Talented drummer and lyricist too........2007-07-10
Peter did such a top notch job and you didn't get to see all of that talent before but you sure can here.
The Cat Scratches Out a Cool Record..........2007-05-31
Some people think this record is less than purrrrfect...sorry I couldn't resist. And stacking this up against the other Kiss records from the 70's it has mighty strong company. But with an open mind - it's pretty good. I just wish there were less horns and more guitars. "I'm Gonna Love You" is cool and here's the point, it could be better if it was just a tad bit more rockin. I love "Hooked on Rock and Roll" and I could have seen Kiss doing that one live with guitars in place of the horns. "Tossin and Turnin" grooves nice, "You Matter to Me" is a cool poppy tune, but I think "I Can't Stop the Rain" is a true masterpiece that was overlooked. That is just a beautiful tune. But like Gene, Peter has some goofy tunes on here let's be honest..."...Sugar Papa Likes" and "Kiss the Girl Goodbye" aren't so great. And there is a lot of mushy stuff too..."Easy Thing". But, again, the diversity of the albums is what I enjoyed, and there are some very good tunes on this one.
Ain't no future in that rock 'n' roll........2007-02-07
In September of 1978, all four members of KISS simultaneously released solo albums. This is the album by the drummer. It'n not too good, in my opinion. "That's the Kind of Sugar Papa Likes" is fun, in a dopey kind of way. And "I'm Gonna Love You" is decent, but the rest of the album isn't very impressive. The cover version of the early-'60s classic "Tossin' and Turnin'" pales next to the original. But the ballads are especially bad. For members of the KISS Army only.
The Cat Man Roars.......2006-12-09
Peter Criss and his solo album, he's the most under rated and appreciated of the four original members, even more under rated by the KISS army from their 80s and early 90s output without him. Paul SAtanley was a too dimensional vocalist- he could sing high and higher. Gene Simmons could go low and lower. Ace was pretty monotone and over rated by me myself. To see how good this guy Criss is, listen to the Eric Carr sung version of Beth on Smashes- it's horrible!!! Imagine KISS classics like Beth, Hard Luck Woman and the under rated Hooligan and Dirty Living without him. Sure Gene or Paul could sing those, but Peter Criss is not a one or two dimensional voclist- he's soulful and tender and can still rock. This album is a mix of glam rock and jazz. The pop style glamn rock of movies like Velvet Goldmine easily come to mind on this album, otherwise Peter Criss is a decent, well rounded jazz drummer who wanted to be cool so bad he ended up becoming cliche. Take a look at his life outside music in KISS to see this - it's one cliche after another. Kiss' decline in the 80s and comeback in the 90s back to a lackluster tour without him again is really indicitive that KISS was nothing as soon as Ace and Peter Left, outside from Creatues and Revenge, one hit song from every album, thier 70s output really shines amidst a blur of bad taste 80s albums. I can respect Eric Singer wearing the cat man makeup because of Revenge, but Peter Criss is THE KISS drummer and without him they were nothing.
Not That Good.......2006-11-11
I know that this is not technically a KISS album and should be treated as Peter Criss' first solo album, but it isn't that good. It sounds more like a Jazz-meets-Pop-meets-Blues album. This is a must-have for the seroius collectors, but if you're not into the aforementioned style of music, avoid this album.

This is the best one so far.............2001-06-05
I fully agree with the other reviewers, the song "Carrot Cake".. well once you heard then it s there. Bernstein plays so cool and so beautiful, one good example of this is the standard "who can I turn to", and by the way, what an intro he does on that song.Bernstein and Goldings go so well together they are both cool players with a fantastic groove so that is as I suppose the reason why they blend so well. Players like Jimmy Smith and Joey de Fransesco are "hot" players and really know how to strike a groove, but question is if it do not "hit you harder" when it is done the way Goldings does it. I have Hank Mobleys song "The Breakthrough " in mind, first Goldings gives it a try and suddenly he "takes off" and his bass lines kills me. So if you like Bernstein and Goldings and do not have this one, buy it it is a must have.
