When one thinks of musicals from Hollywood's golden age, the initials MGM come almost instantly to mind. Indeed when veteran song-and-dance man George M. Cohan was negotiating a film based on his colorful life story, his first choice was Metro--until a falling out with studio chief Louis B. Mayer. But L.B.'s loss eventually became Warner Brothers'--and film history's--gain when the Burbank studio's Cohan musical became a massive, patriotic hit in the opening months of World War II. As chronicled in this vibrantly restored, first-ever complete soundtrack for the film, it was a compelling twist of fate. James Cagney turns in one of the screen's most ostensibly unlikely--and ultimately indelible--musical performances (netting him his only Best Actor Oscar ®), teaming with studio music director Roy Heindorf to update Cohan's once-quaint turn-of the-century patriotic ditties ("You're a Grand Old Flag," "Over There," "Yankee Doodle Boy") and infectious vaudevillian chestnuts ("Give My Regards to Broadway," "Harrigan") with bracing dollops of the studio's '40s orchestral sass--and, just months after Pearl Harbor, some crucial historical parallels. Also included are four bonus tracks that remarkably survived the film's preproduction, including an outtake of "You Remind Me of My Mother" and voice-and-piano-only rehearsal versions of "Give My Regards to Broadway" and "You're a Grand Old Flag" that further underscore Cagney's deceptively effortless ability to sell a song despite his limited musical gifts. It's a long overdue showcase for a true American film musical gem. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars Yankee Doodle Dandy Review.......2006-11-03

It's an old movie with an old soundtrack, but I loved the movie, I love the music, and I'm very happy with my purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Yankee Doodle Dandy.......2006-06-30

Excellent in black and white and color. James Cagney also got a medal from a President. (President Reagan!} If you like entertainment...this is it!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing! Wonderful! Just buy it - you won't be sorry!.......2005-03-05

I am so very glad I bought this CD. I own the DVD of "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and watch it all the time, so I almost didn't buy this, wondering if I really needed yet another CD.

Well, thank God I didn't pay any attention to that dumb idea!

If you love "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and Cagney, you just have to buy this soundtrack. It's like being able to take the movie with you anywhere ... it's not just the songs - as others have said - but also includes bits of Cagney's voice-overs, even the tap-dancing from the end of "Little Johnny Jones." And since the audio system in my car is better than my TV's, it all seemed even bigger, richer and better. (George M. would love that!)

Wonderful, wonderful stuff!

5 out of 5 stars What a find!!.......2003-06-15

I haven't been able to see this movie on TV since Turner bought it (don't get TCM), but if you've seen the movie several tims, as I have, listening to this CD is very nearly as good as watching it all the way through. (I'm so delighted with it that I'm even willing to forgive TCM for putting a paper ad inside with the disc.)

Monumental effort must have gone into this soundtrack, given the age of the original recordings. The tracks here are crisp, clear, and bright, with no evidence of how long ago they were first put down. The editors were also generous in their inclusion of dialogue that ties some of the tracks together (for example, we hear the man tell Johny Jones to watch for the skyrocket, then we hear the skyrocket as it leads into "Give My Regards to Broadway"). There are a couple of places where the endings are slightly abrupt but this is because, in the movie, the music fades into extended dialogue.

The only bit of dialogue I expected to hear in a song, but didn't, is in "Over There" near the very end of the film, when Cagney/Cohan has fallen in step with the soldiers going off to WWII, as they're singing "Over There", when the soldier nearest him says something like, "What's wrong, old timer, don't know the words?" and Cagney says, "Seems to me I do" and starts singing along. That's minor and pales next to how wonderful the rest of this soundtrack is.

One of the biggest treats on this CD is that we get to hear some of Cagney's tapping, notably in "Give My Regards to Broadway", "You're a Grand Old Flag", and - one of my favorite moments in movie history - when he dances down the White House stairs to "Yankee Doodle" near the end).

The outtake is not a humorous one, simply a track they decided not to use. It and the rehearsal tracks are all just the performers voices with piano accompaniment. I especially enjoyed hearing Cagney rehearsing "You're a Grand Old Flag".

If you like Cagney, if you like Cohan's music, if you like movies "the way they used to make them", or if you're not ashamed to get a little choked up with patriotism once in a while, you will not be disappointed in this CD!

5 out of 5 stars A Soundtrack Every American Should Own.......2002-09-23

Finally! If you own that Hollywood Soundstage abomination of the "Yankee Doodle Dandy" soundtrack you can finally pitch it. Here is the real article. Rhino (Turner Classic Movies Music) lovingly restored the music from the beloved "Yankee Doodle Dandy" motion picture starring James Cagney. This soundtrack sounds astonishing considering it's 60 years old. It's very obvious some loving care was taken in it's production for which we all should be greatful. The liner notes also are great with informative text and wonderful photos from the movie. The marvelous George M. Cohan songs gives one goosebumps and bring tears to the eyes. We all need this type of patriotic pep rally, especially in these tough times. As I've said, this soundtrack belongs in every American's home just as much as that "Grand Old Flag"! I believe there are plans to release the movie on DVD, hopefully soon.

