Green River (20 Bit Mastering) [Original recording remastered]

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
Remarkably, this is the third studio album Creedence Clearwater Revival released in 1969! During that stunning burst, John Fogerty could do no wrong. Green River isn't as chock-full of CCR standards as the record that followed it in 1970 (Cosmo's Factory), and, at 30 minutes, it's briefer than its rather brief predecessor (Willy & the Poorboys). Still, this is economy at its best. The title track, "Lodi," and "Bad Moon Rising" are all indelibly etched into the memory banks of classic-rock fans, while "Commotion" and "Cross-Tie Walker" are perfect swamp-rock complements. "The Night Time Is the Right Time" is one more in a series of spot-on Fogerty covers. And "Wrote a Song for Everyone" manages to be both rarefied and down to earth in the same breath--which is really CCR in a nutshell. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars Fogerty.......2007-06-10

Great value. If you are into the 60s' and 70s' you will love this one.

4 out of 5 stars Good Product.......2007-01-09

I ordered the CD as a Christmas gift for my dad. It took longer then expected to get here but overall it was a good experience. He liked the CD. It was in good shape and he was happy with it.

5 out of 5 stars When Fogerty's angry, I'm happy - he makes better music that way........2006-11-04

Let's face it, John Fogerty was NOT in a good mood when CCR recorded Green River. No matter what the idyllic title track may lead to believe, this is an enraged, paranoid, defeated record. Not only that, it's an excellent engraged, paranoid, defeated record, loaded with some of the group's best hits. I'd go with the best song being the natural-disaster warning Bad Moon Rising (which, contrary to popular belief, had NOTHING to do with bathrooms on the right). Not to discount the other songs, though. The title track is a favorite of mine, and as I said one of the few songs this disc that's not angry. Even then, it's melancholy. Same with Lodi, a song about a musician payin' dues. Commotion is another warning song, and it's also first-rate. Plus we get a couple of the group's best album tracks: Tombstone Shadow and especially Wrote a Song for Everyone, the latter being my second-favorite on the disc. The album does fall apart on a couple tracks, though: Cross-Tie Walker is at the level of some of Bayou Country's fillers; Night Time is the Right Time throws off the mood and showcases awful faux doo-wap backing vocals that must be heard to be believed. But whatever - this is still CCR's best.

5 out of 5 stars Creedence Hit the Big Time .......2006-08-30

When I first heard this album in 1969. it was on vinyl. A friend had just purchased it and had just unwrapped the plastic that was on it. He placed it on the turntable and within three notes of the first track (Green River) the place was rocking.

This album was a keeper then and still is today.

5 out of 5 stars Other stuff to check out.......2006-06-21

I am a huge fan of John Fogerty's solo music and his music with CCR. If you enjoy his roots-rock style then I strongly recommend that you check out the following:
1) 24 Hours A Day by The Bottle Rockets
2) Chooglin': A Tribute To The Songs Of John Fogerty
3) Banjos and Sunshine by Sixty Acres
4) Trace by Son Volt

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Rock 'n' Roll. For real........2004-11-17

I'm still buzzing after having seen Mr. Fogerty's performance at the Beacon Theater in NYC just a day or so ago. He still has the chops, still has the fire. He performed a number or three from this album and all was well with the world.

If you want a genuine rock 'n' roll album then look not further. Guitars, bass, drums. That's it. That's all you need. The roots. Think you can handle it?

I've owned Green River in one form or another since it came out back in '69 and I'll carry it around till that tombstone casts its shadow on me.

Ya'll ought to check it out.

    4 out of 5 stars CCR's Third best.......2004-06-14

Creeedence Clearwater Revival produced 4 outstanding albums. Their best, from my personal perspective, was 'Bayou Country', released early in 1969. 'Green River' is their third best, released in the midst of the Woodstock Festival in August of 1969. Amazingly, before the curtain set on 1969, the band produced 'Willy and the Poor Boys', their fourth best effort. In 1970 'Cosmo's Factory', the album many would claim to be their greatest, but which I would place number two, hit the shelves.

