Liars
Editorial Reviews
Album Description
"Liars" is Todd Rundgrens first all new studio album in a decade. Rundgren recorded, produced and mixed this exciting new album at his home studio in Hawaii. He wrote all 14 songs, performed all the vocals and played all the instruments himself.
"Liars" tells the truth: Todd Rundgren has returned with one of his strongest efforts ever.

Sound effects and overdramatics........2007-07-12
Utah-based post-hardcore giants The Used are back for a third run with longtime producer/auxiliary band member John Feldman. While the loyalty the band shows to the decidedly hard-working sometime Goldfinger frontman, and the preservation of the mentor/student relationship they share is commendable, it's hard not to wonder what the group might sound like without Feldman at the controls. His squeaky-clean production is predictably intact on 'Lies For The Liars' as is his trademark employment of superfluous sound effects where appropriate. Only, this time it's as if every vacant space was filled with some oddball sample or sound effect, almost to the point where it actually detracts from the songs. In fact, one might actually wonder how much of 'Lies' was crafted by The Used and how much Feldman was responsible for.
As for the songs themselves, there's nothing fundamentally wrong with them. In fact, most of 'Lies' is remarkably solid. Hard-driving 'bangers like 'Pretty Handsome Awkward' and 'Hospital' are some of the heaviest, most groove-laden songs the band have ever written while the romantic balladry of 'Earthquake' and 'Find A Way' clearly display why frontman Bert McCracken is one of contemporary punk's best vocalists. Even the rhythm section has become more prominent (see the disco breakdown in 'Hospital' or the start-stop tempo changes in 'Wake the Dead').
In the end, the worst thing that can be said for 'Lies'(aside from Feldman's inability to comprehend the word "moderation") is that The Used are still relying on the same formulas and song structures that comprised their first two albums. 'Lies', although flawed and far from grounbreaking, remains a solid, enjoyable hard rock album.
And you call yourself a fan?.......2007-07-12
Wow. I don't know which amazes me more - the album or the response it's getting by "fans" of The Used. Do you kids kiss your mothers with those lips?
First off, I have to get something off my chest about some of the reviews this CD has recieved. Are you guys deaf? This CD is fantastic. Exclamation point, exclamation point, bold, underline, exclamation point. I must say, having listened to the first two albums, "Lies for the Liars" definately wasn't what I expected. Much like Linkin Parks latest CD "Minutes to Midnight," I had to listen to the CD three or four times to get used to the changes the band has made as they have evolved. But by no means was I disappointed. What difference does it make if they're music is slightly more emo than what you normally listen to. If you think you're a fan and then you ditch a band because they're new music has a new "label" (label as in emo/punk/goth/etc, not as in music label) then you're NOT a fan. A fan would stick by their band and grow and evolve as the band does. Maybe you just need to grow up.
As for the album itself, "Lies for the Liars" is an excellent show of The Useds talent. The two ballads are beautifully written and give the album a softer touch (that apparently some people can't handle.) The rest of the album is upbeat and fun to listen to. If you truly like The Used, give "Lies for the Liars" a listen.
Not The Used we know, but it's not as bad as some people make it out to be!.......2007-07-09
Great CD. My personal favorite is The Bird and The Worm, which is very good lyrically and musically. I'll rate the tracks as follows:
The Ripper - 5/5 Very good song, one of their best if I might say so myself.
Pretty Handsome Awkward - 3/5 I rate this one lower because the music sounds the same as The Ripper with a couple changes. Makes you think you're listening to the same song. However, still a good song.
The Bird and The Worm - 5/5 Obviously a very good song. My favorite on the cd. Very good beat, and very catchy.
Earthquake - 4/5 Your typically song about a boyfriend/girlfriend leaving/breaking up. Not bad, and every cd needs one of these right?
Hospital - 4/5 Almost sounds like emo. You know about death and such. Pretty decent song.
Paralyzed - 4/5 Another good song, very catchy tune if you ask me, could listen to it over and over.
With Me Tonight - 3/5 Another song about a boyfriend/girlfriend. Guess it's ok, the music is basically drums, trumpets, and clapping.
The Dead - 4/5 Here's a good song definately worth listening to. Very good music, that goes great with the good lyrics.
Find a Way - 2/5 This sounds like a song avril lavigne would sing. Not a song that The Used should sing. Reminds me of springtime with flowers blooming and animals everywhere.
