Given their overarching history, Fleetwood Mac's 15-years-after studio reunion seems as unlikely as their initial, era-defining nova of success. Even cynics leery it's just another geezerfest payday should find this stripped-down edition of le Mac Classique (singer/songwriter/keyboardist Christine McVie opted out) bristling with a wealth of fresh, ambitious musical ideas. The responsibility for that creative renaissance rests squarely on the delicate shoulders of Lindsey Buckingham, more involved and motivated than he's been in any Mac project since the monumental Tusk. His crypto-folk structures and adventurous, Brian Wilson-inspired sonic textures are anything but predictable, illuminating "Miranda," "Red Rover," "Come," and even the mildly pedantic harangue "Murrow Turning Over in His Grave." With Christine McVie's poignant pop sense out of the mix, Stevie Nicks steps up with solid songcraft that rises beyond "Ilume"'s expected folk-mysticism to encompass other melancholy, age-defying feats like "Silver Girl," "Smile at You," "Goodbye Baby," and the title track. That duet with Buckingham argues that their vaunted creative axis may have lost its personal friction only to spin ever freer. And, like firm ground beneath the feet, it's too easy to take for granted the legendary Mick Fleetwood/John McVie rhythm section that gave the band its very name. Cut to its core dozen tracks, it's an album that easily stands comparison to their mega-platinum past. --Jerry McCulley

Argentina-born, California-based Gustavo Santaolalla helped shape the rock en Español movement by producing Mexican bands Molotov and Café Tacuba , and Colombian singer Juanes. In the late 1990s he made a switch to soundtracks, working on well-received albums for Amores Perros and The Motorcycle Diaries. His instrumental contributions to Ang Lee's tale of two cowboys in love are acoustic guitar-based and, let's face it, a bit on the sonic-wallpaper side.

The vocal tracks, on the other hand, are uniformly lovely, even if the selection of interpreters falls on the predictable side. Linda Ronstadt, Steve Earle, Willie Nelson, and Mary McBride on the soundtrack to a contemporary Western? What a shock! Still, they're all wonderful and Santaolalla wrote at least a couple of classic-sounding country ballads ("A Love That Will Never Grow Old," sung by Emmylou Harris, and "No One's Gonna Love You Like Me," sung by Mary McBride). And don't miss Teddy Thompson and Rufus Wainwright's sweet cover of Roger Miller's 1964 "King of the Road." --Elisabeth Vincentelli

4 out of 5 stars Axe Rufus Wainwright, and it would be 5 stars.......2007-06-13

This album is a mixture of the instrumental theme, which is incredibly beautiful and haunting, and some very solid country songs. I was surprised by how good the other songs were (you still have to like country music, though). There are only two songs that I don't like at all, and those are the two by Rufus Wainwright - one a cover of "King of the Road" (originally by Roger Miller). They are great demonstrations of him at his most nasal and whiny. It sounds like he is a French guy holding his nose and singing too slow. It's too bad, because they are good songs otherwise. I guess if you like him, you're golden; but I can't stand these versions. Fortunately, the rest of the disc is really good.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, it's one of the best albums I own.......2007-06-03

I listened to it over and over and over last year. Such quality all 'round.

5 out of 5 stars Brokeback Mountain.......2007-05-13

The product is what I expected. It arrived on time and in the condition advertised.

3 out of 5 stars A matter of taste..........2007-05-08

I didn't really pay a lot of attention to the music in the film, except for in the most intense of scenes. Perhaps this is why I was so, completely, disappointed with this soundtrack. I felt that if it did even half of what the film did for me it would be a worthy buy. My friends, this soundtrack is shat. It's mostly country and folk, which I am plainly not into. If you like these things then check this out - if not, turn away.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect, just like the movie..........2007-04-21

It is so wonderful, relaxing..if you`re thinking in buying...Just do it!

