Product Description
After The James Gang and before Rocky Mountain Way, Joe Walsh moved to Colorado and formed a short-lived group called Barnstorm with bassist Kenny Passarelli and drummer Joe Vitale. The result is this remarkable and intriguing 1972 album most often referred to as Walshs debut solo effort. What it truly is, though, is a richly textured acoustic/electric album that ebbs and flows with sounds and segues ranging from spooky to sweet, plaintive to psychedelic, from melodically enticing to ballbusting organ-guitar crunch rock. Its less than 40 minutes in length, but by its end the listener feels like he/she has been taken on a musical adventure of the best kind.
The album didnt produce any hits per se, but charted in the Top 100, gave the world the first version of Turn To Stone, and resulted in a uniquely barnstorming national tour, wherein Joe Walsh reconfirmed if there ever was any doubt - his stature as a premiere musician.
Joe Walsh next hit with Rocky Mountain Way and in 1975 added his unique energy to The Eagles, but this landmark early album is as good as anything the rocker did before or since.

"Creative" editing ruins this CD.......2006-05-16
This is one of my favorite records, and I've been trying for years to get it on CD. I have the original vinyl, but those Dunhill pressings were never much good. So, I was very happy to see that the record was reissued on CD. Unfortunately, there's some tape hiss, but most distressing, track 3, "One and One" has been edited to fade out with a long pause between it and the next tune "Giant Bohemoth". On the original vinyl, these two tunes seque into each with no fadeout of any kind. The edit on the reissue totally disrupts the "flow" of the album. Very, very disappointing.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE******************
Apparently this reissue was initially released using a set of incorrectly marked master tapes. The reissuing company has now found the correct masters, have cut a new digital remaster and is now circulating the corrected issue of this record.
Absolutely terrible sound quality!.......2006-04-15
I'm not sure which edition Wayne Klein is referring to in his review but it certainly wasn't this one. As noted by another reviewer, Hip-O Select completely dropped the ball on this one, using the wrong master tapes to produce this CD. It is LOADED with tape hiss, so much so that I could not get through the entire disc before turning it off. I have been in touch with Hip-O's parent company (Universal) and they acknowledged the mistake, saying that a vastly improved edition with the correct master tapes will soon be in stores, but after nearly a year it has yet to appear and when it does the consumer may not be able to distinguish between the two editions. It's hard to understand a mistake like this not being caught before production. But it's worse that a company would allow unsuspecting consumers to buy this garbage and then not rectify the matter after all this time. Great music, bad business practice. I'm keeping my vinyl!
Classic Walsh album finally available on CD again.......2006-03-13
Atmospheric and fascinating Joe Walsh's Barnstorm (aptly named)brought forth this terrific album after Walsh left the James Gang. Everything from the inspired opener "Here We Go" to the unusual "Birdcall Morning". From the instrumental "Giant Bohemoth" which slides right into the stunning "Mother Says" the album doesn't miss a beat.
The biggest song here "Turn to Stone" would show up again in a slightly inferior version on "So What?" but the original primordial monster is here. Featuring crunchy a guitar lick and a stunning guitar solo Walsh never got this experimental again. The album closes out with the acoustic guitar/haronica driven "Comin' Down" which provides a tranquil close to a magical album.
Like the 2005 Japanese re-release the magical sound qualty of the original recording has been retained. This is, in fact, the best the album has ever sounded (although honestly I can't compare it to the original Mobile Fidelity release since I never had it but have had the other import versions). Walsh never got better as a songwriter than here (although he came close with another couple of strong albums such as "The Smoker You Drink, the Player You Get"). A marvelous reissue, this classic album only lacks bonus tracks and outtakes which would have made this classy package complete.

Yikes! This Geffen edition from Japan utilizes the same horrible master as the one Hip-O Select issued last year in which they managed to use the wrong tapes to produce the CD. 4 1/2 Stars: His First & Best Solo.......2005-01-20
Barnstorm, Joe Walsh's first solo album after leaving the James Gang, garnered him fame not only as a guitarist but also as a songwriter. While it's true that Walsh established himself as a late-'60s/early-'70s guitar hero on the Gang's more boogie-oriented rock numbers, it's Walsh's love of lushly textured production and spacy, open-ended songs featuring both acoustic and electric guitars that is showcased here on this wildly adventurous and forgotten unqualified masterpiece. Recorded at the Caribou Ranch in Nederland, CO, Barnstorm reflects the big sky and wide open spaces. Accompanied by bassist Kenny Passarelli and drummer Joe Vitale, Walsh freely indulges himself with fat guitars and keyboards, beautiful choruses, country tinges, and pastoral pop hooks, as evidenced by the glorious opener, "Here We Go." This segues, via the sound of a spooky lonesome wind, into the hauntingly beautiful psychedelic country tune "Midnight Visitor," with elegantly woven acoustic guitars, fat carnival organ sounds, and - of course - the sound of the wind before it slips out the back door. And so it goes with the nearly Baroque psychedelic suite of "One and One," which slides seamlessly into "Giant Bohemoth" (sic) and the rollicking "Mother Says." Everywhere on the album's front half, reverie and American mythological archetypes and history weave together, displacing the listener from the here and now. The openly pastoral country-tinged rock of the album's second half signifies Walsh's considerable gifts as a songwriter who uses his guitar as a dreamy, mercurial narrative device, as signified by the masterpiece "Birdcall Morning" - one of the greatest rock & roll love songs of the early '70s. It is actually mirrored by the sadness and organic bluesy quality of "Home" and the unabashed pop/rock romanticism of "I'll Tell the World," complete with glorious four-part backing harmonies and a crunching guitar crescendo. Speaking of crunch, Barnstorm was also the first place that Walsh's classic "Turn to Stone" nugget ever appeared. In its original version, its guitars have far more edge, sinew, and raw power than on its subsequent re-recording. Rather than let it end there, Walsh tips the scales one more time back to the mysterious in the acoustic guitar and harmonica moment "Comin' Down." It's another love song, which evokes the notion of the past as a way of creating a hopeful present. And it just whispers to a close, leaving the listener literally stunned at what has just transpired in the space of 35 minutes. - Thom Jurek, AMG

