No Security [Live]

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
This is the seventh live Stones album and the second to appear in three years. Now, what do you want to bet the three men who've appeared on every one of them--Mick, Keith, and Charlie--couldn't name them without a cheat sheet? Chances are, they won't remember this one in five years. Culled from the Bridges to Babylon tour, No Security feels more like a tour memento than a stand-on-its-own recording. The 13 tracks are a mix of familiar chestnuts ("Gimme Shelter," "Live with Me," "The Last Time"), welcome restorations ("Sister Morphine," "Memory Motel"), and tertiary Jagger-Richards tunes ("Flip the Switch," "Thief in the Night"). A few recruits are along for the ride: Taj Mahal turns up on the breath catcher "Corinna," Dave Matthews shares vocals with Mick on "Memory Motel," and jazzman Joshua Redman solos on "Waiting on a Friend." They're all, no doubt, quite proud to have joined these legends on stage and CD. But when they want to hear live Stones, it's a good bet even they will reach for Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out before No Security. --Steven Stolder

New Musical Express
Guests Dave Matthews ... and Taj Mahal ... hardly call for a loosening of the corset-strings, and only the indelibly stained "Live With Me" rakes up enough sleaze to flutter the heart.

4 out of 5 stars Rolling Stones - 'No Security' (Virgin) 4 1/2 stars .......2007-03-23

Review no.63. Never even got to check out this live Stones CD until here recently. A nicely assembled fourteen track concert document of the Stone's 'Bridges To Babylon' U.S. trek. There are three cuts here from that modern day Stones classic - "Saint of Me", "Theif In The Night" and the awesome "Out Of Control". Not sure as to WHY many fans claim that the 'Bridges' CD isn't very good. It's fine! Then of course, there are the old stuff that so few rarely grow tired of, like "You Got Me Rocking" (actually, this is a later tune but it's SO good I thought it was an oldie at first), "Gimme Shelter", "Waiting On A Friend", "Sister Morphine" (hadn't heard this cut in ages), "Live With Me" and the unbeatable "The Last Time" (my personal favorite of the entire disc). Sound quality and production here is superb. Simply, a must-have.

5 out of 5 stars The Stones Rule.............................2007-01-12

I have been reading the reviews of this CD and I cant believe them, these guys are what rock and roll is all about....give me a break, if you were at these shows which IM SURE MOST OF THE REVIEWERS WERE, they were wasted like the rest of us were, this tour was awesome....I saw them on this tour and I was blown away...you people need to wake up, The Stones wont be around for much longer, enjoy them while you can, quit being so critical......

3 out of 5 stars Thankfully, no standards.......2006-07-10

I give this a three based on the tight performances and the fact that there are NO versions of "Start Me Up," "Brown Sugar," "Jumping Jack Flash," or "Honky Tonk Women."
The performances here are solid and I enjoy the updated versions of older material. It's also a nice way to re-acquaint yourself with some good "Bridges to Babylon" numbers.
Even if this is little more than a tour souvenir, it's a solid one. Be honest, who really buys these things other than Stones fans? Most likely, the curious are going to be scared off by the omission of the standards, so these things are purely for our ever-growing collections. Is it just more money in their overstuffed coffers? Sure. But if it's done well enough, I'm not going to get bent about it. The Stones are way past the point of arguing about artistic integrity or how rich these guys are. They're an icon, a brand name, and an institution. When they put out good stuff, I'm a happy fan. This is an example.

5 out of 5 stars Questions you should ask yourself before buying:.......2005-10-23

1. Do I like the Rolling Stones?
2. Do I think the Rolling Stones lost it after (fill in the blanks with either "Some Girls" or "Tattoo You.")?
3. Do I think the Rolling Stones are too old to be doing this?
4. Do I like their older, "classic" material, but don't care to hear new versions?
5. Am I afraid that if someone sees this record in my collection, I'll be mocked for buying a "tour souvenir" with no musical merit?

If you answered yes to the first question and no to all the others, then there's no reason why you shouldn't spend your hard earned $15 on this very enjoyable disk.

