If you enjoy running to cadence, this is a good buy, They are easy to understand and help get you pumped up for a good run. The cadences don't flow from one to the next as smoothly as I would like but still rythmic. A good buy.

This is one of Alice's most oddball albums. He adopts one of his weirdest characters, a pseudo military persona.......complete with tons of rouge and mascara. The pictures from this tour have him looking really...... well....strange. Alice had once again fallen off the wagon in a big way by this album and was having problems with substance abuse again (mainly alcohol). This may be why the album is so short, clocking in at just over 30 minutes. With a cover song and a live version of a previously released track there is only about an EP's worth of new material to be found here. All of the musicians he had previously worked with were gone as this album features an entirely new crop of no name musicians adopted as his special forces band. This is not necessarily a bad thing however, as the new hired guns add a vitality and energy to the mix that had been missing for a while in his career. By this time Alice's album sales had plummeted too (I don't think this one even cracked the top 100). There are some really good tracks though. The opener "Special Forces" is a killer rock track with it's "who do you think we are" chorus. It had been a few albums since Alice wrote a transvestite song, so he throws us "Prettiest Cop On The Block" a song about a cross dressing policeman. It is pretty funny stuff. A live version of one of Alice's all time best songs "Generation Landslide" appears here with renewed energy and a few additional lyrics. "You're A Movie" is one of Cooper's funniest songs about a military general who.....well it's hard to describe, you would need to hear it. The final track "Vicious Rumors" is another heavy rock track that ends with a reprise of the "who do you think we are" chorus from the title track. The rest of the disc is average Cooper Musically the album continues down the new wave / punk path of "Flush The Fashion". This album is worth owning for Cooper fans, I just wish it was not so short.

To begin with, whatever else one might say about this album, it has to be acknowledged that the import price for this disc, considering that it is only 32 minutes long, makes it a somewhat overpriced EP.

Meanwhile, this somewhat forgotten quasi-gem from Alice sits comfortably between the New Wave / post-Hollywood production of "Flush the Fashion" and his most strongly novelty-influenced album, "Zipper Catches Skin". Generally, there's a stripped down sensibility musically, and less purely goofy lyrics.

Partly, this is due to the opening "Who Do You Think We Are," which presents a rather oblique look, perhaps, at special forces. The music is very stripped down--no, extremely stripped down compared to "Welcome to my Nightmare" or "Goes to Hell" or all of his later metal albums--it's as if Alice is getting in touch with his inner garage here. Vocally, Alice provides his usual range of dark sneers, wide-eyed irony, and generally witty lyrics. Certainly a promising start.

"Seven & Seven Is" (a cover) rattles along continuously with a snare drum, with jangly distortion guitars, occasional electronic flourishes, and Alice pretty much resorting to straight-up growly voice throughout. Hard though not to like an energetic song that declares, "Oom Beh Beh Oom Beh Beh yea."

"Prettiest Cop on the Block," as the name suggests is a transvestite policeman tale. Definitely shot through with machismo, this is no limp-wristed rendition. "I got a stiff reputation with a stick like a rock. My kids are confused, and my wife is in shock." The vocals are the growls as previously--the I've-been-drinking-and-smoking-too-much gravel kind of voice. The music is a bit uninspired, particularly the drums. The novelty of the song wears out in fairly short order.

"Don't Talk Old to Me" manages to vary things musically, finally. A fairly deft combination of kind of heavy-handed guitar and lyrics set next to a chorus that features keyboards and a number of layered dialoguing vocal lines. The lyrics, of course, have a certain cleverness as an adult obviously complains about being told to give up all his toys, such as guns and cars. There are more musical details and variation in this song than the previous ones--the particular combination of comedy and seriousness here is pretty convincing.

"Generation Landslide `81" is a reprise of the lyrically excellent tune from "Billion Dollar Babies" (the tune, in fact, that gives us the phrase "billion dollar babies"). A military-march style snare kicks along, as simple guitar chords back up Alice's cultural rant, and adds a verse or two to the original. One of the effects of this song is to point out some of the less inspired aspects of the rest of the disc, but that doesn't mean one isn't glad for it being here. Energetic, socially incisive Alice.

"You Want It, You Got It" let's out Alice's inner used car salesman, as he vocally sleazes his way through this either brilliant send up of the worst of New Wave music, or a rather unfortunate example of it. Cheesy keyboards and ham-fisted drum machine, many years later this song sounds so dated that it almost ceases to be dated. If this song really tickles your fancy, then "Zipper Catches Skin" will be a treasure trove for you as this is definitely a prequel of that album to come. Harmless cheese, one may not expect "cute" from Alice, but here you are.

"You Look Good in Rags" returns to a more traditional rock ensemble, guitar lead and all. This workaday rocker never really quite stands up, even with the semi-barbershop acapella section of "rags rag rags" toward the end, clipping scissors effect and all. The non-stellarness of it does not mean that it's hopelessly boring. It's kind of good, harmless fun--it's just, one doesn't expect this sort of thing from Alice.

