) a tale that would only serve to enhance the ALICE COOPER legend in the years to come: That VINCENT FURNIER was the reincarnation of a young woman of the very same name-a woman who had been burned alive at the stake hundreds of years ago for being a witch!
Despite all of these stories, ALICE COOPER would move on to record many great albums and hit songs in the 1970's to highly critically acclaim. "ALICE COOPER'S GREATEST HITS" from 1974 would be the result of the many hit songs that ALICE COOPER would record in the 1970's. "ALICE COOPER'S GREATEST HITS" would also serve as one of the many contributions, accomplishments and achievements in ALICE COOPER'S career. In my opinion, "ALICE COOPER'S GREATEST HITS" is without a doubt, a true testament of the sheer genius and musical creativity of an extremely talented individual. "ALICE COOPER'S GREATEST HITS" is also a fine fitting tribute to a legendary artist that was truly indeed, far ahead of his time.
It is now time to let the Rock n' Roll music of ALICE COOPER to speak for itself and back it up by doing all of the talking musically. "ALICE COOPER'S GREATEST HITS" from 1974 begins with the forever blistering ALICE COOPER trademark a*s kicking hard Rocker "I'm Eighteen," the hard a*s driving Rocker "Is It My Body," the amazing hard Rocker "Desperado," the incredible hard Rocker "Under My Wheels," the mild hard Rocker "Be My Lover," the forever breathtaking ALICE COOPER trademark hard Rocker "School's Out," the slow hard Rocker "Hello Hooray," the unforgetable hard Rocker "Elected," the forever groundbreaking ALICE COOPER trademark hard Rocker "No More Mr. Nice Guy," the forever in-your-face hard Rocker "Billion Dollar Babies," the forever mellow hard Rocker "Teenage Lament '74" and the fast paced and energetic hard a*s Rocker "Muscle Of Love." May I also add that ALICE COOPER's blistering lead vocals were sizzlin' red hot and burning on fire while laying down the tracks to these hit songs. His frightening lead vocals were definitely taking the music to another level unimagined.
Overall, this is one hell of a compilation album worth checking out and seeking further research and information into especially if you are a hardcore diehard ALICE COOPER fan or a devout music collector. As for all of the curious newcomers and new beginners that are not quite familiar with the sound and music of ALICE COOPER, this greatest hits compilation album is not a bad place to start. However, you might want to research further into another one of the many ALICE COOPER greatest hits compilation albums that contains all of his hit songs all the way up to today instead of just the 1970's alone. With this research, you will be able to make your final decision as to which album(s) is right for your musical needs and tastes. Either way you choose, you will have taken a giant step in owning and starting your very own personal ALICE COOPER music collection. You can do all of your researching and album purchases either on Amazon com or at your nearest local Borders Books and Music store. If you ever get a chance, buy this album. You'll be happy and satisfied that you did.
I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary compilation album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary treasure album has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This is one great priceless gem that no hardcore music fan or devout music collector would want to be without.
In closing, ALICE COOPER has successfully continued in recording many more great albums and hit songs that were still yet to come and has embarked on many new World Tours before sell-out audiences the world over to highly critically acclaim up to this very day. Knowing this, I guess it is safe to say that ALICE COOPER is here to stay and isn't going anywhere anytime soon. There would also be new tales and stories in the ALICE COOPER legend that would still need to be told and written. But that, my fellow readers and reviewers, you will just have to stayed tuned and glued to your computers and read further more about it at a later date in the near future. With this in mind, ALICE COOPER has forever left his place and mark in Rock n' Roll history and will never be forgotten. So here's to you Vincent A.K.A. Alice. Thanks for the many great memories with many more still to come. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have truly enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. ALICE COOPER RULES! Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.
A very good CD, but ..........2007-05-01
This CD would otherwise rate five stars. I own it, I love it, but it just wasn't what it could have been. It's missing at least a second CD, and arguably, a third.
