Assembled via casting call as American television's answer to the Beatles, the Monkees incurred the wrath of "serious" critics from L.A. to London. But, though initially a manufactured pop commodity, they displayed a willful, sometimes perverse, drive to wrest control of their musical destiny from the all-star stable of songwriters and producers (including Boyce and Hart, King and Goffin, Mann and Weil, Neil Diamond, and Chip Douglas) who made them pop stars. Maybe the notoriously frenzied '60s had something to do with it: their artistic legacy in that decade bridged both Don Kirshner and Jack Nicholson; and Jimi Hendrix opened for them, if only a few times, on a 1967 tour. Even more unlikely, that legacy had a three-decade-plus staying power well beyond its obvious nostalgic charms. Though Rhino has previously reissued and anthologized the Monkees' catalog to seemingly exhaustive extremes, this four-disc collection of 99 tracks (each individually annotated by band members and songwriters in the set's colorful booklet) is the only one that spans their full recorded output. Structured around the A- and B-sides of the band's singles, strong album cuts, and outtakes (including three previously unreleased), it's a journey that's both comfortably familiar and occasionally surprising. The Monkees' individual parts--Mike Nesmith's tuneful, pioneering country-rock; Davy Jones's Broadway-honed panache; Peter Tork's spirituality and innate musical chemistry; and Micky Dolenz's loopiness and occasionally avant-garde instincts--are showcased well. But by the sometimes-spotty fourth disc (largely spanning the mid-'70s to mid-'90s), the band's output was hampered by partial lineups, part-time commitments, and, perhaps ironically, the lack of the very pop song-crafter thoroughbreds who'd helped to establish their legend in the first place. --Jerry McCulley

Perhaps it's the color scheme and imagery on the slipcase art for Live at the Gorge, recalling Roger Dean's classic 1970s-era album jackets, but this 7-disc set of live Pearl Jam feels warmly retro. Fans will concur, of course, since the 100 tracks favor Ten and Vs. And let's not kid ourselves, it'll be mostly committed fans that buy Gorge, given the sprawl and the fact that several tunes appear three times. That fact alone is retro: Fans buy live albums; generalists stay away. What fans will get--and generalists miss--here is an old-school, road-proved rock throwdown, from start to finish. Eddie Vedder's connection to fans is palpable in the between-song chatter and the Brit-style sing-a-longs (not to mention the Tom Petty goading he has going strong on the 2005 gig or the two appearances of Petty's "I Won't Back Down"). The general soundscape goes like this: The 2005 set is somber and slow-to-build, with its highlight in "I Believe in Miracles" as a show-opener. The 2006 discs, all four of them, are heated and gritty, with the final show's opening, "Severed Hand," providing a great vantage point into Pearl Jam's version of what Keith Richards calls "guitar weaving." It was a sweltering day at the Gorge (in George, Washington, no less), and the music embodies the heat. --Andrew Bartlett

Pearl Jam rewards their fans again.......2007-07-13
Pearl Jam is the most important band to emerge in the early 90's and really the only one that has stood the test of time. That is a huge testament to quality of their music, and the best showcase for their music has always been their live performances. Fortunately for us fans, a few years ago the band decided to start releasing their live performances and ever since we have had a wealth of live Pearl Jam to enjoy. Some fans may have already downloaded one or more of the shows included in this set (as I had), but this box set still remains a worthwhile investment, even if you have downloaded the shows. It provides that tactile feel that is missing from downloaded music (although kudos to PJ for including pictures and artwork with the downloads). Plus the sound quality tends to be better. The packaging is similar to the 03 bootlegs with tri-fold cardboard cases containing each of the three shows. The artwork is nice, with the outer covers giving a sense of the natural environment of the Gorge, with the inside containing what appear to be images of the Gorge under construction (?).
The 05 show is contained on Discs 1 - 3. Disc 1 is an acoustic set, similar to the Mansfield set from 03. This particular set list is not as strong as the Mansfield acoustic set, but is still enjoyable and includes Hard to Imagine. Discs 2 and 3 contain the remainder of the show, and a number of rarities including Alone, Sad and Undone. Other notable songs include Dissident, MFC, Not for You, and In My Tree. The only downside of this show is that the attempts to annoy Tom Petty occasionally take away from the music, in my opinion.
Discs 4 and 5 contain the first 06 show and this show is the highlight of the entire box set. A great set list is highlighted by Wash, great performances of Corduroy and Hail Hail, Down, Daughter/It's OK, and Blood. But it is the first encore (Disc 5) that really shines. The band plays through Footsteps, Once, Alive, State of Love and Trust, Crown of Thorns, Leash and Porch without stopping. This is a real treat for fans of older Pearl Jam as these are all classics - but the best is yet to come when they play the rarely played Dirty Frank in the closing set.
Discs 6 and 7 contain the second 06 show and again fans are treated to some gems including God's Dice, In Hiding, Green Disease, Betterman/Save it for Later, the re-worked Garden, Rats, and Whipping. They close with Yellow Ledbetter, to which Mike adds the Star Spangled Banner. Those familiar with the 06 tour know that Mike frequently played the Star Spangled Banner during Yellow Ledbetter, and together with Eddie's vaguely anti-war lyrics, this classic song has taken on a whole new meaning, one that is especially relevant given the current state of affairs in the world.
In summary, Pearl Jam continues to reward their fans by making their live shows available, in one format or another, for reasonable prices. This set is no exception and it highlights the greatest band doing what they do best. A great mix of classic songs, new versions of songs, and rare songs make this set especially attractive. This is a must have.
