Amazon.com essential recording

Band on the Run should have been a disaster. Two of Wings' original members quit in a huff just before its production. The whimsical decision to record in Lagos, Nigeria, became a nightmare when McCartney and company found themselves in a decaying studio, then had many of the project's demos stolen by armed bandits. Despite these hardships--perhaps because of them--Band on the Run remains the most focused and consistently satisfying record of McCartney's wildly uneven post-Beatles career. This mini box set contains the original album, a well-written booklet by Mark Lewisohn, and a bonus disc featuring outtake snippets and interviews with all the album's participants (including its cover crew, which includes actors James Coburn and Christopher Lee) and Dustin Hoffman, who recounts how he spurred McCartney to spontaneously write "Picasso's Last Words" on a dare. This second disc would make a fine radio show; it comes up short where it matters most--in music. Time spent detailing the album-cover photo session could have been more gratifyingly devoted to more contemporary outtakes (much of the bonus Band material is culled from live performances from as recently as the mid '90s; perhaps McCartney wants us to know how important the record has been to him over the years) or to a pair of single B-sides, which are curiously absent here. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Classic Early 70's Rock Album.......2007-05-05

The best and most successful Rock album Paul McCartney, with Wings released. It is a classic rock album worthy of its praise, its boldness and McCartney was back with a bang with an emphatic message to the music world.

1. Band on the Run - A classic.

2. Jet - A classic. What a one-two punch to kick of the album?

3. Bluebird - Beautiful harmonies. Underrated.

4. Mrs. Vandebilt - A silly story song made good by Paul's great vocals and great musicianship of his trio.

5. Let Me Roll It - Remains a concert staple and fan favourite. This song is best performed live, the studio version is a weaker immitation of the real thing, which is live baby.

6. Mamunia - The melody master near his best, but many people don't know this song, it is a pleasure to listen to. Macca's voice is at its clearest, the band harmonises in peak form.

7. No Words - Has a Beatles/Badfinger sound to it. Paul and Denny harmonising is really something to hear.

8. Helen Wheels - A fun and catchy rocker, nothing earth shaking.

9. Picasso's Last Words (Drink to Me) - Macca's musical response to a Dustin Hoffman challange. Its a great song, I love the drunken feel to the music, great engineering.

10. Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five - A pulsating climax to the album, most of Pauls best albums finish with a bang.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Finest Rock Albums Ever Made, No Question About It........2007-03-04

By 1974, Paul McCartney's solo career had an interesting conflict associated with it. He scored big with his first few solo albums, scoring big with hit singles like "Another Day", "Live And Let Die" and "My Love". His loyal fanbase was broader than ever.

However, Paul and his newly formed band Wings were ripped apart by music critics who felt John and George's solo work was far more innovative and overall worth owning. Paul decided to put an end to this criticism. He, along with his wife Linda and his fellow Wings bandmates, jetted down to Legolas in Africa to record what would become one of the best rock albums ever made. After several months that resulted in various technical problems as well as a mugging, "Band On The Run" was released.

"Band On The Run" is, to put it in simple terms, an awesome album. This is Paul at his best. This the Paul we all know and love. He is loose, focused and clearly enjoying himself along with the rest of the band. The album opens with the classic title track, which starts off as a slow, kind of whiny number, then picks up the pace a bit as an ominous revnge fantasy, then, out of nowhere, the horns flair up as if it were some sort of musical exodus, you can feel the rain exploding with a mighty crash drenching you. It's one of the most stunning musical moments on record.

From here on in, the album never lets up. "Jet" is a McCartney classic and a concert staple. A fast paced, wild rocker with a blast your throat out chorus and classic riff. "Helen Wheels" is a crazed bulldozer of a number that will blow your speakers out if played too loudly. This is Paul at his most raucous. "Let Me Roll It" is a blueslier number, a great love song that remains a concert showstopper. "Bluebird" and the lovely "Mamunia" provide the more mellow moments here, but do not drag down the album at all. The vitriolic "No Words" is a raw, gutsy ballad with some of Paul's most cynical and best lyrics ever. "Picasso's Last Words" is a three part chronicling of the last hours before the passing of the famous artist, complete with a singalong chorus and French interlude. The closing "Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five" is an out and out musical extravaganza complete with intense instrumental breaks and some fine piano work by Sir Paul. The one clunker is "Mrs. Vanderbilt", and even that's fine for what it is.

