Willy & The Poor Boys (20 Bit Mastering) [Original recording remastered]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
The Band that Fogerty Built was truly an American phenomenon during their relatively short recording career. Each of their albums, beginning with 1969's Bayou Country, was a Top 40 hit-making machine. Willy & the Poor Boys produced two smashes--"Down on the Corner" (which is about the fictional street group that gave the album its title) and "Fortunate Son," Fogerty's most ferocious political rant. Each CCR LP was a concept collection of sorts, and this one was a tribute to the South, featuring two traditional standards popularized by Leadbelly as well as two instrumentals that made you swear CCR were from New Orleans rather than Oakland, California. --Bill Holdship

Originally released in 1971, Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory was an imaginative film that drew as much inspiration from the leftover vibes (and drugs) of the psychedelic '60s as it did from Roald Dahl's fanciful children's book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. If you doubt it, check out this special 25th anniversary edition of the original soundtrack album, which features lyrics and music by Anthony Newley, who was a major influence on David Bowie and whose work on this film has clearly inspired '90s rockers from Veruca Salt (who took their name from the spoiled rich girl) to the Butthole Surfers (who could easily cover the sinister, trippy "Wondrous Boat Ride". C'mon, everybody, let's sing: "Oompa loompa/Doomp-ity-do/I've got another lesson for you...." --Jim Derogatis

Good, but only if you are a fan of the movie..........2007-07-16
This CD is pretty cool, especially since it has all of the original "Oompa Loompa" songs on it. If you love the movie, you will love the CD. If you aren't a big fan of the music in the movie, don't bother.
Get your own golden ticket..........2007-05-15
This is such a great cd. It has all of the songs from the movie along with snipits of the actors talking during the movie. I would whole heartedly recommend this soundtrack.
All these years later..........2007-05-12
Bought this for my granddaughter who absolutely loves this movie. It was one of my faves as a kid too. She wanted to sing along to the Oompah Loompah songs. This is NOT the best format for that because they are scattered throughout and not all verses are here, but we do listen to this often.
Everything went great........2007-01-04
Well the title says it all. Everything went great. Item arrived fast and was in the condition they said it was. I will buy from them again.
Interesting Music for an Interesting Time in an Interesting Medium.......2006-12-26
"Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" was a 1971 movie-musical adaptation of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," a 1963 children's book written by Roald Dahl, the famed author of children books such as "The Big Friendly Giant," "James and the Giant Peach," "Matilda," "George's Marvelous Medicine," and the sequel to this one, "Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator." The 2006 remake of this film shared it's name with the original book by Dahl, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." The original movie version stayed less true to the book, and in so doing it freed itself up for more creative uses of cinematic effect. And one example of creative discretion they wisely took advantage of was the inclusion of the songs on this soundtrack:
"I've Got a Golden Ticket"
"Cheer Up, Charlie"
"The Candyman"
"Pure Imagination"
"Oompa Loompa"
and "I Want It Now"
This is a pretty good mix of songs for the time (1971) and the medium (film soundtrack). The soundtrack is complimented by the film's strength as a children's movie that attained an almost cult status due to its script, costumes, set design, and cast (especially the lead role of Willy Wonka played by Gene Wilder). The music accompanies all these aspects of the movie very well. However, you have to be in the right mindset in order to enjoy this movie. If you're in the right mood (for example, hungry) the chocolate in this movie just might pull you in for the moment.
I bought the CD because I wanted the option of listening to the music without the movie setting. That way, I could just skip from track to track and listen to the songs without having to rewind or fastforward on my VHS player.
I digress, though. Rent the movie if you haven't seen it.

Too light.......2007-07-09
Great songwriting once again but, as this is not really my preferred genre, I feel the need of something darker. His first album gave me a bit of that and seemed a little more experimental. Albeit part of its charm was the amazing 'Oxygen', the kind of song that may along come around once in a while.