1 out of 5 stars Absolute Garbage!.......2007-07-09

Lindsey really put the nail in the coffin of Fleetwwod Mac with this one. I've been listening to FM since 1970, and I can take their ups and downs. Lindsey first tried to destroy them with Tusk. They actually synthesized Stevie's voice on this junk! Screaming guitars, poor playing, and poor recording make this a gigantic dissappointment.
I love Stevies music and even she sounds terrible on this. But I recently saw her in concert and she still sounds great! So the recording, synthesizing and overdubbing (or whatever) ruined even her on this abomination. I have to think LB did this on purpose (he produced the album, right?) in attenmpt to put the Mac (and Stevie) out of business to make more room for his mediocre solo efforts. Unfortunately, he may just have finally succeeded.

Rubbish.

5 out of 5 stars Fleetwood Mac .......2007-06-02

This has fast became my favorite Fleetwood Mac album. I love the mix between Stevie and Lindsay. I feel like this album really shows what Lindsay can do (this album has the most songs from him that I actually like) and showcases what we have come to expect from Stevie. It is quite different from the other Fleetwood Mac albums, but I feel like that is what makes it stand out to me. They have changed through out the years and continue to make great music.

5 out of 5 stars Fleetwood Mac - Their Best Since Tusk.......2007-03-07

"Say You Will" was the band's first studio album in 8 years and the first to feature both Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham in 16 years. The results are what is certainly one of Fleetwood Mac's best releases and their most creative album since "Tusk" in the late 70's. Some will be disappointed at the absence of Christine McVie from this project, but for me, she was always my least favorite songwriter in the band, and is not missed that much. Her departure opens the door for the creative juices of Buckingham and Nicks with Buckingham especially turning in one of his most passionate performances. The songs are equally divided (8 a piece) between Buckingham and Nicks. Buckingham's contributions are just about all top notch and seem to lean heavily in the direction of his more experimental solo works than previous material with Fleetwood Mac. The opening track "What's The World Coming To" is a great way to start. "Murrow Turning Over In His Grave" is an odd, yet ultimately satisfying comment on society. "Miranda" has a killer chorus and is instantly memorable. "Come" is a great song with great background vocals on the chorus from Stevie and an absolutely incindiary guitar solo by Buckingham. The solo is probably the closest thing to heavy metal that Buckingham has ever recorded, drenched in distortion, Buckingham makes the guitar scream in a style akin to no one else. "Steal Your Heart Away" is a nice acoustic ballad. "Bleed To Love Her" first appeared on the live "The Dance" album and is included here as a studio track. "Say Goodbye" is another great acoustic track. Stevie Nicks material is also very good, although I don't think it quite reaches the highs of Buckingham's. "Illume" is prime Stevie about September 11. It is both insightful and moving. "Running Through The Garden" is a great rocker, with yet another outstanding guitar solo from Buckingham. "Silver Girl" is great little ballad, and the album closer "Goodbye Baby" is a Stevie Nicks lament done as only she can. The rest of the tracks on the album are all solid as well for the most part. Probably two of my least favorites are the ones they choose to release as singles. "Peacekeeper" is ok, but does not stand up to Buckingham's other material on the disc and the title track "Say You Will" is just kind of bland. Overall though this is a very good album that sees Fleetwood Mac taking more chances with their music than ever before. Fans of Buckingham's solo albums should really eat this one up. For fans of more straight ahead pop Fleetwood Mac this album may be a bit of a challenge, but if you don't mind a classic band that is trying to push the envelope with new material, this is a great one. To me this is a must own Fleetwood Mac album, and may be the best of their career.

5 out of 5 stars The Third Best Album They Ever Made..........2006-11-21

Fleetwood Mac have been around in one form or another, since 1967 - and 36 years later, they prove they have still got 'it' - releasing their best album since 1979s "Tusk".

This album has a very different sound and feel to previous Mac efforts, most likely due to the absence of Mac veteran Christine McVie, who provided the soft-pop rock that Mac has relied on since the early 1970s. However, this leaves Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks to go back to their early Buckingham Nicks rock/folk roots, and they pull it off surprisingly well.

Buckingham is at his commercial best with tracks like "Whats the World Coming to?" and "Steal Your Heart Away", and the wonderfully weird "Murrow Turning Over in his Grave" and "Red Rover" are welcome additions. Stevie Nicks commits some of her best songs to a Mac album ever - "Illume (911)" "Thrown Down" and "Running Through the Garden" are clear examples of this. Both artists also submit stunning acoustic tracks like the closers "Say Gooodbye" and "Goodbye Baby".

