Cyclorama [Enhanced]

Cyclorama is an unexpectedly appealing comeback. Sure, theres still no shortage of excessively filigreed keyboard and guitar passages, anthemic choruses that make Queen sound laid back, and at least one song (the nearly seven-minute "These Are the Times") that threatens to summon the spirit of Stonehenge-era Spinal Tap. Yet, somehow, all that is forgiven once Styx sneaks up on you with the killer hooks of the Tenacious D-assisted "Kiss Your Ass Goodbye," a power-pop gem with the verve of classic Cheap Trick. Its these and other small pleasures--Brian Wilsons sumptuous vocal arrangement on a reprise of "Fooling Yourself (Palm of Your Hands)," Billy Bob Thorntons guttural yowling on "Bourgeois Pig," and of course an appearance by John Waite (without whom no classic-rock party is complete)--that weaken your resistance to even the maudlin sentiments of "Yes I Can" (which, sorry to say, has nothing to do with the Sammy Davis Jr. autobiography whose title it shares). Will Cyclorama inspire a revisionist respect for the band at its commercial peak? Probably not. But it does prove that Styx have more than enough musical vitality to transcend their peers on the casino and county fair circuit. --Bill Forman

The emotion, the passion is gone..........2007-06-09
Who can forget ballads like "The Best of Times", "Don't Let it End", "Come Sail Away" etc. I liked all the Styx band members and I still do, but the real nemises behind the band, we must concede, is Dennis DeYoung. And without him, this band is not writing the same type of material. Even the more straight ahead rock stuff done by Tommy Shaw and James Young, like "Too Much Time..." and "Snowblind" were given a special contribution by Dennis's presence. I don't like to single out one band member and I know that it wasn't all his choice to leave the band (he has chronic fatigue syndrome), but Styx is very raw and generic without him. That touching sentiment that Dennis brings is conspicuously absent now in exchange for Shaw and James Young left to their own devices with Larry Gowan, who is also a pretty raw, "rough and ready" type of songwriter. The only songs that he ever did that really had that type of passion I'm speaking of were "You're a Strange Animal" and "Moonlight Desires", but he's not doing stuff like that now and hasn't for quite some time. This CD, while it has a few moments reminiscent of Styx, sounds more like a release from the "Damn Yankees".
Change of musicians........2006-12-15
Gave this three (3) stars because I do like STYX. This album has maybe 1 or 2 songs on it that are worth the purchase and that is all. I do miss the wonderous voice of Dennis DeYoung with this band.
"But We'll Try Best As We Can To Caaarrrrrry OOOnnn".......2006-09-25
No offense to any Styx fan out there this is a great CD. Lawrence Gowan is no Dennis DeYoung and that is a fact. But also to those styx fans who don't like the new Styx because Dennis isn't in it anymore let me explain to why. Dennis DeYpung has Chronic fatigue Syndrome and that is aggravated by bright lights. He bowed out of the Brave New World tour and was replaced with Lawrence Gowan. And it is my belief that if you aren't healthy enough to play concerts live than you shouldn't be aloud to make studio albums either.
Anyway this is a great CD. Perfect to continue your Styx collection with some really good songs on here are "One With Everything", "Do Things My Way", and "These Are The Times" they make it worth buy it so give it a try sure its not the same without DDY but in the words of him "But Will Try Best As We Can To Carry On".
AWESOME.......2006-08-02
IF ANY OF YOU ARE A TRUE! STYX FAN THAN YOU WOULD LIKE ALL THEIR ALBUMS!! THIS ONE IS CERTAINLY A GOOD ONE TOO!
4.5 stars for Cyclorama.......2006-05-15
Styx hasn't sounded this retro good since retro was the present in 1975-1976. Seriously, if you don't understand or comprehend that this album is a successful return to Styx-past, you never got it and probably never will. And they did it WITHOUT Dennis DeYoung ta boot.
Kudos, Styx. I've enjoyed this album for three years running. It's fun, it's well-written...and it shows your roots.
Forget the cynical reviews here. If you even only moderately like Styx, get this record.

Album Description
A unique instrumental combination of smooth jazz, new age, and progressive rock, with nods to classical and celtic just for fun. This album features guitar on most songs, backed by an arsenal of drums and percussion, keyboards, bass, and rhythm guitar.
Well thought out song forms and a variety of tempos and feels make for an interesting album throughout. Not just looped grooves under a 4 minute solo, the drum parts were carefully crafted to create a unique feel for each song. Likewise, the guitar parts were conceived with an emphasis on originality, feel and taste, and not on flash (although some may have leaked in anyway!). Need a more concrete reference - think of Eric Johnson's instrumentals with a more orchestrated rhythm section. Great for driving, studying, relaxing, or as background music.

Soft Jazz Makes a Statement.......2004-04-30
I own a copy of the Amelia CD. Trent Antony and Wayne McGraw are putting forth some good music here. What makes it stand out is the blending of soft jazz with pop/rock progressions. It is original music that will capture your attention for sure. Just imagine putting on a jazz CD, but what comes out is something colored with touches of Eric Claption, rock guitar, and a drummer not afraid to write drum scores with feel and originality. There are a few songs that are like movie soundtracks or marching bands! My favorite is This Way East and the haunting Amelia. Good buy. Support this group.