Fantastic Live Shows.......2007-07-10
Pearl Jam have put out so many live records/bootlegs its hard to even count, but these 3 shows from the Gorge will always be considered to be some of their best. I know many PJ fans say these shows were in the top 5 best shows of the bands 2006 tour. Thats saying something because the band is 95% of the time just flat out incredible live. Im sure people have their own opinions about which of these shows was the best. I can just say that if you love their music or are wanting to get into the bands music this is the best place to start. The band sounds so fresh and energetic here. The whole box set sounds amazing and was remastered very well with everything sounding VERY crisp and clean. The setlists cover a wide variety of songs that are just played perfect for the most part. There are very few mistakes or flub ups made by the band during these shows. There is actually only about 3 or 4 that really stick out and with 3 whole shows clocking in over 7 hours that aint bad. The band was most certainly tight during those shows.
The first show recorded on September 1st 2005, not September 5th like the box says, is the second best show of the set in my eyes. The first disc of this show is just incredible and is worth 40 bucks alone. The band opens up with I Believe In Miracles. Ive NEVER heard a version of this song I liked better. Its really the best Ive ever heard, not to mention a lot of other PJ fans can agree. The takes on Low Light, I Am Mine, Crazy Mary, and Black are also some of the best Ive heard. When I was listening to Black on that disc I actually cried! Ive heard the song hundreds of times, but that version did it for me. The only mistake on this disc is where Eddie messes up the lyrics on Off He Goes, but its forgivable and he just laughs it off. I cant forget the awesome version of Hard To Imagine. The band doesnt play this one much, so its certainly a huge plus. Eds voice has never sounded better. Whoever thinks Ed Vedder has lost his pipes should listen to this. The second disc starts off with the only version of Given To Fly I even listen to. I think the song is overplayed, but this one has the energy like no other. Other stong takes on this disc are Last Exit, Save You, Alone, Sad, Not For You, Dissident, and Undone. Some of those songs are hard to come by live and they are played perfect. Ed messes up on Do The Evolution and Insignificance, but I believe he just got too excited. Disc 3 also has a few good versions of Love Boat Captain, Last Kiss, and Blood. Theres the version of I Wont Back Down thats a little rusty, but is played better on the third show of the box set. The September 1st show was a great one. Really an all around perfect live performance.
The second show recorded on July 22nd 2006 is my personal favorite out of the entire box set. It makes my top 10 favorite PJ shows for sure. The setlist, the energy, and the whole vibe is just WOW. Not to mention the show opens up with a killer take on Wash. I havent got the room to type all the great versions on this show because nearly all are great! The ones that stick out the most as being special are Hail Hail, Severed Hand, Unemployable, Black, Insignificance, Life Wasted, and Blood on the first disc. The second disc is the real treat in my eyes. So many awesome songs that are played perfect. Once, Alive now Ed can certainly belt this one out, State of Love and Trust played so sweetly, Leash, Porch, Inside Job, and Go are all just mind blowingly excellent. The performance of Last Kiss is most likely the best Ive heard... ever. I usually dont like the song live, but its really good here. I didnt list Footsteps because this version is in a league of its own. My God, Ed has never sung the song better. It sends little chills through my whole body. Cant forget Dirty Frank, this song isnt played much at all. Its really cool to hear this live. Ed can still sing it good too. This show is just fantastic anyway you can look at it.
The last show from the Gorge Box Set is my least favorite, but is by no means anywhere near bad. Its still incredible, but compared with the other two shows it lacks. The first disc is the best of this show. I love opening up with Severed Hand. Other really great versions are In Hiding where Eds voice sounds great, Marker In The Sand, and Army Reserve sounds better here than on the studio version. This discs last 5 songs are just pure intense energy. Its so good to hear Garden, Jeremy, and Why Go played with so much energy and raw passion. Garden sounds better here than on the studio version for sure. Its another song where Ed sounds better now than he ever has. I cant believe people say the band sounded better in the early 90s. They sound better here to me. The second disc has good takes on Life Wasted, Big Wave, Satans Bed, Alive, and a wicked version of Crazy Mary. So this show can really hold its ground as being awesome too.
If you read all this Im sorry its long, but with 7 whole discs of music theres a lot to cover. I highly recommend this set to anyone who likes rock music or is just a casual PJ fan. You cant beat 7 discs for 40 bucks. This set just shows how great this band is, how talented, and how hard these boys still rock. God, I wish I could have been a teen in the 90s to hear them!
Classic live box, must have it..........2007-07-10
Well it's hard to say something bad about this boxset because it's perfect. You get more than 7 hours of live rock music for only $40, great setlists and many rarities.
Sept. 1st 2005
One show = 36 songs, what to say. On first 3 cd's you can find classic songs like "Black", "Small Town", "Even Flow", "Daughter", "State of Love and Trust", "Alive", "Last Kiss", "Betterman", "Yellow Ledbetter"... and many rarities like "Man of the Hour", "Hard to Imagine", "Alone", "Undone", "Crown of Thorns", "Sad"... plus they played 3 great covers "I Believe in Miracles" (Ramones), "I Won't Back Down" (Tom Petty) and "Baba O'Riley" (Who). They also played "Love Boat Captain", song written after Roskilde tragedy in 2000.
July 22nd & 23rd 2006
Last two shows on American Tour in 2006. On these 4 cd's you can hear almost the whole new album they had released in 2006 (selftitled album "Pearl Jam"). Again, like in 2005 they played many rarities like "Mamasan Trilogy" (Footsteps, Once, Alive), "Leash", "Dirty Frank", "Wash", "Down", "God's Dice", "In Hiding", "Garden", "Rats", Jimi Hendrix "Little Wing" and Neil Young "Rockin' in the Free World" and "F*ckin' up" plus many classics...
