5 out of 5 stars Frehley's 2nd solo disc.......2006-09-25

I could barely wait for this album to come out. Back in '86 or '87 when this was released, there was no internet, so the only way to keep up with your favorite bands was to read about them in the handful of rock magazines that catered to this kind of music: Metal Edge, Rock Scene, and Circus.

Like many, I was a huge KISS fan, but by the time I discovered them, Peter and Ace were long gone and the glory days of the hottest band in the world were, too. Though the remaining members had unmasked and we all knew what they looked like, Peter and Ace were nowhere to be found. I'd read an occasional story about one of them--Peter's guest appearance on a Black n Blue album or Ace Frehley endorsing Washburn guitars, but there wasn't much else.

I had heard that Ace had formed Frehley's Comet and was recording a new album, but that had gone on for years & years. Every time I went to the local record store (they really were "record" stores back then) I'd look for this album, and finally one day it was there. I was totally thrilled.

Joining Ace in the band were Tod Howarth (who apparently worked with Cheap Trick for a while), Pat Regan (who now produces albums), and veteran drummer Anton Fig (who has recorded with just about everyone at this point, including most of Ace's solo work). Howarth provided the more commercial side of the band (on tracks like "Calling to You"), and Ace's tunes sound pretty much like his '78 solo album.

Howath is a decent vocalist & clearly has a better range than Frehley, but I (and probably many others) would have preferred an all-Frehley album. This ends up being half Frehley, half Howarth. But hey, for a guy who waited so long to hear this album, half Frehley will do.

4 out of 5 stars Ace First solo After Leaving Kiss.......2006-05-29

This album has some realy good songs on it.But if you ever bought an album for just one song, then Rock Soldiers is it.
That song is the best song Ace ever did and is a classic in my opinion.Just hits the spot and his lead guitar in it is awsome.
Mind you there is some other good songs here, Tod Howarth did share vocals and did a fine job with his contributions.
Actually there is no bad songs here.
Except i dont know why he kept attempting remakes of Fractured Mirror.

5 out of 5 stars Ace Frehley is the last of the true originals........2006-01-05

When Ace Frehley left Kiss, everyone knew something was missing,it became obvious that Ace WAS Kiss, then after creative differances with Gene and Paul,Ace wanted to go back to the basics, straight out ROCK. because of contractual obligations Ace wasnt able to release his solo album right away, and fans began to grow anxious for some Ace. 1987 saw the release of Frehleys Comet, power rock at its best.
1.Rock Soldiers 9/10-Ace's anti-drinking anthem
2.Breakout-8/10-Ace's bandmate Tod Howarth sings this one
3.Into The Night 10/10-The BEST song on here
4.Something Moved 7/10-Tod Howarth's best song
5.We Got Your Rock-9/10-An instant Ace classic
6.Love Me Right 10/10-Ace truly jams on this one
7.Calling To You 7/10-An anthemic song from Howarth.
8.Dolls 6/10-Catchy but not rocking enough.
9.Stranger In a Strange Land 8/10-Simple,memorable
10.Fractured Too 9/10-A worthly sequel to Ace's original "Fractured" from his solo masterpiece in 1978.

Best Songs:Rock Soldiers,Into The Night,Love Me Right

Highest Possible Recomendation.

5 out of 5 stars Ace's High.......2005-06-14

For the song 'Rock Soldiers' by itself, the album (a concession to my age)is worth purchasing. The lyrics are spartan, but true to the rock n roll spirit. Which is how it should be. The result are lyrics that are honest, yet imperative with the adjoining hard beat. Ace rules!

5 out of 5 stars Not a shredder's album, but if you play and write songs..........2005-05-03

... this one is for you.

With this album, Ace spreads his cape and shows us his two sides-- the rock star and the creative artist. For the KISS traditionalist, there are songs like "Rock Soldiers" and "Breakout"; the more experimental player will like the quirky sense of fun in "Dolls" and the flowing instrumental "Fractured Too". The pop fans will love the Russ Ballard cover "Into the Night" (great solo, Ace!) and Tod Howarth's reworking of 707's "Megaforce", retitled "Calling to You" and given all new lyrics.

