glen miller greatest hits.......2007-05-20
I have enjoyed this cd verymuch since i got it. I have no faults with it.
Glenn Miller Greatest Hits.......2007-04-11
Glenn Miller is my all-time favorite of the big band musicians. I was only nine years old when Glenn Miller's plane was lost. However, my parents managed a boarding house for young military men and their wives. The men were stationed at what is now Ellsworth AFB, in Rapid City, SD. The wives wiled away their days playing board games, or playing the piano and singing this type music. It is a wonderful memory for me. My father was a huge Glenn Miller fan, too, so we listened to his music frequently. This is an excellent collection of his hits; it would be hard to select a favorite, although "In the Mood" and 'Moonlight Serenade" would be at the top of the list.

Customer Reviews:
It's Unbelievable How Music Could Be This Good.......2006-06-24
The Dorsey brothers and Glen Miller were the greatest musicians of the World War II era. They kept so much of the public entertained during the war and gave so many Americans (and their allies) hope. Not even Joan Baez and Bob Dillan and their anti-Vietnam War songs are this good. This music is much better than the garbage that people call music today.
Tommy Dorsey -Best All Around Dance Band!.......2005-05-09
The Dorsey band could do everything. The hottest Swing and the smoothest ballads and the liveliest pops and novelties. His band was every inch as good as The Miller, Goodman and Shaw bands and at times, even better!
Dorsey had several bands and his pre 1940 band is very different than his band of 1940 - 1946. The '40s band had a more dynamic sound to it, especially in the Swing instrumentals! Plus...all those great vocalists - Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, Connie Haines and the Pied Pipers vocal group, not to mention Dick Haymes, Stuart Foster and the great Clark Sisters aka The Sentimentalists.
The recordings on the CD above are a mixture of 'both' of TD's band of the era.
All the sides on the CD are choice and the only reason I have rated the CD 4 stars out of 5 is because my 'personal best' are not all on there!
And with all due respect to the reviewer below, the version of "Opus One" on this CD *is* the original 1944 recording when TD was featuring a big string section in his band. "Inferior"? No such way.

Great sound quality, superb music.......2003-09-30
So many "greatest hits" compilations miss the mark either in quality or song selection. But this disc lives up to its billing as the "Best" of the Dorsey orchestra. It kicks off with one of the stellar and swingiest tunes of the Big Band era, "Opus Number One" (though this version is inferior to the more famous "single" version). It's hard to listen to this song and not appreciate the brilliant arrangement and musicianship displayed here. Along with Goodman's "Sing, Sing Sing" and Glenn Miller's "In the Mood" this has got to be in the top three of any Big Band all-time greatest list.
It's a pity that Dorsey has been somewhat forgotten today and shoved aside in preference of Benny, Glenn and Artie. Was he as good as those giants? No, but this disc shows that his band could swing, had a phenomenal young vocalist named Sinatra and that Tommy's trombone playing wasn't half bad. This is a must have album for anyone serious about the Big Band era.
absolutely marvellous!.......2003-09-09
They're all here, his big hits and some more: "Opus one", "Indian Summer" and of course "Song of India", and they were songs to get us through a very dark decade. And we thank English radio broadcasting for bringing these tunes to a country where German Schlagers were all over the airwaves in the early 40's. If you loved these tunes by Tommy Dorsey then, you'll find the sound on this CD just wonderful. Bittersweet memories of friendship, our country united in a struggle against a huge enemy, and finally resisting occupation so that our children could enjoy that awful music called rock & roll in the 50's... Only kidding, some of the rock stuff was endurable, but nothing can beat the beat of a real big band like Tommy Dorsey's!
"Opus one" the best of the best........2002-11-20
I have allways been a fan of Tommy Dorsey, and so will you when you listen to "Opus one", "Song of India" and "Marie" which, I think are some of his best work. Is it worth the price? If you are a fan of Tommy Dorsey and after, listening to the tracks, you will be, along with answering many times over, YES!