Off the Record offers an amazingly fresh and simple alternative--one that proves to be a definitive step in presenting these truly classic sides. By special arrangement with Archeophone Records, Off the Record is proud to present all 37 issued titles by the Oliver band, newly transferred from the best available original sources, issued on two compact discs. Engineer and master sound recording restoration specialist Doug Benson--known for his definitive work on "The Complete Hit of the Week" on Archeophone Records--and David Sager--jazz historian and trombonist--have searched far and wide to gain access to the cleanest copies of all the Oliver discs, including the unique copy of "Zulus Ball" and "Working Man Blues." Using a meticulous musical ear, a wide variety of styli and the subtlest application of digital technology, Benson, perhaps for the first time, has revealed the natural ambience of these discs. Unprecedented Detail and Clarity: The Oliver ensemble has never been heard to better advantage. Passages long accepted as muddy and indistinct pour forth with unprecedented clarity. Even the introduction of the ultra-rare "Zulus Ball," often lamented for its poor condition, shines through crystal clear! Straight off the discs with as little processing as possible: There is no better way to bring these old discs to life than with the right stylus, a sensitive ear, and careful application of non-invasive processing. Whereas many reissues are marred by over-processing, resulting in muffled sound and/or digital artifacts, Off the Record has judiciously applied just enough non-invasive technique in order to remove ticks, pops, harsh resonances and other unwelcome noise--leaving the music to speak for itself. Expertly Speed Corrected: Just because we call them "78s" doesn't mean that they really are. Sound recordings from the early days of sound recording rarely spin at exactly 78 rpm. Back in those days there was no standardization regarding speed; often discs ran a

5 out of 5 stars Renovating An Old Master.......2007-07-15

I'm revelling in this new 2-CD set of King Oliver's complete 1923 recordings. In the excellent accompanying 32-page booklet, Dick Spottswood is quoted as saying that the Oliver Creole Jazz Band should be reissued every ten years as technology improves. I first heard some on the old Riverside LP release and, despite all the imperfections, knew that this was the real McCoy. Having progressed via the World Record Club LP and the Milestone double LP to the Robert Parker CDs, I think that this magnificent new set will suffice (that is, if I don't wear it out).

If you're coming new to Oliver, don't be misled into thinking that these recordings are raucous examples of a primitive music form. As the perceptive liner notes state (and these octogenerian recordings underline) "Oliver's band was first and foremost a dance band, as were most jazz bands of the day".

If you're already committed, you'll find the effect of hearing these recordings anew is analogous to that of viewing an Old Master after the accumulated dirt of the centuries (which we took for granted as part of the picture) has been removed and the original colours stand revealed in all their glory.

5 out of 5 stars Mining the 78 Grooves with Custom Styli .......2007-05-30

We can HOPE this will sound better 10+ years down the road (on a future re-issue), but this 2006 set is definitely a big improvement over all previous versions. I had purchased the late John R. T. Davies' 1996 Retrieval set (previously considered "state-of-the-art") only a few months ago and had listened to it several times. This new one wins hands-down for overall clarity and resonance. This is fun, rollicking music--classic New Orleans style--which has never really been surpassed within the genre. Don't expect modern sounding discs, but do treat yourself to this 1923 treasure. Excellent, informative liner notes are included.

5 out of 5 stars THE set to get.......2007-01-19

As anyone with more than a passing interest in jazz knows, these are among the most important records in the history of the genre. King Oliver was one of the legendary New Orleans jazz trumpeters of the 1910s who made the move to Chicago with his protégé, Louis Armstrong, in the early '20s. The recordings on this disc indicate clearly why Joe Oliver was "King." His band has an irresistible ensemble sound and a certain indescribable "drive" that no band since has captured in quite the same way. I've yet to hear any of the so-called trad jazz revival bands play with collective improvisation this tight. Just listen to "Froggie Moore" on this CD and you'll hear what I mean! This was exciting stuff when it was recorded in 1923, and it's still plenty exciting now! Undoubtedly, many people will be turned off by the relatively thin sound of these 85-year-old acoustic recordings, and that's a shame. These recordings are classics that every true jazz fan should own. The music here has been reissued many times in the past several decades, but *this* is the set to get. While the audio is a far cry from CD-quality, this 2-CD set presents the best-sounding transfers I have ever heard! I already had these tracks on releases from Olympic, Milestone, Joker, and Classics, and the hype is true: the sound on this new Archeophone/Off The Record set simply blows all previous reissues away. There's just a freshness and crispness on these transfers that has never been there before. These records have *presence* now. Listening to these on a decent set of headphones or on quality loudspeakers, the piano finally sounds like a piano again--not just some muddy percussive tinkling. Oliver's and Armstrong's cornets come shining through with full force. Even thought these are all acoustic recordings, there's a certain electricity in the air when listening to them. I had never fully appreciated King Oliver's band before, but now that I can better hear what's going on, I finally "get it." All of my collector friends who have purchased this set and compared it with previous reissues (those I mentioned plus the famous Retrieval set) agree--the sound on this issue is far superior. The beautifully-illustrated booklet (with scans of *all* the included records) contains lengthy detailed notes and discographical information and is worth the price alone. I simply can't say enough good things about this set. Get it!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Transfer: Best So Far!.......2006-12-23

I have several of King Oliver's jazz recordings, both LP, and CD, and this one is by far the best to date. I agree with the previous viewer: as far as the sound is concerned, our technology is limited, and this may be about as far as they can go with these recordings. But, hey, they still sound terrific. I have never listened to the original recordings [an original album] of King Oliver, however, this recording is outstanding and it sure puts the other recordings I have of King Oliver to shame. With the technology going about as far as it is going to go [at least for now] a remarkable job has been done in at least restoring the sound to some degree on this particular CD.

