The Rod Stewart Album [Original recording remastered]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Freshly split from the hard-edged Jeff Beck Group and about to join the anarchic Faces, Rod Stewart rocked out on his solo debut, but did so largely with the backing of acoustic instruments, reinventing songs like the Rolling Stones' "Street Fighting Man" and Ewan MacColl's "Dirty Old Town" with an appealing mix of rootsy, bluesy slide guitars and his own gravelly vocals. Backed with French horn and flutes, Mike D'Abo's "Handbags and Gladrags" has a gorgeous chamber-pop feel, and Stewart contributes five original tunes, including "Man of Constant Sorrow" and "An Old Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down" (the title track of the album's original English edition). Clocking in at only 33 minutes, The Rod Stewart Album is brief, but it's a brilliant kick-off to the singer's long and storied solo career. --Daniel Durchholz

Rod Stewart's career has been subject to so many twists that a single-disc overview is somehow both appealingly broad and inadequate to the task of tracing all those zigzags. From beloved rocker of the first order to disco dilettante to pop crooner, Stewart's career has presented challenges to fans who may have been charmed by the rollickingly randy "Maggie May" and bemused by the alarmingly narcissistic "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" This 16-song retrospective touches all the bases without delving deeply into any era. The selections aren't arranged sequentially and the booklet is much more generous with vintage photos than album credits. This best-of collection is clearly aimed at the casual fan, but no album that presents Rod the Mod gems "Downtown Train," "You Wear It Well," and "Reason to Believe" one after another is a throwaway. --Steven Stolder

The Very Best of Rod Stewart.......2007-05-14
If you want the best that he has done, this is it. It has all of my favorites, especially "Rhythm of My Heart". If you prefer to have collections of a performer's best, this is it for Rod Stewart.

Rod Stewart has stood the test of time and this CD is a compilation of most of his greatest hits. His music ranges from ballads to foot stomping rock, and it's all good!

Amazon.com essential recording
Once upon a time, Rod Stewart was not vamping indiscriminately about "Hot Legs" and asking "D'ya Think I'm Sexy?" He was a singer with a gravel-voice approximation of Sam Cooke and excellent taste in cover material. Here, he's toned down with folksy covers of Tim Hardin ("Reason to Believe"), Bob Dylan ("Tomorrow is Such a Long Time"), and Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup (via Elvis, "That's All Right Mama"). He tops his interpretive abilities with two originals that have since become standards ("Maggie May, " "Every Picture Tells A Story"). Quite a different Rod from the one the world has come to know. --Rob O'Connor
Customer Reviews:
Indeed, It Does.......2007-05-25
Gene Santoro wrote that Rod's lyrics were "almost offhand, conversational, the kind of rambling talk you might overhear at the table in a bar." That was this album - a good friend, talking to you over (maybe slightly too many) drinks. Folkie melancholy, rockin' and rollin' - with this album you were hanging with a bud. Rod was alternative when this was released - he had instruments that no one else was using, the songs were different, the mood was congenial. Why Rod can't do something like this again, from a different perspective, is still something I can't figure out.
Every Story Tells a Picture - So Do I.......2007-05-18
Folks. Your favorite Seer (me), despite my grandiose aspirations for Nirvanic pefection, can get himself in really dumb situations. Chance, my sometimes morose guide (who teaches movie stars how to scowl) came by and suggested that I needed a change. So he had a stylist come in to war against my long grey hair. People. I could cry. I wound up with a rooster cut and, not only that, but now it's blond! How can I go to a Seer's convention looking like this? And I can't tame this hair. I bought exotic spray (with ingredients from the figi islands), minty fresh laquer, and jell made from grapes- and nothing - absolutely nothing affects this hair at all! I must have combed it in a thousand ways-but it came out lookig just the same. However, I am a Rod Stewart look alike now without that incredible voice. You should hear me sing - sounds like sqeeks. I do a mean mousetone folks!
Anyway, Rod, on this album, secures and deserves his legacy no matter what age has done to him. In this he is the ultimate rocker, the soulful crooner, the balladeer all rolled into one. And, let's not forget those vocals. Gritty and wonderful and one of a kind.
The thing that strikes me most about this album is the wise choice of songs and the ability to really create "live" sound. It sounds like they are playing in your living room and this makes the music sound alive and real.
We begin with "Every Picture Tells a Story" which is Rod at his finest, rockin' rave best. Even the break in this song is picture perfect. Then on to that slow soulful piano ballad "Seems Like a Long Time" with the essential female backing vocals. Listen to how the chorus gets insistent near the end and then goes back down to the beginning sparse arrangement. So superb.
Wonderful slide guitar and the band in fine, soulful swing with "That's All Right". All the instruments groove on this one. Then the acoustic, beautiful "Tomorrow is a Long Time" with tasty guitar and fiddle and aching vocals by Rod. I should point out that he secured some extremely talented musicians for this project. The unity of playing is prominent with the joy of hearing all contributions so crisp and clear.
The acoustic beginning of "Maggie May" reminds me of when I went back in time to King Arthur's court. It was during a big feast. I remember getting sick on the wine. Anyway, the song is about the love of a young man and an older woman. I'm sure you have all heard this classic by now. But, as an aside, your Metamorpho has personally tried to make a living out of playing pool and it was not pretty. They almost broke my thumbs.
