TIMELESS.......2007-05-26
This beautiful album deserves all the superlatives it has been given. It is both childlike and challenging, which makes for a most interesting mix of simplistic, complicated, and beautiful music and sounds. Childhood is filled with awe and wonder, just like this album, but it can also be very dark and scary. Donovan understands this. No matter how innocent a song may seem at first, Donovan has a way of reminding the listener that these songs and the subjects at hand are very serious and heady stuff for those who have remained young at heart. Donovan asks you to listen. I think I would have opened this album with the song, "In An Old Fashion Picture Book", as his request and purpose are finally revealed. A lot of people have said some wonderful things about the album. All of which I agree with. Donovan is in fine voice and spirit. But, in my opinion, it is his unique understanding and magnificent guitar playing that lifts this album to the heavens. This musical adventure needs to be heard from beginning to end to fully understand and appreciate the magic that Donovan has given to us. Take the time. The voyage is well worth it.
A musical fountain of youth - Beats the heck out of vitamins.......2006-09-14
This cd should be required listening for everyone over the age of 50. The gentle rhythms, stunning guitars and beautiful vocals will definitely lower your stress level and could, if listened to daily, add years to your life.
I have been a Donovan fan ever since I first heard "Catch The Wind" with its hauntingly understated strings on my transistor radio back in 1965. I have always made a point of grabbing every Donovan album as soon as it hit the market. However, the first time I ever saw this album was in 1973, and it was an imported copy. I can't believe this album was ever released domestically because in all these years I have never once seen anything but imported copies, and I have looked very hard. Considering the fact that "A Gift From A Flower To A Garden" was a big success in the U.S, I find it incredible that Epic apparently never saw fit to release H.M.S. Donovan.
There have been so many excellent reviews of this cd, there is no need for me to restate how wonderful the songs are. I would like to point out that my personal favorite is "Coulter's Candy" which features a group vocal sound similar to "Happiness Runs", only better.
If you love quiet but powerful songs performed with taste and flair, you must get this cd. You won't be sorry.
A masterpiece. Claim to another release.......2006-06-02
This is a masterpiece album. It is the integral version. But, there is a lack of warm on Donovan's voice and acoustic guitar in this remastered edition. We hope Donovan re-remaster this album to bring back the warm. His mark. My conclusion is a result of comparison between this edition and the japanese Goldtone edition (out of print, now. Just 1000 items). Bootlegs are not legal and this comments are just a technical opinion from an audiophile to another. The japanese is better, you can "feel" Donovan there, in your room sound. The guitar sound is a real acoustic sound, not metalic sound. We sincerelly hope Donovan follow this technology to do a re-remastering.
Donovan is the master of easy tones.......2006-01-13
I love pleasant things, and Donovan brings melody to the places we have never emerged from. Some say this is childrens music; indeed, it is fit for a child (fairie tales abound), but where do we draw the line between nature's music and adult fantasy? He has a way of bringing our aesthetic ideals to our ears. This is a fantastic album...no matter what your background or musical preference. If you believe in pure goodness.....buy this cd.
lost in the label wars shuffle.......2005-01-07
"HMS Donovan" was indeed meant to be the follow-up to the very successful "Open Road" LP of 1970 in the US. Donovan, however, had already signed on the dotted-line with Warner Brothers even though he was still contractually obligated to Columbia's Epic Records imprint. The predictable Big Business lawsuits ensued, Donovan became ensnarled in a kind of Record Company lock-out, and "HMS Donovan," for all intents and purposes, was lost at sea -- an excellent LP simply cast adrift in the US market. A kind of sequel to 1967's "A Gift From a Flower to a Garden" double-album, "HMS" is well-worth checking out, even 30-plus years down the road.
