To the Bone
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
This two-disc set is a live retrospective featuring 26 mostly (though not entirely) acoustic renditions of Kinks classics and obscurities, and possesses a poignancy and generosity of spirit that raises it several notches above standard Unplugged-style fare. The band's gracefully low-key reinterpretations of relative obscurities like "Picture Book," "Days," "Do You Remember Walter," and "Death of A Clown" are enough to blow a decade and a half's worth of arena-rock dust off the band's reputation. The group's updating of their early punk anthem "I'm Not Like Everybody Else" carries new levels of resonance that the band could scarcely have dreamed of in 1964. The two new studio recordings are a bit slight, but they sport an unfussed sweetness that's hard to argue with. --Scott Schinder

DOWN TO THE BONE SUPERCHARGED.......2007-07-03
I WAS WONDERING IF THIS CD WAS GOING TO BE AS GOOD AS ALL OF DTTB'S OTHERS.IT IS GREAT!! I LOVE IT !! IF YOU LIKE JAMES BROWN & ROY AYERS, YOU GET AN EXTRA TREAT!!THE CD IS WONDERFUL!! THE MORE I PLAY IT, THE MORE I LIKE IT!! I HAVE SEEN THEM IN PERSON TWICE & KEEP WANTING TO GO BACK!! THEY DON'T BEGIN TO GET THE RECOGNITION THAT THEY DESERVE!!I LOVE THEIR MUSIC!!!DTTB is great in person!! I saw & heard them w/ a full band & they kept you rockin!! If you have a chance to see them live & don't, you are really missing the best!! Corrina Grayson is Great on Supercharged!!
A truly great fusion of Jazz and Funk........2007-07-01
This is the new fantastic, great new album from the British contemporary Jazz Funk outfit.
"Supercharged" is the funkiest set to date.
Every track is a winner.
The title song is a full on Funk instrumental on which the horn section excel, as is the slower "Funkin' Around".
"Parkside Shuffle" is a mellower summer like groover (hints of Ramsey Lewis).
Hil St Soul adds her soulful voice to the Incognito like "Smile To Shine" wicked b-line!
Roy Ayers adds scat and vibes to the Jazz Funk stunner "Electric Vibes".
"Space Dust", "Make It Funky" and "Hip City" are fine instrumentals that fuse Jazz and Funk.
The horn and rhythm sections are cooking. Essential.
Prepare to have a great time !!!
This CD is "Jazzy"..........2007-06-27
...I didn't want to say it "Rocks". But it does.
Down to the Bone puts out EXCEPTIONAL CD's. This one is no different.
The song "Supercharged" has got some nice high energy output.
The cool sounding "Smile to Shine" with sharp vocals from Hil St Soul is very infectious!
"FUNKIN' Around" (Bolded to avoid a mis-reading mistake) has got some stong horn melody and definitely a "toe tapper".
"Shake it Up" featuring Corrina Greyson is somewhat of a dissapointment however. It sounded like more of a Pop song to me.
The subdued "Hip City" climaxes to a stong guitar crescendo and finishes off very cleanly.
"Space Dust" is typical funky Down to the Bone, and is reminiscent of many of their famous cuts.
"Make it Funky" has an element of hip-hop, and is a refreshing change of pace from some of the other songs on the CD.
If you like Down to the Bone, you will like the other tunes, but my fingers are getting tired from typing!
I higly recommend the entire album! (OK - just this last note: You GOTTA listen to Cosmic Fuzz! It's is so cool, it's COLD!)
(Oh yeah, one last comment: I own all the other DTTB CD's, and saw them live 3 times. If you like their CD's, don't disappoint yourselves. Keep the dream, and DON'T see them live. They're not as clean and sharp when they're on tour. They don't travel with a full band compliment, and the lead sax guy, "Shilts", likes to be "buzzed" and drink beer as he plays, I saw him have at least 4 Corona Extras. :-(
Turbo Edition.......2007-06-22
I am pleased with this release. As the CD title suggests they took their sound and supercharged it. The arragnements are a little stronger, the electric guitar a little louder and the funk is still alive and well. This is great music to put on when you are hanging out with friends.
Smoothjazz.com Review.......2007-06-20
With reckless, raw energy and rhythm hurling towards you at the speed of a slide trombone in the Tower of Power horn section, SUPERCHARGED is Smooth Jazz with a nitrous injection. This is DTTB's 7th release to date and by far the most irresistible. That's a big claim given the fact that this is the group that gave us "Long Way From Brooklyn" and "Electra Glide," two format staples. SUPERCHARGED burns rubber off the starting line with the title track and let me tell you, it never stops for gas. The guys added three additional horns to the already sizzling non-stop, sax-o-matic playing by Paul "Shilts" Wiemar. Founding member Stuart Wade produced and arranged the stellar SUPERCHARGED. He's managed to capture the very essence of funk and soul. Think Sly & the Family Stone, Average White Band, Booker T. & The MGs and the aforementioned T.O.P. Special guests include Hil St. Soul on the feel-good groove "Smile to Shine," Royer Ayres on the slick joint "Electric Vibes," and Corrina Greyson on the contagious "Shake It Up." Eleven tracks that say summer... even in the middle of winter. This is unabashed, pure, unadulterated, thick and gooey F.U.N.K. There are a lot of choices out there with regard to music these days. Down To The Bone's SUPERCHARGED just made the whole decision process much easier for you... CD it or download it, but load it and load it soon, `cuz summer's here and you're about to get funked. ~SANDY SHORE