There are two classics offered on 'Green River', the nostalgic title track which hit number two on the national charts, and the ominous yet vibrant 'Bad Moon Rising', which also ascended to number two several months before the 'Green River' disc was released. Two other songs from 'Green River' were promoted as singles, the frentic 'Commotion' (with lyrics even more applicable to today than the late 1960's) which hit number 30, and 'Lodi', a curious laid-back favorite among many of CCR's loyalists, which rose to number 52. 'Green River' and 'Commotion' open the disc in what might be one of the best "one-two punches" ever to open a side of an album, and on the original vinyl, side two opened with 'Bad Moon Rising' and 'Lodi', a sterling complement to side one's intro.

The remaining 5 songs, while not Top-40 material, round out what had become a typical mix for Creedence albums. Creedence is a great cover band, and their rendition of Ray Charles' 'The Night Time Is the Right Time', while not their best cover, is intense and inspired as the album's closer. 'Tombstone Shadow' and 'Sinister Purpose' are the purest blues-rock numbers offered, while 'Wrote a Song For Everyone', lamenting the failure of the wordsmith to communicate with the woman he loves, sounds more like a traditonal country ballad. 'Cross-Tie Walker' effectively plays up the swamp-rock sound parlayed on Creedence hits such as 'Green River' and 'Bad Moon Rising', but with a less catchy melody, yet interesting lyrics.

John Fogerty and his bandmates had the capacity to sing songs that dealt with difficult and desperate themes, yet still maintain a postive, inviting, "down-home" atmosphere. As with 'Bayou Country', 'Green River' is brief in length, but lacking Fogarty's extended guitar solo's that appeal to many CCR fans, and alienate others. While 'Bayou Country' felt underground and radical, 'Greeen River' feels commercial.

My version of this disc is "mastered in analog utilizing the 20-bit K2 Super Coding System" developed by JVC. I don't know what all that means, but I can tell you this: the sound is exceptional, and I personally will make every effort to obtain recordings using this technology in the future. The jewel case is enveloped in a decorative cardboard sleeve, and the superfluous liner notes make the consumer's desire for a lyrics sheet even more compelling.

5 out of 5 stars Track by track the best work of CCC.......2004-04-24

It remains on my mind that rainy evening when I listenes for first time that album. Those days on the vinyl sound and the experience was worthy. I had that feeling that I was in presence of one of the honest and expressive album in that momet and believe me. 1969 was a huge year. Cream, The doors, Steppenwolf, Traffic, Jimmy Hendrix, The who were bands beyond the standard. Something inside me told me that Green river, Conmotion, Bad moon , Lodi Write a song for everyone were songs made with the inspired touch of the genius. It's not a mere casuality that Win Weneders used this album in one of his trilogy road movie "Wrong movement". Because the whole work sounds so fresh like a summer breeze and a meeting among great friends. May be you find Born on the payou the most genial song of CCR ,or the amazing version of Suzie Q or even his eternal Proud Mary . All of them even establish one step ahead in the long trip of this quartet. I have them all (in LP and CD) , but there is something you'll never find in the other two. And I think it's the deep unity, the cohesion expresiveness that seems exist in all the songs as a set. In fact , you listen the music and constitutes a delightful trip. This album contains like no one else the essential nervous that always surrounded that band in the last sixties.
    Forever Credence.

5 out of 5 stars One of the truly essential Creedence records.......2003-09-21

On their third album, Creedence Clearwater Revival finally got rid of the sometimes directionless five-minute jams that weighed down their first two records a little.

"Green River" is probably their tightest album, and their best as well. There is virtually no filler here - the singles are magnificent, and even the album tracks are great.
It opens with the title track, a concise 2½ minutes of tough, "swampy" backbeat and vivid imagery, highlighted by the pithy, intertwined guitar figures of John and Tom Fogerty, and John Fogerty's brief, melodious, less-is-more solo.

