Nominated for a 1998 Grammy award for Best Rock Album and featuring the single, "Falling in Love (Is Hard on the Knees)," nominated for a Best Rock Performance, Nine Lives is Aerosmith's first album in their lucrative re-signing to Columbia Records. Together over 25 years, the Boston band has always been known for their gritty sex anthems, hard-buckling rhythms, and bic-flicking power ballads. Not nearly as flat-out rock as previous releases, Pump or Get A Grip, Nine Lives experiments with a multitude of instruments, including hammered dulcimer, Indian fiddle, and Chapman stick. This Noah's Ark approach allows the band to experiment within its rock parameters with the appropriately titled "A Taste of India." They haven't sworn off the ballads ("Fallen Angels" is what you'd expect) and they still riff like the Aerosmith of old ("Crash"). --Rob O'Connor

The title of this bonus-track-rich, 10-disc chronicle of Robert Plant's post-Led Zeppelin career refers not only to the number of solo albums the singer has released since Zep flamed out in 1980, but also his penchant for stubborn endurance and artistic reinvention in the face of time and the tides of fashion. While both Plant and Jimmy Page have never been able to fully escape the lengthy shadows of their original world-beating collaboration, it's the vocalist who's best--if irregularly--tempered, teased, and folded Zep's legacy into his mercurial solo career, with his 1982 debut Pictures at Eleven and 1988's Now & Zen being the most overt about it. More crucial to Plant's restless muse has been a willingness to move beyond Led Zeppelin, whether successfully casting a more structured set of songs in synth-drenched new wave veneer on "Principle of Moments" (supplemented here by the previously unreleased "Turnaround" and three live cuts, including an unlikely cover of Bob Marley's "Lively Up Yourself"), revisiting a wide swath of influential roots on the Honeydrippers EP and his first release with contemporary backing band Strange Sensation on 2002's Dreamland, or the symphonic ambitions of Manic Nirvana and multihued folk retrenchment of Fate of Nations. Enhanced by 26 bonus tracks of outtakes, demos, live cuts, and remixes, the nine albums anthologized here are also covered in an insightful essay by journalist Ed Vulliamy. The set's bonus DVD contains an hour-long retrospective hosted by Plant himself and features rare film clips and comments from many of his collaborators and admirers, as well as 20 career-spanning solo videos. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

Legendary vocalist Robert Plant's extraordinary post-Led Zeppelin career is celebrated in this inspired 10-disc box set that encompasses his nine solo albums, expanded and remastered, and a bonus DVD with a one-hour documentary!

5 out of 5 stars An Alternative Truth.......2007-06-24

The preceeding reviews are adequate for you to determine if this package is for you or not. There's really not much new to say, but I did want to reiterate one or two things.

The first thing is, the remastering. I did a back to back comparison of "Principle of Moments" last night. This is my favorite Plant work, and was the one I most wanted to hear.

The truth is, it really isn't all that different. Once again, they've simply boosted the volume of the disc. So, you put in the remastered disc and set the volume, ansd then put in the original disc, and you can barely hear anything.

Turn up the volume on the original disc though, and you have pretty much the same sound as the new one. It's got the same clarity, the same detail. Perhaps there are minor differences, slightly tighter bass, a minute bit of detail more, but honestly, it's not anything to get excited about.

So in all honesty, the "remaster" is a bit of a red-herring. It's a shame, because that was the main pull for me.

As for the bonus DVD - the hour documentary is reasonably interesting, although it's far too brief. Plant only talks about songs that have accompanying videos, which means my favorite tracks never get a mention. And with only and hour, he doesn't get to give any real details about the various periods the albums were made in.

As for the 20 something videos - they're all here. The good news is, they're in stereo, DTS 5.1, and Dolby 5.1. Always a nice bonus that.

The bad news is, they videos themselves are all basically unwatchable. That embarassing 80's stuff is cringeworthy to the extreme, and Plant mostly makes a fool of himself.

The packaging is great.

The individual releases have the full liner notes taken from the box set included, so if you simply go for the titles you care about, you don't miss anything.

Still - if you're a Plant fan why not grab this? It's not ASTONISHING - but it's pretty good and complete.

3 out of 5 stars Wish I could give it 3 1/2.......2007-05-05

This was a bargain because I owned only 4 of the 9. Also there's the dvd that's not sold seperately. BUT..... THE reason I bought the set was for the REMASTERING. Unfortunately, the difference is NOMINAL. There are however enough unreleased or unavailable in the U.S. tracks to make up a cd of their own, plus there's lots of good live tracks and at least 1 enjoyable remix. The packaging looks great and is original, but it's also very cumbersome putting a disk back in it's sleeve. The sleeves are bound in book form, but the style of binding keeps the front pages from staying out of the way when you access the rear sleeves. You almost need one hand to hold the top pages back, one to spread the carboard sleeve open so it doesn't scratch the disk, and a third hand to put in/take out the disk. The best thing for me has been discovering everything released after Manic Nirvana. It's possible Mighty Rearranger could become my favorite Plant cd. So....... Pros: Fair price, great music, nice extras, sounds a little better than the original releases, VERY attractive and high quality packaging. (The guy that wrote the booklet was a bit gushing, but nearly all of these retrospectives have the same "feature". I remember after reading the booklet in The Babys anthology, I nearly believed they were the biggest band in the world.) Cons: Only a LITTLE better sounding than the original releases, inconvenient packaging.

