Greatest-hits collections often deprive the listener of the chance to experience an artist's true scope of talent. Not so with Steve Miller--his strength has always been more in crafting an occasional blast of FM-radio heaven rather than a dozen solid album tracks. Greatest Hits 1974-78 chronicles the best singles from Miller's most successful years, after he veered from Haight-Ashbury bluesy trippiness to more accessible blues-based pop-rock. There are the slippery grooves of "The Joker" and "Fly Like an Eagle," and there's the air-guitar-beckoning riff rock of "Take the Money and Run," "Jungle Love," "Rock n'Me," and "Jet Airliner." Don't expect groundbreaking art, expect references to the "pompatus of love" and instant gratification. Requisite listening at the classic-rock keg party. --Neal Weiss

5 out of 5 stars Miller Time!.......2007-07-17

This Steve Miller album gets 5 stars largely on its strength as a compilation. All of the Steve Miller hits you know from the radio are on this disc. It's all you need for an overview of Steve Miller and for slapping in the CD player when you're at a party and want some 70s rock on. This stuff is good, simple, rock music. Steve's vocals are well-backed by the guitars. Very solid album.

5 out of 5 stars Dollars and (common) cents........2007-06-21

I'm going to rate this CD based on a $1 per song cost to total cost for the entire CD (Apple and Rhapsody charge $1 per song).
This is a rather fine example of what a greatest hits CD should be. A bunch of really good songs with not much in the way of "filler".
Tracks 1,2,3,4,8,9 & 11 are the popular classics you'll know from the radio. (Tracks 6,12 & 13 aren't that popular, but they grow on you). So you get $7 worth of essential tracks for the current Amazon price of $8. Not bad. (You can get each of these songs individually from iTunes and save yourself $1). Two other good songs from Steve Miller, that fall outside the 1974-1978 range, are "Abracadabra" and "Living in the USA". Don't go and pay $14 for the "Young Hearts" greatest hits CD just to get these two additional songs. I'd buy each of them on iTunes for $1, if available.
Hope this helps.

5 out of 5 stars Fly like an Eagle, let you spirit set you free........2007-06-10

A wonderful CD of some of Mr. Miller's best tunes. This is a staple for those times when you want to kick back and relax, and just fade into your memories. Super tunes.

5 out of 5 stars TAKES ME BACK.......2007-05-14

I LOVE IT. I LISTEN AT HOME OR IN THE CAR . IT HAS ALL OF THEIR GREAT SONGS AND IT IS SO MUCH FUN.

4 out of 5 stars Good but Outdated Compilation.......2007-03-12

The Steve Miller Band produced some remarkable pop rock songs in the 1970s. They were sticky, short and sweet tracks that bore the mark of ingenuity and economy. They didn't take up a lot of your time, but they songs stayed in your mind for a long, long time. Indeed, many of these are FM staples down to this day. This 1978 collection is filled with the gems of their mid-70s work. How do the songs rate?

Swingtown- It begins with a fade-in. The bassline we hear becomes the backbone of the song. Harmonies fill the song, as do catchy melodies. An excellent way to kick off the compilation.

Jungle Love- A classic. Just thinking about "Jungle Love" is driving me crazy.

Take the Money and Run- A short little gem that's one my favourite SMB tracks. The off-kilter drum intro is great, as is the zany guitar work. The lyrics themselves tell the story of a robbing couple and the sheriff who's out to get them. Goofy fun all around.

Rock 'N Me- "Keep on 'a rockin' me baby" says it all. Memorable guitar riff, too.

Serenade- Not the best song, but good by most standards.

True Fine Love- Cute ballad with a nice little swing to it.

The Stake- A slow-burning pop classic.

The Joker- This is from 1973, so its inclusion is dubious. But guess what? The song is one of SMB's most enduring and pivotal tracks. If "Maurice" followed by a guitar-made whistling-like sound doesn't ring a bell, there's something wrong with you.

Fly Like an Eagle- A mellow paean to freedom embossed in some fine electronic atomospherics. One SMB's other key songs.

Threshold- Not really a song at all. It's an intro to...

Jet Airliner- Pop rock about being a celebrity. Great chorus.

Dance, Dance, Dance- More country than anything else. Good thing they stuck it at the end, because I always skip this cold fish.

Winter Time- Doesn't do anything for me.

Wild Mountain Honey- Dull.

Now, as you might've noted, a great many of these tracks garnered quite a bit of praise from me. That's because the music itself is quite awesome. However, this set does have some weaknesses:

*Nothing (aside from "The Joker") outside the 74-78 range. That means you don't get any of SMB's early classics or the early 80s cheesball "Abracadabra" track.

*Original issue CD, which means the sound quality is rather low.

*Not a lot of songs. Given that this compilation was originally released on an LP, we can understand why we don't get that much music.

*Better compilations are out there. "Young Hearts" offers more songs than this, and the sound is better. BUT,if you're looking for a concise overview of hits, you might be interested in this one. If you down mind less tracks and low audio quality, this compilation will work for you. It'll probably cost you less, too.

Overall, this compilation was great for its time. But in this day and age, it seems rather outdated. Fantastic tunes, though!