The finest example of modern jazz........2000-10-15
Peter Bernstein's playing on Earth Tones is beautiful with his strong sense of melody and depth of phrasing, which is present if he is the leader or a sideman. What sets Earth Tones apart is composition. Peter has chosen three standards which in his hands sound like originals and five originals which sound like standards, my favorite being "Carrot Cake" a classic funk driven vamp which embodies everything modern jazz should be.
One Very Fine Recording.......2000-06-13
The inventive, tight performances of this power trio displays a level of communication and understanding that makes it one of the very best trio discs of recent issue. Peter Bernstein is an extremely talented composer and guitarist. With Larry Goldings, one of today's finer keyboard players on Hammond B3 (and a brilliant composer in his own right) and Bill Stewart on drums (well-deserving of just having been voted jazz drummer of the year for the past three years by "Modern Drummer Magazine") giving sensitive, exciting and imaginative performances, "Earth Tones" displays a varied array of musical styles all with very accessible and even catchy hooks. "Acrobat" written by Goldings and "Carrot Cake" written by Bernstein are just two tunes that instantly come to mind as charts that should become future standards. Without question, this disc should have appeared on a major with substantial backing and label support.

Bernstein-Mehldau what a duo..............2001-04-30
I am surprised that noone has reviewed this one. Bernsteins playing gives you "goose bumps" right away. and so does Mehldaus playing. The way Bernstein plays is extremely melodic, and you can hear the chordal movement (same as when you hear Kenny Burrell) and his tone is just beautiful, and on top of this. his lyrical playing it is also groovy. Also, check out Mehldaus playing, in particular on the ballad "The things we did last summer" I wonder if yoy can get much more "feeling " out of a piano. McBride on bass keep things "cookin"

Lovely, Well-Crafted, Straight-Ahead Date.......2007-04-16
This is a relaxing album, and quite interesting musically. Bernstein, a very creative composer, wrote 6 of the 8 songs. He plays (mostly) single-note guitar lines, somewhat reminiscent of Grant Green. His solos are lyrical and very well-constructed. Pianist Brad Mehldau is superb, and has many fine, intricate solos. Bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Bill Stewart, who've played together a lot, provide interesting patterns and keep things tight and swinging throughout. There's a cool bass solo on "Simple As That," perhaps my favorite song on the album. All the songs are good, however, and there's a nice variety of tempos. The album ends with a sublime guitar solo performance of "Blood Count," the Billy Strayhorn classic. Liner notes include a lengthy, well-written essay by pianist Mehldau.
You can listen to this one over and over and over..........2005-05-24
... and it just gets better. These guys (and I'm mainly talking about Bernstein and Mehldau) are musical geniuses, both showing unbelievable richness of ideas in song and improvisation. I'm a big fan of Bill Evans but I'm in the process of deciding that Mehldau is an even more inventive pianist. Listening to Mehldau, I can hear strains of Evans, Keith Jarrett and even classical influences but all of these seem to have been fused in the man's subconscious and emerge even more beautiful. Bernstein is such a brilliant guitar virtuoso - coherent, surprising, never sloppy - in my opinion a jazz Segovia - he's got to be one of the best jazz guitarist ever to play. Apparently, Bernstein and Mehldau have been playing together since both were students and it really comes through in their music. The collaboration of these two remakable talents is unusually captivating. Don't miss them together on this fine CD.
Consummate taste and musicality.......2004-02-04
Almost sounds like damning with faint praise, doesn't it? That's hardly my intention.
I've complained elsewhere about stale post-bop sessions. But what about fresh ones, as we have here? If you get this music right, it can be entirely glorious. Which Heart's Content is. In spades.