Customer Reviews:
Great to Hear All those great Voices from the Past.......2007-07-05
I just wanted to confirm what the first reviewer had to say about this CD. To hear Ethyl Merman, Mary Martin, Andrea McCardle etc. singing their trademark songs brought a lot of memories from the mid-centry musical theater back again. The last song by Glynis Johns is especially poignant.
You certainly can't beat the price!
A Good One!.......2006-11-10
This is a very good CD, mostly because it's the original artists. I've had some that were re-recorded by no name artists that were ghastly. This one is a really good one--including the sound quality. If I had one wish, I would wish it were longer!

Worth the price for sure!.......2007-03-16
I used this to provide background music for a special "Great Depression" exhibit my history students put together for the rest of the school. GREAT selection for representing the 1930s, except for a real important omission: "Brother, Can You Spare A Dime" is not on this CD and it should be. Other than that, the tunes are right on target and Kate Smith's rendition of "God Bless American" is wonderful.

If you are interested in 20th century popular music this can help cut down on large volume purchases. It is a good sampling.
Nipper's Greatest Hits The 30's Volume 1.......2007-01-03
A nice collection of 20 period songs that include some familiar selections such as Happy Days are Here Again, Stardust, We're In The Money, Moonlight Serenade and Kate Smith with Orchestra singing God Bless America along with 15 others. These are old recordings and a few do not have great sound quality as versions done later, but, are authentic. Amazon.com's music samples were very helpful.

Sweet but incomplete.......2007-07-11
Sweet was one of the most successful UK bands of the 1970s. Their first hit was 1971's Funny Funny, a singalong bubblegum ditty. That same year they had another huge success with the clever pop number Coco, a song about a gibbon with sweet hooks and gorgeous harmonies. As the 1970s progressed, their sound evolved into a type of bubblegum metal, power pop or glamrock.
They always had the best hooks, their harmonies were tops and the expert production assured them regular top 10 status for a good many years. Songs like Blockbuster, Hell Raiser, Ballroom Blitz, Fox On The Run and Teenage Rampage are rowdy and tuneful little teen anthems which still sound fresh today.
Not everything here is great, since Poppa Joe, Alexander Graham Bell, Little Willy and Wig Wam Bam are disposable and lightweight pop. The worst omissions (not sure if they were all released as singles) are Restless, Set Me Free, Sweet FA, Mother Earth and their huge 1978 hit Love Is Like Oxygen.
The superior Sweet collection from the glam era and late 1970s when their sound gained a harder edge, is titled The Best of Sweet whilst the album of choice for the early pop period plus some memorable album tracks is Very Best of Sweet. Although it isn't comprehensive, this Greatest Hits album does contain most of their most successful songs.
Ho Chi Minh is wrong!.......2006-05-01
This revier claims that the sweet ripped of David Bowies Gene Jeanie. Sorry, but the so called "Bowie riff" was not origanal when bowie did it, countless blues ands rock acts of the 50's and '60s already used that riff long before Bowie or the Sweet ever did (for example, Honeybus use that very same riff in the mid-1960s). Anyone who points there finger at the sweet for "ripping off Bowie" knows nothing about the many songs that already used the riff and therefore Bowie was ripping off the song where he had heard it. Anyway, the sweet did a much better job of using it than Bowie did.
sweet things come in packages .......2005-12-31
the glam rock band that came after marc bolan and t.rex exploded with their glitter boogie..the sweet follow in the same vein as marc having soaring solo's and clean vocals..this band rocks and it features the hillarous single "little willy" and the smash
"ballroom blitz" and "teenage rampage" it features my favorite song "wait until the morning comes" these guys surely knew how to write catchy melodies rock on..
The Best Sweet Compilation Available.......2004-08-20
"Greatest Hits" is the best Sweet compilation available. All the Sweet's best songs are here; remastered for great sound. This disc boasts 4 more tracks and overall better sound quality than it's American competition, Capitol's "Best Of Sweet". Often "best of" albums don't give a true picture of many bands. Often the songs need to be heard in the context of the album they were recorded (a song out of The Who's "Tommy" or Floyd's "Dark Side Of The Moon" for example). The Sweet, however, were always a singles band. So the presentation here really gives the listener an idea of how great this band really was. For any "hard rock", "metal", "glam" or old time "rock 'n' roll" fan, this album is a must.
Sweet`s bestselling tracks -71-78.......2003-03-02
Been listening to the Sweet`s almost whole production this CD
gives me just a piece of it all. Anyway this is a great cross-
section of their long and shading rock`n`roll era and in a commercial way it`s fabulous. There`re so many other songs in their production among the other things; magical Healer, Own Up,
take a look at Yourself, Windy City, She gimme lovin`..., not forgetting their earlier prod. Jeanie, Spotlight,Beatles`s Paper
back Writer...etc. Brian Connolly`s voice was one of the best
of all the rock/pop/heavy metal singers at last century.

