5 out of 5 stars Procol who?.......2007-04-27

The year of 1967 was an incredible year for music. You had Disraeli Gears, Sgt. Peppers, The Doors, and many other amazing albums. Oh and you also get "A Whiter Shade of Pale" released by Procol Harum. Procol Harum is one of those forgotten bands of the 60's, lost in the big names of the Beatles, Stones, and The Who. But they should not be forgotten and what better way to commemorate them by picking up "A Whiter Shade of Pale" which happens to be one of the finest albums, dare i say, ever made.

It starts off with the classic song "A Whiter Shade of Pale" which sounds like church with all the organs played beautifully by Matthew Fisher. And those lyrics, simply majestic, Keith Reid ( who wrote all of Procol's material ) is one of the finest lyricist of all time. His words are pure poetry.

After the majestic "A Whiter Shade of Pale" we dive into the rest of the album which is also incredibly good and not just filler as some people tend to think. "Conquistador" is probably the second best track behind the opener. I also love the bass on that song. "She Wandered Through the Garden Fence" is alot of fun to listen to with lyrics that are really catchy. "Something Following Me" is more serious in tone but the lyrics once again are incredible as is the arrangement. "Mabel" is definetly a nod to Bob Dylan, "Cerdes ( Outside the Gates ) is probably the darkest song on the album but still magnificent. "A Christmas Camel" has a tone very similiar to Bob Dylan's "Ballad of a Thin Man". If there were any throwaways on this album it would be the next three "Kaleidoscope", "Salad Days", and "Good Captain Clack" but none of these songs are terrible and still manage to be listenable. The album closes on the instrumental "Repent Walpurgis" which is eerie but magnificent.

But that's not all. You also get 4 bonus songs which include two okay ones ( Limestreet Blues and Monseigneur Armand ) and two fantastic ones ( Homburg and Seem To Have The Blues All The Time.) The latter of the two includes my favorite lyric of the album "Well I owed a lot of money/I was weak and easily led/I tried to rob a bank/ The cashier shot me dead".

You may have not heard of this album, this group, or even the title song but if you like classic rock or just good music in general. Give this band a try. They might suprise you.

5 out of 5 stars One of the great rock albums!.......2007-03-01

Ketih Reid, Procol Harum's lyricist, labels this album the best the group produced, and who am I to disagree? Listening to the album tonight, almost four decades since I was enthralled by the album as a teenager, I am amazed at its durable quality. I listen to only a few rock albums of my youth, but none more than this one. The combination of stunningly vivid and eloquent lyrics, fabulous keyboard and lead guitar playing, and wonderful variations on great themes from classical music make this album one of my favorites of all time. Thirty-nine years on, this album thrills me very time I listen to it.

5 out of 5 stars just as I remember it.......2007-02-07

The CD is just as I remember the album from waaaaay back in the late 60's. It's great! Plus, the 4 bonus tracks were a pleasant surprise.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......1999-01-07

John Lennon's favorite album to get high to features two truly great church-organ-rock-style songs, the title track and "Homburg." They just don't make 'em like this anymore, with such attempts at sophistication. Many of the other tracks are worthwhile too.

5 out of 5 stars blast.......1999-01-04

This album is a blast back to the ever-changing soundtrack of my youth. Of course, I had this on 8-track, and that, coupled with the poor mono mix of the time, made a somewhat muddy listening experience, but the great music came shining brightly through. This is a great piece of work...

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Pure & Beautiful.......2005-10-31

If you buy no other classical music, buy this collection. CD 1 (Relax) is perfect for dinner, quiet entertaining or just soft music while you're working. From "Come Away With Me", to "Whiter Shade of Pale" to "Knights in White Satin"... each piece is it's own movement - and moved you will be... Perfect for a romantic evening. CD2 is more robust, but equally entertaining. "Layla", "Livin On A Prayer", Stairway to Heaven", "Run to You" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" - you owe it to yourself to hear these licks performed by the RPO.

5 out of 5 stars Symphonic Rock.......2005-07-25

It really isn't rock, but it is a very pleasant presentation of popular music, rendered in creative ways by a full symphony orchestra. It sounds like the orchestra had a great time making these CD's.