Although this album is very different to any Mac release, it displays a new Mac, a Mac that can still push boundaries, and not fall into the trap of so many other classic acts, who never venture into new teritory - something Fleetwood Mac have never been afraid to do. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars The best album of 2003.......2006-10-25

Fleetwood Mac returned once again in the fall of 2003, and not a moment too soon. The current pop/rock scene had been such a vast wasteland of commercialized nonentities that an album of refreshing, complex, and adult popular music was just what the doctor ordered. The re-addition of Lindsey Buckingham (his first studio album the band since 1987) and Stevie Nicks (her first since 1990) into the fold seems to have rejuvenated the old hit machine, and their knack for crafting memorable, hook-filled pop/rock (brimming with thoughtful lyrics, melodic surprises, and impossibly tight harmonies) remains firmly intact. Only the absence of longtime hit-maker Christine McVie prevents SAY YOU WILL from being a full throttle reunion, but Buckingham and Nicks almost have enough songs and ideas to fill the void.

It had been over a decade since Buckingham's last solo album (1992's criminally underrated OUT OF THE CRADLE), and his contributions to SAY YOU WILL prove that his immeasurable talents as a producer, singer, songwriter, and guitarist have not diminished in the least. I personally feel that the near-epic rock opus "Come" sounds a little too similar to Buckingham's own 1992 composition "This is the Time" (from OUT OF THE CRADLE), but the rest of his material is first-rate. The revved rockers "What's the World Coming To" and "Peacekeeper" sit down perfectly next to the eccentric masterpieces "Murrow Turning Over in His Grave," "Miranda," and "Red Rover," which are certainly the most refreshingly avant-garde tracks that the band has recorded since 1979's TUSK. Buckingham's tracks are always tuneful and surprising, with the genteel "Steal Your Heart Away," a studio version of the beautiful "Bleed to Love Her" (originally performed during THE DANCE tour), and the bittersweet ballad "Say Goodbye" all ranking among the best compositions in his long career.

Stevie Nicks has been more active than Buckingham in her recent career, although her work on SAY YOU WILL is no less impressive. Nicks delivers a couple of her trademark incoherent musings with "Illume" and "Smile at You," both of which become instantly memorable due to the passion and urgency in which they are performed. Nicks' immediately likeable title track is super-slick, her "Throw Down" is a fun mid-tempo number in the same vein as 1982's "Gypsy," and she also delivers two beautiful new ballads with "Silver Girl" and "Goodbye Baby." The best of Nicks' material, however, are the rockers "Everybody Finds Out," "Destiny Rules," and the fantastic "Running Through the Garden," all of which allow the singer to rock out in a way she hasn't done since 1981's "Edge of Seventeen."

If there is a problem with the album, it would be that it never really seems to merge as a whole as much as I would like it too. For example, the album TUSK was all over the map, but it still managed to pull together into a cohesive unit. Nearly all of the tunes on SAY YOU WILL are terrific and the album's pacing and sequencing work far better than I initially suspected, but I still can't help but wish that Buckingham and Nicks had collaborated a bit more together on at least a couple tracks for unity's sake. And that is definitely where Christine McVie is missed the most, as her consistently calm material was quite often the glue that held it all together.

Still, SAY YOU WILL is easily one of the best albums of the decade. Fans responded to the disc, sending it all the way to #3 on the Hot 200. It was quickly certified Gold in sales.

3 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Re-Creation of Over-Exposed Legrand Material.......2006-02-10

Michel Legrand is one the biggest artists of music entertainment, a sensitive composer and arranger.

Here you'll find a correct selection of Legrand's material with unnecessarily new arrangements though with an impeccable performance.

Many of the songs in the repertoire are still available in CDs you can find here @Amazon and the best Legrand is the original Legrand.

This album stands only for those who doesn't care about original takes and wishes just for a selection of the best Legrand.