5 out of 5 stars All I am is a singer who writes a few songs........2007-04-27

Nine Lives is a massive nine CD, one DVD set of Robert Plant's solo career. Granted he's a rock god, but is a boxed set dedicated to Robert Plant's solo career, really necessary? Perhaps not, but that is up to each buyer to decide.

Despite his relatively steady presence on the radio with songs from Led Zeppelin, his solo releases rarely received the kind of treatment afforded like some other high-profile solo artists coming out of big bands. There may be reasons for this, but it's unfortunate, because as Nine Lives makes clear Robert Plant has been more consistent and consistently interesting than either. As tightly as the ghost of his former band has held him, Robert Plant has succeeded in charting an original course.

Not all has aged well, of course, but what's astonishing is just how much of this stuff still holds up. 1982's Pictures at Eleven and 1983's The Principle of Moments are albums very much of their time, but the songs and performances transcend their production enough to overcome this. The years have not been as kind to the Honeydrippers Volume One and 1985's Shaken `N' Stirred, but from 1988's Now and Zen on, he's been on a dissonant, solidly enjoyable tear.

The albums have all been remastered, of course, and bonus tracks added to each, everything sounds great and the remastering is noticed right away. The set also comes with a DVD with 20 of Robert Plant's music videos and an hour long documentary where he talks about his career and each album and why he decided to go solo and what was behind each of his solo albums.

Within the nine CDs, you've got a list of rock radio classics: 29 Palms, Big Log, Burning Down One Side, In the Mood, Little by Little, Pledge Pin, Sea of Love, Shine it All Around, Tall Cool One, Tie Dye on the Highway and more. Along with the 85 old tunes, you've got 25 bonus cuts, live recordings and remixes peppered with a few so-so leftovers and demos.

You've got an eye-catching packaging and a 60-page color book containing more biographical data, plus an album-by-album chronicle. It is exhaustive. And exhausting.

This set is for fans of Robert Plant's solo work and not that of Led Zeppelin as they are very different.

The only question you need to answer is how much Robert Plant do you really need?

5 out of 5 stars Nine Lives 5 Stars.......2007-04-20

This sounds superb and the bonus tracks are largely excellent. The packaging is great and user friendly. The only disappointment is the book which while OK is overly reflective, even for a retrospective such as this. Box sets like everything else come in a variety of types from great to poor, this one is great, get it!

4 out of 5 stars Robert Plant's Swan Song.......2007-03-06

At his best, Plant exemplifies why Zeppelin was so popular. Lyrically and performance-wise, he is quite the showman. That being said, at his worst, Plant is pedestrian. This collection contains some of both. "Now and Zen", and "The Principles of Moments" are incredible, but I just never got "Dreamland". That it includes his latest release is a bonus, and all of the bonus material is a pleasant surprise, given that in most cases, "deleted scenes" deserved to be deleted. If you like what you have heard from Robert in years past, this is the definitive collection to own. I had 4 or 5 of the original CDs, and don't regret spending the extra money to replace them with this collection. The old CD's will make great gifts to introduce my friends to some of Roberts "not so mainstream" stuff.

4 out of 5 stars Little Bizarre.......2007-07-08

I bought this one because it has the song Pink. But there are more songs to rock away to!!

5 out of 5 stars very good, this is aerosmith.......2007-07-08

I really liked this album, much more than "Honkin' on Bobo". This is a great collection of songs and reminds me a lot of the style they had in the "Get a Grip" album. I like the variety of these somgs too. I highly recommend "Nine Lives". Well worth your money.

4 out of 5 stars Decent Album.......2007-01-25

Man......I am starting to run out of things to say about Aerosmith and I still have two albums to go. This one is another decent effort. Several more big hits came from this one including "Falling In Love Is Hard On The Knees", and "Pink" neither which are favorites of mine. Elseware the album contains some good stuff. "Something's Got To Give" is an energetic rocker with a killer harmonica solo from Tyler. "Crash" and "The Farm" are both solid. "Taste Of India" is something different. The rest of the album is pretty typical of the band, all solid and competent. That's about all I can think of.

2 out of 5 stars Eh.............2006-07-23

Well I am an Aerosmith fan, and a few years ago I thought I should buy there latest album. Well I did, and I can't say i'm to happy with it. There were only about 3 songs that were worth listening to, and the cd didn't work in any pc I put it in. The album art is cool, but the lyrics in the pamplet are out of sync and confusing. I'd say no to this album.

5 out of 5 stars OVERLOOKED POWERHOUSE OF AN ALBUM!.......2006-07-16

What an album!

This is an underrated masterpiece that no one would call one of Aerosmith's best albums when compared to hit-laden fare like "Pump" and "Toys in the Attic," but that's only because it never got the attention it deserved. In a perfect world this album would have been embraced as every previous Aerosmith album was (it is far better and more eclectic than it's predecessor, "Get a Grip," which was a monster smash, their last as of this writing); but thanks to a relative lack of anthems, as well as radio and record companies moving away from pushing new music from classic artists, this artistic firecracker was virtually ignored.