Although Alice Cooper had their hits, including the #1 "School's Out," their great success had a lot more to with their excellent album work, and a stage show like no other in its time. A career based on this type of success leads to Alice Cooper tracks falling into two distinct categories: (a) the hit singles, and (b) the deeper cut tracks helping complete albums which, although did not become US hits, either became hits in other places in the world, or became fan favorites that lived forever.
This CD does well enough covering the hit singles. It falls painfully short on selecting those tracks which helped make their album success as great as it was, as well as tracks that live on in Alice Cooper concerts to this very day.
Purchasing this CD will leave you wishing you purchased the individual albums instead. Therefore, pass on this one, and pick up "Love It To Death," "Killer," "School's Out" and "Billion Dollar Babies" instead. Strongly consider adding "Muscle of Love" as well.
Cool stuff here.......2007-02-11
Okay, I'm not ACG's biggest fan. But there are great songs aplenty here. I always loved I'm 18, for one. School's Out, that song rocks too. Be My Lover, Under My Wheels, Desparado, Elected, No More Mr. Nice Guy, and Billion Dollar Babies are all amazingly good songs too. But my favorite's gotta be I'm 18. A couple missteps: I could've done without Is It My Body, though it's not bad. Hello Hooray's a bit overblown, but still an OK song; Teenage Lament '74 and Muscle of Love could've been pulled. But Cooper's best stuff rocks, and this is far better than the hair-metal it sadly inspired. Get a copy of this CD.
......BUT YOU KNEW THAT WHEN YOU LAID DOWN............2007-01-23
The only problem with this best of set, is that it is too short. This happens to be the problem with most best ofs or greatest hits.
Now, let me tell you something, about my old man. Not a rocker. He's big on Sinatra, and easy listening stuff, church, etc. Not too much rock in his music collection at all. But he does own this disc, Alice Coopers Greatest Hits. One of his favorite albums, and by the way, how I learned of the music from this dude- back from when Alice Cooper was a band (as has been stated in every other review here)
My dad gave me all his records way back, when he first converted to CD's, and this one here instantly became one that stayed on the turntable. Sure theres no deep cuts at all, but whatever. Alice Cooper is one of those bands where you can enjoy the radio hits just as much as the deep cuts... and sometimes the deep cuts are a little too "deep" anyway.. and you just wanna hear the familiar three minute tunes.. like SCHOOLS OUT, NO MORE MR NICE GUY, BILLION DOLLAR BABIES and I'm EIGHTEEN.
This is not extremely long by any means, probably shy of fifty minutes, but every song is rock, not schlock. The longer compilations add later tunes that aren't quite in the same vibe as these early ones. My favorite overall is DESPERADO, and no its not the same as that sucky Eagles song by the same name. This tune has a cool, dark, Iggy and The Stooges type feel, with killer/clown type lyrics.
Point... if you are new to The Coop, or just a casual fan then I can easily recommend you check out this disc.... other studio albums may just blow your head off.
could of and should have been better.......2006-09-03
This was a compilation of Alice Cooper... the band!
The music holds up and shows that despite the visual approach it is nonetheless really good rock and roll music. The only problem with this is that it omits better songs and includes lessor ones.
"Love it to Death" was their best album. This before Vincent Furnier assumed the moniker of the band. "Muscle of love" was their weakest. The band was falling apart.
"Ballad of Dwight Frye", "Caught in a Dream" and "Big Apple Dreamin" should have replaced "Teenage Lament 74", "Muscle of Love" and "Is it my Body".
I wonder if record companies select the greatest hits or fans of the music. I would think that fans of Alice Cooper would concur.
For most fans stemming back 30 years, "Dwight Frye" has always been a favorite.

Why they call it Classic Rock.......2007-01-11
70s GREATEST HITS: HEAVY HITTERS Vol. 2 is a terrific various artist set of rock that spans the years 1968-77, with particular emphasis on the early 70s. Audio quality on all of these classic recordings is superb. The longest track here, "The Court Of The Crimson King," clocks in at 9:26, and is the complete work. "Free Bird," on the other hand, is shortened by a few minutes-- thus the 4 star rating for the CD.
TOTAL RUNNING TIME -- 43:11
