The Best of the Animals

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
While they're best remembered for "House of the Rising Sun," the Animals had more than one track. What about "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and "We've Gotta Get Out of this Place," to name but two, as well as a later incarnation's "San Franciscan Nights," Eric Burdon's ode to the flower power of 1967? Always rough and ready, the Animals were a blues band from Newcastle who never looked completely comfortable in their suits, but who nonetheless produced some great pieces of music--although whether there was ever quite enough to fill an entire album you have to judge for yourself. --Chris Nickson

4 out of 5 stars Not The Original Album.......2007-05-26

Although the cover of this is identical to the 1966 Album - this is NOT a reissue of that album. That album had 11 songs - two of which are NOT on this issue, which has 15 songs. It's a very good album and very representative of this oeriod of their output, but it should not be mistaken for a reissue of the 1966 MGM release.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Best.......2007-04-30

This is one of those classics that taken out of the cabinet - 30 years later - is still one of the greatest albums, blues, rock and roll or otherwise ever put together. My record is so scratched from over use and abuse through the years that I was forced to go to Amazon and buy the CD. Despite the skips, that rich, true groove, plastic fantastic and scratched album of mine will be sorely missed. I just couldn't bear to not hear the music.

5 out of 5 stars Great Band.......2007-03-31

This band produced alot of good songs back in the 60's.
Their most well known song and a huge hit was House Of The Rising Sun.Thats got a tune that just seems to stick in you head.Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood is another one of my favorites here.Eric Burdon and the band had a special sound. We Gotta Get Out Of This Place is another big hit i love that tune. It's My Life is another well known song from the Animals.
Bands like this were around for a short time, but made some of the best songs.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the British Invasion.......2006-10-17

The Animals were one of the more grittier of the British Invasion bands. This collections features their hits from the original line up. After this line up the band changed dramatically and it is difficult to compare the two except for the fact they both have Eric Burdon as the front man. House of the Rising Sun is a classic, but other lessor know tunes are just as great like Bo Diddley and Carry my Body. I've enjoyed this CD for a long time and you will to if you enjoy R&B\Blues influenced rock.

1 out of 5 stars Buy Retraspective instead.......2005-09-14

You will better off buying The Animals Retrospective because it has more hits on it.Like White Houses, Sky Pilot and San Franciscan Nights. This is cheap Greatest Hits and missing allots of hits

5 out of 5 stars Animals... Yea!.......2007-04-09

This is a pretty good compilation of the animals later work. It is regretable that it does not include the Bee Gees cover"To Love somebody" that was included on the original LP that only perhaps Janis Joplin covered better(debatable) I never liked the Bee Gees much but the Animals version rocks. But then just about anything the Animals did rocked.

5 out of 5 stars this is killer music!.......2006-08-25

Prior to 1970, Burdon/The Animals could do no wrong. This is Burdon leaving his soul/blues and exploring broader landscapes. Not only are the songs great, but also I love the production. It is so raw!

The best song...River Deep Mountain High. For Tina Turner, it was a dog/overblown tune. For Burden, wow! awesome.

If you are checking out this cd, you must be an Animal's fan. This rocks harder. is more raw, more experimental that the animals yet still has the animals vibe. This is a true 5 star compilation.

5 out of 5 stars The best.......2006-06-29

Excellent vocals and feet tapping rhythms, these songs all have meaning. Gooseflesh raising.