Other highlights include the classic rockabilly of "Bad Moon Rising", the melancholy "Lodi", the sinister, soulful blues "Tombstone Shadow", and the slow, mournful "Wrote A Song For Everyone".
But everything is good, really, including the brisk, semi-acoustic country-rocker "Cross-Tie Walker" and the album's only cover song, an energetic rendition of "The Night Time Is The Right Time".

The musicianship is excellent, too. Doug Clifford's stop-start drumming on "Wrote A Song" and "Sinister Purpose" is among his best and most imaginative. John Fogerty plays fiery lead guitar on "Tombstone Shadow", and he and his brother complement each other superbly on the appropriately dark blues-rocker "Sinister Purpose".

Both "Green River" and "Bad Moon Rising" made it to #2, and the album itself was a #1 record back in the autumn of 1969.
There is not a single weak moment on this magnificent fusion of rock, blues, R&B, folk and country, and "Green River" is not just Creedence Clearwater Revival's best album, it is by far the best American rock record of the 1960s.

5 out of 5 stars Sailing Down The Green River!.......2002-06-19

GREEN RIVER is the start of the 'classic albums' run for Creedence Clearwater Revival. For me, BAYOU COUNTRY and CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL hold too much filler to be truly classic. Not only do you have hits represented here, you've got enough swamp rock to fill up the Lousiana Bayou! John Fogerty and co reign supreme in late sixties/early seventies rock . . . sit back, relax, and let GREEN RIVER back up my claim!

GREEN RIVER - An instantly recognisable guitar riff starts us on our musical journey. Written from memories of early childhood vacations and a soda pop bottle label, John Fogerty invites us to a place where things are much simpler and relaxed. The guitar work by John and Tom Fogerty is both basic and spellbinding at the same time; a great example of country rock. It's great we have places like Green River to go to, because just around the corner . . .

COMMOTION - Fast paced rocker describing how we run ourselves into the ground trying to compete in the rat race; not getting anything out of it at all. John's harpwork matches the frantic pace of the song.

TOMBSTONE SHADOW - Amusing tale of an visit to a pessimistic fortune teller. Fogerty's lead work rings like a bell and darts in and out of the backup provided by Tom Fogerty, Doug 'Cosmo' Clifford and Stu Cook.

WROTE A SONG FOR EVEYONE - Song about the inabilty to comunicate
and working things out for ourselves. Contains some poignant digs at the Vietnam war and shady politicians.

BAD MOON RISING - Another attack on the Vietnam Crisis, with John
playing prophet of doom over a bouncy beat. Did you know for years some people thought Fogerty sang, "There's a bathroom on the right"! He even jokingly sings it when he performs this classic live nowadays!

LODI - Here's a classic country rock song dedicated to all those bands forced to play in dives for lousy audiences and even lousier pay. Creedence paid their dues big time before hitting it big in 1969; playing many gigs like Lodi's over and over again
    .

CROSS TIE WALKER - A murky swamp swinger that fits to choogle your brains out to.

SINISTER PURPOSE - This guitar rock track has something evil crawling up on you. Fogerty's axework is howling and spooky and his voice is double tracked for maximum effect. best played on a
cloudy night with a hazy moon.

NIGHT TIME IS THE RIGHT TIME - Vintage blues rocker is a spectacular way to end off a short, but great release by the swamp rock kings from California. Love the call and response vocals throughout the song.