Then we have "Mandolin Wind" with beautiful mandolins and slide guitar. Again, how sweet this song begins and then moves towards a crest. Rod knows what he's doing. He offers the gritty syrup and then belts us with sheer gravel. What a mason he is.
"(I Know) I'm Losing You" is a great version of that soulful tune. Aside from the great beat, Rod treats us to a meaningful, expert vocal, brimming with emotion and desperation. His interpretation of this song is right on target.
He ends the album with Tim Hardin's "Reason to Believe". Beautiful. You can hear the ache of a man who has lost faith but still wants to find a shred of that faith in order to have some meaning in life. Absolutely so well done.
In closing, the peaks and valleys of this album resonate long after you hear it. It is so well thought out and the order is an inspiration. This is classic Rod Stewart. His career may have had peaks and valleys as well. But this one stands on the highest peak. A classic - and so good to hear instruments that have a real sound.
That's all for now people. Now, don't feel too badly for me. Warmer weather is coming so I'm going to buzz cut my hair and then put on my seer's hat. If that doesn't work I can get my orange clown wig out of storage. The future, after all, belongs to the clever.
Yours, from the French Bank ------Metamorpho
Every Picture Tells A Story, Don't It?.......2007-04-18
This album is what church aspires to be but can never be. Even more soulful, by a hair, than the "Truth" album by the Jeff Beck Group. In fact, just listen to these two back-to-back. If "Blues Deluxe" (from Truth) doesn't rip your blues-lovin' soul out, you ain't alive. And if "Ever Picture..." doesn't break your heart like it needs to be broke, just go out and pick yourself up some Justin Timberlake, bro, 'cause it's over.
to my grandchildren........2007-04-09
yes children, there was once a time when rod stewart made good albums. even a great one. this is the great one. great rock and roll numbers. beautiful ballads. music with soul. listen to "mandolin wind," for instance. that's great stuff. so is the title track and "tomorrow is a long time." and hear what he does with the tim hardin classic, "reason to believe." that's certainly great. "maggie may," you may even have heard this on the oldies station. fine tune, isn't it? lots of excellent guitar on this album, as well. ron wood, who would soon become a rolling stone, plays here; and the boy sure has a feel for rock and roll. somebody needs to get ahold of mr stewart and make him listen to this album. couldn't he do something like this again? just for his old fans. maybe rick rubin could slap him upside the head and talk some sense into the old geezer. anyway, children, this is how it was, back even before the days of disco. those were good times. oh, nostalgia.
Don't it, don't it.......2007-03-30
Great covers of Bob Dylan and Tim Hardin mixed w/ Rod Stewart originals and whiz bang, you have a seminal early 70's rock classic. The musicianship's great- thumping bass, clean guitar and a bit of cheesy keyboards fronting a great gravel-voiced Stewart and on occasion, wailing backups by the estimable Maggie Bell.
This is is the one Rod Stewart disc you must have---what a shame that he turned into a clown.

It's been said that no one sold out his talent like Rod Stewart, who began his career singing Sam Cooke numbers in a way that would have impressed Sam Cooke's mother. But Stewart has always been a pop animal no matter how soulful his chops and he's often at his best when primping in front of the microphone trying to make himself sound pretty. "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy" may seem ridiculous, but it's five-plus minutes of melodramatic tension, caught between self-love and self-parody. "I Was Only Joking" is Rod's warning to the world that "Hot Legs" and its ilk will soon be his modus operandi. "I Don't Want to Talk About It" and "You're in My Heart" are as sincere as he gets. --Rob O'Connor

ONE OF ROD THE MOD'S GREATEST COMPILATION ALBUMS EVER........2007-05-07
Before I begin my review, I would like to wish a very Happy 10th Birthday to my nephew in Yuba City, California whose name is Alan John Schmidt. I love you and miss you lots AJ, I'll be seeing you soon. Love always, Your Uncle John and Grandpa Johnny Sr.
I will be writing a review on the legendary compilation album entitled "ROD STEWART GREATEST HITS" by one of Rock's all-time greatest artists ever. I give you one of Scotland's and England's pride and joy's and one of Britain's favorite sons, M-R. R-O-D S-T-E-W-A-R-T! "ROD STEWART GREATEST HITS" was originally released in 1979 on Vinyl/LP and Cassette on the Warner Brothers Records Inc. label which is a Warner Communications Company. This legendary compilation album would be released on Compact Disc in the mid to late 80's. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the overall best informative and most accurate review possible.
ROD STEWART will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for NOT SELLING OUT, but for recording some of Rock's most sacred classic anthems ever. ROD STEWART will also be remembered for having and containing the ultimate Rock n' Roller's voice. And just think, when ROD the mod started out, he was so nervous that he would sing on stage with his back facing the crowd. ROD the mod would be the lead singer in two of Rock's greatest bands ever before moving on into an extremely successful solo career, THE JEFF BECK GROUP and THE FACES. Through the years, ROD STEWART would record many great solo albums and numerous hit songs to highly critically acclaim. Which brings me to the legendary compilation album I'm about to review for you today. "ROD STEWART GREATEST HITS" would be the result of his many greatest hits in the 1970's. The "GREATEST HITS" album would also serve and symbolize the recognition of the many great contributions, accomplishments and achievements in STEWART'S career. In my opinion, "ROD STEWART GREATEST HITS" is without a doubt, a true testament of the sheer genius and musical creativity of a very extremely talented individual. "ROD STEWART GREATEST HITS" is also a fine fitting tribute to a great artist this is truly indeed, far ahead of his time.
