For those of us who grew up in the '70s, this drive-in compilation of '50s and '60s rock and doo-wop, complete with Wolfman Jack introductions, was our introduction to this music. There are 41 jukebox hits here, and every one of them is a classic of its time (although two tracks--"At the Hop" and "She's so Fine" are covers by the revival band Flash Cadillac & the Continental Kids). In his 1973 movie, director George Lucas used the music (and the presence of mysterious deejay Wolfman) as the AM-radio soundtrack to one night in suburban California, 1962. The idea was to capture and sustain an end-of-summer, end-of-innocence mood that's in the air throughout the picture-- not as a shortcut to establishing a period (as in Robert Zemeckis'Forrest Gump). There's an awful lot of spontaneous energy in these tunes--from Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly, to the Platters and the Clovers and the Del-Vikings, to the Crests and the Beach Boys--and also just a hint of melancholy that goes down very nicely with a burger, shake, and fries. --Jim Emerson
Customer Reviews:
Music of an Entire Era.......2007-05-03
I loved the movie and I love the soundtrack. It's amazing to hear so many great songs and bands of the past all together at once.
The soundtrack truly embodies an entire era of music, the mood and feel of which anyone who listens can feel. You are drawn into it by listening and just plain feel good during it, the songs are some of the most remembered and loved of all time.
This movie started or at least kept alive that trend of letting music be another character and being a significant part of the story. George Lucas, i and I'm sure everyone else believe, accomplished his goal. To make a movie that dealt with, among other things, coming of age; and to let music be a huge part of that story. You wouldn't have American Graffiti without all of these great songs of the olden days. They made that movie great.
Gets the Party Going !.......2007-04-23
Great fun in this collection of great Classic songs.
Getting right to the point, this CD is an essential addition to any music lover's collection.
Buy it and get the party mood going ! :)

For better or worse, John Williams has completely reshaped the art of the soundtrack. His scores for Star Wars, E.T., and Jaws are simply unforgettable, and his knack for tugging at our heartstrings is uncanny. John Williams: Greatest Hits 1969-1999 collects 30 years of the composer's best-loved themes into one double-CD package. You'll find all the soundtrack moments you'd expect from Indiana Jones, Close Encounters, and Schindler's List, along with a few surprises (The Reivers Americana-filled main theme and Williams's 1984 Olympic theme, for starters). Most of the earlier works have been digitally rerecorded by Williams, so while you may not get the original recording of these works here, nothing shows its age. And although we really do get only his "greatest hits" (the longest track is the nearly 10-minute-long Close Encounters theme), most of these soundtracks can be purchased in their entirety for the true aficionado. John Williams may be an acquired taste, but this set proves why--year after year--he scores some of the most successful films Hollywood can produce. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
An excellent survey of this great film composer's music.......2007-06-15
John Willams' film music is of such high quality it still holds up away from its source material.
Williams not only has the talent to write memorable melodies but to expertly interpolate themes from the story into his scores, for example the drum rolls in "JFK" evoking the president's funeral procession and the mournful bugle calls in "Born on the Fourth of July".
Williams also employs a variety of styles, but never gratuitously, always to the service of the film. His "Jaws" theme is as legendary as the violin shrieks from Bernard Herrman's famous score for "Psycho".
The performances are excellent - only the "Born on the Fourth of July" performance exposes some thinness in the string section of the Boston Pops Orchestra.
There is much to enjoy here for film and music lovers alike.
It's my second copy!.......2007-03-09
This is by far the best driving music! Especially on those long desert roads.Adventure lies ahead for you when the Indiana Jones soundtrack is blasting from the dashboard of the car. Kids Love this CD Buy it now!

It's wonderfull, even my teenagers listen to it! I think we have played Jurassic Park and Hook 100 times.
Good music collection - very inspirational.......2007-01-22
I use the music on this CD as background when I give awards during track. It's very inspirational & uplifting to the athletes. They love it.
very enjoyable.......2007-01-16
This was an excellent collection and my teen requested it but we all enjoy the themes. It is fun to know how many you actually can guess just from familiarity. I recommend it for John Williams fans.