After all, if you decide to buy this box, trust me, you won't regret because this box is a piece of art.
Notice: tracklisting on Amazon is incorrect:
Sept. 1st 2005: 1st cd has 9 songs, 2nd cd has 17 songs, 3rd cd has 11 songs
July 22nd 2006: 1st cd has 17 songs, 2nd cd has 15 songs
July 23rd 2006: 1st cd has 18 songs, 2nd cd has 13 songs
9/10.......2007-07-07
Seven discs of live Pearl Jam for a reasonable price. I couldn't turn it down, even though I already own the July 22 show, which I also had the privilege of attending. It's a nice colorful box set of digipacks, the only downside being that it does not contain any liner notes or pictures of the shows.
But packaging aside, here is some vital information I assembled that might be useful to some of you who may be indecisive as to whether or not to acquire this box. I did a tally of all the songs and arranged them by era, based on the studio albums, so you can quickly see how many songs you're getting from whatever albums you love. Non-LP songs include b-sides and session songs. (Yeah, I was bored at work.) So here are the album-eras of Pearl Jam, followed by the number of songs performed live in this box set:
Ten ......... 12 (eight LP, four non-LP)
Vs. .......... 11 (nine LP, two non-LP)
Vitalogy .... 7
No Code .... 3
Yield ......... 5
Binaural .... 3 (two LP, one non-LP)
Riot Act .... 6 (four LP, two non-LP)
Pearl Jam ... 12
Covers ...... 8
Other ........ 3
Amidst the three long shows, totaling exactly 100 tracks (there are tracks not listed on Amazon for some reason), there are five threepeated songs (Evenflow, Alive, Corduroy, Given to Fly, and Yellow Ledbetter). As you can tell from the tally, it's a good mix of material; not entirely representative of every album, but most likely representative of the albums that the majority of people want to hear (i.e. Ten and Vs.). But all the performances are spot-on and well done by the band, and of course there's a lot of mid-song banter that gives that "realness" to the shows, and makes you feel like you were there even if you weren't. So if you're a fan, there's really no reason not to pick this up.
A couple of side notes: Among the "other" songs is a dual performance of Mother Love Bone's "Crown of Thorns," which they have been playing fairly often in the past few years. I didn't think it fair to consider that a cover song. Also included in the later versions of Yellow Ledbetter is a Hendrix tribute that McCready has been squeezing in in recent shows, which includes excerpts from "Little Wing" and "The Star-spangled Banner," the former of which is covered as a separate track on the last disc.
Great collection of live Pearl Jam.......2007-07-06
All three of these shows pretty much cover all the bases of pearl jam live. All of the hits, some rarities and some great covers. I was at the first Gorge show ('05) and knew right away that I was experiencing one of the great P.J. shows. I didn't even know this set was going to be released and was quite excited to see it on the store shelf and purchased it immediately. If you're a fan of Pearl Jam's albums or of their live show I do not see how you could be disappointed in this collection. This set is also an excellent introduction for the casual fan to Pearl Jam's live show, with three unique set lists to absorb. Recommended!!

Customer Reviews:
Essential for any Genesis fan .......2007-07-17
I was 14 when Genesis' "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" came out, and my music world was never quite the same after that. When Peter Gabriel left, it was quite the shock and it looked like that might be it for Genesis. But instead, the band surprised everyone (including themselves) by delivering what is arguably their finest album ever ("A Trick of the Tail") and would march on for many years, taking lots of left and right turns. I, for one, was quite taken aback with the turn taken with "Duke" and "Abacab", neither of which I ever bought. Until now.
"Genesis 1976-1982" (6 CDs, 6 DVDs) is extraordinary on so many levels. I'm not going into a dissection of each of the 5 studio albums from that period, except to say that having now listened to "Duke" and "Abacab" from start to finish (and with the benefit of 25+ years hindsight), I can see what the band was trying to do. Each of the albums is now also onto 5.1 Surround Sound, and that sounds absolutely amazing, if you have the right audio set-up at home (which I happen to have). The 6th CD "Extra Tracks" (13 tracks, 59 min.) collects odds-and-ends from various EPs, B-sides and other miscellaneous "lost" songs from that period. The colletion sounds a bit disjointed because, well it IS disjointed, although I love "Inside and Out", with a furious Tony Banks solo towards the end, wow, and better yet is "Inside and Out", which really shoulda been on the "Winds & Wuthering" album, just outstanding.
The real pay-off on this set are the various visuals added onto the DVDs. Let's start with the absolute best of the whole bunch: a 45 min. concert from 1976 (on the "Trick of the Tail" DVD), with (surpisingly) excellent audio and video and stunning tracks like "Fly on a Windshield", "Entangled" and "Los Endos" (I saw Genesis on their 1977 tour and this brings back many memories). Equally good is a 45 min. excerpt from a 1980 London show (on the "Duke" DVD) with killer performances like "In the Cage", "Dance on a Volcane" and again "Los Endos"). Also not to be missed is a 40 min. 1978 BBC documentary called "Three Dates with Genesis" (on the "And Then There Were Three" DVD), where the BBC reporter follows the band on 3 shows (Germany, Holland and then Knebworth). The real eye opener is of course to see a behind the scenes look at a big festival like Knebworth in 1978 (admission price: 5.50 British Pounds!), it's like watching a time capsule. Each of the 5 studio albums comes with a "2007 reissue interview", which lasts about 15-20 min. each and is quite interesting the first time around. This box-set also collects the many videos the band did, which are quite enjoyable (I remember seeing the "Robbery, Asualt & Battery" video as a kid on Belgian TV in '76; hadn't seen it since). Last but not least, the set contains a nice 48 page booklet with great liner notes.