The ROAR of the roaring twenties !!!.......2007-05-06
Nipper's Greatest Hits-The 20's contains 20 great numbers on a single CD that really lead you back into the 1920s in America when people were uninhibited and relentlessly optimistic about life. The CD offers tracks by a lot of different musicians and some of them remain famous today: you get Maurice Chevalier singing "Louise;" Fanny Brice performing "My Man" and Duke Ellington and his Orchestra performing "Black And Tan Fantasy." Great!
The CD track set begins with the playful tune entitled "Let's Misbehave." Phil Saxe & Chorus do a great job with the vocals for "Let's Misbehave;" this number throws you right into the carefree mood of the roaring 20's in America. Gene Austin then performs "My Blue Heaven" with a slow tempo that works really well. The musical arrangement makes good use of the piano and strings, too.
Other gems on this CD include a song about the hero of the 1920s, Charles Lindbergh, entitled "Lucky Lindy." "Lucky Lindy" is performed to perfection by Nat Shilkret and the Victor Orchestra & Chorus. "The Variety Drag" will entertain you even today with its catchy and infectious upbeat melody; and Helen Kane sings her classic number "I Wanna Be Loved By You." Eddie Cantor also performs one of his signature numbers, "Makin' Whoopee." Wow!
Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra perform The Charleston; and Johnny Hemp's Kentucky Serenaders do a great job with "If I Had A Talking Picture Of You."
The CD ends with an electronic recording of Gershwin's "Rhapsody In Blue" performed by George Gershwin on piano with Paul Whiteman and his Concert Orchestra. This classic piece of music ends the album with a strong flourish.
The liner notes give you all the song credits and even a brief explanation of how well the songs sold and the popularity of the entertainers on this disc. The artwork is excellent, too.
Unfortunately, there is plenty of surface noise on this disc and you can easily hear a lot of scratches; it sounds as if they simply recorded these tracks straight from old 78s. RCA and BMG state that these tracks were digitally remastered; but whoever did the remastering didn't do a good job. I have to take off one star for this to make this a four star review.
The "roaring 20's" remain a special time in American history. Rarely has the entire country been in such a good mood. The economy was booming, to say the least; and people looked forward to an even brighter future, unaware of the serious economic depression that was actually just around the corner. This CD lets us vicariously experience the good times of the 1920s in America; and music aficionados of jazz from this era will delight in this CD. I also recommend this CD for fans of classic jazz vocals.
Nipper sure gave us some great music in the 1920s! Great job, everyone!!!
The best of the Roaring Twenties.......2007-03-03
NIPPER'S GREATEST HITS * THE 20s is perhaps the finest collection of Roaring Twenties music available. All but five of these selections are electrically recorded and many feature the superstars of that day.
HIGHLIGHTS:
GEORGE GERSHWIN and PAUL WHITEMAN recreate their Aeolian Hall performance of "Rhapsody In Blue." Liner notes mislabel this as a 1927 performance, but it's actually an acoustic horn waxing, from three years earlier. No one ever interpreted this piece better than it's virtuoistic pianist-composer.
VERNON DALHART made musical history with the first ever C&W million seller, "The Prisoner's Song."
FRED WARING, the PENNSYLVANIANS, raccoon coats, beanies and banners. This is the most famous version of "Collegiate." RAH!
EDDIE CANTOR singing the title number from his Broadway smash, "Whoopie." This stage show was filmed IN COLOR in it's entirety, in 1929.
The Boop-boop-a-doop Girl, HELEN KANE with one of her most famous records, "I Wanna Be Loved By You." Max Fleisher's Betty Boop was based on Kane, who supposedly "borrowed" her booping style from another singer.
FANNY BRICE performs her theme song, the torchy "My Man."
IRVING AARONSON's "Let's Misbehave" was used to both open and close Woody Allen's 1972 film, EVERYTHING YOU'VE ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT SEX.
Heartthrob Frenchman, MAURICE CHEVALIER croons "Louise," his first big American hit.
"Black And Tan Fantasy," a DUKE ELLINGTON original, was recorded by his band in the late '20s with the VICTOR, OKEH and BRUNSWICK labels. This RCA version is said by many to be the definitive take of this classic.
Additionally, popular dances of the day like the Lindy Hop, Varsity Drag, Black Bottom and the ubiquitous Charleston are here. Audio quality varies, but is never poor-- no obtrusive filtering used. Includes eight pages of detailed notes. For all who love 1920s music, you can't go wrong with NIPPER'S GREATEST HITS. Highest recommendation.

