In the short time since they grouped together a few years ago to form their sensationally successful trio, the Irish Tenors have already put out an impressive array of recordings and DVDs, including some bona fide gooseflesh-inducing live concert performances. So, if you still have the enviable pleasure of discovering these amazing vocalists--or want to turn a friend on to their musical charms--this compilation CD will do the trick nicely. It brings together such classics as "Danny Boy," "Toora Loora Looral," "Last Rose of Summer," and "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" (featuring John McDermott)--all rendered with the kind of passionate, heartfelt, and harmonious crooning that is their signature style, whether they're singing as an ensemble or as highlighted soloists. And even if you have the complete Irish Tenors, this anthology includes several numbers not found on their previously released CDs. Hard to think of a sweeter treat for a fan of singing too good to ever go out of fashion. --Sarah Chin
Customer Reviews:
Irish at it's best........2007-05-07
This album is really the number two album from this trio. It is very good and well worth the investment. The five star album by The Irish Tenors would have to be Heritage. Both albums rate high in my book.
Irish Magic.......2006-08-21
This is my first CD of the Irish Tenors. And what a joy! I played it as soon as it arrived. I like the blend of their voices, the passion and enthusiasm they bring to this CD. What I find is a real treat is the words to all the songs are in the booklet.I love this CD.
Just got your Kleenex.......2005-12-25
I suggest a box of Kleenex for each person in the room when you play this CD or VHS recording. Mom won't let me play it anymore because she...well, you know what I mean.
Wonderful!.......2005-12-12
When it's cold and frightful here, I play The BOYZ!
So wonderful. So much fun.
Up here in backwash Maine, there ain't much, believe me. But these guys are great. Sincere, care about what they're doing, true artists.
Ah, to go to Ireland again. Well, not unless the price of natural gas recedes!
The Very Best of the Irish Tenors is just that!.......2005-01-22
This recording is wonderful. Ronan's "last Rose of summer" is unique, the Percy French medley shows all three in great voice, Finbar's Maggie is wonderful and the laurels have to go to Anthony for his magnificent rendition of "She moved through the fair", wow!!!!
Well worth buying.

Karl Jenkins's The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace is a departure from his Adiemus recordings into the more conventional territory of large-scale choral and orchestral writing, though his customary passion for mixing languages remains in full force with texts in English, Latin, and French. Jenkins has said that The Armed Man was inspired by the "L'Homme armé" masses that were popular in the 16th century, and he makes this debt clear with passages written in a neat pastiche of Palestrina-style renaissance polyphony. There are also echoes of earlier and later styles, including plainchant, medieval ballads, John Barry-style horn writing (think Goldfinger), and even a direct quote from Rigoletto (the choir imitates wind sounds at one point as in Act 3 of the Verdi opera). The smorgasbord manages to hold together, probably because Jenkins's obvious sincerity shines through every note. The London Philharmonic Orchestra plays beautifully, and treble Tristan Hambleton performs his solo with ethereal clarity. The National Youth Choir sings with vigor and accuracy, even if the young sopranos sound a little thin at the top of their range. If you liked the soundtrack to The Mission, this should press all the right buttons. --Warwick Thompson
Customer Reviews:
Accessible summation many musical styles.......2007-06-12
Karl Jenkins is a contemporary British composer perhaps most famous for his music for the de Beers diamond commercial--the score that sounds like Vivaldi but isn't.
In this commissioned Mass Jenkins sets out to sum up War and Peace in the 20th Century (it was a millennial project) and he mimics if not just the music of the 20th C. at least the music that we listened to in the century, at times you'll think Faure, at other times Monteverdi (although the liner notes say "Palestrina.") The overall effect is like a score for a movie, but a good score at that. The broad selection of texts is itself derivative from Britten's War Requiem and in a tip to multiculturalism also includes a Muslim call to prayer (somewhat pretentious in a Christian Mass, I think).