What you need to make this happen is a bunch of canny veterans, guys like Brad Mehldau, piano (although at thirty-something he's a pretty young veteran); Larry Grenadier, bass (one of the very top bottom men around); and the remarkable Bill Stewart, drums (long John Scofield's drummer of choice), in deep conversation with a seasoned veteran, like guitarist-leader, Mr. Bernstein. Then things can literally blow off the charts,
The thing I don't like about a lot of these sessions is that one or more of the players seems intent on showing the world he's got the chops to hang with the big boys. Thus, ego takes over and the interactive and conversational aspect of the music suffers. But if the leader has his head on straight, chooses the exact right musicians, and has a lightly-worn knowledge of the entire scope of jazz history, and--this is essential--isn't concerned with slavishly evoking it--real magic can happen.
It's taken a while, with quite a few stops and starts, but Gerry Teekins at Criss Cross Jazz, the little label that could, has finally assembled some absolutely top drawer musicians--Ralph Peterson, Adam Rogers, Edward Simon, Alex Sipigian come to mind--and is now producing some of the very finest straight ahead jazz around. Heart's Content, along with Adam Rogers's Allegory, is among the very best.
Sophisticated Bluesieness.......2003-05-28
This is Bernstein 5th album as a leader. This time it is a guitar/piano based album with the fantastic Brad Mehldau on the piano.Bernstein have used Mehldau before (Something is Burnin 1992) and( Signs of life 1994)
The music here is mostly Bernstein originals with 2 exceptions. The Bernstein originals on this one is perhaps a little bit less groovy, than on the other albums ,but they swing hard of course and has that kind of "eternal beauty" and with a very very strong melodic feel that is so typical for Bernstein... My favourites are "Little Green Men" and "Constant Conversation"
Long time associate Bill Stewart (Larry Goldings trio) is on the drums and his report with Bernstein is almost telepatic.
All in all..a wonderful album....that rewards repeated listening.

Good Music.......2007-03-12
While i would stop short in saying that it has better songs than I Cant Stop The Rain and Dont You Let Me Down on his first solo,i can say this is a better overall effort.
It contains a Gene Simmons song called Feels Like Heaven, which he was so kind as to let Peter have.I am surprized that Kiss didnt actually do that song as its quite a good song.
I cannot find a bad song here.I actually bought this album in about 1985.It was as rare as anything in those days.News of what Kiss was doing was scarce, let alone ex members, there was a heavy metal shop in Melbourne central. But i'd hardly call this heavy metal.Problem was this album crashed initially as far as record sales went.I got it as an import, and i was glad i did cause i realy enjoyed this album better than any of his other solo's.
Went through a patch and just kept playing it,but the radio stations refused to have anything to do with Kiss in those days.1982 was a bad year to release this album.
Going through the tracks in this album he realy did a fine job at picking some emotional tracks like Tears,Jealous Guy(which is different to the other versions ive heard but still quite good),Let Me Rock You(I realy like this tune)and First Day In The Rain which are all excellent.
Also he had some good disco/rock type tracks here like Let It Go,Destiny,Some Kinda' Hurricane and Bad Boys, not a bad song here.
It was a while till he released another solo after this, but it wasnt because this was a bad album.
Peter Criss's Greatest Album!.......2005-02-28
After releasing two phenomenal solo albums in 1978 and 1980, Peter Criss returned to the studio to record the greatest album of his solo career, 1982s "Let Me Rock You." Joining Peter is his third solo venture was the great songwritter Russ Ballard (the writer of Ace's remake of "New York Groove"). Taking the producer's chair once again was Peter's personal favorite, Vinnie Poncia. Together, this trio put together a marvelous album that is too good to put into words. The song-writting is top-notch and Peter's vocals are the best they have ever been. His vocals are the cleanest on this album than any of his other previous work. Better than any other album he's recorded with KISS or solo. The whole album is truly magnificent. The sound of this album is more rock and roll and mixed in is the piano, the brass and the synthesizer that Peter uses very well. This album can please anyone and it is probably one of my favorite albums I have ever bought.