5 out of 5 stars "one of the greatest film composers of the 20th Century ~ Michel Legrand".......2005-10-26

Silva Screen has released a collection that will set you on your ear "The Essential Michel Legrand Film Music Collection"...Legrand's score sets the tone and mood you experience a sense of power and freedom, so exhilarating...Legrand's genius in composition and orchestration, puts the listener smack dab in the middle of each film he scores as it serves up a generous helping of heaven for all "film-score-buff" collectors

Michel Legrand was born in Paris on February 24th, 1932...attended the Paris Conservatory Progressing...worked in various jazz bands, later a staff arranger and composer...an orchestrator in the '50s...scored films in the early '60s with "THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG" (1964)..."THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR" (1968)..."THE GO-BETWEEN" (1970)..."SUMMER OF '42" (1971)..."THE THREE MUSKETEERS" (1973)...and three Oscars from the Academy Awards for "THE WINDMILLS OF YOUR MIND" for best music and original song in 1969 , "SUMMER OF '42" for best original song and original dramatic score in 1972... "YENTL for best music and original song score in 1984...then in 2003 nominated for Broadway's Tony Awards for Best Original Music Score for the Musical "Amour", there's no letting up for this hard working composer.

The Flemish Radio Orchestra featuring conductor composer Michel Legrand on piano and harpsichord, Philippe Chayeb on bass, Thierry Chauvet on drums and Bruno Caviglia on guitar...all in all did a magnificent job in bringing the music of a composer who wrote for a multitude of films, receiving recognition from the industry and fans which is long over-due ~ his work is in constant demand.

This collection contains an overlay of each cue in Legrand's distinctive style of legendary scoring ~ the man who made this possible, a tremendous asset to every project he undertakes is Reynold da Silva [executive producer of the album] ~ symphonic suites with full orchestra fullfilling the "film-score-buffs" cravings for more of the same, just the way we like 'em!

5 out of 5 stars Available at retailers for about $18.......2006-12-21

Excellent collection - but there are re-sellers listed here that are selling this for as much $50 or $60. Yikes, most major retailers are selling this complete set for $18 - so beware.

    5 out of 5 stars A classic compilation.......2006-10-07

This collection is one of my most treasured possessions. (My father gave me the original 5-album set in the 70's when it was originally released on vinyl.)

This is the definitive collection of Scott Joplin's work. Richard Zimmerman provides wonderful performances that accurately reflect Joplin's intentions. (As evidence beyond my personal opinion, I submit the recent releases of digital recordings made from Joplin's piano rolls.)

A few points to consider regarding negative comments you may encounter in other reviews:
    * This is a digital recording from an analog master. Lack of quality in the recording does not imply a lackluster performance.
    * This is a complete collection. Some similarity is due to Joplin re-exploring melodic themes. But some is due to the fact that these are "rags". One might as well complain that all 50's doo-wop (or all 70's disco) sounds the same.
    * Many pieces of the period exhibit formal musical structures, such as the marches of John Phillips Sousa. (Both Sousa and Joplin performed at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis.) Actually, Joplin is responsible for extending the formal boundaries of ragtime to concert waltzes (Bethena) and opera (A Guest of Honor, Treemonisha)
    * This is probably one of the few collections which will include selections from "Treemonisha". It is my understanding that after the initial release, one of Joplin's descendants made a copyright claim that was upheld in court. (I presume the issue was that Joplin had to finance "Treemonisha" himself, and therefore the customary performance clearances did not cover those selections.)

For ragtime students and enthusiasts, this is a "must-have" collection at a very affordable price.

    1 out of 5 stars A dis-service to Joplin.......2006-02-01

Sadly, the only virtue this set possesses is completeness.

The pianist does not play Joplin's pieces "as written", the piano is of poor quality, and not properly in tune.

This is emphatically NOT the set to buy. A far better set, beautifully annotated and well played on a good concert grand piano, is the complete works played by Guido Nielsen on the Basta Label.

This set is a dis-service to Joplin and his music. He deserves better, and gets it elsewhere.

