Summer Day Reflection Songs to Reflect on Any Day of the Year.......2006-07-18
When this was released, I think in 2000, I sort of went over the moon. Here they were at last, everything that had been released in America on the Hickory label. All the pre Mickey Most, pre psychedelic stuff. Well there's those songs that came out on "Troubadour" and the stuff on "Sixty Four" the album of pre "What's Bin Did and What's Bin Hid" record that's only available on Donovan's website. Still, this is one fine set. You can skip all the other (and there's a zillion of 'em) compilation records of Donovan's early stuff and just get this.
I'll say, it has never ceased to amaze me how they keep coming up with ways to repackage Donovan's stuff. I'll bet you could buy a couple dozen Albums and you'd still just have the songs that are included here. And the quality here is better than you're going to find on the other CDs. They really took care when they mastered this. In short, This is a must own set for any Donovan fan. Actually it's a must own set for anybody who wants to understand the Sixties. I play this all the time, however I must admit that I have many, many of those other compilations. I'm just a Donovan junkie, would have been a groupie had I been born a couple decades earlier. Ah well, I just can't help it.
Donovan's Catch The Wind/Colours period in full.......2005-11-03
Dovetailing quite neatly with the Pye/Epic material recently repackaged by EMI, this double-CD collects everything released by Donovan prior to Sunshine Superman. In the UK these were on Pye and in America on Hickory.
The first CD contains Donovan's first LP, What's Bin Hid And What's Been Did (tracks 3-14), comprising six of his own songs and five covers. Although compared by the press at the time to Bob Dylan, it is clear that the comparison is no more valid than for dozens of other folkies of the time, and that lyrically Donovan had a far more romantic, sensuous and less political outlook, though both share common roots, such as Woody Guthrie (Car Car), Blind Willie Johnson (You're Gonna Need Somebody On Your Bond) and Mississippi John Hurt (Candy Man).
Donna Donna had been recorded by Joan Baez but is a Yiddish song originally called Dana Dana Dana (written by Aaron Zeitlin for a play called Esterke). Remember The Alamo dates back to Tex Ritter in 1955, but was probably learned from a later version, and Goldwatch Blues was written by a contemporary on the circuit, Mick Softley. Donovan's own songs include Catch The Wind, a perfect song, and To Sing For You, which he famously sang for Bob Dylan in the film Don't Look Back. The bonus tracks on CD1 are the single versions of Catch The Wind and Colours; the B-side of Catch The Wind; and a rare track that originally surfaced only on a French EP.
The second disc features the album Fairy Tale (tracks 5-16), was released only five months after the first and shows the speed with which musicians could develop in the mid-sixties. Donovan's eight originals include the magnificent Sunny Goodge Street and other great songs such as To Try For The Sun and the Ballad Of Geraldine (sung in the first person). Shawn Phillips, who was to add sitar and collaborate on many of Donovan's later recordings, plays guitar on some of the tracks, and contributes his song The Little Tin Soldier. Donovan pays homage to fellow Glaswegian Bert Jansch with Oh Deed I Do, the other cover being Paul Bernath's distinctive Circus Of Sour. The disc opens with Donovan's anti-war EP The Universal Soldier. The Buffy Sainte-Marie title track was a top twenty hit in its own right in the UK and the EP included a shorter version of The Ballad Of A Crystal Man as well as more Bert Jansch and Mick Softley songs. Disc 2 is rounded off with a single recorded after the album, Turquoise, with its strangely titled flip Hey Gyp (Dig The Slowness). This seems to be an update of Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe's Can I Do It For You?, given a bit of an acoustic Bo Diddley beat, and it closes the disc in fine style.
Although some of Fairy Tale has appeared in true stereo on previous compilations, both discs are presented in mono.

Pure and sweet.......2003-07-19
This compilation is amazing. It is a bunch of his early stuff before he got to be the ultimate flower child (I like that Donovan too) when he was still just ripping off Dylan. It even has the song that he plays for Dylan in "Don't look back" called To Sing For You. If you like early Dylan and you don't mind that Donovan borrowed his style, you'll be into this. The whole thing is filled with beautiful guitar playing and melodies. If you don't have his ealry albums already then I highly recommend it since it is sort of a "Best Of" of his first four or five albums.

Back to the '60s.......2006-01-06
My wife got me this album for a birthday and it's one of the best music compilations by a single artist from the '60s. The guitar playing is terrific and the songs reflect the Vietnam War era and the hope for a better world.
There is a lot to this collection -- Catch the Wind, Colours, Universal Soldier, To Try for the Sun, The Ballad of a Crystal Man, Do You Hear Me Now, etc. This is an album that won't gather dust.

one of the most underrated albums ever.......2001-12-03
It's PERFECT! There's no other word for it... okay, maybe mind-blowing, wonderful, stunning would also do...
If you are looking for THE Donovan album to get, this is it. It doesn't include the any of the major Donovan hits other than 'Catch The Wind' and 'Colours', but the melodies are simple, touching, BEAUTIFUL. This is one of the best albums I own, and while some people have complained of it being too slow and boring, I still think this masterpiece is one of the best albums ever.
And, this is the album that will put an end to any comparisons to Dylan deeply planted in your head. Donovan is a personality on his own.
Donovan's complete Pye/Hickory recordings.......2000-04-05
All of his 1965 material gathered together on one set for the first time, so for the fan this is a must. Casual collectors would be better served by a one-stop career best of such as the wonderful LOVE IS HOT, TRUTH IS MOLTEN, or the remastered GREATEST HITS.
