      5 out of 5 stars Listen,Learn, & Grow: Playtime.......2007-05-14

The music is excellent, with high quality sound. Not irritating as some classical music can be. Plus the tempo's are varied which is great depending if you need something fast paced or more slow. Best of all, the kids enjoyed it!

How to gently insert a little culture into the grandkids' lives without Mom freaking out.....send this set of CDs for Christmas. Dad's into heavy metal and Mom, although she has a long history of listening to Classical music as a child, is now into Country. Nothing wrong with that, but how are the three little ones going to hear any of the Classics with Grandma living more than 600 miles away? "Play this in the background while they're having creative time," said I, "and see if they don't enjoy it." When I talked with them a week later the 4 year old couldn't wait to tell me how much he liked the "playtime music" I'd sent him. The quality of the recording is good and the variety of rhythms and tempos make it interesting. Yes they're a little trite and you're going to have to explain that the theme to "the Bad News Bears" really is Classical, but that's okay. If they skipped the genius of Mozart as an infant, or even if they teethed to "the Magic Flute", these CDs will give them a taste of a variety of good music and who knows how far into the Classical realm it may send them as they mature?

4 out of 5 stars Journey - A Nice Little EP With A Somewhat New Direction For The Veteran Band.......2007-06-17

"Red 13" was an EP put out by Journey and the second to feature Steve Augeri on lead vocals. Augeri's voice is very similar to former vocalist Steve Perry and he seems to suit the band well. This EP is under 30 minutes long and only contains 4 tracks (plus an "intro), but what is here is really good. The material is rocking and even nod towards progressive rock in spots. Neal Schon is once again front and center with some killer guitar work. The songs are all good to great with "Intro: Red 13 / State Of Grace", and "Walking Away From The Edge" being the best tracks. I don't have either of the albums that proceeded or followed this one, but if this is the direction Journey decides to go in the future I think it is a good one.

      4 out of 5 stars A rocking departure.......2006-07-10

I can see how people, especially longtime Journey fans, could have a problem with the Red 13 EP. It's definitely a step away from Journey's larger than life AOR sound, and it's virtually impossible to imagine Steve Perry agreeing to sing anything other than the ballad "Walkin' Away From the Edge". Then again, maybe that was the point.

The rest of the songs on Red 13 have a more rocking, almost progressive feel, which obviously suits Neal Schon just fine. He really gets a chance to exercise his considerable talent here. Steve Augeri (aka the New Guy), who performed so admirably on Arrival, doesn't really get a chance to shine on this EP. "Walking Away From the Edge" was the only song where his performance was up front and dynamic. The rest of the tracks have him taking a back seat to the rest of the band, who use the opportunity to rock out a bit more than we're used to hearing.

I enjoyed this EP. It was a great showcase for the musicians in Journey, and a statement of what they are capable of when the pressure to write radio-friendly hits is taken away.

It may not be the typical Journey release, but Red 13 is enjoyable for what it is - a rocking, 24-minute, temporary departure from Journey's signature sound.

      2 out of 5 stars Who's Crying Now?.......2006-03-28

I think most of us are. Journey was a really great band, but they seem to have lost their knack for truly great music. Red 13 isn't particularly bad, it's just glaringly mediocre. The only element that lives up to the band's past greatness is Schon's ever stunning musicmanship. That being said, the great songs just aren't there. Don't get me wrong; I'm not pining away at Perry's absence; I think Steve Augeri is a great replacement. It's the songs. Red 13 sounds like a band desperately trying to sound as good as they used to.

1 out of 5 stars Did you people listen to the same CD I did???.......2005-10-20

I know we all love Journey, but c'mon!!! This is utter crap. You can hear the "home studio" feel from the first note of the filler "sounds" that start the album. If this was priced as a CD single, I wouldn't complain. I'd just say "Ok, I think we're ready to go into the studio and actually record an album". Maybe a couple of these tunes might be workable to put on that album. Let's get Kevin Shirley and get some production behind them.

The new Journey Generations album is worth the wait. It's not Frontiers or Escape, but worthy (I think) of the name Journey. They should have named this one "Journeymusic - Red 13".

      5 out of 5 stars Journey RULES!!!!!.......2005-10-15

This is the seconed of the albums with
Steve Augeri, it only has four songs, but it
still is a great album! It's really good!

Everyone complains about Steve perry not being in the band anymore, but who can help that? Steve Augeri is
      A great singer.

I recomend this album to people who like journey and other
Bands, such as 80's groups, bad english, Tall stories and other bands like that. Red 13 is just as good as any other album of there's!!

5 out of 5 stars Best Country Band You've Never Heard.......2003-04-09

Amazingly talented band. Wonderful vocals. The review from the LA Times is very misleading. Scott Young and Smelly are fine traditional country vocalists. The reviewer never mentions the vocal stylings of "Wholesome" Jill Olsen. She has a wonderful voice.

I've seen this band live numerous times since purchasing my first Red Meat album. I now own all their albums. If you ever get a chance to see them when they tour in your area you won't be disappointed. This is country music the way it's meant to be.

I received this as a gift and LOVE IT! It's a must for any music collection. Country music like it used to be. Can't wait for there next release.

        Album Description

Of all Handel's great oratorios, Israel in Egypt is second only to Messiah in drama. It is dominated by massive virtuosic choruses, making it the perfect piece for The Sixteen, acknowledged by audiences and critics alike as "one of the great choirs of our day" (Gramophone).

It's not surprising that Israel in Egypt is much-performed. Hailstones and lightning, buzzing flies and leaping frogs, are all brilliantly evoked for choir and orchestra in a series of incisive choruses leading us excitedly through the plagues of Egypt and the crossing of the Red Sea as we follow Moses and the Children of Israel through the story of the Exodus. The epic nature of the story could not be more suited to Handel's genius for story-telling and drama.

