Concert/Live in London [Extra tracks] [Live] [Original recording remastered]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Like virtually every band in the mid-'60s, the Beach Boys were expected to deliver their hits in person--no mean feat considering the ever more baroque concoctions that Brian Wilson was constructing in the studio. Tellingly, at the time the 1964 Concert was recorded in Beach Boys hotbed Sacramento, the band had but a few hits of their own and so they padded their set with Jan and Dean's "Little Old Lady from Pasadena" (cowritten by Brian), Dion's "The Wanderer," "Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow" by the Rivingtons, Bobby Pickett's "The Monster Mash," and, of course, Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode." The instrumental backing here is sparse and simplistic; it's the band's vocal interplay that carries the day before a throng of screaming fans. By the time the year was out, Brian suffered his first nervous breakdown and gave up touring to concentrate on his studio productions. Live in London was culled from live shows recorded at a time (1968) when the band were virtual pop-cultural outcasts in their home country, but still enjoyed an enthusiastic following in England. These recordings document the Beach Boys' remarkable resilience in the face of Brian's deliberate distancing and their frigid American career prospects; when the going got tough, the tough got spectacularly professional. Augmented by a horn section, the band locks into a powerful groove, giving energetic, largely note-perfect versions of the expected hits along with some key album cuts. Digitally remastered, this long out-of-print twofer edition features commentary by David Leaf (The Beach Boys and the California Myth), as well as two bonus cuts: a 1964 concert rendition of "Don't Worry Baby" and a 1967 live version (from the unreleased Lei'd in Hawaii album) of the challenging "Heroes and Villains" that features a rare appearance by Brian Wilson performing with the band. --Jerry McCulley

Beach Boys Live/re-master.......2007-07-02
I first heard this recording on vinyl years ago, it absolutely blew me away. The layers of sound that a live concert has is special and amazing. I thought that the original master had a richness and it could have only been beat by actually attending a real concert. I bought this CD assuming with all of the wonderful technology we have now that it would be a superior recording. Boy, was I suprised! With this new re-master they modified and compressed it to a point that it just seems like one big jumble of sound with non-stop screaming girls. The other recording had the girls too, but all through the concert you could hear vocals when you were supposed to hear vocals, & instruments when you were supposed to hear instruments. I would probably look for a CD that was an earlier re-master or if you have a pristine vinyl & a UBS turntable, you could transfer it directly to your computer harddrive. But, if all that isn't possible go ahead and get it because it it is still a great concert no matter what.

not as good as the one i had. i shuld have reviewed it.
BEACH BOYS. "CONCERT/ LIVE IN LONDON", A MUST HAVE HISTORICAL BEACH BOYS RETROSPECTIVE............. .......2007-02-21
I enjoyed this cd even though I'm not a big fan of live recordings. The reason I bought this "Beach Boys Concert" was to hear the Beach Boys young vibrant falsetto voices. This live set is not great even though versions of Beach Boys hits are performed well live. The Beach Boys Concert is interesting because it is during the start of Beatlemania 1964. It was nice knowing that not only The Beatles had screaming fans but the Beach Boys did to as you listen to "Concert". With all the screaming the performance still comes out well. "Live In London" is an interesting listen because I think as the Beach Boys perform tracks from "Wild Honey" these live performances of "Wild Honey" sound better than the original lp did. "London" also gives you a perspective of how crazy England was for The Beach Boys at this time of Beatle dominance in 1968. The Beach Boys "Concert/Live in London" is a must have just to hear the young Beach Boys young falsetto voices live. The Beach Boys "Concert/Live in London" is a must own due to its historical place in rock music history...............
Ladies and gentlemen, my pleasure to introduce to you, the stars of the show, here tonight with beautiful sounds, the Beach Boys.......2006-09-03
This CD features two live albums by the Beach Boys.
Beach Boys Concert was recorded in 1964 in Sacramento. It features the Beach Boys original lineup of Brian, Carl, Dennis, Mike and Al. Brian stopped going out on tour shortly after this. The group sounds good, if a bit sloppy at times, and the audience is frequently too loud. The songs consist of five Beach Boys originals, and eight cover versions of other people's songs. There are a few odd song choices, including "Long Tall Texan" and "Monster Mash", of all things.
Live in London was recorded in 1968. At this time, the touring group was backed up by several other musicians, including a horn section. This gave their live performances a "fuller" sound, and allowed them to play the songs closer to how they sounded on their records. Unlike their first concert album, this one doesn't feature any songs that they hadn't previously recorded.
There are two bonus tracks on the CD. "Don't Worry Baby" is an outtake from the show that was recorded for their first concert album. "Heroes and Villains" is from the unreleased live album called Lei'd in Hawaii.
This CD gives you an idea how the Beach Boys sounded during two different time periods. They sounded good, but not as good as they did in the recording studio.
Concert 3 stars, Live in London 5 stars.......2005-12-28
Concert is an early Beach Boys concert, the big thing is that you get to hear the band with Brian Wilson. But the set selections are quite weak, few Beach Boys originals and lots of insipid covers, even an instrumental. Its more of archival and historic importance. Live in London, although without Brian, is really outstanding. Unlike other great 60's band, the Beach Boys never stopped touring, and it shows in this recording. By 1967-68, when this record was recorded, the Beach boys were a mean live Rock n Roll well oiled machine. One of the best live band of the time, no question about it. All the vocals are spot on, and Mile Love is great as a ringmaster. The vocals on Darlin by Carl Wilson are nothing short of extraordinare. Live in London may be one of the best live recordings of the sixties.