Irregardless, I like hearing King Oliver's sound. It's just great to listen to. I would also highly recommend this particular King Oliver CD, to other reviewers who are not sure just which copy to purchase. I remember hearing a lot of great talk about the Milestone issue [which I have] and this one definetly puts it to shame. I really did not realize how different the sound quality was on the Milestone issue, but after listening to this CD, WOW, what a difference! This is the one to purchase [for now anyway].

Some of the sounds on this particular recording are to name just a few: JUST GONE, CANAL STREET BLUES, MANDY LEE BLUES, CHIMES BLUES, WEATHER BIRD RAG, DIPPER MOUTH BLUES, FROGGIE MOORE, SNAKE RAG [a great one] SWEET LOVIN' MAN, HIGH SOCIETY RAG, SOBBIN' BLUES, WHERE DID YOU STAY LAST NIGHT, DIPPER MOUTH BLUES, JAZZIN' BABIES BLUES, ALLIGATOR HOP, and a lot of other great, great sounds. There are 37 tracks in all, and once again, I believe that these are the BEST King Oliver sounds that I have ever heard on CD. I highly recommend this particular CD to those who like the jazz sounds of the 1920s. My favorite era of jazz runs from about 1923, to the early 1930s. Not that the later periods are not good, I just like the sound of jazz during this particular era.

5 out of 5 stars About As Good As It Is Ever Going To Get.......2006-11-30

There is only so much music that can be recovered from these disks. They are what they are - acoustical recordings made in 1923 by budget label companies. Even if these recordings were made at one of the better studios, say Victor or Columbia, they would still wouldn't have captured the full sound of the Oliver band due to the limits of the acoustical recording process. The only way technology is going to capture this band in all its glory is when someone invents a time machine and goes back to 1923 with the proper recording equipment.

On to the CD at hand: I've heard the other sets (Milestone, Retrieval) and this one is much better since you can hear the individual players more distinctly than the other sets. I'm sure future sound restoration techniques can extract even more information from these disks but I think we are approaching (or have approached) a limit as to what can be pulled from these records.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Appropriate Album Title for a Terrific Album.......2007-04-16

When it comes to Tiffany (and several other 1980's singers) the problem is that fans, critics and people who aren't fans won't let the singer "grow up" so to speak. They label each new album the artist puts out after 1990 as a "comeback", but really, how many times can someone make a comeback? Well, Tiffany has done it at least three times, and "Dust off and Dance" is another great album by the former teen-queen, far superior to any of the present so-called teen-queens. It should be noted, that Tiffany's album prior to this one, "The Color of Silence" is another superpb album, but with an entire different feel to it.

"Dust off and Dance", is quite likely to be a reference to Tiffany herself dusting off the past (be it harsh reviewes, haters, or the mood of "The Color of Silence"), and quite literally just dancing. At least "Dust off and Dance" doesn't try to be anything more than a dance / disco / Hi NRG album - and a fantastic one at that. Production blends the best of modern day sounds with a bit of the 80's, combined with Tiffany's powerful voice and some great lyrics, most of which are written by her, resulting in an album that is easy to listen to over and over again.

The songs may not seem as deep on the surface as those from her previous album, but they all tell a story and do have important meanings to them, like enjoying life as it is so short. Some of the songs and lyrics are a bit suggestive, but the album was written, according to Tiffany, with her gay fans in mind. It's also appropriate for the dance floor (obviously). While the overall mood of the album is upbeat, there are a couple of ballads, but even they are upbeat. It's great to see that the album has been getting some play on the hit TV series "Ugly Betty". The biggest problem with the album though is that it is too short - only eleven songs, two of which are remixes. But hey, quality over quantity anyday.

Highlights: Be With U Tonite, Ride It, Na Na Na

Low Points: Kama Sutra, I Think We're Alone Now (remix)

cd was for my daughter and she thought it was excellent.

3 out of 5 stars A good attempt to comeback.......2007-01-11

Not one of Tiffany's best work. This disco-ish CD is ok, not the Tiffany that we're all familiar with. It's nice to see she's still recording, but it doesn't measure up to her earlier work. Her last CD "Color of Silence" was excellent, the songs were great. Had more feeling in it. If you're a Tiffany fan like me, then add this to your collection.

