I'm a massage therapist and very picky about the music that works for me. This is awesome! I also love Shastro's Tantric.
Wonderful music.

4 out of 5 stars Well - Rounded, relaxing.......2005-05-25

I would not describe myself as a"new age" fan, but was looking for relaxing music to listen to while trying to concentrate, or do yoga to. I often find new age music to have a higher cheese factor than I can stomach. However, I purchased a few cd's, and this one i repeatedly return to. It has a constant, soothing rhythm from beginning to end - in fact, most of the tracks are highly repetitive in nature, so those who can't stand this may not appreciate this album. Most of the tracks are pretty simple flowing background music, yet the second one, with the berimbau, stands out for me as one I enjoy actively listening to. The last track has light chanting in the background which adds a more "organic" texture.

5 out of 5 stars You Must Hear This.......2005-07-12

I bought Sutras and didn't know what I was getting in to. I'm fairly new to Donovan though I'm learning fast. The songs here are so tight it is unbelievable that this CD is not more widely known or talked about!! It was only after many listens that I delved into the liner notes and discovered some of the sources that the artist used for inspiration, such as lines from classic spiritual texts, poetry, etc. But, this is somehow even beside the point. The songwriting here is like a spell, a beautiful culling of many spiritual traditions that Donovan distills through his ever entrancing guitar work and lyrical prowess. A freakin' masterpiece. I did some looking around on Donovan dedicated sites and found press articles relating to the release of this record. I encourage you to do the same just to fact check me, but if I remember correctly Rick Rubin contacted Donovan because he felt compelled to work with him and they ended up hanging out in L.A. for quite a while going to all sorts of fantastic bookstores and having some deep philosophical converstaions. Anyway, Donovan wrote 100 songs during this period and they brought it down to what, something like 14? Incredible. The production is very subtle, with a soft and whole accoustic resonance with the exception of one song ("out of nothing comes the one(?)") that has a very bright yet straight forward texture (somewhat George Harrisonesque sounding I think). It seems that the more this work is listened to, the deeper it goes!!! Enjoy this ride!

5 out of 5 stars An Underappreciated Masterpiece; Donovan's best album EVER!.......2007-04-05

This magnificent album--long out of print in the U.S., but still available as an import--is easily the finest work ever done by the unjustly-maligned Donovan Leitch. Superstar producer Rick Rubin, best known for his work with Johnny Cash, strips Donovan's songs down to the bare essentials, achieving results that hearken back to the singer's folkie beginnings. The resulting disc is understated, yet passionate, displaying a focus, and a sense of purpose, that was sometimes absent from the hippie trubador's late-60s drug-induced flights of fancy. Donovan's work, some of which has aged poorly, has always presented a critical conundrum, having been as passionately defended by fans as it was derided by detractors. If you are not yet a Donovan fan, this is the disc that may change your mind. It easily ranks among my top five all-time favorites. There is a timeless beauty and wisdom here that transcends the "hippy dippy" image. This is truly one for the ages, and will be a pleasant surprise for those who have not yet discovered it.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING!!.......2002-03-08

This CD is now my all time favorite. When Deep Forest made their first album, I totally loved it. Then they made their second.. and though it was good, it missed the deep trance like feeling I got from their first, same with the third and with the Enigma albums... this CD is wonderful! It starts out great and ends awesome! Any fan of Deep Forest, Enigma, Sacred Spirits... you have to own this album... I can express to you how wonderful this cd is! Buy it... you wont regret it!

5 out of 5 stars Pure Donovan Bliss.......2006-06-16

This C.D feels like my favorite meadow where I go to lay in the tall grass & listen to the wind, the misic & the words together create sanctuary. I can listen to this one endlessly.....

1 out of 5 stars Not nearly as good as the old Donovan.......2006-04-05

I hate to say it but I do not like this album. I LOVE all the other Donovan albums (CDs) I own but this one lacks that "donovanesque" sound I (usually) can't get enough of. If you like lyrics that repeat and repeat and repeat you might like this CD. The only other album I own that is as dissapointing as this is "The Driver" by Terry Reid. Tery Reid was another Mickey Most prodigy from the late 60's. Do yourself a favor DO NOT pick up this album or pick it up and realize how good the older songs really are! I do not own "Beat Cafe" - that one is also a big NO-NO.

sorry Donovan. It's just my opinion. :(

5 out of 5 stars The Overlooked Jewel.......2005-10-15

I so agree with the thoughtful review posted by ....someone from Michigan (can't see the other reviews while writing here).

