5 out of 5 stars THE KINKS COME OF AGE AND SPEAK THEIR MIND WITH THIS LEGENDARY ALBUM........2007-04-21

I will be writing a review on the legendary masterpiece album entitled "THE KINKS - LOLA VERSUS POWERMAN AND THE MONEYGOROUND - PART ONE" by one of Rock's most all-time greatest bands ever. I give you one of England's favorite pride and joy's, T-H-E--K-I-N-K-S. This legendary album was originally released in 1970 on Vinyl/LP and 8-Track on the Reprise Records label once owned by old blue eyes himself, the late great Frank Sinatra which is a Warner Communications Company. I purchased the very first print release of this legendary album on Compact Disc in the late 80's. I also purchased the most recent release of this album in 2004 in the new ORIGINALLY RECORDING REMASTERED series on an imported Compact Disc on the Santuary UK label. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary masterpiece album or the legendary artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the overall best informative and most accurate review possible.

What do VAN HALEN, THE RAINCOATS, MOTT THE HOOPLE, THE PRETENDERS, ELVIS COSTELLO, BIG STAR, THE FALL, HERMAN'S HERMIT'S, THE JAM, KRISTY MACOLL, DAVID BOWIE AND BLUR all have in common? They've all recorded cover versions of THE KINKS songbook of the 60's which are written and composed by the band's lead singer and frontman Raymond Douglas Davies.

THE KINKS will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for not just writing and performing some of Rock's most sacred classic anthems, but for being one of the most kinkiest and humorous bands in all of Rock n' Roll history. THE KINKS are also known and renowned the world over for the Davies brothers most famous legendary fights on and off the stage. THE KINKS have been performing together on and off since 1963, at which time Ray joined his younger brother's band, THE RAVENS (Soon renamed THE KINKS). Only THE ROLLING STONES which formed in 1962, can claim a lengthier run as Rock's most active band today. When THE KINKS lead singer and frontman Ray Davies met up and joined forces with his younger brother, lead and rhythm guitarist Dave Davies, drummer Mick Avory and bassist Pete Quaife, the line-up was complete and the stage was set. THE KINKS would be born and Rock n' Roll would be turned upside down and never be the same again. THE KINKS would record some of Rock's most humorous albums ever and yet, some of Rock's most sacred anthems for many years. However, many music critics as well as the many fans truly believed that the THE KINKS golden age and best recording years were during the 1964 to 1972 years. This legendary masterpiece album is one of them. When THE KINKS headed into the recording studio and laid down the tracks for this legendary album, as time passed, THE KINKS would come out of the studio with the finished and completed acetate and hand the product into Reprise Records. Reprise Records would release this album as the legendary masterpiece album "LOLA VERSUS POWERMAN AND THE MONEYGOROUND - PART ONE" in 1970. Though THE KINKS struggled commercially and performed unevenly, even as they were writing and recording some of Rock's all-time most legendary timeless anthems, their drought on the charts would finally come to an end with the left-field success of the band's hit single "Lola" (#9, 1970). It may be the only song about an encounter with a transvestite to make the Top 10, and it became a staple of their increasingly popular live shows. In my opinion, this legendary masterpiece album is without a doubt, a true testament of four extremely talented individuals, two of them whom are brothers that not only have one of the most famous love/hate relationships in Rock history, but contain true qualities of sheer genius and musical creativity that has no boundaries or limits. This legendary album is also a fine fitting tribute to a great legendary band that was truly indeed, far ahead of their time. This album is by far, one of THE KINKS greatest accomplishments and achievements that would also contribute as part of the legendary British Invasion of the 1960's, the sound that would change Rock n' Roll forever and set the new Rock standards for the many great bands that were yet to come.

