An overlooked album.......2006-07-24
A solid album that may have been sterotyped by its first single, Muskrat Love. The album was produced by America and rivals their later work with George Martin. It was their third album (hence the name "Hat Trick") and was actually a bit of a let down after their first two albums (America and Homecoming) had been huge hits. This album was a moderate hit in the US in 1973 peaking at 28 on the album charts. This album was their most ambitous effort to date. They run the gammit on this one, from harder rock (Green Monkey), to soft pop (She's Going To Let You Down), to folk rock (Windwave) and everything in between (Hat Trick). They make more use of strings than on their any of their previous work. If you are an America fan this album is a must.

America lose focus of their strengths.......2007-03-03
America's first album from 1972, the self-titled one, was a masterpiece. This is the third album (as the title suggests) from 1974. So what's it like?
I find that this band have very rarely focused on what they are good at, that is acoustic pop. Too often they have tried to be an eerie, progressive rock band, a funk band, an adult contemporary band and what not. Only the self titled album, some of it's folow up (homecomming) and 'Human Nature' from about 25 years later deal with what America are all about, country guys singing about countryside and birds and how we could all live a better life if we relaxed more.
The problem with "Hat-trick" is that it doesn't play to America's strengths, at all. It tries to be a progressive rcok album and mixes in all these airy-fiary psuedo-satanic lyrics into their music. Like the 8-minute title track is about a broken teenage love affair, but then they start saying "You're a bat out of hell", but it doesn't work. If you're going to sing about "Bats out of hell" sing it with conviction, like Dewey sings on something like "Hangover", don't sing all soft. I mean they are a soft-folk rock band trying to sing about scary monsters getting you in the middle of the night.
On the plus side you get the tracks on the Greatest hits album; "Muskrat Love", "Rainbow Song" and "She's Gonna Let You Down", all vintage 70's pop. I can't remember anything memorable from the other songs. "Green Monkey" and "Molten Love" try to sound so scary, but don't. "Willow tree lullaby" is the best of the rest but doesn't feel like much more than a card-carrying folk track that feels rather throw-away. Overall I would give the album about 3/10 (1.5 stars)
They never really recovered from poor directional decisions, though have made some pretty good music since, though the best album since their first album is surely "Human Nature".
That bitchin' done, don't hesitate to add this one to your collection and I hope you enjoy it, because, why did they make the album? For someone out there to enjoy themselves while they listened to it. This "old scrooge" didn't, but hopefully you do.
America's finest.......2006-11-27
This was not my first America recording but it was my favorite and remains so. Wiith the exception of M. Love, the much maligned single (silly tune...nice melody and production), this is the most consistantly interesting America record. other records of there's seem less consistantly satisfying somehow. I find that HT holds up pretty well. They stretch out a bit on this one, which is refreshing in todays world of packaged pop. But hey, I recognize that you can't say in a Rolling-Stones-sorta-way that this band ROCKS! That's like comparing apples and oranges though. They do write a well crafted tune. Nice voices, solid playing. George Martin would not have produced them for nothing. Highly recommended.
"Melodious Evolution".......2006-11-26
Taking the proverbial leep of faith, "America" steps out on their own to produce this third album with no inhibitions! "Hat Trick" is distinctively different from their debut album simply "America" or "Homecoming" yet is filled with lush overtures and sometimes complex arrangements like that of the title track. "Wind Wave" is very flowing and the string arrangements for this cut are stupendous. "She's Gonna Let You Down" and "Rainbow Song" are also excellent!!! Do not be fooled by the critics. You can not compare this particular work to any of the previous or post 70's era!!! Give it a listen!!!
America's "Pet Sounds"!.......2006-05-27
Not much to add to what has already been said. It's just quite amazing that they self-produced this gem. There is some delicious production here. Perhaps they didn't need George Martin to come in at all the following year.
Do not be too judgemental about "Muskrat Love" - just because C&T made it a mega-hit later on. Listen to it again with an open mind. It's a lovely arrangement too. I'm curious about its inclusion though. Did Warner's need to promote a potential radio hit? It's the only song not written by the boys, but they do make it 'theirs' (not unlike "Head and Heart" from the previous album).
It saddens me that this effort has not had the commercial success it deserved. There's not a bad tune on this record (just as their two previous albums). Later on, like during the declining years from 1976 and on their was quite a bit more "filler" material. But if you're a fan like me, you will explore some great songs from the forgotten later years.
My only recommendation is that this material gets remastered. The sound is overall fine and the ear adjusts to the close balance, but it needs just a hint of more air around the sound like wonderfully sounding "Homecoming" album - especially with all of this incredible production. Overall, Not bad at all for a simple guitar-based band. Not bad indeed!
(By the way, on a final note, I have burned car copies from the store bought CD's. Homecoming and Hat Trick fit nice and snuggily together on to one CD, as well as Holiday and Hearts - AND - Hideaway with Harbor. Give it a shot for yourself!)
desert songs.......2005-03-29
in 1974 i was lying on a beach in rio de janeiro. missing the U.S.(america!), when on my little transistor came a song that blew my mind. it was RAINBOW SONG and to this day its still one of my all-time favorite songs. tom scott's saxophone at the end is truly amazing. it wails. upon arriving back to this wonderful country i bought the album, it was my first america album. although i quickly filled out my collection with their first two and subsequent more pop hooked albums this one stands as a special one. it captures the desert and a western loneliness in sequenced splendor. their MUSKRAT LOVE is the only one i can stomach and WINDWAVE is america at their most beatle-esque. in my opinion, their third was a charm.

Great Blend of Irish/Mexican Music.......2001-05-02
"The Mollys" are the best country/folk/Celtic/Mexican band from the Southwest, and quite possibly, in the country. For years I had the pleasure of seeing their live performances when I lived in Tucson, AZ, and this early CD of theirs with the band's original lineup does a great job capturing their exuberant performances. Where else can you hear one of the lead singers, a Mexican-American lass no less - sound like a county gal from Galway? If you're open to listening to a distinctively fresh sound, then buy this CD ....
Great music.......1999-07-20
I had the opportunity to see the Mollys live, and bought this CD. Great mix of different influences - Irish, Mexican, loved it.

Now THIS is songwriting talent!.......2002-11-05
Bob Childers is THE man at the foundation of Red Dirt Music. It's pretty much impossible to find a dirt band in Texas or Oklahoma that hasn't recorded a cover of Bob's or claimed him as a mentor. His songs are perhaps most easily described as "Dylanesque," but are much earthier.
It's hard to miss and even harder to forget the warmth of Childers' smile or the "seen it all" look in his eyes. That same warmth and experience comes through soulfully when you hear his words crooned in his own voice.
If ever there was music for sitting under a tree with a cold brew and watching the sun set over the prairie, then this is it.
