Change has been a constant in Chris Cornell's life since Soundgarden split in 1997. Sober and over 40 now, he lives in France with his wife and daughter. His first solo album (1999's Euphoria Morning) was lauded in the press, but disregarded by the public. And his supergroup Audioslave eventually fizzled after a trio of albums. But on Cornell's long-awaited sophomore solo effort, it's obvious something hasn't been altered: the voice, a distinguished instrument still pure and resonant--and authoritative enough to take on Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" and turn it from throbbing dancefloor anthem to portentous ballad. The unforeseen cover is sequenced midway through 14 tracks that have Cornell softening the edges of his music without losing the power of the messenger. No less than a half-dozen songs have hit potential, including "Arms Around Your Love," with its soaring chorus, the R&B-flecked "She'll Never Be Your Man," and "No Such Thing," where restrained verses give way to crunchy-riffed choruses. He uses the bluesy "Safe and Sound" to call for peace, asking "Why can't we pull it together?" Ten years after the breakup of his pioneering band, Chris Cornell has done just that, and it's evident that the change has done him good. --Scott Holter
Album Description
Carry On is the 13th album by two-time Grammy winner, singer-songwriter and voice of a generation, Chris Cornell. Steered by Grammy Award-winning British super- producer Steve Lillywhite (U2, Rolling Stones, Morrissey, Dave Matthews Band),
Carry On is a mature and content departure from the acrimonious artist who brought us Soundgarden, Audioslave and Temple of the Dog.
The new album's fourteen tracks offer the bluesy and soulful "Safe and Sound," psychedelic "Scar On The Sky," country-flavored "Finally Forever"... paeans to persistence in "Disappearing Act" and a slow-grind cover of Michael Jackson's "Billy Jean" that gives the familiar song a completely new feeling. More personal selections include "Ghost," "Arms Around Your Love" and "She'll Never Be Your Man" and alt-rock experimentations ("Killing Birds" the anthemic "Silence the Voices"). Fans of Soundgarden and Audioslave will appreciate the harder edge of "No Such Thing" and "Poison Eye" and the redemptive "Your Soul Today."
Carry On also includes the Top 10 European smash hit "You Know My Name," the main title song for the current James Bond theatrical release, Casino Royale, appearing for the first time on a full-length release. Cornell wrote and recorded the track with long-time James Bond composer David Arnold for the film.
With this collection of songs, it is evident that Cornell was inspired by songwriters from Elvis Costello to Tom Waits. Cornell says that his own lyrical approach leans on stream-of-consciousness, "getting out of my own way" to allow themes to naturally arise, whether topical or biographical. "The most exciting thing is to let yourself expose your true, vulnerable feelings, which is what resonates with people most," he explains. As far as his vocal style, he points to such R&B singers as Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin for showing masterfully how emotion can best be conveyed, even in subtle phrasing, also praising Bob Marley's expressive range and Tom Waits' use of his voice as an instrument.

Let me visit your arms.......2007-07-17
What a great singer and songwriter. I'm so glad he's still making albums after Soundgarden. My favs are Poison Eye, Your Soul Today, Finally Forever, and Disappearing Act.
Great solo album!.......2007-07-17
I love the new cd! It gets better and better the more I listen to it and is on its way to being one of my favorites. It's different than anything he's done, which is refreshing. It's still Chris Cornell though...creative lyrics, great music, amazing voice! It shows his growth and maturity pesonally and as an artist. It's an album album that would fit in with anyone's collection, regardless of your main music taste, and offers a little something for everyone. I would definitely recommed it!
Audioslave and Soundgarden fans will be pleased with this CD.......2007-07-16
A Wonderful collection of tunes including the theme from James Bond's Casino royal, this collection includes the hard-hitting "She'll Never Be Your Man" and the Soundgarden-esque "My Blind Eye". Cornell has really matured greatly from his last solo offering, and combines his Temple of the Dog, Soundgarden and Audioslave stylings into a cohesive whole.
Excellent.......2007-07-16
I have no idea why some of these reviews written by "Cornell fans" are so strongly aginst this album.
I left this album in my car cd player for about a month straight and could not get enough of it...the majority of the tracks are excellent.
I hope that it does not end up as underrated as his first solo album.
His voice may be getting strained after all these years of abusing it with his aggressive singing, but he still manages to make it work on this album.
a good continuation of euphoria mornig.......2007-07-16
Not exactly what you would expect from a guy who used to front Soundgarden and Audioslave but a good effort. "No Such Thing" rocks but you can see the soul influence on other songs. Cornell is singing well on this album, not the flatout sound from some Audioslave tracks but still great range. The Bond song is exactly what the Bond song is supposed to be.