This CD is based on the first published edition (1771), omitting five arias and two short choruses.

Many multi-artist compilations are too stylistically diverse, which makes them sound like poorly conceived mix tapes rather than coherent artistic statements. 13 Ways to Live, a benefit CD for the anti-landmine advocacy group Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation (VVAF), sidesteps the musical diffusion problem by having a dozen different singer-songwriters play with the same group of backing musicians. The band, Austin-based trio Screen Door Music, is very versatile, equally inspired on David Baerwald's haunting waltz "If Wishes Were Horses," Alejandro Escovedo's apocalyptic "Notes on Air," and Patty Griffin's wistful "Dear Old Friend." All of the songs here were composed in reaction to the war in Iraq, although only two explicitly mention the conflict. The songs on 13 Ways to Live are sonically linked by the skillful playing of Screen Door Music, and emotionally linked by the intensity of the singers' performances. --Michael John Simmons

4 out of 5 stars A New Approach to Protest Songs.......2005-01-05

This is a beautiful album. As the editorial review mentions, the fluency of the whole album is harmonically pleasing, and well structured. Not all of the songs hit my fancy - some of them were lyrically or melodically uninteresting to me - but the ones that did - Abra Moore, David Baerwald, Will Sexton & Patty Griffin - struck hard enough to inspire me to pick up my guitar and figure these songs out. Eliza Gilkyson, Richard Buckner, Ian Moore and Bukka Allen also had quite nice contributions. The two best parts of this compilation: [1] the band - Screen Door Music - turned typical folk songs into beautiful compositions - adding an eerie plucking of the inside of the piano over straight chords, a droning harmonium in the back of a simple 1 -4 -5, or layering several guitars, a cello, upright bass and a resonator, they make these songs beautiful and fluent, sometimes rocking intently. [2] the songs approach aspects of war that are often overlooked by protest songs - most notably hopelessness, and the loss of small things. This music humanizes war - and made me feel connected to the perpetrators and the victims of the un-changing cycle of violence. I would kiss all of these artists in thanks if they were round here.

        4 out of 5 stars It's about time.......2004-11-16

That artists used their talents for good again. We all remember Live-Aid, and some are old enough to remember No Nukes. Here the cause is Viet-Nam Veterans Against the War. Is this political, yes, but more than that it's human. From Abra Moore's opening, thru a standout David Baerwald tune, thru Terry Allen's Big Ole White Boys, it's not so much about the politics, as it is about people. Some broken, some misguided, but still just people.

5 out of 5 stars Good songs, great cause.......2004-10-12

I saw Ian Moore at Schuba's in Chicago this past Saturday and he performed his song from this album (The Things We Carried). Let me just say that if you haven't checked out Ian Moore's music yet, do yourself a favor and listen to his latest album, Luminaria. It's amazing. Secondly, his song on this album as well as the work of the other artists on the album is full of emotion, energy, and relevence. In a time of present political uncertainty, perhaps similar to some of the depth of emotion found around Vietnam, this album serves as a barometer of what many of us are thinking and feeling. It is not a campaign piece by any stretch, however. It is just fantastic music compiled into a poetic album that is listenable and beautiful. Again, my hat is off particularly to the underrated Ian Moore whose song alone is worthy of the purchase of this album.

This cd is a wonderful work of art that uses the natural sounding classical guitar to portay many beautiful landscapes. From quiet meadows to a holiday celebration, Steve Suvada depicts a wide range of Richard Pick's most beautiful songs. As a student of Steve Suvada, I can tell you that this cd is a small taste of his incredible talent as a very creative and devoted guitarist. You will surely be amazed by his ability to carry on the wonderful music of Richard Pick.

5 out of 5 stars Finest American Composer for Classical Guitar.......2004-06-27

Richard Pick's music is some of the finest I've ever heard written for the classical guitar. He is truly one of the most underrated voices of his generation, and is wonderfully American and Naturalist in his themes. I hope people will listen to this wonderful performance by Mr. Suvada and thank him for perpetuating the music of this inspiring American composer...Richard Pick. It is obvious to the listener that he worked closely with Richard Pick in the production of this recording, so as to come up with the definitive interpretation of Pick's work. The two men made a marvelous team in the production of this beautiful record. Thank you for this gem of American Classical guitar music!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Quiet Cove,.......2003-12-17

Steve Suvada is the perfect player for this music. Richard Pick's music touches the soul, and can make you forget about any problems of the world that may be in your way. If you are looking for some beautiful music to chill out and relax with, this is a great Cd. If you are a guitarist and not familiar with Pick's music, then you should look into it.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars The Mastersinger.......2000-06-24

If the second half of the 20th Century has musical signs, they must include that phenomenal German singer Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau who dominated the recital and concert halls, the opera stages and the recording studios in a way no other artist has done it, except maybe Leonard Bernstein. In celebration of this great artist's 75th birthday we have here a set which includes the gems of his lieder repertoire, starting with those great Schubert cycles in their most vivid performances. Just listen to those early renditions of the Schone Mullerin or with Jorg Demus, or to Schuman's Dichterliebe cycle (with the same pianist). And you shall not miss the artistry of this most sensitive voice in full volume of Mahler lieder with piano and orchestral songs. And what about the Morike lieder by Hugo Wolf? Well, you shall probably wonder at that special cooperation between the singer and the Russian pianist Svitoslav Richter. It is a performance of lifetime, and so it is with the Wintereise of Schubert with Barnboim at the piano. Those who know the artistry of Fischer-Dieskau and even those who have already other recordings of those great works will not regret having this special set. For the newcomers to this great artist there will be a lot to discover, The music itself, sure, but mainly the art of interpratation. In this alone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau shine high and above all other singers.