It is now time to let the Rock n' Roll music of THE KINKS to speak for itself and back it up by doing all of the talking musically. The legendary masterpiece "LOLA VERSUS POWERMAN AND THE MONEYGOROUND - PART ONE" album which is a Raymond Douglas Davies production begins with 41 second acoustic "The Introduction," the forever KINKS Rocker " The Contenders," the slow and well sung acoustic Rocker "Strangers," the humorous Rocker "Denmark Street," the slow acoustic Rocker "Get Back In Line," the forever KINKS trademark groundbreaking Rock anthem "Lola," the blistering hard Rocker "Top Of The Pops," the funny and humorous song "The Moneygoround," the fast paced acoustic Rocker "This Time Tomorrow," the slow and beautifully soothing acoustic song "A Long Way From Home," the breathtaking hard Rocker "Rats," the forever KINKS trademark Rock anthem "Apeman," the slow turned fast blasting hard Rocker "Powerman" and the incredible acoustic Rocker "Got To Be Free." May I also add that Ray Davies' powerful lead vocals were sizzlin' red hot and burning on fire while laying down the vocals during the recording of this legendary masterpiece album. Ray's brother Dave was also sizzlin' with his blistering guitar riffs and licks thus taking the music to another level. Dave Davies amazing guitar arrangements on this legendary masterpiece album are the real true stuff that is made of Rock legend.

Overall, this is one great masterpiece album worth seeking further research and information into and checking out especially if you are a hardcore diehard KINKS fan or a devout music collector. As for all of the curious newcomers and new beginners that are not quite familiar with the sound and music of THE KINKS, this album might not be a bad place to begin your KINKS collection. However, there are many greatest hits compilation albums that you might want to research further into before you decide as to which album(s) might suit or be right for you to purchase. Either way, you will have made the right choice in beginning your KINKS collection. This is one decision that you will not regret. You can do all of your researches and purchase as many of THE KINKS album(s) that you want either on Amazon com or at your local Borders Books and Music store.

I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary masterpiece album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This masterpiece album has already proven without a doubt, to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This is one great legendary album that no hardcore music fan or devout music collector would want to be without.

In closing, following the release of the legendary "LOLA VERSUS POWERMAN AND THE MONEYGOROUND - PART ONE" album in 1970, THE KINKS would soon quickly embark on a World Tour to highly critically acclaim. However, THE KINKS would have their fair shares of ups and downs and highs and lows throughout their long career. Despite all of the bad tribulations, THE KINKS must just have a strong will to survive and persevere, thus inspiring them to keep recording and releasing albums. THE KINKS received the highest ultimate honor by being inducted as members of the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. With this in mind, I guess it is safe to say that THE KINKS have forever left their mark in Rock n' Roll history and will never be forgotten. So here's to you Ray, Dave, Mick and Pete. Thanks for the great memories and I hope that there will be many more to come in the future. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have truly enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. GOD SAVE THE KINKS! Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Sound and Lovingly Packaged.......2007-04-16

If you are viewing this item right now you probably already know about the significance of this album. I have owned the old domestic Reprise edition for years now and just recently picked up this pressing. The sound quality is superior and the booklet is handsome and much more informative. You will not regret buying this import in lieu of the older, more common Reprise pressing.

Amazon.com essential recording

The Kinks' 1970 effort was the penultimate creation in a five-year, six-album burst that ranks just a notch below the great sustained rock & roll eruptions of Bob Dylan, the Beatles, the Stones, and Elvis Costello. Of course, the linchpin to this collection is "Lola," Ray Davies's irresistibly vivid account of the charms of a seductive transvestite. Its daring (for the time) subject matter aside, "Lola" stands as one of the great singles of all time. Add to the list the almost as infectious "Apeman," a slew of funny, shrewd alienated-rock-star screeds ("Top of the Tops," "The Moneyground," "Powerman"), and a couple of memorable contributions from brother Dave ("Strangers," "Rats"), and you have the Kinks at their raucous, righteous, quirky quintessence. This import version includes a mono mix of "Lola" and demo takes of "Apeman" and "Powerman." --Steven Stolder

4 out of 5 stars "I don't feel safe in this world no more/I don't want to die in a nuclear war".......2006-04-10

"Lola versus Powerman and the Moneygoround Part One" (gotta love that title), the Kinks' last release on Pye, doesn't quite reach the level of their best work but it's pretty great just the same. Stylistically, "Lola" goes in a harder-rocking direction than the preceding "Arthur" but also shows signs of the rootsy, country-influenced music the band would dive into completely on their next release "Muswell Hillbillies."

The short opening medley "Intro/The Contenders" gets things off to a rocking start and forms a bookend with the concluding "Got to Be Free." "Strangers" is one of Dave Davies' greatest achievements, a gorgeous ballad with strange, quasi-mystical lyrics that could only have come from his mind. "Get Back in the Line" and "A Long Way from Home" are great melancholy ballads from Ray's pen, while "Powerman" rocks out with a cool circular riff. The sarcastic, hilariously catchy "Apeman" is one of the band's all-time best singles. And of course there's the album's calling card, the wonderfully weird cross-dressing anthem "Lola," which remains probably the band's second most well-known song after "You Really Got Me."

