3 out of 5 stars The Doctor Is On The Bus.......2006-10-25

Sure it's hard to think of this as being much of an album. But since it wasn't even conceived as one, you can't necessarily just write this off as "Magic Bus" and a bunch of filler, either. Granted,including the already available "Run Run Run" and "Pictures of Lily" isn't helping my argument, but I'd hate to see some of the others lost to the obscurity of some rarities collection -- if ever released at all.

Chief amonst them, for me, has got to be Entwistle's "Doctor, Doctor." Does anyone else not see and hear the genius in this? Recorded in April '67 soon after "Pictures of Lilly" and appearing as its b-side, it's a lovably goofy and psychedelic testament to the way things were back in Mod London in the greatest year in rock history. Townshend's heavily distorted guitar crashes and burns, as it often did literally back then. Entwistle sings the words of this miserable mess of a patient (is it real, or is he just a hypochondriac?) in a wonderful falsetto and, if my ears do me right, I would swear that's Moonie joining in on the doubled parts -- it's the perfect song for him, too.

This cd was released after THE WHO SELL OUT did not do for the WHO what it should have. This cd contains some "A" and "B" sides and also songs included on THE WHO s' second and third albums (A QUICK ONE and SELLS OUT). At the moment of its release THE WHO had enough songs recorded for a follow up to SELLS OUT (Faith in Something Bigger, Jaguar, Glow Girl, Dogs, Magic Bus, Doctor Jeckyl and Mr. Hide, Girls Eyes and some others). The story says that Keith Lambert (the Who s' great manager and producer), wanted to release a record with a name like "Who s' for Tennis" (horrible name for an album). So someone at DECCA/MCA (their record company), decided to do "this" including their then new 45 "Magic Bus". This cd includes some songs recorded for WHO SELLS OUT in a different mix. Also 3 John Entwistle compositions: "Doctor Doctor", "Someone is Coming", "Doctor Jeckyl & Mr. Hide, this one has not yet appeared on any other cd, mix or version and is one of his best songs (sadly they never played in concert).

It also includes the horrible "Buckett T" (a number one single in Sweden--they have bad taste there). The also not favorite of mine 45 Who single "Call me lightning" is here (a number 54 in the US charts) and of course "Pictures of Lily" (a number 4 in England), and "Magic Bus" (a number 25 in US charts). From the Who s' second album "Run, Run, Run" and a strage mix of "Disguises" (it sounds as a razor edge in Roger s' mic).

If you are a real WHO fan, then you should have this because of "Jeckyl and Hide) and "Magic Bus", and also the other songs that have different mixes.

As other reviewers have pointed out, this was a slapped together album of Who singles and tracks from other albums that MCA made while the Who was working on "Tommy." "Run, Run, Run" is on the "Happy Jack" album, "Our Love Was/Is" is on the "Who Sell Out." "Disguises" isn't a bad song, but here it sounds as if someone is kicking a sheet of metal while Daltrey is trying to sing. A better, live version of the song exists on the Who at the BBC compilation. The two best songs here--"Magic Bus" and "Pictures of Lily"--are avaliable on the much better "Meaty, Beaty, Big, and Bouncy." But if you are a Who fanatic, it might be worth getting a used copy of this CD. The more obscure tracks aren't bad, but not worth the $15 new price tag.

In 1968 the Who had a surprise American hit with "Magic Bus" but had no new album to support it. So Decca Records (later MCA, now Universal Music) quickly cobbled together a collection of singles, flipsides, UK-only EP tracks and earlier album cuts to create this album. Though it was a good seller for them, the group and management didn't appreciate this quick cash-in LP so it's never been given the remastering treatment like thier other albums.

The original Decca vinyl sounded tinny due to using simulated stereo. The CD isnt much improvment. You'd think someone at the record company would have taken time to find the mono masters, but since this was a budget reissue job they just used the same lousy fake stereo LP master instead.

Some of these tracks have appeared on the "A Quick One" and "Who Sell Out" CD's, and also the "Maximum R&B" box set in remixed stereo. If you want the mono versions, seek out the rare "Rarities Vol 1 & 2" CD from Polydor in the UK. It's hard to find but worth it.

Ok sound quality is an issue hear I guess.But if you look past that detail which is hard for people born into the world of compact disc's that never listened to beat up old records on stack up the record album players.You will realize this is The Who in a time of transition with Tommy on the horizon and Who's next and Quadrophenia a few year's to come.I must say for me its about song sequence on this disc,even though 2 songs are pulled from the Who's greatest album The Who sellout(OUR LOVE WAS and I CAN'T REACH YOU)the only track I don't dig is the beach boy sounding BUCKET T.But DISGUISES and SOMEONES COMING are gems, not to forget about MAGIC BUS and PICTURES OF LILY which I always thought rocked and also RUN RUN RUN which I also believe was pulled from a previous album.Also a side note I bought this album in the early 70's at SAM GOODY'S for a dollar ninety nine in the cutout bin.I still have the cover hangin on my wall because I love that cover.To me it's The Who in the 60's also the vinyl took a walk on me at one of those unforgetable weekend parties I had at my parents house when they were on vacation.O well at least the bastards didn't steal the cover on me.Anyway this is the 1st time since that night I have heard these song's in this sequence.TO ANYONE WHO CARES ROCK ON MARK D.

    Got this, and a few others by the same producers, and LOVE it! -- except for the poor recording quality. The songs are upbeat, fun and perfect for an afternoon ride in the car. My little one likes to sing along! It also ends with classical music, that seems to coincide with my little one dosing off in his carseat. The only real problem... and, it's a real problem - as I have this CD and a few others by the same company... the volume greatly fluctuates between songs. I'm always having to turn the volume down or up to make the CD enjoyable. Very unfortunate... because I do enjoy the music.

    My husband purchased this cd when our daughter was about 7 months old and she now is 13 months old. She absolutely loves the music!!! My 3 year-old niece loves the songs and playing sing-along! We play it for our daughter her all the time in the car when we run errands. She really enjoys the songs..we love the songs too!! I find it that playing this cd helps sooth her, specially during those times that she is being fussy. I'll definitely recommend it to any parent of infants and toddlers.

    This is a great ride-in-the-car CD. It's not really childish, but takes a few modern adult songs and makes them child-level. It also takes the classic child songs and spices them up a bit for even adults to enjoy. It ends the CD with a few classical songs to settle kids down for (hopefully) a short siesta. Definitely one we'll be listening to often.