Customer Reviews:
Good companion for Battlestar Fans.......2007-05-07
If you're a Battlestar Galatica Fan, this audio is an excellent companion to your collection. Passacaglia, Forgiven, and The Shape of Things to Come are emotional and addictive orchestral soundtracks. Not every song from the first season is included in this CD. The opening credit songs for the UK and the US versions and the battle songs (The Thousandth Landing, Battle on the Asteroid) are included. Battlestar Muzaktica is quite odd and doesn't fit with the collection of songs.
Captures the feel of the show.......2007-04-11
Has a great selection of songs from the 1st season. I like show/movie CDs that you can picture the scenes and emotion of the actors when you hear the song. The Celtic underlays are great, and the Taiko drumming style is very well used for building intensity in the music. If you really like the series, you should probably really enjoy the music as well!
Awesome Soundtrack.......2007-04-11
If you like the music in a scene that just blends in and makes the scene even more emotional or suspenseful, that is what the scores from season one do on this cd. I initially bought it to for the prologue (cylon music) and the two main titles (U.S. and U.K.) but after listening to the entire cd, I have become completely addicted to it. The titles of the scores usually give you a hint of the scene and the liner notes also tell you the episode that they are from but the soundtrack has definitely made rewatching season one an even more intriguing experience. The scores with words, are written by Bear and are in various languages, but the words, especially the opera piece, are actually so dead one with the scene and in this specific scene hilarious. I love this soundtrack. If you are someone who is addicted to really grasping everything that happens in this show and watch and analyze it beyond face value, this is an added bonus to have in your collection. I highly recommend it!!!
BSG.......2007-04-10
Man I love the Classic and the Present BSG's So Inaturally find the SoundTrack/Score A joy and very relaxing. They tend to sound very similar but they are very diffrent.
Agree with everyone else.......2007-03-28
There have been lots of raving reviews of this album, as well as the equally sensational season 2 soundtrack. I just wanted to add my opinion on one track, "Destiny". An earlier review describes an Arabic string instrument being used, but it is actually a biwa, a traditional Japanese instrument that has such a distinct sound that it's hard to imagine it being used for anything other than traditional gagaku music. I don't know if anyone but McCreary has ever tried to use this instrument for something else, but it hardly matters. The fact that McCreary managed to use it so effectively in a piece that is so different from gagaku music is a perfect testament to his unique genius. I'm really looking forward to following McCreary's career.