His masterpiece. Period........2006-10-15
The joy of spirit on this album is stunning and infectious. Unfortunately in another kingdom; long , long ago.
Most ignored, neglected wondrous 70's album..full of heart & magic .......2006-08-07
One realizes they didn't quite realize the depth of Joe Walsh's broad MUSICALITY & thoughtful arranging talent until after they are lucky enough to hear this lush, gorgeous Colorado Rockies "mystery tour", recorded at the late, great Caribou Ranch Studios in the pre-jaded early 70's.
Until this thoughtful, virtuoso, achingly hearfelt album of music gets its long-overdue justice with a new CD release for ALL the mass of unknowing ears to be BLOWN AWAY by, the legacy of Walsh's true artistry is not represented in all its deserved stature.... except to all but his loyal, longtime fans who know 'Barnstorm' on vinyl, or have coughed-up the ransom for a Japanese import CD of it.
Think ya know Joe? Oh, the guitar hook guy. Oh, the catchy pop caricature. Well...he, Joe Vitale & Kenny Pasarelli were like the Beatles in the way their chemistry combined on this session, back then. Pure magic.
Just trust me here- this timeless album is one of the secret 'great ones' of rock, that just slowly reels you in, tugs at your heart & then totally takes your breath away. Gorgeous electric & acoustic guitar tones, fat synths, sweet piano, Vitale's haunting flute & tasteful drumming...its alchemy at its most soulful & musical.
Walsh, with his new loyal (& awesome) Barnstorm bandmates Joe Vitale & Kenny Pasarelli, did the intense 'method' approach that marked a band who were serious about their art -they moved up to a house in the Rockies to be inspired & rehearsed/wrote for months, before knowing they were ready to record. (The lyrics of the song 'Rocky Mountain Way', on the following 'Smoker' record, recounts this sabbatical).
But, the sincere, focused creative work they did "up yonder", and their amazing chemistry as musicians, with Joe's directorship, is what makes "Barnstorm" an unforgettable, special experience for a album-loving rock fan. There's simply magic in the rarified Rocky Mtn. air of these connected, intensely musical, flowing songs.
I can say I envy those who love great rock music, and have the thrill ahead for them of discovering "Barnstorm", (when it finally appears in new release??) in their future. Note to trippers: Don't take Ecstacy, or you just might cry like a baby before you've finished. Its that stirring, and heartfelt. A real connected, continuous journey of feelings. They don't make albums like this anymore, people.
Abbey Road, Harvest, A Wizard/A True Star, Dark Side of the Moon....ah but you don't know 'Barnstorm'? You're missing out.
And, ya really don't know yet what Joe Walsh is capable of, then.
Its all on this, his great 'forgotten' 1st solo album. Enjoy it like priceless, forgotten vintage wine.
me again..........2006-03-08
I really like pre-Eagles Joe Walsh (from the James Gang up through _So What_), and this is maybe the coolest album from that era. So, even though about half these songs appeared on the _Look What I Did_ collection, it's kinda hard to figure why this record has been so hard to find. Anyway, you might like to know that a remastered version of this is now being sold over the web by somebody called Hip-O Select (which sounds like an unimaginative knockoff of Rhino Handmade, and coming from a vastly inferior label). I have not heard the new disc, but they're selling it at a reasonable price.
A good transition...Walsh's best album.......2005-09-22
Barnstorm [IMPORT] - Joe Walsh is his shinning moment. I never tire of listening to this work, either in vinyl or CD form. I have owned this work since its release, on vinyl, in the 1970's. There is a cohesion to this work, a direction. It conveys raw creativity.
My favorite cuts are HERE WE GO and MOTHER SAYS. It is one of the better rock albums, but has just enough of that country twang to keep everyone interested. It is a musical journey to the American West.
This was Walsh's transition from The James Gang to his solo work and eventually his teaming up with The Eagles. This is Joe Walsh's greatest musical achievment. In my opinion, while quite capable, Walsh has never captured the musical magic of Barnstorm. His other solo work and his work with The Eagles pales by comparison. If you are a fan of American Rock you need to own this CD.
Pricey.......2005-08-04
It was convenient to find this CD at Amazon.
The full album on CD seems a bit rare.
The price made me cringe, but occassionally
we need to indulge our nostalgia.
5 stars for the product.
