The worst thing about this cd is that the women who play the bowls, decided they could write music and sing. So what we end up with are half the tracks ruined by this annoying repetitive "melody" - pretty much the same one, over and over - and vocalizations taht are more annoying than relaxing or uplifting.

There are two good tracks here, track 4, which is almost 16 minutes, and is pure bowls with a running stream sound which is very relaxing. Then there is track 1, which is pure bowls. But Track 2 is not music at all but rather one of the women talking about the bowls. Then, track 3 is a guided meditation. Way too much talking and not enough singing bowls. As a meditation it's okay, I guess, but there are better cd's for guided meditations if that's what you're after. The rest of the tracks are marred by the crappy vocalizations.

On a positive note, I have one of the Crystal Voices other cd's, "Sounds of Light", which is excellent - all bowls, no singing, and no talking.

WARNING: If you are expecting nice bell or chime sounds, like wind chimes, you may not like this. The crystal bowls create a deep resonating sound, sort of a cross between a buzz and a hum with overtones of the sound going on for a long time, where you may see it as a background "noise". Some people are not going to like this. For me it can be annoying at times, but most of the time I find it relaxing. I do believe there is something scientifically relaxing and spiritual about these sounds and I would like to see some research being done on the effects of these sounds, and Tibetan Bowls sounds as well.

Bottom line: Buy "Sounds of Light" instead.

I would give it a 10 starts if I can! I suffered from tremendous anxiety and insomnia for months and when I listen to this CD for the first time, it helped me quiet down the noises in my head to tranquility. I'm glad that a Reverend in my Church of Religeous Science played this CD at a mid-week service meditation. A gem!

5 out of 5 stars MY FAVORITE CHAKRA MEDITATION!.......2004-08-06

OK I am writing to set the record straight here. The reviewer who wrote saying this CD does not focus on crystal bowls is leading you astray. This Crystal Voices CD is entirely composed of crystal bowl tones - every track has them. There is an incredible Chakra Meditation that guides the listener from the root chakra up to the crown while playing the chakra-tuned crystal bowl appropriate to each energy center. A lovely, soothing voice offers minimal prompts at the beginning of each chakra so that you know when to shift your focus to the next centre. It is not distracting in the least, very helpful and the voice has a clarity to it that really helps me stay focused. Then you are left to work with the solo sounds of the crystal bowl for that chakra before preceeding to the next one. This meditation is about 16 minutes and there are no voice chants on it! It provides an extremely effective tune-up for your energy system and I like it because it doesn't take too long - who can't find 16 minutes? Next there is Sanctuary, another 16 minute track with absolutely nothing but beautiful, melodic crystal bowls, windchimes and the gentle sounds of a mountain brook in the background. Between those two tracks you have over 30 minutes without any voice chants. There are three other tracks on the CD totalling about 15 minutes that are a combination of crystal bowls with soft, vocal toning in the background. Not chants as in words, just melodic tones which I find very angelic.

Everyone I have ever played this CD loves it, so if you are looking for a crystal healing CD with an excellent guided meditation, calm your mind, you HAVE found it! If you are looking for a crystal bowl CD that has only crystal bowl sounds and no meditation, then try Chords of the Cosmos or Sounds of Light, both most highly recommended.

I had thought I was buying a CD focusing on Crystal Singing Bowls. Not true. This is mostly a cd of voice chants. The Sanctuary song, which is the ONLY song without voice on the whole CD is truly wonderful. And I may be glad I bought this CD if only for that song. The others could be good, if there were some break or variation in the chanting from time to time. But I started feeling like I was subject to a new type of Chinese water torture. The longer the songs went on, the more aggravated and stressed out I got. I will listen to Sanctuary over and over, but once more than was enough for Angel Mantrum.