I have nothing against this or him but it just seems to have lost a bit of edge. Perhaps I need to listen to it more.
all that really matters is the music.......2007-05-24
as an avid admirer of many genres - punk, indie, hip-hop, electronica, industrial, whatever - the bottom line for me is the quality of the music. i've seen and heard willy mason before, and this album truly captures his oft-described older than he seems voice, quirky and thoughtful lyrics and fine musicianship. this is an album that i've enjoyed sitting and listening to, and once the lyrcis sink in they tend to follow me around. the music has texture and doesn't lie still as the songs change tempo and his voice and instruments weave in and out. he has some interesting takes on youth, the music industry and society. it's worth your hard earned dollars, so just buy it already, you'll be satisfied.
real genius.......2007-05-10
There aren't many like Willy out there, something you'll truly understand if you are fortunate enough to see him live. But this second album seems to have gotten permanently stuck in my CD player. Willy is a natural storyteller, a fine guitarist. He writes with real power, and possesses wisdom that belies his age. To say that I am impressed with "If the Ocean Gets Rough" is a massive understatement. Willy is the real deal, the kind of talent we hoped still existed. It does, in spades.
Willy Mason gets my feet tapping.......2007-05-06
Willy Mason is an incredibly talented person. His lyrics are inspiring and his music as a whole puts a nice beat into my days. This new albumn rocks. I highly recommend others to check him out and be inspired!
Music like the soul of old Cape Cod.......2007-04-09
This album is cleaner and more refined than his debut. The lyrics are more mature and the songs are more melodic but manage to stay soulful and gritty. They also play a good live show and its only a matter of before they are the headliners. Willys deep voice is complimented by Nina Violets voice and viola. Its the soul of old Cape Cod. Every song on the album is good. Buy this album!

Fogerty.......2007-06-10
Great value. If you are into the 60s' and 70s' you will love this one.
Great CCR record, not so great SACD.......2007-02-26
My advice? Don't waste your time spending big bucks on the SACD version of this great CCR classic. I've listened to it alongside the 20bit K2 mastered version and I actually prefer the K2 version. I've got a lot of SACD's and played both on my Sony SACD player. I can't see the purpose of this realease at all. If it comes down to money I think you will be more than happy with the K2 release. Also, the SACD is not a multi-channel release so you won't find anything new with this mix. Overall as any familar with CCR knows, this is a solid gold 5 star classic. So, any fan of great rock and roll needs to own it. Just don't waste your money on this hybrid SACD release.
Fun rock 'n' roll - not perfect, but worth your money.......2006-11-18
Yes, this IS the album with Fortunate Son, CCR's signature tune, on it. Yes, it's also got Down on the Corner, which charted a good eleven places ahead of Fortunate Son (I'm a dork for knowing that. So what?) even though the former is far better-known. These are the best songs off Willy & the Poor Boys. But most (not all, mind you) of the rest unfairly rests in the shadow of those two tracks. They actually manage to breathe new life into the oft-covered Midnight Special (which has transcended the level of "standard" at this point), thanks to them very much making it their own. It Came Out of the Sky is pretty damn funny; Don't Look Now, a great love song; Side o' the Road, one of their best instrumentals; and Effigy, easily their best extended song. How'd all of these songs disappear? Okay, their cover of Leadbelly's Cotton Fields is far from essential; Poor Boy Shuffle's a bad instrumental; Feelin' Blue, an overlong jam. But this is a solid record overall!
Other stuff to check out.......2006-06-21
I am a huge fan of John Fogerty's solo music and his music with CCR. If you enjoy his roots-rock style then I strongly recommend that you check out the following:
1) 24 Hours A Day by The Bottle Rockets
2) Chooglin': A Tribute To The Songs Of John Fogerty
3) Banjos and Sunshine by Sixty Acres
4) Trace by Son Volt
Look Now.......2006-01-07
As far as I'm concerned, 'Willy & The Poor Boys' represent the very peak of Creedence Clearwater Revival. Simply because they came from classics such as 'Bayou Country' and 'Green River', and even after this album, they would continue with such immaculate collections of prime & pure rock'n'roll as 'Cosmo's Factory' and 'Pendulum'. 'Willy & The Poor Boys' then, is not just the last classic before a sudden fall in quality, but the third in a row of brilliant recordings, that would continue after it, & therefor, it is as far from failure as one gets.