The performances are strong with the National Youth Choir remarkably polished for their age and experience. Jenkins conducts and one could say "over conducts"--as others have noted, the emphases seem a bit forced and many numbers end with a sudden staccato, an odd effect. The recording is the result of multiple takes in many different studios and the resultant mastering reflects this: The CD in no way sounds like an actual performance of the work. As John Lennon said of one Beatles album, "Play loud" and it's impressive.
One man's pastiche is another man's familiar favorite and despite the lack of orginality this Mass is likely to have enduring popularity.
Simply wonderful and moving.......2007-01-11
What a wonderful way to remember the last century! What a way to meditate on the prospect of peace or war in this one. This selects from the styles and melodies most primal and meaningful. At least it seems so while listening to them. I first became familiar with Karl Jenkins Mass when it was selected for Sacred Concert on Sunday morning and was so taken with it I almost stayed in the car to hear the end rather than go into church from the parking lot! I searched for it at our local libraries that afternoon and not finding it there took the plunge to order it from Amazon to add to my already overstuff Amazon furnished house. With the way this century is going so far this mass has good reason to be played over and over again.
Jenkin's "The Armed Man" - old theme, new sound. .......2007-01-11
This a powerful, brilliant new musical plea for peace based on a very old, much used theme from centuries ago. The performance and recording are worthy of the music. While some passages are supremely beautiful, this is not elevator music - some juxtapositions of the sections are quite jarring (deliberatly so). However, it is a deeply satisfying work, well worth a careful listen.
Fantastic Choral.......2006-09-01
Once I heard a piece on the radio I had to have this CD. I was not disappointed at all.
There are a couple of songs on this CD that will blow you away!
I play this CD almost evry day. It is fantastic. I lend it to people and they want to keep it.
If you are into choral music, this is the CD to get.
Is it Bach, is it Mozart or maybe it's Haydn; NO it's Jenkins!!!!.......2006-08-19
This is one of the most beautiful Masses I have every heard and will have the pleasure to perform! It is truly a work of art. The Orchestral parts are just as important as the Vocal score. In most movements the orchestra doubles the vocal parts. Jenkins has brilliantly crafted a masterpiece and the power of the words, taken from many sources including the Bible and Rudyard Kipling makes this one of the greatest works of our time.
You must hear this Mass!!!! A must to perform!!!! A must to own!!!!

Customer Reviews:
Not My Style.......2007-05-11
This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!
Rockin' Western Collection.......2006-08-28
For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.
Hard to Find Great Western Themes .......2006-03-16
This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.
Western Music.......2005-07-29
I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."
A great follow-up.......2003-08-29
This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

Customer Reviews:
Great movie, better soundtrack.......2007-05-19
I just recently saw this movie and the only thing I could think about afterwards was that I had to get this soundtrack. I'm not usually a big fan of movie soundtracks, but this cd is unlike any other out there, soundtrack or not. The use of strings and carnaval type instruments is completely unique and makes this a must by for any fan of music.
great collection of unusual music.......2007-05-07
Rented the movie on reccomendation from Netflix, it was pretty good. But the music was the star of the show. The soundtrack follows the course of the movie pretty closely, it's kind of like listening to the movie. Each track brings to mind a specific scene in the movie. One of the highlights is the ecclectic treatment of Burt Bacharach's "Close to You". Most will remember the super-sweet Carpenter's version, but this interpretation was the main reason I bought the music. Unusual augmented chord progressions and almost minimalist format (complete with the mechanical background sounds made by the female jack-in-the-box-like, life-sized, mostly metal toy dressers) make the tune as captivating as in the movie when they 'convert' the trapped Helena into the black princess. Great music to play while relaxing, too.
Supurb.......2007-03-08
This soundtrack is truly a delight to listen to. It ranges from quirky circus music to deep and melodic mysterious tunes. It is a great CD to relax to and to use as background music for most any relaxing time hanging out with friends.