The record's only real stumbles ("The Moneygoround," "Top of the Pops," and to some extent "Denmark Street") occur when Ray strays too far into the theatrical hamminess that would mar several of the Kinks' later records.

5 out of 5 stars Ray and Dave Davies get MAD!!.......2005-02-24

I own every single studio album that The Kinks ever made, and I would have to say that this album is my absolute favorite ("Think Visual" follows a close second).

So...what's so darn good about this album? Practically everything! You want some nice pretty melodic ballads? Check out "Get Back In Line" and "A Long Way From Home". You want some out and out raucous heavy metal tunes? Listen to "Rats" and "Powerman". You want a nice, fun calypso tune? Listen to "Apeman", one of the funniest songs Ray Davies ever wrote. The country and bluegrass like guitar playing on "The Contenders" and "Got To Be Free" pointed the way toward their next album Muswell Hillbillies. And if acoustic folk is your cup of tea, then there's "This Time Tomorrow".

LOLA may be Ray Davies and The Kinks at their most angry. Throughout the album, Ray rants and raves about the music business and how bad he's been ripped off by his publishers. For "The Moneygoround", another hilarious song, Ray actually mentions the names of people who have ripped him off. If he REALLY wanted to be nasty, he would have given out their addresses and phone numbers as well! Even Dave gets in on the act, with the aforementioned "Rats". Speaking of Dave, this song and the wonderful ballad "Strangers" may be the two best songs he has ever written..at least in my not so humble opinion.

Elsewhere, Ray speaks of how "people want you when your record's hot, but when it drops down they just pass you by" in the crunch rocker "Top Of The Pops", which is another favorite tune of mine from this album. There are some very catchy and way cool guitar riffs on this song. And..I can't talk about this album without mentioning our dear friend "Lola", which became The Kinks' biggest hit in the U.S. in many a year. What more can be said about this enjoyable tune that hasn't been said before, except that it is a fun, upbeat song about a transvestite that you just can't get out of your noggin! The only tune on the album that I can live without is "Denmark Street". Both lyrically and musically, I find this a rather unappealing tune.

But golly...only one bad song on the whole album? That's mighty good for this band! This is a great album and it has not dated one bit. A must have for Kinks' fans...at least for this one!

5 out of 5 stars It's worth the extra money.......2004-12-05

I was listening to this one in on the way home last night. The best way to listen to an album is to be "trapped" in a car with a good stereo. The bazooka tube on FEEL. This remastered version is worth the extra money. And, it's a great album. "Denmark Street" is my favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best.......2004-07-08

I admit I am a huge Kinks fan - I have heard all their music and own most of it. I own Ray's "movie" Return to Waterloo and Percy, the film the Kinks perform Ray's soundtrack for. I have seen them perform several times and read their books. I am biased, so I will not compare this album to any other band and will simply say it is the best Kinks CD of all. If you want to hear the Kinks at their best - this is it!

5 out of 5 stars The best.......2004-05-21

Side A is the best side to any Kinks album, and taken together the two sides rank it among the best rock and roll albums ever. "Lola" is perfect -- the riff, the chorus, but also the teasing ambiguity of the lyric, its double entendres capturing the essence of the subject matter. But then "Lola" is followed by "Top of the Pops", without doubt the funniest great three-chord rocker ever, and it's surrounded by a lot of other superb songs in a wide variety of styles, from Dave's obligatory hard rockers, to calypso ("Apeman"), to English music hall ("Denmark Street" and "Money-Go-Round"), and even the country-folk sound later explored in "Muswell Hillbillies" ("Intro" and "Got to be Free"). The pacing of the track selection, especially on side A, is particularly satisfying.

There's a hint of a storyline (poor young man comes to big city and, after struggling as a day laborer, finds unexpected success as rock singer, only to find it doesn't solve life's problems), which is clearer than the story behind "Arthur" but not nearly as intrusive as that of "Preservation" or even "Schoolboys in Disgrace". And it's very, very funny -- how many rock and roll albums can you say that about?