Doo Wop!.......2007-05-24
Doo Wop at its best. Great voices. First two songs are hallmarks of an era.
Big Hit.......2007-05-14
This is the best of the Skyliners. If you are into doo wop and old music from the 50's and 60's, this is one for your car CD player! We have a 34 Ford 5 window coupe, and we play this while we're driving.
Great.......2007-03-09
According to my friends and myself, I'm the acknowledged "King Of The Dusties". Therefore, this kind of music is the best of the best. Some of the songs I bought during my teen years and I appreciate music like this even more after I hear what is on the air these. That, and the fact that I'm a former musician/singer, this fits my style!
SIMPLY ELEGANT.......2006-05-27
DON'T ORDER THIS RECORD BECAUSE SINCE I DONT HAVE YOU AND THIS I SWEAR ARE ON HERE. THOSE ARE ON ALL KINDS OF COMPILATIONS AND THE RADIO EVERY DAY.ITS ALL THOSE OTHER GREAT SONGS THAT YOU DONT HEAR ON THE OLDIES THAT ARE THE REAL TREAT OF THIS CD. ITS UNBELIEVABLE HOW GOOD THEY ARE, ITS HARD TO PICK ONLY ONE FAVORITE BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL GREAT ARRANGEMENTS OF FANTASTIC SONGS BOTH THEIR ORIGINALS AND COVERS. JUST LISTEN TO I'LL BE SEEING YOU, BELIEVE ME, LONELY WAY, HOW MUCH, WARM, IF I CAN DREAM CANT I, WHEN I FALL IN LOVE, AND STARDUST. A CD JUST DOES NOT GET ANY BETTER THAN THAT. BUY IT YOU WONT BE SORRY.
CLASS ACT IF EVER THERE WAS ONE........2005-03-10
Doo Wop, with its emphasis on voice as musical instrument, represents one of the most beautiful genres ever. The Skyliners exude so much feeling delivered with almost cocky confidence it's amazing. Too many white singers seem to confuse soulful singing with trying to sound black (Michael Bolton;Michael Mcdonald)and come off sounding strained. This group's soulful sound comes off its superior talent, honesty, inocence, and unapologetic white sound. Every song on this disc is a treat. By the way, I'm a black classic soul music freak.

the most sensetive music ever.......2005-10-26
This music take me away from every day troubles and brings my soul to a beutiful world of music.Saint-Saent's vision of music is different, his creations are sensitive and intence. He is agreat talent.
Cool Camille.......2003-03-06
I think that the sound of Saint Saens Music is very unique. I think that anyone out there wanting to listen to some excellent writing I assure you that Saint Saens has written it. On behalf of Amazon I would definitely rate this music 5 stars. I thank Amazon for a perfect portrayal of his works. You shoppers out there might want to take a look at buying this.

Astounding!!!.......2000-10-06
I have come accross very few CD's that have 74 minutes of music that I enjoy. This CD is one of those. Mason Jones does a great job on Morceau, everyone likes danse bachannalle, the piano concerto is great, it's just a really enjoyable CD to own. I recommend it highly, it's one of my favorites.
Great Selections, So-So Collection.......2000-06-23
As all good elementary school music teachers know, Saint-Saëns could evoke emotions from a rock. I don't know if it's his masterful command (or creation) of the idioms of music, or whether it's the formal structure of his compositions, but there's never any confusion about how one feels when listening to this Apollo.
This Sony recording supposedly collects his best. It does and it doesn't. The "Danse Macabre"--a perennial Saint Saëns fave--is definitely better than any others on the market--crisper, livelier, and ... er... creepier. And the Bacchanale is also superbly done. (Don't take my word for it though--you can compare these yourself from the various samples.) But as great as these individual pieces are, Sony failed to bring to the "Swan" the rest of the zoo from "Carnivale des Animaux," and, worse, they forgot the "Aquarium," too! Plus, the "Organ Symphony" *must* be heard in its entirety to sound like the serious piece of music that it is.
I haven't found the noumenal Saint-Saëns collection yet. But this one surely isn't phenomenal.
Classical is the best.......2000-06-22
It's composition very good. Thanks Sony for this great album.