2 out of 5 stars 2 and half - Not Quite What I've been Expected..........2007-01-10

Well, I have to say I only start to know and love Tiffany from her come back 6 years ago, with some amazing songs like "Open My Eyes" and the exceptionally heart melting "If Only". I have absolute no idea what sort of her music in the 90s or 80s and have no intention of exploring it since the pop music from those period is a bit odd for me. Since this album was rather new and the review said it relflects her best in the past, I decided to buy it. There are some songs that quite upbeat, with lots of catchy tunes but I still prefer her previous work. This album is a bit blend, lack of emotion and there are some songs just sound alike. It's unavoidable since Trance and House just got a limited sound effect to play around with in the arragement, I think you know what I mean. Anyway, if you looking for a feel good family or even birthday party, you can go with this one. But if you fond of flowing with emotion and smooth melodies, then the last album would be the best choice.

4 out of 5 stars High Energy Club Music.......2006-08-14

Well U have to be a fan of pop or club music to really enjoy this latest CD of Tiffany's .Her latetest effort is a complete 180 from her last cd THE COLOR OF SILENCE but I luv both due to the fact u get to listen to her great vocals but with that said Dust Off And Dance is the correct title for this So Get This if U WANNA DANCE! It's been three years since Laundry Service transformed Shakira into an international rock diva, and we're still waiting for the official follow-up. As she toils away on her next studio album (due later this year), the Colombian temptress has kept fans distracted with a Washed and Dried special edition of her English-language breakthrough and a Grandes Exitos collection of her Spanish hits. Now comes Live & Off the Record, a lush CD/DVD package chronicling Shakira's 2003 Tour of the Mongoose. It's a must-have for Shakira fans and features her second live CD effort (following 2000's stellar MTV Unplugged). The real treat, though, is the DVD, which was filmed at a tour stop in the Netherlands. Shakira tears through tracks such as "Si Te Vas," "Inevitable," "Rules," and "Ready For the Good Times" with equal parts sensuality and animalistic ferocity. Her stage presence is positively electric. The accompanying documentary is also a revelation, capturing Shakira at her most honest and vulnerable. Highlights include the singer's bout with tendonitis (brought on by belly-dancing), an early-morning mariachi serenade from her boyfriend on Valentine's Day, and a backstage visit from novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Fans' appetites should be whetted--for a little while. --Joey Guerra

Brilliant!!. I saw the original off broadway "March.."and revival of
"In Trousers" in the 80's. i liked them alot. but revisiting them now i'm really impressed with "In Trousers" . The lyrics are inventive and fun and the music is great! I'D SEE a show like this over "les miz saigon of the opera" any day.

5 out of 5 stars THIS ALBUM IS MUSICALLY/ LYRICALLY unique!.......2002-09-23

there is no music like Wiliam finns music....
these actors are wonderful as well..all of them...
They performed this recording like a show, even more so..
The songs are pretty much all brilliant, unique, and captivating. These are well made songs,....
Finn was well deserving of the Hutinson Fellowship he received for musical composition.
He will go alongside Sondheim as one of the all time greats...

5 out of 5 stars So much fun, and so moving.......2002-04-30

How could you go wrong with 3 Tony Award Nominees????? Mary Testa, Chip Zien, and Alison Fraser! It's amazing! Plus the one cast member I was not familiar with, Joanna Green, is also superb. Just so you know.. the songs on the cd are not in the same order they are in my script. The closing number on the cd (not counting the bonus track) is actually the opening number. "Marvin's Giddy Little Siezures" which opens the cd is in the middle of the show. This is why it seems so helter-skelter. I don't why it was done like this... but it was. The show's performances sell it though. The performances are enfused with pathos, but they all have great comedic timing as well. William Finn's music is incredibly catchy, but also complex. Although poorly recorded, it's wonderfully performed, and a must have.

4 out of 5 stars Part One of the 'Marvin' Trilogy Is Worth a Listen.......2001-01-22

William Finn's best known work, "March of the Falsettos" and its companion piece (and sequel) "Falsettoland" found commercial success on Broadway in the early 1990's including a Tony Award for Finn's superlative score. In the Broadway outing, the raucous "March..." made up the first act while the more sobering "Falsettoland" comprised act two. As a pair of one act musicals, these two pieces tell a very complete and emotionally engaging story about a previously "straight" married man (Marvin) who leaves his wife and son for a male lover. His wife, Trina, rebounds by marrying Marvin's psychiastrist, and the entire dysfunctional family deals with love, hate, life and death. But that's not "In Trousers." "In Trousers" pre-dates these two musicals by at least another decade and tells in a much more disjointed fashion the story of Marvin's early years. Marvin appears here in various stages of his pre-Falsettos life, as spoiled fourteen year old, horny young student lusting after the exotic Miss Goldburg, and romantic young swain smitten with a touchingly innocent and vulnerable Trina. Here we get the nuts and bolts of Marvin and Trina's past: the rise and fall of their mistake of a marriage, and Marvin's first meeting with Whizzer Brown (who is only sung about here, and will not appear as a character until "March of the Falsettos"). As a piece of theater, "In Trousers" succeeds musically more than dramatically. The story telling here is more patchwork than anything else, and may be hard for audiences to grasp who are not familiar with the future storyline. There are some extraordinary tunes, though. "Pass the Sugar, Please" details the collapse of a ten year marriage over breakfast while "Love Me For What I Am" is full of hope and longing by people who believe there is life left in a failing relationship. The four member cast is wonderful, headed here by Chip Zien and Alison Frasier. Zien would later go on to play the role of Mendel the psychiatrist in the Falsetto musicals while Michael Rupert took over the role of Marvin. Still, Zien is every bit as powerful and moving as Marvin proving his true versatility as an actor (and if you want to SEE him prove his chops, pick up a VHS or DVD of "Into the Woods" where his performance as The Baker is a real masterpiece). "In Trousers" belongs in your library if you love William Finn's work, especially the moving Falsetto musicals.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT musical that presages Finn's later career!.......2000-11-01