It is now time to let the Rock n' Roll music of ROD STEWART to speak for itself and back it up by doing all of the talking musically. "ROD STEWART GREATEST HITS" begins with the blistering hard Rock anthem dedicated to the many beautiful women the world over with beautiful legs, "Hot Legs," the forever ROD STEWART trademark acoustic and mandolin filled Rock anthem "Maggie May," the forever Disco hard Rock anthem "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?," the beautifully slow and smooth acoustic Rock anthem "You're In My Heart (The Final Acclaim)," the beautifully slow and soothing mild Rock anthem "Sailing," the beautifully slow acoustic Rock anthem "I Don't Want To Talk About It," the forever ROD STEWART trademark acoustic Rock anthem dedicated to all of the beautiful virgin women the world over, "Tonight's The Night," the beautifully slow acoustic Rock anthem "The Killing Of Georgie (Part I and II)," the beautifully slow and legendary acoustic Rock anthem that pretty much says it all, "The First Cut Is The Deepest" and the beautifully slow acoustic Rocker "I Was Only Joking." May I also add that ROD the mod's blistering Rockin' lead vocals were sizzlin' and burning red hot while laying down the tracks for all of these legendary Rock anthems. THE ULTIMATE ROCK VOICE INDEED.
Overall, this is is one hell of a greatest hits compilation album worth checking out and seeking further research and information into especially if you are a hardcore diehard ROD STEWART fan or a devout music collector. As for all of the curious newcomers and new beginners that are not quite familiar with the sound and music of ROD STEWART, this greatest hits compilation album is not a bad place to start. However, there are many other ROD STEWART greatest hits compilation albums that you might want to research further into before you make your final decision as to which album(s) is right for your musical needs and tastes. Either way you choose, you will have taken a giant step in owning and starting your very own personal ROD STEWART music collection. You can do all of your researching and album purchases either on Amazon com or at your nearest local Borders Books and Music store. If you ever get a chance, buy this album. You'll be happy and satisfied that you did.
I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary compilation album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary treasure album has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This is one great legendary compilation album that no hardcore music fan or devout music collector would want to be without.
In closing, ROD STEWART has successfully continued in recording more great albums and embarking on new World Tours to sell-out audiences the world over to promote them to highly critically acclaim up to this very day. Knowing this, I guess it is safe to say that ROD STEWART isn't going anywhere anytime soon. There will also be new stories in the ROD STEWART legend that will still need to be told and written. But that, my fellow readers and reviewers, you will just have to stay tuned to your computers and read further more about it at a later date in the near future. With this in mind, ROD STEWART has forever left his place and mark in Rock n' Roll history and will never be forgotten. So here's to you Rod. Thanks for the many great memories with many more still to come. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have truly enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. ROD STEWART RULES! Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.
Okay, WHY did they emphasize Rod's "Self-Parody" Period?.......2006-12-19
The only reasonable song here is Maggie May. Rod made some good stuff back in The Day, but you wouldn't hear much of it here. Where's... oh, I don't know... Gasoline Alley? Hm... what about Handbags and Gladrags? You Wear it Well? Every Picture Tells a Story? Mandolin Wind? Twistin' the Night Away? I'm Losing You? True Blue? That's All Right? It's All Over Now? And why, in their place, are Rod's self-parody hits such as Do Ya Think I'm Sexy? (I puke when I hear that song), You're In My Heart, The First Cut is the Deepest, and Tonight's the Night? SENSE IS NOT BEING MADE HERE, PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!
just love that rod.......2006-03-27
this is a great album. i actually wore out my first copy of this cd and had to buy a new one.
Looking for a couple of favorites? This might be the CD for you!.......2006-03-11
I suppose if you are on a budget and are only looking for one or two songs you might be able to justify spending a dollar and the cost of shipping to purchase this CD. Fans of Rod's early material might want to seek out the Mercury Anthology.
Rod the mod........2006-01-22
At this point, there are numerous collections out of Rod Stewart. This original "Greatest Hits" has alot of the good stuff, but since it was a vinyl era release, we only get 10 tracks. Even twice the number of songs would still be the basics. This disc also needs remastering desperately. It plays much quieter than most of my other CDs. I wont even begin to mention what's missing here, I'll just say that the most casual fan would still enjoy this. Anyone else should look into "The Very Best Of", or even the "Downtown Train" collection.

Customer Reviews:
Amazingly Wonderful.......2007-03-03
This 4 CD box set of Rod Stewart is extremely great, from start to finish, it's got a vast assortment of songs that Rod recorded between 1964-1990, all of which are great, you get a little of everything from Rod, during this time period. You get all the hits, plus some great rarities! If you love Rod, you'll love this, indeed! Also, I am pleased with the booklet that comes with it, lots of nice pictures and nice to hear Rod's comments on the songs.