3 out of 5 stars pleasant easy listening.......2005-07-19

It's not extremely interesting music, but nice background, relaxing and pleasant with full orchestra. Not a bad buy at all!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD.......2005-03-20

I received this as a present and at first I wasn't sure if I would like it because I don't like some of the original songs, but there's something about hearing the orchestra play that makes me like all of them. Just try it out.

well, if you like elevator music then you should get this cd. if not then dont waste your time, its lame. big time lame. just listen to the audio samples im so glad i didn't waste my money on this piece of crap.

While the sales of Sarah Brightman's ambitious, Middle Eastern-themed 2003 album Harem may have fallen short of its predecessor, the veteran UK chanteuse's popularity as a live performer has only mushroomed. This live recording of her ambitious, sold-out Harem World Tour engagement at Las Vegas' MGM Grand Arena is testament to that appeal, begging the question: Will Brightman become the Grateful Dead of classical crossover? Indeed, abetted by the rich sonic textures of longtime producer/collaborator Frank Peterson, the worldbeat conceits of her recent studio recordings are folded into a larger, even more expansive live vision here. Brightman's overt dramatic instincts and oft-chaemeleonic vocal abilities drive a slate of material that stretches from the Arabian Nights/Madame Butterflypastiche of Harem's seductive "It's A Beautiful Day" through surprisingly effective classical/rock reinventions of Kansas' "Dust in the Wind" and The Moody Blues' chestnut "Nights in White Satin" to expected classical bowings "Nessun Dorma" and the obligatory nod to "Phantom of the Opera" Amazon.com

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING! She is so much better live!.......2006-12-02

This CD rocks! This is Sarah Brightman on her Harem World Tour, and this performance was recorded at her stop in Las Vegas. The first two tracks, "Kama Surta" and "Harem Overture" debut from her newest album, entitled HAREM. The two tracks are connected, but in the actual Harem Tour, the full piece "Harem" is sung. If you go to www.youtube.com and type in "Harem Tour" in the Search Bar, you can see live videos. I would prefer that the album has placed "Harem" instead of these other two tracks. The third track, "It's A Beautiful Day", is from Madame Butterfly, written by Puccini. This version is Brightman's twist, which some more pop and some English. It's pretty cool. The fourth track on the album, "Dust in the Wind" is from EDEN, an amazing album. Track 5 is, "Who Wants to Live Forever", and it seems as though Brightman never creates a tour without putting this piece in it. It's a beautiful tribute to Queen's rendition. Track Six is "Anytime, Anywhere", also from EDEN. I'm not really into the Foreign Language - English songs, but this works very well, especially because she ends the song with the classical foreign language. The seventh track is Brightman's rendition of Dvorak's "Song to the Moon", or "La Luna". The track is beautiful! The eighth track is Puccini's "Nessun Dorma", and Sarah masters this beautifully! There is no other soprano I know that can sing this piece one octave up and can hold the ending note for ever!!! Track 9 is "The War is Over", which is followed by "Free", both from HAREM. Track 11 is "A Whiter Shade of Pale", from LA LUNA. It's beautiful to listen to. Sarah's version is very gentle, but has a lot of energy in the chorus. The twelfth track on this album is "Twisted Every Way", followed by an instrumental version of "The Phantom of the Opera" Theme. The next track is "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again", which is extended at the end, in which you hear some men cry out "WE LOVE YOU SARAH!", and she responds cutely with an, "I love you, too." The audience laughs! Track 14 is "Time to Say Goodbye", the duet that made Andrea Bocelli famous, and skyrocketed as the number one single sold in German history! The last live track on the album is "A Question of Honour", from "Fly", which is awesome! The last track on the album is a bonus track, which I don't really prefer. However, the whole album is simply amazing. I much prefer Sarah when she is live. She has a more magical quality! If you love Sarah Brightman, then you will love this album.

ALSO RECOMMENDED : Since there is so much Sarah Brightman to choose from, I also recommend EDEN, TIME TO SAY GOODBYE, LA LUNA, CLASSICS, and DIVA.

What an album, absolutly beautiful!
We, the fans of this great artist finelly have in our hands a live album, and it's amazing:
-The voice is totaly live, she sang about 24 complete songs in the show, but the album only contains 15.
-Snow In The Sahara is a lovely song.

If you have the chase of get this alubum, don't doubt and get it; It wond disapoint you!