Amazing!.......2007-02-24
This is a very good soundtrack to a very good movie. The music is amazingly composed and is nice to listen to.
excellent.......2007-01-17
This CD is excellent! All the music from the movie in its entirety, all the songs are complete songs, and the songs are all top notch compositions.

I wish this guy's name wasn't Percy........2007-03-25
If you are an early baby boomer like me and like movie themes and other more conservative music from the 50's and 60's (and think that most of today's music is c__p), you probably will appreciate this CD. Actually, I was surprised at the number of great songs, many of which I had long forgotten, that are on this set of recordings. Still, I am sorry to say that it was difficult for me to buy a CD of songs from a guy named Percy.
Percy Faith's Greatest Hits.......2007-03-08
I purchased this CD as a gift for my husband. His favorite song is "The Theme from Moulin Rouge". All of the songs on the CD are good and bring back alot of memories. If you are a baby boomer you will definitely enjoy this!
Reaching for the stars.......2006-09-18
What can you say? Percy Faith's "Theme From A Summer Place" sends you into orbit if you have any concept at all of those halcyon days of the late 50s-aearly 60's.
Even if you don't like it, you have to admit it's soothing & almost edifying, especially in today's morass of worldy troubles.
Theme For A Summer Place.......2006-08-13
During the late 1960's here in Houston when I was a little boy, one of the network television affiliates used PERCY FAITH's fantastic "THEME FROM A SUMMER PLACE" as their music theme for their afternoon matinee movies[reruns] which featured many of Hollywood's classic movies in glorious Black & White from the era of the 1930's, 1940's and into the 1950's - the Golden Age of Hollywood Films. I got to see some of the greatest classic films of all time and many remain personal favorites to this day, and especially the sound of "THEME FROM A SUMMER PLACE", which was played relentlessly during commercial breaks and has become such a great memory. Those were the days indeed: Mae West; The Marx Brothers; Laurel & Hardy; Gregory Peck; Judy Garland; Original WWII Era movies and much more, which I actually got to see long after their heydays, but, better late than never! It took me years to figure out what orchestra played on this dynamic recording, but, eventually, I discovered Percy Faith, and what a grand artist he was - God Bless Him. Everytime I hear this wonderful theme song, it takes me back to those long gone, but not forgotten, Saturday or Sunday mid-afternoon TV Movie matinees from my childhood. This collection includes many other memorable and golden treasure recordings from Percy Faith and His Orchestra.
Everyone should appreciate Percy Faith.......2006-03-27
This cd is wonderful. It provides the warmth of the music performed at the time it was created. I enjoy it tremendously.

nice background music.......2007-06-13
This is a CD you don't mind listening to over and over. It is ideal when you have company in the house or when you want to relax.
Five - Perhaps Six Stars!!.......2006-04-05
This collection is worthy of SIX stars! This is the most enjoyable, highest-quality Percy Faith collection I have seen. Not only is the collection about as "Ultimate" as you could desire, it brings back in glorious stereo quality some of my favorite albums. The various tracks from his "Young Lovers" series are utterly fantastic!!
This is it!.......2003-04-01
This is the best compilation of Mr. Faith's orchestrations I have seen yet. Some of the music on this CD I have heard on easy listening radio stations in the 1970s that I have not seen released on CD until this set came out, such as the lush and velvety rendition of Burt Bacharach's tune "Always Something There to Remind Me", with great strings and brass. This is a great set and well worth the money.

Gorgeous........2006-07-25
I can't help but become nostagic about Percy Faiths version of "A Summer Place". For me it brings back such vivid childhood memories and also brings about an instant feeling of security.
If there is one tune that makes the ultimate statement about the warm, lustrious, happy months of summer this is the one.
Percys arrangements involving lush chromatic counter melodies and pizzicato violin strings were the best.
"Theme from a Summer Place" was almost the highpoint of the movie itself.
"Ebb Tide" is also handled beautifully.
If you require a legendary Desert Island Disc then this is the one.