Well chosen songs; poorly packaged.......2006-10-15
Box sets always bring up arguments as to what's missing but there is very little missing from this set. Having every one of Rod''s CDs, the only three missing tracks that I would have put on here are "I Feel The Whole World Go Round" from the 60s band Shotgun Express, "Farewell" from Smiler and "The Wild Horse" from Out of Order. (OK and maybe two or three others!) but overall, the selection was excellent. It puts Rod Stewar in context, and much of the 80s stuff holds up every well to the sacred early 70s stuff. (Rod was always a great singles artist, though some of his albums are really terrible.)
The box set was thrown together very quickly though, and the packaging is weak. The book is thin and flimsy and features just one essay by writer Robert Palmer, who does a good job of praising without going overboard. But Warners always treated Rod Stewart like [...] and this box set deserved a better package.
Rod "The Bod" Stewart boxed.......2006-01-11
He's done it all in his career: Classic rock, pop and now he relives the past in his The Great American Songbook series. This box set is of course is all about Rod at his very best. Not really a bad song in the four disc set which shows his transition from classic rock ("Street Fighting Man", Maggie May", etc) into the pop world ("Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?", "Downtown Train, etc). He has been one of only a few artists that could transition to different genres and still be successful. Very successful. I give the set a 4.5 based on sound quality (not remastered) otherwise, it's a 5.
Representative, but not the best material.......2005-11-12
Storyteller does not contain all of Stewart's best material. In fact, if you want all of Stewart's best songs, then just get his first 4 solo CDs, 4 CDs with The Faces, his CD with Jeff Beck (Truth) and skip Storyteller. I think these 9 CDs - released over just a 4-year period! - rival anything the Stones or Zeppelin ever did.
But if you want to hear a representative overview of his career - the good, the bad, and the ugly - then Storyteller is a good buy. Clearly, Stewart is an excellent singer and very talented, and some of his recent CDs (Vagabond Heart) are respectable, but today is generally hack.
Excellent Anniversary Of Rod's First 25 Years.......2005-09-06
Rod Stewart is one of the most successful artists in rock history. He is also one of its most diverse. Over the years, Rod has experimented with everything from folk to hard rock to disco to even modern R&B/hip-hop. In 1990, the four disc boxed set "Storyteller" was released to commemorate his first 25 years as a musician. Well, as we know, Rod has released quite a bit of work since then, most of it worth owning. So, how does "Storyteller" hold for a 15 year old compilation? Here are the positives and negatives.
Positives:
-If you want all the best from Rod's first 25 years, than this collection covers the entire spectrum. All of the hits from that period, inlcuding "Maggie May", "Tonight's The Night", "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy", "Young Turks", "Some Guys Have All The Luck" and "Forever Young", to name a few, are all on here.
-As with all boxed sets, there's a wealth of underrated gems and rarities on here. The entire first disc is filled with nothing but them!
-All the songs sound great.
-The liner notes, with an introduction by Robert Palmer and commentaries on each song by Rod himself, plus some nice photos, is excellent.
-Is fairly easy to locate.
-There's a great (then) new version of "I Don't Wanna Talk About It" only available here.
-It's available for about $ 50.00. That may seem expensive, but considering most boxed set can exceed $ 80.00, you get a pretty darn good deal.
Negatives:
-It doesn't contain all the wonderful stuff he did after 1990. So you won't find hit singles like "Rhythm Of My Heart", "The Motown Song" and "Have I Told You Lately" as well as other great stuff on here. However, since this collection was released before all that, it can't really be considered a negative as it was out of the compilers' jurisdiction.
-"I Was Only Joking" is edited. You should never put edited versions on a boxed set.
Overall, I'd definitely recommend this boxed set. It is an excellent representation of Rod's best years. For the other excellent pso - 1990 material, download them.

The fourth Rod Stewart album to contain his trademark acoustic-electric mix of instruments and bluesy vocals, Never a Dull Moment feels anything but formulaic, kicking off with the aw-shucks modesty of "True Blue" and rollicking on through the enduring original "You Wear It Well." Some of the best tunes here are covers--Bob Dylan's searching "Mama You Been on My Mind," a soulful reading of Sam Cooke's "Twistin' the Night Away," and a scorching take on Etta James's "I'd Rather Go Blind"--but, as always, Stewart manages to make them sound of a piece with his own compositions. Unlike the promises proffered by some album titles, Never a Dull Moment (ironic though it was, given the cover painting of a terminally bored Stewart) proved to be dead-on. --Daniel Durchholz

BPs Review.......2007-01-09
This remains my favorite Rod Stewart music. Reminds me of when I listened to it on my way to SAT classes back in high school on my 8 track! So happy to have finally found it on Amazon, cos I've been looking for years....