Disc 2 is the real treat. You get Paul performing various renditions of certain tracks (including several different variations of the title track), live performances, and tour rehearsals (including a blistering version of "Jet). The interviews detailing the arduous but enjoyable recording process is a thrill. To hear Paul as well as people like Geoff Edwards, Christopher Lee, James Coburn and many others give their input. The most entertaining interview by far comes from none other than a man who is to cinema what Paul is to music, the legendary Dustin Hoffman, whose fantastic detailing of his influence on "Picasso's Last Words" is a joy to listen to. Paul and Dustin should collaborate more often.

The booklet and photo spread are excellent bonuses, and this is an album all music fans need to have.

As far as Paul McCartney's career away from The Beatles was, this was good it gets. The cd is great from Top to Bottom and a classic rock cd and deserves a spot in any classic rock collection. Truth be known when I was much younger 17; me and my friend would have a contest who could roll one the best before Paul could say Let Me Roll It in my most favorite tune on the cd, but it was an album back then.

If Paul will be remembered for anything post-Beatles, it's this album. Even though he had to go all over creation to record it, the trip was obviously worthwhile, bringing forth gems like "Helen Wheels," "Jet," and the title track. Everything was in place, the melodies, the pop smarts, and a real studio production. The amazement was that Wings actually consisted of Paul and Linda with guitarist Denny Laine; Paul played most everything on the record. Regardless, it was his return--finally--to greatness. --Chris Nickson

3 out of 5 stars Pretty shallow..........2006-09-09

'Band On The Run' is usually considered the pinnacle of McCartney's post Beatles career, however, I found it to be rather dull.
What this album is, is an exercise in showmanship. McCartney could craft such finely detailed productions in the studio, the problem is, that behind all that high tech sheen, the songs just weren't that good.
Of course, 'Band on the Run', like all records, has some high points. The title track and the energetic "Jet" are the main highlights, as well as the rather beautiful melody of "Let me Roll It". "Picasso's Last Words" with it's sudden changes into parts of songs from the rest of the album and wonderful "Drink to me/drink to my health" chorus is a redemptive factor. But elsewhere on the album, one has to struggle to find anything attention grabbing or deserving of the high praise that the album gets.
The rest of the songs are dull and forgettable, utilising unoriginal rhythms and acoustic intrumentation, as well as very cliched melodies and vocals.
Isolated moments of McCartney's former genius linger in places on the album, but amongst all the silliness and shallow pop songs (Pop music sometimes being a life affirming style of music, despite being dismissed by many) the brilliant moments are too hard to find.

3 out of 5 stars Sir Paul, There are Wonderful Musical Ideas.. but Frustrating Terrible Production (No Edge!)... missing Page-like Production.......2006-02-01

Down below is a letter I've written to Paul... but first and foremost... I'd like to address Band On The Run on the whole....

A. With the exception of 'Bluebird' where Linda really obnoxiously stands out....Linda's flat vocals aren't as apparent here as they were in Ram so I'll give Band on The Run one more star.....

B. Like Ram... wonderful compositional ideas.... Paul just has NO idea how to produce a rock album......

C. Other than "Tug of War", The wonderful compositional ideas here make it his most Beatle-esque effort from a compositional point of view in part because this is one of Paul's most consistent concept albums.... all the songs kind-of interelate to eachother... but only kind of....

For the reasons above... I think this is why Band on The Run tends to be Paul's most appreciated album..... it's just too bad the production is bad....