Bang for your Buck.......2007-01-03
The best sampling of 20's stuff I've found. As always Nippers came through.
If it's your first purchase, maybe.......2006-05-13
As another reviewer says, there are more and more collections of this music available. That being so, this one loses much of its luster. In the 20s there were as many different genres of music as there are today, and this RCA package focuses on songs from their vault, with no other connection or continuity. Thus you get the soggy country of Vernon Dahlhart, the music hall of Fanny Brice and Gertrude Lawrence, a true pop classic by Helen Kane, some sterling 20s jazz, Maurice Chevalier, and then Geroge Gershwin. But some thematic structure would be nice; this feels like rolling down the car radio dial. And just as there are always stations that you skip past as soon as you hear their flavor, there will probably be selections here you'd rather not listen to.
As an introduction to the music, this is fine. Not great, but fine. You can hear what a long-lost world was listening to (in good reproductions.) But if you already know something about this era, with a few CDs on the shelf, try elsewhere. Hunt down the more consistent collections, of which there are many.

"In A Sentimental Mood".......2005-12-29
"If an individual allows his personal standard to be eroded, something of what he does is going to be compromised. It's a matter of detail, sometimes when you start losing detail, whether it's in music or in life, something as small as not sending a thank-you note, of failing to be polite to someone, you start to lose substance." ~ Benny Goodman (1909-1986) ~
The above quote was part of Benny Goodman's responses to Glenn Miller's questions to him before he had his own band: "How do you do it? How do you get started?" His initial advice was "I don't know but whatever you do, don't stop. Just keep on going. Because one way or the other, if you want to find reasons why you shouldn't keep on, you'll find them. The obstacles are all there; there are a million of them. But if you want to do something, you do it anyway, and handle the obstacles as they come. Even to this day, I don't like people walking on stage not looking good. You have to look good. If you feel special about yourself then you're going to play special." That was a totally brilliant advice from a talented jazz artist to another one-in-the-making back then. Definitely Glenn Miller paid attention to his advice and became one of the most successful recording artists in his time.
A very fine clarinetist, a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Awardee and the King of Swing, Benny Goodman was one the greatest jazz artists along with Glenn Miller in the Big Band Era.
This CD features a collection of fifteen Benny Goodman's greatest hits recorded between 1935 and 1937. My personal choices from this compilation include Irving Berlin's "Always," Kurtz/Mills/Ellington's "In A Sentimental Mood" and Gordon Jenkin's "Goodbye." These tunes were recorded by Benny Goodman and his Orchestra.
"Body and Soul" and "After You've Gone" are two tracks from The Benny Goodman Trio (Benny Goodman on clarinet, Teddy Wilson on piano and Gene Krupa on drums). It was Gene Krupa who bestowed upon him the title of undisputed "King of Swing."
Two of the best tracks are "Tea For Two" and "Moonglow," which were recorded by The Benny Goodman Quartet (the Trio plus Lionel Hampton on vibes).
