3 out of 5 stars MASTERING: NOT BAD, BUT NOT THE BEST.......2007-02-24

These Gott remastered discs sound decent, will probably sate the average person's TDN appetite, and being 2-fers, are a pretty good deal.

However, the TDN audio benchmarks are the 2002, 24-bit Universal Japan remasters of first five albums. If you are looking for THE best TDN audio, those CD's are a step above any and all other domestic and foreign versions available, including the Gott series.

Unfortunately, all five UJ-TDN titles went out-of-print shortly after their issue, and they have not been re-released. Hopefully, that situation will be rectified at some point in the future.

As all of the original TDN LP album covers were very creative & artistic productions, these albums would all also be a major candidate for CD LP-mini-sleeve packaging.

A sharp eye on eBay may turn these up. For reference, and double-checking with any potential seller, the OBI/spine catalog numbers are:

One - UICY-3370 Amazon link: One
Suitable For Framing - UICY-3371 Amazon link: Suitable for Framing
Captured Live At The Forum - UICY-3372
It Ain't Easy - UICY-3373 Amazon link: It Ain't Easy
Naturally - UICY-3374 Amazon link: Naturally

These masters may or may not be on UJ's TDN 2003 "The Collection", which is currently available, but I have not heard. The Japanese remasters are also superior to the domestic remastered 2004 "The Complete Hit Singles".

Again, as most people originally heard these songs coming out of an AM radio, they will probably be more than satisfied with the Gott's. They are certainly better than the horrid-sounding domestic MCA CD's, which are all derived from nearly 40-year-old LP-EQ'd masters.

However, while the spotlight was always cast on the singers, TDN had an amazing band, including an absolute genius in keyboard player Jimmy Greenspoon. The Japanese remasters allow the brilliance of that superb musicianship to be heard in greater detail and clarity than any other editions.

As an aside, while stars like Keith Emerson and Rick Wakeman however deservedly had the keyboard-god-limelight in that era, when you think about it, it's probably safe to state that no other keysman was heard by more people in that generation than Jimmy Greenspoon. Yes, the TDN vocals were unique and timeless, and I take nothing from those three talented cats, but JG was the glue that brought everything together.

I own approximately 5000 CD's, and "Out In The Country", with JG's evocative B3 melody, is in my top ten favorite songs of all time. The next time you listen to any TDN album, focus on his playing, and you'll get it.

I've also read his tell-all book. It's quite amazing that TDN was able to function, much less generate the top studio performances that comprised all those monster hits, in the virtually permanent drug-addled state they were in.

It is fortuitous that Jimmy Greenspoon not only conquered and survived his addictions, but that he still performs with TDN to this day, because there is no Three Dog Night without him.

5 out of 5 stars Two Classic 3 Dog Night Albums On One remastered Cd!.......2004-07-24

Three Dog Night appeared on the music scene in the late 60's and took the world by storm. Fronted by three lead singers Chuck Negron, Corey Wells and Danny Hutton (all who had their own unique style) and a terrific band featuring Floyd Sneed on drums, Mike Allsup on guitar, Jimmy Greenspoon on keyboards and Joe Schermie on bass, the band had more hit singles in the time they were together than any other band of the era. This excellent remastered cd includes Three Dog Night's first two albums "Three Dog Night" and "Suitable For Framing". Their debut album entitled simply "Three Dog Night" produced the hits "Nobody","Try A Little Tenderness" (a song originally sung by Otis Redding) and "One". The album was a combination of r&B and rock with numerous standouts (as well as the above mentioned hits) such as "Heaven Is In Your Mind" (written by Steve Winwood and Jim Capaldi), "Chest fever" which features Jimmy Greenspoon's superb organ/keyboards, and "The Loner" (written by Neil Young). Three Dog Night's second release "Suitable For Framing" produced the hits "Easy To Be Hard", "Eli's Coming" (written by Laura Nyro) and "Celebrate". Other excellent songs on the album included "Lady Samantha" (wriiten by Elton John and Bernie Taupin), "Feelin' Alright" (written by Dave Mason) and "Circle In For A landing" (written by Billy Preston). Included is a six page booklet with interesting information on the band and these two albums and colorful pictures. The sound quality is excellent due to remastering and the entire package is well put together in a jewel case which fits into a cardboard slip case. If you enjoy classic rock and/or are a Three Dog Night fan then this cd is a must have. Highly Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Grew Up with this one.......2003-06-11

This album has many of your favorite Three Dog Night tunes, plus the hauntingly beautiful Lady Samantha. Perhaps it was the music, perhaps it was the time in my life, but this album is one of the bright shining points of my early teen years.