Liar Liar - 5/5 Good song, very good tune, catchy tune. One of the better ones on the cd. Careful though, cuss words in this one ;)
Smother Me - 2/5 I didn't know that Alicia Keys joined them. Piano music with soft singing. Not one of their better songs. Sounds like something you would have played at a wedding.
I give the cd 4 stars. If it wasn't for two of the songs sounding like they needed to be sang by Avril Lavigne, and 3-4 sounding more like Panic at The Disco, than Alternative Rock it would get 5 stars, but I don't have anything against emo so I still give it 4 stars, just if I want to listen to panic at the disco I'd put their cd in, not The Used. Not The Used we know, but it's not as bad as some people say.
The Used.......2007-07-05
Awesome CD. As for the actual quality of the physical CD its self... Ok that's boring, but The Used did a great job on this one!
AMAZING!!.......2007-07-04
I am a HUGE fan of The Used and this album DID NOT disappoint me. Out of all their songs, I have yet to find a bad one. My favs on this cd are:
Pretty Handsome Awkward
Earthquake
The Bird & the Worm
Hospital
Paralyzed
Wake the Dead.
To tell the absolute truth it is very hard to pick a favorite. This album has the perfect mix of screaming and slow songs. I also noticed that they used more experimental sounds. I would have liked a little more hardcore screaming like on their first album, but what he does scream works. I recommend this record HIGHLY.

Staring at a great band.......2007-03-25
3 years before the superb Return to Cookie Mountain, this real alternative band in the musical panorama debuted with this forewarning EP, already filled with a sort of magnetism and a unique vocal roll, as seen by the cover of Pixie's "Mister Grieves" - the bonus track. "Satellite", "Staring at the Sun" and "Young Liars" are songs to listen to over and over again, truly the best suggestion I can give to everyone these days.
Mediocre........2006-07-10
I wanted to believe the hype.
This band specializes in leading listeners on a dreary journey to nowhere. Although nowhere is only about four or five minutes down the road, it seems to take forever.
Some people dig that vibe. I don't. It seems that most people who prioritize music over fashion don't dig that either.
TV On The Radio is like a melancholy version of a bad Saturday Night Live sketch. Every song on this record feels as if it's based on one half-baked, half-decent idea, repeated ad-nauseum.
They purposefully build tension with no release, and manage to do so in an uncompelling and uninteresting fashion. While listening to this record, listeners may find themselves expecting any one of the songs to finally "go somewhere". This is a bad idea, as they're not big on providing 'Pay-Off'. They are much more interested in monotonous redundancy. Some people will love that, but be warned if that's not your thing. Heroin addicts, trust-fund urbanites and pretentious scenester stoners may find a lot to like on this record.
The rest of us will have to wait as the band marginly improves and, with any luck, lets go of their impulse to purposefully avoid being any good. Either that, or we can avoid listening to them, and find some other critics's darling to fawn over.
.....oh yeah, and their live show is pretty boring.
There are some positives:
TVoTR's 'hit' cover of Mr. Grieves is a very well realized (novelty) track that finds the band at its most sincere.
Tunde Adebimpe has a good command of his own voice, and he contributes predominantly to any sense of uniqueness attributed to the band.
Kyp Malone seems to be a nice guy.
That's about it.
Great Organic Sound....overall ,GREAT DEBUT!.......2006-05-06
This group has got to be one of the most amazing bands ever!!!Their debut should have gotten more than five stars, or even six....IT DESREVES TEN!!! Also if you did'nt see this band live ,I ENCOURAGE ANYONE TO SEE THEM LIVE!!!
Buy some Grado SR-60s and listen to this, over and over. .......2006-02-21
An incredibly remarkable EP that stands out as one of that years finest releases.
In my opinion 'Young Liars' is superior to 'Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes'. If you buy this you won't need the other.
Is there a sixth rating star guyyyzzzz???.......2005-01-28
Oh my, i love this band and i most definitely loved this EP.
What a beautiful masterpiece of music and melody.
The vocal range of this band is amaze-me, and along with the catchy and breath taking melodies is just in-escapably GOOD!The lead's voice is a beauty, he should DEFINITELY be getting insurance for that...
