Captures the Imagination.......2007-06-24
The first Hendrix I owned was Voodoo Soup. Great place to begin your collection by starting at the end of his career. This is the mature Hendrix who is already a huge star and he's gone beyond the original lineup of The Experience and his period with Band of Gypsies into something new. Lots of crunchy guitar solos like Midnight, Pali Gap and Peace in Mississippi which take it into 1970 and beyond the psychedelia of the 60's
Desert Island Disc - if only every copy of this CD were on one.......2007-04-09
If someone had previously seriously suggested to me that some day people might actually start to like this album in a sort of Hendrixian post-modernist way, I would either have thought they were playing some kind of practical joke or were friends of the Alan Douglas family. But the out-of-print label can make even the most awful releases seem somehow more attractive once the bargain bins have emptied and they are no longer available in large quantities, and I fear that is the case here. Buy this only if you have 'First Rays' from Experience Hendrix and want to appreciate just how easy it is to mess up the job of assembling Jimi's final studio album. The pre-Douglasized versions on 'First Rays' are THE versions - the mix, the sound, is far more like that of Jimi's own mixes. Voodoo Soup is a release by the artist Alan Douglas and his sessionmen using the tapes of Jimi Hendrix as his instrument, and is to be seen as a continuation of 'Crash Landing' and 'Midnight Lightning', another two dismal releases not worth tracking down for those interested. As a Hendrix record producer he allowed himself to tamper just too much with the artist's product, his live releases Woodstock and Isle of Wight suffering equally from this tendency. The only Douglas releases worth listening to are 'Nine to the Universe', although the full jams are now available on various Dagger releases, and of course 'Blues', which must be Douglas' career highlight. Let's all be grateful that finally as close to the intended album as possible came out with EH's 'First Rays'.
Better than you'd expect.......2006-07-31
I got this CD expecting, no, planning to hate it. I already have First Rays Of The Rising Sun, which is not only great, but released with the full cooperation of the Hendrix family. Voodoo Soup, on the other hand, was released as an Alan Douglas production--he's the guy who seemed hell bent on reinventing Jimi Hendrix into his own personal vision. In other words, not exactly neutral or even respectful of what Hendrix might have actually wanted or intended for this album.
So I was very pleasantly surprised to hear something that actually sounds comfortable next to Electric Ladyland. The overdubs and rerecorded sections are done with far more taste than such misbegotten albums like Midnight Lightning. Truth be told, owning both Voodoo Soup AND First Rays Of the Rising Sun is a good idea. Both sound appropriate, just different in approach. You might even like to play producer yourself and mix 'n' match--that's apparently what Jimi himself was doing according to the sources I've read. The point is, listen first then judge. Worth tracking down.
Sacrilege to the Hendrix Fan.......2005-07-22
Probably Alan Douglas's biggest slap in the face to Hendrix fans, Voodoo Soup was supposed to be the outtakes album that got it right. However, added effects by Douglas and more overdubs by people some 25 years after the fact didn't do Hendrix (or his fans) any kind of justice. He brought the former drummer of the Knack in to overdub the drums on Room Full of Mirrors and Stepping Stone just because he worked for Douglas and could play the drums. Unforgivable. Somehow I don't think Jimi would have liked that. Why not bring in Mitch Mitchell? He's still alive! And, of course, he was actually Jimi's drummer.
Skip this one. Get First Rays instead.
Better than first rays.......2005-01-25
Yes this is the last alan douglas product, so everybody has to hate it.
But listen to it. It's very good and it stands better as a whole than the first rays cd. All the tracks are first rate, not demos, and the drums added on stepping stone and mirror make these songs sound better.
The tracklisting is good and with a better balance than on first rays, wich has too many heavy songs. Of course, one may regrets the absence of Hey baby, but it's compensate with the inclusion of Pali gap.
In fact, you need both : first rays and vodoo soup. But don't forget the later which is hard to find. And as a conclusion, I would be very pleased wich a next try from the Hendrix estate : let's ask Billy Cox and Mitch Mitchel to propose a new tracklisting !

Funk Soup.......2005-08-26
I saw the group performing at the Gibson Lounge during the
2004 Memphis Music Heroes Awards and I really enjoyed it.
Their music in the FUNK SOUP is as Jazz with a Memphis Blues
heritage should be in our days.
The sound is a hands down winner thanks to the special care of their guitarist mr.Nico Lyras who also runs the Memphis based Cotton Row Recording Studios.
The favorable reception of this cd may be seen at the national jazz radio stations charts and is well understood.
I'm waiting anxiously for their next release and I would like to see a vocalist addition for selected pieces.
Outstanding!.......2005-07-01
I saw Voodoo Village last year at our annual Jazz festival here and thought they were one of the highlights of the festival. Their CD is very fresh and alive. I would have to rank in as one of my top 10 CDs.
soup has some spice in it,.......2004-10-19
this is a great cd, full of funk and soul and great players, its
got some 'down to the bone' but not the same songs that sound the
same as dttb tho, each song is fresh and new and I liked that
about it, the dvd is nothing to get excited about tho that came
with it, but 13 songs and theres not a bad one to hear, get it,
Good Soup.......2004-05-18
Wow, what a great cd.I bought this cd very blindly as I had never had of the band and only relied on the recommendations. From the opening track you can feel the funk from this band and I agree with the other reviewers that its too close to the Rippingtons - good or bad ? 'Memphis underground and 'after the sermon' are my favourites. The DVD bonus also helps to you to feel the funk. Cant wait for their next project.
FUNKY FUNKY SOUP.......2004-01-19
This a great CD. I agree with one reviewer that it had a touch of the Rippington's and I think they shoul lose that. The grooves are tasty and the funk is thick and steamy. This CD will have you out of your seat dancing one moment and sitting back licking your lips with some tasy vocals. Hopefully, this group will stick together and make the next CD even better. But this is a must have for all you that like a little funk with their jazz.