If you like this one, also get their greatest hits, there are several beautiful songs you will remember. If I could describe this album in the fewest possible words, it would be
"the Best of my Memories, the Soundtrack for my adolescence".

5 out of 5 stars SUITABLE FOR YOUR COLLECTION.......2001-05-25

This is MY favorite 3DN cd. I remember listening to this on 8-track. Every song is a tri-vocal assault on the audible center of the brain. Lady Samantha and Circle For a Landing are 2 of their best. It's a shame that they are not radio friendly. the radio is the worst influence around. Get this cd. It's cheap in cost, but rich in treasure.

4 out of 5 stars Suitable For Purchasing.......2000-09-06

There are some good songs here, like the upbeat anthem "Celebrate", the sentimental ballad from the musical 'Hair' "Easy To Be Hard", covers by Laura Nyro and Elton John "Eli's Coming", "Lady Samantha". Three Dog Night also contributes with a couple of their own compositions as well, with the drum instrumental "King Solomon's Mines", and Danny Hutton's "Dreaming Isn't Good For You". This album put TDN on the map. Too bad "Suitable For Framing" isn't available domestically. Better purchase this version before it, too goes out of print.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST MASTERING AVAILABLE.......2007-03-20

If you're reading this, then you've found it: This 2002 Japan 24-bit remaster represents the best audio mastering from the dizzying number of Three Dog Night individual album and compilation CD's currently available.

The clarity in the Japanese remastering is astounding. Listening to any of the four studio album titles in the Japan UICY series ("One", "Suitable For Framing", "It Ain't Easy" and "Naturally") delivers a new appreciation for just how good the band behind the singers really was.

The Japanese versions are also superior to the Gott and Edsel "2-fers" that were released after these discs. You really can't appreciate how great these CD's are until you've directly compared one against any other release.

Unfortunately, the limited 2002 run of these titles have long since disappeared into the private collections of TDN fans long ago. These are very hard to find now, and often, especially on Amazon, Sellers have other inferior TDN versions mis-listed under the Japanese titles.

It is highly advisable to double-check with any potential seller claiming to have these rare discs. The OBI/spine catalog numbers are:

    Album Description

On April 19th, 1975, at Northern Illinois University, three musicians met in a milestone event from which emerged a unique, improvising trio with two pianos and South Indian percussion. Fortunately, it was recorded and excerpts released on a long out of print LP. This CD recaptures the essential essence of the entire evening of musical discovery with previously unreleased music recovered from digitally reprocessed tapes recently discovered in diverse states of preservation. Rosenboom and Floyd, formed a piano duo in the early 1970's from which emerged a unique style of structured improvisation. They employed a wide range of musical tools, including techniques for implementing forms that evolve gradually in performance time, but invoked them spontaneously in improvisation, rather than through pre-composition. All the music arose uniquely in each musical moment. In 19IV75, some material was also drawn from the first and second movements of Rosenboom's, The Seduction of Sapientia, and the second movement of Patterns for London.

Composed in 1972 for London's International Carnival of Experimental Sound, each of Patterns for London's three movements is a cyclical form with no beginning or end. Movement I is comprised of a circular progression of tonal modules, each defined by a set of ostinato chords and modal scales, all containing the common tone, A. These are expanded through improvisation.

This is a virtuosic solo mixing Sankaran's compositions with improvisation in the eight-beat cycle, Adi tala. It progresses through introductory and middle stages to modulating to six pulses per beat, called tisra gati, and finally, to an exciting fast pharan section. In the middle, a call and response idea is articulated with only one mrdangam, but sounds as if there are more. The entire solo is improvised in a traditional format in line with the spirit of the two-piano performances. Appropriately, Rosenboom joins in at the end with an accompanying pattern, like a return to the "head" in jazz.

Is Art Is is an infinite form, cyclical and open, without finite time-space boundaries, with equality of drone and impulse, interfusion of universal and particular, exploring open time-spaces and gradual processes. Composed originally in 1974 for Floyd's group, Electric Stereopticon, it is constructed much like a jazz tune with a head in twelve-beats, a middle section with patterns played in various phase relationships over a seven-beat ostinato, and a return to the "head" with overlapping themes. The rhythmic modules relate well to the language of Indian drumming, and Sankaran helped expand the form.

On one surviving tape, we discovered additional playing in which the trio improvises on material from drawn from the third movement of Rosenboom's Patterns for London and parts of his 1964 gradual process piece, Continental Divide. Sankaran played kanjira, a South Indian tambourine constructed with a wooden ring, one set of metal jingles, and a stretched membrane of lizard skin. This may have been recorded prior to the concert during a sound check. It is presented as a bonus snapshot of this trio's inventive musical spirit. (Suitably, perhaps, the reel ran out before the music ended, so we've made the music fly off into a suitable space.)
