A Great Find.......2005-11-05
I've been looking for this release for sometime and finally found it at the Austin Record Convention recently. To be honest I bought it for "White Summer" and "Dazed and Confused". Don't turn off the CD player at the end of "Dazed and Confused" because this is a 25 minute song - at the 15:30 mark there is a sonic psychadellic thing going on - possibly something looped and played backwards? Be sure to have your water pipe or a fatty available for this onslaught.
I like all the tracks except for "10 Little Indians" - too psychadellic for me.
I wasn't paying attention to "I'm A Man" when I first heard it on the CD, but on the video you can see Page do a great bow solo at the end. The whole video is great - nothing like what I expected.
If you pop the second CD in the CD player there is a 25 minute interview that is pretty cool also.
I would recommed this new or used. 5 Stars!!
Yardbirds - 'Cumular Limit' (Pilot).......2004-02-21
Wanted to review this 2-CD release in reverse order.Disc 2 is a video CD of a 16-minute segment from a 1967 German TV show 'Beat Beat Beat'.The band rips through "Shapes Of Things","Happening Ten Years Time Ago","Over,Under,Sideways,Down" and truly an ass-kicking version of "I'm A Man".Even though it's in black and white,it's a MUST have for any Yardbirds fan.Disc 1 has the same four tunes as disc 2,but obviously the audio portion plus some TOTALLY different/unheard versions of "White Summer","Glimpses" and "Dazed And Confused"(interesting to hear Keith Relf providing the vocals rather than Robert Plant).Added for good measure are a couple of tunes, that as far as I know are exclusive to this release,"Avron Knows","Taking A Hold On Me" and "You Stole My Love".Includes nice 12-page informative full color booklet with never before seen photos and text.A great find.
feel like a mouse but act like a cat !.......2002-08-26
Back in 1985 the local radio station was playing a tribute to the Yardbirds,
The one song I was taken back by was the song "Dazed and confused " Which is on this CD !!Which I thought was only a Led Zep tune , I was aware that Jimmy Page was the Last lead guitar player with the Yardbirds , But still it was interesting to hear it since I never heard the song before except by Led Zep!
There are two CD's here The second CD is a video and you will need to install Quicktime Player which is included on this CD to down load in order to watch it on your computer if you play the CD you will hear the interview .The video is black and white and play back is excellent !
The first CD is the concert and extra tracks
Also included is a bookelt of the band with pictures The music hear is of the later Yardbirds and not the top 40
This is a great CD to add to any collecton
Enjoy!
Yardbirds at Their Best.......2002-08-11
It was great to hear Yardbird songs when Jimmy Page was lead guitarist. These songs you rarely hear on the radio. I was impressed with the "lost" songs from the spring 1968 sessions. Most "lost" songs should stay lost. The album was truly a rocker and you can clearly hear that the Jimmy Page sessions were precursors to Led Zeppelin. I took off one star because Of the poor quality of the live set in the beginning and the interview on the second disc. Both were unlistenable, perhaps due to recording techniques of the time. All in all a terrific album.
The Yardbirds are eternal.......2002-05-14
I gave the Cumular Limit CD a 4 rating because(a small infraction),it did not include a song that would overshadow the "dazed" track so highly praised on the review board..I am refering to the long lost track "KNOWING THAT I'M LOSING YOU" AKA "TANGERINE",that was originally supposed to be included on this fanstastic CD...
It leaves the listener a little disappointed and hungry with knowledge on what this missing track would have sounded like! Thanks to Mr Page(Read the revised Ultimate Rave up book for the reason),This Cd is very historic to the Yardbirds/Zep fans around the world as a document to the world of the psychedelic/Hard Rock genre that was taking off during the late 60's.. I actually like Cumular Limit better than the BBC cd which to me sounded too clean and refined(The yardies were really a prototypical nascent heavy-metal group),these last recording before the unfortunate split demonstrate the sheer talent and power of what direction the band was heading in.The Yardies Little Games album was a disappointment, but listen to "Smile on me","Think about it" "You stole my love" and "Never Mind" simply amazing! eventhough most of the tracks are of unfinished quality..The Yardies have always fancinated me,I prefer the later stuff opposed to Clapton and Beck(Clapton wasn't very polished at that time and Becks playing wasn't as raunchy as it could have been),I also don't understand why the video of Dazed wasn't included on this cd?THE SONG ALONE IS WORTH THE PRICE OF THE CD but the video would have been a nice accompiant to the song...If you like the 'pop' sound of the group, start off with Rodger the Engineer,if you like the heavier darker Psych, then check out Cumular Limit! Maybe one day Tangerine will be included, provided Pagey relents....