As someone who is very new to meditation, I first started doing some research on the internet. It led me to this CD of the Crystal Bowls. At first when I listened to the meditation and guided meditation I was not sure anything was working right (I sort of expected to float out of my chair or something like that). But I stuck with it and started to notice my body was in fact responding and giving me clues along the way. After the third time I did the guided mediataion, at the end I felt my body melt together, a feeling of being just one entity with deep relaxation. I moved on to the chant and stream tracs and found myself enchanted and floating along. It was great, but if your new like me give it a little time. You dont know what to expect or how you will respond. I feel terrific and use this CD almost every day now.

I bought this album couple month ago but come across in again and decide to live the feedback.
Yes, this music journey brought total excitement to my ears. This is not just "trancy, ambient" electronic tunes mixed in 5.1, this is serious art of Music and Sound.

(In response to previous review about "Dark Side of the Moon" SACD -Interestingly, the original engineer, Alan Parsons, asked to be involved in this 30th Anniversary Edition project, but was shut out. It would seem that future listeners suffer as a result. Many Listeners concerned that sound of the release is too compressed and could be done match better.)

I like almost all music!!!!!! that being said this was the exception, the surround maping is good but the overall quality of the music was imho very weak I was looking for a very trancy ,ambiant experience, I have a hard time even classifying this as music! I have not listened to jeros other releases but I hope they have a little more cohesiveness implemented. if your looking (as I was) for something to rock your surround system check out bt this binary universe or pink floyd dark side of the moon hybrid sacd!!!!!! or maybe jeros classical releases

    I bought this CD a week ago and have been listening to it non-stop since. Nobody combines electronic music with didgeridoos, sitars, and ethereal vocals like these guys. Each song builds to it's particular frequency- and so does the album. Each track gets progessively more beat-driven and the effect is awesome. With the exception of a couple chill-out tracks, by the end of the CD you'll feel like a tribal warrior dancing on the eve of your greatest conquest. Ok that might be a little over the top. I'm not a "flying person" like the producer says but I got pretty close flying down the freeway at around 100mph listening to this CD. ... Seriouly- if you like Thievery Corporation, Kruder and Dorfmeister, Govinda, etc.- you'll dig this. Give it a listen.

      This album by Ken Keating is exceptional in many, many ways. First of all, his glorious voice, which goes from a masculine baritone to that of an Irish tenor, without effort, or ever changing his vibrato or tone. Some will like comparisons, but I feel that is unfair to Mr. Keating. Just click on any track and listen. You can draw your own conclusions.

      "I Believe in You and Me" seems to be the focus track of this CD. It's delivery, words and music are flawless and will draw you back for many listenings. It should really be placed in a current film, as the "love theme", as it would make any film better by its presence.

      "For You" is a song that any man or woman should learn, and sing to the one that they love. You will be guaranteed a night of bliss. Take my word!

      "How Do You Keep the Music Playing?" is a true vocal achievement. Unfortunately the music arrangement sometimes overshadows Mr. Keating's tremendous vocals. This can be easily rectified by a few clicks on a modern amplifier, however.

      "I'll Forget You" completely takes over as the next track. It envelops you, with it's tremendous saxophone solo, and takes you into a smoke-filled nightclub. You seem to see Bogart and Bacall through his vocal, making this one of the truly great tracks on the album.

      "One True Friend" brings the masculine, sexy vocals of Mr. Keating full front, and he hurdles the many key changes with incredible ease. In fact, the listener is totally unaware of the vocal challenges he faces, which is as it should be. The listener should be swept away by the voice, and never notice technical vocals at all.

      "Just One Lifetime" again has intricate key changes, handled deftly by Mr. Keating. His vibrato never changes, even when singing octave jumps. How I long to hear him sing this live, and in person.

      "We Can Be Kind" is another standout, which has to be heard several times to really appreciate its beauty. Like potato chips, I dare you to listen to it just once.

      "Smile" is the closing number. Beautiful -- but I would have preferred it with just a piano, and the closing to go to the high notes that Mr. Keating does so incredibly well.