This album seems to have been overlooked in the rush to repackage Donovan for some wave of nostalgia the marketers must think is coming. Donovan's body of work is so strong, of course, that marketers can pitch him any way they want and his "unprecedentedness" in the music of the time will always shine forth.

It's been maddening to be unable to download this most extraordinary album. I gave away my first physical copy, and have wanted the music constantly, and can't get it, so I'm going to order it physically again.

This effort shows Donovan in his true colors as a poet, musician, scholar, historian and guide for all of us. His influence on the music of the time (from Dylan and beyond the Beatles) needs to be fully recognized.

If you ever loved his perfect-pitch, resonant, slow-vibrato voice, this is the album that finally allows us to hear it flawlessly. This selection of songs is inward, peace-making, jewel-like, honest, moving, intimate. The man has never strayed from his affectionate and genuine path. Before you listen to his "hit" songs again, listen to this, and see where those efforts have always been tending.

5 out of 5 stars Sutras is super..........2005-08-19

I read a review about Sutras (not on Amazon) where they were criticizing Rick Rubin's production on Sutras for having "too much compression" and sounding "too modern." I'm sorry, but I think Rick is a genius and everything he did on this album sounds great. Actually, if you want to hear "too much compression" on a Donovan album, go back and listen to the Mickie Most-produced albums from the 60's, especially the Sunshine Superman LP which has some great brick-wall limiting on it. Mickie Most was as much a genius at producing as Rick Rubin. Donovan is so gifted at songwriting that his producers are really just there to "enhance" the music. Rick Rubin has a way of making the performances sound very natural. Warm and natural. I wish he had been producing albums in 1982 when everyone was drowning everything in reverb gates and wobbly chorus effects and making the music to sound like it was recorded in a large concrete garage. My review is really just to stress two points. Donovan is a brilliant singer and songwriter and Rick Rubin is a top-notch and technically skilled producer who crafts fine examples of brilliant audiophile. This album will not fail you. It's a shame that a follow-up or sequel never materialized. Rubin encouraged Donovan to compose a large number of songs so that the cream of the crop could be chosen for a final album. It would be nice to hear what wasn't chosen.

5 out of 5 stars Amato is wonderful with Sorabji's density intensity.......2000-04-23

These are wonderfully grotesque pieces, with expressive immensity, unrelenting. The first two works are based on ghost stories by writer Montague Rhodes who wrote in this genre to escape the boredom of academia. Sorabji uses these stories at a great conceptual distance, he never tone paints, all of Sorabji, at least whatever I've heard recorded, does not transform a text or image into a sonic representation the way Richard Strauss. But the piano sonorities do suggest this, like the two-handed organ-like chords for the cathedral settings here of St.Bertrand. Quaere reliqua hujus materiei is unrelenting scouring the entire register of the piano, fast arpeggiated momnets, highlt ornamented textures, sounding improvisational most of the time. Sorabji has also contributed greatly toward blurring the tyranny of the barline, but then that's not saying much for all of Sorabji has similar expressive features. Amato plays the hell out of these pieces, and you need always to clarify your playing, the way chords are shaped and articulated, the sonority must always be clean with a transparency of tone. Sorabji's music is incredibly dense with continuous motion. The pianist who ventures to play Sorabji is like a small boat at sea during a formidable storm, swaying, rocking and diving in between and amongst the rolling dangerous waves. Likewise St Bertrand de Comminges, where a skull decoration is included within the notes here from the sixteenth century cathedral the piece depicts. Busoni has left an indelible mark on Sorabji's creativity, having heard him when Sorabji was very young, for which in return we cannot help but hear Busoni in Sorabji's music. Nothing obvious except here as Sorabji's utilization of a quote from Busoni's opera Arlecchino, which was an anti-war response to the First World War. Passeggiata arlecchinesca amply transforms the excerpt Passiagiata derived from Passacaglia uses this melodic quote as as tructural base. Recall that Busoni was also a great transformer of music materials himself, he overhauled the tradition began by Listz(actually arrangements have always been an integral part of music's content in history)For Busoni however we have his Chaconne for piano transmografied from the Bach violin piece as a high water mark in this genre. Sorabji's musical language has similar features as Busoni throughout all his works, the density, the intense expression, engaging the piano sound for the sheer joy of its roaring demeanor, texture, and contrasting colour of brooding octaves to higher register bell-like moments, so the Arlecchino is barely recognized.,yet transformed all the same. Written in January 1982 this was possibly Sorabji's last work.