The opening track, "Let It Go" is an excellent piece of Rock and Roll. Great vocals by Peter and the guitar riffs are excellent. This is one of Peter's best songs to date. The next track, "Tears" was in fact co-written by former KISS guitarist Vinnie Vincent and also plays guitar on this track. This is very powerful semi-ballad. The song moves at a solid pace with a very powerful instrumentals backing up Peter's voice. The next track, "Move On Over" was written by Criss and Poncia. These two make a great songwriting pair. This is the greatest dance song Peter Criss has ever written. This is very solid rock and roller that contains heavy guitar solos and is a true masterpiece as it instantly become another Peter Criss classic.
The next track, "Jealous Guy", a track originally performed by John Lennon, Criss did an excellent job in remaking this rock classic. Peter's vocals are truly magnificent and he did an excellent job recreating the feel and emotion to Lennon's original version. The next track, "Destiny" is a very heavy rock and roller. The song is about meeting the love of your life and how it all happens because of destiny. The lead guitar truly shines here. Listen to the sample and you'll know what I mean. Another excellent classic is, "Some Kinda' Hurricane" is one of the songs that Russ Ballard wrote. The song is very heavy instrumentally and heavy on Peter's vocals. Another instant classic right here! The title track, "Let Me Rock You" is actually a 1950s style doo wop. Peter does a marvelous job on this song and he captured the style of doo wop very well.
Track eight, the second ballad of the album, "First Day In the Rain" is a good Peter ballad, but not his absolute best. Another song about being out on his own again. The next track, "Feel Like Heaven" was actually written by Gene Simmons. This is a lighter heavy metal track that sounds great with Peter's jazzy style voice over those guitars. Finally, the last track, "Bad Boys" is a track that Peter based on his childhood and advice his mother would give him as a child, "Don't go where the BAD BOYS go." This is light-sounding track and is the the second slowest song on the album but still is another unique Peter Criss song.
This album is without a doubt is Peter Criss's greatest moment as a solo artist and no one can say any different. I was hooked on this album as soon as I listened to it one time fully. I've owned this album for only 1 day and here I am already telling you how great this is. It's so good, don't even bother listening to samples of the songs. This is not an album that takes a while to get used to or anything like that. On this album, the Catman sinks his claws into you. Just sit back and let Peter Criss rock you away! Rock on, Catman!
ESSENTIAL MOMENT FROM THE CAT-ALOGUE.......2005-01-03
This CD is essential and may surprise many doubters and nay-sayers who have dismissed Peter as the least capable Kiss member past and present. Peter Criss excudes charisma on this one with a stylish collection of material that still stands up today some 20 odd years plus. Having possibly accepted that he was not the greatest songwriter, he opted wisely for a collection of his own work and some contemporary writers such as Russ Ballard. Neither the best vocalist or drummer it is the heart and soul that draws the listener in. Highlights abound and the styles are varied. "Let It Go" is a great opener somewhat reminisant of Dynasty's "Dirty Living". It is the next cab off the rank in the Vinnie Vincent (then known as Vincent Cusano) penned "Tears" that is the stella highlight. This is the best songs Peter has put his vocals too bar non, and could have been with some push a radio hit. One assumes this song was recommended to Criss by the label during the early recording sessions for the masked ones "Creatures" opus. Indeed "Feel Like Heaven" was penned by Gene Simmons although that song feels as if it were derived from the "Unmasked" and "Dynasty" eras and is nowhere near as good. "First Day In The Rain" is sublime too both emotive and atmospheric being a dreamy ballad no way insipid in inspiration like "Beth". The title track "Let Me Rock You" is fifties doo wop and is kitchy but likeable too, reminding me a little of Billy Joel's 'Uptown Girl'. The closer of "Bad Boys" is an obvious nod to the Stones and is possibly the best Criss penned number to date. Obviously ignored by a label and a record buying public who had out grown Kiss let alone the ex drummer, it is a real shame because "Let Me Rock You" was accessible pop rock with a slight eighties feel that deserved huge sales. Certainly more accessible than ever before.
