Beck-Ola [Original recording remastered]

While Truth, the first Jeff Beck Group album, has often been touted as the blueprint for Led Zeppelin and much of the bombastic blues rock that followed, the group's sophomore outing arguably comes closer to fitting that bill. Which is to say it's decidedly heavier, if less ambitious and more narrowly focused, than its heralded predecessor. Beck and company (a young Rod Stewart in peak form, Ron Wood on bass, Tony Newman on drums, and here augmented by keyboardist Nicky Hopkins) don't get much more adventuresome here than reworking Elvis Presley chestnuts "All Shook Up" and "Jailhouse Rock" with almost comic lugubriousness, especially in the drunken, sinewy tones the ax prodigy coaxes from his instrument. That tightening of dynamics thus transforms the lovely Hopkins instrumental showcase "Girl from Mill Valley" into a placid island in a sea of greasy grooves. Truth gave us Beck's tasteful, if quirky heart, Beck-Ola is a jolt of his prodigious musical libido--and damned if less almost isn't more. This reissue features a long overdue remastering from the original source tapes. --Jerry McCulley

Ouch! My Ears!.......2007-03-30
To better understand Jeff Beck's Music, you must better understand Jeff, first. Considered by many to be the best Rock guitarist of all time, he didn't always receive the recognition that he thought that he deserved. Having to step in as a replacement guitarist for Eric Clapton when he joined the Yardbirds may have fanned the flames in the beginning. And after pioneering in Distortion, Feedback, and Fuzz Tone, he dropped out and formed his own band, but before the TRUTH album was released, Jimi Hendrix came to town and stole some of Jeff's thunder, doing exactly the same things Jeff was doing on stage years earlier with the Yardbirds. If that wasn't bad enough, Jeff had a fit when he heard those early Led Zeppelin records. His good pal, Jimmy Page, stole alot of his ideas and drove them into the ground! (By the way, whatever happened to "Pagey"?) So Jeff really had an ATTITUDE by the time BECK-OLA was recorded. There's alot of Thunder and Lightning on this record! Perhaps those Zeppelin Lps helped steer Jeff in this direction after all, because it was a complete departure from the TRUTH album. BECK-OLA has a Live feel to it, and alot of noise, too. There was alot of tension within this group at the time, getting ready to explode, and it did. Too Bad.
Beck-Ola Redux.......2007-03-07
Look, I've reviewed this incendiary slab of raw power at least twice for amazon (the US edition from 2000 and the UK EMI from 2004 on which this version is based), and to keep it short and simple: Jeff Beck, Ron Wood, Rod Stewart, Nicky Hopkins, and Tony Newman's 1969 classic gets better with age, presages skronk, grunge, hard rock and "metal" (without the illusion of control), and injects funk into its punk: the Stooges' "Funhouse" meets Led Zep circa disc one of "Pyisical Graffiti"... The unparalleled, explosive, apocalyptic intensity of the former crossed with Zep's musicianship (but utterly lacking Page's innate sense of calculation, which is partly why the JBG aren't "classic rock" radio staples). 1968's "Truth" was of course the template for the Zep debut, but this is something altogether wilder, crazier, a go for broke recording that seems to end violently, suddenly (the tape splice at the end of 'Rice Pudding' famously appropriated by the Beatles on "Abbey Road"). Crank this loud enough, pedal to the floor (Beck's band fits the idea of the guitarist's passion for racing souped up cars) and you might imagine that splice is an inevitable power outtage.
Ok, more in the other "Beck-Ola" reviews, but here's the rub: I'd swear this is cut from a different master from that 2004 (UK) EMI edition, which features the very same bonus tracks. There's a smokey haze in here, a subtle air of containment that gets in the way - this Legacy edition smolders, but it lacks the fire of the EMI, that reaches right out and scorches you through your speakers.(The bonus cuts, all worthwhile, interestingly sound the same - hence my feeling that the UK and US 'original masters' are different. Other indications include the fact that the timings vary by a few seconds on at least a couple songs). The difference is right there on Beck's vicious SKWAAAOW emitted right before Wood's phat bass solo on "Spanish Boots" - he's in the room with you on the EMI.