I can't emphasize enough how estatic I am with this reissue. I already was tempted to buy this when Best Buy ran it with $30 off, but then when I saw that Amazon sells it at FIFTY PERCENT OFF, I immediately jumped on it and ordered it here. Best decision in a long time. This box set is absolutely essential for Genesis fans from the 1970s. As for Genesis fans from the latter era, give this a look and listen. Chances are you'll be stunned, in the best possible way.
Fully Utilized Re-mastering Techniques!.......2007-07-14
As it is with most avenues that Genesis have journeyed down over their 40- year career, this first boxed set to be released out of the eventual three, is innovative, refreshing, and thought- provoking. Just with the knowledge that this 5- album, 12-disc collection is only the first of three re-mastering sessions is enough to stir emotion for several weeks upon end. One could never think that just one group of artists could have the vast history that Genesis posses.
Indeed, this set documents their Beginning and Empirical stages with grandeur like only Hackett, Collins, Rutherford, and Banks could.
I quite liked seeing Steven Hackett in the first two "Review Documentaries" for the albums "A Trick of the Tail" and "Wind and Wuthering". These alone, are worth having the DVDs. All five Review Documentaries are fantastically insightful. With interviews with Hackett, Collins, Banks, and Rutherford; how could they not be?!
There are plenty of other extras on these DVDs, of course. All five DVDs contain photographs of the touring programs from the coinciding tour that took place with the given album. All contain at least 2 videos from that period. As you reach the Duke and ABACAB DVDs, you get actual music videos as we know them to be currently. Although, it must be noted that the "concert film" for A Trick of the Tail and the "three dates with Genesis" for Wind and Wuthering are the true gems out of all five DVDs. Even the interesting and often comical videos for the ABACAB period don't quite match up to these.
Then, there are the DTS 5.1/ Dolby Digital re-masterings that are found on the DVDs. Why American versions of the CDs do not contain the SACD, I've no idea. They are re-mastered in Dolby Stereo, however; giving the records a much more lush and coherent sound.
A special note to those who are playing the music videos on the DVDs : You must select the type of sound quality that your DVD player/ sound-system is capable of. If you do not have the ability to play DTS 5.1 audio but you select that audio, the sound will be absent from the music videos. There are two instances where you are given the chance to select the type of audio you want. If you fall victim to not having the capabilities of playing the DTS 5.1, do not freak out or think that the DVDs are damaged; simply select the Dolby Digital audio selection instead of the DTS. Other than that, you should be smooth sailing for weeks to come!
There really is no need to get into how first-class the records, themselves, are. If you're a fan of Genesis, you know that these are simply some of the most brilliantly written tunes of modern music. All five albums express emotions that inspire all who listen. The musicianship that is exposed by every song, by all four members of the band can't be compared with. This isn't even mentioning the voice of Phil Collins; a man with one of the most distinctive singing voices in music history. Not to mention that Banks and Rutherford occasionally offer their vocal talents on a few songs.
The last aspects worth significant mention are the "Extra Tracks" CD and DVD. This is the same format as the five conventional albums: the CD is re-mastered with Dolby Stereo (not SACD or DTS) and the DVD holds the DTS 5.1 and Dolby Digital Surround sound. As for the songs themselves, there could be an entirely new record based off the vitality of these songs. Many of these tracks were B-sides to ABACAB singles and Duke singles. Some of the others can be found on the 3X3 EP. The remaining can be found on their other EP from this time period.
Superior sound quality, distinguished song composition, admired presentation, and indisputable talent has always been the name of the game for Genesis. It's magnificent to see a band of artist who still maintains these traits after 40 years.
Nothing this ingenious could be rated anything less them 5 stars!
THIS is what you've been waiting for ... .......2007-07-12
Wow.
I'm 45. I've been a Genesis fan since I was 15. I've been really frustrated by the 'lack of attention to detail' of the last group of Genesis so-called "Remasters" (the absolute WORST packaging, including incorrect liner notes, and really ugly boxes on the back of EVERY Jewel case with the track listing -- yeah, some art work -- AND the title track of "The Lamb Lies Down...." actually FADED in, like on all other CD versions of the song, including the Japanese mini-lp version... good grief, anyone who knows the friggin' song KNOWS this has a hard beginning on the piano.)
OK, I haven't really studied the liner notes yet, but I can absolutely say that the packaging is a whole lot better for the 5 albums in here -- complete art work faithful to the original LP releases, including complete lyrics ("abacab" included). Even the CD labels are faithful to the original releases (The US domestic releases have ATCO/ATLANTIC labels -- I would have preferred The Great Charisma Label actually, and suspect the UK/European discs were pressed with them instead). This package DOES contain a 6th disc, with 13 B-sides and EP tracks recorded between 1976 and 1981.
But The Thing is, of course, the music. So what about the music?
I want to say right away that I haven't heard every track in here yet. But of what I've heard, these recordings sound fantastic. Davis clearly went back TO THE MASTER TAPES this time, and these are not only remastered, but they are remixed. For example, so far, of ALL the tracks that fade out (for example, "Wot Gorilla", "A Trick Of The Tail", "Inside And Out") that I've heard, they are all slightly extended. And there are differences in the sounds at the end of these tunes (you don't hear that decending tone so prominently at the end of "Wot Gorilla" as on the original mix, and the fade is extended just so nicely -- and on "Trick Of The Tail", again, a nice extended fade, and you don't hear Collins "grunts" at the end as prominently).