Criss rock and roll over........2004-07-02
Criss is here far from the Kiss sound. But it doesnt matter. Its
a little improvment from the Out of Control album, and it sounds fresh in todays music. Kiss producer Vini Poncia has taken over the production, and the soundpicture is pure magic. Its sympho rock, espesially on Track 2 Tears. Let it go Track 1 is more rock and roll. Move on Over Track 3 its more simple. He also have
a go on the John Lennon hit Jealous Guy. Eat youre heart out Brian Ferry, who also had a minor hit with this one. Track 5 Destiny has a certain quality over it, but its not Criss on his best. Track 6 Somekinda hurricane, is a real rocker, fast and moving towards a climax of pure rock orgasm. Track 7 Let me Rock you, is the title track, and been out for a surprise. Criss doing doooo op, and its doesnt sounds like rock, is pure pop with the sound from the sixteees. This is a treat, and earfriendly. Pure joy. More or less. Track 8 First day in the rain is a ballad, but its not up to it`s usuall standard. Track 9
Feel like heaven is back on what we can called a "light heavy metal track". Track 10 Bad Boys is rythm and blues and its interesting. Over all Its time for a new Solo album from Peter Criss. Peter Criss will surely rock you on this one.
Peter Criss Shines!.......2004-01-12

cool.......2007-03-12
While i think that this was not a bad album, after the title track Out Of Control, everything else never hit the spot with me.Out Of Control was such a good song i kept playing that one over and over.
While there is some good tunes here,i never actually got into this album much.It was realy made to get a hit on the charts, with a then modern sound. Not too bad though, but nothing like his efforts in Kiss.
Like a foul-smelling litter box.......2007-01-11
This album stinks. Period. And this is coming from someone who loves KISS and actually grew up with Peter being my favorite member. But let's be honest. The guy stinks as a solo act. Be unbiased for a moment. Try listening to these songs without ANY THOUGHT of them being from your childhood idol. What would you think of these songs if they were coming from a new artist you'd never heard of? If you had even minimal taste, you'd probably laugh at these songs. The production is flat and bland, the arrangements are terrible and the songwriting never gets across the barrier of mediocrity, and usually falls well BELOW that barrier.
What's even funnier to me about this album is how clueless Peter was (and probably still is) about his own talents. Listen to some of his interviews back then when he just left KISS and was working on this. He was actually talking about TOURING LARGE ARENAS with this music! He was calling himself a "composer" and talking about being "bigger than KISS" possibly. Holy Delusions of Grandeur, Catman!!
I don't want to completely destroy this album, though, because there are things about Pete that I do like a lot, even love. His voice, even though it goes off-key a lot, is great, and no one in rock had a better scream voice than him (except maybe Roger Daltrey). And he did tend to shine when he wrote weepy ballads. "Kiss the Girl Goodbye," "Easy Thing" from his first album, "By Myself" and "Feel Like Letting Go" from this one are decent songs, the first two being much better.
But have you ever heard the guy's demos? If so, you'll realize just how much THE PRODUCERS of the songs added to them. The demo of "Beth," originally called "Beck," was terrible, but Bob Ezrin shaped it into something strong. The demos for "Hooligan" and "Hooked on Rock 'n Roll," or even "Dirty Livin'" were all very weak, but again, the producers shaped them into stronger material. Peter was fantastic during KISS' heyday in the early 1970s. His drumming was wild and great then, his singing was great and his vibe was happenin'. He just deteriorated greatly over the years, especially his drumming.
It's hard to believe the drumming on these albums is from the same guy who recorded the amazing Kiss Alive. It's so boring, so dull, so lifeless, much like the music. Maybe that's the problem right there, I don't know. Or maybe it was all the coke and other drugs he was doing.
Anyway, if you want to relive some nostalgia, that's great, good for you. I do the same thing sometimes. But don't kid yourself. This album sucks mule. Hard.