Even the songs that are a little "different" for Ace still work; "Stranger in a Strange Land" 's rhythm has some off-time drumming but still blows me away.

If you need a break from Yngwie, Steve, and Joe, look no further than this album for some great, diverse guitar rock.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Classic ACE = Classic KISS!.......2007-05-31

This album to me is as essential to Classic Kiss as "Destroyer". It's THAT good. The solo albums vary in style, but this one has a rip roaring classic Kiss vibe to it, and it even goes places that Kiss as a group can't go...like the melodic "What's on Your Mind?" - How that wasn't a major hit I'll never know, but it still sounds like it could be released today by a new group. "Rip it Out" is timeless. Obviously "New York Groove" is awesome. But "Fractured Mirror" is like Ace's "Stairway to Heaven". Unbelievable guitar work on here, great songwriting, and Ace and Eddie Kramer obviously had a blast getting out all of these cool sounds. I know many say that KISS should have never done the solo albums...but then we would never have this classic record.

5 out of 5 stars Space Ace still rocks today. .......2007-05-14

i have been a kiss fan ever since the 70s,when the time came that were going to do separate solo albums after there release ACE blew them all away.buy youll enjoy promice

I give it three stars becayse its good bytt it ant kiss if you love kiss you should also check out kiss, dresed to kill and psycho circus and others.

4 out of 5 stars Ace Frehley - self-titled (Mercury) 4 1/2 stars.......2006-06-21

Review no.77.Out of the four Kiss solo albums that hit the market back in 1978,Ace Frehley's effort is,without a doubt the best.See my reviews of the Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons solo lp's.I haven't heard this CD in ages.I'd forgotten all about the opener "Rip It Out" that later went onto be a Frehley's Comet staple.Other notable cuts are "Speeding Back To My Baby","Ozone","New York Groove"(loved hearing this tune performed on past Kiss tours, like their 'Dynasty' trek I believe it was and their '96 reunion)and "Wipe Out".Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-05-28

In 1978, at the height of KISS's popularity, rather than release a new studio album, all four members simultaneously released a solo album. Although critics have often called this nothing more than a gimmick, there is no denying the quality of these recordings. All four albums are well written and crafted. All four members of KISS really put their heart and soul into this project and made a solo album that really reflects their personality. KISS was like a stew, made up of four separate ingredients. The KISS solo albums of 1978 really let you see each member and what it is exactly they brought into KISS.
This cd has Ace at his very best.
He has released other Cds since but this is is best in my opinion. From start to finish its good.
Some of my favorites from the cd are,Speeding Back To My Baby,New York Groove,Rip it out and Ozone.

Album Description

The best way to describe "The Ace" is that in a world full of copies, he remains an original. Let's face it, Ace was everyone's favorite when he was in Kiss - nobody is cooler than ACE. The smoking guitar, the original and screaming lead guitar, the voice, the songwriting...ACE is an extremely talented musician.

This collection of live songs represents some of his best work during the period after his highly publicized departure from one of the greatest rock bands of all time.

Included on this GREATEST HITS LIVE CD with INCREDIBLE LIMITED EDITION 3D cover art, are tracks from the Megaforce days and features members of Ace Frehley's Comet: Anton Fig, John Regan, Ted Howarth and Richie Scarlett with Jamie Oldaker on drums live in London, plus other special guests. Sit back and enjoy Ace Frehley in an atmosphere where he does his best work...LIVE!

4 out of 5 stars A good CD! .......2007-01-12

Another recommended item the every fan of KISS of our Ace!

5 out of 5 stars why was this even released?.......2006-09-01

first off, the cd gets 5 stars for the music of ACE that's featured on the cd BUT I just don't get why this was released since it has the same songs found on the two best of ACE CDs=Loaded Deck & 12 Picks...It's only good to get if you have all the Ace solo cds from the 80's..But if you are looking for THE BEST OF ACE=both with hits, studio tracks and live stuff, then buy BOTH 12 picks and Loaded Deck...just makes no sense having this out with the other two best of's already released..