Me and Janet.......and Rod........2006-07-21
This album was the soundtrack to a (for me, at least) painful breakup with Janet, who seriously broke my heart at the tender age of 19. Every track brings back memories, and I consider it to be one of the best albums of all time, with "Every picture tells a story" bringing up a close second. It was simply Rod and his mates at their best, playing good rock an'roll as it should be played, with a bit of a sense of humour, and it was all downhill when they broke up. I actually got to see them live, (in '72, i think) and I wish I still had the haircut! it would be good if some of todays bands could sound as good live.
make a solo album,call your mates.......2006-04-16
How do you make a solo album? Call your band mates. How do you follow up a serious classic album? Make a fun classic album! Step 1: call the Faces, Step 2: Add some awesome studio musicians, Step 3: Rock'n'Roll. One of the most underrated, unabated albums ever recorded, it never disappoints from song 1 to song end. True Blue kicks off the album in a raw and rythmic jam followed by one of the greatest exiles of FM radio the loose rockin' "Lost Paraguayos" where all guitars, vocals, horns, bass & sloppy drums SHINE! Next The Faces make Dylan their own with "Mama You Been on My Mind" and then roar through the infectious riff rock of Italian Girls". A simplified soulful garage rock version of Hendrix's "Angel" keeps the good times rolling. The classic " You Wear it Well" starts the second half of the album which concludes with 2 smokin' remakes: Etta James would be proud of the boy's take on her classic "I'd Rather Go Blind" and next is a get up and party version of Sam Cooke's "Twistin' the Night Away". WARNING this album makes you want to play it over and over again!!!
The Best Rock Singer Ever.......2006-02-27
Back in the day, Rod Stewart was, quite simply, the best rock singer in the world. If that sounds like a grand claim, pick up this CD and listen. Case closed. A lot of younger people listening to Rod's most recent output must wonder why he was once so revered. I'd say the first 20 seconds of this album would be a pretty good clue. As Rod rips into "True Blue", it's the start of a powerhouse album of great rock singing. Essential from start to finish. "You Wear It Well" may have been the (deservedly) big hit here, but the rest of the material is outstanding.
Of course, nobody would have noticed if the material and the support from the band weren't consistently excellent. They are. This album is astonishingly good from start to finish. The only song that didn't grab me from the start was the cover of Sam Cooke's "Twistin' the Night Away", played quite slower than the original. Now I realize it was just that this song about twisting was reinterpreted as a hard rock song. Not really twistable, but darned good nevertheless.
Arguments about whether this or "Every Picture Tells A Story" are Rod's best album are irrelevant. If you're a serious fan of Rock music and you don't own both, you're doing yourself a diservice.
HE'S JUST THAT GOOD!!!!.......2005-10-29
BUYING THIS CD WAS ACTUALLY A REVISIT FOR ME BUT AFTER LISTENING TO IT I REALIZED HOW FORTUNATE I AM TO BE ON THE SAME PLANET WITH THIS ICON!

Working in what was not then called an "unplugged" format, Stewart mixed acoustic guitars, mandolin, and piano with a hard-rock attitude to create a distinctive sound that seems as fresh today as ever. Building on the success and innovations of The Rod Stewart Album, Gasoline Alley contains unfettered, laddish takes on Bobby Womack's "It's All Over Now" and the bluesy "Cut Across Shorty," plus a definitive version of Bob Dylan's "Only a Hobo" and the brilliant, nostalgic title track, a Stewart original. The singer is very near the top of his game here. --Daniel Durchholz
Customer Reviews:
Then was then, now is now.......2007-03-29
Hard to believe the same clown still plonk singing today was so poignant 30+ years ago. While not his best early effort (see Rod Stewart Album and every Picture Tells A Story--each a 5-star effort), this is a worthy addition to the early Rod Stewart Holy Trinity.
Rod's Best Work.......2006-08-10
Rod Stewart's musical career has been evaluated at both ends of the spectrum. One aspect of his talent that has been overlooked has been his ability as a writer. His earlier works with the Faces and his early solo efforts feature great rock music with many of the titles written by Stewart or in collaboration with mates like Ronnie Wood and Ronnie Lane.
Gasoline Alley is a perfect example with a title cut that sets the tone for some of his best work.
Stewart has also consistently maintained the knack for taking songs written by others and adapting them to his style. It's All Over Now, written by Bobby and Shirley Jean Womack is a classic Rod Stewart song. Even Country Comfort, written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin, benefits in the direction Stewart takes it.
Gasoline Alley re-emerged after Stewart's Unplugged And Seated CD included a couple tunes from the album. It's worthy of acclaim.
good boy gone bad.......2005-01-13
Believe it or not, at one time Rod Stewart was one of us. A quick glance at the songwriting credits for this, Stewart's second 'solo' effort, reveal where Rod's head was at: covers of Bobby & Shirley Womack's 'It's All Over Now' (more famously, and somewhat more enjoyably covered by The Rolling Stones), Bob Dylan's 'Only a Hobo', Elton John and Bernie Taupin's 'Country Comforts', and Steve Marriott & Ronnie Lane's 'My Way of Giving'. I've tried to keep my record collection pure of disco, and with composers such as these I don't believe anyone can accuse me of harboring anything as defiling as 'Hot Legs' or 'Do Ya' Think I'm Sexy?'. Unfortunately for me, each time I hear Rod's voice, a bit of the 'Hot Legs' overplay corrupts my capacity to concentrate on his earlier (and better) sensibilities. Rod's raspy vocal cords made him one of rock's premier vocalists before career decisions became of more immediate concern than the art. His defection to 'the other side' was perhaps the most disconcerting loss of the era.