1978 solo effort has more strong tunes on it.......2006-02-17
If you really like Peter Criss' singing voice, and you're not too hard on his writing chops (which are not terribly strong), I think you will STILL find his original solo collection from 1978 a better album. On "Out of Control" a lot of the material suffers from sort-of cheesy lyrics (though heartfelt, sometimes a bit weak, unintentionally comic), and, as someone else noted, some misfires when Criss attempts to rock harder than he should be doing with this outfit. My favorite track is "Words" which, for me as a KISS fan and Criss admirer, makes this CD worth owning. But probably not for $24.00.
But, if you're curious, and you gotta have it, then you gotta have it.
Peter Criss 1978: Part II.......2005-02-18
In 1978, when KISS released the four solo albums from each member, Peter Criss created an album unlike any KISS album ever heard. He created an album that was all Peter. The album was born out of his childhood inspirations such as R&B and 50s Rock and Roll. That album was superior and was a genuine album from the Catman. Then in 1980 after Peter Criss's departure from KISS, he did it again. He created the first album of his solo career. This album picks up right where 1978's solo album left off. It contains the same spirit, same wonderful vocals, the perfect mixture of pop, rock, loveable ballads, and rockin and rollin tunes. It's everything that Peter Criss 1978 was and this time Peter did even better. This is the Cat's Meow!
The opening song is the heartfelt and loving ballad, "By Myself." This song is about Peter now out on his own away from KISS and starting all over again and on his own again. The song is very well acoustically written and Peter sings this song with such a loving and passionate manner that will make you cry. The next track, "In Trouble Again" a heavy rocker with a momentus array of piano, brass and guitars mixed with Peter's cathcy vocals and "Where Will They Run" has an intro that sounds similar to KISS's 1979 hit, "Sure Know Something" and this song is slower than the previous track but is definitely a soothing tune. The next track, "I Found Love" is in the same vein with 1978s, "Rock Me, Baby." It has very catchy vocals and a rockin and rollin sound that makes you wanna get up and dance. Then "There's Nothin Better" is pretty much "I Found Love" Part II. The lyrics are in the same area and continuing with finding love and singing that there is no one better than each other.
The title track, "Out of Control" is a catchy tune that is very well written and arranged and contains great guitar work. The next ballad of the album, "Words" is a very lovely piece. Once again Peter delivers very loving vocals and the song may very well be on of Peter's best ballads ever written. The next track, "You Better Run" is another heavy song with great guitar solos and brass arrangements. Then the last rocker, "My Life" is a song based on Peter's personality and experinces and rocks all the way through. The last song of the album, the power-ballad "Feel Like Letting Go" is so loving and will really bring tears to your face. This ballad is in the same vein as 1978s, "Don't You Let Me Down" when it comes to singing the chorus. Peter shows his greatest talents with ballads on this song. It's such a wonderful way to end a wondeful album.
This album is truly phenomenal. Picking up right where Criss 1978s solo effort left off, he delivered another album in that same vein and did just as well as two years prior if not better. This album has what many rock albums lack: SPIRIT! Peter's albums all have spirit to them and you can hear that in his voice and in the music. And it hurts me to know that Gene Simmons, says that Peter Criss has no talent in song writing, playing drums and singing. It is a fact that Gene shouldn't even open his mouth, because half of the songs he wrote for KISS in their career were terrible and outside of KISS, he can't write a tune to save his life. And it really hurts me because Peter is my idol and I know it hurts Peter to know that Gene says that about him. Peter's greatest talents are truly resembled on this album. No one, not even Gene Simmons can say any differently! Take a ride on the wild side with The Catman, Peter Criss and go "Out of Control."