They don't make music like this any more.............2005-10-09
I had the old LP of Percy Faith's greatest hits. Just browsing on Amazon.com, I came across this album, and decided to purchase it after listening to the sample tunes. I really love the song "Theme From a Summer Place". If you really enjoy good music and don't care for some of junk that is being release nowadays, give this one a try. I think you'll enjoy it. It's a great album to just unwind to after a hectic day.
Excellent Remakes of Original Percy Faith Arrangements.......2002-03-21
This CD is a great compilation of some of Percy Faith's most popular arrangements. The sound quality is excellent, as is the track selection. It includes versions of most of his charted songs, most notably, "Theme from a 'Summer Place'" and "Moulin Rouge." Purists should note that this CD was recorded in 1994, almost twenty years after Faith's death. In my opinion, such re-recordings rarely compare to the originals and generally have little value, except to the record company. However, since Faith was primarily an arranger, this CD works remarkably well and serves as an excellent representation of what he was about. Don't be surprised if you find yourself seeking out original Faith performances (of which there are many available on CD) after listening. All in all, a worthwhile purchase for anyone interested in the easy listening format or in quality instrumental music.
A Summer Place Percy Faith.......2002-03-04
This is one Faith album you have to own if your a fan of his. Most of his prettiest songs are on this cd including my favorite Arrivedercia Roma.To date this is the only Faith cd you will find Arrivedrcia Roma on unless they reissiue Bon Voyage which isn't likely no time soon.Nick Perido does the conducting here but on most songs you can't tell a difference. He sounds just like Faith.A good reissiue by Ranwood.

Customer Reviews:
In These Metal Days.......2007-06-11
With this album, Brian Eno left behind pop songwriting to embark upon his "ambient music" period. B&AS makes a wonderful farewell to pop music and stands as his most complete pop album. Although the structure of the original album has been lost with the move to CD format, it is worth remembering that the first 5 songs appeared on side 1 of the album and the remainder on side 2. Viewed from this perspective, it is tempting to relate the title to the album structure: side 1 is wild and manic, while side 2 is calm and melodic. There are parallels in the number of songs and the number of instrumentals. Although Eno never considered hiself a musician, his underrated singing is put to great use on this album, and his songwriting skill is clearly in evidence. Others have given detailed descriptions of the songs, so I will restrict myself to the highlights: the typical lyrical silliness of "Backwater," hearing Kurt Schwitters's infamous "Ur Sonata" -- and more silly lyrics -- on "Kurt's Rejoinder" (presaging Eno's found music experiments of "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts") and the placid beauty of "Spider and I."
Fans of Eno's ambient music will find much to like here and fans who come by way of Roxy Music and/or "Here Come the Warm Jets" will find a quieter, more thoughful and complex album in "Before and After Science." This is music that rewards repeated listening and which, nearly 30 years after its debut, still seems timely and interesting.
four and one half stars........2007-02-25
quirky funk (no one receiving), fingerpoppin' pop (backwater), early leanings toward ambient sounds (energy fools the magician and through hollow lands), and a generous helping of gorgeous slow-tempo numbers have this album from 1977 jumping all over the place, which is fine with me. this is creative music that is easily accessible, completely listenable. "another green world" seems to be the eno album from his song-based (pre-ambient) period that most people latch onto as his masterpiece, but i would argue that "before and after science" gives that outstanding lp a run for its money. great art-rock. highly recommended.
A diamond in the rough of transition.......2006-06-03
Most reviewers have pointed out the presence of upbeat songs, ethereal lyrical explorations, and all out ambience on this album, and it's definitely full of gorgeous examples of all three. Although this is often classified as a transitional album because it houses so many varieties of songs, I think they work stunningly well together; While his first two solo albums are truly wonderful, the constant up-tempo pace was a bit relentless. "Another Green World" introduced the ambience to stunning effect, but I think the amalgamation of each style is fully realized on this album. The styles of song are interspersed just enough to balance the album out, and really "take you places". Plus, the songs in each style on this album can certainly rival the best of Eno's previous three albums: "Backwater" and "kurt's Rejoinder" match any highlight off "Warm Jets" or "Tiger Mountain", while "Here he Comes" and "Spider and I" easily match "Another Green World" in pure ethereal aesthetic. Moreover, everything on this album is quite catchy, and almost certainly mood-inducing. Just get it already!