Of course, as a previous review has stated, "Submarine" is the full-length B-side single version with the hard ending, and "It's Yourself" comes complete with an extra verse (sometimes heard on some really bad-sounding bootlegs). And at least they included "Me & Virgil" and "Match Of The Day" (omitted from the Archive 2 Box) -- which also, I might add, sound just great!
My ONLY complaint (so far) would be that for some reason, "It's Yourself" fades, like on the Archive 2 Box. I have the Italian single version; this song actually has a really sweet hard ending, and it doesn't make sense that someone would want to fade out the song when a perfect ending exists on the master tape. But that's what they did. Go figure. What I'd LIKE to have is that ending tacked onto this remastered version.
Given that one complaint, I gotta say they finally got it right with this release -- and I can't wait for them to put out The Gabriel Years -- if the master tapes have been properly stored, there's no telling how these will sound (HOPEfully, they'll fix it so "The Lamb..." starts like the LP does ... withOUT the crackle).
Gary
YES, I am over the age of 13 ... lol.
PS: The package reviewed is the US Rhino release, and the tracks listened to were from the CD's and not the DVD's.
Do you like Phil Collins?.......2007-06-27
I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where, uh, Phil Collins' presence became more apparent.
I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Just listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority.
In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as, uh, anything I've heard in rock.
Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and, uh, Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist.
Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.
The DVD's are worth the price of admission.......2007-06-27
Simply put, this collection is outstanding. To hear Wind and Wuthering with clarity is great. To hear some of the songs that have long been missing from the Genesis CD catalogue, and to have them all in one place is wonderful. But the items that truly make this collection great are the DVD's. "In The Cage" on the Duke DVD is recorded before the 3 Sides Live era. The interviews, while I know are not new, I had never seen. And finally, to see all the other live footage with Steve Hacket is wonderful! If you are a true fan of this era of Genesis, do not hesitate on this one.

Customer Reviews:
Sounds like a cheap plastic toy.......2007-06-20
I have these DVD's and I can tell you that they will not be a huge part of my baby's development. I received them as a gift from someone that thinks that all you need to do is plunk your child in front of a TV all day without giving the baby any attention. You can see why these DVD's are popular at Day Care Centers or what I like to call, "Concentration camps for baby's with lazy parents", because they know that they can sit their kid/baby in front of the TV and let them turn into a thoughtless zombie while they listen to Baby Einstein totally ruin classics by Bach and DeBussy by playing the music with very cheap midi keyboards. I can get better quality music by whistling Dixie with a mouth-full of saltine crackers.
Also, it has been proven that classical music has nothing to do with the cognitive development of young people. Now, teach them how to play piano or violin and you have yourself an actual YOUNG EINSTEIN, but listening to this kind of music does nothing for the development of the brain. It is just for lazy parents that can't sit down with their kids and play with them or read them a book.
would make you sleepy.........2007-06-15
its a good product with very fine music and my toddler realizes that it is sleep time, if I play it. he goes to bed and sleeps after a couple songs. I have trouble in some songs are some months.. dont know why.
Kid's Music.......2007-06-08
I bought this CD for my grandniece, but after listening to it, I determined that no one would ever play this for her except me. I would have kept it for myself but I have the grown-up versions of each of the classical masterpieces on this CD. So, I ended up returning it for a full refund. If you want your kids to be exposed to classicl music, it's a great buy. But if you don't think they will get to listen to it, don't waste your time.
Baby Einstein: Lullaby Classics
Not soothing.......2007-06-07
These synthesizer versions of classical songs get really old, really fast. Worse yet, the songs are sometimes not soothing at all, especially the very first song. The song seems to get particularly loud and uptempo, which is precisely what you don't expect in a lullaby. Please listen to the sample of the first song at least before you buy.
Great for bedtime, but wish it were a real piano.......2007-06-01
This CD worked great to put my daughter to sleep while I rocked her in my arms, and I enjoyed the choices of songs and the arrangements. However, I would have preferred that real instruments were used.

As Basil Bunting wrote about Ezra Pound's Cantos, "There are the Alps... you will have to go a long way round/if you want to avoid them." Led Zeppelin's work is the central fact of 1970s rock & roll; in its loving homage to and shameless piracy from the blues, its glorious and wretched excess, its transformation of hippie and folk-rock graces into a foundation-shaking kaboom, and its offhanded myth-making, the band turned everything caught in its wake into a reaction to it--or against it. The three non-album tracks the box includes are grace notes rather than lost jewels, but the point of the set is to be a Rosetta stone of album rock, the stairway to a gaudy paradise that they constructed. --Douglas Wolk

Your one-stop Zep shop!.......2007-05-01
I got this because after all the years of playing just made my vinyl too noisy to convert to CD, and at around average cost of $9 a CD (it's a 9 album 10 CD set), it would have cost me at least $8-9 per CD plus shipping. The way the CD's are in a sleeve (like the albums were) was kind of neat, and the storage case keeps all the CD packaging in one spot with the booklet. Also that 2 CD's are in each "album" is an innovative packaging idea and it has everything that each LP had as far as artwork goes. I would suggest to any Zep fan that doesn't have a lot of their CD's go this route as it will save you money in the long run. And the re-masters sound great. A few of the bonus tracks on the "CODA" CD are pretty decent, but the fact you can get all their studio stuff new for under $100 I think is awesome!