    5 out of 5 stars Unique .......2004-10-19

I have several cd sets of Joplin's music: Rifkin, Arpo, Nielsen, and Zimmerman. All have their excellent qualities. What sets Zimmerman's set apart is the inclusion of excerpts from Joplin's opera, Treemonisha---especially "A Real Slow Drag." Why the other sets do not include excerpts from Treemonisha, I don't know---because they are some of his most beautiful and joyful pieces of music. Of course, you can hear the orchestrated version of Treemonisha in the Houston Grand Opera recording, and it is spectacular. But Zimmerman's piano version, especially of "A Real Slow Drag," is not to be missed.

    5 out of 5 stars Great set.......2001-10-16

I guess this will be a rather one sided review. I have been a fan of Scott Joplin since I first learned to play a piano.

I was shocked to see that one reviewer thought it all sounded the same. How silly. All of Frank Sinatra's music sounds like Frank Sinatra. All of Led Zeppelin sounds like Led Zeppelin. So, if the songs were drastically different, I would question if the same author composed them. As it is, though, each song on this set is fantastic!!

I don't know that I have heard of Richard Zimmerman, and I was a little leary as to what I would be getting, I certainly was impressed. Without a doubt the best renditions of "Weeping Willow" and "Bethena" I have heard, and at least a dozen songs I didn't know Joplin wrote.

Without a doubt, this album is fantastic. A very good price, as well.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Irresistible.......2005-07-29

From beginning to end this CD is pure delight. A great recording has great music, a great performance, and great sound; this one scores on all three counts.

Rodgers and Hammerstein's musicals dominated Broadway in the 1940s and 1950s, and American musical theater has produced no more consistently eloquent and durable voice than Richard Rodgers. From his fertile genius flowed a surprising number of memorable songs, many of which have passed into and become an accepted and beloved part of modern American culture.

This well-filled CD (77:36) features symphonic arrangements (all but two by Robert Russell Bennett) of the music from Oklahoma (1943), Carousel (1945), State Fair (1945), South Pacific (1949), The King and I (1951), Flower Drum Song (1958), and The Sound of Music (1959). All the great tunes are here in suites from each musical that average 10-12 minutes in length. The arrangements are expert: rich, varied, and colorful. The performances are polished, idiomatic, and irresistible; Kunzel and this orchestra are thorough masters of this kind of material. And Telarc's sound (recorded 1991) is state-of-the-art (engineer Michael Bishop deserves to take a bow).

In short, there's nothing here to cloud your listening pleasure (the only quibble I can imagine is that some of your favorites may not last long enough), so it's hard for me to envision anyone with ears and a taste for music who wouldn't enjoy this CD. Warmly recommended. Finally, if you like this one as much as I do, you might want to know that the same team has produced a companion volume, the Lerner & Lowe Songbook for Orchestra.

5 out of 5 stars "Some Enchanted Evening" with Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops.......2003-12-26

Erich Kunzel's Rodgers and Hammerstein anthology with the Cincinatti Pops Orchestra is one of the best and most ravishing instrumental Rodgers and Hammerstein albums of all time. With sumptuous arrangements and warm, natural Telarc recording, this glorious 77-minute CD presents sweeping, melodic arrangements of over 60 Rodgers and Hammerstein selections, spanning eight scores, and Kunzel allows the Pops to play with a characterful and polished understanding of the Rodgers and Hammerstein idiom. The disc is enough to cheer you up on a dull day and make you smile, and it might even want to make you feel like a convert to Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals.

This CD has all the scores arranged chronologically. The OKLAHOMA! suite that opens this disc promises a feast for the senses, Kunzel ably evokes the territory's "bright, golden haze" in the way he conducts the various excerpts, until you feel the atmosphere of the country charm of the show, and the love-affair between Curly and Laurey. Then, in CAROUSEL, he ably evokes the pathos of this tragic R&H masterwork, especially in the truncated Waltz, but he leads a wonderfully melodic "June is Bustin' Out All Over" and a devotional "You'll Never Walk Alone." Although this suite does not include Billy's pivotal Soliloquy, it includes "If I Loved You" as an expression of his love for Julie, and within minutes you could be soaked in the ups and downs of the show's mood.