Man in transition........2005-06-14
Brian Eno's "Before and After Science", his last song-based album until the about-to-be-released (June, 2005) "Another Day on Earth" is in many ways the album you would hope it would be, reflective of his past, pointing in some ways to the future, very much texture-oriented music. On the other hand, while it has its moments, it fails to capture the immediacy of "Here Come the Warm Jets" or the beauty of "Discreet Music", but its still a great listen.
The album is really two sides, the first being more energetic, the second being a bit more ambient in feel. On the first side, there are three things that immediately draw you in-- the first is an overt use of vocal harmonies-- Eno's vocals are almost always in a harmony form with two or three voices singing the line ("No One Receiving", melodic pop song "Here He Comes"). The second is bassist Percy Jones, whose playing on a few of the tracks, in particular "Kurt's Rejoinder", is nothing short of astonishing. The third is the use of space-- look no further than standout "Energy Fools the Magician", where the four piece (Eno, Jones, drummer Phil Collins back when he was a drummer and guitarist Fred Frith) manipulate space as a fifth instrument to amazing effect.
The second side is much more in line with the ambient work of Eno's most recent albums-- a overwhelming feel of haunted ambient with vocals dominates. The entire side is full of fantastic material, from the haunted "Julie With..." to the lyrically brilliant and dark "Spider and I".
Overall, its a rewarding album that finds an artist caught in between forms, but even in transition, his brilliance shines through. Recommended.
Another Eno World.......2005-03-24
The last in Eno's series of quirky, unique albums from the 70's before he moved totally into ambient music and expored his "rock" side only through production of other artists.
Like the titles that came before, Before and After Science finds Eno stringing together a series of offbeat numbers ranging from rock to pop to ambient and everything in between. This record was sequenced with most of the more ambient numbers at the end, unlike Another Green World's free admixture of styles. I personally liked the AGW way better, but fortunately we have the option these days of programming the songs in any order we want, so problem solved.
Eno's star-studded array of collaborators had become as legendary as his skewed sense of pop by this point, with everyone from Phil Manzanera to Phil Collins to Robert Fripp sitting in on this one. They were Eno veterans, but Eno's concurrent interest in German art-rock brings Can's Jaki Liebzeit and Moebius and Roedelius from Cluster to the table on Before and After Science.
My favourite moments: The atmospheric but too-short "Energy Fools the Magician" with the Brand X rhythm section of Percy Jones and Collins, with Fred Frith. The frantic new wave single "King's Lead Hat" (an anagram of Talking Heads) with Fripp. And all of the old "side 2" especially the beautiful "By This River" with Cluster. The piano has haunted me since I first heard it way-back-when, and I enjoy playing it myself. The closing "Spider and I" summons up a massive wall of synths-n-bass, and Eno's resigned vocal is quite fitting as he was about to leave the rock world (as a performer) for a very, very long time.
I have the earlier CD edition and to tell you the truth I don't notice anything radically different about the remaster, so the cheaper original CD might be a good bargain unless you're a real audiophile.