This is wild, truly "alternative" stuff, the inevitable violent crash was right around the next hairpin turn: "Beck-Ola" was recorded in April '69, the JBG was in pieces by the end of July, Ron and Rod off to the Faces, Hopkins to the Stones and the Airplane, and Beck of course battered and bruised in a real car crash, caused, it is rumored, by a hallucination he experienced in which he BELIEVED Vanilla Fudge was revealed to be rock 'n' roll's great white hope and where his very own destiny lie.
Oh well, click on over and get those two UK Beck Group classics while they last!
No Sophomore Slump.......2007-02-09
Beck-Ola (1969) Jeff Beck's second studio album.
Before Led Zeppelin came along and blew everyone away, Jeff Beck had helped create that hard and heavy blues sound with "Truth", and here, on the almost-as-good "Beck-Ola", Jeff and the gang play it loud and don't look back. Whether it's a cover of an old song or something completely new, Beck finished the sound that he had started on the previous album and, unfortunately, watched as his old bandmate rose to levels of super-stardom.
The album kicks off with a cover of the Elvis classic "All Shook Up". Rod Stewart's vocals are incredible, and the heavy riff planted by Beck, not to mention the skillfully played bass by Ron Wood and piano by Nicky Hopkins, is awesome and practically danceable, making a sort of boogie-rock. There is also the instrumental "Girl From Mill Valley", written and performed mostly by Nicky Hopkins. While not a standout track, it is certainly easy on the ear, the only song on the album like that. Next is the big rocker and cover, "Jailhouse Rock". Sometimes I think that Beck and Stewart should have just gone through Elvis's catalogue and covered his songs, because both of them are excellent.
The extra tracks are also interesting, though the sound quality isn't all that great on the alternate takes of the covers. It doesn't bring the album down, but it would have been nice if they could have been restored a bit better. In the end, "Beck-Ola" is a huge triumph for Beck, and is the last album to feature Stewart, Wood, and Hopkins. Internal conflicts would dissolve this group before they could become even greater.
this is your dady's rock n roll.......2007-02-03
What made these musicians famous is brillant, and crystal clear. This is the group that brought an 18 yr. old rod stewart to the states and taught him how to put together the music and the show to go with it. This is the group that gave birth to Cactus, the american version of Led Zep. No where else have I been able to appreciate Ron Woods as the consumate rock bass player then on this album. Without the work of nikki hopkins and ansley dunbar to carry the engine this could not have been the high performance vehicle it was. And last of all and best of all is Jeff Beck at his young best. Want to play lead guitar? Learn every lick on this recording and you might be ready to learn some Jimmie Hendrix. Hendrix and Beck are twin suns in the same universe, the rest of us just get to watch!
Rock the remasters!.......2006-12-30
Along with it's predecessor Truth, this is the one-two punch of blues butt kicking that Jeff Beck unleashed on the world in the days before Led Zeppelin exploded globally and buried rock and blues in an avalance of heavy-handed overkill. This new release with the excellent inclusion of Sweet Little Angel is worth the replacement of your oldie, especially at the budget price. It's pretty much the same format as Truth, e.g. blues covers and what not, but there is great original stuff in Plyth and Rice Pudding (check out the riff stolen by Hendrix for In From the Storm) as well as some fun and grooving covers of stuff made famous by Elvis. The liner notes again have some good Beck wit and guitarists will find plenty of coursework to learn and master.
So many "experts" are quick to mention Stevie Ray, Clapton, Page, Van Halen, and Jimi as the big guitar gods, but if this guy isn't one of the first names out of your mouth, then you really don't know what you're talking about.

Rod and Jeff at their Greasiest! Recorded Loud to be Played Loud!.......2007-01-31
This is when Rod was a hard rock belter and Jeff was a crazy wildman of the Gibson Les Paul. The energy here makes up for the lousy sound, I think they blew a few microphones here with the volume.
Par excellence~.......2007-01-08
I must admit I am very biased toward Jeff Beck. There are many fine guitarists, but to me Jeff Beck is the best. With Rod Stewart on vocals and Ron Wood on bass, you've got a supergroup that puts all the rest, to shame. Backed up with the battery of Nicky Hopkins on piano, and Tony Newman on drums, there are no bad tunes on this fantastic album.
