20th Century Masters: The Best Of Steppenwolf (Millennium Collection) [Original recording remastered]

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Steppenwolf earned its place in the rock pantheon thanks to "Born to Be Wild," the deathless classic immortalized in the 1969 counterculture flick Easy Rider. But there was more to John Kay & Co. than a theme song for motorcycle rallies. Steppenwolf also offered social commentary in the form of "Snowblind Friend" and "The Pusher," prime psychedelia ("Magic Carpet Ride"), and plenty of good-time hard rock ("Hey Lawdy Mama," "Rock Me"). In some ways, they were the thinking person's hard rock band (a specialty niche, to be sure, with Kay's band taking their name, after all, from a Hermann Hesse novel). Alas, like so many examples of MCA's 20th Century Masters collection, this Steppenwolf set contains some fine music, but is inferior to a previous package--1999's All-Time Greatest Hits, which offers many more tracks for just a couple more bucks. --Daniel Durchholz

5 out of 5 stars one thing leads to another.......2007-05-05

Just got it takes a while maybe by about 12:00 to-night it will be a full fact flight but as of right now I'm so glad I finally went out and got me some Steppenwolf even if it is the Rock and Roll band.

All that stuff`s on the web about where they came from and who`s who so I won`t trash that again here but I will say as a small time musician that plays along I really do love this album and all the songs that`s on it.

Somebody went to a lot of work picking out the songs `cause they`re all from different albums I guess but the right ones are here if you just want a taste or a small meal.

The cover is kinda like a lot of others but I see it`s all just rock and roll and that`s that but if you like Rock Art there`s the full records by this band and they`re great especially if you`re UI even so they`re still not like what everybody else did and that speaks for itself.

Unless you were born in the stone age there`s a song called Born to be Wild on this CD and it`s one you have to listen to a couple of times to find a sweet place to listen maybe ten thousand feet.

Magic Carpet Ride is next not bad but if you`ve heard it an hundred times or more you might try and find the other solution in between the lines just the same some fair Rock and Roll here.

It`s Never Too Late follows a track for those that might want a Ballad in their life.

Rock Me is next.... Rock me Baby Rock me Baby all night long!

Snowblind Friend

So far it sounds like somebody`s funeral...! Seriously. Some form of blues I guess but this is Rock and Roll.

Some tasty guitar and an all out voice are all you need to put anything past me and this album has it all.

There`s five more tracks and they`re all just perfect.

I like Alice Cooper, Yes, The Rolling Stones and one Ted Nugent album but Steppenwolf is just the best of all. What I mean is there`s no way to put Steppenwolf down as just another band they`re in class all on their own so if you want a piece of it all give this one a try.

These guys still tour I found the website that books them by mistake on a search and I thought I`d put that down maybe we can see these guys at the Superbowl if enough people want to see something big for change.

Anyways that`s it take care of it.

5 out of 5 stars this is important in a hard rock collection!.......2005-03-29

i just wanna say this! if you do not have steppenwolf in your collection, your collection is nothing. standout tracks are "Born To Be Wild" Magic Carpet Ride" and "It's Never Too Late" get this compilation cd and rock out!

5 out of 5 stars Good introduction!.......2004-06-10

This was the first Steppenwolf album I bought, and it really got me hooked. On long drives between college and home I just pop this in and let it run. It really got me hooked on John Kay, and I'm slowly amassing more stuff. Beat Goes On put out a couple of good double albums that are worth looking for too, one with Steppenwolf/Steppenwolf The Second and another with At Your Birthday Party/Steppenwolf 7. I am very happy with this CD! There isn't a weak track on it, and for introduction purposes it's right on.

3 out of 5 stars For the casual fan.......2003-12-01

I must admit, this is a pretty good collection, but you'll only be truly satisfied if you're a casual fan of Steppenwolf. Otherwise, buy the British import "The Very Best of Steppenwolf" or their entire collection.

3 out of 5 stars Great, but lacking.......2002-12-29

I bought this CD because I am a fan of Steppenwolf, and I wanted a CD with just their best songs on it; this gave it to me. No more, no less. I found it disappointing that it doesn't have the entire song of any of the songs, it just does that annoying fade out when it's getting close to the end. But for [money], hey what can you expect? Buy it.

2004's remastered best of cds under the millenium collection sound better than ever; these are studio mixes the way they are supposed to sound. This particular disc is the sampler; a song from each, a best of the best ofs. It will give you an idea of just how fresh this stuff sounds! Happy collecting!