After a brief STATE FAIR suite, with sweeping renditions of "It Might As Well Be Spring" and "It's a Grand Night for Singing", we are brought into the disc's showstopping highlights. These highlights are the excerpts from SOUTH PACIFIC, THE KING AND I, and THE SOUND OF MUSIC. But yet Kunzel conducts the rest of the disc until the various suites amount to a series of showstoppers. These three suites present wonderfully-arranged versions of their many familiar classic songs, with well-played solos. The SOUTH PACIFIC suite presents the songs in chronological order, yet preserves the atmosphere of the show at the same time. Kunzel ably brings out the romance in "Some Enchanted Evening" and "Younger than Springtime," and contrasts it with the exotic and dreamlike "Bali Hai'i" and the comic "There is Nothing like a Dame" and "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair". Although the suite ends quietly with a reprise of "Dites-Moi" rather than the reprise of "Some Enchanted Evening," within minutes we are swept into the KING AND I suite. Kunzel ably brings out the Oriental pathos in this score, and he captures the warmth of Anna's rapport with the King's Siamese children in "Getting to Know You", and with the King himself in "Shall We Dance." There is also romance in the love ballads "I Have Dreamed" and "We Kiss in a Shadow." Similarly, in the selection from THE SOUND OF MUSIC, Kunzel conducts this until the orchestra soaks itself in the atmosphere of this Austrian R&H score. This SOUND OF MUSIC suite has more of a feel of the score compared to the bonus track on Sony's reissued version of the Broadway recording. You can almost feel as if you are following the progress of the Trapp family and how it lifts its spirits with the joy of music. Kunzel gives us a soaring version of the title song, and spirited versions of "Do-Re-Mi" and "My Favourite Things." He balances it with the open-air quality of "Edelweiss" and "The Lonely Goatherd." Although this suite could have included "Something Good," the love ballad written for the film, the three recollections of the songs that were cut from the movie only last for a while. And, the towering version of "Climb Every Mountain" crowns this portion of the disc, and this sumptuously-produced recording. But, I should also mention the infectuous FLOWER DRUM SONG medley, where Kunzel turns this underrated score into a work of art, until it convinces you to buy the cast recording. And, don't forget about the brief CINDERELLA WALTZ, too, when Kunzel conducts it magically, until you feel like you are in the company of Cinderella and the Prince. He is able to show how this R&H score marked a comeback for R&H after the failiures of Me and Juliet, and Pipe Dream.

Overall, this glorious Rodgers and Hammerstein recording is guarunteed to make you want to pucker your lips out for a whistle or sing along (to paraphrase another revew for Kunzel's Disney Spectacular disc) - even if this recording is music only, and as long as you know the words to the songs (and you might know a large handful of them already.) There is always a certain magic in this fine CD that makes you feel like you're sitting in the theatre watching these musicals, until it makes you feel like it is truly, to borrow two R&H song titles, "Some Enchanted Evening" and "Something Wonderful" to be in Kunzel's company for this R&H offering. It would certainly be one recording that could make you feel willing to buy the complete cast recordings of the shows. And I guaruntee that it will make you feel willing to pull out your existing copies of the cast recordings to listen to them again. I also guaruntee that it will be a cornerstone in any Rodgers and Hammerstein collection, just as it is in mine. Recommended heartily to any Rodgers and Hammerstein enthusiast and to fans of Erich Kunzel's work. And, you can play it while reading the Richard Rodgers biography, Musical Stages, until Rodgers himself would count this as his favourite disc in the afterlife.