      The entire album is not only beautifully sung, but FELT as well. Every note comes from his heart -- not just sung -- and that makes this a true find. It is incredibly rare for me to find a male singer who puts his heart and soul into a vocal, let alone an entire CD.

      I hope and pray that the next release will be a live album, with a few songs with only a piano. Ken Keating is the kind of vocalist we need today. Not one made out of a cookie-cutter to fit some kind of mold. Rather a tried and true, real talent, who puts his heart into every note that he sings.

      A great CD, Once in a Lifetime, will put you in a mood above all others. It will lift your spirits about love, caring, sharing. I bought it and it is great relaxing music for the soul.

      Ken Keating's debut album is without a doubt one of the best of 2005! I fell in love with his voice the moment I heard it. It would be impossible for me to choose a favorite song on this album because they are all equally wonderful in their own unique ways. I would highly recommend this album to everyone! These songs will touch your soul and warm your heart!

      Integrating of different music genres seems to be the domain of remixers and electronic artists these days, but not always. New York-based oud player and singer Yoel Ben-Simhon and his group eschew the turntables and postproduction knob-twisting in favor of acoustic small-group instrumentation. A Jew of Moroccan descent, Ben-Simhon uses the Sephardic music tradition (which fuses Jewish and Arabic styles) as a base for composing his own songs; at the same time, he also seamlessly incorporates elements of the entire Mediterranean Diaspora as well as a little jazz. Highlights include the voice-driven "Forgiveness Hymns," a Ben-Simhon original that uses a traditional Moroccan hymn as the refrain. Featuring violin, viola, and cello as well as Ben-Simhon's oud, the elegant "Eastern Winds" goes off in a different direction as it combines Western classical music and Arabic rhythms into a remarkably seamless whole. The leader is well-supported throughout by the Sultana Ensemble, but there is no doubt that Ben-Simhon is a newcomer to watch. --Tad Hendrickson

      Album Description

      As a child, composer/instrumentalist Yoel Ben-Simhon was immersed in the Moroccan-Jewish culture of his parents and grandparents, who emigrated to Israel in the late 1950s: "My grandmother Sultana was always my babysitter. At her house, I was exposed to my family's Moroccan and Arabic heritage. It was in the language they spoke, the tobacco my grandfather Mimon sniffed, the food they ate, and the music they picked up via short wave radio from Morocco. We went to a Moroccan synagogue, and I heard the music there, too; both liturgical hymns and secular songs." With the musicians and dancers of the Sultana Ensemble, Ben-Simhon blends the sights and sounds of his childhood in Israel with those of his adulthood, spent as a working musician in the United States. The resulting project is as personal in conception as it is global in scope, mixing elements of Moroccan, Andalusian, Sephardic, and Middle Eastern music and dance with Latin jazz.

      I bought this CD after watching a live show of the Sultana Ensamble and Yoel Ben Simhon. The live preformance was amazing and I was pleasently surprised to feel that the CD captured the livelihood of a live show within a very high quality studio recording.
      The music is an exciting mix of different elements - Morroccan, Jewish, Spanish, Classical. Yoel's voice is tender and sweet. The instruments add a wonderful variety.

      In days when East and West are approaching what seems to be an inevitable clash, Yoel Ben-Simhon's CD represents an amazing alternative of what our world could have looked like if tolerance and creation weren't underrated. Ben-Simhon and his affluent ensemble were able to intertwine Moroccan-influenced music, ancient prayers, and jazz, into a harmonic and sensitive composition. The result is intriguing and exciting, making each listening to the CD a new experience. Highly recommended!

      Yoel Ben-Simhon conceived of this music and of the Sultana Ensemble as a way of preserving various Middle Eastern musical traditions, connecting those traditions to Western musical styles (e.g. jazz), and promoting a musical dialogue between Arabs and Jews. That is admirable enough, but he and his accomplished bandmates have also crafted a terrific album, full of energy and emotion, mystical power and beauty. Beyond easy categorization, very accessible, and highly recommended.