5 out of 5 stars The Other Animals.......2006-03-23

I hate to start a review with a backhanded compliment, but I was surprised at how good this CD is. Somehow, Burdon's work of the late 60s has gotten lost in the public mind. We hear his early work with the Animals on the radio all the time as well as his later collaboration, "Spill the Wine," that he did with War. But what about the period from 66 to 68? This CD ably fills the gap in the collective consciousness. Here, Burdon used a different group from the one that made him famous in England. His new bandmates sound like the Newcastle Animals on heavy doses of psychedelia. But the group never strays too far from Burdon's R & B and blues roots. Sure, there's goofy, poppy stuff like "Sky Pilot," but for the most part, the new Animals play good old rock and roll. The bass work on "A Girl Named Sandoz" is absolutely filthy. Lapdance filthy. Burdon's voice maybe isn't quite as deep and bellowing as on his earlier work with the Animals. It sounds a bit scratchier, a bit more whiskey soaked than his earlier stuff. But it's still great. There are no weak songs, which cover a wide range of musical styles. Monterrey, for example, recounts that 1967 concert while imitating the sound of some of the groups who performed there. When Burdon talks about the Who, his band shifts into Who mode. When he talks about Ravi Shankar, the sitar strikes up. And so on. It's a fun, imiginative song. The CD concludes with River Deep, Mountain High, which reminded me of the Faces's tune, "Stay with Me." It's fast, long, and rocks. I bought this CD for the one song, "When I was Young." Thankfully, the rest of it was just as good. Recommended listening for anyone who likes Eric Burdon or the Animals.

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation Of Late-60s Eric Burdon.......2005-08-12

THE BEST OF ERIC BURDON & THE ANIMALS, 1966-1968 is a great collection that starts off in the Memphis-Chicago-Detroit-Great Plains blues-rock-soul vein of early Animals, and then quickly moves into psychedelia. The most compelling cuts on this anthology, which I own on cassette, are "Monterey", a hymn to the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, and the devastating anti-war screed "Sky Pilot", which was released during the height of the Vietnam War but was actually not specifically about that war; rather, it was a condemnation of war in general seen through the eyes of a military chaplain. This is a great anthology which any fan of classic rock should own.

For those who want the most remembered passages of classical music's best-loved works, here's a package for you. On this bargain priced double-CD, you'll find music from 40 different classical composers; for the most part, the recordings excerpted here are some of the very best. Of course, you only get one Bach sampling (Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, played by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra) and one Mozart (A Little Night Music conducted by Herbert von Karajan), but this is still a nice collection--perhaps the starting point for a budding collection of classical music. This set's downfall? Unfortunately, though the liner notes discuss the evolution of classical music chronologically, the tracks are programmed in alphabetical order by composer's last name. This makes for some startling transitions! Emil Gilels's reflective performance of the Adagio from Beethoven's "Moonlight" sonata is followed by the crashing cymbals and bombast of Carmen's "March of the Toreadors," a recipe for a heart attack if there ever was one. Still, there's something here for everyone and the liner notes even explain what movies this music can be found in. A nice touch. --Jason Verlinde

1 out of 5 stars Waste of money.......2006-01-12

Watch out for the volume leveling mentioned in another review. Surely the compliers could have come up with a better sort order than by composer. The change in tempo/volume between pieces makes it impossible to enjoy. My two CD's ended up in the trash.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music Compilation.......2005-08-15

This is a great CD full of many songs that you will recognize and enjoy. If you are someone who likes classical music but doesn't necessarily know which songs or which composers you like, then this CD is for you. You will likely recognize many of the songs as the classical songs you would have picked out to be your favorites.

1 out of 5 stars If you like classical music don't buy this CD........2005-03-11

Most of the tracks were chopped down to 3-4 minutes so some of the best parts of the compositions are missing. I don't know what I was thinking trying to buy 40 classical songs on two CD's. If you really want to enjoy the music you would do better to purchase a CD with fewer, but better quality tracks.

5 out of 5 stars A must for anyone wanting the staples of classical music.......2005-02-23

In my years of experience teaching Fine Arts to high school students, I know that the majority, if not all, of the music included on this album is commonly used in collge music appreciation courses. This is an excellent sample of truly all the "greatest hits" of classical music. My students enjoy listening to the music and have later told me when take their required music apreciation courses in college that they "already know it all" because of this CD! The recordings are clear, the selections are passionate, and the listener will gain a familiarity with all of the most commonly heard classical music used in tv commercials, movies, etc.
I recommend this album, along with the boxed set, "Age of the Classics" for anyone who is interested in becoming familiar with the most famous staples of classical music.

5 out of 5 stars A great compilation.......2005-02-09

This cd somes up some of the greatest pieces of instrumental (and is some cases choral) music ever written. It is a great starter for a beginning classical music lover or a quick and easy all-in-one for those of us who study classical music for a living. I highly recommend this cd to anyone who wants to love or already does love classical music.