The opener, 'Down On The Corner', is arguably CCR's best song ever. Definently, it was the one that got me hooked on Creedence in the first place, and, together with 'Proud Mary', it seems to be their best known song (it's usually those two that even hiphop-kids here in Denmark know the lyrics to). Anyway, it is a perfectly catching pop song without any of the weaknesses or disposabilities that usually come with too catchy pop. A song well worth the price of the entire Creedence catalogue on its own!
'It Came Out Of The Sky' is one of the most rocking Creedence songs, a great rockabilly/rock'n'roll classic, & arguably a genuine Creedence classic too. The following track, a cover of Leadbelly's 'Cotton Fields' sounds as much as the original Creedence material, that one comes to think of it as one of their own - which is perhaps the greatest triumph of most of CCR's covers, the way they blend into the original material without wreaking havoc.
The jugband blues of 'Poorboy Shuffle' and the middle of the road, but at the same time very very strange 'Feelin' Blue', are both Fogerty originals, strong songs that carry the album on with pride
But it is with 'Fortunate Son' that the next true Creedence classic arrives. As strong as anything Fogerty has ever written, this light rocker is yet another amazing item in the vein of 'Green River' and the later 'Run Through The Jungle'.
The utterly gorgeous love song, 'Don't Look Now', is a somewhat overlooked gem, absolutely as good as the previous track, & thus the third invaluable jewel on the album. It is followed by Creedence's take on the traditional 'The Midnight Special', which, like 'Cotton Fields', works extremely well, becoming a Creedence stample, without betraying its original form.
The album ends with two more strong Fogerty tracks, 'Side O' The Road' and 'Effigy', not as strong as the three classics on the album, but easily strong enough to bring an end to this most outstanding record, that only becomes more amazing when you discover that Creedence put out five of these undying gemstones over the course of two years...
The first album of theirs you buy, the last you stop listening to... oh, you'll never stop listening to it!

Hard to Get Better Than This.......2007-02-01
If you love musicals with characters that are not one-dimensionally self-involved--If you love musicals without screeching sopranos and tons of special effects--If you love musicals with dramatic, realistic story lines, then this one's for you.
Simple and straight forward, this one's aims straight for the gut--without drippy sentiment.
The recurring 'Just Like Marilyn Monroe' is beautiful torture.
Try it. You won't be disappointed.
Beautiful!.......2007-01-20
We visited the musical in the London Phoenix Theatre in December 2006. The performance was wonderful, so we decided to buy the cd via Amazon. The performance on the cd is very good as well with actors who have almost resembling voices. It gives a very good impression of what happened on stage.
fantastic musical.......2006-09-18
BLOOD BROTHERS, playwright Willy Russell's stinging indictment on the Thatcher-governed years in Britain, has come to be regarded as a modern classic and with very good reason. Willy Russell's music and lyrics perfectly inhabit the locale and themes of the piece. The story revolves around twin boys, Eddie and Mickey, who were separated shortly after birth and go on to live polar-opposite lifestyles. Their mother, known only as Mrs Johnstone, is plunged into every parent's worst nightmare, when one brother unknowingly kills his twin... The story later explores the ramifications of the event as well as the aftermath in store for Mrs Johnstone.
BLOOD BROTHERS had been staged several times in the years before this particular production, most notably in 1983 (the World Premiere in Liverpool), but the show took a while to achieve a following. It wasn't until 1987 that a new touring production decided to settle for an extended run in London, and BLOOD BROTHERS began to make it's mark. Starring Kiki Dee in the demanding lead role of Mrs Johnstone, featuring Con O'Neill and Robert Locke as Mickey and Eddie (with Warwick Evans as the Narrator), this cast of BLOOD BROTHERS is one of the best recorded for disc.
Songs like "Marilyn Monroe", "Tell Me It's Not True", "Bright New Day" and "That Guy", are draped over the characters like second skins, they are so powerful in exploring characterisation and meaning. Musically in BLOOD BROTHERS, nothing happens without a reason, and this score definitely improves with repeated listening. Well worth your time.