Satellite is fast paced with a choppy beat and characteristic "oohhhs"
"Your voice, is like a satellite, spinning next to me"
I love the way this band can take vocals right up to falcettos and maintain such graceful audio-pleasure :)
Staring At The Sun is my favourite song on this EP, because it embodies the meaning of this band's name itself! This song is indeed TV on the Radio...as in, listening to a movie soundtrack. Gorgeous and melodic, eerie and heart wrenching, what an experience to listen to this song...please listen to the sample...there'd best BE one!!!
Blind doesn't break the picture perfect quality of the song before it, this time TV takes on a more brooding approach and the harmonies are top notch, mate!
Young Liars is a great finish, and unfortunately i didn't get the Pixies remake because i got my copy burned off the net :p CHEAP!!!
I shall most definitely be looking at getting their album...:)

amazing.......2007-06-24
i must say, i'm a bit jaded when it comes to trying a new artist based on one song that i've heard on the radio. i mean, how often is it that the rest of the songs can hold up? sometimes it sounds like the 1 or 2 songs were written by someone else, there is that much difference in quality/goodness. i hate that.
the used took me totally by surprise.
every song is horribly catchy, unique (don't you hate it when all the songs sound like a mutation of each other?), and expertly sung with great lyrics. innovative, strange lyrics. thought provoking even. thank god. this album will hold up to MANY re-listenings.
singing style... (which again, was impressive) has elements akin to the way patrick, from fall out boy, sings in their "from under the cork tree" album. he also has excellent range, and versitality.
bully for them, this album is awesome.
best money i've spent in ages.
Amazing.......2007-06-11
I waited a long time for this album, just like a lot of fans, and I'll tell you, it was definitely worth the wait. The album differs in many ways to the first two albums - They tried something new - And they made it work. 'Lies For The Liars' is incredible. I completely recommend you check this out.
Supercalifragilisticexpialidishish!.......2007-06-11
This CD, the 3 studio album from the awesome Utah quartet, The Used. Each song has its own sound, and attitude. It's got great lyrics, very catchy. The music is...indescribable (the good kind) I rate this album a sideways 8(infinity) out of 5.
Anyone who loves music will love this album.

Album Description
DRUM'S NOT DEAD was partly inspired by the LIARS' relocation to Berlin from NYC after their 2004 album They Were Wrong, So We Drowned. From clanging guitars, martial beats, dense drones and pulverizing rhythms to high dreamy harmonies, off-kilter guitar lines and soothing samples of waves lapping, this is LIARS' finest, fullest and most unexpected album to date. Shredding all past reference points, DRUM'S NOT DEAD sees LIARS taking another seismic step forward, switching continents, seizing new musical territory and expanding their audio-visual ambitions. DRUM'S NOT DEAD comes with its own cinematic sister project - a DVD, with 3 film versions of the album, directed by band members Angus Andrew, Julian Gross & filmmaker Markus Wambsganss. Each film is comprised of videos for every track on the album: 36 videos total. From backstage travelogues to surreal animation and mini sci-fi epics, Liars document the process of recording, touring, then visually reinventing each track. 2 disc package - 1 CD / 1 DVD.
Customer Reviews:
They get better and better.......2007-07-12
Everyone who gave this record a bad review will eat their words, eventually. This record is genre shattering.
Rushing to meet the future. Why are people so afraid of change? How dull would you be if you kept repeating yourself?
This record grows and grows...and it expects the listener to as well. "Pedestrian" listeners want things hand fed to them
because their attention span is so commercially castrated. I found a refreshing expansion of emotion on this record.
Every step of the way LIARS has taken me on their journey of freedom of expression.
I love when music makes me rewire my expectations of modern culture.
BRAVO LIARS.
Relevancy Schmelevancy.......2007-01-31
To argue whether a band makes "relevant" music is tedious and fruitless...Music is something people spend their disposable income on, making it in no way a necessity...Whether or not a band's music is "relevant" is only determined by whether YOU feel like it's worth having in your record collection.
This album is interesting, challenging but NOT GREAT...The standout tracks are:
Track 1: Be Quiet Mt. Heart Attack!
Track 3: A Visit From Drum - FEATURES A TOTALLY FUN AWESOME DRUM PART!!!
Track 5: It Fit When I Was a Kid - DRIVING RHYTHMS WITH DIRGE-LIKE VOCALS
Track 12: The Other Side of Mt. Heart Attack - MORE OF A "STRAIGHT AHEAD" POP SONG
The hype-factor/hip factor, DVD art films, and the fact that Thom Yorke has given the album his stamp of approval mean virtually nothing here.