Nevertheless, from his debut 'Rod Stewart Album' through his epic 'Every Picture Tells a Story' and it's sequel, 'Never a Dull Moment', Stewart left behind a fine legacy. 'Gasoline Alley' is Rod's second 'solo' effort, and while it failed to spawn even one single, it is a consistantly fine production. In fact, since it generated absolutely no Top 40 attention, the songs on this disc have managed to escaped the dred overplay that has afflicted some Stewart numbers, most notably 'Maggie May', and even 'You Wear It Well'.
At first glance the disc appears weighted toward more subdued numbers, such as the lilting 'Only a Hobo' and the gentle strains of 'Country Comforts', and in sheer numbers the disc is fairly reserved, especially toward the end when two Stewart compositions, 'Lady Day' and 'Jo's Lament' emerge. But the three longest songs on the disc are all rockers, and they are wisely distributed on tracks two, six and nine. 'It's All Over Now', 'Cut Across Shorty', and 'You're My Girl' consume nearly eighteen minutes of the disc's 41 minute running time, and 'My Way of Giving' is no slouch either. It predictably possesses an upbeat pop sound (reminiscent of Rod's previous gig with The Small Faces) since it was written by Marriott and bassist Ronnie Lane.
Here and there we are enticed by tell-tale sounds that allude to the emerging Stewart epic, 'Every Picture Tells a Story'. The fine back-home opener, 'Gasoline Alley', possesses a mandolin that harkens to 'Mandolin Wind', and 'Cut Across Shorty' and 'You're My Girl' feature sharp guitar riffs that would fuel similar Stewart classics such as his cover of the Temptation's 'I'm Losing You'.
The only disappointing aspect of this particular disc is that the rework didn't add any bonus tracks or informational material to the package... you get only what you got in 1970 with the original vinyl release. Weren't there any other tracks sitting in the vault from this session that ended up on the editing floor, or interesting anecdotes from the contributing artist's that could spice this up a bit? Many people buying this CD today also purchased the recordings on vinyl and cassette. We deserve a few more crumbs from the table.
Rod Stewart's Second Album Is Great.......2004-12-21
GASOLINE ALLEY is Rod Stewart's second great album in a row. From the opening title track, which pays homage to his roots, to the Small Faces' "My Way Of Giving", to Bobby Womack's "It's All Over Now" and Bob Dylan's "Only A Hobo", this album shows Stewart as a working-class rocker, equally at home with the blues/R&B/soul styles of Memphis, Chicago, Texas, St. Louis, Muscle Shoals, and Detroit, and with American and British Isles folk music. All of his first four albums are worth getting at once, along with THE MERCURY ANTHOLOGY, ATLANTIC CROSSING, A NIGHT ON THE TOWN, FOOTLOOSE & FANCY FREE, TONIGHT I'M YOURS, VAGABOND HEART, UNPLUGGED...AND SEATED, SPANNER IN THE WORKS, and WHEN WE WERE THE NEW BOYS- preferably all at once.

This low-key 1993 live retrospective marked something of a return to form for Rod the Mod, who for many years had more or less abdicated his position as a performer of consequence to pursue a more frivolous pop-star persona. With his former Faces bandmate Ron Wood in tow, Stewart revisits hits like "Hot Legs," "Tonight's the Night," and "Maggie May"--and more adventurous choices like Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready" and Tom Waits's "Tom Traubert's Blues"--with an effortless grace and a renewed expressiveness that makes Unplugged ... And Seated a consistent pleasure. --Scott Schinder
Customer Reviews:
A Complete Surprise.......2007-04-11
I've never been a Rod Stewart fan, having hated his mid-period 'If you think I'm sexy' stuff and then just gave up on him until I heard this. A superb unplugged session from the early 1990's.
Starting with a fiery version of 'Hot Legs', you know immediately this is Rod Stewart going back to his early 70's rock 'n' roll best. Track three is 'Handbags and Gladrags', now very familiar in the UK as the theme to 'The Office' that it came as quite a shock to here somebody sing it. I haven't heard the original version but this must push it close.
Its not a perfect album though. Rod should have left Tom Waits 'Tom Traubert's blues (walting matilda)' well alone. Once you've heard Tom Waits original version nothing else is worth listening to. If you don't know Tom Waits, he has a voice that makes Rod Stewarts sound like an operatic soprano!
Fortunately Rod saves the best until last and 'Mandolin Wind', 'Highgate Shuffle' and 'Stay with Me' are all rock 'n' roll Rod from the early 70's - absolutely superb. Sadly the DVD of this isn't available, but it was filmed, and hopefully it will be released one day.
old & new.......2007-03-08
Like the new Rod Stewart, but love the old Stewart. The more I listen to Unplugged, the more I appreciate his talent and place in R&R pantheon.
Many of the numbers brought me back to the Rod of Faces.......2007-02-27
Every Picture Tells A Story, Gasoline Alley were two tremendous albums, which, contributed greatly to the Soundtrack of my life. High School, with a girl friend who played these two albums over and over again. At first, I wasn't a big fan, but hey, I wanted the girl. After we broke up, I found myself listening to those two albums on my own. Sadly Rod and The Faces split, and disco was right around the corner, Rod succumbed.
From time to time, he had a decent song here and there, Downtown Train, People Get Ready, Forever Young to name the majority.