So bad it's funny........2006-08-18
Blood Brothers is one of the most hilarious shows of modern msical theatre. The only problem is that it is a drama. It's overindulgent, melodramatic, and really quite silly at times. However not everything about it is bad. The music, if repetative, is mostly quite good, and occasionally very good. The actors do a good job with the material, and the narrator would be brilliant if the script would sustaine him. However one thing makes this show fall flat on it's face: the lyrics. Some of them are just over-dramatic, other are ridiculous, such as:
And he'd sleep every night in a bed of his own,
He wouldn't get into fights, he'd leave matchs alone
Now I'm not saying not to buy this CD, just be prepared for a trully hilarious drama.
Its OK.......2006-08-03
This musical is nothing special. I own two different recordings of it, and this is the better of the two. The lyrics in the show are nice although plain. The accents in this recording arent the best, but they seem to be what people mimic. The orchestration of this show is very nice, and its worth the listen. As far as songs, the narrator sings the most, and hes definitly the part to play. Favorite Song: "I'm Not Saying a Word"

Album Description
With an accomplished touring history working with artists as diverse as Paul Simon, Jethro Tull, Sting, Jeff Beck and Tori Amos, Willy Porter's latest CD finds him at home in his own musical world. Equal parts muscle, intimacy and atmosphere, it's the guitarist/ singer/ songwriter's most fully realized effort to date. Recorded with a crisp four-piece backing band, and mixed by Grammy winning Producer/Engineer Neil Dorfsman (Dire Straits, Sting...) Available Light is Porter's sixth album, and first on his own imprint Weasel Records.

Wow!.......2007-07-13
Willy does it again. Once again Willy uses his amazing song writing wit and style and plays great music on another great cd. Anyone who knows Willy knows this will be a good one and if you don't, well give it a listen, you will not be disappointed. In person he is so fun and this cd is a great reflection of his in person performance. Fun and talented to the core, Willy is a great singer-songwriter.
Consistency=good songs+production........2007-01-04
Willy Porter is best experienced at one of his live performances but, as far as studio recordings go, this a beauty!! I have all of his CD releases to date, and it appears to be a cohesive "band" vibe happening here, just by the sound and production quality alone. But, don't be mistaken, the songs are as usual, first-class!! Bravo, Willy. See ya on stage.
It's Willy Again - Only Different.......2006-09-21
If you're a fan of Willy Porter - and who isn't?! - you'll recognize his abilities and soul poured into each track on this album. He's taken a slight departure from his previous releases in that there is an overall sense of melancholy and three instrumentals. The feel of the album is understood, given the loss of his father during the recording and clearly it's Willy's way of expressing his feelings of the situation, notably with "Me and MY Old Man". The last track, "Where are my keys?", is a first for Willy by going a little techno with a drum machine and synth, almost a pop/dance track. The childhood recollection "Loose Gravel" FINALLY makes an appearance on a studio album, and "Sleepy Little" recalls Willy's earlier work with a style reminiscent of one of my first CD's, "Windham Hill Records Guitar Sampler" from the 80's. "Hairball" has a great Leo Kottke feel - the only `bad' part of that song is its less then 2 minutes. I'm sure it could easily become another long jam like "Roadbone" when he's on stage. "One More September" took me a while to realize that it's about 9/11, well after my eyes were welling up. Thanks Willy, you've done it again. See you at the next show!

CCR's Last Album Of The 60's.......2004-08-21
Willy And The Poor Boys(1969). Creedence Clearwater Revival's Fourth Album.
Much like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, Creedence Clearwater Revival was capable of shelling out an album every few months and enjoying immense commercial and critical success. With three multi-platinum albums behind them, Creedence Clearwater Revival released 'Willy And The Poor Boys'. In late 1969, 'Willy And The Poor Boys' hit #1 on the Albums Chart and the resulting singles, "Fortunate Son" and "Down On The Corner" became huge hits for the band. As always, CCR's careful blend of Blues, Folk, Country, 50's Rock, and Classic Rock helped the band became sensations in all kinds of music, and led by Fogerty's gravelly anti-pop vocals and wailing guitar, it's no surprise the band has gone down as legends. So, is 'Willy And The Poor Boys' another solid release from Creedence Clearwater Revival, or a career misstep? Read on to find out!
Track Ratings-
Down On The Corner- A big hit, "Down On The Corner" is a fun rocker that blends a catchy bassline with a Country/Rock beat. It's unlikely you won't be humming this to yourself!
