5 out of 5 stars GET SLADE.......2007-02-13

If you're already familiar with Slade's brand of unadulterated, balls-to-the-wall ROCK, then save yourself a bit of time and just buy it. You will NOT be disappointed.

If you've never heard of Slade until now, keep reading and I'll do my best to explain why this release is worth every penny. I'll leave it to others to pontificate on track lists and subjective opinion. Since I've never seen them perform live, I feel the only way to fully endorse your purchase is to start at the beginning and at least explain why I chose to buy this CD at 50 years of age. If my words strike a chord in your rock & roll heart then this exceptional release is probably for you.

I first bought "Slade Alive" on vinyl in the early 70's. Now, after seconds of wracking my brain, I can't for the life of me remember why I actually bought it. My parents' musical tastes ran from classical to easy listening so maybe I was just musically rebelling against whatever it is that adolescent teens rebel against when they've got nothing against which to actually rebel.

Leaning more to the rockier side of the road, I do recall owning record albums ranging from Chuck Berry's, "London Sessions" (Live), to The Stone's octagonal packaged, "Through the Past, Darkly" and "Led Zeppelin III" (with yet another gimmicky cover design).

Point is, when I first dropped the stylus on "Slade Alive" as a young teen, I was literally transformed. I thought I knew rock & roll until I heard these guys. They were RAW, RUDE & RAUCOUS - the perfect blend of soul-borne mania, jackhammer rhythms, solid bass lines, over-the-top guitar leads, and ferocious vocals. Most of all, their live recordings screamed of FUN!

"Slade Alive!" is a powerful force to be reckoned with - steeped in expert musicianship that refused to take itself too seriously. Unfortunately, while endearing themselves to European rockers, they were largely ignored in North America. The loss was entirely ours here in the United States & Canada.

This Slade release is actually a re-mastered, two disc version of four separate live releases. (The sound quality is extraordinary.) For anyone interested, these Slade tracks will have you up, dancing, and whipping your air guitar into a frothing, festive frenzy.

Hearing some of my favorite songs again for the first time in over 35 years, I'm amazed how well all of the tracks on, "Slade Alive!" hold up. Yes, they sound like pissed-stupid, soccer hooligans in a few places, but overall this release captures the pure energy of what their live shows must have been like during that grand, brief, and compressed era of early 70's POWERGLAMROCK&ROLL..

Sadly, no one is very likely to see Slade on stage any time soon. If you were one of the lucky few to have seen Slade perform live, my Noddy hat is indeed doffed to you! (If you're ever in Macon, Georgia, I'd be honored to pony up a pint or two just to hear what their live shows were really like.)

And before you write them off as a bunch of impotent geezers, let me tell you how far ahead of their time they were in at least one category. Slade appears to have pioneered the now popular habit of "urban" spelling for some of their song titles. To wit: "Mama Weer All Crazee Now," "Gudbuy T'Jane," and "Cum On Feel The Noize." Coincidentally, these are three of their most popular songs. Go figure.

So there you have it. If you love great Rock & Roll tempered by fine musicianship and unpretentious audacity, then this disc is definitely for you.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest... EVER.......2007-01-13

I've been listening to this album since it was given to me by my aunt in around 1973 (I've got it on CD now). This version of Born To Be Wild makes Mars Bonfire's version sound like Leonard Cohen on downers. It's the greatest noise I've ever heard. Pure Loud Noise with Brilliance. Dave Hill's guitar solo on Darling Be Home Soon is just sublime. After 24 years this is still my favourite live band, and that's really saying something.

5 out of 5 stars HEAD TURNING---EAR BENDING ROCK!!!!!.......2006-12-15

When this record hit the shores of America it made even the dozing Sopor-freaks in Detroit set up and say "WHA!!????" Some called it "Album of the Year". During the years 1970-1972 Hard Rock music had been redefined to be spelled STOOPID music---but, oh well, loud, noisey and brainless it definetly was, and English ta-boot. Rock no longer had to be meaningful to have meaning---it was, in a way, a return to form after the excesses of Prog Rock. It was quite refreshing then, as it is now.