Seriously, some 30-plus-year-old acts have put out some of their best, most critically albums in the twilight of their careers, but radio and their record companies would rather push the latest pseudo-rock trend band or slut-turned-singer than give this music a chance. You can't blame them when even their own fans constantly say stupid stuff like, "I like their old stuff," but never give the new stuff a chance. Why? Cuz they didn't hear the latest hit on the radio. A vicious cycle. If their was any justice Bruce Springsteen's "The Rising" would have had as many radio singles and sold as many copies now as "Born In the USA" did in 1984. And that's just one, big example (also see every album from Tom Petty in the last 10 years - just dumped into the market place with no support from the record company, or at least nothing close to the support they once gave).

But I digress. It didn't help Aerosmith that, like a lot of great albums, this came out a time when teen-pop, boybands, rap-rock, the Latin invasion, and every other gimmick of a music style was being force-fed to the public. There was just no room for good old rock `n roll. It's amazing how much the musical landscape changed in the 3 years between this release and "Get a Grip," and what an effect it had on Aerosmith's, not just sales, but PR. They were the toast of the town and sold a bazillion records; 3 years later they were brushed off.

But the music certainly stands on its own. "Falling in Love (Is Hard on the Knees)" and "Pink," the two, albeit minor, singles are great, typical Aerosmith rockers that were probably as good a choice as any to represent this album to the fans. Again, it would have been great if the record company and radio pushed them enough to allow them to be heard. (Not too many probably remember that "Hole in My Soul" was also a single, but faded fast, even by the short-shelf-life standards of the other tracks.)

As good - and Aerosmith-ish - as these two songs are, there are deeper cuts. "Taste of India" maybe the best Aerosmith song you have never heard. And like "Taste," "The Farm" takes a straight-forward rocker and pumps it up with experimentation, overdubs and different musical styles all ricocheting off each other. The result is an exhilarating, original, and artistic blend that is as experimental as anything Aerosmith has ever done, yet as undeniably Aerosmith as anything they have ever done. The boys really took the phrase "everything but the kitchen sink" to heart on this one. The "Wall of Sound" approach is not just implemented here; the thing is climbed, conquered and blown up. Phil Spector would be proud. See the two aforementioned songs, the title track, "Falling in Love...," "Something's Gotta Give," and "Attitude Adjustment" for proof. These songs make for a sonic boom of an album.

Electric guitars are all over the place on these tried-and-true Aerosmith rockers, but for an album that is so diverse within individual songs, the tracks themselves are a diverse collection of tunes. There is also a handful of standard ballads (what we get for making "I Don't Want To Miss a Thing" their first and, so far only #1 single) and then there are songs like "Ain't That a Bitch," "Fallen Angels," "Kiss Your Past Goodbye," and "Full Circle," that fall somewhere in between. They are technically "power ballads," I guess, but to label them just that is to do them a grave injustice. Aerosmith's biggest strength as writers has always been their ability to cleverly turn standard phrases and clichés on their ear. They can craft a whole song out of cleverly stitched together double entandres. It's a shame that few have heard some of the terrifically cynical, self-depreciating, sarcastic, sly and defiant lyrics that are peppered throughout this whole album. "Don't give me no lip I got enough of my own," Steven Tyler deadpans on "Falling in Love..." "Nine Lives, puss and booty," he sings on the title track (hint: it's less about a cat than, well, you know). And "The Farm," "Fallen Angels," and "Pink" are all, unto themselves, full songs of this kind of thing. Even if you disagree this album is an ultimate effort by Aerosmith in its entirety, do yourself a favor and just listen to the lyrics and appreciate all the lyrical poetry and prose they drop here. As written, this album might make for the best rap album that ended up a rock record.

I love this alum!

This is an album that, with maybe just two or three others in my CD collection, slips into the back of mind for a while and then one day I'm scanning my collection for something great I haven't heard in a while and it always jumps out at me. Then it fades back into my collection to wait until it is needed again (it's the Batman of my CD collection). Every time I put it in again it's like discovering it for the first time. In a way, maybe that is reason enough to be okay with the fact this album was not over exposed.

Maybe.

4 out of 5 stars Great album, bad conversion.......2007-07-15

This is REO's best album. A great rocker. The song Easy Money is one of the greatest unknown songs that I know of.

Notice I said Album though, because I must warn you that the CD is a bad conversion. I really hope that someone remasters it. I noticed that on my cd that some of the guitars were hard to here and some seemed to be missing all together. So I played it in a different player with headphones and discovered that about a third of the way through that the left track was kicking out. So, thinking that I had a bad copy, i ordered another and was bummed to find the same problem.

I cant praise the album enough, BUT if you know this album you will really notice the missing sounds.