One of my favorite parts of the album comes at the end of 'No Words' when a guitarist (who I believe is Denny Laine) whips out the guitar and just goes to town... but Paul fades it out way too fast........anyway, here's my letter to Paul..

Dear Sir Paul,
Art Garfunkel's solo stuff is shmaltzy... he's a lot like you in terms of being a "vocalist first!!!!" I love Art Garfunkel... he wasn't a hit 70s star like you but his albums were impeccably produced... Paul, when I get discovered, please consider allowing me to either re-record or atleast post-produce your masterpiece,
Band On The Run...thank you,
Your Biggest Fan, I mean it,
-Peter

5 out of 5 stars A must for your collection.......2005-09-06

If you do not have any Paul McCartney records or CD's, then you should HAVE Band On The Run and also Red Rose Speedway. These two records are his best as a solo act. I purchased these two CD's for my brothers birthday, who has many John Lennon and George Harrison recordings. Now his McCartney collection is complete, and all I had to do is purchase 2 CD's.

5 out of 5 stars ...AS PROUD AN ACHIEVEMENT AS ANY EX-BEATLE COULD MANAGE.......2005-02-05

At the same time most critics hastily revised their opinions overnight of McCartney with this album, he was still receiving prejudiced reviews in a few corners. Robert Hilburn (LA TIMES rock critic) reviewed this & Lennon's "Mind Games" side by side in 1974. Hilburn was quite charitable to Lennon (whose album was generally considered below-par for his stature) and giving him a "Yes" vote, and McCartney, "....still a 'No.'" Hilburn's minority opinion stated, "I can predict rather easily that 'Band On The Run' won't be remembered as anything more than a slight upturn, in what has been a steadily declining artistic barometer for McCartney."

I had a friend who grew up in LA, who sarcastically said that Hilburn probably even thought McCartney was (in some small way)to blame for Lennon's death. In any case, history has a way of speaking for itself: over 30 years later, the title track, as well as "Jet," "Helen Wheels," "Let Me Roll It," "Mamunia," "Nineteen-Hundred And EightyFive,"and "Bluebird" are still staples of classic-rock radio.

It is an album which possesses the necessary vision required to make a great album; indeed, there is a confidence & determination about McCartney's effort here that is most striking. Quite a few surprising touches here, too: "Helen Wheels" sounds astoundingly like a bona-fide BEATLES track. Could that really be Ringo drumming? And could that actually be Lennon, doing the falsetto harmony on top during the chorus? Certainly, McCartney's bass playing sees the track through almost singlehandedly and with real spontaneity (my favorite moment is when, after the second chorus, he fluffs a little attempt at a bass solo, then comes in one bar late for the third verse!). "Helen Wheels" would've been perfectly at home on the "White Album": indeed, when I listen to that album at home I like to have the present CD standing by in my changer and substitute it for one of the tiny throwaways (or better, "Revolution 9") that take up space in the Beatle album; I'd program "Helen Wheels" somewhere between "Birthday" and "Helter Skelter".

The title track has McCartney once again utilizing the otherwise-unrelated-song-linking device he developed in "Sgt. Pepper" and "Abbey Road," not to mention his "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" single. But "Band On The Run" impresses most notably by McCartney's admirable holding-back on the gradiosity, and saving the huge orchestra for the final "song."

"Jet," the last single involved here, is another magnificent rocker, one which could almost be interpreted lyrically as another response to Lennon's misdirected vitriol ("Let Me Roll It" is, of course, the other one here). The lyrics are quite vague, although--as the late pop critic Noel Coppage (in STEREO REVIEW) noted--could "Ah Mater/Want Jet to always love me..." be a little jab at Lennon's mother-fixation issue (i.e., "Want you to always love me")? And is "Jet" really another euphemism for "John"? Is the mater who "was a lady suffragete" really Yoko? Best NOT to ponder such things and enjoy the purely MUSICAL aspect of the track (not to mention the album), which was always McCartney's forte anyhow.

