You Had It Coming

Editorial Reviews

At an age when fellow ex-Yardbirds guitar gods Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page are polishing their legend and trying to recapture it, respectively, Jeff Beck has produced one of his most challenging and rewarding albums. An edgy, metallic maelstrom with a distinctly postmodern slant (thanks largely to the tense, digitized rhythms of producer Andy Wright and drummer/programmer Aiden Love), You Had It Coming is the kind of album his fraternal fretmeisters might scarcely understand, let alone attempt. Already the guitar's unparalleled master of feedback, distortion, harmonic sorcery, and microtonal manipulation, Beck here pushes the envelope yet again. From the manic thrash-metal of "Earthquake" to the hot-rod sampled "Roy's Toy" and especially "Loose Cannon," Beck's soloing is all haunting howls and jagged corners, a nervy dance along the razor's edge of dissonance and melody. The emotionally charged changes of pace are as surprising as they are compelling: Beck exploring Eastern modalities while showcasing his arsenal of technique in a stunning take on Indian pop musician Nitin Sawhney's "Nadia"; the techno revamp of the blues staple "Rollin' and Tumblin'," fronted by the urgent vocals of Imogene Heap; Jeff literally jamming with a chirping feathered friend on "Blackbird" (while plying the frets with a table fork!); the fingerpicking funk of "Rosebud"; and the graceful, lyrical resolve of "Suspension." This is one of Beck's best and a worthy companion to Blow by Blow, Wired, and Guitar Shop. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2007-01-28

I was somewhat disappointed by this CD. When I heard Beck's rendition of "Rollin' and Tumblin'" with Imogen Heap, I thought this CD would be fantastic. Instead, I found a CD that was more electronic rock than rock or blues with heavy use of the drum kit. Most of the songs didn't have any melody.

5 out of 5 stars Creativity all over.......2006-09-14

Jeff Beck is far from the typical rock guitarist. He never took the easy path of showing how fast or virtuoso he is. Instead, he is full of intriguing and explosive ideas that make you want to listen to this CD over and over again. That's what musicianship is all about, and Jeff has plenty of it.

5 out of 5 stars A league of his own.......2006-06-05

Quite simply: Mind-blowing. This guy has it all -- feel, edge, risk, dynamics, and damn big balls if this album is anything to go by! He's continued the theme of "Who Else?" with his experimentation of live-meets-electro backing, but this time the playing seems even more inspired. 'Earthquake' sets the bar pretty high from the outset, sounding a bit like a revved up Nine Inch Nails tune. Then we're into a stellar roll of four songs with 'Nadia' possibly hitting an all time Beck high -- fantastic beats and a touch on the geetar that sends shivers down the spine. 'Loose Cannon' has an almost elastic riff that sprawls and grooves whilst 'Left hook' wouldn't be out of place at an underground drum 'n' bass club in Brixton -- super-aggressive backing matched with super-aggressive chops. The album then rides out on a high, but toned down, note. A genius album by a genius man. Highly, highly recommended for musos and non-musos alike.

5 out of 5 stars Wild.......2005-11-04

You have got to love Dirty Mind and Loose Cannon; totally wild. It's amazing how a well established artist can put together a new sound and just rock into the future.........it does sound like Beck has been spending some time under the hood of his car.

5 out of 5 stars another world.......2005-09-06

I've heard this album now about 6 times. Each time it gets better. This is the only album I've heard in years that I enjoy listening to the whole album straight through. In this age of digital, I find that the sounds can be too seperated for my taste. I prefer listening to this album through my stero system (not earphones) with the speakers close together. This blends the sound better for me. Under these conditons this is a really spritual experience. I also really appreciate how the album is seemingly designed to be listened to from beginning to end. By the end I always feel better and more relaxed.