By the way, most of the arrangements for the suites on this CD were done by the veteran R&H orchestrator Robert Russell Bennett, and it surely adds to the appeal of this recording. This itself is enough to amount to the icing on the cake, since Kunzel conducts them well on here, and since this recording still allows the suites to have the original theatrical atmosphere. And, although this recording is like the Mauceri collection of the Rodgers & Hammerstein overtures in compiling orchestral suites of Rodgers & Hammerstein, I think that I like the Kunzel recording even more because Kunzel has more magic in his conducting of these suites.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2003-04-08

This is one of the best Erich Kunzel/Cincinnati Pops collections we own! A must for Rodgers and Hammerstein fans, too.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Arrangments.......2001-09-02

This is a first rate album with great arrangments and orchestrations. If you're a Rodgers and Hammerstein fan, you can't afford to miss this specatacular album

      5 out of 5 stars INTERESTING SHOW.......2007-01-24

If you saw this show it is a must for your collection

4 out of 5 stars In my own lifetime.......2002-03-31

This has to be one of my all time favorite cast recordings. Although as a Broadway musical it didnt have nearly the success of Fiddler it is non the less an excellent recording, and it did win at least TWO Tonys.(I understand the one that Hal Linden won was one of the reasons that he got the job in "Barney Miller".
Of course the best number on the recording is "In my own lifetime",and "Sons" is just slightly chauvinistic but....
Hal Linden is of course magical, Keene Curtis does how many roles and Paul Hecht as the oldest son steals the show in his number with Jill Clayburgh. I do know of one piece of music that was cut from the show that I would love to get my hands on,called "Its just a map". Well worth a listen!

4 out of 5 stars Tevye had rich relatives!.......2002-02-22

Bock and Harnick may not have reached the heights they did in Fiddler but they have produced a forgotten treasure. The album is better than the show. The songs and emotions are clearer and more effective when you don't have to bother with the labored book which is heavy on European politics and 18th century bond trading. Hal Linden is in fine voice and surprisingly we even get to hear a young Jill Clayburgh vocalize.

5 out of 5 stars oh the misery of it al!.......2002-02-07

quiktime has sequestered the resources to hear your samples, and of course, it won't play them.
      try arguing with it..

maybe you could provide us chickuns with alternate media players?? uh, how about it?

5 out of 5 stars A muscular, vibrant score with many musical shadings.......1999-08-25

This is the most "through-composed" of the musicals of Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, as befits the 18th/19th century European setting. Hal Linden's Tony Award-winning performance comes through loud and clear as the partriarch of the family, as does fellow Tony-winner Keene Curtis in a variety of roles. "Sons," "Rothschild and Sons," "Pleasure and Privilege" are standouts. A neglected gem of the musical theater.

5 out of 5 stars Selections from the Greatest Voice of the Last Hundred Years.......2007-03-13

Mario Lanza was, arguably, the greatest tenor and greatest singer of this and the last century. It is difficult to appreciate him without listening to a variety of selections. This collection has some of his best recordings and exhibits the versatility and variety that he possessed that permitted him to "crossover" from opera to popular music with a ease.

I recommend this for those who already know Lanza to some extent but want to go into more depth and understand his marvelous skills.

      5 out of 5 stars A Must Have .......2006-12-12

I had forgotten what a beautiful voice Mario Lanza had. This collection contains opera and pop selections that exhibit the power yet sweetness of his voice. Fortunately, we have his CD's and videos so we can remember and listen to his gorgeous, vibrant voice and personality. I highly recommend this collection along with his wonderful movies, especially The Great Caruso.

5 out of 5 stars The Mario Lanza Collection.......2006-11-10

I had forgotten just how beautiful a voice from the past was. It is a wonderful collection

4 out of 5 stars The MARIO LANZA Collection.......2006-08-19

extract from most important LPs. Brilliant sound quality from RCA. Also included are soundtrack recordings from some of his movies. The are several reissues from Mario Lanza but this one is a collection you should have.

      5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL!!!!!.......2005-10-19

The Mario Lanza Collection is a three CD set and it has 61 songs and they all sound great. The mastering on this set is excellent and the song choice is very very good. It would have been perfect if they added a forth CD with more Arias, Italian songs and Sacred Arias. BUT still this set is a great introduction to Lanza. Lanza's voice was powerful and beautiful; if you are a fan of great singing, you will love Lanza. Highlights on this CD set are; Be my Love, Because your Mine, Serenade, With a Song in My Heart, Temptation, The Lord's Prayer, Ciribirbin, O Solo Mio, Ariverducci Roma, and on and on. They are many many great songs on this set, and I highly recommend it.