5 out of 5 stars Undiscovered Treasure.......2007-07-04

I had been listening to REO for just a little while (You Can Tune a Piano and Live, You Get What You Play) when this release came out. Other than 'I Need You Tonight' from Cronin (the start of his knack for writing the top 40 hit) this is a great and very under-rated album that not too many have stumbled upon. Fans really picked up on REO with their Hi-Infidelity release. I love this album because it still brings you the REO sound from their previous albums and maybe even a little bit heavier. This is when Cronin sounds his best and really seems the right fit for the band after replacing Luttrell way back after their first album and then replacing Murphy(after their third) for their Live album. For me this album just sticks out like a sore thumb because its so different from all their next releases. This never really got much airplay on the radio that I can remember, but lots of play on the turntable. From this point on REO never looked back to their early days and that sound they created. Instead Cronin led the charge into top 40 stardom and, I guess, there wasn't any turning back because if they did who would buy it. Unfortunately, fans fell in love with Cronin and his ballads much to the early fans dismay. Pick this cd up today. A great rocker.

5 out of 5 stars A great rock and roll albun.......2007-05-30

I love this album--this is a great album to get if you like heavy rock. I love to crank this cd (I have upgraded from the album) in my car-- even though my kids think I am a dork-- still great listening after all these years.

5 out of 5 stars NINE LIVES IS ONE OF REO SPEEDWAGON'S GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS AND CONTRIBUTIONS IN ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY........2007-04-24

I will be writing a review on the legendary masterpiece album entitled "REO SPEEDWAGON - NINE LIVES" by one of Rock's all-time greatest bands that would forever influence 70's Rock n' Roll and beyond. I give you one of America's pride and joy's, REO SPEEDWAGON. "NINE LIVES" was originally released in 1979 on Vinyl/LP and Cassette on the Epic Records label in association with and manufactured by CBS Records Inc. This legendary album would be released on Compact Disc in the mid to late 80's. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the overall best informative and most accurate review possible.

REO SPEEDWAGON will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for writing and recording some of Rock's most sacred classic anthems. REO SPEEDWAGON would also be one of the true pioneers in Rock n' Roll history to ever influence and change 70's Rock n' Roll music and beyond. The history of REO SPEEDWAGON dates all the way back to 1968, via a pair of University of Illinois students. The band was first formed by original band members, keyboardist Neal Doughty and drummer Alan Gratzer. REO SPEEDWAGON has gone through many personnel changes throughout the band's history. However, I am only going to focus on the bandmembers that were involved during the recording of this masterpiece album. When both original bandmembers, keyboardist Neal Doughty and drummer Alan Gratzer met up and joined forces in 1978 with REO SPEEDWAGON'S new lead singer and frontman Kevin Cronin, lead guitarist Gary Richrath and bassist Bruce Hall, a new improved and modified line-up was complete and REO SPEEDWAGON would be reborn again. This new legendary line-up would last up until 1988. It would be during that 1978-1988 period, that REO SPEEDWAGON would record some of their all-time greatest albums in the band's as well as Rock n' Roll history. When REO SPEEDWAGON came out of the recording studio with the already finished and completed acetate, the band would hand in the finished product to their record label Epic Records. Epic Records would later release the album as the legendary "NINE LIVES" album in 1979. "NINE LIVES" should definitely rank as one of the all-time greatest albums ever recorded in Rock n' Roll history. In my opinion, "NINE LIVES" is without a doubt, a true testament of five extremely talented individuals and a fine fitting tribute to a great legendary band that was truly indeed, far ahead of their time.

It is now time to let the Rock n' Roll music of REO SPEEDWAGON to speak for itself and back it up by doing all of the talking musically. The legendary masterpiece "NINE LIVES" album begins with the a*s kicking hard Rocker "Heavy On Your Love," the incredible hard Rocker "Drop It (An Old Disquise)," the merciless hard Rocker "Only The Strong Survive," the breathtaking acoustic and electric hard Rocker "Easy Money," the firey and amazing hard Rockin' rendition of the CHUCK BERRY classic anthem, "Rock & Roll Music," the unbelievable hard Rocker "Take Me," the soft and smooth acoustic Rocker "I Need You Tonight," the refreshing and uplifting hard Rocker "Meet Me On The Mountain" and the best blistering hard Rocker on the whole album, "Back On The Road Again." May I also add that REO SPEEDWAGON'S frontman Kevin Cronin was delivering and laying down some of the most blistering and sizzlin' red hot lead vocals during the recording of this masterpiece album. Cronin's incredible lead vocals combined along with Gary Richrath's merciless guitar riffs and licks, would fire up the band and take the music to another level unimagined.

Overall, this is one great masterpiece album worth checking out and seeking further research and information into especially if you are a hardcore diehard REO SPEEDWAGON fan or a devout music collector. As for all of the curious newcomers and new beginners that are not quite familiar with the sound and music of REO SPEEDWAGON, perhaps you should research further into purchasing one of their many greatest hits compilation albums that might be right for you. If you still feel that you want more of REO SPEEDWAGON, you can research further into the band's whole music catalog of albums either on Amazon com or your nearest local Borders Books and Music store. Either way, you will have made the right choice in starting your new REO SPEEDWAGON music collection.