While the World focused its attention on Led Zeppelin, the Jeff Beck Group was afforded little attention in its short shelf life. With tunes like "Jailhouse Rock", "All Shook Up", "Plynth", and "Rice Pudding" it's flying by the seat of the pants time. My only gripe is the recording sounds a bit "ragged" around the edges. However, it stands the test of time. I'll take Beck, to Clapton, Page, Holdsworth or Van Halen any day. Buy this CD, and you won't be sorry. And while you're at it, listen to how Nicky Hopkins genius augments their sound beautifully.
great album!To short........2006-11-13
This album is classic beck but its to short.and most of the material is not original.but there are some great led zep style songs but this is much better guitar.and the jeff beck group was out before led ripoff zeppelin.
an odd situation.......2006-08-08
On one hand, there's little original material here, but on the other: "The Plynth', perhaps the best thing Beck -or- Stewart have done, let alone done together...and although many find the instrumental "Rice Pudding" to be a bit meandering, I don't, and find it's loose structure to contain some of the best band interaction in all of rock. These two tracks alone bring this project up to '5'.

Jeff Beck Group: Explosive.......2006-07-21
If the Jeff Beck Group's 1968 debut, "Truth" is the blueprint for Led Zeppelin's debut as well as much of what we might call hard rock or metal through the '70s (Van Halen, etc) and beyond, "Beck-Ola," the 1969 followup is savage, malevelont, and chaotic, albeit less accessable. Certainly the more calculating Jimmy Page never put out anything quite so raw, in every sense of the word. The edgy quality makes it no surprise that the amazing lineup - Beck, Ron Wood, Rod Stewart, Nicky Hopkins, and in place of Mick Waller, drummer Tony Newman - broke up three months after its completion.
Beck has switched to a '54 Stratocaster, and "Beck-Ola" suggests Led Zeppelin having a showdown with the Stooges circa "Funhouse." Wood and Stewart wrote most of the material, and it is here that Stewart's songwriting voice (his humor especially) is first evident (check "Spanish Boots"). But I've reviewed this brutal classic elsewhere, which brings me to the point: get the UK remaster, available since 2003, on EMI. Not only is the remastering more detailed and alive (as it is on the EMI edition of "Truth"), but it includes four previously unissued bonus tracks that will delight fans of this brilliant but short-lived all star band. (Why Sony's Legacy division did not get to reissue these two seminal albums is beyond me). So if you're thinking about "Beck-Ola" on CD, click over to the EMI import edition. When you hear the solo on "Sweet Little Angel," you'll thank me.
Beck-Ola.......2004-12-23
Bock-Ola is the second album by the legendary Jeff Beck Group. There were a couple lineups later in Jeff Becks carear but none of them were nearly as good as the original. On the bands first album Truth we were introduced to the legendary Rod Stewart and Ron Wood, both of which went on to be very sucessful. The bands first album was a land mark in rock and blues music. Beck-Ola wasnt as popular, and it wasnt as good either. For this album they brought on the Rolling Stones un-official keyboard player Nicky Hopkins, which gave the album a nice touch. Beck-Ola was the bands most experimental album and most diverse. Renging from covers of old Elvis Presly songs like 'All Shook Up' and 'Jailhouse Rock' which they pull off decently to a crazy off the wall jazzy fusion song called 'Plynth (Water Down The Drain)'
The album starts off with the bands cover of Elvis' 'All Shook Up' which they pull off decently but it is in no way in compareson to the original. Jeff Beck Plays excelent leads and a killer slide on this track though. Next we slide right into 'Spanish Boots' which is very bluesy and shows a fiery Jeff Beck playing a out of this world solo. Rod Stewart gives his best vocal performance on this song, well for this album anyways. Ron Woods bass playing is the most promanant on this track as well and its aparent that he knew what he was doing. 'Girl From Mill Valley' is a slow piano driven song, its really pretty but doesnt fit well on this album, but still good. Next the band rocks a distorted cover of 'Jailhouse Rock' which I do like because of the fantastic guitar work by Beck. Rod's vocals are distorted on this track and it sounds really cool, deffinetley a good cover but it doesnt hold a candle to the original. Next is that crazy jazzy/bluesy/sometimes rock track 'Plynth (Water Down The Drain)' I really like this song, it's my favorite on the album and its one of my all time favorite songs actually, because it shows many sides of Beck that we would see in years to come and it also contains some of his very best guitar work to date! 'Hangmans Knee' is a slower bluesy song wear Rod really shines, and it has one of the coolest guitar riffs ever created, truly a great song. The album then closes with the oddly titled 'Rice Pudding' and thought it may sound like a crazy song it really is, the percusion an ddrums are out of this world and Jeff Beck's guitar playng once again is the focal point of the song, this is the perfect track to close the album.