I could do without some of noisy-ness and feedback (which in some cases are ENTIRE SONGS). I dig the singer's vocals, and the instrumentation is sloppy but pretty okay...I never get the feeling that Liars have sonically captured anything too special throughout the disc, though.
I read somewhere that Liars may record music of a more "straight ahead" nature, in the future. I hope this is the case, cause I enjoy the more conventionally melodic moments this album offers. Perhaps Drum's Not Dead will be part of an evolution towards a new a even more evocative sound.
Crummy concept, junk album.......2007-01-12
this is a sad attempt for the Liars at taking their sound in a new direction. It comes off as a hearted rip off of "Animal Collective's" "Feels" album, which was amazing. This disc doesn't live up to the hype surrounding it, and conventional wisdom is starting to tell me that Pitchfork has gotten too big for there britches.
Return of the real Brooklyn rock?.......2006-12-16
I caught this band a few years ago at siren fest on Coney Island, where I happened to be standing next to a fat middle aged man who, before the Liars came on, kept shouting "YEAHH! The return of the real Brooklyn rock!!" Needless to say, I was looking forward to seeing this band.
Liars came on and were extremely pretentious (no surprise there), and in my opinion.. annoying. After that show I wrote them off basically until hearing "they were wrong..." which is a tough listen but ultimately rewarding and original.
Drum's Not Dead, however, what a great release! This is the first review I've written for Amazon, and probably the last, that's how much I'm behind this one. First off, the production on this is absolutely perfect, they obviously spent a lot of time on the sonics of this record and it shows... so much so that you won't even notice when you find yourself bobbing your head wildly, that some songs don't even contain a discernable (spelling? haha) melody.. the songs just sound that good. Every track nails its mood perfectly. Hearing this is like having sex with a beautiful witch (or maybe.. warlock? ha!).
amazing direction for liars.......2006-11-30
the first liars album i heard was "they were wrong so we drowned". i fell in love with it as well as the band. the subversive style was very tripped out and the melodies were pure magic. this album, while still, actually even more trippy than the precious album, is bliss.
the first three tracks alone blend together so wonderfully it could be one song.it is very different from their first "they threw us all in a trench and stuck a monument on top" and definately the band's most abstract album yet, but imo that is what is so great about it. it is such a great space out album, perfect for listening to on headphones at 3 in the morning when you cant get sleep.
i guess i can see why people or fans of their previous work wouldn't like this cd, but i dont really care because i probably dont share the same music interest with them anyway, "one man's trash is another man's treasure", right?
i still strongly recommend it, especially if your into music that has sex with your brain.

"Liars" is Todd Rundgren's first all new studio album in a decade.
Rundgren recorded, produced and mixed this exciting new album at his home studio in Hawaii. He wrote all 14 songs, performed all the vocals and played all the instruments himself.
"Liars" tells the truth: Todd Rundgren has returned with one of his strongest efforts ever.
Customer Reviews:
Todd still highly relevant in the music world.......2007-07-02
Todd Rundgren should be in the RnR Hall of Fame. His body of work is incredible. Not because the award itself is so important, but because Todd's music is so vital/important, that it needs to be exposed and re-exposed to the masses.
He has been largely ignored for far, FAR too long. He has continued to put out great music, and only TRULY die hard fans are aware of it. IT IS CRIMINAL!
Whats the big deal?.......2007-03-13
First of all let me say that I believe Todd is a fantasticly talanted artest. But...
...don't get suckered into the 5 star hype... I think the 2 I gave a bit generous.
Other unimpressed reviewers have expressed concerns about "F bombs" and social political messages. Not me, thats not the problem... The problem is... THE MUSIC IS NOT VERY GOOD.
Classic new Todd.......2007-01-30
From the first track, this album makes you appreciate the sheer song writing talent of Todd Rundgren. He may not be considered "mainstream,"
but those who follow his music will find this music uplifting, inspiring,
& thought provoking. His perspective on todays' culture & society is reflected in songs like "happyanniversary" and "soulbrother." And his mastery of musical arrangement is pure genius. When he sings "godsaid,"
it sounds like he truly is conversing with a deity. Listen to it at first for the melodies, then listen again for the lyrics. It has been enjoyable musically and intellectually to me.