5 out of 5 stars astounding performance.......2005-06-07

an impeccable concert experience that successfully elevates the album to majestic heights. I had long been a fan of Dead Can Dance and the unparalleled work of Lisa Gerrard. When Sarah Brightman ventured into these Middle Eastern sounds on the Harem disc, I thought it was too derivative of the Dead Can Dance sounds (there is even a sample used on one of SB's songs that had previously been used within DCD).

However, experiencing this epic and intensely mystical concert compelled me to realize the individual and unique glory of Sarah Brightman. Also, this concert is so phenomenally entertaining at many levels that I couldn't help but fall absolutely in love with the special magic of Sarah Brightman. Obviously, the expansive Middle Eastern milieu can accommodate more than one angelic vocalist!

I now consider Lisa Gerrard and Sarah Brightman to be geniuses who both warrant goddess status in the pantheon of lyrical greats. To see either one of them perform live is surely one of the most powerful and memorable sensory experiences one could ever have!

4 out of 5 stars Great, of course.......2005-03-18

Sarah's voice and style are terrific, as usual. However, I have to say that her version of Anggun's "Snow on the Sahara" is fairly bland, especially compared to the original Anggun version. Sarah has the chops but lacks soul on this great song. Everything els here is very nice.

1 out of 5 stars Schmaltz - German for Bad.......2006-01-30

Hard to believe that Cafe Del Mar has sunk to this level.

This is NOT "chill," meditative, relaxing or even New Age music.

This is a round-up of the best "relaxing" classical music as performed ineptly and cheaply by nobody in particular.

(...). It's heartless and dull. It's also pointless and sad that Cafe Del Mar would stamp their name on anything.

If you want "relaxing" classical music and you're just starting out in collecting classical or you're not a purist and want music for dinner or a relaxing evening, you would be better off listening to any of these from Amazon (see link below) locked in a wooden box and cotton stuffed in your ears than the tripe of the absolutely horrible, horrible Café del Mar: Classics, Vol. 2.

1 out of 5 stars This is Sarah?????? - A Whiter Shade of Pale/A Question of Honor "Enhanced" (?) CD.......2007-06-09

For Sarah Brightman fans who love her voice, style, delivery, and choice of music, this is one really disappointing album. I had no idea what I was getting into when I ordered it, and am going to contact the seller as quickly as possible and try to return it. The biggest "attraction" (if you want to call it that) of this album is a GREAT DEAL of extremely loud percussion, especially drums. For those who feel that this type of noise is music, leth them have it!!

My only other beef with Sarah is repetition of numbers on numerous CD's! I keep hoping she will come out with some albums of totally new material!!! So much of what she has done is absolutely delightful, and I've bought and loved many of her CD's.! The only other album I really haven't liked is "Harem." A bit off course for Sarah, in my estimation. Why damage a working image???

5 out of 5 stars Great Voice/Great Music.......2005-01-11

I was really intrigued by Emma Shapplin's, "Spente le Stelle" a couple years ago. Sarah Brightman is also along these lines...she has an incredible voice (one of the best I've ever heard) and her fearless challange of mixing opera and trance is great. My favorites are the ATB mixes for the first song and the very last mix for the second song (which is a true opera/trance mix). But you really have to be open to this type of mix to enjoy it. In any case, just listening to Sarah Brightman sing anything is captivating.

4 out of 5 stars Some hits, some misses.......2004-01-22

I haven't been a Sarah Brightman far too long, maybe two years I think. I am not a fan of opera music by all means, a lot of it bores me or gets on my last nerves. Although her music isn't pure opera, Sarah still manages to take elements of opera music and make it interesting for this music fan. I think Sarah has one of the most beautiful voices on this planet. She sings like an angel. My first Sarah Brightman album was 2000's "La Luna", which remains a personal fave of mine. One of my favorite songs on the album is the Procol Harum cover "A Whiter Shade of Pale". Sarah does a stunning interpretation of the classic rock song. I came across the single for "A White Shade of Pale/A Question of Honour" a couple of years ago and was intrigued to see that there were remixes of the songs. I was eager to hear what Sarah would sound like remixed. There were some good mixes and some not-so good mixes. I wasn't too fond of the Ecstasy mix of "A Whiter Shade of Pale". As much as I enjoy Rhys Fulber's work in general, I didn't think he did a great job remixing this particular song. It was too mellow. I preferred the more uptempo remixes like the ATB remix and my personal favorite the Paralyzer Remix, a killer trance track. As far as "A Question of Honour", the Pech remix got on my nerves. How typically cheesy. Of all the remixes, I felt that the Damage Control remix was the best although I did enjoy the Knock Out mix and Tom Lord-Alge's mix. Despite its flaws, I would just love it if Sarah would put out more remixes of her songs. That would totally rock my world. It would show a totally different side of Sarah's music that listeners rarely hear.