OUT OF KISS CONTROL.......2005-01-03
This is a collection of tunes that continue the traditions of Peter's Kiss solo album a couple of years prior. Indeed one may suspect that this album may have been released if he were to have kept his tenure within Kiss as it does not possess the trump card of showing his naked face on the cover. Either way by this point I am sure nobody really would have been too concerned. Kiss' own sales were waining leaving any real hope of this album getting serious attention at a minimum. So is it good? Well if you didn't like the predecessor then this one will impress you not. But if you are one of the few that ranks that opus high, as I do then this will please too. A nice variety of styles only tarnished when it tries to rock a little too hard. Delights abound being "By Myself" with its simple acoustic guitar backing and heartfelt sadness and "Words" that would benefit from a little more tempo but still manages to please. "I Found Love" and "There's Nothing Better" are great rock pop and personal favourite "My Life" which is spirited and very optimistic for the drummer known as the 'complainer' by other group members. One star deducted for the agony of the closer "Feel Like Letting Go" which is like nails on a blackboard and the title track "Out Of Control" which would have benefited from a little more substance lyrically. However if you like flaws in your artists that demonstrate risk taking and genuine love of their craft then this one is very much recommended.

Bernstein is always 5 stars................2001-05-21
Someone has to review this one, so I am doing it now, although I might not be the right one to do it, since I am a great fan of Bernstein and will rate anything he plays 5 stars because of his wonderful clear tone, swinging lines, and that he is an honest player, no hidding behind a "flashy technic" all this added with a heavy blues feeling. The Grant Green influence is very obvious on this CD, and on the blues called "Sideburns" you really can hear Greens impact on Bernstein, same thing with "This is the start of something new". Greens version can be heard on the CD from 1965 with Larry Young and Hank Mobley. This was Bernsteins first recording as a leader, he has certainly grown as a player since then, but he was already then a world class player All songs on this CD are well performed, and Brad Mehldaus playing is as always outstanding and very very subtle and swinging.

Klassical KISS..........2004-06-25
KISS tribute albums started cropping up more than a decade ago very quickly oversaturating this market with a multitude of cds of varying quality (Hard To Believe, KISS of Death, Spacewalk). Now comes a tribute cd that offers a fresh and unique take on old KISS classics. Classical orchestration has long been a staple of KISS' repertoire, going back to the string ensemble used for the mega-hit Beth in 1976 progressing to the orchestral leanings and gregorian style chanting of the Elder album (1981) to the symphonic version of Black Diamond on their official KISS My A** tribute album to 2003's full blown KISS Symphony project.
This quartet interprets both well known KISS tunes (Detroit Rock City, Rock and Roll All Night) and more obscure material (Goin' Blind). Some of the choices are downright offbeat, a string quartet version of the funky Ace Frehley number New York Groove...surely you jest...but what is remarkable is how well it works.
Undisputed highlights are the beautiful renditions of Hard Luck Woman, Goin' Blind and Beth. The quartet incorporates subtle new parts that compliment these well loved melodies tremendously. Love Gun and I Was Made For Lovin' You are extremely powerful renditions also, if not just a little too reminiscent of the KISS Symphony cd and dvd. Even overplayed numbers like Calling Dr.Love and Rock and Roll All Nite are given new life by this incredibly talented ensemble.
From the Rock and Roll Over album influenced cover art to the last strains of New York Groove, this unique tribute cd is a winner all the way.
From a (classic) KISS and Classical music Fan!.......2004-04-23
EXCELLENT! I just bought this CD, and have already listened to it a half dozen times. I am a HUGE fan from the classic KISS years (1974-1979 - the years with Peter and Ace in the group).
If you are a KISS fan, and also like string quartet music, you will love this. If you are a fan of either (KISS or string quartet music), you will have a better appreciation and like for both after purchasing and hearing this CD.
These guys give the correct respect to classic KISS performance and it is especially seen in the string harmonies, and Ace's guitar solos in each song (except of course "Beth" which didn't have a solo by Ace until the "Unplugged" CD). The only down side of this are the songs that aren't on it, but hopefully that will mean a Volume 2!
GREAT CD!