Glorious that just doesn't cut it, Speechless is more like it........2007-03-07
These guys are the masters, the reigning kings of Hard Rock. Every gem is in this box set. Granduer, awesomeness and epic could be a couple of words to describe this box set, all I've got to say is buy it for your self, it will change your life. There was a time when I lost my job and I had to sell most of my record collection to make ends meet. Out of my whole collection I wouldn't give this up. This set got me through that peroid and also got me through other tough peroids in my life.
This box set chronciles the bands starting, up to its monarch like ascent and then to its fall when Bonzo died. All the albums are here in a 10 Box Set. Dazed and Confused, Ramble On, Misty Mountain Hop, Black Dog, Rock n'Roll, Stairway To Heavan, Achille's Last Stand, Candy Shop Rock, Kashmir, and Ozone Baby all those juicy bits are here a song for each mood. Led Zep's influences are easily seen here, garage rock, psychedelia, progressive, Rockabilly, country and of course the greatest influence the Blues. I often wonder if there is in any truth in the myth the band sold their souls to the Dark One because such mind numbing talent is almost beyond the pale of reality. I'm telling you get this set no music lover will be disapponited. Absolutely Awesome. Has 4 bonus tracks never released "Baby Come On Home", "Travelling Riverside Blues", "White Summer/Black Mountain Side", and "Hey Hey What Can I Do?" all songs in the blues vein and take their place besides the other greats. There is also a book of liner notes written by Cameron Crowe that have bits of interviews with the band and info on some of the songs. All in all this is a must have for any Zep head or person who apperciates good music.
Can't Get Any Better Than This.......2007-01-20
This is the best boxed set in music history by the greatest rock band in music history. Too bad they did not include The Song Remains the Same and How the West Was Won to it.
My only problem with this set is that my red aussie cattle dog ate the slipcase for Led Zeppelin III and IV and I cannot replace it. So I have a nice set with nice double slipcases and one eaten by my dog. At least she has taste huh? P.S. The cds are still good.
LED ZEPPELIN Collection.......2007-01-10
Simply wonderful. Exactly what I was waiting and hoping for. Excelent package and sound quality.
The best rock band of all time.......2007-01-09
This is the best box set I own. I absolutely love Led Zeppelin and all of their albums are in here. Well worth the money.

Mobster Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel may have laid the physical cornerstones of Las Vegas, but it was Francis Albert Sinatra who gave Sin City its swinging musical soul. Spanning a quarter century, this four-CD-plus-bonus-DVD collection of previously unreleased recordings captures spirited Sinatra shows at the Sands, Caesar's, and Golden Nugget--performances that initially underscore the salutary effect the desert playground had on the singer's muse, then warmly chronicle the autumn years of a triumphant career. A pair of '60s gigs at the Sands (of which Sinatra was part owner) capture an artist still building on his musical legacy in the midst of rock's rising fortunes. The 1961 show turns on the riches of his Capitol years, a musically straightforward set that balances the singer's interpretations of reflective material like "Moonlight in Vermont" and "In the Still of the Night" with upbeat, typically playful renditions of such Sinatra signatures as "Young at Heart," "The Lady Is a Tramp," and "Witchcraft."
But it's the '66 performance that may be the most intriguing for Sinatraphiles: A live workout with Count Basie and his orchestra that eschews the singer's mid-decade comeback hits--and even material from the recent Sinatra-Basie collaboration--in favor of a sassy set that's less summit meeting than swinging soirée, a freewheeling highlight reel from his back catalog that finds singer and band engaging each other with playful, often dizzy abandon. The anthology's '82 and '87 sets from Caesar's and the Golden Nugget, respectively, aren't nearly as musically challenging, showcasing a vocalist and still-boisterous crowd-pleaser who might have stopped breaking musical ground, yet never ceased reveling in the glories--and laughs--he could still bring to the moment. Rat Pack partner in crime Dean Martin stops by Caesar's for some good-natured razzing, while daughter Nancy guests on the set's lovably ditzy take on "Somethin' Stupid." The bonus DVD captures another unreleased rarity, an entire May 1978 Caesar's gig taped by CBS during a period when the singer had largely retreated from the spotlight. While his voice sometimes betrays the ravages of time on these later performances, Sinatra's mercurial humor and indomitable spirit simply spirit won't be denied. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:
Sinatra on stage.......2007-06-27
Very disappointed w/album. Band much too loud, overpowered Sinatra & his swearing was just too much. I've always enjoyed all of Sinatra...he's very special. But this was certainly a big disappointment.
"IT".......2007-05-28
If you have ever wondered what "IT" is, just listen to Sinatra live! The man, simply put, cannot be beat, and this box set proves that without any doubt whatsoever.
You see, I became addicted to Sinatra about ten years ago after hearing one of his songs at the end of a movie (it was like I was hearing music for the first time). About ten thousand albums later I ran across this little gem. I will admit that I was a tad bit skeptical before I bought this set. I thought there wouldn't be much new to hear here. I couldn't have been more mistaken. The sound quality is great, the bands swing, and Sinatra is doing what he does best, being Sinatra. It really doesn't matter how many times you have heard Frank sing these songs. When he sings them live it is like you are hearing them for the first time all over again. First a smile will appear on your face. Next the foot will start tapping out the beat. Before you know it, you will be standing there with a microphone (remote control) putting on the show yourself. You would think that you would have to give up something more than just money to get this kind of satisfaction.
What I am trying to say is buy this set. You will be transported back to a time when optimism ruled America, gas was 15 cents per gallon, and you actually had to have talent to make it in show biz. There is a reason why people will still be listening to Frank in a hundred years and will have never even heard the name Britney Spears, IT! I don't mean that facetiously. I mean that abruptly. Buy the box set, and you will understand.