Selection of Songs?.......2006-07-02
Perlman is a man of extraordinary clarity and tonality also one of my favorite violinists. After I finish practicing a piece I usually find a recording to listen to different interpretations. Most of them are by Perlman and Heifetz. Unfortunately this album has some obscure songs and the songs itself do not do justice to Perlman what some other songs may have done. Still it is important to broaden the scope, so I would recommend this to all music connoisseurs :). btw i'm only 16 so...don't take this review too literal huh?
If you are a violin lover, buy it.......2003-01-19
It's beautiful. Simply put.
This is "THE" Greatest Hits alum by Perlman.......2000-12-03
Perlam is already a great player like the whole world knows. But the music selection couldn't better! I espacily like the piano accomplimant. Perlman pays the pieces with true style. The working realtionship between Perlman and the Pianist is truly incredible. Before geting any of Perlman's other greatest hits albums, get this one!
This is a relaxing, however, somewhat disjointed collection........1998-11-12
This collection of familiar tunes will provide a relaxing hour with one of the world's premier violinists. However, the combination of "The Old Folks at Home" and "Motto perpetuo" is somewhat difficult to assimilate. At any rate, Perlman is a listener's joy!

For those who want the most remembered passages of classical music's best-loved works, here's a package for you. On this bargain priced double-CD, you'll find music from 40 different classical composers; for the most part, the recordings excerpted here are some of the very best. Of course, you only get one Bach sampling (Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, played by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra) and one Mozart (A Little Night Music conducted by Herbert von Karajan), but this is still a nice collection--perhaps the starting point for a budding collection of classical music. This set's downfall? Unfortunately, though the liner notes discuss the evolution of classical music chronologically, the tracks are programmed in alphabetical order by composer's last name. This makes for some startling transitions! Emil Gilels's reflective performance of the Adagio from Beethoven's "Moonlight" sonata is followed by the crashing cymbals and bombast of Carmen's "March of the Toreadors," a recipe for a heart attack if there ever was one. Still, there's something here for everyone and the liner notes even explain what movies this music can be found in. A nice touch. --Jason Verlinde

Waste of money.......2006-01-12
Watch out for the volume leveling mentioned in another review. Surely the compliers could have come up with a better sort order than by composer. The change in tempo/volume between pieces makes it impossible to enjoy. My two CD's ended up in the trash.

Great Music Compilation.......2005-08-15
This is a great CD full of many songs that you will recognize and enjoy. If you are someone who likes classical music but doesn't necessarily know which songs or which composers you like, then this CD is for you. You will likely recognize many of the songs as the classical songs you would have picked out to be your favorites.
If you like classical music don't buy this CD........2005-03-11
Most of the tracks were chopped down to 3-4 minutes so some of the best parts of the compositions are missing. I don't know what I was thinking trying to buy 40 classical songs on two CD's. If you really want to enjoy the music you would do better to purchase a CD with fewer, but better quality tracks.
A must for anyone wanting the staples of classical music.......2005-02-23
In my years of experience teaching Fine Arts to high school students, I know that the majority, if not all, of the music included on this album is commonly used in collge music appreciation courses. This is an excellent sample of truly all the "greatest hits" of classical music. My students enjoy listening to the music and have later told me when take their required music apreciation courses in college that they "already know it all" because of this CD! The recordings are clear, the selections are passionate, and the listener will gain a familiarity with all of the most commonly heard classical music used in tv commercials, movies, etc.
I recommend this album, along with the boxed set, "Age of the Classics" for anyone who is interested in becoming familiar with the most famous staples of classical music.
A great compilation.......2005-02-09
This cd somes up some of the greatest pieces of instrumental (and is some cases choral) music ever written. It is a great starter for a beginning classical music lover or a quick and easy all-in-one for those of us who study classical music for a living. I highly recommend this cd to anyone who wants to love or already does love classical music.