So while this may not be as good as Truth was it is still a very goo solid album, this is deffinetley the most adventures of the two albums. I highly recomend picking up both albums Truth and Beck-Ola if you are a fan of Jeff Becks guitar playing. I also recomend picking the two albums up if you are a fan of Rod Stewart because he never sounded better.
In-your-face rock and roll.......2004-01-08
When this came out onto the record shelves a long, long time ago I couldn't wait to hear what Jeff Beck had been working on since the impressive Truth lp. What I heard was no less impressive to me than what the Who and Cream were putting out at the time. This is landmark stuff, kids. Every track is inspired and balls to the wall. Remember that this was way before groups like Led Zep and AC/DC started cranking it up. And Jeff's mastery of his instrument is so very evident here. He was so far ahead of his time. Too bad his later lps with the revamped Jeff Beck Group were so tame and pop-oriented. Just be glad this fiery band is preserved for all time on this album. Unforgettable.
Not As Good As "Truth", But Still Great.......2004-01-03
This was the second and final album from the original Jeff Beck Group. Their debut album, TRUTH, was a masterpiece and one of the greatest blues/rock albums ever created. This, their second release, isn't nearly as stunning, but still has it's excellent moments.
The two Elvis covers are good, especially the smoking "Jailhouse Rock", played with an energy that must be heard to be believed. Hopkins delivers some fantastic piano here, too. "All Shook Up" is less interesting, but it was never a great song in the first place. The only real disappointment on here is Hopkins' boring piano instrumental "Girl From Mill Valley". He really was one of the most gifted pianists of all time; but here, he doesn't show it (if you wanna hear him REALLY wail on the piano, listen to "Blues Deluxe" from TRUTH).
"Spanish Boots" is a wonderful tune with an irresistible groove and, as usual, scorching playing from Beck. "Plynth (Water Down The Drain)" and "Hangman's Knee" are even better, and both are heavily riff-based, devastating rockers. And the closing guitar instrumental "Rice Pudding" really shouldn't be seven minutes long in my opinion. Some parts of it are good, but some parts are kind of boring, too.
All in all, this is definitely not Jeff Beck at his best. To hear that, get TRUTH and prepare to be blown away.
Good in places, but not a patch on Truth or the Faces 1st LP.......2003-11-13
This album is dissapointing in a big way. Its heavy handed approach is downright messy and confused.
The First album is a near masterpiece, but this doesnt compare. I had hoped that there would have been some extra tracks, or maybe a live recording too.
Try the Faces First Step LP for a better bit of Rod Stewart, and try Truth for a better Jeff Beck album. The 3rd and 4th albums are, in parts, much better than this. In fact Beck Bogert and Appice's albums high points are better than some of this. What a shame that there were no extras on this reissue.
To be honest the Elvis covers are cheesey and the album lacks a consistent 'groove'.
The band sound like they'd run out of ideas by now.
I wish Rod and Jeff and Ron (and the rest of the excellent band members) had stayed together a bit longer, but if they'd done anything else like this then I'd have been surprised.
Plynth goes someway to redeeming the album, Stewart is in top form and Jeffs Guitar Rips!
2and a half stars.

This is real blow-out-the-speakers music! If your neighbors don't complain about you already, after you get this they will for sure. Tremendous lineup, Jeff Beck (Yardbirds alum), Rod Stewart (Faces), Ron Wood (also Faces), Nick Hopkins (various '70's bands including Faces), and hey, you get to hear Stewart sing a cover of Ol' Man River with Beck on bass. I still have my vinyl from 25 years ago and wouldn't give it up for all the oil in Iraq.
