Alive in America [Live]

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
The eagerly awaited return of the Becker/Fagan axis was widely viewed as an anticlimax in concert, and the same faults that dogged these 1993/94 tour dates--predictable repertoire, play-it-safe arrangements--are reprised here. It's fine as a tour memento, but these dozen classics sound tired and lackluster next to their still-potent studio counterparts. Nice choice, though, as an Christmas present for the pony-tailed dad on junior's shopping list. --Jeff Bateman

I am a huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith. They did a great job preserving his vision. I can listen to this collection for hours. Great music!

5 out of 5 stars Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03

This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?

4 out of 5 stars Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11

Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.

Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).

Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".

It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.

But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.

4 out of 5 stars Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22

It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!

4 out of 5 stars Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31

Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.

However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.

However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.

Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

4 out of 5 stars The Dan don't do covers.......2007-06-27

Although surprises are few, this is an interesting album not only for Dan fans, but for beginners as well. The band is really good, and Donald Fagen's vocals are excellent. Walter Becker? Well, you can actually hear him singing on one song, Book of liars from his solo album. Not bad.

So, what's the deal with Alive in America? Well, like any live album, it's kind of a greatest hits collection. But this time without quite a few of the expected ones. Among omitted songs are Do it again, Rikki don't lose that number and Doctor Wu, which for many fans rank among the top ten Steely Dan songs. These omissions pave the way for less salient songs to shine, such as Sign in stranger and the magical version of Third world man. It's done somewhat slower than on Gaucho, and Fagen's vocals are more intense.

in general, though, the songs sound much like the original studio versions. The three concluding albums from the original Dan run dominate, with two songs from Gaucho, three from Aja, and three from The royal scam. These are the most conceptual, held-together albums, and possibly the ones Fagen and Becker are the most satisfied with. So Alive in America could be seen as their own choice of great Steely Dan songs, which differs in several ways from collections like Gold or A decade. This makes the album well worth owning, not only for long-time fans, but definitely for newcomers too.

4 out of 5 stars BIGDANFAN.......2007-06-11

Read the reviews some not so great. They were wrong. Great album. The guitar solo on Peg one of the best.I think even better than Larry Carlton on Kid Charlemane from the Royal Scam album. Also usually not a big drum fan but the drums on the album really nice.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-05-10

This CD captures the skill and talent of Steely Dan and the band members in their mastery of their instruments. Very entertaining to listen to and compare with their studio works. The only reason I gave it a 4 star is not enough songs. They could have added more since it was a compilation of their live performance over a period of time.

4 out of 5 stars What a Find!.......2007-04-13

I was looking around in a used music shop for some Donald Fagan albums a couple of months ago when I happened upon this little gem. Being a devoted Steely Dan fan, I decided to give it a try, and boy am I glad I did. I've now listened to it a number of times and it just gets better every time I hear it. That cool, jazzy sound that is inevitably Steely Dan is wonderfully accomodating for a live album such as this, with subtle variations on old favorites like "Reelin' In The Years", and a delightfully spontaneous drum solo in "Josie". Steely Dan generates a cool energy for this live album, and Walter Becker proves that Fagen is not the only one who can tear the roof off the sucker in his vocal performance of "Book Of Liars", my personal favorite.
This album is not just for the hardcore Steely Dan listeners. I would recomend it to anyone brand new to the funky, arcanic world of Steely Dan. And for those who already own every album, well, you can never have too much Steely Dan. A welcome new addition to any collection