The critical debate over Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical legacy will no doubt rage for decades. Is he the shrewd populist composer who almost single-handedly revived the moribund stage musical--or a crass, Barnum-esque showman (who almost single-handedly revived the moribund stage musical)? This 18-track anthology chronicles the high points of Sir Andrew's enduring songcraft and the irrefutable impact it's made across a remarkably disparate swath of tastes and genres, from Broadway to Top 40 radio and even the classical repertoire.
If some have accused Lloyd Webber's songs--like "The Music of the Night" (from Phantom of the Opera) and the title tune from Whistle Down the Wind, included here--of having all the melodic and lyrical sophistication of a children's lullaby, that's likely the very element that's made them so appealing to a mass audience. If nothing else, it's a compelling argument for that old notion about it being "the singer, not the song." Indeed, there are few contemporary composers whose music could entice divas from Streisand ("As If We'd Never Said Goodbye" from Sunset Blvd.) to Madonna (Evita's "You Must Love Me") and Charlotte Church ("Pie Jesu" from Requiem) to cover it, let alone forge the very careers of artists like Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford. And if there's any substance to that other criticism of Lloyd Webber lifting the melodic ideas of composers from Verdi to John Williams (we swear that's the theme to Jurassic Park bubbling up in Tom Jones's camped-up take on Whistle's "The Vaults of Heaven"), at least, like virtually every major composer, he's stolen--er, borrowed--from the best. --Jerry McCulley