Todd's Best Ever.......2007-01-10
It's very rare that the first listen through an elpee's worth of tunes that I love it right out of the box. This was one of those rare disks. I was concerned that he'd washed out, pushing 60, another burned out rock star that either lost his chops or just didn't care any more. How mistaken that notion was. Todd not only has created a very interesting musical piece, it's the best overall concept album I've ever heard. Todd takes on liars of all sorts. Political. Religious, family relationships, and did I mention Religious? Each and every song is very listenable, and each is a true Message song. So, if you're just looking for a good TR sound, buy this, ignore the lyrics, and enjoy yourself. If you're looking for it all in one package, this is it.
Todd Rundren's Liars is perfection........2006-08-23
Todd Rundgren has been one my favorite artists for over 30 years. He has always challenged me to feel and think through his music. Liars is a compilation of beautiful harmonies and sweet, soulful vocals. It has a mesmerizing quality that improves with each listen. Todd's biting wit and compelling wisdom is ever present. He hooks you with such beautiful songwriting while he challenges you to look inside yourself for the truth and God. He cuts to the bone at times. Time has not diminished Todd's edge. He is an inspiration and shines such a bright light in a dim world. Liars may be his best work to date.

Stop Whining.......2006-04-15
All the former fans of Liars and the MTVindie-loving music reviewers need to stop whining about this brilliant release by Liars. This album is an amazing combination of ritualim dissonance and pure creepiness, that makes for an edge-of-your-seat listen.
DON'T LISTEN TO THE NAYSAYERS.......2006-01-22
I am a huge sceptic these days. It really takes alot to wake me up and make me take notice anymore. Jaded? Bored with rock? Depressed at the state of music in general? Yes, that's me. Some will say, "Then why review anything Mr. Bummer?" I'll tell you why...This record is brilliant. Comparisons to PIL are ridiculous in my mind. And I don't lump the Liars in with the second generation new wave crap that's been flowing the last few years. Starting with this record (I actually didn't like their earlier stuff, so I consider this their first fully realized record), the Liars have become one of the elites in my book. I have heard the new one, due out in February '06, and it builds on this one even more. They have the inspiration and vitality of early Sonic Youth, without sounding derivative of anyone in particular. Come to this record with an open mind. Don't over-analyze it or compare it to some stuff from the eighties (even though I just did)...Just take them for what they are: three guys obviously having fun making some dark, visceral, beautiful music.
Similar to a noise generator to induce a confession. .......2005-06-24
I like The Liars "Monument"
Its not great. But its good at what it is, and its intended audience will definitely enjoy it.
That album gets better with age.
That being said, I don't know who would like this album.
This album is painful to listen to.
It makes you feel nauseous.
While I distrust music that I like the first time, I can't imagine ever liking this over time. Its grating, intentionally off beat, and makes you feel sick.
The only time I would use this CD is to haze pledges in a fraternity by making them listen to this on repeat for 8 hours. But as im not in a fraternity, and im not a cruel person, I have no use for this CD. I don't think you will either.
There's Always Room on the Broom for Liars (4/5).......2005-03-15
When Liars hit the music scene in 2001, the name of their album and song titles weren't the only thing that seemed a little peculiar to everyone. This was a band that had chewed up the mass of their influences and spit them out in an entirely new fashion. With only one record, they created a buzz that even they couldn't get rid of if they wanted to. Upon arrival of their unique debut release, They Threw Us All in a Trench and Stuck a Monument on Top, critics and fans alike were fast to realize Liars was stylistically similar to a lot of the other NYC-based bands revitalizing the late 70's/early 80's post-punk dance scene. Even so, while they were immediately pigeonholed into this category, they were able to add an edgy, almost avant-garde, boldness that the others were simply not exploring.
The same can also be said for They Were Wrong, So We Drowned. The only thing here that's similar to their debut is that the song titles and album name are still very unique (both albums start with the word `they'). With that aside, the primary thing you'll discover once you listen to this album is that things have drastically changed - for the better. The envelope has been moved in an entirely new direction, and the band wouldn't have it any other way. Liars take great pride in breaking out of the genre-defining boxes they're thrown in. In the same way Radiohead took an impeccable album like OK Computer and stepped into unfamiliar territory with Kid A, Liars have sidestepped the majority of their familiar styles and broken free towards new explorations. Now, I won't go so far as to say They Were Wrong sounds like Kid A, but it definitely gives me the same feelings I had the first time I heard that album.