3 out of 5 stars Ace Frehley; Greatest Hits recycled........2006-07-28

I would recommend this album only if you don't have any previous Ace Freyley or Freyley's Comet albums. This material is from previous releases. The songs are pulled from "Live Plus 1, Loaded Deck and 12 picks. Nothing new or first released here. I suspect this was nothing more than a contract obligation from Ace's former label: megaforce records.

4 out of 5 stars Good collection of live songs from Ace Frehley's solo career.......2006-05-21

Ever since I have been a die hard KISS fan,I have always loved Ace Frehley's guitar playing, and it is a shame that Frehley is no longer a member of KISS (especially after KISS' long-awaited reunion which happened in 1996). However, while it may be sad that Ace Frehley is no longer with KISS and a tad pit pathetic as to how it has taken Frehley over ten years to release his new studio solo album,"Ace Frehley--Greatest Hits Live" is a good album that is worth owning. Most of the live tracks on here (according to what the liner notes of this record say)come from a concert that Ace did with one of his post KISS bands (Frehley's Comet)in England,at which Ace's fellow Comet bandmates (John Regan,Tod Howarth, and Jamie Oldaker)were accompanying Ace in his performance (the only live tracks on here that aren't from the concert in England are "Strangers in a Stange Land" and "Rock Soldiers",which were recorded in Chicago and find Ace performing live alongside John Regan,Tod Howarth, and Anton Fig). The live tracks that are on here sound good--Ace Frehley gave some good guitar work and singing to the live performances of songs that were included on this record, and his band members sounds in top form,as well. I also like the two previously unreleased solo songs from Ace that are on this CD,"One Plus One" and "Give it to me Anyway",which are both catchy and well written songs ("Give it to me anyway" even has Peter Criss performing on it as a guest,as well as former/current Skid Row band members Sebastian Bach,Dave Sabo, and Rachel Bolan),while the limited edition 3-D cover that is accompanying this CD (it shows Ace performing at one of his solo concerts, holding up his smoking Jackson guitar)looks really cool and is a collector's item. My only complaint is that most of the songs that are performed live here are actually KISS songs, which leaves some (but not enough)room for Ace's solo material to be on this CD with this album being issued as a single disc (I would have preferred a two disc set here,to even out live performances of KISS songs and live performances of Ace's solo material),yet everything else here is fine. Hopefully Ace will put out his new studio solo record in the near future, and if you miss the days from when Ace was still with KISS and happen to be one of the several guitarists out there who was inspired to play guitar by Ace himself, this CD will serve as a nice treat for you.

5 out of 5 stars sheet metal mechanic.......2006-03-04

This cd was excellent! Ace and his band sounded great on all the songs.. I've heard some people say they don't by cd's and listen to all the songs.. obviously they aren't A huge fan of the artist that they are listening to, I listened to the whole cd and loved all of the songs! I just can't wait until he come's out with some new stuff!

3 out of 5 stars The Spaceman's Collection.......2003-03-07

In 1996, Jon Regan, the former bassist of Frehley's Comet put togehter 12 Picks, a greatest hits album of Ace Frehley's solo career. It was a major success and Loaded Deck came out in 1998 as another greatest hits album. This album is a masterpiece like 12 Picks. The album does feature two demo tracks that didn't appear on Ace's albums on tracks one and two. The opener "One Plus One" starts out with a heavy drum beat and then loud heavy metal guitar riffs. The song is about someone who can't add. Some lyircs like "One Plus One, is one. I know it's crazy. But it's true. One Plus One, is one. And that one is me and you." The second new song "Give It To Me Anyway" is a good song with a good chorus. The album features Tod's famous ballad "It's Over Now" and one of Ace's strongest anthems, "Shot Full Of Rock". Like 12 Picks, half the album is live. On this one, tracks 6-10 are live cuts of some of Ace's best songs. The album in general is pretty good for a greatest hits collection of Ace. If you want an Ace Frehley greatest hits album, here it is. Also inside the case is a suprise from Ace.

3 out of 5 stars Ace was the "fuel" KISS needed..........1999-10-14

Ace Frehley demonstrates through this album, as well as his Comet albums, that he had much to do with the distinct sound that KISS came to be known for. Ace is a super guitarist and has a wonderfully unique "rockin'" voice. This album is not quite as good as 12 Picks, however, it does demontrate that Ace was clearly responsible for that "KISS sound". Rock and Roll, Ace!!!