It Came Out Of The Sky- You'd think this is Elvis or Buddy Holly, but you'd be wrong. CCR takes a stab at 50's rock, and with Fogerty's energetic guitar riff and humorous lyrics, you can't help but like it!
Cotton Fields- It's hard to believe these guys were from California! CCR blends an interesting mix of Country, Folk, and down-home Southern Rock to create a catchy little number.
Poorboy Shuffle- A harmonica instrumental. While it may just be filler, at least it's interesting.
Feelin' Blue- Much like a song you'd come to expect from B.B. King or Eric Clapton, CCR dishes out a bluesy rocker, and with Fogerty's addictive guitar melody and vocals, it's no surprise this is another winner. "Feelin' Blu-who-who-blue"!
Fortuneate Son- A direct protest against the Vietnam War, "Fortunate Son" spoke to millions after it became a huge hit. CCR adds a shaper edge to the song, and Fogerty's angry vocals remind me of heavier acts like Lynyrd Skynyrd or pre-Stevie Nicks Fleetwood Mac. It's no wonder this song became a huge hit....it rules!
Don't Look Now- Much like Bob Dylan, CCR blends Folk and Rock on "Don't Look Now", although it seems a little generic along with the other tracks. Not bad, just average.
The Midnight Special- Much slower and considerably quiter than most of CCR's music, "The Midnight Special" is still an energetic Blues-Rock song fulled to the brim with catchy vocals and guitarwork. A good song, just a little slower than most of CCR's stuff, although I wouldn't call this a "ballad".
Side O' The Road- A guitar driven, Fogerty produced instrumental. Need I say more? Fogerty shows why he's one of the 60's best guitarist, ranking right up there with Clapton and Hendrix. In case you didn't know, Creedence Clearwater Revival does have a few Progressive Rock songs on each album, and these last two songs fit the bill.
Effigy- 'Willy And The Poor Boy's longest track, "Effigy" is almost twice as long as every track. Much like the Doors or Iron Butterfly, "Effigy" is a casual mix of Psychadelic Folk Rock, mixed with Progressive elements and excellent musicianship. Fogerty + guitar = bliss!
Overall, 'Willy And The Poor Boys' is another winner from Creedence Clearwater Revival, one of the few bands from the Late 60's-Early 70's that I actually enjoy! Blending the catchy pop hooks of the Beatles and the instrumental talent of Cream, not to mention various influences from 50's Rock and Progressive Rock, CCR never fails to deliver! If you won't good, clean, fun, addictive, and enjoyable classic rock, look no further!
Killer Kuts- "Down On The Corner", "Fortunate Son", "Side O' The Road", and "Effigy".
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO FANS OF CLASSIC ROCK, BLUES, FOLK, AND CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL! THESE GUYS RULE, YOU HAVE TO CHECK THEM OUT!

One of CCR's Most Musically, Lyrically Varied Albums.......2004-04-29
By the time they released "Willy and the Poor Boys" in November 1969, Creedence Clearwater Revival were one of America's top attractions, and one of the most unlikely. By soldiering against the grain of late-60s psychedelia and drug-induced poetry sung by drugged out hippies, CCR (along with The Band) possessed a sound that was original and in stark contrast to the psychedelic revolution, but somehow fate gave them success and made them one of the most popular voices of that generation. This, CCR's fourth album, embodies the magic that made them both popular and artistically dignified at the same time, but it is also an easy contender for the group's most varied release (competing with "Pendulum" for that title).