The Best Of Down To The Bone.......2007-07-11
I Am Not A Overly Big Fan Of This Group, So Buying Their CD's Was Not Really On My Must Buy List! However, Some Of Their Music Is Very Good And Enjoyable To Listen To. The Release Of Their Best Of CD, Was A Timely Thing For Me And Just The Right Amount Of Down To The Bone For My Tastes. A Very Enjoyable CD!
Cruisin music at it's finest.......2007-05-19
I immediately ordered this CD for my brother as a Father's Day gift. I didn't expect anything less from this group...they are true artist at their craft.
The Best of Down to the Bone.......2007-04-10
While on vacation I stumbled across a concert given by Down to the Bone at Lake Tahoe. Absolutely awesome performance and this CD has captured the best of it and their other CD's as well.
original down to the bone group.......2007-04-01
Without any prejudice whatsoever, the original group who made the CD "From Manhattan to Staten" was a far better group in terms of a better rendition, because they were more natural with the African illulations and the drum beats along with organs, trumpets, saxaphones, tom tom, vocals, etc. My humble suggestion is that the original group should be regrouped taking a lead from the the first three(3) CD'S which were made, including "FROM MANHATTAN TO STATEN".If this is done I can assure you by GOD'S will that the CD'S will be a sellout.
A must have for jazz lovers........2007-03-14
I have been following the group for some time and when I found this compilation immediately went to buy it. All the great piesces are there (for a 1 CD compilation that is) and the icing on the cake is the last track , ¨Long way from Brooklin¨. I hope that you will ejoy it as I do every time I listen to it.

Californian Etta James decided against accepting filmmaker Martin Scorcese's personal invitation to sing at The Blues gala in New York in early 2003. The well-celebrated soul and blues queen makes amends here with what is one of the most blues-centered recordings in her expansive discography, bringing her big, no-nonsense voice and her feisty, proud woman's point of view to bear on classics, many identified with Chicago. The likes of Howlin' Wolf's "Smokestack Lightnin'," Jimmy Reed's "Hush Hush," and Muddy Waters's "Got My Mojo Working" may be hackneyed choices, but she seizes each of a dozen as her own, and clearly, as she says herself, these are the blues songs that touch her the deepest. No argument here. --Frank-John Hadley
Customer Reviews:
Etta is the Queen of the Blues.......2007-07-16
This is a spectacular effort from one of the true legends of the blues. EVERY cut is a killer track, the selection is incredible. Just buy it!
Etta at Her Best.......2007-07-07
With the renewed interest in blues by a new generation, Etta James in recent years has published many of the old favorites on fresh CDs. This recording is an excellent example of the old-time blues that should please all fans, young and old. I am a blues fan and an Etta James junkie. I have always claimed that she is the best that ever was. Since I bagan going blind, my appreciation of her magnificent voice is only heightened. Any of her recordings--old or new, studio or live performances, are essential for a true appreciation of the genre. However, this CD, in addition to being educational, great example of the genre, funky song choicees and of excellent quality, is simply fun.
So Sad.......2007-06-25
I can't even believe that this was actually Etta James. She must have been having a very bad day when she cut this one. Her voice is empty, weak, emotionless and she sounds exactly the same in every single track. The best part of it are her sons who play back-up. I know what she is capable of so I am just chalking it up to illness or something. I don't even want to listen to it again.
ETTA IS OUT DOING THE BEST BLUES CLASSICS.......2007-02-28
YOU HAVE HEARD ALL THESE SONG'S BEFORE BUT NOT LIKE MISS ETTA JAMES CAN DO THEM. I LOVE ALL THE 50'S AND 60'S ETTA LOVE CLASSICS BUT THE BLUES IS HER CALLING. SHE IS THE BEST LIVE PERFORMER I KNOW, HER LEGS MAY BE A LITTLE SHAKEY BUT YOU WILL NEVER HEAR HER SING ANY SONG THE SAME WAY TWICE SOMETIMES SHE'LL SLOW SONG DOWN AND MAKE YOU CRY. AND SOMETIMES SHE WILL GET FUNKY ON A LOVE SONG AND MAKE IT RAUNCHY SO THAT YOU ARE LAUGHING AND SMILING INSTEAD OF CRYING. I SWEAR SHE CAN READ THE CROWD SO WELL SHE KNOWS WHAT THE AUDIENCE HAS IN THERE HEART'S AND SHE WILL GIVE YOU WHAT YOU NEED. IT'S A PRIVATE SHOW FOR EACH AND EVERY PERSON IN THE ROOM. BUY THIS ALBUM AND PLAY IT WHEN YOU ARE IN ANY KIND OF MOOD OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
Darvin Deva Queen.......2007-02-07
It is only a few artists that can evolve from one genre to another and capture and create in each one. This album proves that with time Etta ages like fine wine. She is light and sassy in the beginning but smooth and brilliant as time goes by.