When I first was exposed to this album, I was taken back in time, Rod's vocals were excellent, the Band, including Ronnie Wood tight, you could tell the audience was enjoying something special. Than, Rod had to make one mistake, mentioned during one of the Face's number that his wife wasn't even born yet. Boy did I feel old.
But if you are interested in hearing what are basically the best of Rod, but sung live, this is the album to get. You won't be disappointed.
Rod Stewart in the Acoustic.......2005-10-18
Sometimes performers get so caught up in the studio that they forget their business is to entertain. Rod Stewart apparently remembers how to entertain well as is proven by this excellent CD recorded back in 1993. Rod Stewart clearly enjoys himself and the crowd enjoys Rod as he rocks his way through a string of classic songs.
The range of songs is quite good. There is the classic "Hot Legs," with Rod Stewart growling his way in a gritty fashion that rarely comes across in the studio. There is an excellent rendition of "Tonight's the Night" that feels more honest and sensual than the studio recording. "Handbags and Gladrags" shows a poignant side of Rod Stewart.
For a change of pace Stewart rocks his way through "Cut Across Shorty," an upbeat song that gets everyone moving. After this song everyone is pumped and Stewart keeps up the pace with another rocker, "Every Picture Tells a Story." The studio version of "Maggie May" is as good as any studio version is, but the live version here is far superior. For some reason Rod Stewart comes across better in this live regarding. If you have ever been a fan of this song you should buy this CD for this song.
Remaining consistent with the quality of the other songs is "Reason to Believe." This version is again, in my opinion, better than the studio version. I think Rod Stewart's voice matches this venue better than a studio. Or perhaps Rod Stewart's voice has reached the point where he sounds great.
"People Get Ready" has wonderful strings backing Rod Stewart's vocals. Rod Stewart does justice to Curtis Mayfield's song. I usually object to the backing vocals in live performances, but the backing vocals on this song are performed well. The pace remains steady in the love song "Have I Told You Lately," yet another winner on this CD. "Tom Traubert's Blues (Waltzing Matilda)" is gloriously poignant and can easily affect your mood, and is yet another in a series of mellow songs. The pace remains slow with the tear-jerker "The First Cut Is the Deepest."
The pace picks up slightly with "Mandolin Wind," particularly as this song gets into the fourth minute, when the speed picks up substantially and Stewart manages a few yells reminiscent of the 1960s. "Highgate Shuffle" is a blues song that Stewart and the band have a lot of fun with, as evidenced by the casual style of the song. I suspect that had they been allowed to go on the song could have been much longer.
The CD finishes with "Stay with Me" and "Having a Party." The former song has dynamic vocals and a fast pace. The last song is a fun song and though Stewart sounds a little tired at the end, it seems to me that he is enjoying himself.
As I have expressed in a number of previous reviews, I am usually not a fan of live albums. However, with improved technology, the right venue and the right artist, the results can be surprising. I consider myself a casual fan of Rod Stewart, but this CD is worthy of having in any pop-rock fan's collection. Rod Stewart sounds very good throughout this CD, and I consider many of these performances to exceed his studio recordings. Stewart is enthusiastic and animated, and the quality of his voice is perfect for the songs and the environment. Fans of live pop albums will want this CD. Fans of Rod Stewart will absolutely require this album.
My first grade theme song .......2005-02-23
When I was in first grade in 1993, my bus driver would always play 95.9 R96, and everyday after school and then a few days apart they played this version of "Having A Party" and I bought this CD 8 years later and still loved that song, and my friends listened to it and all remembered it as a favorite to all of us. Then a few years later I learned to like Rod Stewart even more and the entire CD is very good.

Excellent overview of Rod's career.......2005-05-21
Double disc set of 34 tracks, digitally remastered. Disc One is titled "A Night Out" and contains uptempo and Rock tracks such as "Maggie May" (complete version), "Rhythm of My Heart", the Faces' classic "Stay With Me", and the playful raunch of "Hot Legs" & "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy".
Disc Two - "A Night In" - focuses on Rod the balladeer with his haunting versions of other peoples' songs: "Sailing" (Gavin Sutherland), "Have I Told You Lately" (Van Morrison), "I Don't Want To Talk About It" (Danny Whitten - Crazy Horse); plus his own compositions such as "The Killing of Georgie Pts 1 & 2" and "You're In my Heart (The Final Acclaim)". Best of all is the hard-to-get Python Lee Jackson classic "In a Broken Dream".
Well worth the money.
A near perfect collection.......2002-06-29
The CD is the absolute best collection of Rod Stewart's hits out there. The only reason this missed a 5 star rating is due to the ommission of five songs: Passion, Infatuation, People Get Ready, Forever Young and My Heart Can't Tell You No. However, all five of these songs can be found on Downtrain Train: Selections From The Storyteller Anthology.