There's a detached coldness that emanates in They Were Wrong. Perhaps it's due to the fact that a type of German witchcraft, known as Walpurgisnacht, inspired the album. Whatever the reason, the album is very dense, imaginative, and executed with chaotic precision. "Broken Witch" begins with disconnected electronics and a drum machine that has you immediately finding this record more electronic than it's predecessors. In many cases, the drums have been played live, recorded, and then manipulated to assist in this concept. "There's Always Room on the Broom" is a distorted beauty with its heavy microphone feedback and high-pitched vocals. The best track, "We Fenced Other Houses with the Bones of Our Own," is easily the most sinuous moment of the album, and simply impossible not to compare to the same approach Radiohead took on Kid A. The instrumental "Read the Book That Wrote Itself" is a collection of eerie keyboard sounds with ritualistic drumming and pencil writing. As with They Threw Us All In a Trench, the longest song, "Flow My Tears the Spider Said" is saved until the end of the album. Although I really tried to stay away from this comparison, I can't help but think it's strikingly similar in some ways to The Beatles "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." It's then slowly faded away to the sounds of birds and minimal instrumentation.
They Were Wrong, So We Drowned is an incredibly tight album, and it's surely going to be one of the year's first greatly admired albums. Each song is independent to the others, yet collectively this album is very cohesive. Since the songs all bare similarities in visual terms, I guess you could say it's a concept album of sorts. If breaking free from their own mold is this band's forte, then I imagine we are going to hear quite an array of sounds in future releases. One thing you'll always be assured of is that Liars show up to give a great and lasting impression whenever they enter the studio. They prove once again that even with their rotation of musicians, they are capable of taking the scene by the hair and utilizing their talents in every way possible to remain one of the most exciting bands around.
Guitars? We don;t need no stinkin' guitars!.......2005-01-21
The first Liars album "They threw us..." succeeded mainly because of the guitar driven beats. Not so on "Drowned". Kudos for the concept album, and to be sure, they have something, but a listenable something? Not really.

Holy crap.......2006-02-16
Probably the best album of its kind since Gang of Four's Entertainment! Forget Franz Ferdinand, the Futureheads, Bloc Party, and the virtually countless other bands ripping off Go4; this is fantastic. Liars are probably the only band doing this formula right AND nailing the attitude that should go along with it. Great stuff for the post-punk fan who's less than thrilled as to where the style's heading.
hooked on this one for over a year now.......2006-01-19
light, bouncey, fast and fun... sludgey, wet and creepy-- this record is totally visceral. there's speed to it, there's groove to it... its catchy, garagey and trashey. thematically dark for the most part, but never losing its sense of humor.
there's nothing technically stellar about any of the instrumentalists, so if you're into virtuosity then obviously you won't like this cd. maybe check out the dave matthews band. however if you like good song writing with that communicates mood and attitude quite effectively, this is a great record for you
it's only original if you know jack about music.......2005-03-02
While I respect their nihilistic musical outlook and punkish approach to making a satire of pop music, so far Liars have really only succeeded at being one of the new models of psuedo-intellectual pretension and avante-garde wankery. Let's face facts. No one could dispute that when John Cage was performing four minutes of pure silence or randomly plucking musical notes out of hat, that he had the musical right to, and, in his own way, was proving that anything could be music. But just because anything can be music (or art in general), doesn't mean that there can't be levels of quality. Anyone could do what Cage did (and countless of idiots who can barely play their instruments do---they call it noise), anyone could do what the SEx Pistols did (and tons of boring generic punk bands are now in the surplus of millions), and---if more people were aware of bands like Gang Of Four---anyone could do what Liars have done here. It's not original, it's not interesting, and there's no talent whatsoever put into it. Wake up, Liars fans. THe only way to make music that is truly interesting and different is too learn as much about music as you truly can---not the other way around. By knowing as much about music as is possible, you can thereby discern what has and hasn't been done, and as a consequence, pull off good music that is both intriguing and talented. If you want music that is truly nihilstic and insane, I suggest the all-over-the-place music of Mr. Bungle and John Zorn. If you want something that's more stylistically rock-based but maintains the same unorthodox unable-to-be-pigeonholed style, I suggest Thinking Fellers Union and Polvo. In the meantime, these underappreciated and truly forward-thinking bands will continue to get neglected because of no-talent hacks like Liars. You can almost hear someone saying "LIke, oh my god, these guys are so different because they don't care about their music and make a bunch of sloppy, half-assed songs." If you've ever said this, turn off your MTV2 and start doing some honest musical searching.