The Destroyers have been called a glorified bar band, yet they deserve credit for introducing '80s mainstreamers to early rockers such as Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley. They also reintroduced classic blues forms to rock radio, only in a little more electrified form. Hell, they even electrified Hank Williams's "Move It On Over." The aforementioned artists are all represented on this compilation, which in many ways also displays how much Thorogood's songs owe to the originals. The Thorogood-penned title cut, for instance, owes an unmistakable debt to Bo Diddley (who appeared in the video). And when Thorogood sandwiches John Lee Hooker's "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" between his own "I Drink Alone" and "If You Don't Stop Drinkin'," it tough to miss the connection. If you buy only one Thorogood album, this should be it. --Bill Holdship
Customer Reviews:
Rockin' Blues.......2006-06-24
There are few that can out rock this album. It is basic and pure the way the rockin' blues was meant to be. This is music that speaks to a soul that is crying out for tenderness while standing steadfast and defiant. George reaches back some 30 years to bring rocks beginnings to modern day style. It is still bad to the bone.
Solid Thorogood.......2003-06-01
Bad to the Bone put George on the map of songwriters and will probably be his signature song!
This is a showcase release that is a change of pace and an enjoyable listen!
Classic Thorogood.......2002-03-11
BAD TO THE BONE is classic George Thorogood and his band the Destroyers. On this album we have 10 slabs of great blues-rock music that all music fans will enjoy. George helped to bring alot of the classic blues masters into the mainstream back in the 80's and early 90's when he was in his prime. On this album we have his classic title track that is enough of a reason to buy this album, but I think that the other songs are great also. BACK TO WENTZVILLE, NOBODY BUT ME, MISS LUANN, NO PARTICULAR PLACE TO GO are just furious rockin tunes that will get you moveing in no time. BLUE HIGHWAY, IT'S A SIN, AS THE YEARS GO PASSING BY are slower blues tempo songs that are pulled off very well here. George is still rockin 20 years after this release and hopefully we will still be getting some great music from him in the years to come
Classic George, as always........1998-09-13
This album features George's "big hit," Bad to the Bone, reason alone for getting it. Compared to his other albums, this has more slow numbers than usual. But songs like the opening track, Back To Wentzville, are so rockin' that they may inspire you to play the guitar, like it did for me. This really shows how George can pick up the pace or slow it down smoothly, like few can.

Bridging the channel between smooth jazz and hip-bop/acid jazz are Down to the Bone, a band that mixes live horns with grooves and beats and comes up with something classy smooth. Down to the Bone are more about the dance floor than the listening room, but they do spice the mix with some up-front horn charts and often use interesting instrumentation (is that an oboe?) to keep things moving. --S. One of the best listening experiences ever.......2007-04-12
Rarely do I listen to an album that I love beginning to end, but this one succeeds easily. I never get tired of hearing it, and like another reviewer commented, it just makes me happy all the way through -- it's a great pick-me-up after a long, hard day. I can't help but MOVE to the complex layers of rhythm and music, all interwoven with amazing balance, and even though I've listened countless times now, it seems I'm always picking up some new element in the sound. Some groups play music, others MAKE music. DTTB is definitely in that latter category.
Can someone explain.......2005-10-25
why this album cost nearly $60? I was looking to buy it, but not for that kinda price. My "lone star" rating does not reflect my review but it's cost.
NOT THAT INSPIRED.......2004-08-31
When I heard "brooklyn heights" I hoped that this band had other songs in the same vein, but they do not.
The rest of the cd sounds like uninspired acid-jazz, with not enough musical chances taken.
"Brooklyn Heights" is such a great track, that it makes the rest of the cd seem inferior!
It seems like these dudes have the right idea of musicality, but they don't seem to take it as far as they should.
It sounds like they don't want to scare off their "smooth jazz" audience, so they keep the songs flat, and boring.
Had potential, but falls flat.