Dimitri Tiomkin was one of the most prominent composers of Hollywood's Golden Age and beyond, his career spanning a half-century and some of America's most classic films. This sprawling, four-disc anthology (its title a marketing nod to the modern remake of one of Tiomkin's notable collaborations with John Wayne) features new digital recordings of full-bodied performances by the City of Prague Orchestra and Festival Chorus, the most ambitious and comprehensive tribute to the composer yet attempted. There's something here for film score buffs (rarities like a suite from his sci-fi genre-defining Thing From Another World and the "Main Theme" for the pilot of TV's Wild, Wild West) and novice alike; indeed one could scarcely ask for a more complete overview of Tiomkin's robust orchestral oeuvre. Divided into four chapters, disc one chronicles how the Ukrainian immigrant concocted a rich Western film heritage (including such genre landmarks as Red River, High Noon, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and Rio Bravo) from largely European traditions, while the next two CD's cover his rousing work for epics and thrillers of every stripe, and collaborations with Hitchcock, Wayne, Capra, Stevens and more. The concluding disc pays homage to Tiomkin the unlikely pop tunesmith, via his hit vocal themes to Rawhide, Wild is the Wind and High Noon's "Do Not Forsake Me." --Jerry McCulley

This is an excellent set of music of Dimitri Tiomkin's music! The 4th disc is short (at just over 30 minutes), but thats because it is just the vocal versions of tracks which appeared in instrumental form throughout the first 3 discs. Whenever you buy a silva screen compilation, the first thing you ask yourself is 'when were these recordings made' and 'do I have these tracks on other compilations? Thankfully, this set has TONS of new recordings, but there is some recycled stuff and they are as follows:

Dial M For Murder is from the 1993 History of Hitchcock Vol. I, while Strangers on a Train is from 1995's History of Hitchcock Vol. II.

Three tracks originate from 1994's "Music From the Films Of John Wayne". They are "The High and the Mighty", "The Alamo - Overture" and "The Alamo - Green Leaves of Summer".

Red River is from 1996's "How The West Was Won: Classic Western Film Scores Vol. One".

The Thing From Another World suite is from the excelllent 1998 set "Alien Invasion: Space And Beyond II"

Many tracks first appeared on "Way Out West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection Vol. Two". They are: "Duel In The Sun", "The Alamo (Davy Crockett)", "Friendly Persuasion", "Giant (Main Theme)", "Gunfight at the OK Corral", "High Noon", "Rio Bravo", and "The Unforgiven (The Need For Love)".

The rest of the tracks are brand spankin new, and most are not available on other discs, so snag this one up in a hurry!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent compilation of an important composer........2004-07-16

This long overdue collection of Tiomkin standards and rarities is a must for any fan of symphonic music; albeit, for film or concert hall. As the liner notes clarify; these recordings are a real labor of love for James Fitzpatrick and the Silva Screen team. Tiomkin is; undoubtedly, one of the most difficult of composers to replicate. This recording comes extremely close to "hitting the nail on the head" particularly with tracks such as: "Across the Texas Panhandle" from the Unforgiven, The Entr'acte from Duel in the Sun, The Guns of Navarone, The War Wagon, and the main title and Jett Rink theme from Giant. This recording is a bargain, particularly for collectors who have sought after many of Tiomkin's composer conducted soundtracks (which are getting harder and harder to obtain). Listeners who enjoy this set should consider seeking out previous cd releases of the soundtracks to "The Guns of Navarone" (SONY, Varese Sarabande), "The Fall of the Roman Empire" (Varese Sarabande, PEG), "55 Days at Peking" (Varese Sarabande), and "The Alamo" :original soundtrack (still available on SONY-Legacy).

5 out of 5 stars "film composer Dimitri Tiomkin gave his all and then some".......2004-07-13

Silva America presents the ultimate in film music during the illustrious career of an icon and legendary composer of film scores ~ "Alamo:Dimitri Tiomkin Essential Film Collection/O.S.T", featuring some long forgotten 53 cues that sent chills and thrills into the pulses of world events ~ selections from a limited collectors edition that would make any "film-score-buff" green with envy.

Tiomkin was born in Ukraine, Russia [1894-1979] attended and graduated from St. Petersburg Academy[studied under the famed composer Glazunov] ~ had a degree in music as well as law ~ came to America in 1925, shown great interest for Native American music early in his film career.