Andrew LLoyd Webber - Gold Hits.......2007-07-13
I sent this CD to my parents and they love it! It is nice to preview the songs on-line instead of with greasy headphones in a music store! The shipping is always speedy and makes sending gifts across the country so much easier.
The Gold By Andrew.......2007-04-23
This cd is a must have for any Webber fan. It has many great songs from his most sucsessful musicals. But something I don't like about this cd is that some of the singer how sings some of the songs arn't the onse that sings the originals. Like "The Phantom Of The Opera" and "Love Changes Everything". Witch is so sad. Couse the original songs are so much better.
But besides that this cd is very good. With manye nice and difficult songs (I've sung some of the myself in siningclass).
So if you like Andrew's music this most sertanly is a most have.
The best of Webber.......2005-09-12
Although I like Andrew Llloyd Webber and his music very much, this collection earns only 4 stars and it's not because of the quality of the music but the level of performers. If a best of collection is made it should contain the best version ever done and this time it's not true. I could write the same review for the European edition (labeled import here) because the blend of the two would be a perfect best of.
Some examples: this version contains Memory sung by Betty Buckley while the Elaine Page version is light years better. Then it contains Patti Lupone's version of Don't Cry For Me Argentina. Even though Madonna wasn't the best Evita, she definitely sung Argentina in a way no-one could before or will ever. Whistle Down The Wind is represented with 3 songs - the place of the Tom Jones song is not here (the same could be said of Tina Arena's song o the European edition). Instead of the TJ song they could have included Take That Look Off Your Face by Marti Webb - one of the best songs by Webber. Pie Jesu from the Requiem is much better sung by Sarah Brightman. These are the faults.
What about the rest? Pure joy and material worth of 6 stars. Superstar, Phantom Of The Opera, Music Of The Night, I Don't Know How To Love Him, All I Ask Of You, No Matter What, Oh What A Circus - wonderful songs and wonderful performers. My all-time favorite from Webber will always be Music Of The Night and the version included here is the mesmerizing adaptation of Michael Crawford.
I don't advise anyone not to buy this album - it's good material, however it's far from being perfect.
THE BEST OF LLOYD WEBBER MADE FOR THE AMERICAN AUDIENCES.......2005-01-31
There are numerous compilations out on the market full of Andrew Lloyd Webber's music. As most people know, Lloyd Webber is the most successful musical composer of all time and many of his songs became standards not only in the theatre history, but also as tops on the charts. Even though he's British, his influence on the shape of the modern musical theatre expanded over the West End boundaries long ago and has thus made an enormous impact on Broadway. Two of his shows ("Cats" and "The phantom of the opera") hold the record as two the longest running shows in the history of Broadway. He has also been the only composer to have three of his shows running at Broadway concurrently. This compilation captures some of the best songs he has ever written, he personally supervised it and it is the best thing to have if you can't afford his five-CD compilation called "Now and forever", which was selected and supervised by him as well. You should bear in mind, however, that there are two compilations called Gold out there: The one made for the European and the British market, and this one, made for the American buyers. Some of the songs on both of them are the same, the others are performed by different artists and some can be found only in one of the two. This one here was issued later and it is digitally remastered. Therefore you should check your favourites and buy accordingly, or, if you can, buy them both, since both of them contain interesting songs and performers.
So here are my thoughts about the tracks in this one:
1. "Superstar" and "I don't know how to love him" are both from the concept album of "Jesus Christ Superstar". They sound wonderful as ever, although the orchestrations may seem a bit dated by now.
2. "Sunset Boulevard" is marked here with two songs. Barbra Streisand's powerful voice shines all the way through in "As if we never said goodbye"; it's a shame she never played Norma Desmond on Broadway, since Patti LuPone wasn't allowed to take her Norma to New York, and Glenn Close butchered the role. Her limited vocal abilities were hardly suited for the material, as it is shown by the second Sunset song, "The perfect year", performed by Close and Alan Campbell. They both lack a decent singing voice, so this is the one song I skip regularly. The song itself sounds much better in its single version with pops orchestration, as can be heard on the European version of this compilation, where it is performed by Dina Carroll. This version here can hardly be considered a gold one.
3. "The Phantom of the Opera" is represented by three songs. Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman performance in the song of the same title is amazing. They were both born to play their roles in this show and their voices fit together perfectly. Sarah can hit the high notes in the end like no other Christine. Cliff Richard and Sarah sing the lovely ballad "All I ask of you" with passion, and Cliff has a wonderful warmth in his voice. Finally, Michael Crawford gives his unique and mesmerising interpretation in "The music of the night".
4. The 1996 movie version of "Evita" is Madonna's best role to date and it brought an Academy Award for Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, who wrote "You must love me" especially for the big screen. This is another wonderful ballad with the haunting cello and piano solo. It just proves that Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice were the best collaborators. They really should do another musical together.
5. "The Joseph and his amazing Technicolor dreamcoat" was Webber's first musical and the signature song "Any dream will do" is performed here by Donny Osmond, who also appeared in the video version. I find his rendition even better than London's Jason Donovan, since Donny isn't strictly bound by the notes and so sings it more casually. A wonderful pop piece.
6."Memory" from "Cats" is probably the most famous of all Webber's songs, recorded by numerous artists. This version is sung by Betty Buckley, who was Broadway's Grizabella. Although Betty's performance can't be considered bad, I prefer Elaine Paige, who sung the song first, in the London production. Elaine has a note of sorrow in her at times husky voice, which I found very intriguing. Her performance can be considered definite, as heard on "Cats" DVD or in her latest two-disc compilation, "Centre stage: The very best of Elaine Paige", issued in May 2004. Still, those who prefer Ms. Buckley or who saw her on stage in this role won't be disappointed.
7. "Pie Jesu" is the best known song from Webber's "Requiem", written in 1985 to commemorate the death of his father. I'm not too keen on the version included here, performed by Charlotte Church, because her voice isn't as pretty as Sarah Brightman's on the original recording and the tempo is somewhat faster here.
8. "Don't cry for me Argentina" is among my all-time Lloyd Webber's favourites. I like all the ladies who performed "Evita" on the stage and on the screen (Julie Covington, Elaine Paige, Patti LuPone and Madonna), but on this disc is the version I am most satisfied with, since it is sung by Patti LuPone. Ms. LuPone has a very powerful voice with an amazing range and she deserved her Tony Award for this role. She was able to sound both vulnerable and decisive while singing this, whereas the other leading ladies emphasized one or the other in their interpretation. Mandy Patinkin's "Oh what a circus" is not the best, the orchestration is a little bit weak and his voice sounds thin to me. David Essex on the London cast recording is more suitable.
9. "Aspects of love" boast here with its top song, "Love changes everything", performed wonderfully by Michael Ball. It was his #1 hit and is probably one of the most beautiful love anthems ever written.
10. Three songs come from "Whistle down the wind". The studio release of the same title is one of the reasons I bought this compilation, although I already have the European one. It is performed by Sarah Brightman with Lloyd Webber playing the piano and a symphonic orchestra who nicely takes the lead of the main melody. Sarah voice is angelic; she sings it like a little bird. Very charming. Boyzone's "No matter what" was a huge pop hit in the charts. Again, we have a song with the suitable orchestrations and vocals. And lastly, Tom Jones' deep voice in combination with the back vocals of "The Sounds of Blackness" gives a rocking rendition of the church hymn "The vaults of heaven". It can't be found on the European version and Tom's voice shows it hasn't aged. Way to go.
11. For the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Webber wrote, together with his long-time lyricist Don Black, this last song, "Amigos para siempre or Friends for life". It's a nice duet between Sarah Brightman and Jose Carreras, their voices sore when bound together. The melody itself is neat, especially when the orchestra takes the lead.
Besides the fact that some of the performers here were not the best for my taste, there is also the fact that some of Lloyd Webber's shows are omitted in this version, most notably, "Tell me on a Sunday". Also, unlike its European counterpart, this compilation isn't aligned chronologically, so we have 1970 Superstar being the first song, 1993 Sunset Blvd comes the second, followed by The Phantom from 1986 and so on. None the less, this CD is excellent as an introduction to Lloyd Webber's music and one can continue with his cast recordings from there. It's also very handy as a single disc compilation for the American fans.
Super good CD.......2004-12-31
The songs on this CD are great. If you also play piano, the book of the same title goes perfectly with the CD. You can following along with the music and learn the songs on the piano.

