Director David Lynch's affection for kitschy lounge music and emotionally overwrought mid-century pop has long since proven to be more than trend or irony; indeed, it's often the uneasy spiritual axis of his films. The soundtrack of Mulholland Dr. turns on the usual Lynchian motifs (the brooding atmosphere of Angelo Badalamenti's ominous synth-and-orchestra cues tossed with a dash of Lynch's own off-center compositions), yet manages to evoke a sense of foreboding that's distinctly its own. Badalamenti leads off with a curve, the nervous orchestra swing-romp "Jitterbug," before descending into a dark soundscape that becomes murkier and more avant-goth at every turn. Bubbling through that morass are pop nuggets variously cheesy (Dave Cavanaugh's lounge-ready "The Beast"), lugubriously bluesy (Sonny Boy Williamson's take on Willie Dixon's "Bring It On Home"), and alternately innocent ("I've Told Every Little Star") and liturgical ("Llorando"). Three tracks of the director's own (cowritten with John Neff) skulking Lounge Music from Hell ratchet up the tension even further; it's the perfect garnish for this darkly delicious film-music cocktail. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars In this dream, you are Betty Elms.......2007-01-13

The reviews here simply don't do justice to the soundtrack. It's very hypnotizing and elevates you to this reality that you indeed have the same mental energy displayed by the first character of Betty Elms, who Diane Selwyn identifies with as herself in a dream she is having. The dark scenery conveyed by this music puts you in her place, where through darkness you hold to your innocence. The movie and music interplay in this way to the effect of putting you in that darkness where you are the same girl that Diane is seeing in her dream, the girl she knows herself to be without the hellish reality she is in as a sort of resolve to the hell she's in. This Naomi Watts specifically conveyed what I thought is a part of me that may also be a part of you, and you will notice it in the way you look at things and how your face expresses your innocence to a dark world. Then there is the music for Rita. I also reviewed the movie, which I also recommend. My favorite track is the 9th one in this respect. Secondly, which you may find suitable for your funeral, is the last song. The rest I almost prefer watching the movie and appreciating it all while viewing, but it's music you must have after you've seen it.

4 out of 5 stars Badalamenti does it again........2006-11-17

If you're a fan of Angelo Badalamenti's scores for David Lynch, you'll want to add this to your collection as well. Haunting synth pieces lull you into the dreamlike world Lynch created with this film, and there are some other types of music to jazz it up a little. Particularly striking is Rebekah Del Rio's cover of Roy Orbison's "Crying."

5 out of 5 stars Take a drive through David Lynch's musical hell and deluding darkness..........2006-06-26

To start of, I regard "Mulholland Dr." as David Lynch magnum opus, his most masterfully created cinema of deceit, lust and darkness. Compelling, totally deranged, original, sometimes hilarious funny, and three minutes later scary as hell.

David Lynch's movies are always heavy set on atmosphere, and this is partly caused by the director's long time musical collaborator Angelo Badalamenti. From the jazzy, loungy tunes for the t.v. series "Twin Peaks" to the dark overtones of "Blue Velvet", Badalamenti knows wich buttons to push to make an eerie composition, a few notes of estrangeness and give the audience an unsetteling feeling.

"Mulholland Dr." is filled with music. Most of it is purely on the soundrack with Badalamenti's score coming very close to high quality dark ambient acts like Lustmord, Raison d'Etre or Hazard, others are sung "live" in the movie, like Linda Scott's sweet bubblegumish "I've told every little star", two very hip tunes ("The beast" by Milt Buckner and Sonny Boy Williamson's "Bring it on home") and of course Rebekah Del Rio's acapella performance of "llorando", the Spanish version of Roy Orbison's evergreen.

But the greatest surprise to me were three tracks by David Lynch himself in collaboration with one John Neff. And these three pieces are to be find on a solo cd by David Lynch called "Blue Bob".
I never knew before seeing "Mulholland Dr." that David Lynch is also a guiter player and singer. Now I know and I must say that his song "Mountains falling" is the most brooding, creeping, swirling and erotic sounding piece of electric guitar music I have ever heard.