Would rate it 10 stars if possible!.......2007-05-16
This set is only for Sinatra fanatics. And yes, there are many of us. The tracks include many live dates, including his between-song chats. Frank always credits the composers and/or the arrangers of each tune. What a class act and what a wonderful way to keep him in our lives and hearts. This set is a MUST!!!!!!!!
Sinatra Vegas.......2007-05-13
As a Sinatraaddict all I can say is the cd's were great but the dvd was fantistic
essential for Sinatra fans only.......2007-04-30
This set contains four CD's and 1 DVD; from 1961, 1965, 1982, 1987, and 1978. The two early concerts reveal Sinatra in all of his brilliance; the later ones are hardly worth a listen, with the exception of a few songs here and there.
Sinatra is at his peak in the 1961 and 1966 shows. The real revelation for me in the 1961 performance is the wild galloping version of "On the Road to Mandalay" which is just sensational. The gong at the end really swings. The 1966 concert at the Sands consists of alternative takes of the previously released "Sinatra at the Sands" album. It's interesting to compare and contrast the familiar versions of songs with the versions here. In most cases, they're almost as good and could have easily fit on the originally released album.
While most of the songs are one-offs, for Sinatra fans, it's also interesting to compare the duplicates to see how he gradually began to sing with much more of a kick. "You Make Me Feel So Young" is a perfect example. The arrangement in the 1961 version closely resembles Nelson Riddle's arrangement on "Songs for Swingin' Lovers," though Sinatra swings the original arrangement just a little harder. By 1966, Quincy Jones has rearranged the song to match the drive of the Basie band, and it goes from being a very good performance to a genuinely great one.
I don't think Sinatra ever really got his voice back after he took an early retirement in 1971, and by the late seventies, his voice could no longer do what he needed it to do. It is true that his interpretive skills were as good as ever, but in a live setting you hear him constantly trying to sing around the deficiencies in his voice, and it's distracting. He sounds OK on the less rangy songs where he doesn't have to sustain notes, but I find myself constantly comparing the ballads to earlier better versions, and they don't come off well. There are exceptions. I liked "I Get Along Without You Very Well," surely one of the most beautiful songs ever written which he sings in almost a whisper.
Musically, the DVD is the weakest of the set; the most interesting part of it is watching Sinatra get ready for the concert, and interact with his fans, including a young, obviously awestruck boxer. One thing that's always fascinated me about Sinatra is the contrast between his remarkable singing and his occasionally churlish behavior, on stage and off. Some of that churlishness is evident here as when he takes rude and mostly unfunny shots at a variety of show business folks and long-dead gossip columnist.
If you're a big fan of Sinatra, this is a worthwhile purchase. If you're a casual fan or you want to see what the fuss is about, buy the much cheaper "Sinatra at the Sands" and go on from there. If you want to see Sinatra in concert, see his superior Royal Festival Hall concert in London from just before his retirement, also available on DVD.

As the music and legacies of various rock legends--Elvis, the Beatles, the Stones, Dylan, the Beach Boys, Bruce Springsteen--have been thoroughly celebrated, analyzed, and overanalyzed by rock critics, fans, and reissuers, the Four Seasons--New Jersey's premiere pop act before Springsteen or Bon Jovi--remained grossly overlooked and underappreciated. To the uninformed, their pre-Beatles roots--stretching back to the doo-wop era--or sure slickness might have fostered the misconception they were somehow less "hip." Musicians, however, knew better. Dylan, Springsteen, Neil Diamond, Billy Joel, and Brian Wilson among them thoroughly understood and appreciated the Seasons' vision, centered around their harmonies, Frankie Valli's vocal virtuosity, and the stellar work of songwriter-organist Bob Gaudio who, with producer Bob Crewe, created the now-classic Seasons sound, which withstood Beatlemania and everything afterward. The recent Tony Award-winning musical Jersey Boys helped sweep aside those decades of neglect by reintroducing the Four Seasons to a new audience. Rhino's magnificent package--four CDs on 84 tracks and a DVD of rare performances--explores the music that inspired it all, beginning with their 1962 debut hit "Sherry," through magnificent, timeless mini-dramas like "Dawn," "Rag Doll," and "C'mon Marianne" and tongue-in-cheek efforts like their version of Dylan's "Don't Think Twice (It's All Right)" by the "Wonder Who." Along with various rarities, the collection includes Valli's solo hits. "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" and "Swearin' to God" reaffirm his stature as one of that era's great vocalists. The DVD includes performances from a 1963 Steve Allen show and a 1971 appearance on Britain's Top of the Pops. --Rich Kienzle

A master class in the legacy of The Four Seasons........2007-07-17
This is all you will ever need. This has everything you want.
"Jersey Beat" is a perfect box set covering the careers of The Four Seasons and Frankie Valli. Like many people, after seeing the remarkable "Jersey Boys", I sought out some Four Seasons music, and ordered THIS.
Jackpot.
All important (and many peripherally interesting) songs are here, remastered as good as they're probably ever going to get. Big hits, B-Sides, those weird "Wonder Who" songs...they sound glorious.
The three CD's cover "Sherry" all the way to an unusual Four Seasons-Beach Boys "duet." And it's one heck of a ride. Those early singles have not lost an ounce of their power. The 70's songs...like "Who Loves You" and "December 1963"...also hold up surprisingly well.
Classic singles abound..."Walk Like A Man", "Dawn", "Rag Doll"...even slightly cheesy material like the solo "Swearin' To God" comes to life here. I discovered other tunes to love...like "Alone" and "Opus 17".