I highly recommend this wonderful CD to add to your collection of timeless Big Band music. Great music to listen to if you're in a sentimental mood!
Satisfaction with this one depends on your budget..........2003-05-13
If you like your jazz/swing to be pre-World War II, this disc's for you. Here are 15 cuts with Benny and orchestra, featuring pianist Teddy Wilson, drummer Gene Krupa and Lionel Hampton on vibes. You get 53 minutes of tracks laid down in the 1930's, including some famous songs and performances. With all that said, however, this RCA release may not be the best value available in Goodman CD's. The liner notes are brief, there is little data on the songs or the settings. Two of the four booklet pages are wasted touting other releases in this particular RCA "Greatest Hits" series. My copy says the disc was issued in 1996. But nowhere does it say "remastered." While the songs are not really scratchy, one can tell the original sources here were not in perfect shape or cleaned up digitally. I found my copy at a bargain price, so I am satisfied. The music, after all, is vintage Benny Goodman, and the sound quality is acceptable. If you want the single best CD of his hits that's in print, however, you might look at the other items in the Amazon listing. Read some reviews, compare prices---you might be happier with a different choice.
Poor presentation.......2000-07-06
When rating a greatest hits complilation of one of the greatest bands in the 20th century the most important criteria are the packaging and remastering. On both counts this CD fails miserably. Scratchy sounding recordings that appear to have been dubbed by amateurs. Liner notes, recording information etc. are uninformative. Better presentations of Goodman's music exist. It's a shame that RCA/BMG take so little interest in their treasure trove of classic recordings.

Customer Reviews:
Nipper turns his attention to the best of music in the 40's.......2001-12-23
Having been impressed with what Nipper turned up from the 30's, I was slightly disappointed to find the pickings are not as good in Volume I of the Greatest Hits from the 40's. Yes, there is "Star Dust," Lena Horne singing "Stormy Weather," Glenn Miller's Orchestra doing "Chattanooga Choo Choo" and Spike Lee's immortal take on "Cocktails for Two," but this is the first Nipper collection where I did not recognize at least half the tracks. True, these songs were all done long before I was born, but I did a lot better than this with the two volumes covering the 30's. Young Frank Sinatra is here crooning his way "There Are Such Things" with Tommy Dorsey and "Night and Day" in an early solo effort and I do recognize most of the artists if not most of the songs. Still, Nipper's Greatest Hits is the best collection of eclectic oldies this side of Time-Life. My rule of thumb is always pick up any greatest hits album that adds five new songs to your music collection, and Nipper never disappoints by that standard.
Solid, Man, Solid.......2001-01-09
Another solid entry in the NGH series, with much cooler songs than Volume 2 of the 40s. This is a good mixture of standards (Glenn Miller's Chatanooga Choo Choo, Artie Shaw's Frenesi, Dinah Shore's version of Blues in the Night), classic novelty songs (The Hut-Sut Song and Spike Jones' Cocktails for Two), and one classic rarity that wasn't really a "hit" (Glenn Miller's Armed Forces band remake of Pistol Packin' Mama with lyrics about an eponymous bomber that need to be heard). Most of this is entertainment not art, but it is good entertainment of its time.