So play this album and hit the road, Jack. And pray that indeed you will come back...

4 out of 5 stars dark and (often) beautiful.......2005-11-25

anyone who has seen mulholland drive knows that the soundtrack lent a very important hand to the overall vibe of the movie. so you would think that it would be hard to enjoy one without the other, but this soundtrack suceeds very well on its own. alot of film scores are fine and enhance the movie while yr watching it, but are trash when taken alone and this sndtrk is kind of above that. i'm not really big on any of the lynch/neff tracks, but they work fine in the movie. the other songs that weren't written by badalamenti are pretty good and are a nice change of pace. my favorite tracks are dwarfland/love theme (especially the latter half), mulholland drive/love theme, llorando, and diane and camilla. i dont believe that diane and camilla was in the movie, but its a very beautiful piece that i think sums up the diane/camilla relationship quite well. anyway, i really like this cd and anyone who enjoyed the film would do well to pick this up

5 out of 5 stars A dark journey through the sphere of horror........2005-10-26

It may not be a horror movie, but the score for Mulholland Drive could be a journey through the ultimate graveyard or haunted house on a stormy Halloween night. I have never even seen the movie, though I love David Lynch's movies for the most part. This score is a dark and haunting musical journey that might work well for a score to a creepy vampire movie or something. Some of it, including the heavy jazzy and dark rock pieces, might be better suited for a suspense thriller, which it is. But the more ambient dark themes could work in any supernatural thriller much as Mark Snow's music could. Enjoy the tour! Ha! Ha! Ha!

Album Description

More marches, waltzes, and fox trots in this recording of the New Verbeeck Band Organ at Seabreeze Park in Upstate New York. On a hill above scenic Lake Ontario, the music of the band organ can be heard on the breezes drifting over the blue water. Twenty-three tunes bring back the sounds of summer from Seabreeze Park - the whirling carousel and prancing horses spin around to the music of childhood, and this fabulous recording captures the wonderful memories. Grab the popcorn, and come for a ride! This completely digital recording is crystal clear and an oversized insert includes pictures and fond memories of Merrick Price - to whom the album is dedicated. The last song was recorded on the carousel while it was moving - an innovative idea that captures the sensation of really being on the ride is enhanced by wearing headphones. This piece of Americana in music - a must for the audio collector, carousel enthusiast, or fan of mechanical music, is a one-of-a-kind gift item.

3 out of 5 stars carousel.......2007-01-03

Carousel Memories does not have the luster that I had expected. The music is not as clear as I would have liked, however, it does have some good qualities that make it worth while to listen.

5 out of 5 stars The Ideal Merry-Go-Round.......2005-07-18

This is a recording by and for merry-go-round lovers. It assembles 23 tracks of mostly characteristic carousel music, played upon a newly constructed band organ handmade by Belgian Johnny Verbeeck to replicate the old Wurlitzer 165 destroyed by a fire around 1995. The fire also claimed most of the carousel itself, which was rebuilt using some restored parts from the original (PTC#36). The recording site is Seabreeze Park on Lake Ontario in upper New York.

In another review I mentioned that that CD offered a partial and rather idealized carousel experience, for it could only provide the sound, and that sound was much more refined and free of ambient noise than would be encountered during an actual carousel ride. That comment applies as well to this recording, and perhaps more so, for the band organ in a typical operating carousel never sounded so good as the one here. This instrument has a remarkably lovely, sweet tone and, being brand new, is in perfect condition. The rolls used were obtained from no less a source than the Library of Congress, and represent a very choice selection.

The music itself includes mostly waltzes, marches, polkas, and one-time popular songs, such as Beer Barrel Polka, Sweet Rosie O'Grady, Liberty Bell, and Scatter-Brain. Less to be expected, but supremely apt, is the fine waltz from Richard Rodger's overture to the musical show Carousel. This last was experimentally recorded on the moving carousel, and thus provides an especially realistic auditory image.

