Innamorata
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Music is a battlefield, and Benatar is a survivor with enough integrity not to coast on past glories. Here she and inamorato Neil Geraldo cowrite 11 new tunes that escape the '80s by virtue of a more acoustic-based sound and the unexpected violin fills of Allison Cornell. "River of Love" is the anthemic rocker, "Purgatory" boasts a subtle Latin lilt, and her working girl fans will cheer along with "I Don't Want to Be Your Friend." --Jeff Bateman

Pat's Passion.......2006-10-11
I'll start off by saying that if you are a fan of the eclectic Pat, Pat who did albums such as "Tropico", "Seven the Hard Way", & even "True Love", this record is for you.
Neil Giraldo (guitarist/husband/producer) & Pat both manage to draw together a focused record based in folk, latin, rock, & soul textures. "Innamorata" is a winner & finds Pat secure in her lyrics & voice.
Thematically, this is probably the most unified album Pat has done in quite sometime. Many of the songs deal with relationships, going through the phases of intense affection & then dissatisfaction. But, unlike the meandeing anger of "Innamorata's" follow-up 2003's "Go!", there is an world weary experience to the songs here. As if Pat put her own relationship struggles into these songs, which brings them across as genuine & passionate, rather than tired & done.
Soundwise, many of the songs are based within mid-tempo or ballad settings ("Papa's Roses"), or can pick up the pace & surprise a listener by rocking out ("Strawberry Wine", "River of Love"). Many of these mix in the folk & latin textures I spoke of very well, keeping them subtle, but close enough to the surface of the song to add flavor.
Vocally, Pat proves again why her monicker as just a "rock singer" pigeonholes her talent. This woman's voice is full of passion & conviction, sporting a control (over pitch) rarely seen.
Overall, a much more solid effort than 1993's "Gravity's Rainbow" & (as stated) 2003's misfire "Go!". Neil & Pat sound fresh here & manage to maintain why they have crafted such timeless music since 1979.
Highly recommended!
One of Pat's BEST.......2006-07-11
I got my first Pat Benatar album at the age of 4. Yes that is right 4. The album was "Get Nervous" when I got older, I purchased the albums prior. Needless to say, I own all of her albums and "Innamorata" is one of my favorites. It has been a constant in my CD player since its release. Pat's vocals are as other reviewers have mentioned in tip top form. She can sing any genre of music and still sounds great!! I for one enjoyed her "True Love" album. Yes, as one reviewer mentioned she would sound good singing country as well. She sang on CMT's crossroads a few years back with Martina McBride and they sang each others songs. I would buy Pat's album even if she went country. She has the type of voice that is good as I mentioned for any genre of music. Anyway..... If you haven't purchased "Innamorata" yet. Do so. You will not be disappointed!!!!
This album is fantastic.......2005-11-12
I'm just putting in a review to add a 5 star rating. This album is fantastic.
Wonderful but a bitter tale.......2004-01-17
Absolutely a beautiful sounding performance. "Down to the River" rocks as only Pat can. Lyrics though are depressing throughout...very well crafted but almost every song is angry, sad or bitter. Check out "Pappas Roses" another true tale of neglect from the author of "Hell is For Children." I loved it but might be to painfully introspective for some.
Is Ms. Benatar playing 'musical' chairs AGAIN?!.......2003-05-17
I can't figure out what Pat is doing these last 10 years with her music?? Since 1991 she has done one 90 degree musical turn around after the next with each album up to this one... TRUE LOVE was BIG BAND (YOU can keep that one... yuck), GRAVITY'S RAINBOW was more screeching guitars, angst lyrics and bouncy ballads and NOW INNAMORATA I would liken to folky/rock/not quite adult contemporary?!?! INNAMORATA is not a bad album. If my opinion counts it is the only one worth buying since '91 and that isn't saying a great deal... Her voice as usual is in top form but the material does make one recollect in a nostalgic way the longing for that appeal she captured years ago. PAPA ROSES is a excellent song as is STRAWBERRY WINE and ANGRY... DIRTY LITTLE SECRETS is good as well since she does STILL have quite a vocal range from tough as knuckles to the airy operatic... Most of the other songs are alright such as PURGATORY and I DON'T WANT TO BE YOUR FRIEND but the other just sound folky and cheesy... And I LOVE MS. GIRALDO even still but her musical choices just leave me scratching my head as to what awaits us 'unsuspecting' fans in the next go around??? COUNTRY... I BEG U MS. BENATAR-GIRALDO... NOOOOOOO!!!!! I have no doubt she MIGHT pull that one off without a hitch but do we really need a cd titled "PAT BENATAR DOES IT COWBOY STYLE" and get your minds out of the gutter,,, geez.... 1. LOVE IS A RODEO 2. TREAT ME RIGHT OR I'LL HOG TIE YA 3. THE YEE-HAW SONG 4. FIRE AND ICE AND COWPATTIES 5. WE LIVE FOR LOVE AND THE TWO STEP 6. I NEED A LOVER AND A PICKUP TRUCK and so on but you get my drift... I think she is sampling all sorts of styles and I can't fault her that... Not a bad album just different... Still good singing it is just the material is not up to par as it used to be... you decide!