Something for everyone on this CD and if you love Rod Stewart you will love this mix of music. Track 13. If only, is a rear joy to listen to this CD. Some tracks are not realy up there in rock and roll heaven, so it have some minor fault to put the "masterpiece mark" on it. Nevertheless. The great Tracks on this one realy shines, like the slow rock and roller called Broken Arrow (Track 3). The voice of Rod Stewart realy fit`s in on this one, and a realaxable "wall of sound" with the right instrumental "plink and plonk " sounds in the back ground. Track 4 It takes two The duet with Tina Turner kicks off and gives you a rock and roll song to clap your`e hands and stamp your`e feet to the groovy rythm and vocal. A real "heartstarter" this one. Anyway my favoruite on this one is Track 7 The Motown Song. It`s a homage to the Motown greatness from back then. From the beginning to the end this one has the right feel and groove all trough. It`s a very enthusiastic song, which realy shines on every note. In other words. It has the right temperature for
feeling happy with a smile on your face, after the listen. The rest is a fine mix with ballad and more uptempo songs, with track 10 Have I told you lately, as a stand out in the "ballad department". Track 12 Downtown Train, written by Tom Waits has hit potensial, and Stewart does it in his own way, and there`s nothing wrong with that, so long it has his creative input stamped all over. To sum-up this is Vagabond joy from Rod Stewart . One of his best CD, ever.
Little Known Gem In Rod Stewart 's Repertoire.......2004-06-02
After seeing Rod Stewart live in concert recently, I went in search of "It Takes Two" which had brought the house down at his show. Although I own many of his CD's, this cut was not on any of the ones I had. Although I bought it strictly for this Rod/Tina Turner duet, I found many more "lesser known" songs I thoroughly enjoy on this one. "Rebel Heart" is classic Rocking Rod for those of us who first fell in love with him in the 1970's. The soulful "When A Man's In Love" is also alone worth the cost of the CD. Equally enjoyable are the classic "Rhythm of My Heart" and his delightful homage to Motown with "The Motown Song." I've been playing this one over and over and pondering why it never achieved the success of his other albums.
Originally released in 1991, it was his 18th album and is dedicated to his father who had recently passed away. It was his father that had the foresight to give him a guitar on this 14th birthday instead of the model railway equipment Rod requested. Rock music owes a deep debt of gratitude to Mr. Robert Joseph Stewart for such an inspirational gift.
Rod Stewart regaining his strenght.......2003-10-19
It doesn't come close to the magnificent "Every Picture Tells A Story", but compared to Rod Stewart's awful 80s output, "Vagabond Heart" is actually a pretty strong and quite diverse album.
The production is a bit slick, but Stewart's performance is soulful and sincere, and "Vagabond Heart" includes a great cover of Runrig's "Rhythm Of My Heart", a couple of very good originals ("Rebel Heart", "When A Man's In Love"), the radio-friendly duet with Tina Turner, "It Takes Two", a fine rendition of Van Morrison's beautiful ballad "Have I Told You Lately", and a swinging rendition of Larry John McNally's "The Motown Song".
"Vagabond Heart" is quite heavily influenced by soul music (and less by disco, fortunately), and even though it contains a lot of "filler", there are also several really good songs here.
Worth picking up for Rod Stewart-fans (unless they're only fans of his disco-period in the 80s).
3 1/2 stars.
A great album by Rod Stewart.......2002-12-02
This is a really good album. I can't compare it to any of his other albums, because this is the only one of his that I have. He has one of the greatest voices in the music industry. I would have to say that the best songs on this album are "Rithym of my Heart", "The Motown Song", "Have I Told You Lately", and "If Only". I like the song "It Takes Two", but, Tina Turner kinda ruins it for me. Don't get me wrong, she's a great singer usually, but on this track, she just doesn't sound right. He really should have found someone else for the duet. Rod just sings so much better than her in this song that she seams to be out of place. Aside from that, this CD is very good. I was actually surprised of how good it was. It's one of my favorites. If you like Rod Stewart, just get the album, it's worth it.

Rod the Mod sexes it up!.......2005-08-29
This lambasted, forgotten wooly masterwork is the ultimate fruition of Rod's relentless fascination with Stonesy sexuality and male bonding, Keith and Mick style. 'Foolish' rocks with frightening regularity and Stewart even takes time out from his hip-swiveling bravado to tenderize our hearts with three of his most achingly heartfelt ballads. While "Every Picture" remains the touchstone by which all great pseudo-rock critics measure Rod, I prefer to take him in all at once, much like the tender schoolgirls who rumple the bedsheets in his dreams.
The closest solo Stewart gets to The Faces!!!!!!!.......2005-04-05
If you love the more "rockin" music that Rod Stewart is associated with than this is the cd for you! I was surprised that this did not carry onto become a classic cd and that I had to wait so long for it to be available!
Every song on this is a winner and most have that rock n roll guitar riffs reminiscent of The Faces (and some Stones songs which also feature Ron Wood).
Buy this cd, and enjoy!
Major Bang for the Buck.......2005-03-17
I'm not a fan of Stewart's cheesey post Faces material but I've always liked this album. The title cut and "Gi' Me Wings" rank among the best of Stewart's rowdy repertoire. Sure, there are some of the usual radio oriented "chick songs", but the good tracks make it all worthwhile.
As for the super low price and the Rhino Flashback label: Don't let it scare you; the remastering job is quite good, although the packaging smacks of bargain bin, but I bought it to listen to, not look at. I don't understand why Rhino didn't issue this on their standard label since the flashback label has been always been for compilations. Maybe we're going to start seeing more reissues released on the label. Personally, I'd prefer to pay more and get the standard packaging and liner notes.
All things considered, I'm quite happy. Sound quality is always my top consideration - and it is excellent.