Customer Reviews:
I liked it a lot better when I was 10.......2002-01-02
Back in the day, before I reached puberty, I used to listen to Live In London all the time. This was a GREAT album. Wake the World, Do it Again, but especially Aren't You Glad (my favorite song on the album) were all great songs. Same with Darlin' and Wouldn't it be Nice.
I listen to it today, and it sounds a bit loungy. A little bit corny. For a time, I thought this was the only live album that sounded better than studio recordings. I still feel that way with Aren't You Glad (only because it's too feminine coming out of the studio) and Wake the World (same reason), but the rest of the album just didn't impress me as a concert the Beach Boys really worked hard through.
THIS IS A KEEPER...!.......2001-01-02
Having had the Beach Boys Live in London album in the early nineteen seventies and loved it, I was delighted to see it available on CD and bought it to replace my now obsolete vinyl. The plus is that the CD includes the tracks from the Beach Boys first album to go number one, Beach Boys Concert(1964). The CD also two bonus tracks and a comprehensive liner.
This is a great CD. Listening to it makes one understand why the Beach Boys remain one of the most popular American groups of all time. It also contains my favorite song by them..."Darlin'" which I believe to be one of the best songs written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love.
Not all of the songs on this CD were written by the Beach Boys, but that does not detract from the quality. On the contrary, it is great to hear the Beach Boys with their signature sound, interpreting such classics as the Freshmen's "Graduation Day" and Dion's "The Wanderer."
If you could only have one Beach Boys CD, this would be it!
Back-to-back documents of the Beach Boys' live sound.......2000-08-14
Though this isn't essential to those who just want to get an earful of the Beach Boys, it is more than a collector's-only buy. This CD teams up two previously released live Beach Boys LP's, featuring a 1964 show in Sacramento, CA and a few 1968 shows from London. It was originally available as a domestic release, but has since been cut out by Capitol USA. Rumor has it that it will be reissued in the States, but for now it's available only as an import.
Of the 13 tracks on "Concert," only 5 are Beach Boys originals ("Fun, Fun, Fun" "Little Deuce Coupe" "In My Room" "Hawaii" and "I Get Around"). The other 8 are a combination of hits of the day ("The Little Old Lady From Pasadena" "Monster Mash" etc.), a surf tune ("Let's Go Trippin'") and classics such as "Papa Oom Mow Mow" (with a great lead vocal from Brian) "Johnny B. Goode" and the Four Freshman's "Graduation Day."
The vocal harmonies are classic Beach Boys, showing they could actually sing outside of the studio ("Graduation Day", in particular, is really quite stunning in its harmonies). Musially the Beach Boys were a surprisingly good dance band, circa 1964. "Let's Go Trippin'" surely had the audience in the aisles doing the Surfer Stomp. The sound quality is quite good, considering what sort of equipment was available for field recording in 1964. The vocals aren't quite as present as one would like, but there is some bottom end and you can actually hear Brian's bass.
"Live in London" was recorded in 1968, released overseas in 1970, and finally released in the USA (and then as "Beach Boys '69") in 1975. By the time this was recorded Brian was long off the road, and Bruce Johnston was traveling in his place. They were also employing a horn section for their road show by this point.
This set concentrates on the Beach Boys' music from the mid-to-late 60's. All but one track ("Sloop John B") are originals. Three cuts are from the Pet Sounds LP ("Wouldn't it Be Nice" with Al and Mike handling Brian's vocal, "Sloop John B" and "God Only Knows" with a great live vocal from Carl), a few earlier tracks ("California Girls" "Barbara Ann"), a bunch of later classics ("Do it Again" "Bluebirds Over the Mountain" "Good Vibrations"), and several lesser known Beach Boys nuggets.
As befits the late 60's timeframe, this show is a bit more laidback than the Beatlemaniac screaming audience atmosphere of "Concert", though the audience is quite enthusiastic, and the performance is very energetic. Mike Love has quite firmly taken control of the live show, and spends a good deal of time telling, uh, jokes, between songs. Carl's vocals are quite strong by this point, and Dennis Wilson's drumming (if it's him playing) has gotten quite passable. The acapella version of the Four Freshman's "Their Hearts Were Full of Spring" is chilling.
Each spin of this disc proves it to be less of a novelty and more of a bona fide document of a great American rock band on the road.
Definitive Live Collection for any band to emulate.......2000-04-20
This two-fer is really a must, whether one is a casual fan (for which many hits are performed) or a die-hard devotee. I purchased the Live In London (aka London '69) album when I was in Jr. High (at its first release), and am still very impressed by how talented the Beach Boys were as a touring act in the late 60s. The first half of the two-fer is the 1964 Concert (aka Wow, Great Concert) album. Although mixed badly, with too many surges and bad edits, this is a "sonic document" showing the sex appeal and humour of the Beach Boys onstage shortly before the addition of Bruce Johnston. The crowd sounds like it's from Liverpool, but the band is all tight harmonies and musicianship from Hawthorne.
It is a great live album with some rare songs.......1999-06-30