For merry-go-round and band organ enthusiasts this recording might well occupy a place of honor in their CD collection. For those who desire a more realistic, though less ideal, recording I would recommend the old 1973 Takoma Records release "Last Chance on the Merry-Go-Round" (# A 1038), which I believe is no longer in the catalog. (Takoma Records was acquired in 1995 by Fantasy Records.) My personal copy of A 1038 is an LP, and I suspect no CD version was ever released. That recording was made at the carousel on the pier at Santa Monica, California, shortly before the pier was to be demolished. (Thus the title of the recording.) Since it was made while the carousel was actually in operation, the sounds of bystanders and children, along with the carousel drive motor are included. I don't know what ever became of that carousel or its band organ, but would guess they were moved to some collection somewhere. In any case, I have fond memories of wandering along the pier on a fine Saturday afternoon and watching and listening to the carousel and its excited young customers.

4 out of 5 stars Not the best but certainly not horrible for 1987.......2006-11-06

The Monkees earned their stripes on the 1986 comeback tour (I saw them twice when they swung through Florida) and i was absolutely spellbuond when I heard they had a brand new album coming out the following summer after all of their original albums charted the year before (in addition to a pretty decent showing on the charts for "That was Then, This Is Now"). The results, while not a totally 60s-sounding album, are not so bad for a band that had been apart the better part of twenty years. I was most impressed with "Heart & Soul" and felt they were totally robbed of a worthy hit single when MTV pulled a complete "sour grapes" move in retaliation for the Monkees not being able to make it to an MTV promotion in early 1987 and replaced "Heart & Soul" on their daily video countdown show (where it was getting extremely heavy voting) with "Honestly" by the Christian metal band Stryper. as a result, the single sank after charting somewhere around #80. "Heart & Soul" was easily as good as any single they'd recorded before and was actually similar to "Start Me up" by The Stones in style. there was no reason that song should have suffered the fate it was dealt. The rest of the album was a decent effort to bring their sound into the 80s, and while it wasn't always successful at doing so, it certainly wasn't anywhere near as unlistenable as some would have you believe. Take it for what it was, a chance to get some new material out there while the iron was hot, with a few pleasant surprises ("Midnight", "Gettin' In" and "Every Step of the Way" are definite high points) and the good sense to have Roger Bechirian produce the album. It might have been a different album with the participation of Mike Nesmith; but with him not in the picture save for one show of the '86 tour and not another appearcne from him until sometime in '89...not a bad effort. The live show was one not to be missed about this time either, with over three dozen songs in the set list and almost half of this album, a great mix of old and new...something for everyone. Judge for yourself and keep an open mind! My copy of the LP is autographed by all three of them from back then, so this holds an even greater memory for me!

3 out of 5 stars Love is a puzzle you need a solution to play........2006-03-27

This is the Monkees comeback album from 1987. Micky, Peter and Davy participated in it, but Mike did not. It's not a great album, but it's not as bad as some people make it out to be. Certainly, "Heart and Soul" is a great song that should have been a hit. I am also quite fond of both of Peter's songs, "Gettin' In" and "Since You Went Away". And there are some other good songs, like "Whole Wide World" and "Every Step of the Way". But then, Davy has to throw in a couple of unbearably drippy ballads ("Love You Forever" and "Counting on You"). And Micky's song "Midnight" is pretty bad, too. Other than that, it's a pretty good album, although it leans a bit too heavily on keyboards in an attempt to make it sound "modern", which 20 years later just makes it sound more dated.

4 out of 5 stars Good Come Back .......2005-04-21

It got me into the band. JUSTUS is very good too but more Rock.

4 out of 5 stars Best Reunion Album...Ever!.......2004-11-06

The Monkees had a huge success with "Then & Now...The Best of the Monkees" and this follow-up project from Rhino Records has even more spirit and life.