Great fondness for "The Western" ~ "DUEL IN THE SUN" (1946) (Gregory Peck, Jennifer Jones, Joseph Cotton, Lionel Barrymore, Lilian Gish and Charles Bickford - one of biggest and successful epic Westerns ever, score & photography was simply breathtaking), "RED RIVER" (1948) (John Wayne, Monty Cliff and Walter Brennan - the Duke should have won an Oscar for his performance as the aging cantankerous cattle baron)"HIGH NOON" (1952)(classic film with Gary Cooper in his Oscar winning performance of Will Kane), "TENSION AT TABLE ROCK" (1956), "GUNFIGHT AT THE OK CORRAL" (1957)(Burt Lancaster as Wyatt Earp & Kirk Douglas as Doc Holliday pulled this off with the help of the Main Theme), "NIGHT PASSAGE" (1957), "RIO BRAVO" (1959) (top box office leaders John Wayne, Dean Martin, Walter Brennan and Ricky Nelson), "THE YOUNG LAND" (1959) (young Dennis Hopper), "RAWHIDE" (TV Series) (1959-66) (Eric Fleming as trail boss Gil Favor & Clint Eastwood as Rowdy Yates), "THE UNFORGIVEN" (1960) (Burt Lancaster, Audie Murphy and Audrey Hepburn), "THE WILD, WILD WEST" (TV Series) (1965-69)(Tiomkin's music never saw the light of day), "WAR WAGON" (1967) (John Wayne & Kirk Douglas starred) (beautifully melodic) ~ it's easy to see why Tiomkin loved Western lore.

Second disc contains The Epics ~ "LAND OF THE PHARAOHS" (1955) (Jack Hawkins as Pharaoh Cheops and a beautiful Joan Collins as his scheming wife), "55 DAYS AT PEKING" (1963) (Charlton Heston, David Niven and Ava Gardner is the all star cast), "THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE" (1964) (featuring Alec Guinness as emperor Marcus Aurelius), "CIRCUS WORLD" (1964) (John Wayne, Claudia Cardinale and Rita Hayworth under the big top) ~ next we Hitchcock Thrillers with "STRANGERS ON A TRAIN" (1951) (a masterpiece film featuring Robert Walker and Farley Granger are both very convincing as we learn, never talked to strangers on a train or anywhere), "DIAL M FOR MURDER" (1954) (tense moments come from Grace Kelly, Ray Milland and Robert Cummings - they don't get any better than this) ~ finally Drama and High Adventure with "HIGH AND MIGHTY" (1954) (another outstanding performance by John Wayne, as the co-pilot of an airline whistling the haunting theme), "GIANT" (1956)(another big epic film with Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, James Dean and Chill Wills show us what it's like to be a Texan, with oil and money), "WILD IS THE WIND" (1957) (Anthony Quinn, Anna Magnani and Anthony Franciosa), "THE GUNS OF NAVARONE" (1961) (World War II film featuring Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn, David Niven and Stanley Baker on a small Greek Island trying to outwit the Germans and a very big gun) ~ some of Tiomkin's most inspiring themes rise to the surface.

On disc three ~ as we continue with Drama and High Adventures "IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE" (1946) (James Stewart, Donna Reed, Thomas Mitchell, Lionel Barrymore and Ward Bond with wholesome warm and endearing themes from our favorite composer), "TARZAN AND THE MERMAIDS" (1948) (in his 12th film as Tarzan, Johnny Weissmuller still had what it takes to swim and defeat the man-god Balu - Weissmuller and Tiomkin the perfect combination for this Tarzan adventure), "CYRANO DE BERGERAC" (1950) (Jose Ferrer stars as Edmond Rostand's famous swordsman with a even more famous nose), "THE WELL" (1951) (intense cues give the film musical triumphs in final scenes), "THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD" (1951) (exciting Howard Hawks film with a score to match), "FRIENDLY PERSUASION" (1956) (director William Wyler shows the life and times of a Quaker family played by Gary Cooper, Dorothy Mcguire and Anthony Perkins during the American Civil War, very touching), "THE ALAMO" (1960) (big budget epic western with Big John Wayne it's producer, director and star as Davy Crockett with a haunting and never to be forgotten "The Green Leaves of Summer"), "TOWN WITHOUT PITY" (1961) (Kirk Douglas in a post-war Germany story, blends jazz themes with Tiomkin signature arrangements) ~ Tiomkin always made the difference when it came to scoring a film.