5 out of 5 stars JEFF'S BIG COLOSSUS MONSTER ROCK IS STELLAR!.......2001-02-04

This is BIG COLOSSUS MONSTER MUSIC and THIS ALBUM ROCKS! Picking up where his last studio album Who Else? left off, Jeff Beck turns up the fire even more on his new release You Had It Coming (Epic). Sure, those electro urban dance funk club rhythms underscore a number of tunes but so what? This material is 100% stronger on all points than the material on Who Else? (Depending what your taste is). Believe me, I like the latter, but compared to this album that was just the appetizer and this is the BIG main course. Those who though Jeff forgot how to whip out lighting fast guitar runs are in for a surprise. Listen to the fade on "Left Hook". Those series of runs are blazing fast and played with accuracy and cleanliness not sloppiness. I wish that lead run was not on the fade and there was more of those on these songs, but that's life. "Rollin' And Tumblin' gets a back to the roots classic rock approach like the Jeff of the Beck, Bogart, Appice period with the vocals handled by a new young British singer Imogen Heap who's whiskey dry voice is the perfect fuel to this powerhouse workout. As for Jeff on this song he whips the slide and slashes razor sharp! Other smokers to rave about? "Roy's Toy, " "Dirty Mind," guitarist Jennifer Batten's tune "Earthquake" and the beautiful Indian song "Nadia". I can go on and on but I said enough. GET THIS CD AND PLAY IT LOUD! A.

5 out of 5 stars This will make the hair on your body stand up again & again.......2001-02-02

This album rocks. It is so easy to listen to and gets better every time you give it a spin. A pure pleasure !!!

5 out of 5 stars Jeff Beck does it again!.......2001-01-16

Jeff Beck proves once more why he is so highly rated amongst his peers. This CD shows off his skills in a variety of styles, sometimes very modern, sometimes classic blues and sometimes something completely different. The standout track is "Nadia" with an unbelieveably smooth legato technique and a melody to die for. This is the sort of tune that separates Mr. Beck from most of the others in his elite class. He uses his awsome technical ability to make great music. He hardly ever shows off but rather just plays what is right for the occasion. But, if you want a little bit of shred, just listen to the end of "Left Hook". And after the barrage of "Earthquake", "Loose Cannon" and "Left Hook" and the fun of "Dirty Mind", "Rollin and Tumblin'" and "Rosebud" the CD ends with "Suspension" THE most gorgeous sound painting of the lot.

5 out of 5 stars I'm so glad I had this coming !.......2001-01-08

A great album for Jeff Beck fans. Most of the songs establish a groove and then work it from there. The guitar playing from Beck is very entertaining and heavy. This album was easy to get used to right out of the box and on repeated plays it gets better and better. Some of the interplay reminds me of Miles Davis at his funky best. I think this album is even better than the previous "Who Else ?". I'm so glad Jeff Beck made this CD.

    5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2000-12-26

I just got "You Had It Coming" for Christmas, and I must say it is great! It sounds a bit strange at first, but before you know it, you're hooked on the album. Jeff Beck has always been my fave guitarist, and still is. "You Had It Coming" is a sure classic! "You Had It Coming" is definatly a step up from "Who Else!", and I think is almost right up there with "Blow by Blow." "You Had It Coming" is one of Jeff Beck's best albums.

    Track Analysis:

Earthquake- This track is a very good opening track, and is even more rock then "Who Else!" was. Very nice song.

Roy's Toy- Car sounds are at the beginning of this track, and the beat really gets you hooked on this song.

Dirty Mind- A very interesting track, with good guitar wizardry!

Rollin' and Tumblin'- I was surprised to hear that there was vocals on this track, but nonetheless, Jeff does a good job on this track.

Nadia- Nadia is probably one of the best songs on the album. Jeff does magnificantly switching from bottleneck to fingers.

Loose Cannon- Great track. A bit long, but a pleasure to listen to.

Rosebud- A fun track to listen to. Jeff seems to have fun with this one.

Left Hook- Nice track, great guitar.

Blackbird- Great sounds from Jeff's guitar on this track. Very impressive.