Ok, maybe I'm in the minority, but I really think that 'In Trousers' is, musically and lyrically, every bit the equal, and in some cases, superior to the other two entries in The Marvin Trilogy! Internal consistency has never been Finn's strong suit, and it IS difficult to figure out exactly what is going on in this song cycle, but each of these songs is really a gem all by itself. All four of the performers are excellent, and Zien and Fraser are incomparable. Frasers' 'Love Me For What I Am' is truly heartbreaking. After wearing out TWO copies of the LP, I am thrilled to finally have the CD available.

The Walkmen's third album steers their ever challenging sonic textures into greener, more expansive landscapes and finds the fresh air there downright invigorating. A focused, more guitar-centric approach is notable throughout, with textures that span the jangly invitation of the Mexicali horn-spiced opener "Louisiana" to the droning, hypnotic buzz of "Good For You's Good For Me" and churning rhythms of "Boston"; reminders that the band's frequent nods to Joy Division are considerably more than mere affectation. Set against those textures, the nervous "Tenley Town" comes off as a surprisingly straightforward shot of the band's thrashy, garage-rooted past. Frontman Hamilton Leithauser frequently invokes a vocal persona that suggests Dylan on too much coffee and not enough sleep throughout. Yet he's limber enough to coax it into the supple, Caribbean-flavored lounge croon of "Brandy Alexander" and the brooding edge of "This Job Is Killing Me" before bringing the album full circle on a surprisingly tender cover of Quentin Stoltzfus's "Another One Goes By" that somehow evokes Nashville Skyline by way of Manchester '78. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

The Walkmen have been solidifying their position as one of the most important bands in the alternative music community with their previous releases, "Everyone Who Pretended To Like Me Is Gone" and "Bows And Arrows". Extensive touring, media prominence, critical acclaim, national modern rock radio airplay, and TV performances have helped establish the band in the music community. "A Hundred Miles Off" is their most solid effort yet. "Dylan meets Joy Division" - Uncut. "The dramatic epic sweep, the urgent, chiming guitars, the upright snap of the drums - it's all here" - Bust.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Yes, this is a departure.......2007-02-04

This album is very different from the band's first two. Pianos and organs still linger here and there, but they are not as prominently featured in these songs which are basically guitar-driven rock songs. Hamilton Leithauser's once incredible voice has morphed into a shirll screech lacking enunciation for many of the tracks. It's a pleasant break when he explores his lower range on "Brandy Alexander". I've heard Dylan comparisons, but maybe it's closer to Faces-era Rod Stewart. "Lousiana" "All Hands on the Cooks" "Brandy Alexander" and especially "Another One Goes By" are excellent. A couple more tracks like these and this album could have been great. Overall, it's not as good as "Bows + Arrows" or "Everyone Who Pretended to Like Me is Gone" but not as bad as some critics have claimed. I'd give it a B (I'm a teacher).

1 out of 5 stars Aptly named at least.......2006-12-22

I have to listen to this trash at work every single day and I am about ready to hand in my two weeks. You only need to listen to "Always After You" to get a sense of exactly what's wrong with this entire album. Hamilton Leithauser sounds like a palsied halfwit wailing and banging on a toy drum. I mean the man is too lazy to open his mouth to sing. That's actually hit it pretty well on the head - it's lazy. Lazy lazy lazy from start to finish. One long droning "Duuuuuuuuuuuuh." Thank you, Walkmen, for actually making my day harder to get through.

3 out of 5 stars A step back..........2006-08-31

I'd been eagerly anticipating a follow up to Bows and Arrows for some time, but after a couple of weeks, this one's not really doing it for me.

The first two albums (which have been in my car's CD changer for one and a half years straight) have these great subtle elements that the new album is missing. Aside from songwriting elements, a think a few of the songs are ruined by this new screaming thing Hamilton's doing. The drumming on the earlier albums reminded me a bit of the stuff from the Bad Plus, but all that seems to have mellowed out on the new album.

On the other hand, it's still better than most other stuff out there.

5 out of 5 stars Hundred Miles On.......2006-08-23

The Walkmen just get better and better, and always seem to have a surprise up their sleeve. I certainly didn't expect an album like this, it's equally different but equally good to Bows and Arrows and Everyone Who Pretended to Like Me is Gone.

I can't even explain why I like this band so much, I've been listening to them for years and yet I can hardly name any of their songs. I simply listen to the entire albums over and over again like one giant song. That's a rare band!

Lou-WEEZ-e-ana opens a Hundred Miles Off and the strumming game is afoot. You just can't get more esoteric than that. Just when the incredibly spot-on drumming wins you over, suddenly it sounds as if Minor Threat is reborn with Tenley Town. Other songs sprinkled amidst the album remind one of a Tarantino soundtrack, or a '70s department store replete with popcorn smells in the air...you decide.