Customer Reviews:
The best version we'll ever get?.......2006-09-26
I agree with both reviewers below: this 1977 performance of Andrea Chenier is the best studio version, and given the absence of tenors with Domingo's charisma, it may be the best we can expect for a long time. but this isn't just the familiar Domingo-Milnes show. By a long stretch Scotto is the best Maddalena I've ever heard. Even though she never had the strong chest tones of a true verismo soprano like Tebaldi, Milanov, or Magda Olivero, Scotto had the right attitude--she seems to be tearing her heart out. Milnes is blustery, as usual, but domingo couldn't be better as the ardent Chenier, and Levine's vigorous pacing helps to disguise the weaknesses in the music (although an audience favorite, this opera is disdained by critics, one of whom called it a garbage can filled with verismo cliches).
Among the competition, I'm aware of the Callas mono recording, a live aircheck in dreadful sound, and the Chailly-conducted set on Decca with Pavarotti and Caballe, which features the tenor is less than best voice and the soprano a bit too droopy for my tastes. So this RCA set holds it onw.
A bit shallow, yet still thrilling.......2002-02-09
This recording came near the end of the famous Domingo/Milnes RCA recordings when they made a flurry of operas with Price, Caballé and Scotto. Here they are paired with Scotto, and led by the young James Levine with the National Philharmonic which was much used at that time by RCA and Decca.
The main reasons for purchasing this album is for the leading trio in their prime, and for the enthusiastic conducting of Levine. Dramatically, it's more enthusiastic than anything else, and that can be heard right from the opening bars. The freshness and vitality is quite brilliant, and the voices are all healthy and vigorous. However, a first impression only lasts so long, for this is basically a good, but routine Chenier that merely scratches the surface of good theater. For a late 70's recording, it's quite good and worth owning, but it lacks the dramatic punch to put it over the edge.
Perhaps the most notable reason to hear this is for a document of how exciting Levine's conducting used to be, before his Bayreuth years and subsequent deification at the Met. An early review stated that this Chenier sounded as fresh as if the ink were still wet on the score. What a contrast to what we have today....
Best studio version.......2001-02-23
Here we have Domingo & Milnes at their absolutely best. Scotto also is great, landing somewhere between Tebaldi and Callas. It's heard from the very start, Gérard's "son sessant'anni..." gives the tone to the whole performance - blood red and white hot as it is. Thereafter we're spoilt with at least ten - how often are there such a number in one opera - of melodic, dramatic and not least lovely tunes - here greatly sung by some of the last centurys greatest voices. Although I find Bjorling, Corelli and Bastianini great in their respective parts, this is THE over all best studio performance. Feel perfectly assured with this one - the only one to compete is a obscure live version with Del Monaco & Callas on the record label of Melodram (or 'Verona'). Nore Pavarotti's, nore Carreras' versions comes even close to the impact and theatrical reliability of this recording.

Album Description
Experience a side of Handel that's rarely heard these days: exquisitely refined vocal and instrumental chamber music, including three cantatas from his early years in Italy. On The Virtuoso Handel, you'll encounter the type of intimate music making that small, privileged audiences of discerning connoisseurs enjoyed during Handel's sojourn in Rome from 1706 to 1709.
Italy at the start of the 18th century was obsessed with singing. It is in this vocally-infused spirit that The Virtuoso Handel was conceived.
The Chicago Baroque Ensemble and soprano Patrice Michaels previously collaborated on Cedille's acclaimed A Vivaldi Concert ("A stellar level of artistry." - Cleveland Plain Dealer) and The World of Lully ("All this virtuosity invites repeated listening." - Early Music America). Here they perform secular cantatas on themes of romantic love, history, and mythology, including the dramatic and harrowing La Lucrezia. These challenging pieces showcase Ms. Michaels' silvery voice, lively interpretations, and exceptional mastery of florid Baroque passagework and ornamentation.
Also included are instrumental arrangements of arias from three of Handel's Italian operas: two for flute and strings, with irresistible "coloratura" playing on the transverse flute, and one for solo harpsichord. Completing the program is a charming Sonata in C Major for viola da gamba and harpsichord, which casts both players in virtuoso roles.