DTTB Just Keeps on Keepin' on with Killer Grooves.......2000-12-09
I have practically worn out my copies of "From Manhattan to Staten" and "The Urban Grooves," so as soon I heard that "Spread the Word" was being released I knew I had to have it right away. DTTB has released another masterpiece of jazz funk that will knock you right out of your shoes. The fellas have taken a slightly different turn in this effort, with all the tracks having a '70s feel to them (similar to those great musical scores from Blaxploitation movies like "Shaft," "Super Fly," "The Mack," and "Trouble Man"), but from the first note of the CD you will hypnotized and transported to a zone where you find yourself tapping your feet, swaying your body from side to side, and bobbing your head to the beat.
As usual for DTTB, this is a strong CD from beginning to end with not a filler to be found. After listening to "Spread the Word" for the 6th time (in 2 days) I'm having a hard time deciding what my favorite tracks are, but I especially like the grooves of "Keep on Keepin' on," "Sound as a Pound," "Righteous Reeds," "Downtown Shuffle," "The Lowdown (acid jazz legend Gota plays drums on this track)," and "Mighty, Mighty Fine."
I urge you to run--don't walk--and snap up this CD. It's excellent background music for a party, your stairmaster routine, driving around town, when you're toiling away at the office, anytime your spirit and mood needs lifting. "Spread the Word" provides a 61 minute cure for what ails you.
Don't buy a new comforter this winter............2000-11-20
This CD COOKS....DTTB haven't lost their touch in fact it has been refined. Their CD's are a history of of 70's grooves including the Breckers/Players Assn./Roy Ayers/ Blackbyrds/ALL black exploitation film soundtracks.... Keep on Keepin' On opens the CD and PLEASE listen to this CD several times-I guarantee you will hear another track LATER that will replace your favorite track. I'm not sure when this is going to be available in the US-but why wait?!!

Bone Days CD John Trudell.......2007-02-22
This CD speaks to the heart. Fantastic, such talent. John Trudell is a true word weaver.
Spiritual food for mind , heart and soul.......2004-04-02
I discovered John Trudell with this album and I deeply fell in love with this man. When I heard these album's songs for the first time, I was definitely hooked and deeply moved. I can't help listening to this cd again and again...The music, beautiful blues, mixed with traditional Native American voice and music, and THIS VOICE, John Trudell's voice - deep, beautiful voice which send vibrations and thrills through all my being. Everyone who hear such a voice can't help being under a spell.
And then THE WORDS, such words as "My heart doesn't hurt anymore, but my soul does. Maybe that's what soules are for, to take the hurt the heart can't take." And then THE MAN behind this voice and behind these words...
I wanted to know more about this artist, and then I went back through his discography and discovered more about the man too. John Trudell speack about things which can't leave people cold.
As a woman, a mother and an human being this man touched me,deeply...mind, heart and soul. Please, listen to his voice, please listen to his "spoken words", his music. John Trudell is such an artist, such a man, such a treasure for the humanity. I wish everybody in the world could open his mind and his heart to this man's words.
PS: It's the same review bellow, but I re-wrote it because a lot of grammatical mistakes!! I am afraid everyone has noticed that English isn't my native language. But I was so eager to share my feelings about this album that I haven't noticed the wrong words I used and the mistakes I wrote. But I wasn't wrong about my feelings, and the "power"of John Trudell's voice and songs.

An Oasis of Sanity in an Insane World.......2002-08-15
I recently purchased this CD 'Bone Days' and what can I say? A superlative compilation of music, lyrics, spoken words and song. Highly intelligent and deeply, deeply profound. A delight to the senses. An emotional rollercoaster. Happiness, inspiration, sadness, anger, despair. As I write this review I am actually listening to this very CD!
I would like to conclude this review by expressing my gratitude and appreciation to John T, Angelina Jolie and the complete 'cast and crew' who wrote, compiled and produced this exceptionally fine and highly enjoyable album. Five hundred years plus and society, 'at large' seemingly and tragically remains very blind and extremely deaf to the Wisdom and Knowledge being shared so generously, with us, by Native individuals such as John Trudell. Yes, indeed, John "live and learn are the Seasons...."
To the Bone.......2002-04-06
Again John Trudell cuts to the bone with this new album. He has been my hero for decades and each time I hear his words they still have power to move me. I cry, I get angry and I am deeply moved by this man who has touched the gods and come back with a message for us. I think anyone can relate to the expressions he shares with us. Love, happiness, blues, anger and fleeting joy. As in the title track of Bone Days " The great search for truth, every meaning has a meaning, Dark and light have their reason, Live and learn are the seasons."
His songs of love are exquisite. Like "Takes my breath" leave me feeling. . .