What the heck???.......2007-03-20
Music is great, as is the playing. However, the last song is not Magnetic Rag but rather the same version of Maple Leaf Rag heard earlier on the album.
What is with that?
More Than Excellent.......2006-08-16
I had previously purchased a Scott Joplin CD and was disappointed by the dull quality and dispirited playing by the artist. This CD more than makes up for it. The music was beautifully performed and the recording was very clear. Every piece was perfect!

There's something about Carl Perkins's original version of "Blue Suede Shoes" that's wilder than Elvis's less popular, though today better known, cover of the song. It's not that Perkins is in your face; his version is remarkably restrained. But that restraint hides a real sense of hillbilly threat--Elvis is playing, but Carl sounds like he'd kick your teeth in. That vocal edge, along with his influential lead guitar, is what makes Perkins' sides such as "Honey Don't" and "Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby" the very definition of rockabilly's darker edge--all of which becomes perfectly clear when he finally cuts loose and gets "Dixie Fried." --David Cantwell
Customer Reviews:
Great collection of his most essential songs.......2007-06-12
Even though some of Carl's tunes aren't on this CD, such as "Pink Pedal Pushers", "That's Right", and some others, (you can find all of his Sun recordings on other compilations), this is a must-have. Especially if you don't have any of his material. A couple of songs are more straight country like "Sure to Fall" and "Movie Magg", but most are bound to knock your socks off. For anyone who likes not just rockabilly music, but early rock'n'roll in general, I highly recommend this. THE definitive rockabilly guitarist, Mr. Blue Suede Shoes, is still rocking in heaven.
GO CAT GO!!!!
Fantastic.......2007-03-09
I never had that much of an appreciation for Carl Perkins until I got this album. Then I realized how much other people covered his songs and what a talent he was. Good voice, clever lyrics and major skills on the guitar! He was definitely a major influence on all rock-n-roll.