This is a definitive best-of from the scathingly satiric, invariably tuneful band that arose from the ashes of The Housemartins. Sadly, Paul Heaton and friends have always been too twee and clever for the colonies, though classics like "My Book" and "Old Red Eyes Is Back" deserved better. A lovely, sing-along new track, "One Last Love Song," sounds like a farewell to arms, while the limited-edition disc of B sides proves that only XTC can match them in terms of high-caliber throwaways. --Jeff Bateman

Another good product of British Pop & Rock... Get it!.......2006-10-26
If you like British Pop & Rock in the style of Al Stewart, 10cc and even Cliff Richard, try The Beautiful South. I don't know much about the musical background of these guys, but they make pretty Pop music. "Carry On Up The Charts" is an American-made compilation of their greatest hits, but certainly is a good one.
Criminally Underappreciated.......2006-05-18
I love The Beautiful South and this album includes almost all of their best songs. If you're new to this band, this is the collection to start out with, you'll probably also want to add Solid Bronze. Eight of the songs in these albums overlap, but listeners who are turned off by the tweeness of Song for Whoever, My Book, or I need a Little Time, will probably appreciate the somewhat softer irreverence of Rotterdam, Perfect 10 and Dont Marry Him Have Me.
Most yanks like myself are not familiar with this band, because they recieve no radio play. I was introduced to them by a dear friend and have been hooked ever since. The catchiness of ther melodies are unmatched. Their cover work of Everybody's Talkin and Dream a Little Dream are better than the originals. This is a band with members that can actually sing and juxtapose beautiful music with witty social commentary.
Music Magic.......2005-10-26
a suberb band with a message and music that won't make you run screaming from the room, more please
the band that should've been huge (in the u.s.).......2005-10-11
we americans are often about as bright as alaska in january, and the fact that the beautiful south is criminally ignored here in the united states only further cements that feeling. and that's maybe the reason the beautiful south never caught on in the u.s.
perhaps the beautiful south were just too clever. perhaps it was paul heaton's savage lyrics wrapped around pleasant and pretty sounding melodies. maybe it was because the beautiful south put out their best stuff during the age when kurt cobain and co. ruled the charts. whatever the case may be, the beautiful south penned some of the most beautiful, sad, funny, and original songs i've ever heard.
it's difficult to describe the beautiful south's sound. it's not 'easy listening,' it's not 'adult contemporary,' it's not 'jazzy,' it's not 'indie.' they're one of those bands who just write solid songs with memorable melodies and lyrics. and 'carry on up the charts...' showcases just about all the band's greatest 'hits' and singles. for the newbie, all the essentials are here: song for whoever, i'll sail this ship alone, we are each other, 36D, a little time, etc. paul heaton has an impeccable gift for melody and never it is more evident than on tracks like 'we are each other.' the call and response between paul and brianna is just a whole lot of fun. there's hardly a beautiful south song that once in your head you won't hum for days.
that 'carry on up the charts' was a runaway success in the u.k. shouldn't come as any surprise to anyone who gives the band a listen. and if you've not heard the beautiful south yet, do yourself a favor and buy a ticket. you'll be glad you did.
The definitive best of .......2005-04-12
Hats off to inventiveness, but The Beautiful South began to go adrift after "Miaow". If you could capture the band's signature sound, "Carry Up the Charts" would be the way to do it.
I could gush over so many songs, but my definitive favorite is the piano tinged "Let Love Speak Up Itself". It's impossible to not hum along with "Good as Gold" and "Prettiest Eyes".
The combination of intelligent lyrics, the influence of Paul Heaton's former group The Housemartins, the wonderful female vocals (Brianna Corrigan and later Jacqui Abbot) and British wit make this a terrific pop CD.
A personal favorite.