5 out of 5 stars Melodic phrasing.......2007-05-03

Camille Saint-Saens was merciless in composing a score, often demanding performances that crowded the very limits of what is possible. Consequently, there are a lot of recordings that are frustrating to listen to because one can hear where the work is close but unfulfilled. This anthology of recordings compiled by Philips is the holy grail of Saint-Saens because the choice of conductors and artists was obviously based on melodic phrasing. There is no better performance of the seamless second movement or of the third movement's full string-section counterpoint in Violin Concerto No. 3. This CD set has the best Danse Macabre ever done; people think they know this symphonic poem, but unless they have heard the one conducted by Bernard Haitink, they have not. This Danse Macabre is symphonic perfection. Again, people think they know the Introduction and Rondo capriccioso, but the one with Henryk Szeryng playing violin and conducted by Edouard Van Remoortel transcends and bewilders the mind. Both piano concerti, No 2 and especially No. 4, these works open a new musical paradigm, the piano played by Michele Campanella in No. 4 making music only Saint-Saens knew a piano could make. The undeniable conclusion is that the performances were searched for and chosen as a tour de force of melodic phrasing, with an impressionist composer who imagined brilliance beyond this world.

5 out of 5 stars This is a must have CD.......2007-04-14

I must admit that the Penguin Guide was overly critical of this CD. They said the recording of the Organ Symphony was not exciting and they are certainly far from being correct. The standard by which I judge the Symphony is mainly (if not almost) purely based on the finale. Out of the recordings I have heard this is the finest account. I found the Ormandy version a bit too fast forsaking the majestic feel. The Levine version is well played, but there just seems to be some issue with balance and heaven forbid the Berlin Philharmonic percussionists making a mistake near the end (they played 2 bars late). Dutoit's account is fairly similar to this recording, but I find Edo de Waart's recording has a more 'natural' and richer sound. There is something magical in the finale, the organ is brilliantly captured throughout. Polished, balanced, finely controlled tempi and well-executed this is the best version of the Organ Symphony. If you're starting a Saint-Saens' collection, this 2CD set will certainly not disappoint. The accounts of the other pieces are first-rate.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Recording.......2003-10-03

As an orchestral player (violinist, violist) and student conductor who is currently in a performance cycle of Symphony No. 3 "Organ", I think that this is one of the best recordings I have heard of the symphony. I recommend it to anyone who is looking for great balances and a full sound of an orchestra!

5 out of 5 stars Superb Collection.......2000-11-05

This was my first Saint-Saëns CD, and I did not quite know what to expect. It was love at first hear(?!). An excellent collection, ranging from the humorous "Carnival of the Animals" to the serious Organ Symphony. If you are not familiar with Saint-Saëns, I would strongly recommend this collection as a great introduction.

5 out of 5 stars The Trail Less Traveled.......2007-07-16

Anyone that lives on a farm will love the words to this music. It doesn't hurt any that the music also has the right rhythm for farm life. The songs describe farm life and it is the road less traveled now days. You have a better quality of life and learn responsibilities that you would never have learned otherwise. This CD reflects it perfectly.

5 out of 5 stars moving lyrics.......2007-06-18

An other great and moving album by Mary Ann Kennedy. Only people who have experienced deep relationships with horses (and other animal friend) can appreciate the depth of these lyrics and this music. Heart felt and so typical.

5 out of 5 stars totally awesome.......2007-01-09

my daughter and I listen to this all the time and I have bought several to give to horse-friends. I especially appreciate "Gotta Go Feed" and the Blue Heeler song... If you have a hoard of animals... especially horses and the things that go with them... you'll relate to every song.

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate CD for the horse, dog & cat lover!.......2004-02-08

5 out of 5 stars Simply Awesome.......2004-11-19

Whether you're really into classical music or just a casual listener, you can't go wrong with this CD. The first work, Carnival of the Animals, is sheer fun. The melodies and choice of instruments really convey the essence of each animal, while Saint-Saens' humor and wit shine through in the subtle jabs he takes at critics and woefully inept piano students. Carnival is also wonderful for children, as they can learn to identify the selections with their favorite animals.