4 out of 5 stars Almost 5 Stars.......2007-04-25

This is quite a good Steve Miller compilation and there are certainly more good points to it, than bad. The good points are: it has great sound, all of the song selections are pretty well chosen, over all it is a good representation of Steve Miller. The one thing that I consider to be a bad point, is that there was a song not included, that I think should have been, as you can't find it on many SM compilations, in fact, at this time, the only compilation that you can find it on is out of print. It is also on the original album. The song is "Keeps Me Wondering Why" and I find it very frustrating that they have omitted that song more times than not, like I say, it's on an out of print compilation, although you can buy it's original album, "Abracadabra", which I think is a little superfluous, considering that it needs to be on all SM compilations, this one, especially. I loved that song, I would certainly consider it a hit. Other than that, though this is a pretty well-done compilation that most SM fans should enjoy, especially the casual fan.

4 out of 5 stars great music........2006-12-26

i like this compilation very good. i really like the intros to the songs fly like an eagle and jet airliner i think they start out with cool effects. jet airliner is one of the few songs i cant get enough of because that intro rocks!!! take the money and run and rocking me are great songs which those 2 ive been listening to for several years. however the joker is an really awful song, ooh man i hate that song it makes me cry. but i like this compilation and i will recommend this to any rock fan. recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Some great songs........2006-12-20

I really liked this. I couldnt get enough of the intros to Fly Like An Eagle, and Jet Airliner. Steve Miller was a great guitar player and he can equally sing. Take The Money And Run was one of my very first songs and I've listened to that for over 5 years as well as Rockin Me. The Joker in my opinion is a terrible song and sux. This is really good and I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Shubada Du Ma Ma .......2006-10-25

This classic album covers 35 years of music from one of the best musicians out there. Stever Miller made some of the best music over the years and this has pretty much everything you could want. This is the best Steve Miller collection out there. I saw Steve Miller at Moondance Jam and it is 2006 and he still puts on an outstanding show. Steve Miller is the man. 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Enhance your SMB collection.......2007-03-04

Not only is this Australian collection an excellent overview of the Steve Miller Band's 30-year career, but it features five essential tracks that are not found on the American release "Complete Greatest Hits":
Give It Up
Keeps Me Wondering Why
Heart Like A Wheel
True Fine Love
Winter Time

4 out of 5 stars An Aussie collection of hits, far better than the American version.......2006-10-26

I have both the "Greatest Hits 1974-1978", and also this Australian edition. This second one is by far, much better than the US. Spend some extra bucks and get a good collection of Steve Miller Hits, including the beautiful "Wide River" and "Heart Like A Wheel".

3 out of 5 stars ... but it doesn't have "Space Cowboy".......2003-08-09

This doesn't have Space Cowboy (not "The Joker" which mentions the same phrase). This is a hit song of theirs which any compilation should have. I suggest getting the 2 domestic greatest hits albums (68-73 & 74-78) instead.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal Recordings From Group's Best Received Era.......2003-04-27

For a track gathering focussed solely on the group's better well-known hits, this CD is their ultimate. It has all but one song (Threshold) from Greatest Hits 1974-1978 plus six more including Wide River, Heart Like A Wheel, Abracadabra and others. Would've liked had Cool Magic also been listed but I guess you can only pull so many prime cuts out of a storage case. As an Import you pay the extra dollar but nothing you'd regret when friends visit and give you credit for the quality of music you have playing. If you still take an interest in Miller's earlier career years, considering the Anthology compilation also probably remains your best bet. However, for the still discerning fan this collection offers most b/Band hits one could ever want.

4 out of 5 stars The perfect Steve Miller-compilation.......2003-04-19

Most people got to know Steve Miller through his smash hit "The Joker", a laid-back, good-natured boast with sparse instrumentation and a memorable melody.
"The Joker" hit #1 thirty years ago this year (and Steve Miller will celebrate his 60th birthday in October, by the way), and most of the songs on this album are from the seventies as well.

All his best-known songs are here, including "Rock n' Me", "Jet Airline", "Take The Money And Run", "Give It Up" and "Abracadabra" (some people really, really loathe that song. I kinda like it, although I can see why not everyone shares my view).
"Greatest Hits" will satisfy everyone but the most dedicated, and it's the perfect album for the casual fan, or for the newcomer who wants to sample Miller's best work. It's a hits-compilation that actually delivers.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars His Best Best-Of!.......2002-08-24

This album kicks all other SM compilations (including the ultra-popular standard issue "Greatest Hits 1974-1978") for several reasons:

It includes ALL of the songs from the original GH7478 album.

It includes the FULL version of "Abracadabra" with the cool instrumental part at the end, and not the chopped up single version, as was done on 1992's "The Very Best of the Steve Miller Band".

It includes the familiar version of "The Joker" and not some lame remix, as was done on TVBOTSMB.

Besides "Abracadabra", it includes five other post-'78 songs, including the lost single "Heart Like A Wheel" and his last semi-popular FM hit, "Wide River", from 1993.

It does NOT include "Macho City" in ANY form.

Complaints: It doesn't have notable 80's singles "Cool Magic" and "I Want To Make The World Turn Around". Small complaints, nonetheless. This is the best introduction to all things Steve Miller.