Product Description
The follow-up to Black Labs critically acclaimed Geffen debut Your Body Above Me (feat. "Wash it Away," Time Ago), See the Sun is a lush, epic union of heartbreak and rock & roll, diamond-cut lyrics set to hard candy melodies, raging guitars and gin-soaked stories of love, loss and redemption. Like U2 and Live and the Goo's getting drunk together. Like a five star hotel, you check in and youre sorry to check out. Their new album has a depth and emotional range that broadens with each listen. Grammy award-winning engineer Tom Lord-Alge (Live, Blink 182) mixed most of the album. What shines brightest is the band's pop sensibility the liquid swirl of "Remember," the epic sweep of "See the Sun," the raging loss of "Without You," and the open-armed surrender of "Lonely Boy." Black Lab has contributed to the soundtracks of Spider Man, Can't Hardly Wait, Varsity Blues, Permanent Midnight, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Party of Five, What I Like About You, MTV's The Real World, and most recently, Blade: Trinity.

Another good addition to collection.......2007-02-11
If you like black lab then what can I say you'll enjoy it. I'm not one to analyze every aspect. If it makes feel like moving then that is all I care. I think I almost like it better than their first. You won't waste your money.
Amazing CD.......2007-01-05
I've had this cd for over 2 months now and I can't stop listening to it. If you loved Black Lab back in the 90s, you will love them even more. Songs like Lonely Boy and Remember will stay in your mind for days. This is a must buy!!
Perfect!.......2006-12-26
Ever since I heard 'Learn To Crawl' on the Spider-Man Motion Picture Soundtrack I had a thirst to hear more of Black Lab's music. I bought this CD, praying I would not be let down. I wasn't one tiny bit. I LOVE this CD! I wasn't too pleased with Your Body Above Me, which I found moderately okay. I found this much superior. The only song I didn't like was Ecstasy, it just didn't have a catchy beat or lyrics and wasn't very memorable. With awsome songs like 'Lifelike' 'Wide Open' 'Without You' and 'Tell Me Why,' this CD will keep you entertained for hours while you hum along to your favourite songs. The lyrics were insightful and catchy. The music fitted perfectly to each and every song, each song being unique in it's own special way. Buy this CD, it's not a waste of money. Black Lab is an awsome bands which deserves more recognition. After listening for this, I have a thirst for a new album by Black Lab!
great from start to finish.......2006-10-30
This is a great, great CD. It is not as impressive as 'Your Body Above Me', which is truly a masterpeice, but this is a great CD. Fantastic vocals and melodies, unforgettable. A great CD from a truly incredible band. Glad to see they are still around and putting out great music, anxious to hear their next effort.
Don't buy this here.......2006-03-13
This is a very good album by a very underrated post-grunge band. This album is very different from "Your Body Above Me", but it's still a very solid, well-crafted effort. One gripe about it iss how rare it is,m though. It took me forever to find it, and I didn't want to pay $20 for it here, so I searched the internet. There is a webiste called Alternativeaddiction.com (google it). They loved this album, and they sell it for a mere $8 for download. And you pay through PayPal, so its a safe, fast transaction. So do yourself a fovor: but his great album and, if you haven't already, get "Your Body Above Me" (it's better). And buy "See the Sun" on Alternative Addiction's website.
Enjoy!