If that weren't enough, the rest of the selections are just as fantastic. Like the above reviewer, I love Danse Macabre and its ingenious use of strings, but Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso is not to be missed either. I can honestly say that not a single track on this CD disappointed me, and would highly recommend it to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best CDs I own.......2000-06-17

SAint-Saens ability to convey certian feelings and emotions through music amazes me. This Cd is one of my personal favorites. I own two of them... one for my car and the other for my house. My particular favorite is Danse Macabre. The use of the violin to convey a "ghost fiddler" boggles my mind. I can almost picture it all happening. Disney should definitly think about putting this in the next Fantasia. Anyone who loves classical music should definitly own this CD!

    5 out of 5 stars Sixties R+B from Newcastle.......2005-02-22

The Animals, a group that included Eric Burdon and Alan Price, were the first major pop stars to emerge from Newcastle, a city located about 300 miles north of London, therefore far removed from where most talent scouts were searching. It is fortunate for us all that the Animals were discovered because they recorded some of the best R+B music to come out of the UK in the sixties.

Their biggest hit was House of the rising sun, a re-working of a folk song (apparently inspired by Josh White's version of the song) that gave them a transatlantic number one hit. They had five other top ten UK hits with Mickie Most as their producer, these being I'm crying, Don't let me be misunderstood (a cover of a Nina Simone song), Bring it on home to me (a Sam Cooke cover), We gotta get out of this place (the version included here is the UK version - a markedly different recording was released in America but was unavailable for inclusion in this set) and It's my life.

Apart from their singles, the Animals recorded many other covers including Boom boom, Dimples, I'm mad again (all John Lee Hooker), Talking about you and I believe to my soul (both Ray Charles). These covers clearly demonstrate what some of their main influences were, but they also wrote some of their own songs.

The Animals split with their produce, Mickie Most, and switched to another record label (Decca), where they had some success using the name Eric Burdon and the Animals, including another UK top ten hit (Don't bring me down,) and one that just missed the UK top en (Inside looking out).

All the tracks mentioned so far are included, but thy changed labels again (to MGM). The MGM tracks, notably San Franciscan nights, are not included here. Nevertheless, this is a great introduction to the music of the Animals. You can easily find San Franciscan nights elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Compilation To Date!.......2002-07-28

This is by far the best compilation of hits to date! It includes 9 out of the 10 TOP 40 U.S. Hits The Animals had. There is no CD out there yet that has all 10 of their top 40 hits. The only one it is missing is See See Rider. The Animals have LOADS of other great tracks that weren't hits, but if it's a collection of hits you're looking for, this is the one to get!

4 out of 5 stars vintage Hugh Martin score a complete delight.......2004-12-23

LOVE FROM JUDY, based on Jean Webster's novel 'Daddy Long Legs', is pure vintage Hugh Martin. The show never made it to Broadway, instead enjoying a sold-out London season and an extensive provincial tour.

Jean Carson played Jerusha Abbott, an orphan at the John Grier Home who is mysteriously supported by a never-named benefactor. June Whitfield, Johnny Brandon, Adelaide Hall and Bill O'Connor round out the strong leading cast. Barbara Windsor played one of the orphans (for some interesting backstage reminisces about LOVE FROM JUDY check out Barbara Windsor's autobiography 'All of Me').

The Hugh Martin-Jack Gray score is quite lovely from what is featured on this disc (the recordings were originally designed to fit 4 sides of a set of 78's). LOVE FROM JUDY runs a scant 20 minutes, so the disc has been filled out with extensive bonus material.

We get Jean Carson singing "A Kiss to Build a Dream On", "Hug Me a Hug" and "Barrels and Barrels of Roses" (on the 2 former tracks she's joined by her then-husband Bill Lowe); Johnny Brandon singing 5 numbers including his mega-hit "Glow Worm"; and Adelaide Hall singing 2 great numbers. June Whitfield sings 5 numbers including two songs from GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES!

There are also selections from the Frank Loesser score of HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN; and a full-cast presentation of numbers from Disney's PETER PAN (both feature Jean Carson and Johnny Brandon).