This one in particular fills a couple of niches for me. I don't automatically dismiss any of their late work--in fact I like most of it, including the new one, "A Bigger Bang." But "Bridges to Babylon" was admittedly pretty weak. Well, this disk gives you a chance to hear the handful of good songs from that the record, and these versions are preferable. In particular, "Out of Control," a lengthy piece with a lot of dynamic changes, comes off great here. Other recent songs like "Saint of Me," "You Got Me Rocking," "Flip the Switch" and "Thief in the Night" come off better here than in their studio incarnations. Of the older material, the versions of "Gimme Shelter," "Memory Motel," "Waiting on a Friend" and "The Last Time," are spectacular.

Reactions to the Stones are rather predictable and annoying. You're supposed to be annoyed with all their post-tour live albums, and see them as "just cashing in." This just isn't true. The live disks are a chance for them to re-address older material in versions that take advantage of their improved musicianship and matured perspective. On "Flashpoint," for example, you can hear fantastic versions of "Paint it Black" and "Ruby Tuesday," played with great passion and inventiveness. "Stripped" has many highlights, including a wonderful version of the very early tunes "I'm Free," and "Spider and the Fly," and a jolly take on "Let it Bleed."

If you want to let late-night comedians and jaded rock reviewers guide your choices, then you probably aren't going to want to risk the "uncool" label they would surely apply to anyone who bought "No Security." But I enjoy it, I play it all the time, and my hat's off to the Stones for risking ridicule by putting it out.

1 out of 5 stars What Again?.......2005-09-12

Their 7th live album recording? How much money do these guys need? At this point when I heard it, redundency was a word that came to mind. Hey Mick, forget the hair plugs and don't bother w/ facelifts. Hang it up and let some new guys make a buck!!
I saw you live in '65 !! Enuf is enuf!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Music.......2000-07-09

As a double-bass player, I must say that these pieces are challenging to play, yet are very fluent. My personal favorite is sonata #3, and all parts thereof. Any serious or aspiring bass and cello player should at least try to pick up the music for these pieces and give it a shot. Needless to say, those who do not play an instrument will find the music engrossing, to say the least. This is a must-buy CD for any fan of classical music.

3 out of 5 stars Another Live Album Proves You Can't Win 'Em All.......2002-10-20

This is an import version with the usual bonus track, this time it's I Just Want To Make Love To You (from way back on the first album). So far, this one has never been released on any single or other album, so this is the only place you can this this track.

No Security was released Nov 3, 1998. It was recorded earlier the same year during the Bridges to Babylon tour and it was the Stones 8th live album. The album was *not* recorded during the No Security tour, which followed in January of 1999. The tracks on the album were actually recorded as follows:
.....the Arena in Amsterdam (most tracks)
.....the River Plate in Buenos Aires (Saint Of Me and Out Of Control)
.....Zeppelinfield in Nuremberg
.....the TWA Dome in St. Louis
.....MTV's "Live From The 10 Spot"

The album features old Stones friend Taj Mahal singing the blues standard Corinna and Dave Mathews singing with Mick on Memory Motel. There are no songs on the album that the Stones had not previously recorded. Some folks claim the CD is worth buying just for Lisa's phenomenal vocals on Gimme Shelter.

Most people know the music, so in my reviews I try to give you data on the sessions and interesting facts connected with the songs and the album. Here we go:

This information comes from "It's Only Rock And Roll: The Ultimate Guide To The Rolling Stones" by Karnbach and Bernson and from my own collection, with some of the notes from Davis' "Old Gods Almost Dead." Both books are available from amazon.com.

5 out of 5 stars BEST STONES RECORDING OUT THERE.......1999-04-29

THIS IS SIMPLY THE BEST STONES RECORDING I'VE HEARD. THE CHOICE OF SONGS IS EXCELLENT AND THE ENERGY AND ATMOSPHERE PUTS YOU RIGHT IN THE FRONT ROW. I NEVER TIRE OF LISTENING TO IT. A MUST FOR STONES FANS.