French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet has had a lifelong devotion to vocal repertoire, and it was inevitable that he would record an "opera without words" program. He is co-arranger of several selections on this disc, which is dedicated by Thibaudet to all the singers with whom he has performed. Listened to in one sitting, the disc is perhaps too much of a good thing. Savored a couple of tracks at a time, however, it offers considerable pleasure. Among today's big-name pianists, Thibaudet is one of those most frequently praised for "singing tone." He displays it exquisitely throughout this program, beginning with the initial track, a fantasy on two arias from Samson et Dalila. Among the other tracks, a few do disappointingly little to enhance what one would find in a piano-vocal score ("Vissi d'arte" is an obvious example). On the other hand, Thibaudet's full technical arsenal is magisterially deployed in "Soirée de Vienne," a concoction of Johann Strauss waltz themes including that of Die Fledermaus; a "sonata-fantasy" based on Madama Butterfly -- at 12 minutes, the longest track on the disc; and Louis Brassin's formidable arrangement of the "Ride of the Valkyries," which Thibaudet tosses off with staggering ease. -- Roger Pines
Album Description
Jean Yves Thibaudet brings a lifelong passion for opera to his new CD of irresistible operatic melodies: Aria - Opera Without Words, an album that combines the intimacy of the piano recital with the drama and romance of the opera house. Following the huge success of his recording of the complete solo piano music of Erik Satie, this new album is a very personal collection of timeless classics and new transcriptions - including several by Thibaudet himself. Aria - Opera Without Words includes arrangements of many of the best-loved arias of opera including Puccini's "Vissi d'arte" from Tosca and "O mio babbino caro" from Gianni Schicchi, and the sparkling "Jewel Song" from Gounod`s Faust. Thibaudet even provides a thrilling portrait of Wagner's mighty "Ride of the Valkyries." These performances are not just arrangements of popular classics, they are also piano works in their own right.
Customer Reviews:
Not Liszt.......2007-04-11
Jean-Yves Thibaudet's new recording is very pleasant to listen to. As expected, his playing is flawless and endlessly romantic in style; very poetic performances. His selection of repetoire is nice; however, the transcriptions themselves cannot compare to those by Liszt, in which Thibaudt dazzled listeners with his earlier recorded disc.
Overall, the playing is superb, the music is both warmly familiar and interesting and this is an excellent edition to the music lover's collection.
Opera lover.......2007-03-27
I enjoy listening to this CD mainly because I try to play these on the piano and this nonorchestral version emphasizes the melody better. The arrangements approach lounge music, but overall very nicely done. Not really for the avid opera lover, although I am--just have a different purpose for buying this.
Where's the Candelabra?.......2007-03-10
Strictly speaking, this is a recording for people who miss Liberace. It reduces opera classics to Andrew Lloyd Webber-esque Sunday brunch background musak. Dreadful.
music to relax .......2007-03-09
So easy to listen to. He plays so smoothly. Such a joy to hear.
Thibaudet Does It Again!.......2007-02-21
Sensitive and beautifully expressive playing, Thibaudet captures the essence of the singers art with his piano. Recording quality excellent.

Album Description
"Everything about this release by violinist Rachel Barton Pine is exceptional." --ClassicsToday [10/10] (on Scottish Fantasies)
"Recordings don't get any better than this." -- ClassicsToday [10/10] (on Brahms & Joachim Violin Concertos)
Chicago native Rachel Barton Pine was a child prodigy who began performing in public at age seven. Today she is one of America's most acclaimed violinists, as well as the best selling artist on Cedille Records. Maud Powell (1867-1920) was the premier female American violinist of her era, and she made numerous classic recordings between 1904 and 1919 that are still sought after by collectors. This CD is a tribute from one eminent American violinist to another, honoring Maud Powell for the tremendous positive influence she had on later American artists. All of the selections are works recorded originally by Powell, now able to be heard in contemporary sound. Many of the selections are seldom or never recorded elsewhere, and all are extremely accessible.
Customer Reviews:
Great Tribute--Wonderfully Performed.......2007-07-13
This recording is just plain fun! Rachel Barton Pine is one of my favorite young violinists, and this may be my favorite of her albums! Not only is the music exceptionally well chosen, Mrs. Pine's performances are top-notch across the board. As usual, her technique is wonderful. And the musicality of the performances leaves nothing to be desired. Just listen to the sweetness of her playing in Amy Beach's Romance! I can listen to this one track over and over and not become bored. Then contrast the fiery virtuosity Pine exhibits in Bellstedt's Caprice on Dixie. Just wonderful! Let's just say this disc is going to remain in my CD player for a long time! Highly, highly recommended.