    10- C'Mon Feel The Noize

You get 41 minutes of a wild, almost frantic onslaught from Slade recorded from a '76 USA and a '77 UK tour. Produced by Chas Chandler, the quality is excellent, the song transitions (mostly) smooth, and the feeling is that you are smack in the middle of all the wildness of a 70's Slade concert. When Noddy belts out a howling "Stand Up, Stand Up, Stand Up and Be Yourself!", you want to jump up and magically join the crowd. MC Slade then hits you with "Is Everyone Crazee?... Mama WE'RE ALL CRAZEE NOW!". Let the party begin - there's no stopping it.
The pace slows for a second, obviously shifting shows for a live set of Burnin' In The Heat Love. Check out the power guitars... this is Slade? Noddy brings it down a notch and makes it personal, with a heartfelt version of Everyday. He encourages the crowd to sing along and they have a grand time doing so. You're going to wish you were at this show!
Time to say Gudbuy T'Jane - the group brings it full speed with the guitars outfront and 4 minutes is just not long enough with a jam that should have went on all night - George Clinton where were you when we needed you? Maybe it was Chas' fault, just picking out the choice parts of this show... it does leave you begging for more.
But you do get more, One-Eyed Jacks smashes you in the mouth, a beer drinkin' hell raisin' rock'n roll party song that leads into a wild version of C'Mon Feel The Noize. Girls rock your boys!! If you're not up & dancing, check your pulse you may be dead.
Slade was known for their goofiness, from song misspellings to party lyrics, and for a phase Noddy had the worst bangs in Rock & Roll history. The running order of their songs were never the same as the album listed; hell-o sometimes a listed song never appeared on the vinyl at all. But they left you breathless, smiling on a bad day, and wanting more. They deserve a place next to the greatest UK bands, from the Beatles to T.Rex and Bowie's Ziggy Stardust.
If you somehow missed them, what a shame for you. Do a friend a favor, turn them on to the group called Slade. My friend (Mike) Stanley did, and I'll forever be in his debt. Take Me Back Home, mate!

    4 out of 5 stars Very good.......2005-09-29

Well, I was lucky enough to get my hand on a Russian version of this album, whcih includes both Alive and Aliv Vol Two in one single disc.

This is one of my favorite live albums ever. It's raw, energetic, with a good se list. Of course, if this had been a double live album it would have been better, because by that time Slade alreay had a very extensive and high quality repertoire.

    4 out of 5 stars A Real Pleasant Suprise!!.......2003-05-29

I picked this up used, not expecting much. Wow! This release is much better than the original Alive release (which seems to contain more crowd noise than music). The most pleasant suprise was the lead guitar. Slade's studio releases always seem to be the weakest in the lead guitar departmant. They start out with great riffs and then fade into redundant oblivion. Not here...riffs galore, Hill's guitar really rocks. Plus Noddy's singing is terrific. This release reminded me of a British version of ZZ TOP's "Fandango" (The "live" side one for those who remember it on vinyl). If you have "Slade Alive" and are considering this purchase, do it. This is a better album and stands up much better over the passage of time. Plus, you won't find yourself ejecting it after only one spin.

4 out of 5 stars A great band in transition.......2001-01-17

I loved this CD because it included cuts I had never heard before and preserved a period in the band's history when they all but disappeared, at least for me. The CD captures Slade after they have fallen from the pinnacle and the choice of songs ("My Baby Left Me", the defiant lyrics of "Be") reflects their struggles. "Mama" and "Noize" sound rushed, as if they are tired of playing old hits. The style is tighter and heavier than their glam sound, a glimpse of the heavy metal they would later adopt. Noddy Holder plays like ZZTop's Billy Gibbons (check out "One Eyed Jacks") and doesn't banter with the crowd as on Slade Alive Vol I. His playing is often better than lead guitarist Dave Hill's, though Hill's guitar work is much improved, despite hitting enough bum notes on the opening "Get On Up" to last a career.

For a lifelong fan, this CD closes a gap and presents a band soldiering on at their trade -- in working class tradition -- despite little chart success. Slade was a proper band and best heard live.

5 out of 5 stars IT FEELS LIKE NEW YEAR'S EVE !.......1999-12-16

BLOW UP SOME BALLOONS, TOSS SOME CONFETTI AND PLAY THIS ALBUM AT MAXIMUM VOLUME AND YOU'LL HAVE A SMALL IDEA WHAT IT WAS LIKE BEING AT A SLADE CONCERT IN 1976-77. THIS WAS SLADE AT THEIR PEAK IN MY OPINION, BATTLING TO STAY IN THE SPOTLIGHT AND GIVING IT THEIR ALL! MANY UNSUNG GEMS FROM THE WHATEVER HAPPENED TO SLADE? LP. UNLIKE THE FIRST ALIVE VOLUME, WHICH WAS RECORDED LIVE IN A STUDIO WITH ONLY A LUCKY HANDFUL OF FANS, THIS OFFERING IS TAKEN FROM ACTUAL SLADE CONCERTS. THE AUDIENCE SING-A-LONG TO EVERYDAY IS NOTHING SHORT OF AMAZING! BUY THIS DISC FOR AULD LANG SYNE & BEFORE IT GOES OUT OF PRINT! CHEERS!