3 out of 5 stars Worthy only as a companion piece to 1997's 12 Picks release........1998-05-30

Loaded Deck is a nice companion to 12 Picks in that it includes the greatest hits omitted from 12 Picks. However I feel that the material here doesn't quite measure up to that of 12 Picks. Of course a second best-of isn't going to have as many hits per se as the first but what would have been a better format would have been to have all the studio cuts on one album and then have the second strictly containing live material. Of course this way, fans have to buy BOTH albums to get the hits, right? Clever marketing, I guess. It was nice to see a couple of unreleased studio cuts on Loaded Deck, though. One Plus One is a decent song. Give It To Me Anyway is the better of the two though, most notably the guitarwork. As far as the live material goes, it is your standard fare with all the cheesy banter and crowd cheers included for ambience. As a stand alone, Loaded Deck is average, however, as mentioned above, it is an excellent companion piece to 1997's 12 Picks release. In owning these two albums, one can truly enjoy the highlights of Ace Frehley's solo work.

2 out of 5 stars Money, money, money.......2002-02-27

Ace released this compilation in the wake of the KISS reunion tour and album from 1996, PSYCHO CIRCUS. Just it, to make a few more bucks for himself.

5 out of 5 stars rockin Ace.......2001-07-13

some great frehley frehley and an awesome verson of SHOCK ME - this is the ROCK HARD space ace - blast off live now

5 out of 5 stars Ace = GOD!.......2000-11-17

The second half of this CD is the real Ace. The live stuff. Ace, despite his bizarre behavior, is an amazing entertainer and live performer. Cold Gin, Deuce, and Shock Me are standouts on this compilation.

If you've seen KISS live and want a taste of what Ace is like as a solo live performer - this is a reccomended CD. The studio tracks are just okay.

5 out of 5 stars ACE'S BEST WORK.......2000-10-15

This album is a must have for fans of Ace's guitar work but be warned if you dont like his guitaring dont get this. His singing is great in here and since he split up with KISS it has allowed him to show off his skill in guitar solos and riffs. What makes this album great is Ace made half of this album songs from his solo career and the other half is live songs that he wrote when he was still with KISS.That's what makes all the songs great(except Words are not enough and Breakout)and this album Ace's best.So stop reading these reviews and buy Ace Frehley's 12 Picks and hope you get a free autographed pick inside!

5 out of 5 stars What can I say? It's Ace Frehley!.......2000-07-13

Ace is back and he told you so! This compilation CD featuring songs from Ace's after-KISS band, "Frehley's Comet," is a very underrated CD that many people have yet to listen to. Hard rock fans have grown to appreciate it, but I recommend it to anyone who is a fan of any incarnation of rock. Ace soars on "Trouble Walkin'," "Rock Soldiers," (my personal favorite) and ALL of the live tracks, especially "Shock Me" and "Cold Gin." Ace shows why he is one of the 5 greatest guitarists of all time, up there with Angus Young, Jimi Hendrix, Santana, and Kirk Hammet. Just buy this CD and he'll prove it to you, too.

5 out of 5 stars One of ACE's best!.......2007-02-04

With "Trouble Walkin'" Ace Frehley decided to follow the heavier, hard rock direction of his 1978 KISS solo album as opposed to the pop-metal direction of "Frehley's Comet" and "Second Sighting," and in doing so he created his second best solo album to date! (second only to his KISS solo.) The album starts rockin' hard with "Shot Full of Rock" and never stops! Ace's covers of "Do Ya" and "Hide Your Heart" give ELO and KISS a run for their money, respectively. "Five Card Stud" and "Lost in Limbo" are cool tunes that Rock Soldiers will love. "Trouble Walkin'", though not written by ACE, is still a very catchy and very rockin' tune. "2 Young 2 Die" is the only non-Ace lead vocal track on the disc, instead being sung by Richie Scarlett. "Back to School" is cool. However, "Remember Me" is one of my favorites on the disc! And "Fractured III" puts "Fractured Too" and "The Acorn is Spinning" to shame, and is second only to the original "Fractured Mirror." Die-hard Ace fans and casual fans will both be able to appreciate the best, and so far, last solo album of Ace Frehley!