I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary masterpiece album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This priceless gem will definitely prove to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This is one great treasure album that no hardcore music fan or devout music collector would want to be without.

In closing, REO SPEEDWAGON'S "NINE LIVES" album would be released to highly critically acclaim. REO SPEEDWAGON would shortly embark on what would be one of their greatest legendary tours yet. REO SPEEDWAGON would still record and release many more great albums that were still yet to come. With this in mind, REO SPEEDWAGON has forever left their mark and place in Rock n' Roll history and will never be forgotten. REO SPEEDWAGON would also have their fair shares of ups and downs and highs and lows throughout their career with frequent personnel changes. But that, my fellow readers and reviewers, you will just have to stay tuned and read further about it at a later date. So here's to you Kevin, Gary, Bruce, Neal and Alan. Thanks for the great memories with hopefully still more to come. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have truly enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. REO SPEEDWAGON RULES! Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.

4 out of 5 stars The bridge from Fish to Infidelity.......2006-06-23

Call it 4 and a half out of 5. This is easily the most underrated album in the catalog, but some of the "harder rocking" moments sound a little, well, funny. I became a fan in 1981, when I was 11, and Hi Infidelity was the first one I got. I got a bunch of back catalog REO albums within a year, and eventually moved on to other artists, but I've always enjoyed listening to REO from time to time and aside from Hi Infidelity, this is one I keep coming back to. "Heavy On Your Love" sounds like REO's take on Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" (one of the unintentionally funny moments before a solo finishes the song). "I Need You Tonight" has CSN harmonies, and "Take Me" isn't a cover of the Kiss tune, but could have been a Kiss tune. It's a catchy song that manages to overshadow Kevin Cronin sounding like a rock star too high on himself. Again, funny. The best song on this album is easily "Meet Me on the Mountain", just a great song that sounds like it recalls your first crush from junior high with all the innocense intact. Great solo at the end of the song, too. The rest of the songs are pretty damn good, too, and I didn't even mention the two that typically show up on compilations. Hey, if you liked Hi Infidelity, you'll like this one, too. And if you enjoyed "You Can Tune a Piano...", you'll love this one. Definitely worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Songwriting Perfection.......2007-03-02

after listening to Aerosmith's great album 'Get A Grip' I thought there was no way they could top it or even equal it,and yet here I sit holding 'Nine Lives' in my hand
the songs are not quite as commercial as 'Get A Grip' what I mean to say is there is a bit more variety here,it doesn't feel like you've heard these songs before and yet every song is instantly memorable and stands on it's own...there is no filler here
there is a definite middle eastern flavor to some of the tracks which I would have sworn would be a horrible thing to do to any rock album but somehow Aerosmith pulls it off,on songs like 'Nine Lives' and 'Taste Of India' it just melts together perfectly...each song has it's own personality and as always the lyrics are humorous and thought provoking...'Falling In Love Is Hard On The Knees' is as catchy as anything they've ever done ("give me no lip,I've got enough of my own" is one of my favorite Steven Tyler lyrics),and when you think you know where the CD is going it goes into 'Hole In My Soul' one of the most beautiful heartfelt ballads ever written by anyone PERIOD! the song 'Full Circle' is one that draws you to listen to it several times to really catch the deep meaning of the lyrics (which all great songs do,they encourage you to find a meaning that applies to your personal life)...'Kiss Your Past Goodbye' does the same,it always makes me think about my childhood, the song really pushes all the buttons....then there is 'Pink' a testament to my favorite color and all the reasons why it is my favorite (winks) they lyrics are brilliant and humorous! but the absolute highlight and the biggest surprise on the CD (in my opinion) is the closing song, the masterpiece 'Fallen Angels' which is one of my absolute favorite Aerosmith songs ever...with a haunting melody and very well thought out lyrics...this song should be right up there with 'Dream On' when it comes to classic Aerosmith, all in all the band took a lot of chances on this CD and it really paid off...I would recommend this to any fan of rock music (or really anyone who appreciates good songwriting regardless of style) I would at the same recommend picking up Aerosmith's greatest hits for a taste of the 70s era Aerosmith as well,it is extremely different but just as good, just to give you a complete over all view of the band's talents

the upside - great songwriting and musicianship...varied sounds and styles that mesh well together...more cleaver thought out lyrics and hooks that'll have you humming for days

the downside - perhaps a tad too experimental for Aerosmith purists, other then that I think it's perfect

the bottom line - grab it for a sample of what great rock and roll should be...memorable,daring,and catchy, this is one of the best Aerosmith CDs ever released...run out and buy it,donutman says so!!!

5 out of 5 stars An Underrated Powerhouse!.......2006-07-16

And "The Farm," "Fallen Angels," and "Pink" are all unto themselves full songs of this kind of thing. Even if you disagree this is an ultimate effort by Aerosmith, do yourself a favor, just listen to the lyrics and appreciate all the lyrical poetry and prose they drop here. As written, this album might make for the best rap album that ended up a rock record.

The band has never sounded tighter. In fact, "tight" is a perfect word to describe this album. It moves at a fast clip through various topics, emotions and arrangements; each song doing its job expertly.

The same can be said for this album.

Maybe.