Not just a primal rocker whose influence on those who came after oozes out of every track...the man could flat out play!! Carl was a superb guitar player and never better than in these Sun cuts. Listen and enjoy

While Lewis's Sun sessions between 1956 and 1963 are legendarily eclectic (everything from Stephen Foster to Hank Williams to a rewrite of the Midnighters' "Sexy Ways"), this single-disc distillation sticks mainly to rock and country veins. The records that made the Killer a short-lived yet serious challenger to Elvis--"Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On," "Great Balls of Fire"--are here, in addition to lesser known but equally hot sides such as "It'll Be Me" and the blindingly dirty-minded "Big Legged Woman." A key collection from one of America's greatest recorded talents. --Rickey Wright

The Killer leaves me ....Breathless!!!.......2007-06-12
Because there are so many compilations out there of Jerry Lee's Sun recordings, and this CD has only 18 songs on it, I'll say this is a fantastic introduction to his classic material. He recorded an enormous amount of material for the Sun label, but this is still a must-have, especially for anyone who doesn't have any of his songs.
You could say that Jerry Lee is the real king of rock'n'roll, certainly one of the founding fathers, and much wilder than Elvis. But really, who cares who the "King" of rock'n'roll is anyway? Yes, Elvis was great and historically important, but so were so many others (many of whom were much more musically talented) including Jerry Lee. The real wild man of Sun Records is still rocking after all these years-a true survivor!
They don't call him "Killer" for nothing!.......2006-09-12
Jerry Lee Lewis is truly the King Of Rock and Roll (sorry Elvis).
This CD contains all the major hits plus many other rockin' tunes Jerry Lee recorded on the fabled Sun label.
The sound quality is first-rate.
I only wish there were some decent liner notes.
Leaves You Breathless--ah!.......2006-04-25
When I was a little kid, I remember watching Jerry Lee Lewis on some TV show or other and finding him a little scary. All that manic energy. He looked dangerous. When I got a little older, I decided that was a good thing.
Of course, coming of age in the age of psychedelia, I might have found Jerry Lee a little passe--but one of the good things about that era was that there really was an appreciation of what went down before. The best 60s groups were always quick to credit their artistic forefathers. Certainly that was the case with the Beatles and the Stones. The Beatles, like Jerry Lee here, did a version of "Matchbox" in their day, certainly a nod toward the greats of the previous decade.
Jerry Lee is known primarily for a handful of hard driving, piano based rockers like "Great Balls of Fire" and "Whole Lotta Shankin'..." Aficionados (and knowlegeable dilettantes) know that he had a lot more up his sleeve than that. OK, so he couldn't turn in a masterful ballad, but there's still enough variety in the uptempo numbers to satisfy any discriminating rock'n'roll fan. What can you say about a collection that includes a rollicking "When The Saints Go Marchin' In" and then turns around and offers up a frankly salacious "Big Legged Woman" for your listening pleasure. Call it your basic Southern dichotomy--that largely unself-concsious blend of the sacred and the profane. Stylistically it provides textbook example after example of rock's links to the blues and C&W. It's all part of the gumbo, and it's all pretty darn tasty.
GREAT FUN, GO TELL ELVIS TO O.D. IN HIS BATHTUB!.......2005-12-16
Jerry Lee Lewis is the real king of Rock and Roll. Well, he's way better than Elvis, for sure. Jerry Lee Lewis was wilder, way more fun, and way more charismatic. Just watch GREAT BALLS OF FIRE, that is one cool movie. ELVIS is lame, I can't stand his songs, but JERRY LEE LEWIS I can put on at a party and people will get shakin! In fact there will be a WHOLE LOTTA SHAKIN' if that tune is playing. This collection here is the most satisfying, sure AMAZON highlights the other SUN collection (25 hits) over this one (18), but this is the better collection. While the other one has more songs, it doesn't include WILD ONE, which is absolutely key if you are going to purchase some JERRY LEE. This version sticks to the killer, and it includes WILD ONE, which is a short song... but its so good. I can usually listen to it ten times over, and you mix in the other fifties gems BIG LEGGED WOMAN, HIGH SCHOOL CONFIDENTIAL, or GREAT BALLS OF FIRE and you have one fun assed piece of American rock and roll. Everybody will enjoy this stuff!
Sound is old-not new like today.......2005-08-18
I can tell you that I love Jerry Lee and his songs. The only thing I didn't like about this CD is that it sounds old. It sounds like a record being played instead of a CD. It's not clear or crisp like a CD you would buy today, but it does have all of his classics on it.