John Fogerty's songs were as good as ever, and here they advanced forward just a bit in a mix of Southern creoles that seemed to come straight from a laid-back bayou somewhere in Louisiana (though Creedence actually hailed from California), but now CCR appeared to be addressing a generation. The group keeps their down home roots in tact with the undisputed classic `Down on the Corner' which pays homage to music and good times, with Fogerty's references to the individual members of CCR, using the nicknames "Rooster," "Poorboy" and "Blinky." Two left-center (for 1969) selections `Poorboy Shuffle' and `Side O' the Road' add to this feeling, not to mention flawless blues covers `Cotton Fields' and `The Midnight Special,' but Fogerty had deeper things in mind; the group rips through `It Came Out of the Sky,' a rollicking fictional spoof on the mayhem of politics, with references to a mindless Hollywood, a story-hungry media, and Ronald Reagan (or "Ronnie the Popular" as he is called here). But `Don't Look Now (It Ain't You Or Me)' is much more serious, a poetic and frank series of questions posed to a generation, with Fogerty asking "Who'll make the promise that you don't have to keep?" and sadly concluding "It ain't you or me." The album's most famous song, `Fortunate Son' is a testament to the band's unlikely rise to acclaim; it's ironic that one of the best attacks on the draft did not come from a group of hippies, but from a band that embraced an image of blue-collar bayou boys. The album's closer, the unjustly overlooked `Effigy' rings doom and despair, a portrait of the turmoil in America in the 60s, but can apply even to today's dire outlook.
When their previous album "Green River" established them as a successful singles act, critics probably thought there was no way Creedence could top it; but to their pleasant surprise, "Willy and the Poor Boys" took care of that job, but it would surely not be the end; the next year's "Cosmo's Factory" would be even more successful, proving a band could go against the grain and keep themselves creative and original.
ONE OF THE BIG 4.......2003-08-07
THIS CD IS A CLASSIC.CCR MADE 4 GREAT CD,BAYOU COUNTRY,COSMOS FACTORY GREEN RIVER AND THIS CLASSIC WILLIE AND THE POORBOYS.JUST CHECK OUT THE POORBOY SHUFFLE AND IT GOES RIGHT INTO FEELIN BLUE.WHAT A GREAT COMBO,BUT THE WHOLE CD IS GREAT.THE 20BIT REMASTERING IS REALLY WORTH THE MONEY,BECAUSE THE SOUND IS EXCELLENT.
One of CCR's two or three greatest albums.......2003-01-06
This album comprises so many different styles of music that it's hard to believe it actually works. The guitar-driven power of "It Came Out Of The Sky", the minimalist, folkish "Down On The Corner", the eerie, minor-key "Effigy", the thundering drums and harsh, angry lyrics of "Fortunate Son", the rockabilly spiritual "Don't Look Now", and Huddie Ledbetter's proto-country lament "The Midnight Special" really shouldn't belong on the same album, but somehow it all feels like genuine CCR, and blues, country, folk, rock, and New Orleans-style R&B blends smoothly into one of the all-time great rock n'roll records.
With most other bands, you'll just need one good compilation and you'll have all of their really good stuff.
With Creedence Clearwater Revival you'll need their entire recorded output.

Kunzel does it yet again!.......2004-11-23
Kunzel & The Cincinnati Pops do a great job everytime, and this is no exception. I'm telling you, if you ever thought that purely intrumental/orchestral was unattractive, this will change your mind. Never a disappointment!
Movie Music.......2002-12-12
If you love that music from all those movies you've seen, then this is the CD you want! It is fantastic!! I want more!! I hope Erich Kunzel will come out with some music from older movies and maybe some TV programs. Listening to his music is better than watching the movie.
More than Beautiful!!.......2002-12-11
This is the absolute best CD they ever put together! And that is saying a lot as we are very picky about what music we like. This is the kind of music that makes you 'feel' deeply. It encourages you to dream big and love living! Forget the grooves, drums and bangs and listen to something incredibly beatiful! You won't be sorry for the money invested in this one bit of sanity in such a hectic world.
This is the one you should own.......2002-10-27
If you are looking for just one solid collection of memorable movie themes, this is it. Other CDs mix marches and fanfares with quieter tracks, which makes for a jarring listening experience at times. This CD, however, has a consistent feel all the way through. Melodic, calming, and, best of all, interesting. These movie tracks weren't selected simply for their sound, but also because they are GOOD. You get the best of the best: James Horner, Alan Silvestri, Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams, Ennio Morricone, and Randy Edelman.
You'll never get tired of this!.......2001-05-30
This CD is absolutely one of the best of Eric Kunzel! I have a passion for movie scores/soundtracks and i must say he did a really good job on this. Listen to this and close your eyes and you'll find yourself immersed in the movies from which the music was taken from. I had my friends listen to this and they all got copy or will get a copy. If you're into this kind of music, believe me you'll keep on playing it, again and again.