4 out of 5 stars Just As They Predicted...........2007-04-06

Having listened to the music of Steely Dan for some 30-plus years since their first commercial releases back in the early 1970's; I found the numerous reviews of the "Alive In America" CD most interesting as fans express their reactions(both 'pro' and 'con')to live versions of some of the songs presented during their 'reunion' tour that began in 1993 and extended into 1994. I never had the opportunity to meet up with them during my years of working in the music industry; but having listened to and read numerous interviews they've acquiesced to over the years; I found their personal observations from one particular magazine interview that 'previewed' that 1993/94 reunion tour most fascinating and quite insightful; especially in comparison with reviews of this post-tour CD which documents some of the 'highlights' of their first live outing in almost 19 years. Although Steely Dan began as an actual band built around the musical compositions of Walter Becker & Donald Fagen; it wasn't until they became fed up with the grind of live touring and performing that they finally settled into their most creative musical period and produced what critics(and fans)consider the pinnacle of their work. Before they decided to once again take their show 'on the road' the obvious questions were put to them: 1)Why tour now after so long a lapse? Their true answer: Because live touring finally had become sophisticated enough so as to actually make it enjoyable instead of a torturous ordeal. 2)Is this really a reunion of sorts? The answer: Not really. The tour was conceived to coincide with Donald Fagen's second solo album 'Kamakiriad'; produced by Becker and released early in 1993. But manager Irv Azoff convinced them it could be promoted a lot better as 'An Evening With Steely Dan'. 3)Who were the players going to be(since Steely Dan pretty much ceased to be a band after the 'Pretzel Logic' release)? Their answer: Basically; who was available - that we could get, on such short notice(Dennis Chambers was one of their first considerations for the drummer's chair at the outset but he was already committed that year to a Brecker Brothers tour if I remember correctly - they were able to get him in '94). But Peter Erskine's name came up and it just so happened that he wasn't already booked with anyone for that year. Plus Warren Bernhardt(piano/keys)had worked with Erskine in Steps Ahead so they were already tight musically. And they had Drew Zingg from the NYR&S Review; who pulled off an amazing feat - recreating the sound and 'feel' of Larry Carlton & Steve Khan's studio work on the live stage! Then, for me; the crowning touch was Bill Ware on vibes and percussion; adding the 'spice' they got from the late Victor Feldman in the studio! So that '93 tour group was without a doubt the best of all the packages they were able to assemble through the years. I saw their live shows - in '93(along with my wife); with my brother in '94; plus the '96, '98, 2000 & 2006 shows that featured different lineups of players(I made crib notes on each gig). I also was handed a bootleg of one of the tour nights from 1993 that has nearly the entire show on it(boy, what a deal,eh?)! As far as the selections that went on the final CD; it essentially came down to their favorite choices from everything that was available to pick from. I was told by a buddy of mine who knew one of the road crew members that Roger Nichols recorded virtually every night and that the musical arrangements for certain songs were actually modified as the tour continued. So, they were progressively tightening things up musically, as they went along. On some of the earliest dates; particularly with the '93 tour there were some serious flubs by Fagen and Becker as well as other players(you'll hear them on the bootlegs)and that's the reason why certain tunes didn't make it to the final CD. The live version of 'Aja' that closes the 'album' out was taken from the second night of two dates they played at Irvine, California in 1994 - the show my brother and I attended together(we're unofficially on the 'record'- in the 'applause' during the turnaround section - screaming - before they go back to the 'top' of the arrangement)! But actually, they opened that show(surprising almost everyone)performing 'Aja' right after the warmup instrumental overture, which contained snippetts from "Here At The Western World"(which I thought was kind of appropos for the Cali shows)! The previous night though; I was told; they did close with 'Aja' - but they sounded a little 'flat'. So they likely chose to move it up to the front on the next night - while they were fresh. And my brother and I both agreed - they were 'on' it that night! Given their penchant for perfection in times past - should we have expected anything different here? And as far as fans reactions to their live presentations of their past works - they fully anticipated that there might be some backlash since those studio concoctions are so highly revered and treasured among 'Danheads'. But they felt no real constraint to have to live up to anyones' preconceived notions in their concerts - especially since most of their repertoire had never been performed live anyway prior to that time. So they resolved to take it all in stride and I'm fairly certain they managed to enjoy themselves in the process and to continue laughing together 'all the way to the bank!' And that's "Steely Dan" - you gotta love 'em!!!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars STARCASTLE: Live At Last.......2000-09-04

I never had the pleasure of seeing this band live. What a treat to finally have a quality recorded concert CD. It's really amazing to hear them reproduce their complex, highly produced songs almost to perfection in a live setting. Particular praise most go to their flawless rendition of "Lady of the Lake" and the total treat of hearing a previously unreleased track "Breath and Thunder". Terry Luttrell sings suprisingly well on stage. Gary Strater's bass playing is excellent as always. The whole group cooks. And I'm sure this wasn't the best show they ever did. My enthusiasm at having something "new" from Starcastle moves me to give the 5 Stars. I'd downgrade this to a 4 on the basis of poor packaging. There are only short liner notes that are somewhat reserved in their praise of the band. There are no details given of where and when the show was recorded. There are no new photos of the band or what was (by all accounts) their spectacular stageshow. Other than that, this is a definite MUST for every true blue Starcastle fan.

3 out of 5 stars An Interesting Discovery.......2000-07-27

As a Yes fan, I try to keep my eyes'n'ears open to discoverbands influenced by Yes. Mostly, the result is disappointing - onceyou find bands like this, something is missing. But Starcastle comes closer. It's more rocking and also more electronic (1970's synths) than Yes, and what's probably the most important thing is that Terry Lutrell has a very light voice like Jon Anderson, though not as skilled and bright as Jon Anderson's. »Concert Classics - Volume 5« is a pretty good album. The highlights are »Can't Think Twice« and »Lady Of The Lake«. The reason why I "only" rate the album to 3 stars is that I can't help comparing Starcastle to Yes, and they do not reach the unique level of Yes!

4 out of 5 stars Great performance, ok song selection........2000-04-26

I have seen this band perform 4 times and can attest that their shows were HOT! The power of their live show can be felt on some of these songs but others lack energy. There are only 2 songs from the first album and 1 from the second, while 4 songs come from Citadel (3rd release). By this time the band started to abandon some of the musical adventurism for a more "pop" sound, probably the result of bad advise from record execs. Still this CD is well worth the price as some of the material burns, with the bass leading the charge. Twin guitar leads not unlike Wishbone Ash and Yes-like harmony vocals fill out the sound.