4 out of 5 stars Their Last Creative Album.......2006-04-23

Nine Lives is the last album Aerosmith did that boasted some true creativity.

I agree with the reviewer who bemoaned "I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing" being Aerosmith's #1 hit. I can't bear the song. Not because I hate ballady love songs...some of those are terrific. IDWMAT, on the other hand, is a horrible song, with no melody, corny lyrics, wall of sound instrumentation and screechy singing. Too bad they put this stinker on Nine Lives. I'm glad my version is the older one that doesn't have it.

What I find most interesting about this album are the drug songs The Farm and Crash. Aerosmith loudly denied any falling off of the wagon around this time, despite accusations by their former manager. So when I first heard the lyrics "There's a cockroach in my coffee, there's a needle in my arm" I was surprised. The song is The Farm, which is about the quest to get out of "Oz" (drug addiction?) and back to the "farm" (rehab?). The band did return to rehab during the making of this album; the reason they gave was to get into counseling to keep from breaking up.

And then there's Crash, which pounds one over the head with the "falling off the wagon" imagery. "Hanging from the stairs too long I think I'm coming down it's time to crash. Doing tons of colon blow, stuffing it in every hole, mile high, so am I, watching Jimi kiss the sky.... Blanche and Marcia Resnick put their marmite with their has (wicked laugh)." Of course, none of this necessarily means anyone actually fell off the wagon around the time of the making of this album, but it's odd for proudly sober band to include a triumphant wicked laugh in a drug song.

What I love about these songs is the raw honesty in them. They pull no punches. They neither promote drug use (well... aside from the laugh) nor berate it, they just explain, respectively, the experience of being addicted and wanting to get clean; and of falling off the wagon with no apologies at least for that moment. Both songs express what it's like to feel like you can't control yourself, and that in itself is enough of an anti-drug message. No preaching necessary.

I don't get the review that described Crash as a pop-rock song. I've heard everything from Olivia Newton John to Metallica to Bauhaus and if Crash is pop, I'm a quarterback for the Miami Dolphins. It sounds more like "70's hard rock meets speed metal" than anything else.

There are other good songs on the album too, such as "Something's Gotta Give" and "Kiss Your Past Goodbye," which contains one of the best guitar solos in the history of the band. Unfortunately, some fan favorites like "Pink" do nothing for me.

I don't like most of Aerosmith's 80's-an-onward hit ballads and I love their early albums, especially the first two, so a prior reviewer's claim that it's guaranteed a fan of the early work will hate this album ain't necessarily so. It's been seven years and they haven't come up with anything as good; not even the recent blues album has the edge that Nine Lives does. I recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars I used to love it..........2005-11-08

but now I hate it. I remember, I had it like 2 years ago; i was not that much into Aerosmith back then. I owned Nine Lives and the live album Little South Of Sanity. I loved them both, and propably heard NL on the tape like 1,000000 times.

The music sounded so great to Me, and i really enjoyed it. But now, I became a hardcore fan of Aerosmith, got all their 70s stuff, and I can honestly say THIS SUCKS!! It is not the true raw rock n' roll music They used to play! this album is just full of crappy pop songs with no real Aero touch to it. The pseudo pop-rockers (Crash, Nine Lives) don't do much to Me. Hole In My Soul and Pink are the best songs here, but those also sound somewhat poppy; I would enjoy them, if Aerosmith did not record them, but other band do so. I understand that the guys are just getting old, and with all the respect I think their appearance on the stage now, when they are 50+ years old, seems commercial to me. They may give powerful performances, but they are no longer young, fresh, raw, and lack potential.

If You don't like rock n' roll and prefer the poppy years of Aerosmtih, then this is for You. But if You are fan of their early career You will hate it; I guarantee it.

5 out of 5 stars Some incredible and some not so incredible stuff........2005-09-12

Well first i am a huge Aerosmith fan. So i am a bit biased but i do know when music stinks and this album doesnt have one horrible song on it, just a couple of dissapointing ones that have potential and miss it. So here's my review
1. Nine Lives: Aerosmith really knows how to start off albums with a bang ( ie Toys in the Attic, Rats in the Cellar, Draw the Line, Young Lust and Eat the Rich) This one is no different. Sure the cats meow at the begining can get a bit annoying but when you get passed that its a incredibly good and hard rocking song with some great lyrics and great guitars. Its a shame they dont throw this in live still. 10/10
2.Falling In Love Is So hard on the Knees: A typical Aerosmith song with sexual ennuendo. A great video accompanyed this single. Great riff and a really good song. 9/10
3.Hole In My Soul: I am not one for the "softer" side of Aerosmith as much as some so this song dissapoints me a bit, however as far as ballads go this one has a deep feel to it. You can relate to the meaning of the song. But its not the same as What it Takes and the trio from gag. It just doesnt have that same feel to it. No wonder y they pulled it from the set pretty fast. 6.5/10
4.Taste of India: The first time i heard this song i loved it and for a while it was my favorite off the album. But the more i listen to it the less i am into it. Its a little different sounding but in a good way. I just cant get into it as much. 6/10
5.Full Circle: A good song could have done more with it though. 7/10
6.Somethings Gotta Give: I love this song. Its got a really fun vibe to it. And has a definte Aero feel to it 8/10
7.Aint That A Bitch: In my opinion this is one of their few true masterpieces since pump. Such an underated song. 30/10
8.The Farm: Another song that is underated it is very rocking song that always gets me going. 10/10
9.Crash: I like this song but not as much as the others. Just doesnt seem to move me to much. Not bad but not great either. 6/10
10.Kiss Your Past Goodbye: I think this is a great song that should still be played in their sets sometimes today. 9/10
11.Pink. I think this song is okay. Nowhere near how good alot of people think it is. It was one of their biggest hits in the 90's. It is better live than on cd. 7/10
12.Attitude Adjustment: This song has it all great guitars good drumming and great lyrics. Should be played live. 10/10
13.Fallen Angels: I happen to think this is a great song with good lyrics my only problem with this song is that aerosmith made it. I think it is to sappy and poppy for them. Its an okay way to end an album but still shouldnt be an aero song. 5/10