The last and final disc four ~ The Tiomkin Vocal Songbook featuring "This Then is Texas" (Giant), "Rawhide" (Rawhide), "Do Not Forsake Me" (High Noon), "Follow the River" (Night Passage), "The Ballad of Jett Rink" (Giant), "Thee I Love" (Friendly Percuasion), "It's A Wonderful Life", "Wild Is The Wind", "The High and the Mighty", The Ballad of the War Wagon" (The War Wagon), "Rio Bravo", "Strange are the Ways of Love" (The Young Land), "The Ballad of Jim West" (The Wild Wild West), "The Wild Wild West" (The Wild Wild West) ~ many were hit makers of the day and in the top ten.

Outstanding performances by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra (Nic Raine, Paul Bateman, Mario Klemens - are the conductors), Crouch End Festival Chorus (David Temple - choir master), featuring vocals by Jason Howard and Keith Ferreira ~ hats off to James Fitzpatrick (producer), Reynold da Silva (executive producer), Olilvia Tiomkin Douglas, John Waxman, Rick Clark and Gareth Williams (associate producers) ~ all film producers and directors welcomed the legendary composer with open arms for their forthcoming projects ~ the "film-score-buff" collectors are ecstatic about this four disc release on the essential film music collection of DIMITRI TIOMKIN, the arrangements and performances are top notch inclusive of HDCD/Dolby Surround.

When listening to the music of a film, you had the feeling of the storyline, characters and convictions of the whole picture, they'll never be another to come this way again ~ Silva America has outdone themselves on this one, it is definitely a five star film score box set...gotta love it!

Whilst certainly not for everybody, Mark Arm's Stoogesque vocals on Dry As A Bone/Rehab Doll certainly make this record unique and showcase his talent at being able to take any serious matter and present it as a laughing matter. But the record is by far a joke, planting the seeds for the 'grunge movement' its themes of troublesome sex and relationships, drugs, having nothing to do...all embrace the 'teen spirit' later seen in other acts at the same time. Arm's voice at this age is sure better than his more well known comrad Kurt. Arm even manages to get some trademark screaming in. Gossard, Ament and Fairweather seem to be on top form but much looser and raw than in their later projects. Vincent does a good job on drums but I'm not really an expert in drum playing so all I can say is it goes along very well with the job everyone else does. Jack Endino's production on the record is second to none and as always encapsulates the dirty mood all his early mixes give. If you're a Mudhoney, early Soundgarden, Stooges or even Mother Love Bone fan I am sure this record is for you. Pearl Jam fans, don't expect an acoustic well polished masterpiece of an album, this is far from it, but it's a great history lesson. If you want to know the grass roots of the 'Seattle Sound' get this, along with perhaps The Fluid, early Soundgarden, Skin Yard and some U-Men.

1 out of 5 stars There ain't nothing good about this mush.......2005-05-30

Bad, bad, bad. And I don't mean that in a good way. Green River may have been credited as starting Grunge, but they really are nothing more than a sludgy mess without a hook or a prayer. Grunge is just an excuse to sound like sh*t and mope. It's amazing that Pearl Jam was bore of the ashes from this awful band. By the way, that reminds me: Go buy Ten or Vs. instead.

3 out of 5 stars I agree with Rebecca from Canada.......2004-12-18

This album is OK but not great. It has flashes of greatness, but is all over the map as far as consistency goes. The cover they do of Bowie's "Queen Bitch" is awesome, and just might be the best thing Mark Arm ever did musically. Some of the original material, however, is a bit overbearing and almost self-mocking.