Take it for what it is........2007-03-03
While good in its' own right, you have to look at this item for what it really is... A "Greatest Hits" of sorts that was manufactured for the European and Australian markets with many of the tracks represented by outtake versions and alternate mixes. If you already have the CSN box set (the "box") there's nothing much for you here unless you are a completist. If you don't own the "box", aren't a completist, or are a "casual fan" there are better choices.
If you are a "casual fan" you'll want both "So Far" AND "The Greatest Hits" as there are no tracks with Neil Young performing with the group on "The Greatest Hits" selection and "So Far" is one of the few CDs with "Ohio" among the track list.
Most others would be satisfied with "Crosby, Stills, and Nash", "Deja Vu", "CSN" (The single CD), and this set for its' handful of rarities, unless you can't stand "alternate tracks".
If you want alternate/rare/unreleased tracks to go with your collection the "box" is a better choice.
If all you are looking for is the studio version of "Chicago/We Can Change the World" then it's this, the CSN "Box", or "The '60s: Original NBC Motion Picture Soundtrack" (which is OOP) as this song was only released as a single and currently appears nowhere else on CD.
If you are a completist, why are you still reading?
Good But Deceiving.......2007-01-21
I grew up with this band and was 16 when their first album was released in 1969. They are one of my favorites and no doubt their music (not their drug-laden personal lives) has influenced my lifelong perspectives on relationships, politics, etc. I would dearly love to have a 2 CD set of their best ORIGINAL songs that are remastered, but sadly this 2-CD set does not come close to fitting the bill because of all the alternate versions.
If I were marketing a 2-CD best of I'd have dedicated Disc 1 to their first 2 albums - 1969's CS&N and 1970's CSN&Y. If you include all but "Pre-Road Downs", "Country Girl" and "Everybody I love You", the other 17 songs from these first 2 albums would easily fit onto 1 CD with several minutes left over. Throw in "Ohio", the shorter acoustic version of "Cowgirl in the Sand" and "Find the Cost of Freedom" from the 4-Way Street album and you've got an incredible first CD.
The second CD can be devoted to the best from the other CSN albums, as well as some solo or duo efforts from the rest of their works. Musts would be "Just a Song Before I Go", "Dark Star", and "Cathedral" (from CS&N 1977), "Southern Cross", "Wasted On the Way", "Daylight Again" and "Delta" (from 1982's Daylight Again), "Got It Made" and "Soldiers of Peace" (from 1988's American Dream), and "Yours and Mine", "Haven't We Lost Enough", and "After the Dolphin" (from 1990's Live It Up). Live It Up was not a very good CD but these 3 songs are fantastic.
I'd add some of the better solo songs of each artist including Crosby's "Laughing", "Music Is Love", and "Tracks In The Dust", Still's "Change Partners", "Love the One You're With", and "Dear Mr. Fantasy", and Nash's "Chicago/Change the World", "Wild Tales", and "Immigration Man". I'd end it with the studio version of "Find the Cost of Freedom" that is on this current 2 CD set.
There you'd have an incredible 2-CD collection with NO ALTERNATE VERSIONS! Now why can't the marketers release something like this? It's a no-brainer and is what I suspect most who are intersted in this group would want. The new 1 CD greatest hits (2005) partially accomplishes this but this group is too great to have only a 1 CD compilation (I have the same gripe about Neil Young's new 1 CD greatest).
But I'm just the idiot customer that will now probably buy the remastered version of all the original albums so I can make my own 2-CD compilation. And that's just what they want me to do!!
This CD, with all the alternate versions, is interesting for those who might have all the originals, but is woefully inadequate if you only want one definitive 2-CD collection of their best. For that reason, I can't give it more than 3 stars.
((((BEWARE)))) NOT WHAT IT CLAIMS TO BE !.......2007-01-17
This isn't the excellent collection it appears to be. There are TWELVE alternate versions (demos) in this collection. That would be fine, if they had said this anywhere on the outside packaging, BUT THEY DIDN'T.
So now I'm stuck with an expensive double cd of demos songs I cannot stand because they don't sound like the versions I wanted, and because they remind me of how much I want to throw this at Graham Nash's head. Shame on you Nash!!!
Also, as another reviewer said, the sound quality is less than stellar. With music of this (potential) quality, you should not waste your money on inferior versions and inferior mastering.
A Great Compilation, But One Song Noticably Absent.......2006-08-18
I too, much like a previous reviewer, bought this for the original version of "Chicago/We Can Change the World." I have to say that I was extremely pleased and satisfied with the copious song selection, but upon further review of the track listing, I realized one glaring omission: "Deja Vu." I was honestly surprised that nobody else noted this in any of the reviews that I read, but I think it's worth noting that the very track that starts their 1974 primer compilation, "So Far," not being included in this set is a little displeasing. But no matter, for I am content to have the group's 1970 seminal release by the same name which features said track; one of their most complex and intricate arrangements, and a song that for many defined CSNY's signature harmonious stylings. Still, an otherwise great anthology by a timeless quartet. Glad to hear--and see--them still rocking in all their glory even now in 2006!
Worst purchase I've made for CSN.......2005-08-07
This 2 CD album, which is rated 4.5 stars by many people is actually one of my WORST purchases! The audio quality is poor, the selections sound like they came right off the Woodstock stage ... if you like it "rough cut" this album is for you. But for me it was a total waste of money. Can't believe the high stars for this one ... it makes one wonder about the review process ... doubt I'll trust it in the future.