5 out of 5 stars Live albums show the heart of a band.......1999-08-02

When I listened to this Starcastle CD I was not sure what I would find and was elated to discover that this band is better live than in the studio. While the studio CDs are excellent, the live CD shows the real heart and soul of the band

2 out of 5 stars Not an official release.......2007-03-25

This is not an official Blue Oyster Cult release. It is a copy of a radio show broadcast in 1981. While it is an excellent performance by the band, I suggest you avoid it. The songs don't even end, they fade out. It is not produced by Donald Roeser and Eric Bloom, as the packaging claims, and the band and song copywrite holders are making no money from its sale. Amazon should not be offering it.

For great BOC live performances, see Some Enchanted Evening, recently remastered with bonus tracks and a live DVD, or BOC's other live CDs such as On Your Feet or On Your Knees or the Long Day's Night CD and excellent DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Concert Classics review.......2003-11-11

I guess I must be one of the rare people who enjoys PPL with and without Vince Gill. If your looking for some rare Vince this cd is excellent and the music is very influenced by Vince's style. The sound is near studio quality. Much of the show comes from the Can't hold back LP. I have another radio broadcast of them from the same period. The setlist is better and they close with Freeborn man. Too bad the sound quailty is so poor.

This album didn't get close to the real League,If you want a live album Live Takin The Stage is it. I would run not walk to buy it if they would re-issue it.

2 out of 5 stars pure prairie league concert classics vol. 1.......2001-01-11

out of all the music i have (300 cd's) pure prarie league is one of my favorites. but out of all their albums there is no doubt that "live takin'the stage" is their best work. it is the only live album that i'll listen to. put concert classics vol. 1 back on the shelf and pull "live takin'the stage" back off the shelf and reissue that one, please!

1 out of 5 stars I agree with the music fan from New York.......2000-11-19

This CD was a very bad offering. It was nothing like the live album Takin' the Stage. The only decent song was Two Lane Highway.

3 out of 5 stars Love GG, but audio is terrible on this one..........2004-04-03

I don't have the greatest stereo in my car to begin with, but I can't listen to this album at all in my car. The audio is terrible. For GG fans and collectors that would like to just sit down and listen to it, go ahead and buy it. There's some really cool stuff on this one... especially on the live audio and some freestyle stuff he does at the end.

To sum it up: Collectors go ahead and buy it. Just don't plan on jamming to it because the audio sucks.

3 out of 5 stars Great Songs / Nearly Unbearable Quality.......2002-05-06

Okay, this recording has some of the greatest songs GG Allin has EVER recorded. The trouble is, the music sounds like its been put through a meat grinder. No real GG Allin fan expects good sound quality ripping through the speakers along with GG's toothless growl, but its nice when you can actually HEAR the music. It's just intolerable. Or maybe I just got spoiled listening to Hated in the Nation 700 times in a row first.By the way, Hated in the Nation is probably the best GG Album you can get, next to... Drunks and Junkies, followed closely by Brutality and Bloodshed for all. Hated in the Nation, FFD and J, and B and B for all are MUST HAVE'S for ANY GG fan, or anyone who can laugh at the sick, depraved, disgusting and violent. Also recommended to parents of Goth children. At least you're kids haven't found GG yet!!!

5 out of 5 stars gg at his best or worst which would be his best, but............2000-02-02

to me, this, along with "antisocial personality disorder-live" and "brutality and bloodshed for all", is essential gg allin...i am not a big fan of his ealier stuff..there is something missing from that. it may just be the fact that he sounds like he should be singing for bad religion on a lot of that stuff, or it may be the music itself...i don't know...but here and on the ones that i mentioned earlier, you get the animal...

never before, and possibly, never again will a person be able to put all of his anger and frustration into the form of a voice...there are times when he hardly seems human(which may be because he was too trashed to remember the words and simply growls along, who knows with gg)...

if you are on this page then you are either a fan or, at least, have heard the stories and legends...if you fall into the latter category, grab this album and find out what all of the fuss is about...if it is too raw for you, that is ok, it will be for most...but,on the off chance, that it strikes a chord with you....look into more of his stuff...

5 out of 5 stars The best introduction to the great G.G Allin!.......1998-09-24

The first twelve cuts on this CD comprise the '93 Fastlane show from Asbury Park, NJ, and is, without a doubt, one of G.G.'s best efforts. Certainly it is his most emotional. Here, he not only thanks his band for sticking with him while he was incarcerated up in Michigan, he even tells the audience that they were "cool" for coming out to see him! That's a first and only.

Obviously the Murder Junkies, G.G.'s last and best band, spent a lot of time practicing, for I've never heard them play better. This recording also contains one of G.G.'s great speeches, touching on the Lolapalooza Tour and related matters.

As for the music, well, if you've never heard G.G. Allin, this is the CD to start with. Extreme versions of "Bite It You Scum" and eleven other tunes that put everybody to shame, from Metallica and those lame poser metalheads, all the way through soft rock, punk rock, folk rock, and any other kind of music you can think of.

This CD proves the obvious once again: two and two is four, water is wet, and G.G. is the only true rock 'n' roller.