Nailed It!.......2007-05-06
This is Blake's finest leader project yet, capturing a cohesive flow that his previous records hinted at but never quite nailed. His compositions all have a natural, if at times edgy feel, and his use of vamps are plentiful and tasteful: here a guitar solo, here a subtly complimented drum solo, here Seamus telling it how it is right up till the end of the tune on "Jupiter Line" and "Badlands".
Of course the all-star cast does this music extreme justice. Stewart's perfect pocket and always improvisatory grooves compliment LeFleming's rock-solid simplified bass lines. Kikoski and Lund offer a unique blend and the type of conversational duet rarely heard of in doubled up comping. Blake's writing, particularly on "The Jupiter Line", fills out the sound nicely and makes full use of both chord instruments throughout the album, neither getting in the other's way.
What really pushes this cut over the edge is its unique sound and its highly conversational aspect. You'll hear old jazzers talk about how things aren't how they used to be, how the great quar- and quintets of the past captured a sound that isn't found anymore. When listening to a track like "Badlands" one is reminded of the sound that Coltrane's famouse quartet captured with "Giant Steps": a soothing yet powerful blend unlike any found elsewhere in music. One feels as if everyone is always on the same page, and there is no question of the honesty and ferocity oozing from all involved.
In the end this is a huge success for an ever-changing artist telling his story. A more primal, traditionally-rooted Seamus playing beautiful melodies is exactly what I was looking for, and he delivers on all accounts.

Great soundtrack for a great movie.......2006-03-25
First of all, Free Willy is one of my favorite movies, and one that I enjoy watching again and again. An emotional tale about the impeccable friendship between a boy and a whale, it is the best family movies I have watched, along with 'Mrs Doubtfire' and 'Spider-Man 2.'
I would like to comment on the theme song of the movie 'Will you be there' by Michael Jackson, whose passionate vocals accompany powerful - and meaningful lyrics, bursting with emotion, is a wonderful song. The lyrics, and the way it is sang, show relentless desire to have someone to just 'be there,' reflecting the unbreakable relationship between the orphan Jessie and his loyal and famous killer whale Willy. The song could not have been more appropriate to the story line.
The other songs are good, but don't come close to 'Will you be there.' Hence bringing the score down to 4. Nvertheless, a brilliant soundtrack.
In the end, Willy is once again released into the sea in a tearful finale. And the movie shows how valuable friendships are. So do the songs.
Free Willy Soundtrack.......2005-09-05
I bought the soundtrack for my 3 year old Son Collin. He loves watching the music video of Michael Jackson singing, "Will You Be There." He dances, sings and puts on quite a show for all our family and friends. The music is wonderful and sounds great on the CD. I have to bring his portable CD player with us on trips and he makes sure that I have the Free Willy Soundtrack CD with me on the way out. I would recommend the CD for anyone that likes the music in the movie!
Soundtrack is Excellent!.......2005-02-26
I love this CD, it makes you feel like you are watching the movie all over again! The Main title music is absolutely fabulous!
only 3 good songs on here!.......2001-03-18
I used to have this CD and the only good songs on it are Michael Jackson's will you be there, NKOTB's- Keep on smilin and the song by 3T
Great Musical Score, Poor Bands.......2000-07-23
I just picked up Free Willy today, and I have very mixed feelings about it. I, for one got the CD for the musical score, but hoped the songs would be at least good enough where I could listen to them The only song that is entertaining on this CD is Michael Jackson's "Will you be there" But why do you have to put it on twice, when essentially, it's the same exact thing! The rest of the bands on here are just horrendous, and when it comes to tracks 2-5, you might as well just skip it. The thing that keeps this CD from being 1 star, is the wonderful work by composer Basil Poledouris. Although there are only a few main themes to the music, they are all magical. They are classical, yet Poledouris is able to make them snappy too. Perhaps, the recording studio should have considered to put all the music he did on here, instead of these pathetic things called bands. If you are looking to buy this CD for the score, buy it at once. If you are looking to get it for the bands, I suggest you look somewhere else.