"You're a Movie" is a ridiculous cheeky monologue by a would be heroic general type. The music is thoroughly 80s, guitar tone and gacky keyboards all. And, in fact, the chorus that chants, "You're a movie" is completely dead and unspirited. So what makes this pure novelty song ever-fresh, ever-delightful and really very funny are Alice's intercut remarks. They say that in comedy timing is everything, and Alice shows that he's got it in spades here. Technically a pretty awful song, one cannot help digging the wily wit Alice puts out.

The last track, "Vicious Rumours" provides that obligatory Alice song about public perception. The vocals here draw out the snideness more. One wishes (throughout the album) that the drums were set back more in the mix, and the guitars brought forward, but there's more energy in this particular rocker than most of the rest of the album.

So, overall one can hardly recommend this album without qualifications, especially if you are getting here by way of his first band, or by his later work, like "Brutal Planet". As a kind of essay in cheese, and sheer low-fi production goofiness--and particularly of a sound that is glued immovably to the 80s--then you might enjoy this. Again, the import price is awfully steep for such a short disc. A used copy seems a better way to go.

It's on OK album for someone who is not Alice Cooper. It has some good tunes and some not so good tunes. But if you want a change of music style then it's alright to listen to once in a while. Flush the Fashion was a similiar album. This album has Alice in some of the scariest makeup ever.

My first concert was the Special Forces tour. It blew me away. This was his take on punk, and I liked it! Much better than his sluggish solo albums from the 70's. He was trying to reclaim his place in proto-punk history. He weighed about 98 pounds and ruled. "7&7 Is" sealed the deal. He was trying to present prepunk to the latter day punks. A great album, and the soundtrack to my childhood. It fit great with my Germs, Kommunity Fk, and TSOL records. Buy it worms!!!

    "Wild Eyed Southern Boys'" 1982 stuff is another of great album that shows their glorious days. CAUGHT UP IN YOU from this album became their first top 10 hit. This album is quite tight with hard rock edge as shown in CHAIN-LIGHTNING. Jim Peterik of Survivor adds dynamism in their smartly written tracks. Together with the two excellent tracks mentioned above, YOU KEEP RUNNING AWAY is also stellar track showing their mellow side that eventually become their trademark sound. Recommended for early 80s rock fans.

    I was hard pressed not to give this CD 5 stars, but Strengh in Numbers, in my opinion, was their best overall effort. "Caught Up In You", "Chain Lightnin" and "You Keep Runnin Away" are the strongest songs on this CD. 38 Special was big when southern rock was at its peak, and they would have given Lynard Skynard a run for their money had they avoid tragedy. With Donnie Van Zandt in this group, I find it a worthy comparison. The other six songs on this CD are okay, but none of the others get my foot tapping, which is always my first indication that a song is something special.

    SPECIAL FORCES is .38 Special's best album ever. The opener, "Caught Up In You", is a bit overplayed, but the rest is full of undiscovered gems. "Back Door Stranger" is a pro-law-and-order call to arms; "Back On The Track" provides an outlaw anthem for the ages; "Chain Lightning" flogs the Outlaws' jamming style to a Zeppelin-influenced epic; "Rough Housin'" and "Take 'Em Out" bring pure boogie heaven; "You Keep Runnin' Away" is Outlaws-influenced country-rock; and "Breakin' Loose" is both inspirational and cautionary- at the same time! Overall, it behooves any fan of 70s and 80s rock to check this one out as soon as possible.

      I agree with Twins review and Justin Credible's review... This CD is definetly worth buying if your a Big Ed fan. For people thinking about buying this album.. I wouldn't hesitate...Why? Because Big Ed Be Putting It Down Like That!! By the way before I forget to pay my condolences.. R.I.P. Big Ed The Assasin.

      I would never buy this album, one of my ...friends has this and I wanted to check it out to see how ...it was, and guess what? It was worse than what I expected and that is pretty bad. The production on Care Bears has better tunes than this....

      This is the best Cd Big Ed has done. MOst people said big ed can't do a cd by himself. they don't know what they talkin about big ed is off the chain. He did this album mostly by himself with guess appearance from fiend, skull duggery, moby, mr. serv-on, C-murder, kane and abel, and Stealth Assassin. This is one of the hottest Cd out. If you a fan of Big Ed you should pick it up or you of fan of no limit. Big Ed he ain't tightest as most lyrical artist but he is the hardest. That a little quote from one of hit song I am the Hardest. 2,3,4,5,6,11,12,13,14,19,22, or all tight on the Cd if you believe get it listen for yourself. I rate this CD 5 star because Big Ed be putting it down like that.

      I purchased this CD from Amazon thinking I was getting a new release from "Ed Palermo and His Big Band". I have had the pleasure of seeing Palermo & band in NYC several times. Thier covers of Frank Zappa's big band numbers are beyond reproach. When I got this CD in my mailbox, something was, shall we say, WRONG. "Big Ed and Special Forces" is not, as Amazon described, Ed Palermo. Unless Mr.Palermo put down his saxaphone, and is now a large Afro-American belting rap tunes such as "F'ckfest" or "Head Busta",(I am not making this up) Amazon has made a pretty big mistake. With so many new releases, mistakes will happen. But to confuse big band jazz with rap sure does make me wish for a good ol' fashion' record store.

      As for fans of BigEd & Special Forces, I rated this 3 stars just to be fair. (They MADE me rate it something)