Album Description
Chilled down and grooved up, the masters of the U.K.'s jazz scene, Down To The Bone, issue another powerhouse with "SPREAD LOVE LIKE WILDFIRE." Killer horns, funked rhythms, and Neil Cowley's signature down-tempo keys give the set a cool, retro vibe that begs to be danced to. Play it loud.
"The sound on this album," reflects founder and architect Stuart Wade, "is much funkier and more energetic. The jazz/funk and fusion of the '60s and '70s had a great deal of influence on me. Put this all together with today's retro/club/dance influences and you have the sound I am trying to create. I feel this is exactly what the band's sound is." To do so, Wade brought on an incredible horn section - Richard Wargent (sax), Mike Kearsey (trombone), and Jon Scott (trumpet) - that gives the tunes a powerful punch of funk. Also joining the collective is flutist Jeremy Steig on Wildfire Woman and Memphis Groove. The latter tune marks Wade's nod to Herbie Mann's R&B-infused jazz flute on MEMPHIS TWO-STEP and MEMPHIS UNDERGROUND. Wildfire Woman calls to mind freewheeling '60s and '70s San Francisco. "It has that West Coast groovy funk and folk feel that came out of that city's musical melting pot, where rock met up with all sorts of sounds and styles," Wade explains. "You can hear my love of some of the 'Blaxploitation' soundtracks of those decades and, of course, the Brazilian and samba feel that I love so much."

Slammin'!.......2005-12-19
Ain't enough superlatives to describe this but I want more! I kind of fell out of the loop after DTTB's first album, but I see they ain't lost their touch. Now I want their entire catalog! All of the cuts are excellent, but my favorite cut is "Angel Baby" which came as a shock to me at first (I wasn't expecting any vocal tracks). The bass player is just awesome and the vocals infect the groove instead of merely riding on top.
Back on track.......2005-10-12
Been a fan of DTTB since I first heard Brooklyn Heights on a Palm Springs radio station back in 2000. Bought that album and then The Urban Grooves and was definately hooked on the sound at that point. Spread The Word was equally as good and has some of my favorite tracks on it: Mighty, Mighty Fine and Downtown Shuffle. The following two albums didn't do a lot for me, so I kept listening to the other three because I never tired of it.
Spread/Wildfire has had me listening almost non-stop ever since I first put it in about three weeks ago. I work in Russia so I had to wait until I got back to the States to get my order from Amazon. Memphis Groove caught my attention like the first time I heard Staten Island Groove. I knew this was going to be good. Personally, I'm not a fan of lyrical music but I must admit I like Angel Baby.
Took a trip with the kids and THEY kept asking me to play songs over and over, especially Pure Funk. They are 4 and 2 years old and know good music when they hear it. Couldn't wait to get to my brothers house and pop the CD in and start drumming on his set.
This CD puts DTTB back where I feel they left off after Spread The Word.
Stuart, this one kicks a$$.
Solid, But Not Soaring.......2005-10-04
This sixth effort from Down to the Bone is a continuation of the pared down sound which debuted in "Cellar Funk." As always the band plays tight, and it's good to hear the horns again after their relative absence from "Cellar"...the boys leave no doubt that they still can funk out. Having said that, "Spread Love" doesn't give me goosebumps like the previous releases. When I listen to DTTB's other CDs it's easy for me to lose myself in the music because it is adventurous. They took all those soul, disco, latin, '70s blaxploitation movie grooves, and garage influences and blended them into something unexpected and original...yet maintaining 100 percent of the funk (a great example of this is the title track from "Crazy Vibes and Things"). Here the funk is more straightforward, which is fine but it doesn't stay with me after I hear the track. In addition the absence of keyboardist Neil Angilley is definitely felt in this effort, as he only wrote and played on "Mystic Samba." In my opinion Angilley's talents really made DTTB head and shoulders above their contemporaries, as anyone who has seen the band live can attest (his live reworking of "The Zodiac" completely blew away the studio version, unbelievable as that may be since that CD track was simply amazing).
My recommendation is to go ahead and buy this CD if you are looking for music that will leave you tapping your toes, but if you're looking for DTTB that will knock your socks off get their previous works.
Now This is Funk.......2005-10-03
The title of this CD is misleading: it is not a compilation of love songs, but track after track of solid funk. I never get tired of listening to this one.
The boys from across the "pond" are hotter than ever!.......2005-08-27
This is their best to date, in my opinion! Stuart Wade, Shilts, & others just know how, when, and where to put it down. I do miss Neil Angelley (sp?) on keys, but they fare just fine in spite of his absence. High energy, innovative, and just FUNKY acid jazz at its best. To say I "love" these guys is a gross understatement! Just listen...period!