Perhaps this album is less accessible by the mainstream, especially compared to Bows and Arrows. We'll see. No matter, it's a keeper.

1 out of 5 stars My time was wasted listening to this so that you don't have to.......2006-07-29

Listening to this makes you wonder: what causes a group of people to think they have songs in them? Because this album offers zero evidence of any discernible talent. Lured, by a halfway decent opening track I was bored by everything else that followed. The vocals were awful, the lead flailing himself and saying nothing interesting at all (was he DRUNK when he laid down his [cough, cough] "contribution"?). This is nothing but a group who - like thousands of others who think they've "got what it takes" - have wasted their time, your time, and a record company's bet that this album / group had potential to succeed. I'm here to tell you: it's snake-eyes. A total bust. Walkmen, take my advice and call it quits. Dylan should sue for damages to reputation in the extremely unlikely scenario of this album moving more than 100 copies.

Amazon.com essential recording

A 45-minute trip to bluegrass heaven, these 17 songs combine the talents of two unparalleled musical forces: Bill Monroe, the inventor of bluegrass, master of the mandolin, and owner of a bone-chilling, mountain tenor voice; and Doc Watson, the flatpicking genius with a soulful, mellow vocal tone. Much of the material stems from the legendary Monroe Brothers recordings. Their sublime harmonies carry plaintive ballads including "What Would You Give in Exchange for Your Soul" and "Banks of the Ohio," and uptempo numbers such as "You Won't Be Satisfied That Way." The roaring fiddle tunes are simply mind-blowing: "Soldier's Joy," "East Tennessee Blues," and "Fire on the Mountain" all rank as virtuosic masterpieces. If it's possible, the pairing exceeds all expectations. --Marc Greilsamer

Album Description

The essential genius of Bill Monroe and Doc Watson resides in their ability to infuse traditional American music with their distinctive musical personalities. Their unparalleled vocal and instrumental skills complement one another on these rare, previously unreleased duets. "...chronicles the early meetings of two instrumental geniuses. -- Billboard

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars You've already lived too long without this album.......2002-07-03

Buy this one. This is one of my 5 favorite albums of all time. The harmonies just kill me, and the instrumentals are enough to drive me mad.

No mandolinist would ever say that he's better than Monroe, and no flatpick guitarist would ever say that he's better than Doc. These are the two originals...the two masters...and it's just the two of them through the whole thing.

Do a favor to yourself and the country...buy this album, and let everyone you know have a listen.

5 out of 5 stars Doc and Bill pickin' a few licks!.......2001-12-12

Great album. Traditional fiddle tunes/hoedowns and early bluegrass tunes (most of them written by Monroe) played in an intimate relaxed setting. Some of Monroe's best Mandolin picking. Doc is exceptional as always.

Great album for musicians. With only two instruments playing, you can really hear what they're doing. Singing combination is very interesting as well: Bill's famous high tenor and Doc's deep, melodious voice.

This is a great album by two masters of traditional music.

5 out of 5 stars Like a hoe-down on Heaven's back porch ..........2001-11-30

Monroe and Watson are, of course, masters of their considerably crowded domain, and this recording shows why. Just a couple of amazing musicians having some fun together -- relaxed and loose but with plenty of sparks a-flyin'. The fingers are picking fast and furious. The vocals are superb, and some of the instrumental runs are simply breathtaking. Recording quality is more than acceptable.

The whole thing plays like a jam session at the country barbecue of your dreams. But it today and watch it get stuck in your CD player for days on end.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Great.......2000-11-01

This is a tremendous album by two of the legends of bluegrass music. If you like bluegrass (or just great music for that matter), you'll be blown away by these live, relatively loose jam sessions where their virtuosity and vocal skill is incredibly apparent. A must...

5 out of 5 stars First rate from 2 masters!.......2000-06-13

This CD makes you wish that Doc & Big Mon had done so much more together. Several of the cuts are songs that the Monroe Brothers did and are just fabulous. If you like Doc and Monroe individually, you'll love them together.

5 out of 5 stars One of the top, yet most underrated albums of all time.......2005-07-19

For a change, the sound of this remastered masterpiece is excellent. The bass range is simply outstanding.

If you like safe, mainstream or commercial hard rock, this will probably not work for you. But if you like genuine music, guts, playmanship and a band with an attitude, then The Mighty Sweet will satisfy you like none other.

This album shows one of the most influential rock bands at its productive and musical peak. Although this album is often overlooked, even by Sweet fans, it shows impressive musical creativity and power. Off the Record has it all: pure rock, riffs, melody, musical dexterity, moodiness, funk, excellent arrangements and even blatant plagiarism ("Windy City" vs. Deep Purple's Woman from Tokyo). Anyway, you are unlikely to find better vocals from any other group from the '70s (even mainstream Queen, which in fact lured former Sweet engineer Mack to their rank). Just listen to songs like "Lost Angels", "Live for Today" and "She Gimme Lovin'" and you'll be convinced nobody has ever played hard rock music like that, even if many wannabes have tried to copy their style. This album also has very rare gems like "Laura Lee" and "Midnight to Daylight", even a very upbeat song in "Fever of Love". Even "Funk it Up" rocks!