Suspension- Similar to "Another Place" on "Who Else!" Very nice track though, and very pleastant to listen to.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic melodic prog-metal (from Utah?)!.......2006-05-02

The cool thing comes when you are introduced to a new band you otherwise would never have known existed. Such is the case with Hourglass. I'm a prog fan that enjoys longer songs because if feel it gives good bands a chance to stretch out their musical ideas better. Let's just say these guys extend things out quite a bit with 5 songs on an 80min disc with two songs being less than 5min! I've seen some refer to this as Dream Theater light. I'm not so certain as it can be as heavy as DT at times. However, most of the time they stick to a more melodic prog-metal style that is more concerned with the songs than a showcase for technical prowess. I assume that the reference to Dream Theater light can be attributed to their not being an instrumental masturbation band like DT. That's not saying they're not quality musicians, quite to the contrary. The guitarist and the drummer are definitely skilled and above average for the genre.

And now, a short word about the vocals. The vocalist fits very well in the slower parts of songs, but just doesn't quite have enough power or range to effortlessly handle the heavier sections like other vocal stalwarts in the prog-metal genre. He's got a nice voice and he's also the third singer in three albums, so I think the band also recognizes finding the right singer can be an issue. When you're used to hearing singers like Russell Allan, Jorn Lande, Devin Townsend, James Labrie, Mac, Damien Wilson, Ray Alder, and Devin Graves; you have a certain idea of how prog-metal vocals can be handled.

The opening song, The Hammer's Strike is heavier than the material from their second album. There are some great guitar riffs and drumming variety. The keyboard and guitar interplay is impressive at times. The guitarist definitely has some similarities to Petrucci in his use of fast arpeggio's and scale runs. Yet at the same time he's a more melodic soloist. The keyboardist uses a lot of piano work in the song which definitely gives the song a more unique and non-DT take. At no time does this song seem repetitive or too long. The 17min goes by very fast and never loses interest.

The next track, Altered State opens with a great bass line with a nice burbling tone. The vocal harmonies work incredibly well on this track. They're really catchy and memorable. This would make a good single. There's some nice acoustical guitar throughout the song with some great ethereal keyboards. What's cool about this track is that it never devolves into a power ballad. The drumming is also well done on this track with the drummer performing a lot of interesting cymbals work (something I really value in a drummer). All in all this is a great, concise track.

Now for the second epic presented in multiple track fashion, the 20min Mists of Darkness. MoD starts off with a quick keyboard which transitions into another memorable and harmonious vocal centric introduction. When the guitar kicks in the song has an early 80's Foreigner like hard rock flavor before returning to a more laid back Spock's Beard like section. When the prog-metal section kicks in it is very reminiscent of Fates Warning with driving guitars and heavy drumming. In fact, all that's missing is Ray Alder's voice!

The other short track on this recording is the 4.5min Thread the Needle. This is more like your standard prog-metal number with heavy guitar riffs, distorted keyboards, and staccato vocals. This sounds a lot like Falling into Infinity era Dream Theater.

Finally the album closes with the massive 32min epic Exit Wounds. This is a more traditional epic in the sense that it has multiple parts which are relatively distinct in that you can tell when you've switched to the next part in the epic. That's both good and bad, I like epics where they are totally seamless. Then again, I like epics where I can here separate and catchy subsections. I guess on this cd you get both types. There are a lot of nice memorable, vocal harmonies; though a little repetitive during Farewell. The subject matter is war and death, which does apply in these times. The drummer really shines on this epic. He switches between military patterns and heavy passages with ease. His intricate cymbal work is quite impressive and varied; something I wish more drummers in general would take as an example.

For a new band, these guys are actually pretty impressive. There is definitely a sign of progression following their second album. If they keep getting better at this rate, they are going to be a real force in the prog-metal genre. This cd is definitely worth picking up, especially considering it is only $[...]. I think if you are a DT, Fates Warning, or Threshold fan you will find this recording quite enjoyable.