Import ye!.......2002-02-07
If you've never heard the Rod Stewart-era Jeff Beck Group, then you're missing a major piece of rock history. It was this group, and not Led Zeppelin, that pioneered the heavy blues that would evolve into heavy metal ("Truth" was released in '68, "Led Zeppelin I" in '69). Several of these tracks even out-Zep the mighty Zep. The blues covers are better than Zep's, and if you were to imagine Led Zep playing every track with the looseness that they do on "Rock'n'Roll", you have a good idea of what the Jeff Beck Group sounds like. Beck's guitar on "You Shook Me" is not to be missed. Of the two, "Truth" is a much better album than "Beck-Ola", which is bogged down by some less than stellar material. However, the two Elvis covers on "Beck-Ola" are ace.
TWO MASTERPIECES ON ONE CD.......2001-03-01
When I first bought Truth and then Beck-Ola, I couldn't believe how inventive this music was. I always thought Jeff Beck was every bit as creative as Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. And when you add the extraordinary vocals by Rod Stewart you have great music. The music has a very live quality to it even though it was all made in the studio ( except Blues DeLuxe). I suppose that these albums eventually got the credit that they deserved. I can't believe that I am the first one to write a review on them though. Ron Wood plays some incredible 6 string bass also. Jeff Beck eventually went on to become a master fusion solo guitarist superstar ala John McLaughlin. And of course everyone knows how popular of a vocalist Rod Stewart became. Ron Wood went on to record with Rod on his first solo effert, "Gasoline Alley" followed by "Every Picture Tells a Story", which was a masterpiece, and then became the featured guitarist for the Rolling Stones. I must say that this group certainly lead the way with these two great albums. It amazes me that you can purchase both albums on one Cd for such a cheap price. BUY THIS CD!!

One of the hallmarks of Jeff Beck's mercurial career has been a propensity to zig just when you expect him to zag. While Beck-Ola, the Jeff Beck Group's second album, may not have lived up to the heady expectations fueled by their first album, Truth, it's hardly a failure. Personal frictions (singer Rod Stewart and bassist Ron Wood left to join the Faces just after the album was released, also nixing a prime showcase at Woodstock) likely broke up the original JBG well before they'd hit their stride. Perhaps influenced by the early success of the similarly formatted, if much heavier-handed, Led Zeppelin, the group seems to have a narrower focus on Beck-Ola, with more emphasis on straight-ahead rock like "Spanish Boots," "Plynth (Water Down the Drain)," "All Shook Up," and a standout, typically inventive Beck reworking of Elvis Presley's "Jailhouse Rock." The Bard had it right about those sad words: "What could have been." --Jerry McCulley

Beck-Ola.......2005-09-27
So while this may not be as good as Truth was it is still a very good solid album, this is deffinetley the most adventures of the two albums. I highly recomend picking up both albums Truth and Beck-Ola if you are a fan of Jeff Becks guitar playing. I also recomend picking the two albums up if you are a fan of Rod Stewart because he never sounded better.
a one - two punch.......2000-04-30
I do prefer "Truth" but I will recommend Beck-ola based on the fact that this is as good as it could be.It had a lot to live up to.I just think they could've done better.
The truth is..It's better than "Truth".......1999-12-13
Stewart was cool...Wood is a bass god...Hopkins does what he does best..Beck was ahead of his time by 100 years and "Rice Pudding" ends way too soon.
Less eclectic than "Truth", more focused and raucous.......1999-12-01
A couple of things could have happened with respect to "Beck-ola". Either the friction in the band limited the album's pallette, so to speak, or else the band decided to focus on rock and heavy blues/R&B. Whatever the case, you will not need caffeine to be re-energized after hearing this CD. Beck's guitar work is remarkably subtle and understated, as we have come to expect, notwithstanding the relentless rhythm section which pounds and slashes behind him. Plynth and Rice Pudding are two stand outs (what happened to the end of Rice Pudding? The song literally falls off the table), Spanish Boots is great; Stewart/Wood/Beck showing some good lyrical humor as well as good songwriting. Wood's bass work on this song, and indeed on this entire album, is outstanding. It makes one think that the Stones hired him for the wrong job. Rod Stewart's vocal apprenticeship ends with this album. His signature vocal style has pretty much evolved at this point, and the rest is legend. 4 stars only because the album does not fully live up to the promise of its predecessor, but is still well worth the investment.
Jeff takes his place as one of the greatest guitarists ever!.......1999-03-10
As a guitarist, I can say that Jeff Beck is one of the greats. The guitar playing on this album is amazing, and as always, Jeff is years ahead of his time.