Knowing the sort of humor some of these guys would later go on to display in their future projects, it wouldn't surprise me to learn that they were indeed trying to do a send-up of contemporary rock music at the time. Perhaps Stone and Jeff were serious when they wrote the music to "Rehab Doll", "One More Stitch" and "Together We'll Never", and they got upset when Arm turned took those riffs and put his over-the-top demented screeching and laughable Cave-esque dirge lyrics over them, and perhaps that's why the band broke up.

Whatever, I'm glad they did because I think Mudhoney was miles better than this. The songs I did like on this album, aside from the aforementioned Bowie cover, were the stooge-like "Unwind", "PCC", and the anthemic "Swallow My Pride", which may have actually been a Steve Turner song, I'm not sure.

This album is more of an historical document rather than an active part of one's record collection, and is as notable for the ridiculous looking band photos in the liner as it is for the music. Buy it used.

4 out of 5 stars The Beginning of Grunge........2004-06-17

People from pearl jam and mother love bone are in this band. The cd is great. I liked it the first time I heard it. It's definately worth checking out. This band is a huge piece of grunge. They deserve just as much respect as Soundgarden, Mudhoney, and The Gits. If you don't like punk, then you might not like it. How could you not like punk? This takes it one step further. It's something many bands weren't able to do. They didn't sell out. Yet, they have all the raw energy and attitude that rock is. I'm surprised Pearl Jam doesn't have these guys jump on stage to do few tunes at their shows. That would be great!

    4 out of 5 stars Nirvana Who?.......2004-04-27

If you wanna listen to grunge at its best then listen to this. Many people make the miscalculation that pearl jam and Nirvana are the epitemy of grunge. Well their not. Their brilliant in every way besides the fact that they werent really grunge. You can really see how much Gossard and ament have changed while jamming out to Green river. Songs like "Queen bitch", and "ozzie", exemplify what grunge was really about. check it out you ll like it. And why your at it pick up a mother love bone, or tad record. discover true grunge.

5 out of 5 stars Legendary selections by a legendary voice.......2004-03-24

With special emphasis on the variety presented in this collection, this album has a broadness of scope that will appeal to anyone who appreciates the magic of the human voice.
McCormack was perhaps the most popular entertainer in the world during his career, comparable with the superstars of today, only richer in the currency of his day.
Though purists may have criticized his shift to the popular venue as opportunism, and perhaps desertion of his training in the classical tradtions, he was simply presenting what people wanted to hear. Whether he set a pattern of career management followed by modern entertainers or was simply happiest when the accolades flowed over him matters not. The talent and richness are his legacy to us.
His range and vocal dexterity are well illustrated and represented by this larger than usual collection, and anyone with a particular favorite tune in his rather loose genre will likely find it here.
After a journey through this collection, listeners may well gain another special melody or two for addition to their personal list of "best ever" songs and singers.
Although it may be considered a bit foolish, some will choose this album for only one or two tracks. Some call that trait wasteful, but when a jewel of performance is played again and again, the teardrop may fall once more, and the heart will thrill yet again.
This album will please many musical palates, even those who claim no special fondness for "Irish Tenors."

5 out of 5 stars Every last note..........2006-06-14

A super budget 5 CD collection of all of Grainger's Piano music.
      Every last note!
The shipping alone would be $17.00+ for the 5 individual Cds.
Englishman Martin Jones plays these as if he wrote them. He is thoroughly inside this music.
I think his best work to date.
He is joined on CD #5 by Richard Mcmahon and Phillip Martin. Where they rollick in various combos and trios on 1, 2 and 3 pianos. This is exhilerating. Especially on an truly uplifting version of Green Bushes.
The entire set is strongly idiomatic and given a clear, crisp, warm and spacious recording. FIRST CLASS sound.
There are too many highlights to single out, but the In A Nutshell Suite and Green Bushes are especially GOOD!
There is not a bad note or "vibe" on any of these CDs.
Highly recommended for Granger fans and fans of English Piano Music.
