Smiler for $6.98? .......2006-09-17
Are you kidding? The cover of Dylan's "Girl from the North Country" is worth $6.98!
Solid rock album.......2004-02-24
So many bad reviews have been written about this album, that I had to buy it and find out the truth. I must say that most of the reviews are wrong. This is a very solid early 1970's rock cd. If you like the Faces and the Mercury era Rod albums, you'll have to have this to complete the collection. It isn't as great as Gasoline Alley, but pretty close. This is a fun, loud, last fling record for the Stewart/Wood/ partnership. That is why it is valuable. Rod never sounded this way after leaving Ron Wood and the rest of the Faces....Kenny Jones and Ian McClagen. Great version of Sweet little rock and roller.
ROCKIN RODNEY.......2002-10-02
This is the way Rod should sound! It kicks of with a blistering Sweet little rock'n roller. Farewell a classic song but a small hit when this album first was realeased in 1974. Every nano second on this CD is worth the price. It Rocks and it swings and the ballads are filled with soul. Ron Wood on bass and guitar, original songs by Paul McCartney (Mine for me) and Elton John who also guests on his effort- A thundering Let me be your car. this album should please anyone whose into Rod-Faces-Stones-Elton.........GREAT

Half Smile.......2001-04-05
Smiler is by far the weakest album that Rod Stewart released on the Mercury label. It has some excellent performances, but it is spotty in most spots. The album starts off with a ripping song, "Sweet Little Rock 'N' Roller" but then falls off until his medley cover of Sam Cooke's "Bring It on Home To Me/You Send Me". Mr. Stewart is a major devotee of Mr. Cooke's and he always steps up his level of performance on covers of his songs. "let Me Be Your Car" is an enjoyable number, but he makes a rare, but major, misstep on "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Man". By singing it from a man's point of view, it strips the song of its essence. The rest of the album is up and down. Smiler could have been alot better, but it is not a wasted effort.
A Fine Stewart Effort.......2001-02-02
A nice remaster of a very good album. Notable that it contains the only collaboration between Rod and Paul McCartney to date on the final, McCartney-penned track, "Mine for Me." McCartney also sings beautiful background vocals on this fine tune. The rocking "Let Me Be Your Car" was written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin. The only downfall is that the CD has no bonus tracks - rare for a classic reissue.

Sunny.......2001-02-20
I first listened to this CD in my mom's car...she never likes music very loud, so I was listening to it softly. DON'T do this. It was bland, uninteresting, and I regretted buying it. However, I got home, and put it into my bedroom CD player, and turned the volume up high...Wow! It was suddenly toe-tapping and swingy, and the melodies were sheer perfection (I love those raggy tunes).
My only complaint is the lack of stringed instruments like banjos (albeit not widespread in the repertoire/style for part of the target period) as a good grounding for the airiness of the winds, which seemed to be lacking in places. It's also great percussion, and drums just don't always do the trick.
But anyways, my advice is: turn the volume up--don't even listen to it on headphones--and lose yourself. A delight. :)
Another Dorian winner.......1999-07-22
How does Dorian do it? After a superlative recreation of
(DIS 80107) and
(DIS 80153), they come near to topping them both with
(DIS 93165). Here The New Columbian Brass Band under George Foreman syncopates again (they did the "Coney Island set) with 21 once very popular band tunes ranging from the 1895 "A Kansas Two-Step" to the relatively recent 1920 "Zampede." Not only does it all leave you (i.e., me) breathless at the end, but one might wish for a bit more than the 62 minutes Dorian provides on this CD. I urge you to have both the "Demon Rag" set with the Paragon Ragtime Orchestra and compare it with the sound of this set's band sound. Both are legitimate, both utterly authentic (as far as I can tell), and each complements the other nicely. So if you think your great-greats were still Victorian stick in the muds in the Edwardian age, these discs will show that even they knew how to have a good time. My only complaint is the producers printing the contents over a picture. More and more companies are doing this and it is very annoying. The information inside the booklet, however, is well presented and the illustrations wonderful.

I like Smiler but why is it selling for $1,299???!!!.......2004-11-13
This is far from Rod Stewart's best album. It has three I really love, but several that I always skipped over, and the rest are just okay. I thought it might be nice to pick up a CD to replace my scratchy old vinyl copy, and went into shock at the price. What gives?! I can't believe some record company couldn't reissue this at a reasonable price. I guess if I want to hear it, I'll have to drag out the old turntable and digitize it for my own CD, or just fuggedaboutit. I hope it comes out some time at a reasonable price... guess it's one of those things, like waiting for Tex Avery cartoons to make it onto dvd...