The fourth disc is a 40-minute video compilation of a bunch of their songs, performed on various TV shows over the 60's and 70's. I promise you that you will laugh out loud watching the strange, stilted choreography, the hilarious haircuts and riotous "fashions" of the era.
But those songs still hold up.
A terrific, thick booklet accompanies the set, with great liner notes.
This box set is a master class in the legacy of The Four Seasons.

I know I am not using this particular forum for its intended purpose, but I hope I can be forgiven. I am writing because I want to find a website or message board where I can communicate with Frankie Valli/Four Seasons fans. I have a particular question that I want to be able to post to a large number of fans at one time. So can someone please provide a website address or link where I can find such a message board. Thanks!
Five star collection, with one gripe.......2007-07-14
"Jersey Beat...The Music of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons" is a wonderful, thoughtfully put together box that finally gives the boys their long overdue credit. My only gripe with the box is that Disc One contains far too much mono where I know stereo exists, since I have owned other Rhino collections. At least they found the single version of "Save It For Me" rather than the underdub that appeared on their "Anthology" and the "Definitive Pop Collection". And the single version of "Swearin' To God" is the original single master, not the crudely done edit of the LP master that was on the other collections (where is Frankie Valli's "Close-Up" album on CD, with the 10- minute version of "Swearin' To God"????) And they finally found the stereo "Let's Hang On". But I have stereo versions of "Rag Doll" , "Walk Like A Man", "Big Girls Don't Cry", and other early hits, on earlier Rhino discs, as well as the Curb reissues of their albums from the early 90s. Why doesn't a label like Warner Brothers do proper tape vault research? (Rhino is now for all intents and purposes, Warner Strategic Marketing) Otherwise, this is probably the best compilation of their work I have ever heard, and, stereo quibbling aside, everyone should own it, and even if you're not a fan, after hearing this amazing collection, you will be.
A feast for your listening and viewing pleasure.......2007-06-25
It is all here in one place, the greatest of the 4 Seasons. Enjoy 3 CDs with the best audio quality that I have heard to date. The mixing of the vocals is excellent, just as you remembered them on all of the 4 Seasons' hit and b-sides. Actually any of the b-sides here could just as well been a hit. There is something wonderful in the order of the play list of the songs in this compilation. They flow together beautifully. You'll experience hours of listening enjoyment. It is also very interesting to see how the music of the Seasons has matured over the years, while the early songs, such as Sherry, still having a "spine-tingling" timeless impact on the listener. Close you eyes and enjoy the past several decades of beautiful music. Do your self a huge favor and listen to the cut "Hope and Glory" several times. It is Bob Gaudio's and Frankie Valli sharing the lead. This could easily become a big hit single for the Seasons in this decade, given the proper airplay. Also be sure to treasure the DVD which takes you from the original Seasons with Nick Massi and then the fabulous Joe Long, through the later group members such as Don Ciccone and Gerry Polci. I promise that you will be thrilled that you purchased this extraordinary collection.
YES!!!!.......2007-06-24
Let me start by I was born in Jersey in 1983. But I grew up to the sounds of WCBSFM 101.1 from NYC. This of course included many of The Four Season's Hits. I have an original vinyl copy of Gold Vault of Hits that, for a while, constantly played in my parent's turntable. I love The Four Seasons. This collection should be in every home in America (and around the world). It allows me to discover even more songs that until now I didn't know existed. BUY THIS COLLECTION. As far as I'm concerned, it's a steal at this price.

GREAT ITEM.......2007-06-27
I ORDERED THIS ITEM FOR MY SON WHO LOVES DISNEY MUSIC. IT CAME IN GREAT CONDITION AND QUICKLY. LISTENING TO THE CD,S BRINGS BACK MEMORIES OF MY YOUNGER DAYS.
Slow shipping & Minor Damage.......2007-05-14
My kids (2 & 3 yrs.) like the music that they have heard before. There are many songs included that are less popular. If your kids are like mine, you will be hitting the "next" button frequently. I ended up burning a cd of the songs that they liked. This worked out well.
The Shipping was fairly slow. It took about two weeks (10 business days) to arrive through standard mail. This probably wouldn't have been so bad, but most of the other orders that I have placed through Amazon have arrived in 5 business days or less.
The product itself seemed to be damaged during manufacture. All of the CDs were lose in the cases. It appears that they didn't seat properly, and during the seating process the tines in the center of the case that hold the CDs in place were broken. None of the discs were damaged or scratched.
Grrrrrreat!.......2007-05-03
This is the best product for every Disney junkie, i LOVE it! It has just about every classic song ever made. I love it, and the price is VERY reasonable for 125 songs... it's a MUCH better deal than buying the other disney classic cd's individualy...so BUY IT!! like tigger says: ITS "GRRRRREEEAAAT!!!"
This CD is Awesome.......2007-04-12
It has all the good disney songs sung like in the movies with the original singers. My daughter loves it.
Love It!.......2007-03-10

Customer Reviews:
AWESOME!.......2007-07-10
If you enjoy gospel music -- YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET! Elvis' incredible voice is perfect for the soulful lyrics. Plus he picks up the tempo on many of them making them sound more like rock. All of my favorites are on this 3CD set - so I'm very very happy that I bought it. I highly recommend it!
This CD is great!.......2007-07-07
Elvis sings gospel songs like no other! Some of the songs are a litte rough but you have to realize some songs were recorded in his home or at the studio while he is just playing around. The first disc is more of the released songs while some of the songs on the other CD's are live versions or unreleased versions with him laughing and talking. I thoroughly love this set!
Great gospel album!.......2007-07-05