P.S.: Following your debut album up with a sophmore effort full of noisy ambience and experimental peices is not original. It was done with Sonic Youth's "Bad Moon Rising". Strait-up noise is boring anyway. ARtists like Merzbow have already drained that genre for all it's worth.
Sorry...I tried...I really did............2004-03-05
After reading the reviews for this album and hearing about it over and over from friends, I decided I would buy it and give it a listen. It seemed to be right up my alley....I am usually very pleased with anything that comes out on mute....So I listened...and listened and listened...I really wanted to like this disc...I tried....I really did...but this is so awfull...so boring...so completely unoriginal....Its been done 100 times before by better...much better...but then it wouldnt be too hard for anyone to do better than this....an excruciatingly painful listen...no redeeming quality what so ever.
These guys need to stop mimicing their influences and have an independant thought or two..then give it another go.
No, you're not Gang of Four.......2004-01-30
Brothers and sisters, there's a new sound rattling the streets of our beloved city. It's the sound of punk-funk revolution, returning the indie crowd to the glory days of John Lydon's Public Image Ltd. and Nick Cave's The Birthday Party. The genre is a distant cousin of electro-clash (which is now officially so ten minutes ago in indie circles), an incendiary mold of hardcore, avant-punk dynamics and pounding disco rhythms. It's like a bizarre orgy involving seminal 70s punk group Wire and seminal 70s disco superstar Donna Summer.
In one corner of the ring, we have damaged poets Liars. Their debut LP, They Threw Us In A Trench And Stuck A Monument On Top is a career-opening manifesto. Every single barked lyric is a fiery salvo, and likewise every single thrashed drumbeat is phlegm, spat into the face of anyone who doesn't care. Anyone who doesn't understand.
Opening track "Grown Men Don't Fall Into the River, Just Like That" (behold the massively pretentious song titles) begins with a bit of murmuring about how everybody needs a hobby. Or something like that. But this is merely foreplay and the track quickly explodes into a thunderous, pounding rhythm. Then, singer Angus Andrew (who is actually Australian) brings out the bomb - "We've got our fingers on the pulse of America!" he squeals, perhaps overoptimistically considering the recent Republican takeover of our country.
From there on, it just gets better. The record is equal parts earsplitting guitar noise, chunky funky bass and (gasp) danceable drum parts. "We Live NE of Compton" is a startlingly malicious piece of punk which seems to be grabbing the listener by the throat, shoving him against the wall and proceeding to beat the living daylights out of him. Then, it suddenly all ends, and Angus mournfully whispers "the city loves you." Wow.
Despite all this, easily the best moment on the record is when they unleash the synthesizers and go into full-blown Gang of Four style with "Mr. You're On Fire Mr." It's ridiculously catchy, computerized drum beats and silly "ooo--weee-oooh" sounds popping up where it sounds like guitar should be. In what is perhaps a nod to Nirvana, it begins with the soon to be immortal line "Do the twist!" before dissolving into an incredible call-and-response chorus.
However, all is not well in Liars' world. The record at times falls into self-indulgence - witness the 20 minute repeated loop that closes out final track "This Dust Makes That Mud." Also, while Angus and crew have agitprop grooves down-pat, they have not yet mastered the art of song writing. "Loose Nuts on the Veladrome," while powerful, holds the promise of highs that it does not attain due to the lack of nuance throughout the song.
These quibbles aside however, They Threw Us In A Trench And Stuck A Monument On Top is a promising document from a band that you know will keep on getting better. For now, it's enough to make us dance and think at the same time - and in these troubled times, what more could you ask for?

On this split EP, the two Brooklyn groups cover each other's compositions and it sounds like seven stone giants sipping sherry and hog's blood in a hot tub. Genteel recreation and sensual delight. Arena Rock label. 2002.

Most Exciting Release of 2002.......2003-04-14
Forget Interpol or pretty much anything touted as the next "big thing" or a prime exponent of the "Brooklyn scene"; this is where the action is. Oneida and Liars are two of the most promising bands that exist right now. People who say otherwise don't understand them. The Liars tracks on this disc are among their best, a clear departure from their earlier danceable material into more experimental terrain. Oneida's are pure power. Buy it.