5 out of 5 stars WHAT CAN I SAY?.......2002-08-19

I keep buying her recordings and I paid good money to go to her concerts. I do not know if she is the best, but there are not too many equals to her either. This CD is right on the top of the world.

5 out of 5 stars LOVELY.......2002-08-18

She is lovely, songs are lovely, and her voice is angelic.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent new CD with classic songs .......2006-03-22

New CD from Japan by Cube Records delivers classic songs from the British rock group Procol Harum, with what seems to be flawless audio quality. Their huge, timeless classic "A Whiter Shade of Pale" never sounded better! And, this is followed by their other big hit in the USA, "Conquistador." Comes with a shiny, miniature paper jacket with design from the original album cover and four extra songs not listed on the jacket: "Lime Street Blues," "Homburg," "Monsieur Armand," and "Seem to Have the Blues All the Time." It would have been nice if all of the extra written material provided with the CD, instead of just some of it, was in English as well as in Japanese. The very high monaural audio quality and the attractive protective jacket (written in English) more than compensate for this one shortcoming, however, and anyone getting this CD is still likely to be very pleased.

    Album Description

When Procol Harum's Gary Brooker wanted to organize a concert to help raise money for the beautiful 13th Century church of St. Mary & All Saints in rural Surrey, England, he not only chose some of his finest musician friends to help out with the cause, but he also went on to record the event and release it on a fan club cd in a very limited run of 1000 units. This rare release Within Our House went on to become a highly collectable recording when the obvious happened as it sold out in a matter of days. However, with Gary Brooker's blessings, Friday Music is now releasing this fine live recording for the first time in North America, to go along with the extensive Procol Harum Remasters series.

Procol Harum classics like "A Salty Dog" and "Holding On" get the five star treatment from this eclectic group of musicians. Brooker's vocals and piano work are stellar throughout the recording and his emotional readings of the gospel and religious material is second to none, as his interpretation of the classic Elvis Presley hit "Peace in the Valley" really conveys the true meaning of this charitable event.

Other Procol Harum favorites like "The Long Goodbye" and the classic "Nothing but the Truth" are truly inspiring in the church environment, as the album closes with a heart rendering version of their number one classic "A Whiter Shade of Pale."

The applause you will hear from this lucky audience will attest that this was a successful night for everyone involved with this wonderful event. This newly remastered Friday Music disc bring this fine concert to light for the first time in North America. Procol Harum fans rejoice!

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Odd But Compelling.......2005-04-25

This benefit concert, recorded September 28, 1996 in a big old stone church, features an odd combination of spirituals, madrigals, old Procol tunes and one Elvis impersonation. Backing Gary Brooker are a gospel choir, string quartet, and the Gary Brooker Ensemble, four musicians who are NOT introduced as the New Procol Harum.

Procol fans will surely enjoy the Procol tunes, but the unabashed religious nature of many of the other tunes may throw them off. The acoustics are grand and Gary sounds great, but one wonders exactly which market this release is aimed for. Hopefully the concert raised all the funds needed, because the program here -- part classical, part Christian, part rock & roll -- seems destined to find few devotees of all three.

5 out of 5 stars Great single disc selection of under rated band.......2002-12-01

You probably only know their two biggest hits-- A Whiter Shade of Pale and Conquistador. There was so much more to this ambitious, earthy and memorable band. Gary Brooker's soulful vocals managed to integrate R&B grit with touches of prog rock. A major if forgotten influence, Procol Harum's best work touches on a number of different styles.

This single disc collection collates their best album tracks and singles onto a single disc. While it could have made room for a number of other key album tracks such as Crucification Lane and Whisky Train. The sound quality is pretty good but the cover of the CD is about as godawful as one could imagine. Hey, even a photo would be better than the pretentious mess of the cover.