4 out of 5 stars Explosive and fitting tribute to Space Ace!.......1998-09-08

The best of today's crop of metal guitarists got together for a tribute to perhaps one of rock's most influential figures in Ace Frehley. The best songs on the album include "Deuce" by Megadeth's Marty Friedman, "Shock Me" by Gilby Clarke, "Parasite" by Tracii Gunns, and a very "Beck-ish" (of Odelay, not Jeff) rendition of "New York Groove" by Bruce Bouillet. In fact, all the songs were quite good with the exception of John Norum's "Cold Gin" which had too much lead guitar work. It seemed like he was trying too hard to show off in a song that is simple to the core. Overall, it is a must have for anyone influenced by the style and personna of Ace Frehley.

5 out of 5 stars Ace Rocks!.......2005-10-13

This was the only Kiss solo CD I had for a long time. I'm an Ace fan and had to buy this when the LP came out. Fractured Mirror, Rip It Out and New York Groove are the best tunes on this Cd but also of the other member's Cds. Gene, Paul and Peter had some highlights on their releases but not as many as Ace.
This is well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the 1978 solo albums.......2004-01-22

Ace Frehley (1978.) A solo album by the KISS member.

On September 18, 1978, KISS did something no other rock band has ever done to this day - all four members released a solo album on the same day. Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley, and Peter Criss would now not only be recognized for their music-making abilities as a group, but also as solo artists.

Although Ace Frehley was the guitar mastermind that ultimately made KISS such a great band (he even designed the KISS logo!), he tended to go very unappreciated by fans, who tended to favor Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons. Fortunately, every member of the band got their chance to shine as solo artists in 1978 when they all released solo albums. How does Ace's measure up? Read on and find out.

Every one of the KISS solo albums featured a certain uniqueness when compared to those by the other members. Paul Stanley stuck close to the stylings of KISS. Gene Simmons experimented with the rock stylings of the day. Peter Criss did an album of rhythm and blues. But what about Ace? He'd give us a taste of things to come in the rock world. The first two tracks, Rip It Out and Speedin' Back To My Baby sound a good deal like the glam metal bands that would dominate the next decade. It really makes you wonder how big an influence this album was on eighties metal bands. Snow Blind is a hard rocker as only Ace could do, with some killer guitar riffs (this is NOT the Black Sabbath song.) For Ozone and What's On Your Mind?, Ace uses both acoustic and electric guitars, and in doing so creates something that sounds like a fusion of eighties metal and nineties alternative grunge rock. New York Groove was the only charting hit from any of the KISS solo albums, and with good reason. It's an excellent song that fuses elements of Queen and Led Zeppelin, two of the biggest rock bands of the day. Ace closes the album with an instrumental entitled Fractured Mirror. The chiming bell intro to this song has been copied by god only knows how many bands (ACDC and Metallica to name a few.) This is a lighter and more melodic track than the others on the album. The keyboards and backing riffs add a lot to this song. All four KISS solo albums from 1978 end with a ballad, and this one's the best of all four of them.

This album is a rock and roll masterpiece. If you're a fan of KISS or classic hard rock/heavy metal, this is an album that you must own. All of the KISS solo albums from 1978 were excellent, but this one is (by far) the best of the lot.

4 out of 5 stars Must have for all UNION fans.......2005-08-08

I bought this one on a chance because John Corabi(vocals), Joe Lynn Turner(vocals) and Bob Daisley(bass) were on this. Funny thing is, my favorite song on the cd, "I'll Lay Down" doesn't include any of them and has a killer guitar riff that is very catchy. Lots of different performers on this cd, usually means it is going to be ok or not so good. Not this time. Even though I'm not rating it 5 stars, it is close because for some reason I just keep putting it back in my car cd player to hear it again. It's nice to have a good rockin cd with alot of different singers, guitars, etc, and have it all blend together nicely. I think if you are a UNION fan you will also like this group.