Album Description

Sacramento-based blues, swing and jump masters Little Charlie & The Nightcats have much in common with their feline counterparts. They take great (musical) leaps and always land on their feet, they're constantly on the prowl (gigging all over the world), and, with all of the various styles of music they play, they seem to have many lives. Their new CD, NINE LIVES, is the ninth album of their remarkable career.

It's been over 30 years since world-class musicians guitarist Little Charlie Baty and harmonicist/vocalist/songwriter Rick Estrin first teamed up and took hard Chicago blues, jump, Texas swing and jazz and mixed it with rockabilly, proto-rock'n'roll, jumping jive, bebop and Estrin's sharply original lyrics, creating a sound one critic described as "Charlie Christian playing in Little Walter's band." Their utter mastery of American roots music is fueled by Baty's jaw-dropping guitar acrobatics and driven by Estrin's captivating original songs, cutting vocals and brilliant harmonica playing. The new CD, NINE LIVES, features 13 original songs—including three smoking instrumentals—and showcases the band's constantly growing repertoire and chops.

5 out of 5 stars A classic blues display.......2006-01-29

After seeing this rated in the top ten blues releases for 2005 in a local blues magazine I purchased this in a promo bin and gave it a spin.
I've listened to Little Charlie and the Nightcats since 1986 when Aligator Records was starting to establish itself and all I can say is without even looking at their catalog Little Charlie has to be their biggest seller year in and year out.
This Cd is as good as it gets, not a clunker in the bunch and please don't get me started on the sound,it is big and bassy. This offering is right up there neck and neck with "Night Vision" for the best they have done. I'm not saying their other CD's are not good because trust me each one has some great stuff on it but these two are exceptional, the kind of stuff you want to tell people to buy when they say "I just don't see what people see in the blues." In life what you do for a living it's all about consitencey, being able to produce day in and day out ,year in and year out and how the hell Rick Estrin comes up with this stuff year after year is a mystery maybe he and Robert Johnson share with many other musicians.
But for now buy this CD and see what good blues is all about. How good is this CD? I would pay full price for it,and I never pay full price for anything.

4 out of 5 stars Little Charlie delivers a big punch.......2005-10-02

The Nightcats deliver a strong performance on this bluesy, swing album. The humor is present throughout with a great vibe.

3 out of 5 stars Must be Good Live But............2005-08-29

This CD is full of Cliche Blues and rock and roll..Yes I can see them being great if you had a few brews in you at your local watering hole..But this album has week songs ..Rick Estrin's
voice is weak and plays harmonica like Charlie Mussel White "light"..Great tone without the technique or aggressiveness..Now if this group had a leader like John Hammond say, they would be a adequate back up band and this album would be better...But as it is... its OK
..I first heard the instrumental Slap Happy which rocks and made me go out and buy this record..Guitarist and Leader Little Charlie Batty plays a great guitar but is not featured enough..I would have enjoyed this album better with some quality cover songs and alot more guitar playing..These guys are tight and professional but ultimately the material doesn't move me..
But decide for yourself ..It is worth a listen.

Black Box may be one of the preeminent record labels for modern composers, but that doesn't mean its music can't be soothing. On The Calm, we get a 17-track sampling of some lesser-heard 20th-century pieces that are all (you guessed it) calming. Paul Honey's atmospheric track from Two Days, Nine Lives sets the opening tone for this disc, while tracks featuring the music of Erik Satie and Olivier Messiaen are a little less predictable but still soothingly meditative. Arvo Pärt's "Spiegel im Spiegel" gives a listener a hint of his "holy minimalism" style of composing; it's a gorgeous piece and well-played by violinist Rebecca Hirsch. John Adams's electronic keyboard-based "Alone ... again or at last" is an odd closer; it sounds more like smooth jazz than classical music. Still, as classical compilations go, this set is one of the most eclectic and interesting available. --Jason Verlinde

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Terrific, rarely heard music.......2002-07-06

The title of this compilation is incredibly accurate IF you enjoy modern music. It doesn't really fit the traditional, mainstream definition of relaxing music -- nice, quiet Mozart or Vivaldi, for example. It does, however, feature beautiful, powerful, sublime modern music. Each track is a revelation, from the more familiar Messiaen and Satie to the rest of the album, all pieces that I had not heard before. Paul Honey, Joseph Curiale, and James MacMillan all deserve a wider audience. Hopefully, their inclusion on this compilation will help them gain that audience.