Yardbirds revealed - not Dazed or Confused!.......2003-06-09
The Yardbirds Cumular Limit compilation is a revelation. It fills in the gap between the Little Games lp of 1967 and the classic Led Zeppelin I of late 1968. This compilation reveals that in the intervening period the Yardbirds were an awesome psychadelic blues rock four piece, featuring Jimmy Page on guitar, Keith Relf on vocals and harmonica, Jim McCarthy on drums and Chris Dreja on bass. The double cd mixture of live tracks, especially Dazed and Confused from March 1968, with hereto unreleased studio gems such as Avron Knows and Spanish Blood, makes this compilation a must have for all Yardbirds and Led Zeppelin fans. The video of a 1967 live performance in Germany is also a gem. As Relf states in the accompanying live interview, the band concentrated on the music and live performance, to the detriment of singles and playing the "pop" game. It is for this reason that they remain so popular today. The Eric Clapton Yardbirds was different to the Jeff Beck Yardbirds, whilst Cumular Limit reveals that the Jimmy Page Yardbirds was more than the ... final singles forced upon them by Mickie Most. Perhaps one day a decent live album featuring some of their performances from 1967-8 will appear and forever confirm that the Yardbirds was one of the greatest most influential bands of the sixties.
Yardbirds with Jimmy Page are mind-blowing!.......2001-04-24
This CD set is without a doubt the best Yardbirds album ever, even better than _Roger_The_Engineer_, my next favorite. Jimmy's guitar will totally blow your mind and leave you wondering, "How does he do that?" "Avron Knows" is a brilliant, biting indictment of Timothy Leary's "Turn on, tune in, drop out" philosophy. Jimmy's guitar solo is beyond brilliant, foreshadowing his work with Led Zeppelin and proving that even at this early stage in his career, Jimmy Page is quite clearly _the_ Guitar God. This fact is driven home by the breathtakingly beautiful acoustic work on "Spanish Blood", which reminded me of Jimmy's totally amazing acoustic work on Zep's "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You", yet another awe-inspiring piece by the most talented guitarist ever. Also included are an irresistible version of the Yardbirds'"Tinker Tailor Soldier Sailor", a version of "Over Under Sideways Down" that totally rocks with a guitar solo that would eat any other guitarist for lunch, and an instrumental number, "You Stole My Love", which I'm sure will cause every other guitarist to turn green with envy at the sheer extent of Jimmy's talent. Add to that a dazzling early version of "Dazed and Confused" in which His Guitarness changes music forever by bowing the guitar and the hypnotic, trance-inducing seduction of "Glimpses", and you'll understand why Pete Townshend smashes guitars in frustration. The second disc is a video of the Yardbirds on the German TV show "Beat Beat Beat". The quality of the video is wonderful, and the sound quality is as good as can be expected, given a standard computer's audio system. This video offers a fantastic look at The Yardbirds in action circa 1968 which is, in my opinion, invaluable. In addition, Jimmy Page makes two things quite clear through his truly amazing guitar playing- first, that guitarists fall into two categories, Jimmy Page and everyone else; and second, that his awe-inspiring musical ability is equalled only by his splendid, elegant yet decidedly masculine beauty. The guitar playing on this album is truly magnificent and I would recommend it to anyone who likes The Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Jimmy Page, or any type of guitar music, especially Rock & Roll! This album is guaranteed to blow your mind!
Just one more thing about Cumular Limit.......2001-03-18
Other comments offer good descriptions of this CD. In addition to the video on the 2nd CD, some in depth radio interviews are hidden in it (put the CD in a regular stereo player to listen).