Many other pleasant musical touches crop up, as in Wings' tribute to the warmer portions of the planet in "Mamunia," "Mrs. Vandebilt" and "Picasso's Last Words," as well as the amusing little reprises of "Jet," "Mrs. Vandebilt" and the title song that crop up in several other tracks. Linda and associate guitarist Denny Laine more than do their share for the entire effort as well, and the final album constitutes a pretty poor excuse to label McCartney once again as the jerk who broke up the Beatles.

5 out of 5 stars Paul's best solo album.......2005-01-11

Everyone has their favorite Beatle. Some people love to complain about Paul's solo music, comparing it to John's. The fact is that each of the Beatles had their own style, and together they had a magical symbiosis. Separately they each pursued a solo career that simply solidified what we already knew.

So Paul's music is light hearted? Maybe even silly? Sure, but if you are like me and enjoy each Beatle for what they brought to the group, then this is a wonderful album. No you won't find deep soul searching here, just fun! And fun is what this album has in abundance.

So if you want to curse Paul for his naiveté, don't buy this album. If you loved the Beatles, and enjoyed each one for their individual talent, this is a fun solo album.

In my humble opinion it is Paul's best solo album, as he really spreads his "Wings" and you can hear the sense of freedom coming through loud and clear. Later albums seem to become too engineered, and never seem to have the same energy that this album has.

4 out of 5 stars Remastered masterwork?.......2005-10-21

For some reason, most of the 1970-1990 McCartney/Wings catalogue is now available in two versions: the Capitol CDs and the British remastered "McCartney Collection".

The British CD's offer, in many cases, more bonus tracks than the Capitol CD's: it's great to have the Helen Wheels (say bye bye!)/Country Dreamer single without scratches and pops.

The remastering of the British series is, to my ears, NOT a bonus. The signal has been compressed in such a way, that the average level is louder than on the Capitol CD's, although the peaks are not. The balance has changed: low and frequencies have been boosted, resulting in a somewhat muddy sound and a less focused midrange. This has also affected the stereo image, and I find the sound a bit tiring. To me, the Capitol CDs are sonically superior and closer to the original LPs.

I found the remastered sound a disappointment, not doing justice to the obvious care that went into the original production!

5 out of 5 stars Run With This Classic.......2005-06-26

Most people consider Band On The Run as the greatest achievement of Paul McCartney's solo career. With the high quality of songs, it's tough to argue that point. The title track is a mini masterpiece, going through four different musical passages, sharp lyrics, tight instrumentation and a top-flight vocal performance. "Jet" is a roaring rocker with a great horn section. "Bluebird" is a lush, beautiful ballad that Mr. McCartney is best known for. "Mrs. Vanderbilt" has a classic, pumping bassline that shows off what an inventive bassist Mr. McCartney is. The song has an infectious "ho, hey, ho" chorus that pops up later in the album. "Let Me Roll It" contains a fiery vocal performance and "Mamunia" is a pretty mid-tempo song with heavenly harmonies. "Helen Wheels" is ballsy rocker about his car and "Picasso's Last Words (Drink To Me)" is a simple song that could be a pub sing along. "Nineteen Hundred & Eighty Five" closes out the album and revisits the main musical themes that run throughout the album. Critics hailed the album upon its release and it was a strong comeback from the lackluster Red Rose Speedway. The album went to number one and became the first album in history to hit number one on three separate occasions and contained three top ten singles.

5 out of 5 stars Now if only I owned a convertible!.......2007-06-06

This might be the best "crank it up in your car" CD ever, particularly if you came of age in the 60's and 70's and like all the Beach Boys and other classics on this CD. The live recording quality is quite good, and it rocks all the way through. They're about a good as the artists they are covering.

4 out of 5 stars Live Papa.......2007-05-07

Having been a fan of this group since I purchased California Project some years ago I was unsure if the group could once again reach the level of excellence demonstrated in that album. To my surprise and given that this is a live recording the quality is excellent with smooth laying of tracks and that variation on a theme that is synonymous with live performances. If you like quality instrumentals mixed with excellent voacls then this is fantastic value. Highly recommended album.