5 out of 5 stars A Strong Bonnie Record!.......2006-01-18

If this lp had sold better I bet the reviews for this would be different...

Nine Lives is a great record from Bonnie Raitt, just because it's a different sounding record from her doesn't mean it isn't good.. this has a great 80's sound which shows what was happening musically during this time period and Bonnie vocals are strong, 'No Way To Treat A Lady' is a great rocker!
'Who but a fool' has a nice groove(this was also recorded by Gladys Knight & The Pips on their 'All Our Love' lp),
'Crime of passion' what a story...'Stand up to the night' & 'Excited' great 80's sounding sound..

and the wonderful country flavored 'Angel'.

and my favorite 'All Day, All Night' how I love this song!!
Nine Lives is one of my favorite Bonnie records, I would like for her to do another CD with this type of sound. This record has been unfairly reviewed through the years, if you don't have this one add it to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars is not enough!.......2004-11-17

This is definitely Bonnie's hardest rocking release to date. It also is one of the best produced and features some of the best musicians in the business augmenting these incredible and catchy tunes. This album features Bill Payne of Little feat (the best session keyboardist in the business), Micheal Landau (the best session guitarist in the business, Lenny Castro (the most famous percussionist in the business, and the "legendary" Tower of Power horn section! Need i say more? I have been a fan of Bonnie's for years and, along with "Green Light", this is my favorite recording by her. Just listen to the first three song samples and you won't need anymore convincing. The slide guitar fill-ins on "Come Running Back to Me" are the most tastefull I've ever heard. I would love to see and hear her perform some of these songs live. I hope the video tapes are sitting in a vault somewhere, waiting to be released. How anybody could give this CD only one star is beyond me. I guess they are more comfortable with the rough raw blues woman image of her....sittin in the corner, chewing tobacco, picking her nose, playing country blues on a one string dobro, and tootin during every chorus!

4 out of 5 stars A UNDER RATED BONNIE RAITT CD.......should be 4 1/2 stars.......2004-05-17

I've had this CD for years,it was my frist Bonnie Raitt CD. I'd play it all the time. I disagree with the reviewed that gave one only 1 star, this CD has a lot of GREAT SONGS like,NO WAY TO TREAT A LADY,RUNNIN BACK TO ME,CRIME OF PASSION and others .....I think this CD was over looked by the music industry, (a canidate for a grammy). If you like her Grammy CD's like,NICK OF TIME,AND LUCK OF THE DRAW,than you'll like this one, so buy it,and you'll hear Great songs that you just don't hear on the radio. I also love her other CD's that has Blues & Blues/Rock songs on it.......I'm waiting for a CD that has ALL BLUES,BLUES/ROCK on it from Bonnie....I would buy it up in a hart beat,a good title would be, THE QUEEN OF SLIDE(because she so great at side guitar),or THE QUEEN OF BLUES. Bonnie's helping keeping the blues alive!!! Have a Great time Shopping.

1 out of 5 stars Nine lives she's got.......2002-02-18

Every 70's artist should be allowed one bad album in the 80's. Bonnie Raitt used it up here and moved on to much greater things, eg Nick Of Time & the Grammys.
First time on CD though, so it's great for fans.

3 out of 5 stars End of the line.................2000-05-01

I have to agree with the other reviews in regards to the overall quality of this. The sound of this whole mixed bag of tunes was way off for Bonnie Raitt and I believe she did what she could to regroup herself after the dissapointment in not being able to release her "Tounge and Groove" project in 1983 and only some of the songs made it to this, for the most part, failed effort. Everytime I hear "True love is hard to find" and hear the great Sippie Wallace singing background

vocals along with Bonnie in her last years will forever bring a smile to me. Those were strange times, trying to be heard next to the likes of all the wild music coming out from The Cure, The Cars to Echo to The Thompson Twins, Culture Club, Cyndi Lauper etc, Bonnie refused to be sold as a sexual artist and she suffered because the music seemed to be all about gimmicks and video flash. This was a very low point in Bonnies career and I think she pulled herself together once she got away from Warner Bros. and committed herself to what would be her greatest years to come throughtout the 1990's

This is the Boogie Kings after they got fat and Clint West dropped out and they went on tour all the way to Vegas. Used to rock and sweat to this group at the Bamboo Hut on Galveston Beach. Some of the best Blue-eyed soul from the late 50's and early 60's. Check out Clint West, the Swamp Legend for some great late 50's Southwest Louisiana gumbo and belly-rubbing music, the original Boogie Kings.

I first saw nine lives three years ago at the wetlands where they were opening for H2O. Ive been hooked ever since. Rob has an incredible voice, with insightful lyrics. The band is rocking, albeit subtley. The demo disc ruled for world. And this album is THAT much better.

get the album. rock out to "paperboy".