                4 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC... I f you're in your 40s and up!.......2006-10-19

Few days ago, I had a meeting with my High School mates (class of '76). Among others, I brought this CD and also "Deep Purple- Made in Japan (Live)". My buddies got crazy when I played them! Don't expect perfectly-crafted music and recordings, as with Yes or Genesis digitally remastered albums of the 70s.
This is RAW ROCK MUSIC, just for fun and for good memories. Enjoy it!

                5 out of 5 stars Slade Alive.......2005-12-11

I have been listening to this album for over thirty years and it still sounds great. One of the best overlooked live albums in Rock, one I was really happy to finally get on cd. Starts with a cover of "Hear me callin" which begins at a friendly gait and builds to an explosive end. "In like a shot" is a great Slade rocker, simple and to the point with Noddy's vocals cuttin right through. A tender version of "Darlin be home soon" features some nice volume knob swells and great guitar work from Jim Lee. The high point of this album is the "regular finisher" Born to be wild. If The Cult did the lamest cover of this song, Slade did the best. Unbelievable sonic mayhem especially for the time. In short, this is rock and roll as it shoud be done, four guys with the minimum of equipment blastin it out in a small club. How did they stay in tune?

5 out of 5 stars In My Top Five Live.......2005-09-02

I originally bought this album in 1972 I guess. Knew nothing of the band. Bought it because the cover looked boss. But when I brought it home, peeled of the plastic, gently laid it on my turntable, twisted up some red bud and dropped the needle, I was amazed. Noddy is not a screamer. He is a very, very gifted singer. When I first heard "Darling Be Home Soon" I couldn't believe it. It's a masterpiece. When the song is at it's crescendo and Noddy wails "My Darling Be Home Soon" it has to be the finest single vocal line I have ever heard. Many consider this to be the greatest live album ever made. I had the pleasure of seeing them at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago. The opening act was 10 CC. What a strange combo. When they were doing a mike check, I'm not kidding, someone tapped the mike and it sounded like a sonic boom. Imagine what it sounded like when Noddy got on it. They were a party band and that's what comes across on this CD. By the time you're through listening to this album you will know exactly who Slade were and what they were about and you will not soon forget.

                5 out of 5 stars Awesome!!!..........2004-02-22

The title of this brief review IS what this album IS!!!
Take into consideration it was recorded back in 1972 and STILL sounds fresh as a Rock - Rock `n` Roll album.
Recorded in front of an audience at a BBC studio it is a fantastic example of a `live` album, FULL of energy, enthusiasm and some great early tracks/covers - one of them being the last track and the best EVER version of `Born To Be Wild`, check out the ending with a great `endtro` fading into feedback and then fading excellently back in to a great finish.
If you want a GREAT full on album, do not hesitate in getting this one - go on, treat yourself!

5 out of 5 stars The calumnies against the USA re glam rock must stop.......2003-09-18

I purchased the USA, gatefold release of Alive! 30+ years ago. The record was like a breath of fresh air. It kicked all the lousy hippies/folkies that had been forced down people's throats in the .... as they deserved. Slade was actually big in the USA, although the media/revisionists would have you think otherwise. They had several hit singles(Mama..., GudBuy..., plus some that seemed to disappear after a small round of airplay). The problem was that the singles were hard to come by, plus the fact that people usually had the albums, negating the purchase of the singles. The teenfans who liked Slade, a quite popular band among girls(not just glam girls, but all types)as well as boys, tended not to buy singles anyway. As a drummer friend once said re Slade, "AM/FM didn't like 'em, but the people did."

As for Alive!, sure the list was a bit haphazard, a live version of "Cos I Luv You" would have been welcome. Having said that, the album functioned as a fulcrum for teenagers to pry the counterculture from around their necks. It certainly functioned that way for me and my friends. The album was intended to replicate a gig, which it did. Several covers, a fairly recent single(Know Who You Are), the ballad, plus a general party atmosphere made Alive! what it was.

Purchase this, along with their studio album Slayed! featuring the hit "GudBuy T'Jane", plus their cover of the Janis Joplin hit, "Move Over"(You know that I need a woman...), plus their USA single "Let the Good Times Roll/Feel So Fine" later covered by Twisted Sister.

As the adverts for that album said so many years ago,"Get Slayed!, and come to life".