The Sweet were highly accomplished musicians and this is proof of a band that really produced some of the best rock music of all time.

THIS ALBUM IS A MUST and my favorite of my 2,000 plus CD collection!

5 out of 5 stars Hard Rockin' and polished........2005-04-16

The SWEET have made it! After two hit albums in North America, the bank account is doing just fine. They write their own songs now, handle the production and control the final product. But, with more money comes something that can wound a band that plays songs which are on the edge and "fresh". TOO MUCH STUDIO TIME! In the past, SWEET had very little time to put albums together, so songs were delivered "raw" with minimal post production polishing, giving them that intangible quality once known in the sixties as "a happening" (Ask your mom if you don't know what I'm talking about). Although this album is a hard rockin' roller coaster ride, SWEET have lost something here. BUT WAIT!!! ALL IS NOT LOST! In the bonus material, the final four songs offer us "jaw dropping" performances by the band. Someone, somewhere, stood up and said: "OK boys, one more time, WITH FEELING!!! Thus creating "a happening" and making this CD worth every penny. Play it loud, feel it...

Very favourite tracks: "Live For Today" and "Lost Angels" demo version.

5 out of 5 stars SWEET AT THEIR PEAK AND THE END OF AN ERA!!!.......2005-02-11

With Sweet now touring constantly abroad (they hadn`t played in Britain for 3 years by this point) ardent fans were eagerly awaiting this album which turned out to be the last HEAVY offering from the band. They were not to be disappointed! No expense was spared, beginning most notably with the elaborate gatefold sleeve which adorned the original vinyl release. The album was written and conceived almost entirely in the studio, which bassist Steve Priest likened to having a taxi meter running. (CHECK OUT HIS BOOK "ARE YOU READY STEVE?") Apparently most of the band were fueled up on coke during the proceedings. As with the preceeding album "Give Us A Wink" Sweet were handling the production. The idea was to come up with a commercial rock `n` roll album but having said that, the two singles lifted from it that open the record both failed to chart."Fever Of Love", the first track has a real warmth to it, especially Connolly`s vocals, and a beautiful, soaring guitar break towards the end."Lost Angels", the next track has an "everything but the kitchen sink" production ... harmony guitar fills, Bad Company style riffing, Queen like shriek multi layered vocals."Midnight To Daylight" is pure, Sweet indulgence, in three and a half minutes. Begins like quite a commericial pop rock number before escalating into a guitar versus harmonica duel with a "trick the D.J." ending. The album`s killer cut is without a doubt "Windy City", a lengthy lament punctuated by a riff not too disimilar to Deep Purple`s "Woman From Tokyo", a Led Zeppelin "No Quarter" type break which leads into a frenzied bass, drums, guitar work out. This remained a stage favourite for years and usually came as the encore to the band`s show."Live For Today", which was the album`s working title up until the conception of the actual album cover reflects to a certain extent the influence punk was beginning to have even on the "old farts", and probably the influence drink was beginning to have on Connolly`s state of mind. Definitely an "I want out" song!"She Gimme Lovin`" is delivered at breakneck speed with swirling drums and a touch of the Robert Plant`s while "Hard Times" has a loose, jam type feel to it.It is preceeded by a beautiful acoustic track called "Laura Lee" and my only regret about this remastered CD is that the opportunity wasn`t taken to reunite the song with "Show Me The Way",a hard edged electric/acoustic, slashing piece of action initially scheduled to follow on without a break. (It ended up on it`s own as the B side to "California Nights".)"Off The Record" officially ended with what one reviewer described as a pointless "Fame" reworking, "Funk It Up". Sure it`s funky, but it`s a worthwhile track reflecting the "funky" leanings of many of the so called "heavier" bands circa 1977. The bonus cuts are two B sides, "A Distinct Lack Of Ancient" and "Why Don`t You Do It To Me", the most noteworthy being the former, an unusually haunting instrumental. Essentially, I would define this recording as Sweet at their peak and the end of an era. Subsequent albums saw a definite change, once again, in direction, coupled with first a lessening of Brian Connolly`s input and finally his departure. Highly recommended listening particularly if you enjoy bands like Deep Purple, Queen, Led Zeppelin ... more so than glam rock as you would expect.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent edition, with one minor flaw.......2005-02-07

This disc features the UK edition of "Off The Record",which lacks "Stairway to The Stars",but not to worry, since it's included amongst the bonus tracks. As for the other bonus tracks, you get the non-L.P. b-sides "A Distinct Lack of Ancient" & "Why Don't You Do It to Me",the alternate "Midnight to Daylight"(which debuted on the German 2-CD set "Sweet Originals"),a Disco mix of "Funk it Up"(A Capitol U.S.A. creation made via tape copy repeats of certain sections.Yawn!),a fine previously unreleased demo of "Lost Angels",and alternate mixes of "She Gimme Lovin'" and "Hard Times" which have been heard on numerous previous outtakes CD's.My only complaint:the tape copy used for "Stairway to the Stars" has audible damage during the first second.Obviously,it passes quickly, but it wasn't present on any previous release of the song.Oh well,it's a mid-price CD....