The Yardbirds' Flame Out.......2000-10-04
That I have been unable to go without listening this CD for one day since it arrived in the mail I think says something about my fondness for it. It is a mixed treasure trove chockfull of rough diamonds for those Yardbirds fanatics who are willing to make the extra effort to hunt it down. If you're new to the band, I suggest you invest in GREATEST HITS or ROGER THE ENGINEER instead. I already had a copy of the BEAT BEAT BEAT performances on video, but the quality of the visual CD included here knocks spots off that, and the inclusion of the Keith Relf interview is a nice touch, especially the cocky way he introduces "Over Under Sideways Down." Obviously the giddy German teens think the boys are "vunderbar," and the way the host alternates between fluid German and fluid English is pretty amazing, even though he is a complete and utter geek. The band cooks on these tracks, especially the volcanic version of "I'm A Man". Relf dominates the set with his magnificent Swinging London pop star moves; during "Shapes of Things" Jim McCarty tosses his drumstick, Moon-style, only to have it come flying back, hitting him on the head; Chris Dreja has only two close ups, but he rocks out on the bass throughout; Jimmy Page's guitar playing is aggressive, but sloppy (he's off-key during the "Shapes..." solo; face it Page fans, he was always undisciplined as a live player) - note how he plays through "I'm A Man" with a broken A string. The LITTLE GAMES alternate takes aren't that compelling, except for Relf's "Glimpses" demo, which sounds stunning even in its embryonic form. The unearthed tracks, however, are a revelation. "Avron Knows," sounds like the Seeds on hyperdrive, though Page's climactic solo goes on too long. "Spanish Blood" has a lovely atmosphere, goosed by Page's delicate acoustic playing. McCarty's poem is listenable in a change-of-pace kind of way, and his deadpan expletive at the fade is a howl. The drummer's attempt at singing on "Taking A Hold On Me" isn't too bad either, that is until he hilariously loses his way on the final verse. Page's riffing here definitely presages Zep. "My Baby" is Relf's best vocal performance on the CD, backed by Page's wah-wah awashings. But the stunner here is "Dazed and Confused," which is worth the price of admission alone. The Yardbirds' version exploits the song's inherent paranoia to a frenzied extreme. It's far more effective than Led Zeppelin's heavy-handed sexplotiative version. And yes, it was McCarty who found the song from Jake Holmes (Ever hear the original version? It's pretty creepy). Relf's gorgeous howl during the bowed guitar bit is a marvelous touch, and his harmonica is even more effective than Page's soloing. This track proves the Yardbirds were truly a great BAND, and not just a footnote in Jimmy Page's overhyped career. I could have done without the interminable 10 plus minutes of "De Lane Lea Lee" though. The booklet is a treat, boasting incredible photography of the band's final days along with Greg Russo's meticulously detailed and enthusiastic liner notes. If you're a fan of the band, treat yourself - there are some lovely surprises to be heard.
Time to reasess.......2000-09-24
Critics have often given Page's tenure with the 'birds short shrift. Well, it's time to reasess Jimmy's time with the band. CUMULAR LIMIT is a very frustrating CD in some ways, but ultimately a revelation.
The band is in all its psychedelic glory on these two CDs. The first CD provides alternate takes on some tunes, while also shining the light of day on some other tunes that have never been available from their final studio session. AVRON KNOWS is a fine mod-pop tune. The backing track of YOU STOLE MY LOVE shows some great riffing by Page. Unfortunately, a vocal was never recorded, leaving the listener wanting more. SPANISH BLOOD is an interesting curio, but not essential.
The highpoint of the CD, however, is a French t.v. performance of DAZED AND CONFUSED. In the 'birds hands, this tune was a psychedelic masterpiece, not the cheesy metal anthem it became with Zeppelin. Along with HAPPENINGS TEN YEARS TIME AGO, THINK ABOUT IT and the Pretty Things' DEFECTING GRAY, DAZED is English psychedelia at its best. Worth buying the CD for this alone. Unfortunately, Relf's vocals are miked to the front, obscuring some of Jimmy's marvelous fretwork. McCarty also shines on this version. His drumming is more powerful than the version on LIVE YARDBIRDS! FEATURING JIMMY PAGE, but just as fluid.
Another frustrating thing about this CD is that apparently the 'birds version of TANGERINE was to be included. Drummer Jim McCarty hinted at this in an interview several months ago. Unfortunately, it's not here. One wonders why, Mr. Page. Combining the best tracks on this CD with the best of LITTLE GAMES would be the best way to hear Jimmy Page's tenure with the band. Hint, hint, Greg Russo!
The second CD is a live performance on German t.v. that you can watch on your computer. All in all, this is a worthy release, indeed.