A Masterpiece.......2007-06-20
Clear and crisp and played with vigor and heart. Mass call is of course Mess Call that someone spelled wrong. What worked for me is that I review four or five calls each night before bed. I hum them first and then listen to the call on the CD. The next day, I work out on the bugle until lip fatigue sets in.
Clear and simple.......2006-08-04
Single bugle calls, clear and simple-recognizable to this Navy/Marine Corps veteran. Also some army stuff if you desire that sort of thing. Quite a lot of quality stuff.

Peter, Paul and Mary weren't the first folk group to scale the music charts in the early 1960s, but they were far and away the most commercially successful. Carry It On is a four-CD (plus one DVD) box set that gathers all of their hits, along with generous helpings of rarities, B-sides, and previously unreleased songs. Although they had a magical vocal sound, a camera-ready image, and strong songwriting chops of their own, perhaps the trio's greatest strength was their ability to recognize outstanding songs from then-unknown composers. They were the first major group to cover songs by Bob Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot, Laura Nyro, John Denver, and Tom Paxton, which helped introduce the work of these songwriters to a wider audience. Carry It On is a worthy testament to the legendary group that proved you could make a career out of singing songs of social protest, ancient ballads, modern heartbreak, and even magic dragons, as long as you did so with sincerity, humor, and gorgeous three-part harmonies. --Michael John Simmons

This is an absolutely great CD. it has most of the songs that PP&M have ever sung. It will take days to listen to all of them. Share them with your kids, cry and laugh as you relive those moments in time that we all shared in trying to make the world a better place. Everyone should take the time to revisit the past and enjoy the songs that make you feel good.
Loved it!!!
Nostalgic Encouraging Album.......2007-03-05
I'm 53,live in Chiba-prefecture nearby Tokyo. PPM's music came over the radio ,when I was a elementary school boy. Then I didn't understand the lyrics. But I'd felt something resistant with them, which had all melancholic tune.Later I found them anti-war songs.Since then,I've loved them deeper.
These CDs are very good in sound. Its high-fidelity sound is remarkable. It is very importan for us to listen these CDs in the era The US-Iraq War.
IMPORTANT - how to get the hidden tracks in mp3 format.......2007-02-12
I had the same problem as many other people with the hidden tracks. None of my CD players or computers could play them.
I decided to try to go to the source of the music, and sent this problem through the feedback email address of the Peter, Paul & Mary website(www.peterpaulandmary.com), asking for a solution.
To my surprise, I got a very rapid and clear reply from the webmaster of the site, pointing out where to download the songs. Here it is:
On the main page of thePP&M site, in the box labelled "latest updates", click on "free stuff", and there they are - all 4 of them, in mp3 format!!!!!. I guess they agreed that the hidden tracks were unworkable as recorded on the cd.
ENJOY!
It's nice to see that they (and the people taking care of their website) still care about their fans, and have NOT ben "assimilated"
How about the solo albums on CD.......2006-10-07
With the Peter, Paul and Mary CD's selling between fourteen and nineteen dollars on Amazon, there is obviously a demand for their music. How about releasing the solo albums on CD?? If Warner's doesn't think there is a demand, make them two fers. Two albums on one CD. I would just love to have the "Mary" album on CD.
I've learned to read all the reviews, now, not just the top 3 or 4!.......2006-04-16
The music is fine. However, I bought this collection especially for the bonus tracks. I have most all of their CDs (and had them in Cassette Tape, and 8 track tape and vinyl format before that - time marches on). But I play my music on my computer these days, and these bonus tracks do NOT play from my computer (and I have two drives, and have been able to play pretty much anything else). I do not share music or make copies for friends, but I do copy to my hard drive and play from play lists. Call me old fashioned, but if I pay for a song, I expect to hear the song, or be warned that this might NOT be possible. The tricks the others reviewers speak of do not work for me. I've unfortunately been ripped off. Peter, Paul and Mary, welcome to Corporate America, you have been assimilated.
Sigh!