"Howdy, howdy folks. We're glad to be back for another show here. As we do the numbers now, we're gonna call each fellow's name out so we can get right along with the show." And what a show. Bluegrass has always been a live-performance genre, on stage or in the studio, and Bill Monroe never sounded better on stage than during these heady years of the folk revival. He had something to share and to prove to his new audience, and he wouldn't meet them halfway, choosing instead his grittiest traditional material and singing, especially in the late '50s, with full, high yodel and wail. His voice mellowed into the '60s, but his band, including many of the best bluegrass pickers ever (Bill Keith, Peter Rowan, Richard Greene, and Bobby Hicks for starters), never gave quarter. To understand Bill Monroe and his various ensembles, one needs to hear his stage brilliance, and there's no better place to start than with these warm, clear live recordings. --Roy Kasten

Album Description

Previously unreleased recordings from the 1950s and '60s present Monroe concert performances, jam sessions, and festival workshops of Bill with the Bluegrass Boys and his brothers Charlie and Birch. This 75-minute collection captures Monroe with Peter Rowan, Bill Keith, Tex Logan, Bobby Hicks, Del McCoury, Hazel Dickens, Roland White, and many, many others. Includes rare photos and extensive notes by Ralph Rinzler. "...culled from both concerts and picking parties, [this recording] reveals what a holy terror [Monroe] was in front of an audience--even of friends, at 4:45 a.m." -- Newsweek

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-03-10

No one artist will ever be missed more by me than Bill Monroe. As a teenager back in the early 80's, before the corporate mentality took over bluegrass, Bill was out there burning things up. Nothing in this world will ever mean as much to me as watching Bill perform "My Last Days On Earth" live at Bean Blossom in 1983. His name is synonymous with people like Louis Armstrong, Robert Johnson, Elvis and Roy Acuff due to his guiding influence.

What is found on this disc are two phases of Bill's career. The first is the mid to late 50's when rock n roll was gaining popularity and country artists were plugging in to keep pace. Bill, ever the purist to what he'd created and being his typical hard headed self, refused to put any band on the road that carried an electirc instrument. It was during this era that gigs were hard to come by for "hillbilly" music. That doesn't in any way take awy from these perfomances however. Bill and crew were at the top of thier respective game and the delivery is completely flawless. Ed Mayfield is the guitarist and lead singer on several of these cuts. The toure de force he turns in on Blue Yodel # 5 alone is jaw dropping. Also included is a guest spot with Don Reno playing banjo on Bluegrass Stomp, with Bill providing some of the spookiest, blusiest playing ever to be heard.
The second phase is equally impressive featuring the likes of Richard Greene, Pete Rowan, Bill Kieth (introduced as Brad because Monroe was to be the only Bill on stage) and Tex Logan. It was at this time that Ralph Rinzler had begun managing Monroe's career and a resulting rennisance was underway, which in no small way helped Bill attract younger, more progressive pickers. The most amazing cut from this period would have to be "Wayfaring Stranger" with a completely impromtu instrumental call-and-answer on Bill's break.

This disc, along with the Doc Watson duet (also on Smithsonian Folkway) and the Bear Family box sets of Monroe's Decca recordings are about all a bluegrass fan will ever need for a complete catalog of The Father of Bluegrass' genius.

5 out of 5 stars An intimate glimpse at Monroe's onstage charm.......2002-12-19

A treasure trove of rare Monroe performances, from various folk fests and concerts. For the most part these live renditions don't capture the full intensity of Monroe's music, but there's certainly not a bad cut on this album. The best bit, though, is a track called "Monroe Family Segment," which consists of Q&A dialogs with fans and festival moderators asking Monroe to explain his techniques and how he learned them from various family members... Interesting in and of itself, but also a great glimpse at Bill's rapport with his fans.

5 out of 5 stars That was I call MUSIC........2002-08-03

I have gotten myself into bluegrass lately even though I'm not new to it either. I grew up hearing bluegrass music on television like the Beverly Hillbillies, Hee Haw and the Dukes of Hazzard. However, I always wanted to learn more about Bill Monroe and his music. The music on this CD is of course authentic, traditional bluegrass. I highly recommend this to any bluegrass and even non-bluegrass listener. I would like to see America get back to its music roots. We are losing it with the non substance music we hear today.

5 out of 5 stars Definitive -- Essential.......2001-05-23

This one is a must -- live recordings that show Monroe and the various Blue Grass Boys at their best. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars The very finest example of bluegrass ever!.......2001-05-04

I knew I liked the bluegrass sound, but I didn't own any... so on a whim I found this CD in a store. I bought it because I thought I recognized the name, and it did have more songs than most. That was four years ago and I still think of it as one of the best purchases I've ever made. If you like the mandolin and high old time sound... then you must have this CD!! It's over an hour of the best bluegrass ever recorded, and the information in the cover/recorded interview with Bill (#27. Monroe Family Segment) really let you get a chance to know the man.

A very poor recording of the Yankee Doodle Dandy soundtrack. Sounds as if the person making the recording put a single microphone up against speakers while he or she was playing the video at home.
