Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-05-13

I have to confess that I've always loved the old Donovan songs and his suggestive slightly imperfect voice.
If you are like me it is the best CD you can by in the world.

5 out of 5 stars A Nice Complication of Donovan's Early Work.......2006-07-18

This is a folk type record with Donovan accompanying himself on guitar and harmonica. Though many people of the day were heralding Donovan as the British Dylan, his music is really quite different. True he does play the harmonica, but Donovan has a melodic voice that Dylan, and most anyone else for that matter, could ever equal. "Josie" is one of my all time favorite Donovan songs. I heard him sing it when I was sixteen at the Golden Bear in Huntington Beach, California and was really blown away.

Of course, "Catch the Wind" Donovan's first huge single is everybody's favorite (if it's not it should be) and as a bonus the single version is included on this disc as well as the LP version. But one should not overlook "Colours" when listening to Don's early work. It's one of my favorite songs. "The War Drags On," is an anti Vietnam war song and I wish I was alive back in the day to see how people reacted to it. "Candy Man" is simply outstanding. I've heard Bob Dylan's version on the bootleg "Great White Wonder," and believe me, Dylan may have turned out to be the Poet of a Generation, but Donovan beats him hands down when it comes to performing and interpreting traditional songs. Just something about his Scottish voice I guess.

5 out of 5 stars donovan doesn't colour by numbers .......2006-01-02

i've read in donovan's book "hurdy gurdy man" that he was one of the first singer/songwriters too mix politics with rock or folk
and suceeded jut like bob dylan did with his first 3 or 4 albums
anyway donovan is a talent that goes vasely un-noticed due to the sucession of bob dylan..who wrote excellent lyrics in his sleep.....
donovan also wrote excellent lyrics and beautiful melodies and this album shows where donovan could make abstract songs packed with a punch like "sunny goodge street" and his classic recording "universal solider" this album also features my favorites "the war drags on" "do you hear me now"

a man who had his heart right in the centre of what was going on in the world..a messiah who stands along side bob dylan as a truly great poetic genius

4 out of 5 stars We Five - Second Edition.......2007-01-22

The second We Five album had strayed to far into pop music, so this third offering was a welcome return to more of the folk/blues feel of You Were on My Mind. There was a new female lead, but she was strong enough to carry the vocals and added a harder edge to the sound.

5 out of 5 stars Great music - fun to singalong.......2007-03-10

We have the Christmas Revels CD and loved that, but I can't stand Christmas music in February, so I bought this CD. My family adores it -- my kids, 4 and 6, love to sing along to it. There are a few drinking songs that praise alcoholic beverages (Good Ale, Jone's Ale), but I'm not sure my kids get the gist and it doesn't bother me.

I felt this was well worth the cost -- there are a lot of songs on here. I love that we can sing along to music that isn't sacchrine, dumb-downed, kids music and I like the historical nature of the tunes (the liner notes are great -- they give background on the May festival and each song has a few sentences of background, as well as providing the lyrics. There are a few songs that are instrumental, but most have singing).

Another album my family is enjoying is Dean Shostack Davy Crockett's Fiddle - they are instrumental early American fiddle tunes.

5 out of 5 stars Very fresh and fun........2001-09-06

I defy you to not sing along with this album. The songs are catcy without being tiring, folksy without being simple, nostalgic without being sentimental. The Revel Singers make you feel like you're in the midst of a big party full of boisterous people having a great time. I was introduced to this album via my local eclectic radio station that played "Jones's Ale" one morning and I was hooked.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing Change from Tired Carols.......1999-12-29

Probably taken from one of the delightful annual Revels Christmas/holiday musicals, the sound is Christmas-y without being cloying. It's joyful, fresh and charming.

5 out of 5 stars American Version of Donovan's First Record and One of His Best.......2006-07-18

This is the US (on CD, the record was a bit different) version of Donovan's debut album in the UK and it was released on May It is a folk type record with Donovan accompanying himself on guitar and harmonica. "Remember the Alamo" not written by Don leaves a lot to be desired lyricwise in my opinion, but the way Donovan sings it makes you want to get up and shout. Boy could he get the most out of a song. Of course, "Catch the Wind" Donovan's first huge single is everybody's favorite (if it's not it should be), but Don's rendition of Woodie Guthrie's "Car Car" and the Traditional "Keep on Truckin'' are out standing as is his version of "Donna Donna," which I like much better than the way Joan Baez does it. And then there is "Goldwatch Blues," boy what a song, "If you've a son who wants a good career, just get him to sign on the dotted line and work for fifty years." "Here's your gold watch and shackles for your chain." Yeah isn't that they truth, sometimes, like the lad in the song says, "I just want to take a broom and sweep the bloody floor." And if you don't get what I'm saying, well I feel sorry for you.

5 out of 5 stars PSYCHEDELIC FOLK POP DELIGHT.......2003-05-16

Donovan didn't die young like Nick Drake, nor did he ever become as profound as Dylan, so he's not much mentioned in the lore of rock. (As far as comparisons go - perhaps he could be considered a more trippy Cat Stevens?) Yet here was a unique talent that created some of the most memorable psychedelic folk/pop in catchy, tuneful songs that have a timeless appeal. Songs like the flowing Catch The Wind, the evocative Colours, the yearning Josie and the reflective Universal Soldier contributed to making the late 1960s such a very special time (what with Melanie, Marianne Faithfull and others) and tapped into the same psychedelic vein as the band Love. I think in the early 90s Happy Mondays credited Donovan with a lot of inspiration, but I think his Celtic romanticism probably also subliminally inspired artists as diverse as Enya and The Waterboys, to name just two. Sure he could be really kitschy, as his song Atlantis shows I(mercifully not included here), but overall, he created a solid body of charming classic songs that have been much covered by other artists. Fans of clever psychedelic pop and of artists like Belle and Sebastian would do themselves a favour by (re)discovering Donovan.

5 out of 5 stars Loved this when it was released in the 60s.......2000-12-08

This was one of my favorite albums in the 60s! It shaped my love of all music. Donovan got pretty weird after this, but he definitely created a work of art right off the bat. First albums are like that sometimes -- a person's whole store of energy up until the point they let it out for the first time! It'll be nice to listen to it again.

I used to sing "Dona, Dona" to my son when he was a baby and he loved it.

5 out of 5 stars Donovan must be a Roscrucian or some kind of esoteric guru.......2000-07-14

This record has it all, If you liked the film Rushmore, you will like this record...No age limits...It transcends the 60's...No mortal man could have been this inspired...That is why I think he is a roscrucian, a secret hermetic order clued in on the real meaning of life, These songs will tear your heart out and put it back, healthier and stronger than ever before...I was kayaking the Yellowstone near Miles City Montana and I listened to this record, I was transported to the nether realm of my psyche, I felt like the gnosis had descended upon me and everything was gonna be all right. Donovan truly a visionary and this record an illuminator! Buy it now!