Classic .......2007-07-10
This is a classic CD by Harvest, because of the changes that transpired over their years of ministry to this point. "Carry On" is a surprise at first because it has more edgy sound than usual for this pioneer ministry; but over all it is a keeper and it carries you back to the time when Christian music was more sincere and real. Enjoy.

Fall in love all over again..........2005-12-05
A superb tribute to the ultimate rock "supergroup." Perfect background sounds for long drives or long nights spent in front of the computer screen. The orchestra perfectly captures the lush melodies of CSN&Y we all love. Highlights include a very delicate "Helplessly Hoping," a foot-tapping "Carry On," and an entrancing "Wooden Ships" (I like the tribute version of this track better than the orginal!). Buy, buy! You will be pleased.

Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ".......2006-09-12
This is the "Merry Widow" with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved this rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with the word "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note with an incressing crescendo and fortissimo louder than the chorus and holding the final high note---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!
The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, this CD is made in Holland and "there is one left" so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.

URBANE, URBAN COWBOY.......2006-06-22
Sometimes you just need some old-fashioned rock and rolling, comboy style. That is the roots too. If you, like I do, every once in a while need to hear about whiskey bars, fly-by-night hotels, pool playing hustlers, sad-eyed gals, flossies, no-name susies, broken-down cowboys, low down hotels nighttimes smells, guys saying what the hell at the last chance motel you have come to the right address. Listen on.
good stuff !.......2002-04-26
Jerry Jeff at his live best, surrounded by good players and cowboy poet Hondo Crouch. Great Texas country-rock. Get Vol 2 also, you need LA Freeway and Mr Bojangles to complete the set.
A truly great album/cd by the ultimate "Gypsy Songman.".......1999-07-15
I first heard Mr. Bojangles when it debuted in the summer of 1968. Try as I might I couldn't find out anything about this Walker fellow who had put it out. Unfortunately, the song disappeared almost as quickly as it had appeared. 3 years later the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band covered the song and took it to number #1. I still was haunted by the original version but couldn't find a copy or info about the artist. Then one day at a friends, I discovered "A Man Must Carry On." I was hooked!!! It was then I discovered that Jerry Jeff had been putting out albums all along but as a country artist. Well, I proceeded to buy everything he had done and be came a huge fan. "A Man Must Carry On" is a must for any fan of the genre. It totally captures the feel of Jerry Jeff and the Gonzo's live and in the studio. "LA Freeway", "Mr. Bojangles" never souned better. Other favorites of mine were "One Too Many Mornings", "Don't It Make You Wanna Dance", "Railroad Lady", and "My Buddy." (I include the second disc of this work in my review) I was fortunate enough to see him live twice before he "dissappeared" again in the mid to late 80's. I rediscovered Jerry Jeff again one night watching the "Tonight Show" where he promoted his live at Gruene Hall Album. I now am on his mailing list for his Tried & True label and keep pace with everything he does. I recommend Jerry Jeff to anybody who believes in honest, heartwarming music sung by a musician who's been on the road and has seen life from all sides.
Guitar man can make you want to smile.......1999-06-23
I have many of Jerry Jeff Walkers albums and CDs.This one brought me back to my Redneck Rock or Progressive Country roots right away. I enjoyed hearing Hondo Crouch read his Poem Full Moon as well. Both of these guys are Texas Legends and always will be . You just feel like smiling every time you hear it.
Great Music.......1999-04-18
This is a flashback of a previously released album. I am so pleased it was released on C.D. format. This album will bring back memories of your honky tonkin days. The Vol.2 album is a must to complete this set. FIVE STARS!