What if MORE OF THE MONKEES had been made in 1987 instead of 1967--it would have been this album! Radio missed some awesome songs--including: "Heart and Soul", "Every Step of the Way", "Secret Heart", and "Don't Bring Me Down".

However, what makes it a great reunion album is that it is loaded with reunion songs, tunes that say "welcome back" to old Monkees fans, and introduce new listeners to this great group; examples: Davy's "Long Way Home" and "(I'll) Love You Forever" and Peter Tork's "Gettin' In".

If you are a fan of the Monkees, or just getting into them, I would recommend this as a must (moreso than some of their original albums like CHANGES).

      Product Description

Jazz or rock? What do you call the music of Bellingham based band Jill Brazil? They manage to effortlessly fuse the two together into one mean mix. Take away that Tortoise reference that you have in your head because these guys play a completely different brand of jazzy rock. Jill Brazil is more of a schizo style of jazz similar to that of John Zorn (add more rock) or Mr. Bungle (take away the vocals and add more jazz). At times the band is super happy and easy on the ears and then at the next moment they grit their teeth and do a bit of metal riffing over top of the all-over-the-place saxophone. For only being around a short time and for playing such demanding music it really is quite amazing that the band has pulled together an album of this quality. Jill Brazil are also versed at many diverse time signatures which really lends itself to the overall feel of the album. The Songs of Jill Brazil is a super album with a great production album and provides fun all the way around.

          Album Description

Modern electropop with the best elements of the retro days of synthesizer attitude. Pool Waitress draws on Krafterkian percussion, electroclash female and male vocals, and ear-pleasing melodies made for both the dancefloor and the home. It is retro-electro the whole family can enjoy. Go ahead...dive into the pool.

          Customer Reviews:

          5 out of 5 stars Nice debut.......2004-10-24

Ummm...ok, moving past the 10 year olds and non-english speakers to a more serious look at the album... Diving Bored is a tight, nasty little electronoise album full of biting lyrics, tight synth rips and an ironic self-awareness of its genre. Clearly a lot of time and -yes-talent went into the construction of a debut that may alienate casual voyeurs a bit but is a solid and interesting addition to my stash. I'd like to see more from the label.

4 out of 5 stars Better than your average e-clash.......2004-01-07

I bought this CD on CDbaby.com and found these reviews here. I just wanted to say my peace. This music sounds exactly like its suppose to sound- its actually better than most e-clash I've listened to. Poolwaitress reminds me of FreezePop, which is my favorite!!! If you haven't heard of them -check them out. As far as the other reviewers- I think you are missing the point- this music is right on.

          5 out of 5 stars just what I wanted.......2004-01-05

Bright and quirky, full of attitude, this disk always has me dancing in my seat. My faves are "Blinds Are Drawn" and "Dream Some More", though there are many I really like. This is one of my new favorite electronic bands. It reminds me of late 70's 0r early 80's synth music.

1 out of 5 stars Easy Team Trak.......2003-11-22

Not so harsh, Team Trak. I understand your frustration with this album. I only listened to the brief downloads I got off the sight. Many of the vocals really accentuate the "S"'s. I found that a little annoying. The lyrics did not make much sense, but with the electro beat they are going for, that really does not matter. It is a Euro sound that is best experienced while rolling on "E". I probably could have put together a better beat on my Casio keyboard. Given these guys are obviously amateurs, I let them slide on their debut album. A bit overpriced for their skill level. They would have better luck trying to sell their album at a head shop for $5, rather than on Amazon. Please!!! They need to work on their overall sound and beats before attempting to go Euro. Either spend time working on your skills or stick to your day job.

          1 out of 5 stars Horrible.......2003-11-22

This has got to be the worst CD ever. I asked my parents for "Drowning Pool" and they got me this crap. What is up with the synthesizer? This will not sell in the U.S! How much does this cost in Euro Dollars? Maybe some freaks over there will buy it. I cannot believe my parents. They are now DNU's! I'll Trash Their Name! Code Name "HardHat"
At least I was able to use the CD case for my rolling papers!