5 out of 5 stars Outta Site!!!.......2004-09-05

I just got my copy of Papa Doo Run Run's newest CD "On The Beach". It's OUTTA SITE! These guys sound more like the Beach Boys than the Beach Boys do - and this album is LIVE! Yikes! - move over Mike Love. There's 25 songs here - half of them are BBs songs and the other half are pure gold Classic Rock! My teenage kids even love this CD - go figure! This is real feel good cruisin' music. PDRR's "On The Beach" has found a permanent home in the CD player in my car.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning sound. Tight performance. Papa Doo's best yet!.......2004-08-25

This is a live recording of Papa Doo Run Run's performance on the beach at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk in August 2003. If you haven't heard this band's Beach Boys-like vocal harmonizations, you will be shocked at the likeness. The performance is full of energy and captures well the live atmosphere in which it was recorded. I am amazed at the quality of the sound engineering of this live recording. The highs are crisp, the bass deep and taught, and the dynamic range astounding - a sure test of your audio system's capabilities! It's as close as you can get to actually being there! I would not hesitate to recommend this to anybody who likes "Surf" songs and "Classic Rock Beach Party" tunes!

5 out of 5 stars Impressive!.......2001-08-21

Great indie release from a indie band. I saw very little of them from VH1's Bands on the Run, but I didn't care too much for the remaining (and untimately winning) bands.

I get the impression that Josh Dodes could have gotten some lessons from Billy Joel or Elton John. There's good qualities of good music in here. Funk, blues, and insightful lyrics.

Don't let the lack of lead guitars fool you -- some of the greatest rock artists were led by pianists -- Jerry Lee Lewis, Billy Joel, Elton John and many others...

Hope to see more from Josh Dodes in the future...

Very cool CD. If you're looking for something different and especially if you're a fan of funk and keyboards. Great harmonies on the singing as well. Forget the silly TV show and check out a very original band and sound.

This cd is filled with a yuppy, pretentious, "i want to be funky and hip" sound. I bought it after the show 'Bands on the Run' first started, and although they were not even close to my favorite band on the show, I figured I would give them a try. Afterall, they are apparently a New York City bar band. I love those types of musicians. They ussually have a great sound, talent, and phenomenal lyrics. However, the Josh Dode's Band cd was rather poor in its skill level and lyrical content. Each song was the same as the last, in a variety of ways. My advice to a potential buyer is save your money until the band can afford to take some music lessons! There pretentiousness is comparable to the likes and skills of Jimi Hendrix etc... And their confidence in their lyrics is at the level (or so the band believes) of Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Eddie Vedder, Dan DeFeo and Billy Joel. Once again, save your cash. Go browse some of Billy joel cd's, or Dan DeFeo's 4 disc anthology if you want to get your moneys worth. Those guys have talent. These guys just think they are talented.

5 out of 5 stars Support an up-and-coming talent and buy this album!.......2001-07-17

I've dug Josh Dode's blend of funky, jazzy, piano driven rock ever since I sold him a computer years ago (it's VERY cool to see a fellow Temp slowly realize his potential!). While I truly enjoy his band's music, fans of Billy Joel will TRULY adore this album (which is not to say J.D. rips anyone off). If you don't end up buying this album PLEASE check them out if they play around you - their shows are cheap and all the members put their hearts into their work.

3 out of 5 stars An OK CD from an OK band.......2001-07-16

Like most people, my first exposure to Josh Dodes Band was through VH1's Bands on the Run. And while many of my fellow reviewers seem disappointed with the outcome of the show, I for one am pleased.

But let's put that all aside -- this is about music, not reality television. I like the catchy riffs and poppy vocals that JDB has to offer. However, I have found that if you listen long enough, one song blends into the next until it all seems like one big, mushy song. They could use a little variety in my humble opinion.

I give them three stars -- an average rating for an average band.
